Holy Joe may like to characterize Ned Lamont as a one-issue candidate, but as Ned says, Lieberman is the one who is "all Iraq, all the time."
Spazeboy, CTBlogger and I went to hear Ned speak last night at the home of Professor Judith Resnik, who testified before the Judiciary Committee regarding Alito’s confirmation. Professor Resnik was gracious enough to open her home for the publicly announced event (as opposed to Joe, who seems to be avoiding any contact with his constituents which doesn’t come as a complete surprise to them).
Ned took a lot of questions from the people who showed up to hear him, and Spazeboy has an interesting clip from the event (above). From Ned’s perspective, it’s obviously not all about the war.
It’s about the environment:
Joe was the only Democrat in New England to support [the energy bill]. It was a bad bill…I think that after 9/11 our country was ready to make significant choices and real sacrifices and I think energy independence from foreign oil was at the top of the list of just about everybody. That was the time for fuel economy standards, that was the time for conservation, that was the time to deal in a serious way with energy independence and the environment. And we didn’t do that, we did just the opposite. And I think Joe’s wrong on that.
It’s about executive overreach:
A guy named Russ Feingold stood up about four months ago and he said, look we ought to have hearings, and we’re going to determine whether these wiretaps with approval or without approval, without FISA approval, are legal. The American Bar Association says it was illegal, Joe Lieberman says it was illegal, and I think it was illegal. I think we should hold this President accountable for that. If we don’t have the House and we don’t have the Senate, that being we Democrats, then maybe we should introduce a censure resolution. Short and to the point, but a way to say we’re going to hold you accountable.
It was there that the Democrats in general, not just Joe Lieberman, walked away on Feingold. And that surprised me a little bit.
You know it was Joe that said, "look I don’t want to scold the President for what he’s done in the past. Let’s look forward and change the law. He was more than happy to scold Bill Clinton some time ago.
Sure would be nice to give Feingold some help in the Senate in the fall.
Ned will personally match every contribution given today with his own money, so please consider contributing to his campaign via our Blue America ActBlue page. Joe’s got the military industrial complex and Big Pharma at his back; if we want candidates like Ned taking a stand and running for office we need to show up and get Ned’s.

Yay!
Ned!
Dayum, I see huge improvement just since the debate. That’s the learning curve of a U.S. Senator!
Have there been any recent polls? I have not seen any new numbers, it seems, for several weeks now.

Jane, this was a near-EPU and I want to make sure you see and pass it along –
WEATHER ALERT FOR CONNECTICUT THIS WEEKEND
Um, Jane & y’all – might be thinking of back-up indoor plans for this weekend. T.S. Beryl headed your way. Let’s see, how might Team Lamont get out in front of Team JoHo on that?
it scold out there for a pimp
Just a reminder to all of you who haven’t voted in Barbara Boxer’s PAC For A Change Senate challenger competition–you’ve got three days to submit your ballots. The winner gets a fundraising appeal from Senator Boxer; if you’ve seen the PAC’s Actblue page, you’d know that this can mean some serious mojo. Currently Bob Casey is in the lead, which is maddening. I don’t really have anything against Casey. I think he’d be a huge improvement over Rick Santorum, but c’mon. When has Casey EVER trailed in the polls against Santorum? Casey’s got a fairly large warchest, a very good profile, third-party support and stellar poll numbers. He doesn’t need this boost. Every other candidate in the running, including Claire McCaskill and Sherrod Brown (who sit at a close second and third, respectively), needs it more.
Vote your conscience, but also vote with your head please.

Judith Resnik? Wow, I haven’t thought of that name since the last time I thought of the Challenger crew.

I don’t understand the tip-toeing around about Lieb’s wife.

Re: polls: I think some new ones are expected from Quinnapac *tomorrow*!
Ned gets better and better all the time. Supports Russ Feingold’s censure resolution? EXCELLENT.
Paging Monk, paging Monk,
If you’re still here … epu’d message on last thread @ 190 for you
“Sure would be nice to give Feingold some help in the Senate in the fall.” Yes it would. And it would be great to boost Feingold for president in ‘08.
Lieberman’s agenda? Remaining in power. Lamont has just gotta win! Reed’s defeat gives me hope that the sleeping giant is beginning to emerge from it’s coma. Perhaps?
Ned, unlike Cut’n Run Joe, accepts no PAC money …
Re: polls: I think some new ones are expected from Quinnapac *tomorrow*!
I am positively drooling with anticipation. The June numbers looked to me like the only thing keeping Joe afloat was Ned’s total lack of name recognition. I assume that’s much less of a factor now, and decreasing steadily by the day.
Quinnapac it in, Joe
Urban pirate at 73 prev thread re Greg Sargent post on Lieberman ‘refusing to run as a Repub’ Maybe someone more senior and specific could post a comment over there, so joe doesn’t get any “loyalty” points for something he shouldn’t.
Mission accomplished.
Kos is saying No Mojoe will not rule out running as a Republican.
Is that good or bad? At least we wouldn’t have to worry about Ned losing because of the Democratic vote being split. But supposedly Joe was going to split the R’s vote.
I dunno, but my gut says it’s a good thing, even if he wins.

President to Address NAACP Tomorrow
By Darryl Fears
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, July 19, 2006; A05
After six years in office, President Bush has agreed to address the NAACP at its annual national convention in Washington, the White House announced yesterday.
White House spokesman Tony Snow said the president will appear before the nation’s oldest and largest civil rights group tomorrow after years of trading rhetorical jabs with its leadership.
“I think the president wants to make the argument that he has had a career that reflects a strong commitment to civil rights,” Snow said at a news conference.
With the appearance, Bush will avoid becoming the first president since Warren G. Harding to snub the predominantly black organization throughout his term.
from raw story…
ned sounds very good. now, if he would just ditch the halliburton money right this second he would be golden in my book.
With the appearance, Bush will avoid becoming the first president since Warren G. Harding to snub the predominantly black organization throughout his term.
Mission accomplished!
However, he will still be the only GOP president to kiss a Democrat on the mouth.
Is Ned’s donor list posted? I can’t find it on his site.
Steve
Jane, how did you like that NYT story today? Any coverage high on the homepage of the Paper of Record [um …] beginning “Ned Lamont … ” is sweet, and I’d rate the rest of that one about 95% a plus for Ned. How did the campaign like it?
Last year, the Preznit tried to rehabilitate his image by speaking at a major dinner at Black Expo in Indianapolis. Many folk were outside protesting — the crowd attending was friendly to the demonstrators. When Bush entered, he got polite applause. When our popular African-American Congresswoman was introduced, the dinner crowd went wild and gave her a thunderous standing ovation. The contrast of the applause was noticed by everybody including the media. George was punked!
So, when W speaks to the NAACP… will there be Q & A?
The House has just failed to override Bush’s veto on stem cell research. 290 votes were needed for the override:
Republicans 51 Yea 179 Nay 1 Not Voting
Democrats 183 Yeas 14 Nay 4 Not Voting
Independent 1 Yea
Total: 235 Yea 193 Nay 5 Not Voting
OT-Justin Raimondo has an interesting take on the ME crisis, “Playing the Sunni Card.”

I love watching the saga of ole “RG” Joe, thanks Jane. This poor bastard made some really crap choices in the last few years and is paying a high price. He doesn’t seem to have any real scruples though, and his switch to the pug’s is so natural.
isn’t it too damn bad he doesn’t have something hanging over his dirty little head like Tom Delay does. Sure would make the vote more interesting
if this reminds the party that some of us aren’t quite as dull as they think, it may yet make a big difference. Joe sure hates us all, and I imagine a lot of others do quietly. That worries me about net neutrality. Do you think they have an important correlation that we should consider?
Democrats 183 Yeas 14 Nay
Sonofabitch. I’d like to know who the 14 nays were. Not that they would have been enough.
Marty Lederman has a lovely note to Senator Spector about the NSA surveillance program over at Balkinization. http://balkin.blogspot.com/#115332015436240110 If you scroll down from there, there’s also a nice piece on the DoJ’s position on Hamdan (Hamdan? what Hamdan?) and another (by Jack Balkin) on the unitary executive. Good to see Judith Resnick supporting Ned, by the way. I suspect she’s not the only one on the Yale Law faculty doing so.
The really exciting thing to see might be our president kissing some DINO on the tummy. Say Joe Biden… or Hillary.
OT – I like Patti Davis’ take on the veto…
In short: Who cares what this asshole thinks? He’s a bump in the road.
WTF? And the 4 Dems that didn’t vote? God, this is so painful and infuriating.
Blast them, Hugh @ 31!!!!!!!!!!! All the way to perdition. So now it’s up to the states, the private sector and other developed countries, eh?
Why does my guvmint never do anything right???

It gets funnier:

Why does my guvmint never do anything right???
Big-R Right is antithetical to small-R right.
there are usually 4 or 5 members from each party that are absent on any vote — usually health related reasons … I do wonder who those 14 Democratic Members were that voted to uphold the Preznit’s veto …
Let me guess…those 14 Dems didn’t want to undermine the power of the presidential veto? Or did Rove threaten to take their parking places away?
Assholes.
Every. Damn. One.
Thanks, Hugh. Those wankers had better be in deep red districts.
I notice Mollohan on that list, as “Cold Cash” Jefferson was on the list of Dems who voted for estate tax repeal and/or bankruptcy “reform”.
Interesting that the two House Dems under corruption investigations are apparently both DINOs. Or is Mollohan desperately trying to seize some kind of moral high ground?
“A party’s health is directly related to its ideas.”

Snicker, giggle, snicker, gaffaw
I like Patti Davis, as do I her brother. But their mother Nancy is a real piece of work. The only sensible thing I’ve ever heard her support is stem-cell research. Other than that, Nancy is a fascist. Right up there with Babs Bush.
“A party’s health is directly related to its ideas.”
It needs to have a f-ing heartbeat to be healthy.
This stuff about Lamont being all “one issue” is silly. But there is a nugget of truth in it —
The real “issue” is Joe and his haughty attitude towards his constituents and his party. He decided to be responsive to Tim Russert, not Connecticut.
That’s his real problem.
… but as a starlet Nancy gave great blowjobs !
Thanks for the details, Hugh. Let the letter writing begin. Bush is racking up a hell of a karma.
lotus
that article has been giving me the giggle fits all day. It just hit me funny.
And you know it’s our very own Jane that has their knickers in a twist.
Oh, and can you imagine tomorrow night?
Horrors !!
All those noisemaking bloggers together in one place. And with Beer!! Maybe (gasp) even , dare I say it?, diet coke….. they run screaming into the night.
like i said, this gives me giggle fits
What percentage of Democrats are considered progressive? Anyone?
The real “issue” is Joe and his haughty attitude towards his constituents and his party. He decided to be responsive to Tim Russert, not Connecticut.
Can you really vote someone out of office for not representing their constituents? That just seems so… extreme.

Thanks *ilson, More than I thought and a long way to go. I wonder what percentage of voters are considered progressive?
I have been punaised!!
My life is now complete.
Nancy shoulda kept to slobbing the knob … she was 5 months pregnant when Ronnie made an honest woman of her … the child was Ronnie Jr who turned out amazing well
Two of the Reps are from Minnesota — Oberstar and Peterson. They are from rural Minnesota counties and while they generally vote dem, they are from a very religous area and this, I believe, was an incumbent protection vote to keep them out of the soup come November.
But they certainly should be asked about it.
Re: the stem cell vote — Now you know why I was giggling when Jim Oberstar, who is supporting Coleen Rowley, was called a “progressive” in Howie’s thread last weekend. Jim Oberstar is big-time pro-life. In fairness to him, I’m sure his position is sincere. He also represents one of the reddest parts of the state. Those northern Minnesota voters would elect a Republican in a heartbeat if Oberstar weren’t there.
I assume Lewis and McKinney missed the vote because of the aftermath of the Georgia primary. If their votes would have made a difference, I’m sure they would have been there.
Great job Jane. I was reading something about James Madison the other day which reminded me of what you and others are doing in CT.
CNN is carrying an odd story about Americans moving to Israel — can’t they wait for the ethnic cleansing of the Hezbollians to calm down ?
Anybody seen HopeSAT today?
This is the resolved part of the Senate Resolution on Lebanon. Note in particular what counts as number one and two and what the last two points are. Priorities! Priorities!
S.RES. 534 Sponsor: Bill Frist with 61 cosponsors including heroes like Feingold and Durbin as well as blowhards and DINOs like Biden, Clinton, Feinstein, and, of course, Lieberman and many conservative Republicans.
7/18/2006: Passed/agreed to in Senate: Submitted in the Senate, considered, and agreed to without amendment and with a preamble by Voice.
Resolved, That the Senate–
(1) reaffirms its steadfast support for the State of Israel;
(2) supports Israel’s right of self-defense and Israel’s right to take appropriate action to deter aggression by terrorist groups and their state sponsors;
(3) urges the President to continue fully supporting Israel as Israel exercises its right of self-defense in Lebanon and Gaza;
(4) calls for the immediate and unconditional release of Israeli soldiers who are being held captive by Hezbollah or Hamas;
(5) condemns the Governments of Iran and Syria for their continued support for Hezbollah and Hamas, and holds the Governments of Syria and Iran responsible for the acts of aggression carried out by Hezbollah and Hamas against Israel;
(6) condemns Hamas and Hezbollah for exploiting civilian populations as shields and locating their military activities in civilian areas;
(7) urges the President to use all available political and diplomatic means, including sanctions, to persuade the governments of Syria and Iran to end their support of Hezbollah and Hamas;
(8) calls on the Government of Lebanon to do everything in its power to find and free the kidnapped Israeli soldiers being held in its territory, and to fulfill its responsibility under United Nations Security Council Resolution 1559 (adopted September 2, 2004) to disband and disarm Hezbollah;
(9) calls on the United Nations Security Council to condemn these unprovoked acts and to demand compliance with Resolution 1559, which requires that Hezbollah and other militias be disbanded and disarmed, and that all foreign forces be withdrawn from Lebanon;
(10) urges all sides to protect innocent civilian life and infrastructure and strongly supports the use of all diplomatic means available to free the captured Israeli soldiers; and
(11) recognizes that thousands of American nationals reside peacefully in Lebanon, and that those American nationals in Lebanon concerned for their safety should receive the full support and assistance of the United States government.
OT – msnbc/hardball – Pat Buchannan is on again, making sense and hitting hard on the neocons…

BTW, the rumor on Kos/TPM Cafe about HoJo considering the repug offer was mistaken (unfortunately).

Re:Quinnapac CT poll
Political wire quotes article saying poll is due Friday (not tomorrow, Thursday):
state politicos perceive Democratic challenger surging against bewildered incumbent Joe Lieberman in their August 8th primary contest. Anticipation grows on the eve of the release of a Qunnipiac Poll on Friday. How it measured likely primary voters will be a point of particular interest to all sides.

The Senate resolution is shameless in its failure to call for and emphasize the need for immediate cessation of all actions on either side that leads to civilian casualties. Is there not one Senator willing to call for ending the killing?
Does anyone have a link to the video or photos of Bush molesting the German prime minister?
Pics here, viddie here. I think C&L has it as well.

I think C&L has it as well.
Eli, are you having a problem loading C&L, I seem to be getting only up to June 30th.

I just ate.
I would be surprised if Lamont has passed Lieberman but I bet anything he is closing. And regardless of what happens next, with every challenge to the status quo we get a little closer.
I would be surprised if Lamont has passed Lieberman but I bet anything he is closing.
I wouldn’t be. And if he gets close, I think he’ll win on turnout.
{noise}
And now on to the House, there are 3 versions of a Lebanon Resolution in the House they have all been referred to the House Committee on International Relations. None expresses any concern for the plight of Americans trapped in the fighting (unlike the Senate version, albeit as an afterthought). 2 extend condolences well down the list in what they think is important.
Boehner H.Res. 921 13th of 14 points
(13) expresses its condolences to all families of innocent victims of recent violence
Ackerman H.Res. 922 9th of 9 points
(9) expresses its deepest condolences and sympathies to the families of all the innocent victims of the recent violence on all sides.
Clay Shaw H.Res. 923: No mention of concern for either civilians or Americans caught in Lebanon.
Michelle Bachmann MN (who Patty Wetterling is running against)is bat shit crazy.
I already emailed Coleman expressing my disappointment in his vote. Next up is Oberstar (my district)..I think he is Catholic so not a total surprise. Oberstar has been in office something like 30 years & done a great deal positive for the Iron Range which has gotten shafted since Repub Pawlenty became gov.
BarbaraB: this part of the state has been predominately liberal..long history of unions (iron ore mines). John Edwards came to campaign in Hibbing 2004. (I was there). The arena was packed..waited in line for quite awhile to get in.
We have more red spots than in the past but it is still pretty damn blue. The Iron Range is almost totally represented by dems & has been for decades. Right off the top of my head I can’t think of one repub. Dem Gov Rudy Perpich was from Hibbing..that was quite a big deal at the time, a governor from little old Iron Range. Paul Wellstone died on the range & there is a Wellstone Memorial near the plane crash site. Duluth, south end of St Louis county is pretty blue too. University of MN, Duluth has an active collge dem group. We have been to see Al Franken radio show at UMD, Jim Hightower speak in downtown Duluth, Ray McGovern was recently in Duluth to speak & 1490 AM radio in Duluth has gone Air America. I could go on, just know that this area is loaded with blue voters and lakes.
Taegan Goddard’s Political Wire has an interesting post about CT at http://politicalwire.com/archi…..igner.html
And then there’s Peterson [MN] whose district basically is the western 1/3 of the northern 2/3 of the state. Our cabin got redistricted from Peterson to Oberstar in the last election. Peterson is one of the blue dogs in Congress and plays in a group called the Second Amendments. If this were Alabama he’d be one o’the good ol’ boy rednecks. He ran against the Repug about 7 times before he finally got elected. Last I heard he was panting so hard over K Harris his tongue dragged the ground.
No competition from the Repug side because he’s generally to their right. Total el creepo.
Thanks to all who gave links to the groping. I really wanted my sister to see it.
ironranger–totally agree on Michelle Bachman.
Big props to Patty Wetterling, she and Rowley and Klobuchar in the Senate race are diamonds amid the coal slag they’re running against.
Hugh … thanks for the resolution text. Not even a pretense of concern for the rule of law I note … collective punishment, arrests of 1/3 the legislature of Palestine, bombing of civilian targets …

ironranger and Prairie Sunshine — There’s Democrats and then there’s progressive Democrats. I used to live In Minneapolis and campaigned for Don Fraser in the ‘78 primary, It was those northern MN Dems who voted for Bob Short, at least as I recall. When Short won, a lot of us in the DFL progressive coalition voted for Durenberger. I wouldn’t do it now, of course, but the control of the Senate wasn’t at issue then. But that was nearly 30 years ago, and of course things are likely to have changed. They probably even have flouridated water in Brainerd now. :>)
hi siun and thanks to Hugh, as well– good to see you about these parts. this is unreal– Iraqis dead by the thousands, Afghanistan in ruins (again and more) with an enormous no. of dead, Lebanon and Gaza and Israel on fire with more dying all the time. Collective punishment for so many and worse to the Occupied– so much of it a violation of international law and the “quaint” Geneva Conventions.
I think there is a pattern. ;(
Siun, Hugh, others who are well-informed about the ME (I am not):
I am curious, do you think the Israelis will be more successful against Hezbollah than the U.S. has been in putting down the Iraq insurgency?
li’l dog 69, I’m taking a wild guess here, but I surmise that you may be hankering for the following info from Hope:
HopeSpringsATurtle says:

I brought a 100 lbs of dog food, 50lbs of cat food, 3 kennels and some toys, blankies and a hundred bucks. The place is a mess. They vandalized all the offices, murdered or maimed 35 animals, poisoned all the food and generally made a mess. And I blame chimpy.
When our leaders, our role models, display the kind of heinous behavior of this administation, it doesn’t take that long to ‘trickle down’, in the infamous words of Ronald Reagan.
Yes?
new thread (but with site trouble?)
Dana Milbank on Countdown says Bush’s veto of stem cell research may be an effective wedge issue for the Democrats in the fall election.
No, not now. We are involved, by our own devices and lack of interest and knowledge, in an endless war of our own design! That is, until someone screws 1 or more heads on straight and understands the root causes of anger. I hope for it, but don’t expect anything until we become evenhanded and honest while we are still trying to get the black gold from under those arabs– that will never happen until we are honest with ourselves.
as per *ilson, Occupation is a bitch, and imperialism and colonialism led us to this ugly, xenophobic, selective place.
Neuro … personally I trust MFI’s take since he served in Lebanon as a UN Peacekeeper for years and still has close connections there … his take, posted at his blog, is as follows:
“The 1982 invasion produced Hizbollah; this latest aggression against all of Lebanon will either strengthen their support which was beginning to weaken or produce another adversary, more tightly organised, more radical, more militant, more ruthless, and determined to revenge themselves both on those who attacked Lebanon and upon those who facilitated and justified the attack.”
Occupations and assaults do not tend to lead to peace … a lesson we’ve never learned and never encouraged the Israelis to learn.
I also, again, recommend reading the Lebanese bloggers – http://lebanonheartblogs.blogspot.com/
and
http://news.beiruter.com/
since, just as in viewing MSM coverage of our own politics, we find MSM to be less than helpful – even more so the MSM coverage of the ME.
(Lebanese blog links also courtesy of MFI)
neuro — billmon, at least, thinks Hezbollah will win. He links to this analysis by someone he vouches for as an expert: http://www.d-n-i.net/lind/lind_7_18_06.htm

Lotus @ 101… What? What in the world has been vandalized that is obviously a place of good works for animals? Not specifically, just generally. Thanks.
neurophius — good question. I wish I understood this better.
I assumed, perhaps naively, that Israel’s long-run security depends on stable neighboring governments that wish it no harm. So I have a hard time understanding how it serves Israel’s interests by radicalizing more of the Lebanese and proving that the Hezbollah is the only entity capable of striking back when Lebanon is attacked?
I assumed that Israel’s long-run security also depended on preventing/discouraging stronger neighbors from supporting anti-Israeli movements with more lethal weapons. If that’s true, how does it serve Israel’s interests to prove that the only way the Lebanese (or Palestinians) can defend themselves against attack is to seek more sophisticated arms and military ties from Syria and Iran?
I do not understand why our courageous Congress-critters conclude that what is happening now will help serve Israel’s long-run interests, assuming without argument that US interests are the same.
CA DFLer: The New Braunfels, TX, animal shelter. By fiends, obviously.
Thanks Busted and Lotus.
The New Braunfels story is too awful.
I have lots of dog equipment (a storeful, in fact) just 50 more miles up the road in Austin.
I’ll see if she’s around later.
Hugh @ 5:12 pm (#91) – The latest bit of insanity going ’round the wingnutsphere is that most of those American citizens are Hezbollah sympathizers. One of the clowns who believes this posted over at Taylor’s site:

Go ahead if you want and follow all the links. I stopped after a three or four. Needless to say, our Michelle “never met a brown person I liked” Malkin is one of the citations.
siun, thanks for the link to Human Rights Watch. I just got back from it.
neurophius, earlier today I asked what Israel’s strategic objectives were. They aren’t going to destroy Hezbollah because it is part and parcel of the largest group the Shias in Lebanon.
While not succeeding in their objective of destroying Hezbollah, Israel will weaken Lebanon making it more unstable and dangerous.
Its actions are therefore likely to be counterproductive. This is not rational but is in keeping with the Israeli proclivity to view all problems as resolvable through the use of military force.
I have noted that this not only resembles but is tied into neoconservatism. Neocons like their allies in the Israeli right think you can solve problems by shooting at them. 39 years of occupation in the one and the conflict in Iraq on the other have taught them nothing.
Lotus @ 111 Tears just sprang to my eyes. How may we help?
li’l dog, Hope may not be around tonight. She didn’t sleep last night, from the sound of it, and only had a 3-hr nap midday today, so she thought she’d probably crash early tonight. (Never can tell, though.)
Know what you mean, CA DFLer. HopeSAT is the best answerer of your question, so you may have to hang around until tomorrow for that (unless she crops up again at FDL tonight).
I love the Progressive Caucus, The Department of Peace is long over due!
Rename “The Department of Defense” to the its real name, The Department of War.
Any one over here ever looked real hard at repealing the 17th Amendment? This is the utimate nightmare for the so called “The worlds most deliberative body.” Bring this one up to a Senator, and you will get the evil eye.
Go Ned!
Something I read earlier today (was it on MFIs site? something I linked to from there?) kinda went ka-ching for me – that the Israeli “adventure” in Lebanon is largely about access to water. Any thoughts on this from the well-informed folks here?
Back to the stem cell veto: Y’all have got to see this photo of a “snowflake baby’s” opinion of Bush. http://michellemalkinisanidiot.com/?p=111 (h/t Atrios)
Eli,
Those wankers had better be in deep red districts.
Lipinski’s district is the southwest side of chicago. his father was a major machine guy and was a long time congressman. he retired just before the 2004 election and slated his son to run in his place. he was just reelected despite a primary challenge.
Guiterrez, who wasn’t there to vote, is a chicago congressman too. there was a huge immigration rally here today. it’s possible he was in town for it. not sure, but that could be why he didn’t vote.

I’m surprised the Turks haven’t invaded sooner. The deal is this: 1) The Turks hate the Kurds and always have. 2) The Kurdish homeland in Iraq is the source of the rivers that supply Turkey with most of its fresh water; there’s no way in hell that the Turks will let their age-old enemies control their water supply. 3) The proposed Iraqi Kurdish capital, Kirkuk, is one of the wealthiest oil cities in Iraq. No way will the Turks let their age-old enemies have the resources to set up a viable nation.

engaged by lotus (in the most intelligent way) on an earlier thread today,
I have a theory about what’s going on here. Israel has made no secret of its desire to see the US take out Syria and Iran. Don’t forget that the PNAC memo was written for Likud, and Kadima is just Likud with a unilateral partition plan. The neocons who still dominate our foreign policy would like to oblige, since they continue to think hegemony is in our best interests, but they have a problem: Iraq didn’t turn out they way they’d thought it would. It was supposed to serve as one giant base. Oops. So now what? Well, we saw a lot of trial balloons about bombing Iran, which responded by reminding us — and Israel — that it could make that very, very expensive. Among the weapons in Iran’s arsenal was Hezbollah and (perhaps) Hamas. Oh, and by the way, the Shiite militias in Iraq and the fact that our soldiers were sitting ducks. So if you really, really want a war with Iran, but you don’t want to fight on several fronts simultaneously, what do you do? Fight serially. Today Hamas and Hezbollah, tomorrow maybe you bribe Syria to sit this one out (bribery worked with Libya, after all.) Then all you have to worry about is those sitting American ducks in Iraq and, oh yes, the fact that Iran can take out the oil shipping lanes. If I were Iran, I’d start looking for bunkers when the US announces it has won the war in Iraq and pulls the troops out. The Shia in Iraq will be too occupied fighting each other and the Sunnis to be much help to Iran. Wonder what Rummy has planned for those sea lanes…
One of our Iron Range dems, Dave Dill, is as my husband says a republican in dem clothing. When the owner of a local tiny town paper (a typcial total wingnut) praises Dill in his republitorials, that says it all.
We remember the Don Fraser race. The big vote turnout here against Fraser was because he was in favor of including Lake Vermilion in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area plan, no cabins, resorts or motorized access. Locals did eventually (after a lot of turmoil) accept the main area but Lake Vermilion was where they drew the line. It was wrenching for Ely area people to give up their homes, cabins & resorts so adding Lake Vermilion (more populated) was going too far for most. There is also a history of ironrangers feeling (mostly justified) that the metroplitan area gets most of the attention & $ from senate & house as do other communities outside the cities. There was then, & now at times, resentment toward those twin city people who didn’t live & work here (ahem, they were called the 612ers-area code) enjoying our lakes, etc, but telling natives who live here year round how we should do things. It doesn’t go over very well with ironrangers.
Gov Pawlenty & his appointees have been very busy raiding the Iron Range Resources & Rehabilitation Board funds & not giving them back. These funds collected from Taconite taxes are used to create diversity & help communities here..mining has been the main industry with logging & tourism secondary so this area has gone through some major economy downturns. Ironically, Gov Pawlenty has been here looking for property on Lake Vermilion. I really hope that when he is booted out of office, he doesn’t retire here.
Fires have burned over 25 sq miles in the BWCA..extremely dry here with temps in high 90’s last weekend. There is a lot of blown down timber from 1999 tornado (600 sq miles). Firefighters from other states on site & helcopters from Canada to do controlled burns. We are about an hour from Ely & on sunday there was a heavy smoke smell here. Praying for rain.
Is this the same Judith Resnik who wrote an op-ed in the NY Times a while ago arguing that there should be a supermajority rule for confirming judges? http://select.nytimes.com/gst/…..94DB404482
I have thought since then that it would make a lot of sense and a organized push for a change to requiring a supermajority would be a good way to get out the arguments of why filibustering judges makes sense. It makes sense for it to be extra hard to be confirmed when we’re talking about a life time appointment.
Judy Resnik! A blast from my past.
I had the privilege of taking two courses from her at the University of Southern California Law School, much longer ago than either she nor I would like to admit. She is a brilliant scholar, an even better teacher, and a total mensch-ette (if that’s a real word).
Hardly surprising that she would be supporting Ned.
Go, Judy, Go.
And thanks to FDL for being on the side of the angels in Connecticut. Y’all are an inspriation.
