Joe Lieberman has long suffered from a complete inability to comprehend what is happening to him on the blogs — one person I spoke with said that his friend’s teenage son had been asked by the campaign to start a one, as if that was going to solve the problem. The Connecticut press, however, seems to be trying to come to terms with this new factor in local politics.
I find myself wondering if the Lieberman inner circle and Joe himself went from underestimating the blogs to over-reacting to them. They began the race imagining that their internet detractors were marginalized rabble. They may still think that, but the strength of sentiment on the internet has, I think, gotten inside their heads. What they may not understand is that strong language and explosive overstatement are part of the quintessence of the blog medium. In a very McLuhanesque way, bloggers often find themselves slipping into stridency and vulgarity when they had no intention of doing so because the medium shapes its messengers.
I think the Lieberman retinue has been collectively freaked out by the way their internet opponents express displeasure. I think that has kicked them all into a very paranoid mode. Paranoid people make bad decisions. I think this has started to look, to them, less like an election and more like some kind of nightmare or fairy tale in which they are pursued through the woods by thugs and rabid dogs. They’ve almost forgotten that they’re running against Ned Lamont. They’ve identified, as their true opponent, a mob of crazy bloggers who will say anything and stop at nothing. The rest of the world, however, can’t see the bloggers, so a lot of Lieberman’s desperate flailings don’t seem to make much sense.
Marion Steinfels, Lieberman’s communications director, said that on Tuesday she watched a YouTube video about Lamont and tax cuts forwarded to her by e-mail. But when asked what she knows about Nedheads, Steinfels said she has seen the term before but knows little about the group.

Spoke today to a friend who is a Connecticut resident who is a very religious Jew. He found Joe’s expectation that Jews owe him their vote very offensive. And he’s not a member of the blogosphere.
Brilliant. And so nails it!
another darkblack graphic, I believe. with Monk back in biz that’s a serious one-two punch. then there’s this:

Jane – spot on as usual. Joe just doesn’t get that the blogs just represent one of the more vocal and merciless eyes that are trained on him. There are plenty of CT voters who don’t even know what a blog is who are voicing the same questions, and they are not doing it politely either.
My gut tells me Joe is secretly meeting with key republicans and is strongly considering jumping ship. Of course it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to consider that hypothesis.

Hey Jane
I have loved the work you, Christy and everyone else here does.
I am going on a long vacation/ride on my bike, culminating in a visit to my brother Aaron in Oregon.(and crater lake hopefully too)
But I wanted to suggest this short ditty for a future Joe Vidi.
“We are gathered here today

to honor
a man they call
Sathington Willoughby.
There’s a joke or two,
A pun or three
I feel that must be told

ot – say… do they call those adopted embryo babies, “snowflakes” because all the kids are white?
I’m sure they would never admit to it. I assume they would say that it’s because every baby is as unique and beautiful and fragile as a snowflake, or something like that. White is just an added bonus.

Does this make Joe “Little Red Riding Hood”?
Does this make Joe “Little Red Riding Hood”?
I think you mean “Little Red Short Riding Hood”.
the “stridency and vulgarity” thing pissed me off too. I suspect in a lot of ‘respectable’ reporters’ minds, vulgarity=stridency. Like they don’t curse when they’re talking to each other? We’ve all seen the transcripts of the professional talks given by Pearlclutchin’ Debbie Howell, right? Fuck that shit…oops, how strident of me.
I wonder – has Joe forgotten he’s running against Lamont, or has he just never realized he was in the first place? What I mean is, has he ever recognized Ned as a legitimate primary opponent?
It seems to me he first saw Ned as a mere annoyance (will no one rid me of this troublesome upstart?), and now sees him as a synecdoche for the rabid lambs of leftist blogistan, a materialization of or mouthpiece for all its “irrational hatred” for Joe.
But in the sense of realizing that Ned is a serious opponent, whose entrance into the race is predicated on serious political issues, and serious dissatisfaction with Lieberman’s performance – I think Joe still doesn’t understand that, which is why he has a primary opponent in the first place. For Holy Joe, iwo, such obtuseness is a feature, not a bug.

That ain’t just a dye job!
Speaking of stridency, Ann Coulter and Michelle Malkin get how much exposure on “fair and balanced” FAUX and other Rupert Murdoch outlets?
P.S. I can’t help but pimp this concern troll cartoon some more.
I wonder sometimes if the remora affixed to Lieberman’s campaign are as deluded as he is?
Do they truly believe that Lieberman’s duplicity, sanctimony and smug narcissism are not abundantly obvious to anyone who examines the Senator’s record?
It must gall Lieberman to not only be challenged, but to be held in contempt. I think he feels genuinely maligned and misunderstood. He is the Voice of Reason, a statesman who reaches across the aisle to seek common ground, a courtly man of the Senate whose values ought to be an example to all of sobriety and deliberation. Undoubtedly, this is the tale his sycophants echo to him.
His bathos would almost be pitiable except that is a menace to Democrats and an enabler of sundry disastrous GOP policies.
He, like Bush, will never concede his own errors and fatal hubris. He will go to his grave believing his own myth.
Leslie,
You’ve got mail
Prairie Sunshine,
I’ve been thinking about that, vis a vis the recent sexual harrassment of a chief of state (creepy!yuckkkk!)
Has the dipwad always been that way (frat boys don’t change their spots), and his inner circle has kept it out of the public?
OR
Since he’s gotten away with pissing on truth, justice, and the American Way (not to mention us,the Middle East and the Constitution), he figures he can do any freakin’ thing he pleases and WHATCHAGONNA DO ABOUT IT?
OR
He’s getting more Scroogian visits than A Christmas Carol revival, and he’s loosin’ it. I can see Laura wandering the Banquo halls (apologies, punaise!) – “out, damned spot!”
Take your pick.
joe needs to realize that the only reason bloggers don’t like him is that he is a judas sheep, he makes believe he is a democrat and then he undermines the domcorats
he needs to go to the republican party and stop consuming our resources
we need to throw him out, “un domcorat” him, i he wins the primary we need to censure his statements and distance him from us, we need to force his hand and make him go to his people, the republicans
Bonesman Milbank was hired by MSNBC to do political commentary, so he’s their go-to guy now. I wonder if that bought him some Kevlar underwear for the next time he misbehaves and has to face Debra Howl and C.L. Brady.
That’s some valid insight from Colin and Jane.
But I’d not like to see the impact of blogs underestimated, either. Establishment pols and media still don’t realize that that for every blogger, there’s a growing community of, I dare say, regular people.
Diogenes #30:
Those aren’t mutually exclusive choices, although #3 might put a bit of a damper on the other two.
Those lovely “Kiss Buttons” still Drive Lieberman crazy,LMAO.
Even Liebermans Staffers can’t resist,They all have at least one.
1. I still wonder if the entire “net movement” is similar to the Goldwater movement (but of course in opposite political spectrum) of the early 60’s, as described by that guy that wrote that book that was reviewed on fdl awhile back. I think the Goldwater movement set up a long period of conservative victories. Hopefully the same is brewing for progressive Democrats.
2. If I were Lamont, I’d hire those guys with the “Kiss float”, and pay them just to cruise the whole damn state, 7 days a week, non-stop. Funniest, and most provocative “ad” I’ve seen in quite awhile.
3. I STILL encourage Mr. Lamont to get on down to those factory gates, union halls, freight docks. I believe there’s votes there to be won. But he has to go see those men. Go over to EB, tell the men that the US Submarine force will be with us for a long time, and he, Lamont, fully understands the strategic importance of maintaining a sub force. There’s votes to be won among those working men.

Of course, you’re right – it could be a BOGO or the trifecta!
You call that a team? A communications director who doesn’t understand blogs or vlogs or videos or YouTube or what the media has become? No wonder the simp is going to lose. When you can’t bother to do the work of understanding your opponent, can’t embark on the research to not only understand but effectively use all forms of communication, don’t know how to have the conversation with the people you are supposed to represent and serve – you are a loser and you’re wasting your time and your money and everybody knows it.
diogenes at 30, I vote for the first option. All the biographical evidence seems to suggest that GWB has a severe case of arrested development. Someone posted on an earlier thread that even after he was sober, his mother seated him as far as possible away from QEII at a dinner because his behavior was so bad.
Why, I slip into stridency and vulgarity the way others might slip into cool silk sheets
;>)
And why not? When our pal Ann can get away with making a threat that would get her jacked express-style if it was made in an airport waiting line…The delicate, easily wrinkled sensibilities of those who would wink away such ‘petty foibles’ (until they appeared to suffer from St.Vitus’ Dance) as long as their team commits them, are for me to poop on.

meta 39: nail on the head!
this spring in indianapolis in the Democratic primary there was a rich, self-financed challenger to the Congresslady. In public, all seemed civil but the local bloggers rallied behind the imcumbent and did a lot of research. The challenger was skunked with 11% of the vote after spending $200,000 – blogs had spread the political info ‘quietly’. At one point, a local blog was seriously threatened with a lawsuit by the challenger.
I think part of the problem for Lieberman, and the Corporate Owned Press, and for that matter the rabid winguts themselves…is the same thing that happens to civilizations more generally. Namely, they have all become victim of assuming that anyone who disagrees with them is the “Enemy”, and that the Enemy has differing views from them, but is essentially aligned the same way. And the alignment of BushCo is Neocons at the top, the grossly underqualified theocrat-approved idiots do the daily work, while the Hitler Youth are the cheerleaders who enforce discipline in the ranks.
In short, the Theocrat-approved idiots project rabid unthinking anger onto our side’s “rank and file”…only our rank and file are not rabid eliminationists at all, we’re more intellectual, better educated, and an older demographic (though admittedly we are indeed pissed at the “enrich the rich and destroy the rest” policy of this administration).
Lieberman thinks he is fighting an enemy that mirrors the structure of the Wurlitzer, when we are a completely different animal. He just doesn’t get it. And this is why we will win.
[OT: from EPU territory below. I’m reposting this here because it’s an insight into how the Right is trying to distance itself from the American citizens in Lebanon that it’s just getting around to rescuing.]

Pat Buchanan on Scarbrow, says Israel has gone too far. Launched a blitzkreig against an innocent nation and people. Disproportionate.
I hope the “communications director” is working for free, ’cause that’s just pathetic.
Worse, it’s clear that he had no one on his team who even bothered to feel out where CT voters were on the issues. He just figured he would win in a walk, and wouldn’t even have to break a sweat. For that reason alone I would send his ass packing – talk about taking the voters for granted…
I’m glad Joe thinks the rabid lambs are after him. I hope the sheep he has to count to get to sleep are all foaming at the mouth.
Anne at 52 – I’m sure Joe is fervently wishing for the silence of the lambs.
scarecrow,

Which shelter is it, I see 2 for New Braunfels, the Humane Society and the City. Seems like only one phone number for both.
There might be people out here that could make donations to help get them back on their feet after the vandalism. What a sorry world.
Some familiar names in that Courant article–Connecticut Bob, Scarce, etc.
Political analysts are Ga are disecting the Reed lost and realizes that the Religious Right stayed home. That’s not a strong endorsement of Bush or his base because they don’t believe it was just jack. Joe’s people might just stay home to.. Although there was cross over vote like moi, moderates went for Cagle and Reed’s base stayed home. The latest polling was close but the results weren’t. McKenney’s different because it’s a strong democratic area but there is a feeling they deserve better.
Y’all, I’m gonna jump off early tonight, but if Hope shows up later, would you please let her know that CA DFLer was looking for her (EPU’d on the last thread)?
Okay, you pups ‘n’ lambs sleep well — a demain.
My thought on corporate media bias and lying about lefty blog stridency and leftyness is to let them do what they want to do, only make sure the URLs get spread around when they do it. The lefty blogs aren’t very lefty with regard to mainstream popular opinion, except maybe on gay marriage. And aren’t very strident compared to reactionary blogs… and as for anger, man, what I see on my occasional visits to reactionary side is truly frightening. I think a lot of people would tune in regularly to non-reactionary blogs if they could be prompted to click on in once. The blogosphere needs a mole to become a blogosphere expert on national TV, get people interested and give out the URLs.
Second and final blogwhore… er, announcement, on blogoshpere day -or any day, for that matter: I got a blog up with summaries of election and voting analyses that have half a chance of being reliable (versus Democratic consultant BS) and also website with all links I could find to grassroots election work info. Anne,
Although “the Blogs” can take some credit this was an “inside Job”.
I’m a member of my towns Democratic town committee(DTC) and Lieberman ignored all 162 DTCs and even told a large group of Town chairs to screw off last year when they expressed concerns over his Iraq War stance, apearences on Fox News and other issues.
Lieberman told this rather large group of town chairs in a meeting they asked for
(paraphrased)
I have approval ratings in the high 60s to low 70s among both Rs and Ds and can raise 10 million bucks. If you don’t like what I’m doing Tough Shit.
Needless to say,These DTC chairs each has a dagger in their hands now and can’t wait to be the one to look Lieberman in the eye and say
CHEW HARDER YOU LITTLE PRICK
as they plunge that dagger into his political heart.
I pledge to:

Hmmm… interesting, that’s a new one for me. Worth thinking on, IMHO.

Thats been the high mark for Liebermans campaign to date.My inbox as Admin of http://dumpjoe.com/ has more Emails from people Lieberman thinks are loyal to him than Sean Smiths does.LOL
What they may not understand is that strong language and explosive overstatement are part of the quintessence of the blog medium
———————————–
And the “..strong language and explosive overstatement..” are manifestations of the outrage at witnessing democracy morphing into fascism before our very eyes, while we have no ability to halt the decay.
ctkeith >”…These DTC chairs each has a dagger in their hands now…”
May I sharpen up your dagger Sir ?
“There is nothing more difficult to take in hand, more perilous to conduct, or more uncertain in its success, than to take the lead in the introduction of a new order of things.” – Niccolo Machiavelli
And the “..strong language and explosive overstatement..” are manifestations of the outrage at witnessing democracy morphing into fascism before our very eyes, while we have no ability to halt the decay.
Some must manufacture outrage, others have outrage thrust upon them.
ctkeith – based on what you and Jane and others have posted, and from what I’ve read, the saddest part of all of this is that Joe really has to think this is blog-driven, that this is some evil outside force mucking with the good people of CT who have loved him for years, because he can’t face the truth – which is that the people of CT are sick and tired of being ignored and having their concerns dismissed, and whatever love there was for him was lost a long time ago.
I guess what I was trying to say was that whatever Joe wants or needs to think about in order to avoid the truth is just fine with me – as long as he thinks this is some blog-driven nightmare, he will fail to connect with the people who actually have the power to determine his fate: the voters.
thanks for all you are doing in the effort – we’re all grateful (and envious, too!).
I guess what I was trying to say was that whatever Joe wants or needs to think about in order to avoid the truth is just fine with me – as long as he thinks this is some blog-driven nightmare, he will fail to connect with the people who actually have the power to determine his fate: the voters.
I will be very happy if the Democratic establishment starts to see progressive bloggers as a force to be reckoned with.
outrage at witnessing democracy morphing into fascism before our very eyes, while we have no ability to halt the decay.
this is a winning issue for the democrats
we HAVE to point out that this administration is trying to institutionalize facism
it’s a dirty word to their base and we can DEFINATELY attach it to the decisions of this administration AND the repuke lican party
EPU’d from last thread:
Thanks Busted and Lotus.
The New Braunfels story is too awful.
I have lots of dog equipment (a storeful, in fact) just 50 more miles up the road in Austin.
I’ll see if she’s around later.
Little dog,
Do you know which shelter it is? I see both the Humane Society and the City there, although there is only a single contact #.
Thx
The New Republic folks show their sympathy [lack thereof] for folks trying to get out of Lebanon. Blame the victims.
that’s Martin Peretz
http://www.tnr.com/blog/theplank
Eli – I think what Joe is experiencing may become a self-fulfilling prophecy. When he loses, he will lay the blame on the blogs. Even if the blogs are not directly responsible, they will benefit by the association with Joe’s defeat.
I happen to think there’s an enormous amount of power in this medium, and we haven’t even really gotten close to the limits of it. When you can raise thousands and thousands of dollars in hours, there is power. When you have activism via an ActBlue, that directs that money where it is best spent, there is power. Connecting to and witnessing the power of one’s donations is exhilarating.
I think it’s beyond wonderful.
The blogs are basically an equivalent of a town hall meeting. They choose to demean and ignore blogs because at this point in time they can. But if they think this is guerilla theater, just wait.
I agree, me to me, facism is where we are and we need to hammer it home. John Dean (love him– omg!) is wrong and too kind when he says it is proto facism. It is here and now.
When a small group of us did a few hours of phone Dem lists in Conn last weekend, it was interesting to hear all the spontaneous enthusiasm for Lamont from those who knew about the Lamont/Lieberman primary and were dead set against Lieberman. Of the people I talked to, none of them knew what a “blog” is. And neither did those few who expressed pro-Joe views. Lots of folks said then knew the primary was coming but hadn’t studied the issues well enough to decide — and no one mentioned blogs.
Jane luvs her “Atrios in the LA Times braggin’”
Go grrl!
I would be wary of using accusations of fascism as an actual campaign strategy. Point out all the fascistic things the Republicans are doing, absolutely, but with the corporate-owned media we have, any Dem who actually accused the Republicans of fascism would immediately be marginalized as a hysterical looney.
scarecrow @ 6:52 pm (#82) – Hezbollah-sympathizin’ crybabies! (see my previous comment if you wonder what that means).
The cover campaign for this failure is already well under way, it would appear.
Scarecrow, that is appalling.
“The trumpet of freedom has been sounded, and that trumpet never calls defeat.”
Until it’s convenient to call defeat and blame the victims.
Anne,
You hit the Nail right on the Head!!
For 2 yrs I attended every Democratic Party event I could in this state and Gave away “Kiss Buttons” at these events. NOT ONCE was I scolded or even told what I was doing was wrong. Every Democratic constitutional officer and most Legislators have a Kiss Button in their desk or pocket and give me a wink and a Thumbs up at every chance they get.
“Watch what people do not what they say” is the most appropriate saying in CT. these days.
Liebermans People called a special meeting this past Saturday and half the people in the room were on the phone within about 10 mintes after it ended making sure Lamonts people had every Detail.
I’m with Eli on this – you don’t need to label it fascism in order to have people understand that the things that are going on are antithetical to democracy. What with the prevalence of the term “Islamo-fascist” it would be a matter of seconds for some right-winger – or Karl Rove – to draw a line from one term to the other and we’d be accused of equating the GOP with terrorists. They’d figure out some cutesy phrase to slap on us that would be short, sweet and deadly.
Just my 2 cents.
Egregious 83
This if from the New Braunfels Humane Society website:
http://www.humanesocietynewbraunfels.com/
I repeat: if the USA was fascist, this and other left blogs would not exist and most of us commenters here would be incarcerated or dead. A key component of fascism is open terrorist, repressive control of public opinion and political opposition. Death squads would long ago have taken out Ned and Feingold…
Anne @83, my excitement with the power of online activism will remain tempered until we start racking up some victories. Until we do that, the Schumers and Emanuels will continue giving us the back of their hands.
Call it a monarchy.

ifthethunder- Yes. I like the part where Bush says the Iranians can take a lesson from Iraq. We’ll, I guess Putin gave the answer to that. Not too impressed with the Iraq version of democracy.
Some of you may recall the Nixon “kitchen” debate with the Soviet Union’s Nikita K in Moscow, in which the right protrayed Nixon as having stood face to face with K and bettered the Russian in a direct debate. It became a big campaign point in 1960 — Nixon could stand up to those mean ruskis. Can’t wait for Rove’s spin of “just wait.”
Yo Congress!!

Ya know . . .
The story of the Humane Society replacing 5000 pounds of food, plus supplies and equipment since the word got out Monday is another, if non-political measure of just how powerfuol the internets are.
Several years ago, when the web was much younger, there was one of those “collector” situations where 80 labs were rescued from a woman’s property in Houston.
Mr. LittleDog took our truck (which is fitted out with AC, crates and all that) down twice and brought dozens of sick dogs back to Heart of Texas Lab Rescue here in Austin. I’m afraid all the dogs had projectile diahrea on the trip, but Mr. LD is a trooper.
We offered our website for fundraising, and in just 4 days we stopped the campaign at $32,000 as we didn’t need more than that.
A lot of the donations came from our customers who were shopping on our website anyway, but most of it spread by word-of-mouth – - or more precisely by email lists like Golden@Hobbes, Work_Gold, ALove4Goldens and other breed lists.
We were stunned by the power of the Nets, even then, when not everybody had a computer and long before blogs.
What an amazingly powerful tool we have in the Internets.
Thanks, Al!
i’m sorry to say this country is definitely becoming ‘authoritarian’ — democracy still flourishes but is limping along …
So will American Republican Totalitarianism work? I agree, the rethugs have pre-emted fascism wrt Islam– it would be ludicrous in the extreme for the vast majority of Muslims and religious people all over the world to “use it”, too! Check it out:
A centralized government that does not tolerate parties of differing opinion and that exercises dictatorial control over many aspects of life.
http://www.nmlites.org/standards/soci…..ssary.html
I think “radical Bush regime” is more effective. Has the benefit of being true, while also avoiding the seeming hysteria of the term fascist.
And I agree with John Dean, we’re only at a proto-fascist point. And if they push it much further, there will be open rioting in the streets, and either Civil War II or American Revolution II, instead of World War III. There’s only so much fascism they can promote with 20 percent approval ratings. They need the hausfrau to make it work.
My daughter (the married/moving one) has a theory about people with way more pets than they can care for. She thinks it’s related to OCD, trying to do things a certain way and life just spirals out of control. Can also be senility of course.
If the authorities who remove these animals don’t understand the illness, there are likely to be future incidents. She feels such people will do best with limits, like 2 spayed animals, rather than have all pets be forbidden, which would be ignored.
Little Dog, what a great story.
Gives me hope.
Until there is a Democratic majority in both houses of Congress, there will be no investigating that has any teeth in it. And even when the Dems take back that majority, do not be surprised if investigations take somewhat of a back seat to the other 47 things that are on the front burner on a stove that apparently has nothing but front burners.
Investigations are sorely needed. So is getting the democracy back on track. But even with a Democratic majority, you will still have a GOP president, so not only will we need a majority, we will need a filibuster-proof one, to boot. Don’t think all this baloney the GOP has been giving us about how terrible filibusters are will continue once the GOP sees it as a way to keep the Dems in line.
Getting back a majority will be a big step, but it won’t be the cure for what ails this country – not right away. Whatever victories we achieve in ‘06 will have to be nurtured, and the momentum toward 2008 will not be able to let up for a nanosecond.
At the moment, the only way Congress will hold anyone accountable is if the GOP itself initiates the action.
Woah, Jane, you are snarkier than punaise!
Noting that, “Fascism is a worldwide disease,” Wallace further suggest that fascism’s “greatest threat to the United States will come after the war” and will manifest “within the United States itself.”
Who was it who said that it would, however, be called “anti-fascism”? Was it Huey Long?
Anne @117:
On the positive side, if we can get a Dem into the White House in ‘08, the president should be able to do pretty much anything by then.
Wonderful post, as usual, Jane. It has been fascinating to watch the Lamont-Lieberman contest unfold. When I was in college studying traditional media, no one could have predicted the ways in which newly-emerging media would impact politics and journalism. It isn’t surprising that 20th Century types like HoJo and the MSM can’t acclimate themselves to this new media model.
That picture is great, BTW. I’m saving it to show to my sister, who is in the hospital now. She’ll love it. When she was very ill, the nurse asked her some standard questions — where are you? etc. — for assessment. When she asked my sister “Who is the president?” sis replied, “That asshole!” The nurse then asked, “What does his mother call him?” To which sis answered, “She probably calls him an asshole too, the old bitch.” That’s only one of a thousand reasons I love my sis.
credit I forgot
I quoted thom harman, one of the most passionate constitutional schlars I have ever read, I love him
Kurt 113
I wasn’t paying close attention, but I think I heard KO tonight use “radical” as an adjective to describe this administration.
When I get home, I’ll check the TiVo, but did anybody else hear that?
sorry, that’s thom hartman…can’t let a type when giving credit

I think there is definitely an identified syndrome. I used the term “collector” because that’s what it’s called, I think.
It’s gotta be some kind of perfectionism and/or OCD, and it so often gets out of control.
Sometimes you’ll see a person in a legitimate rescue groups that starts getting all controlling, and the next think you know they’ve veered off on their own and things go downhill from there.
Not always, but it’s something we look out for.
so Hillary will be a Deva ?
Okay, Eli – now you’re scaring me…
But imagine how frightened the GOP will be when it realizes how much power they have allowed to be placed in the executive branch, never awakening to the fact that it might end up in Democratic hands until it is too late.
I can only hope that we are more responsible stewards, and that some of our resident Democrats do not let that power run away with them – or with us.
“When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying the cross.” – Sinclair Lewis
That’s the one that gives me chills.
Can I just say that nationalism and family comes before ANYTHING in the ME– same as anywhere on earth.
Nite all– verry grumpy American hauling self upstairs, now. Bless you all. XOXOOXOXOOXOO
Going to bed, too. Woke up grumpy this morning – hoping for a better day tomorrow!

Indianapolis has a large War Memorial Building shaped like the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus. It was built in 1927 so the interior decor is pure American Fascist in style — gold leaf everywhere — eagles and flags and shields and fasces. It was built at the behest of the American Legion, headquartered in Indianapolis. The Legion was originally openly modeled on Mussolini’s legions — later that link had to be downplayed publicly.
We have way too many military statues and parks in this city but we also get to use them for peace demonstrations. very poignant!
SF Chronicle
I’m not going to “touch” that one….
OT:
I can’t find the link for the lab rescue story, but for those of you who are interested, here’s one of the labs we rescued that day – - it was August, 2000.

Oh, and Mr. LittleDog corrects me, saying we collected over $59,000 in those four days. I think the $32, 000 figure was from a previous liquidation of a puppy mill, also near Houston. That one was all Golden Retrievers.
Anne @130:
My guess is that they’ll never use it – the Republicans will do everything they can to manufacture a “backlash” against the all-powerful executive, and make it even weaker than it was before.
Which branch fills the power vacuum will depend on whether the Republicans have managed to hold onto the legislative branch or not – they’ll own the judiciary for decades to come, I fear.
a story that has continued to haunt me surfaced only fairly recently — President Bill Clinton explained to Veep Al Gore about the Whitewater impeachment process: “It’s a fucking coup d’etat!” In retrospect, it really was — never underestimate these lying thieving scoundrels!
Ghostman, can you please remember the details when you make your (sometimes) worthwhile arguments?
Or, aka:

Thanks, G’man, credit where credit’s due, please.

Probably a little tin foil hatty but …
…and your little dog 136 -
It is incredible to see the change in that lab. You and your husband are really beautiful. Thanks for posting the before and after. The first pic is heartbreaking and it’s great to see the end result of your nurturing.
Very special place in hell for people who abuse and neglect animals.
and your little dog @123
Can’t remember if Olbermann referred to BushCo as radical tonight, but it’s been popping up all over the place. Can’t remember the first place I read it either, now that I think about it. I know Pat Buchanan has called the admin radical and not conservative…but that could just be Pat trying to save Conservatism from going down with this failed Presidency, and not a real belief on his part.

Please excuse the poor puncuation but they/Kimmy really need help
…anyone else catch/enjoy Fox’s little Middle East debacle last night?.. I was only half awake, but I think the exchange went something like this:– when Hannity (I think) tried to argue that Al Qaeda and Hizbollah are one and the same, the guest speaker said that ‘no’ they hate each other and AQ tried to assassinate Hizbollah’s leadership last year. Hannity then ‘redirected’ and said that they work together opportunistically, and that they couldn’t resist working together this time around to “hurt us”. I love it when they just make stuff up.
Nationalism and religion have caused more death and destruction than anything else in the history of humankind. The sooner we all ween ourselves away from such negative mentality which accepts and reveres nationalism and religion and begin to realize that we’re all travelling on a ball through space and that spirituality is a far greater gift than religion, the sooner the Earth and its flawed inhabitants will heal.
Hanretty went on to say that “these women who would criticize the prez for making a friendly gesture are the same women who refused to say anything about Bill Clinton when he was accused of sexually harassing Paula Jones. Where were they when Katherine Willey was grieving for her dead husband and Bill Clinton was rubbing them in all the wrong places?’”
Whatta moron! Who does she think gets to make the determination of what kind of “gesture” it is?
Now Bill Clinton could never be socially moronic enough to do something like Bush did, but if he ever did, this idiot woman would be telling us what a pig he was for doing it.
Thanks JohnISac — I was on the DFA blog before the trolls showed up. And I do remember Kimmy Cash well. As well are Subway of course. [P.S. if you are reading Subway, I still listen to Redline blues - great song]
Will click through and send her something.
neophius and angie and eli, buchanan has been pretty reasonable when it comes to the us presence in the saudi penninsula being a large factor in unrest there. but he’s still an ass.

i think what joe is experiencing may become a self-fulfilling prophecy. when he loses, he will lay the blame on the blogs. even if the blogs are not directly responsible, they will benefit by the association with joe’s defeat.
yes, i’ve been saying that tho the blogs are not responsible, they will gather great momentum and also huge respectibility as “king-makers” in the minds of stoopid people (read: the msm) who think shallow thoughts.
i’ve also been comparing blogtopia (yes! i coined that phrase!) to the goldwater movement of 40 years ago, reminding everyone that it too them several decades to get their memes accepted as cw.

as to “stridency” and “vulgarity,” i have two things to say about that: firstly, if someone…anyone…feels completely and purposely unheard, once they do get a forum for communication, much of the frustration and anger from previously being unable to be a part of the dialouge comes spewing out.
secondly, in light of cheney’s comment about leahy and bush’s mouthful at the g8, don’t be talking to us about good language, my friend.
finally, as to lieberman’s perception that the blogs are behind this all, prof. hanley of quinnipiac said to skippy in the recent interview:
the interview w/prof. hanley is pretty interesting in terms of blogs and their roles in this race…yes, this is a subtle way of blogwhorijng, thanks so much for noticing!

Dude, you stole those words right out of my brain. That calls to the next level where some of us are headed with a smile and others, obviously, with a major frown.
Ghostman (post 36) says:
If I were Lamont, I’d hire those guys with the “Kiss float”, and pay them just to cruise the whole damn state, 7 days a week, non-stop. Funniest, and most provocative “ad” I’ve seen in quite awhile.
The Lamont campaign did not endorse the Kiss float, but Ned said he found it amusing.
CT Bloggers will be driving that float to as many Lieberman events they can and they plan on driving it on Primary Day, August 8, to various polling stations around CT.

Oh, we can’t take credit for how that sweet dog recovered.!
All we did was transport dogs and set up a way for them to collect donations. Actually, Mr. LD did all that. I mostly ran the credit card charges for the donations.
Those dogs were loved and brought along by baby steps by all the wonderful Lab breeders and rescuers around Austin.
I love looking at how Adam bloomed.
Bobby St. Chomsky @ 149:
I absolutely agree and have rejected both since a very early age. I stopped saying the pledge of allegiance and singing the “America” songs in the second grade once I learned my Jehovah’s Witness friend didn’t have to. I wore my parents and grandparents down by the time I was to be confirmed in the Catholic Church. I did not have to be confirmed despite being forced to go through all the other stuff up to that point. I did not attend Catholic School, so I attended “night school.” There was a drive-in movie theater next to my parish church, so my fondest memory was skipping “class” and sliding under the fence with my friend Maureen and watching the movies until our parents came to pick us up. That’s how I saw “Tommy.”
This is my first post to you firedogs. I like you guys. Collectively, you make up for the brilliance I miss in my father who passed in 1994. He had a LOT of flaws, but he was fascinated by history and tended to read a book or three a day. We had great conversations/debates about history, politics, world affairs, and current events. I can assure you, I was probably one of a handful of kids GLUED to the House Impeachment hearings at age seven. My uncle was part of House counsel and was on TV every night hearings were broadcast. Anyway, my Dad taught me to learn by reading from every conceivable angle on a subject and make up my own mind about things. Never be slavish to ideology. I get the sense I’m in good company here.
I’d rather be strident and vulgar than psychopathic and violent like the right wing. Psychopath Michelle Malkin has a couple of clips supporting Lieberman and attacking Ned on Hotair (can’t link to that, but its viewable on youtube.) Put that together with her despicable mockery of Cindy Sheehan and her racist, practically homicidal statements and I can’t even call her “strident” or “vulgar.” The rightwing is almost beyond words.
