(Coleen Rowley joins us this morning for a chat. Please stop by and welcome her in the comments. — JH)
Coleen Rowley was the very first congressional candidate to whom I donated money this year. That’s how sure I was that she was the real deal. And back in February I wrote an endorsement of her on Down With Tyranny. If I could be sure you’d hit that link and read the original, I wouldn’t have to repeat any of it and I could just pick up from where I left off. (But, not being sure, I may repeat a line or two.)
I called Coleen a few days ago to catch up after what has been a very hectic four months for her. She was very excited when she came to the phone, brimming over with a kind of cautious optimism that must have been exacerbated by that morning’s MINNEAPOLIS STAR TRIBUNE, the most read newspaper in her sprawling district south of the Twin Cities.
It wasn’t an editorial endorsement or even a news story that had helped get Coleen into such a great mood. Much to her surprise the paper was carrying a huge ad from the League of Conservation Voters. After Kline (her opponent) took nearly $100,000 in legal bribes from Big Oil to help scuttle environmental protections, it should come as no surprise to anyone– least of all Coleen– that a non-partisan conservation group like the League of Conservation Voters would be steamed enough to rate him a flat zero on conservation issues and go to the extraordinary lengths of attacking his abysmal record in an advertisement.
This Kline character is serving his second term in Congress, having beaten a Democratic incumbent in 2002 after the suburban/exurban district was gerrymandered to make it more Republican. Although Republican registration beats Democratic registration and Bush took the district, narrowly, in 2000 and 2004, it is very much a moderate district.
John Kline, however, is no moderate.
He’s the most extreme right-winger of anyone in the Minnesota congressional delegation, with a political outlook far better suited to his native Texas than to Minnesota. Certainly Kline’s "default position" in Congress has been that of a rubber stamp most of the time. But when he’s not a rubber stamp, it’s always because Bush, DeLay, Boehner and the radical Republicans controlling Congress are not far enough to the right for him!
Kline’s voting record is to the right of Tom DeLay’s and at the very bottom of the congressional barrel with the worst loons and miscreants– from Georgia’s racist imbecile Lynn Westmoreland and Florida’s bribe-taking Tom Feeney to the embarrassingly savage and psychiotic Jean Schmidt of Ohio and Iowa’s xenophobic maniac Steve King. Nice company.
How does a radical and over-the-edge extremist like Kline get away with it in moderate and enlightened Minnesota? Well, he doesn’t show fangs and he does his best to hide his far right ideology behind the sham of a bland, grandfatherly veneer.
At this time in the election cycle a lot of campaigning gets done at the district’s 40-some small town parades. Coleen and her volunteers go to them all, handing out printed bookmarks that highlight her issues and positions on one side and Kline’s on the other side. He’s handing out recipes for fried chicken and peppermint candy.
When his real recipes are all for unpopular and indigestible dishes like the privatization of Social Security and the building of permanent bases in Iraq (seasoned with his kooky record for voting against broadly bipartisan initiatives like securing the former Soviet Union’s nuclear materials), what can he do but try every which way possible to hide the record from his constituents and confuse them with standard GOP hot button attacks.
The efficacy of those attacks are unlikely to make much of a dent in former FBI agent/TIME Magazine "Person of the Year" Coleen Rowley. She’s a solution-oriented, commonsense moderate with 100% progressive instincts and an aggressively independent mind. (The aggressively independent mind part is what scares Rahm Emanuel, who, predictably, has done what he could to ignore this race and keep the national spotlight away from it, regardless of Coleen’s starlike qualities.)
While Emanuel was warning Democratic candidates that "radicals" like John Murtha and Cindy Sheehan would be toxic for campaigns, Coleen was down in Crawford showing solidarity with Cindy. And her well thought-out position on Iraq sounds very much like Jack Murtha’s. It’s going to be up to grassroots and netroots activists to help get Coleen’s message across so that she winds up in Congress.
Even with Emanuel and the DCCC incumbent-protection racket frightened of her clear, proud progressive approach to issues, Coleen has been endorsed by Russ Feingold and local Minnesota progressives like Congressman Jim Oberstar, as well as by the National Women’s Campaign Fund, the AFL-CIO, the United Auto Workers, AFSCME, SEIU and virtually all of organized working people.
Jonathan Singer did a great q&a with Coleen about 6 weeks ago at My DD that will help give you a glimpse into this remarkable woman’s mind and give you an idea about how extraordinary it would be to have someone of Coleen’s experience and calibre serving in Congress. In contrast, local bloggers in the district have been following John Kline very, very closely and… they don’t hold back.
Coleen’s been running a real grassroots campaign — holding giant banners over freeways, handing out the bookmarks I mentioned above, meeting voters one on one every single day.
She needs volunteers and she needs donations. Please consider going to the ACT BLUE Page and helping Coleen out as best you can. It’s the only way our political system won’t be completely dominated by multimillionaires or by candidates beholden to Big Business’ pernicious interests.
Last weekend filmmaker Robert Greenwald stopped by our chat with Rick Penberthy and he has donated 30 DVDs of the incredible new movie THE BIG BUY– TOM DELAY’S STOLEN CONGRESS. The film is the story of how the DeLay political machine has undermined American democracy and it is a perfect reminder of why it is so crucial to do whatever we can to help candidates like Rick Penberthy, John Laesch, Jon Tester, Ned Lamont, Larry Kissell and Coleen Rowley take back our government.
Anyway, to make these DVDs even more special, Robert has autographed each DVD for us. The first 30 people to donate to Coleen’s campaign here will get a DVD. (A lot of people have asked that I don’t send them the stuff we give away, telling me they are happy to just make the donation and for me to pass along the give-away to someone else — so if you just want to donate and would like to pass the DVD on to the next donor, indicate it by adding a penny to your donation.)

Howdy folks. We’re ready to get started here. I’m David Bailey, one of Coleen’s staffers, and I’ll be transcribing Coleen’s comments during this show.
Our opponent, John Kline, is apparently a close personal friend of John Hinderaker or PowerLine, and so we appreciate the opportunity to use Firedoglake’s big megaphone to get our message out.
Hi. I think Coleen is out campaigning and she’ll be with us in a few minutes.
Hey Welcome to firedoglake, Coleen
And welcome David
Where are you and Coleen now? Is today a campaign day?
To start with, let’s discuss some of Kline’s other connections. He’s one of th emost extreme Grover Norquist-style, drown-the-government-in-the-bathtub Republicans. But with the demise of DeLay, he’s running out of cronies. He recently brought in Denny Haster to do a fundraiser for him just two weeks after the revelations about Hastert’s self-serving earmark in the transportation bill.
FITZ? FDL the most! Howie et alia!
We’re in Belle Plaine, MN, at barbeque days.
They wouldn’t let candidates march, so before the parade our campaign was out handing our ‘educational bookmarks’ to the crowd. It lists Kline’s low rankings on a number of issues. Just recently in a Twin Cities paper, the League of Conservation voters followed up on one of those issues exposing Kline’s anti-environment voting record.
I didn’t know Colleen Rowley was running for Congress! That is so great!
Do we have a mail in (not electronic) address for sending paper checks?
Are you handing out the bookmarks? Is Kline there too?
We haven’t seen Kline here. No doubt, he’ll be marching in a parade on the other side of the district, in Hastings, this evening. Our district has a total of about 40 parades during the summer.
Hello, Howie and Coleen — donation complete, returning to read the post!
========

David, can you give us the address so people who don’t use ACT BLUE can send a check?
Yes! Campaign contributions are always welcome! For those wanting to send snail-mail donations, the address is:
Coleen Rowley for Congress
PO Box 241598
Apple Valley, MN 55124
Howie, therial candidate!
But how do we get credit “here” if we donate on ActBlue?
(I actually want the DVD.)
When you and Kline are at these parades, have you ever come face to face? Have you had many interactions with him?
Howie, I’m sorry I missed you last week (but I made up for it). I’m so glad to see people like Coleen running for Congress, I read her letter to the FBI this morning.
I went to a breakfast yesterday with Gloria Steinhem, who mentioned that 60%-80% of those polled in 2004 thought that, in supporting George Bush, they were voting for different policies than Bush actually supports.
We want to make sure the voters in our district, and nationally, don’t make the same mistake this time.
Prof, we have 30 signed DVDs and only 2 contributions on ACT BLUE so far today. So if you go to ACT BLUE and donate, I get your name and address and send the DVD. That easy
Citizen Colleen -
I’m sending a check today.
We’ve met face-to-face a number of times. He’s generally very dismissive, just walking right by saying “Hi, Coleen”. In a recent parade, he actually came close to blows with a supporter from a different DFL campaign.
Coleen, when you listen to voters in your district, what are the issues they ask you about?
David – Welcome! Is Kline cozying up to John Boehner? Boehner seems to be the stereotypical bought-and-paid-for sleazy politician.
The Democrats ask: “How are you going to beat John Kline”? The Republicans either don’t listen, or don’t bring up any issues, and there’s a group of about 30% or so who are undecided, who are very interested in my candidacy.
Yep, most people don’t seem to understand what they’re voting for. How can you realistically overcome that, Coleen? I mean, it seems like a daunting task to reach hundreds of thousands of constituents and then make them focus and make them understand that what Kline tells them is filled with lies. How do you do that? I guess a TV debate will help to some extent.
Usually when there’s a big interactive post with a candidate there’s a pre-announcement and a little more explanation that the candidate or their representatives will be participating in the comments. This seems like kind of a surprise to me.
I know who Coleen Rowley is, but wasn’t aware she was running. This is real, right? I want it to be. it just seems odd.
A large percentage, 60%-70% have a sense of foreboding about the future and think the country is not on the right path.
Northwest Airlines is a major employer in our district, as if Ford motor company, who just announced a plant shutdown that will affect many in our district. These people have very real personal concerns about their future.
Of course, this week, the ad by the League of Conservation voters, and a recent LTE which pointed out Kline’s 0% rating for two years running by the group Disabled American Veterans has given a real boost to the campaign.
Welcome, Coleen. I’m so happy you decided to enter the world of politics. It certainly needs more people willing to stand up for their principles such as yourself, and thanks so much for stopping by FDL this morning.
Colleen, hat tip for your extraordinary courage in these days of post-ethical America. Best wishes in your campaign. MN deserves honest representation, as does the entire country.
This shows the power of one person. This one letter about Kline’s 0% rating from the DAV has had a ripple effect into the traditional media. And Kline has voted against enough groups like DAV that he’s running out of supporters.
Howie,
Nice piece about Rowley.
Corey (#29), we do this every Saturday at this time and I hope you can come every week. I’m glad you found it this time and I hope you’ll tell all your friends. (I have to admit, though, that we don’t get a TIME Magazine “person of the year” every week!)
Corey 29 — please feel free to click through on all the links Howie so helpfully provided.
And the Time cover would be fully complete with Bunnatine Greenhouse included.
Am also very happy that the LCV is doing the right thing and going after Kline. That’s wonderful.
By the way, in the body of the story above is a link to the League of Conservationist Voters ad Coleen has been refering to. Just click the link. It’s a very cool ad that they did about Kline and his abysmal record.
Colleen – I love the fact that an LTE really has a ripple effect! Since Russ Feingold has endorsed you, are you planning any public events with him?
Coleen, do you think we needed the USA Patriot Act? As I read your letter, I just have to wonder if any new legislation/domestic spying was actually needed to combat terror threats in the U.S.
A televised debate would certainly help, but Kline’s strategy appears to be hiding behind his image as a statesman, handing out fried chicken recipes at these parades. He will do his best to avoid engaging me on the issues for as long as possible.
So we need the help of those like you in the progressive blogosphere who can call attention to someone who is probably one of the 30 most right-wing, 30 worst voting records in Congress. Otherwise, he’s going to hide behind recipe cards.
The Justice Department has done its best to slime Rowley.
And thanks, Colleen for getting even more involved with Democracy. Endorsment from Russ Feingold carries a lot of weight with many of us progressives.
Howie — I donated before I read the post, and I have a copy of the Greenwald DVD from YKos. It’s very generous of Robert to donate these — please pass my “earned” ActBlue copy on to someone else.
For Coleen:
Will there be a TV debate? Has Kline debated before? What lessons can be gleaned from his previous debates? Why would an incumbent (and one with so much to hide about his positions!) agree to debate a challenger?
Also, have you found his most recent FEC filings helpful? Do they contain donors his constituents need to know about?
Thanks again for joining us, Coleen, and I hope you find our megaphone more helpful than your opponent finds the Rocket’s echo chamber!
Loving my Saturdays with Howie!
Oh and please consider giving to Colleen’s campaign. Not only is it a great investment in America, but you will probably be the only one on your block with an autographed copy of a Robert Greenwald DVD. That’s a keeper.
Jane:
Sorry. Just walked in from mowing the lawn in the pleasant 98 degree Missouri heat. Addled. And I’m realizing from other comments that this may be a regular Saturday occurance on FDL I wasn’t aware of. I apologize.
“Coleen” at 3:
I’m David Bailey, one of Coleen’s staffers, and I’ll be transcribing Coleen’s comments during this show.
David (for Coleen), thanks for being here.
When I worked in the US Senate decades ago I was in charge of “legislative correspondence” for a Senator. Even the signatures of Senators are done with an “auto pen” or the technologically modern equivalent.
So “Coleen,” if you’re David, please give us the refreshing honesty of signing the posts “David, for Coleen.”
It will be good practice for a new, honest Representative from MN-2.
Now, let me go and contact some friends from Minnesota and get them also to donate at Act Blue.
A lot of the Patriot Act was not even designed as a response to 9/11. It was on the drawing table before the attacks occurred. The FISA wall falling was probably the most significant thing the Patriot Act accomplished, however, the idea of a FISA wall was a misunderstanding to begin with. So the Patriot Act wasn’t even needed to address that.
To the extent that the Patriot Act has enabled the overcollection of data, it’s done nothing to help pursue the war on data, because it means we’re now looking for a needle in a haystack while piling on more hay.
We have 70,000 potential terrorist targets now, including ice cream shops and whatnot shops. Is it really helping the war on terror to include those?
Coleen, I remember reading about you, watching your testimony, and being very glad our country has people like you in its service. I was so angry that they didn’t listen to you; so perplexed. I couldn’t understand it and still can’t.
Bravo and may you win in a landslide!
John Emerson — that was in exceptionally poor taste. And uncalled for.
I just contributed — I also just saw on CNN that the temperature in Minneapolis is 98ºF — let your opponent try to poo-poo global warming now!
Corey 48 — your suggestion that there needed to be a bit at the front saying Colleen was in the comments was valid and I took it, thank you very much. Something like that should always be here.
Jane, what I was saying is that the Justice Department has joined the anti-Rowley campaign. Soemthing that has to be dealt with. The whole government is now part of the Republican Party now.
As for Russell Feingold, I endorsed his call for the censure of George Bush with an article in the Huffington Post.
(This is from David: I would sign all posts with my name, but it’s difficult enough keeping up with the conversation as it is. The words I type are Coleen’s words, and I did reveal my ’secretarial’ duties at the top of the comment thread. That will have to do).
As for Russell Feingold, I endorsed his call for the censure of George Bush with an article in the Huffington Post.
Colleen(David): Russ met with several Los Angeles based bloggers a few months back, and we really took a lot of good away from the meeting. If you have any plans to be out her in sunny SoCal anytime in the near future, Jane can put you in touch with us, we’d love to meet with you, and try and arrange even more campaign help.
Actually, I think that Coleen’s responses in the article about the DOJ IG report completely satisfy me. I don’t look for perfect candidates, but I do look for ones with integrity and courage, and she has a mountain of both.
Go Coleen!
John Emerson 55 – I understand exactly what you were doing. Do you think people want to show up here and read about the crap that is being hurled at them? I’m always amazed when folks link to nasty stuff that has been written about me and Christy in our own comments threads, like they’re doing us some kind of big favor to make sure everyone sees it. I’m sure Colleen is well aware of what is going on. To introduce it into a thread where we’re discussing her candidacy and the issues surrounding it is somewhat less than thoughtful.
Kline has considerable personal stock holdings in Pfizer — the disclosure forms say it’s between $1,000 and $15,000. And that doesn’t include nearly $100,000 in campaign contributions from Big Pharma. No wonder he so strongly supported the provision of Medicare Part D barring Medicare from negotiating lower prices from drug companies.
Thank you Coleen, the Patriot Act reminds me of the Samuel Johnson quote, “Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel.”
Howie — Prof’s point at 49 is well-taken, and perhaps an issue that could be standardized across (this and) future Saturday posts. The voice of the candidate vs. the voice of the staffer, as we heard last week with Rick.
For Coleen:
Are you constrained by your former employment from speaking on specific issues? Are there things you need to vet with the FBI before talking about them publicly? How does that process work in a campaign for public office?
Repeating the link for donating to Coleen:
http://www.actblue.com/page/downwithtyranny#8659
Coleen, will you and Amy Klobuchar (Minnesota’s Democratic candidate for the open Senate seat) be doing any joint appearances? Will her presence on the ticket help you? Will yours help her? And will Al Franken campaign for you in the district?
#62: The rule for pre-publication review on anything touching on my FBI career follows you to your death. However, everyone realizes it’s not practical to follow that rule in a political campaign, so I’ve ignored it.
For instance, when I was still working for the FBI, and wrote an op-ed criticizing Ashcroft, I had to go through pre-publication review and wait 29 days before it became public. Even though the things I said are the same things that any member of the public might said.
We don’t formally campaign with the Klobuchar campaign, but Al Franken is one of my #1 supporters. He has come to give his comedic insights at 3 or 4 different events for me, with another one coming up July 23rd in Brainerd.
Al Franken is a one-man band. He’s really doing a lot of work supporting me and other progressive Congressional candidates.
ot – cnn has talking heads blathering about the plame suit
Jane, I also was not aware that Coleen was here personally.
It seems to me that the Justice department attack is easily answerable, and also another piece of evidence about the politicalization of every branch of government.
You say “I understand exactly what you were doing”. I think that you misunderstand. Please explain more clearly.
I say take the DVD and donate it to the nearest small-town library.
Coleen — Please tell us more about your contacts with the D-trip-C and Congressman Emanuel. Is your race “ranked” by any DeeCee consultants in their skewed tier system? Have you been asked to hire consultants in order to gain DCCC support?
We’re on the side of the gate-crashers, in case you hadn’t noticed…..
Howie — DWT is the #1 ActBlue “hot site” today, whatever that means….

#67 Joseph Wilson and I are co-authors for a chpater in the book ‘Patriotism, Democracy and Common Sense, Restoring America’s Promise at Home and Abroad.’ And we presented out chapter the day before his big NYT piece revealing his identity was published, thus leading to the outing of his wife in retaliation.
Coleen Rowley 60 — Kline has considerable personal stock holdings in Pfizer — the disclosure forms say it’s between $1,000 and $15,000. And that doesn’t include nearly $100,000 in campaign contributions from Big Pharma. No wonder he so strongly supported the provision of Medicare Part D barring Medicare from negotiating lower prices from drug companies.
I hope this becomes a big issue. It’s amazing that people are so incensed about the cost of healthcare and nobody seems to pay the political price for these obvious conflicts of interest.
Thirty worst voting records:
Make a list. Call them the dirty thirty.
Highlight that he is on it.
Send to all newspapers etc.
Going over now to actblue.
Our campaign has a professional relationship with Rahm Emmanuel. I have met him 4 or 5 times, and the focus of each meeting was fundraising. His focus, understandably is on money.
I’m glad Al Franken is being helpful. Are there others who you would like to bring into the district to help you? Are there any elected Dems who would be useful? Jack Murtha?
Hey John Emerson — reach Jane directly at the email address provided at the top of the blog, please. We’re busy here talking about Coleen’s candidacy, and would rather not read about what you meant you thought Jane thought you thought you meant.
Hi Coleen! I had the great pleasure of chatting with you after I heard you speak at a Sunday fellowship meeting a couple of years ago. You were still in the FBI, but i was so impressed with you, I begged you to consider running for office. I was so thrilled when you announced your candidacy!! While I am not in your district, I have been contributing to your campaign as much as I can. Everybody – this is a truly principled and brilliant woman, and I encourage you to support her as much as you can!
Go Coleen!
Coleen,
Thank you so much for your courage and conviction. I just donated what I could, so wish it could be more. You are my heroine. Bless you.
John Emerson 68 — If you want to continue this conversation my email address is listed in the contacts section. Now that you realize Coleen is here to discuss her race, I ask that you be respectful of that.
#75: We would greatly apprecite getting Jack Murtha involved in the campaign. We’ve put out feelers to his office asking for his support, but his office is pretty overwhelmed right now.
We have been getting a great deal of help from Minnesota’s 8th District congressman, Jim Oberstar.
Coleen you are an American Hero.
I decided to forgo lunch and sent 10 bucks to Coleen. Oh, and five to Ned!
Go Coleen! Give em’ Hell!
Does anyone here know Murtha?
egregious (#73)- I like the idea of “The Dirty Thirty.” But actually Coleen was being kind to Kline when she said he’s amont the 30 worst. He’s among the 20 worst when it comes to overall extremist voting records.
Coleen – what kind of advertising are you/do you plan on doing?
Coleen — I checked out the map of MN-02, and I wonder if you could tell us more about it and the people who live there. It sounds like they REALLY like parades, for instance, but can you paint a word picture for us of who you meet at those parades, what they do for a living (now that they are seeking work elsewhere than Ford).
For instance, are there megachurches there that are politicized?
Thanks!
I’ve put out some radio ads, we have WMV and streaming video available on the web site, we’re going to do more with public access. And we do visibility holding banners on local overpasses — we get views from about 10,000 cars an hour.
And we should have a new streaming video on the site soon.
In the past, I spoke frequently at churches, but now that I’m running for office it’s become much more difficult. The churches that are amenable to having me come and speak are concerned about losing their tax-exepmt status.
Coleen,
Are you being interviewed on local radio and television stations? You have such high national as well as regional visability I’d think you’d be a ratings grabber.
Well, it’s 2:00 PM here, and the best way of meeting the public is participating in parades. I’ve got to take off to the Hastings River Days Parade, so I think I need to sign off know.
There are more bookmarks to pass out, and more inquiring minds, who need to know the truth about John Kline.
(Last comment)
I’ll be appearing on KDWA in Hastings at 4:00 PM Monday in Hastings, and then at KDHL in Faribault the following week.
And a reporter from MPR, the local NPR affiliate, will be spending a day with me sometime soon.
among the twenty worst…
not such a good rhyme available.
a la ‘better targets in iraq’ than afgh
Well that was exciting. I’ve been waiting all week for this thread. A cliche, but Coleen really is one of my heroes.
Coleen, I copied this from your opponent’s website:
Care to comment on the “defeat” of the Taliban? Care to comment on the world being “a safer place” under Bush’s policies that have fostered a regional war in the Middle East?
Thanks!
That the likes of Coleen Rowley is seeking elective office says to me there still remains some wheeze of the notion of government of by and for actual smart caring committed people, and there are still those who care enough about it to put their lives on the line. Coleen, you are a personal hero and godspeed. I am at ActBlue with bucks for you regularly along with Ned.
(Really the last comment)
This has been great! Thanks to Howie and to FDL for giving me the chance to talk to the left blogosphere.
Be sure to visit the site at
http://www.coleenrowley.com/index.php
I have no questions, Colleen. I just wanted to add my thanks to you for standing up and best wishes to you in your campaign.
Oh, and I contributed on the Act Blue page as well. I would have anyway, but I’m not so noble as to forgo that signed DVD, if I qualify.
Particularly since there were so many good candidates on your list, Howie, that my credit card gave a little groan when I was finished.
They also serve who wield the plastic.
Wow, it’s amazing how much of a Calgon moment these Blue America posts are. “Take me away” indeed: I feel like I am there at the parade on a hot Saturday in Minnesota, and that the bookmarks being given away have my fingerprints on them!
Thanks Howie, thanks Coleen, thanks David, thanks Jane, thanks FDL!
(Really, really, really the last comment, I promise)
Thanks to Sharkbabe and all the rest of the folks who are ‘bucking’ for me.
There’s the good, the bad and the ugly in politics, but chatting with you folks has been part of the ‘good’.
It has been an honor having you with is Coleen (and David). Thanks very much for joining us– and thanks very much for what you have done and are doing for our country.
Coleen — I think John Amato (C&L) has some contacts with Murtha. I’ll put you in touch with him.
I like Blogtopia, for the forces of good. (And Blogostomy, for the evil ones.)
It’s easy to donate via ActBlue.
What a contrast of good new candidate versus one of the “Dirty Thirty” incumbents in Congress.
thunder,
My term is “Blogectomy”
I enjoy watching the contributions come in almost as much– but not quite– as I like watching the questions and answers every Saturday. This week I can tell you that about half the people who donated to Coleen also kicked in something for at least one other candidate. That’s awesome!
Coleen! I’ve been supporting your campaign since you declared it. You GO!
I know you’re gone, Colleen, but in case you read this later: I add my thanks that you’re willing to run for office and my thanks for all you’ve done. You are a real hero. And I also contributed, so thank you, Howie, for creating this great mechanism for supporting great candidates.
Well, blogostomy for right-wing blogs; blogectomy for what we are doing to people like future private citizen Lieberman.
Wow. Just checked out Coleen’s website – it’s really great, colorful, active, interactive, very grassroots oriented. I’ll be watching this race with anticipation.
Thanks to Coleen, David, Howie and Jane.
Days like today give me the feeling we’re actually effecting some positive change.
Coleen, I’m delighted that you could join us. Howie does good work. I used to live in Minnesota and I’m chuckling quietly to myself at the concept of Jim Oberstar as “progressive.” On the other hand, given how far right the alleged center has moved, I guess he is. Has Marty Sabo been helpful?
Oh, and in case anyone is wondering whether Kline could really be all that bad, the home page of his house.gov site tells you instantly that yes, indeedy, he is. I won’t link to it, since this is about Coleen’s vision and not Kline’s delusions, but his headline is “United States will prevail in war against Islamic extremists.” The rest of the site reveals that we’re beyond Neanderthal and into troglodyte territory. I wll now go and contribute to Coleen.
Dang! One “l” in Coleen??? My only excuse is my mother’s name was Colleen.
I believe one must credit skippy! when using the term blogtopia….
http://xnerg.blogspot.com/
By the way, it looks like next week we’re going to have Bruce Braley as our guest. He’s running for the open seat in Iowa’s first CD. He’s the only real progressive (and man, is he ever) running for congress in Iowa this year.
Thanks, Howie. Nice work.
Hi Colleen — Just checked in and thrilled to see you being highlighted today. I live in Minnesota (the 6th District) but am thrilled to have donated to your campaign already. Not much — I lived on a fixed income but you are a godsend for our threatened Minnesota.
And you have proved your courage and are doing so today. Just keep on telling it like it is. But watch out for October — then is when they will sneak up and slime.
Thank you for giving me back some hope for Minnesota.
I had to make up for missing Rick Penberthy last week, Howie. And John Laesch sent me a nice thank you letter. And heck, Ned needs help against the forces of joenertia. And then there is the Howie tip jar.
Really, I want to thank you, and Jane, and Christie for setting these Saturday rallies up. By ourselves, fighting the rethuglicans seems hopeless…but working together is empowering.
Colleen, here is a sugestion. In addition to handing out information at parades and such, have volunteers hand out information at local malls, grocery store areas, ect… The back to school crowd will be needing to get supplies soon and everyone goes to the store once or more a week. I handed out info by walking around the parking lot, thereby, the store did not ban me.
I too caught up on my contributions this time around — I threw a little extra to Laesch coz he’s cute — no! they weren’t dollar bills!
Coleen Rowley…
It pleases me to know you have been in the company of Cindy Sheehan. I did not know that. Some would say that associating with Sheehan is not smart. Not only is it smart, it’s principled. May I say thankyou? Cindy Sheehan has character and is a person for the times. As are you, it seems.
wow- THANK YOU FOR RUNNING!!
I threw what I could into the pot!
Coleen Rowley @ 87:
Would somebody care to expand upon this sentiment? Is this some sort of sub rosa punishment being dealt out by a partisan branch of government to American people of faith who evince a political stance not in lockstep with the current group of madcap zanies bent on world destruction for fun, profit, and redemption?
And if so, how can this be tracked and (for lack of a softer word) exploited? I sense the potential for maximum blowback if this phenomena is proven to exist and spotlit appropriately.
OfT: But I wonder what Putin thought of W’s “Just wait” after Putin responded to Bush:
http://thinkprogress.org/2006/07/15/putin-jab/
“Just wait” as in, just wait until Iraq has a better democracy than yours?
Or “just wait” as in, just wait until the USA imposes democracy on Russia like we did in Iraq?
Please no more unscripted events for the Prez overseas. No events at all would be best, actually….
ifthethunderdontgetya, thanks for the sentiments. Jane, Christy, Pach and I have some awesome stuff we’re working on that you– and everyone else you is excited about real grassroots action– will really love. For one thing, when we had Larry Kissell here a few weeks ago, an internationally famous band based in NC was here at FDL and they’ve come up with a KILLER campaign theme for Kissell and Coleen and Rick and the other Blue America candidates. They’re finishing that up now but the demo sounds amazing. I want to get the songs all over the net and see if we can help some of our candidates get radio spots up too. I’m hoping we’ll have something to play you in a week or two.
… yeah, *, that foto on John’s website in the Jeep is pretty rockin’ shithot.
about leafletting etc at parking lots and so forth — do it! at the most they’ll send a rentacop over and ask you to stop. It’d look real bad for the store having somebody arrested for election campaigning…
you always have the right to leaflet on a publically-owned sidewalk but you can be prohibited on private property. Much public space like malls are now privately-owned and this inhibits democratic assembly and free-speech.
Late :( Howie – you bring the best. I’m sure all your candidates already know this, but one great thing a recurring series like this on a blog like FDL is that it’s like we have a ready-made TIVO that we don’t have to program. We may not be here for the thread when it happens, but we’ll go back later and read it and respond to it.
Best of luck Colleen. You’re on the side of the angels. I have some relatives in MN and I’ll have to see if I can motivate any of them on the volunteer front.
The thought of having some people like you, and each of the candidates Howie has highlighted, so that Russ Feingold and Murtha are not the only people tough enough to take a stand – it’s heartening.
God bless.
Oops, I almost for got to tell you– be sure to listen to “Politically Direct” on Air America this weekend. That Brooklyn accent you’ll hear talking with host David Bender is… me! Howard Dean brought David over to my house a couple years ago when Howard was in the single digits for the 2004 presidential sweepstakes. His sincere, people-oriented vision for America made me a convert on the spot. And he told me I could trust David. He was right about that too. Tonight at 7PM (West Coast/10PM Brooklyn time) and 11AM (West Coast/2PM in Brooklyn) on Sunday David and I are going to talk about George Bush’s and Ann Coulter’s favorite Democrat, the execrable Joe Lieberman, and handicap a couple of other races around the country. Maybe I can even work in a gratuitous slam of Rahm Emanuel.
David’s other guest is John Dean.
about churches being ‘gunshy’ about politics — it’s coz those churches are ignorant and uncomfortable. Coleen or any candidate might indeed cost a church its tax-free-status by giving an “elect-me-campaign-speech”. Nothing prohibits a church from having Coleen speak from the pulpit about how her faith guides her principles in this modern world. Just dont ever say: Elect Me! African-American churches in particular expect candidates to come by and speechify…
I had no problems and the majority of people were very nice when I approached them, often as they were heading back to their car with their shopping carts. I understand that some malls will let you set up tables.
I let people know I was doing this because I was a concerned citizen – it was personally motivated. People were more open when I let them know this.
D’oh! Didn’t realize Coleen was on this Saturday, and missed her completely.
Go Coleen! Went to the Act Blue Site and couldn’t just give to Coleen. So I made a contribution to all of them. And I feel better for it. And my card did groan also. Thanks Howie.
I know Howie K is probably gone, but as I am catching this thread up this statement caught my eye:
For one thing, when we had Larry Kissell here a few weeks ago, an internationally famous band based in NC was here at FDL and they’ve come up with a KILLER campaign theme for Kissell and Coleen and Rick and the other Blue America candidates.
Does anyone know – is this going to be a single campaign theme song for the cross segment? I think that would be very cool. It is hard to stay up on things and anymore, the fact that someone is running as “a Democrat” means nada. Having ways (I loved the Fighting Dems concept too and hope to see it sustained) of identifying candidates that people have checked out against some progressive standards is a nice “marker”
Fudge, I was late to the party too!. I missed the chat but sent some love via ActBlue. I always look to Minnesota to provide some good liberal and progressive leadership in Congress and Coleen is just what the spirit of Wellstone ordered. Go get them lady!
Darkblack and *ilson — After that church in Southern California got investigated by the IRS because the minister — not even a candidate — gave an antiwar sermon which allegedly indirectly endorsed John Kerry, a lot of churches are nervous. Of course, the Service doesn’t usually go after megachurches hosting DeLay or Frist, or Catholic churches bashing pro-choice candidates. The fact is, though, that the Service could actually revoke tax exempt status under some circumstances. http://www.commondreams.org/pr…..33199b.htm
In any event, these investigations have a chilling effect. I assume that’s precisely what they are intended to do, although of course the Service denies it. http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb…..02_03.html
Jane,
I understand why this might not the forum for discussing what the FBI is doing to sabotage Colleen’s campaign, but this is an important topic, it seems to me. Does anyone know what they are doing?
Shoutout – Hi Shoephone!!
HufNpuf — They are all excellent candidates, but actually you can donate to just one of them if you want to. Click the right side button, fill in the amount, and then you can select one candidate from the list. The page will then come up with everyone else getting “0″ and your candidate getting whatever you gave. Too late for this time, but heck, this is a continuing series. Oh, and everybody, please remember to tip ActBlue.
Mary (#131)- it’s one campaign theme (3 minute song) with one minute personalized web jingles for each candidate and 30 second personalized radio spots. Each campaign is telling us how they want to modify the lyrics for their campaign.
Darkblack at 120
–thats becoming common practice, churches that involve themselves in politics on a variety of issues have been threatened with a loss of tax-exempt status.
I know of churches (I have a brother that is a priest) who related to me that his diocese had been threatened with loss of tax exempt status for speaking out against same-sex marriage.
It has been cutting both ways, but seems very wrong, symptomatic of a general thuggish approach to politics and social issues.
Yeaaa! Coleen!
Formally of CD 7 here. Collin Peterson DFL was my rep.
Coleen/David what you said @ 50 about USAPA was right on the money – most of it was what they wanted to put in the Anti-Terrorism Act of 1996 but that most of the Dems wouldn’t stand for. And you’re right about USAPA just piling more “hay on the pile” – because it was a structural problem (appointed bureaucracy – office politics and ego) more than not enough information or a lack of effort by the agents.
You guys warned them and they didn’t listen
Thanks Coleen
That Colleen Rowley is running for Congress appears to be one of the best kept secrets of this campaign, if peoples’ reaction here is any indication. Thanks, Howie, for brining her to our attention.
Thank you all for attempting to clarify an obviously indistinct issue (penalizing churches with loss of tax-exempt status for ‘political’ activities).
I wonder what, if any dividing line between (for the purposes of discussion) ‘progressive’ and ‘conservative’ efforts exists in this matter…for example, who initiates what, the rationale used for executing the threat and what the process and outcomes are.
Since Church and State appear to be on a path to inexorable entwining, such knowledge may prove to be a lever or a sword.
Perhaps Peterr could consider that as a future topic, or not, as time and planetary waves permit.
Myself, I’ll stick to my meager comic relief.

A letter in Mpls Trib thursday talked of the ratings the Disabled American Veterans give to our legislators based on their support for vet issues. For 2005 John Kline got 0 which is interesting considering his son is a Black Hawk helicopter pilot & has done a few turns in Iraq. I wonder how he reconciles that. Ratings for some of our other MN morons: Reps Mark Kennedy 20, Ramstad 20, Gutkecht 20 & Sen Coleman 50. (btw the 4 dems listed were: 1 @ 92, 3 @ 100!). These repubs need to go along with Sen Bachmann, boy, is she out in lala land & Sec of State Kiffmeyer who has been quite busy in her career of messing with our election process. Re 2004: she wanted to put up warning posters in polling places about suspicious looking people (ha, the only suspicious looking people at polling places were republican so-called monitors!) and tried to make it difficult for native americans to vote. Today she is pushing voting machines everywhere in MN & local small township officials attending meetings on this say they are told you will get them & that’s that.
MN has been a great state to live, raise & educate your kids in, progressive & a model for other states. It just burns my butt that these gnomes under the bridge are doing their darndest to destroy this state.
Watching the shameful clip of Bush brushing aside questions on the mideast crisis to talk of eating pig made me think of the time our gov Pawlenty took a trip to Iraq & wore a SPAM tshirt there. (Spam being the made in Minn mystery pork product, not the spam of the Steven’s toobz kind.)
“meager:” HAH!
Howie—thanks for featuring another great candidate, although the weekly hits to my credit card are starting to add up.
Gotta give you props for creating a pretty clever opt-out plan…we pay more for you to save on postage. At least the candidate gets the extra cent.
Looking forward to hearing some great music from a NC based band.

Klein’s 2002 campaign centered mostly on his carrying of the nuclear football. What a great military man, getting a zero score on vet issues. He’s actually a carpetbagger GOP candidate who moved to the state just to run for office.
during this Mid-East imbroglio, let it never be forgotten that Israel is the only nuclear power in the region with approximately 200 nuclear weapons …
See, Teddy…Made you laugh, meagerly.
It’s a gift

new thread — your daily Ned !
I wish Coleen’s work, grass roots or otherwise was a little more visible. She seems to be overlooked in coverage of races in her home state. Much more attention is paid to the race between Klien’s soul mate Michaele Bachman and child advocate Patty Wedderling. It is as if Rowleys race has been all but given up…but perhaps we have all been missing something growing quietly underfoot.
Let’s hope, if the campaign is being kept covered, that things like the ad and the LTE and an afternoon stint at FDL help pull it out.
Thanks for the answer Howie – I think that is a great concept.
Howie, the link to the League of Conservation Voters’ ad is not valid…at least I can’t reach it from my computer.
Even with Emanuel and the DCCC incumbent-protection racket frightened of her clear, proud progressive approach to issues
I love Coleen, you love Coleen, I just don’t understand the resort to kneecapping other Democrats who may love our heros somewhat less than we do…
Here’s my mouth, there’s my money. Go, Coleen.
Coleen,
You are a great leader. All the best in your Congressional race!
A Friend from (Northern) Virginia
I live in Coleen’s district and I can tell you the people here are not represented by Kline’s voting record. He is a lock-step repug, and there is a very diverse population out here. So a little push from the blogosphere is really what she needs to make some noise and challenge this guy. I encourage all of you to mention this candidacy to other well known blogs and send her $5.00 even if you can. She is the real deal, and she deserves national attention.
I had no idea Colleen was running even though I read the blogs on a regular basis. Thanks FDL for having her here. I went over to ActBlue and contributed to her campaign and left a tip. Keep up the good fight, Colleen.
