This is just a repeat of Jacob Javits - a very popular Senator - losing the Republican primary in 1980 in NY to Al D’Amato. Javits thought his general popularity would get him enough cross over votes to win, but the democrats voted for the democrat, and the republicans voted for the guy they voted for in the primary.
