I suppose it is quite plausible that anyone could be late for their train. Anyone at all.
Even Joe Biden.
(Although, as Atrios notes, there is a train from Wilmington to Stamford about every 45 minutes. Curiouser and curiouser…)
UPDATE: My Left Nutmeg has much more on the Biden no show.
I was at the Lieberman event, and the offical explanation for Biden’s absence, as offered by Lieberman, was that Biden was just back from Iraq and couldn’t make the train.
Checking the Amtrak schedule, I see an Acela Express leaving Wilmington at 8:18 AM, arr Stamford 10:46, which would be cutting it close, but whatever.
The earlier train left at 6:28.
Lieberman mentioned that his son and Biden’s son went to law school together, the two are friends, Biden is a great American, and they hope to reschedule, but no date was mentioned….
And, of course, I can see how Biden would be late getting back from Iraq on Saturday and all…

Ned-Rootz!
TRAIN SPOTTING.
Hee HAWWWWWWWWWWWWWW Biden
Way to go Mr. Biden! You did good!
Got on wrong train…blinded by his teeth
“Stamford” or “Stepford” make sense to me – is “Stemford” just a typo?
Ah, geez, I misspelled the word I was asking about – “Stempford.” It’s Monday, all right!
78% – of CT responders would rather have Lamont than Lieberman! hah
Maybe someone should poll Diebold workers…
Tigin is not far from the Stamford station, either. There’s lots o’ options for transport into “the city that works” other than Amtrak.
hilarious.
He had just whitened his teeth and couldn’t do a thing with ‘em.
So if Biden missed his train, couldn’t he have shown up late, or were there so few people that everyone was gone in half an hour? (And would anyone want to vote for a candidate who can’t even catch a scheduled train?)
Kobe had the trots this morning and I had some blogs stuff to handle so I couldn’t go to the Biden event at the last minute, but I’m hearing it was a complete bomb, nobody was there except the LieberYouth and Joe was terrified to face the crowd. He snuck in the back door.
Meanwhile Ned is doing four events a day out in public, extremely accessible for anyone who wants to go talk to him.
The Holy Joe Cut-and-Run juggernaut continues. Congrats to DeanFan84 and Neal who drove all the way to Stamford to be the Biden Welcome Wagon Committee.
Damn trains.
Why did Joe Biden miss his train
1) Didn’t have his daily “Big Gulp” coffee from 7-Eleven 34%
2) Stumping for Lieberman might pose a problem for Biden’s Presidential goals in 2008 61%
3) Honest mistake 5%
202 votes so far. POLL HERE: http://connecticutblog.blogspo…..train.html
EPU’d from a previous thread. You guys are going too fast for me, this Monday morning!
* * *
Slightly off-topic, but did anyone else hear David Brooks avow that Lindsey Graham is a “judge” in the naval reserve?
Doesn’t Judge Advocate General just mean he’s a lawyer in the military?
Does this mean I’m smarter than David Brooks?
Egad, Lieberman’s campaign is one for the textbooks on “how not to.” Pathetic. Cannot even keep establishment endorsements steady a month out from a primary.
On an entirely different note, I think a thread on the state of Iraq is pertinent. The violence there seems to have achieved yet another high in intensity and insanity. The reports of drills being used for torture reminds me of stories about the killing fields in Cambodia. The situation seems to be sliding ever faster into Dante-like horror.
BWAAAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Biden is such a loser. I hope when Boxer comes to Conn. there are legions of Women their to tell her she doesn’t have the facts about Holy Joe and his support for Womens rights etc. I hear from friends in NY they plan on going there to rally when she goes to let her know, that there ARE consequenses to her actions. She better be arnmed with the facts and not show up and spew Holy Joe talking points or she will get back what she gave to CondiLiar in spades.
I just can’t imagine how Joe Biden would miss an opportunity to hoist a cold one at an honest to goodness Irish Pub …
unless Lieberlager is now toxic.
mwahahahaha.
Anne — it was a typo. ooops!
REAL Democrats don’t want to go hear Biden talk his crap anyway!
Repost from last post, hit the post?
Off Topeka… but here is the trancript of
Bush’s Chicago press conference, re: Fitz.
Disregard if it has been posted before…
The Prez is really fast on his feet, heh?
Q Thank you very much. Mr. President, the work of U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald in prosecuting alleged corruption is well-known herein Chicago, as well as nationally. It’s my understanding that technically, he hasn’t been reappointed to his position, and serves at
your pleasure. Do you have any plans to formally reappoint him to the post, or any position at Department of Justice?
THE PRESIDENT: As a special prosecutor?
Q And would you give us your assessment of the job that he’s doing?
THE PRESIDENT: I don’t have any plans to reappoint him because I haven’t thought about it. I will now think about it, now that you
brought it up. The only — I can give you an assessment of how I thought he handled the case in Washington. I haven’t been following the cases here. I thought in Washington he handled the case with professionalism, he was very professional about it. You didn’t see a lot leaks, you didn’t see a lot of speculation, you didn’t see a lot of people kind of dropping a little crumb here for the press to chew on. And I really thought he handled himself well. But as far as reappointing him as a special prosecutor, I don’t know whether the Attorney General is going to do that, or not. That’s his choice to make.
Bay State Librul
one more time -
just how much is Ned paying the Lieberman consultants ?
and your little dog, too …
JAG’s are the top lawyers in each armed service. Dunno if the Coasties have a JAG, but I’d be a bit surprised if they didn’t.
Courts Martial work rather differently than civil courts, and JAGs are somewhat different than the Chief Counsel of a civilian government department (e.g., HHS has a Chief Counsel who heads the legal department.)
BC
Maybe Biden snuck off the train at Penn Station. Time for a Biden Fugitive poster!
Or maybe one of his aides gave him bad advice and he tried an Amtrak pizza. We may never hear from him again.
Anne 6: Stamford Stepford = Stempford?
Actually, a big scene in the original Stepford Wives was filmed in Darien, the next town west on 95, in the aptly named Goodwives Shopping Center. Named for the bordering Goodwives River (more of a brook really), but oddly appropriate.
Raw story has a developing story that Snow job and Helen Thomas got into it at the presser today.
I hope Helen got him good.
LOL
Maybe Joe had the trots, too…makes train travel potentially pretty..um..embarrassing.
But Kobe has better hair…and probably, teeth.
*G*
(Hope Kobe’s tummy is feeling better!)
Anne#27…LMAO!
It’s about 3 hours from Wilmington to Stamford, and Biden “missed his train”. Seems like he didn’t really want to be there, or there would have been better planning. Are we to believe Biden was intending to travel for six hours just to spend a couple of hours in a bar for Lieberman? If this were serious he’d be staying overnight or would have planned to fly.
Why do I imagine Biden talking to Joe like that Kids in the Hall character: “Slipped my mind. But I feel awful about it…”
and since there are no ROADS between Stamford and Wilmington, Biden just couldn’t make it
no if Boxer can be convinced to miss the loserman bus too …
Joe Biden that is…
Countertenor: 23
So Brooks IS an idiot for saying Huckleberry is a judge in the naval reserve. :)
(I LOVE your name!0
Franco — Nobody really gave fuck-all about Biden, folks were just showing up for fun. People are seriously pissed about Boxer. I would expect to see a very large organized response to her visit.
Kobe better be gobbling Imodium that day because I won’t miss it for anything.
OT– there is a great discussion wrt torture over at wapo with Stephen Miles, MD.

Thank you for posting that. I have had my antennae up ever since I heard shrub was going to Chicago, on his birthday, to have lunch with Daley, while the jury was deliberating the Daley City Hall hiring scandal case.
Somewhere I read that Daley was told of the guilty verdict WHILE eating with arbusto.
I think it was meant to be another one of those (cue the JAws shark attck music) threantening situations meant to intimidate ole’ Fitz.
Thing is, it probaby went right over his head. So, bush got himself a photo op with Daley just as Daly’s admisn was being ajudged corrupt, all for nothing.
Irony, I do so love irony.
Little Dog Too 15 – if you’re conscious you’re smarter than Bobo.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve taken that train too.
Big plus if you pull an afternoon run, they have a bar car…..
so which Joe is the Stamford Wife?

Both Joes have missed the boat.
Yikes! Echoing your little dog: You guys are going too fast for me, this Monday morning!
Was thinking about Kyl and Graham–esp. Graham–while I was running errands this morning, and these thoughts stuck with me [sorry if I’m redundant, but that suits the ol’ stay on message….repeat, repeat, repeat….]
These guys must think they’re channeling Jack Nicholsen and “you can’t handle the truth…” so they must bear false witness. Their speech may be protected, but that doesn’t make their tactics any less reprehensible. Accountability, ethics, “at long last Senator, have you no shame” all work for me!
And we should be pressing the ones who can hold them accountable for “conduct unbecoming.” Their fellow Senators who should speak out [Biden & LIE-berman, anyone?], the chain of command, their state bar associations, and, yes, the media who have a perfect opportunity here to show THEY have spines of their own.
Now back to your regularly scheduled “oopsie” programming.
Christy and Jane, you are hot, hot, hot!
You know, it’s the height of stupidity and ignorance that our august senators have taken to referring to the Attorney General as “general”. It’s not a rank, it’s an adjective. God does that irritate me.
Prairie at 43 — It’s just one of those Mondays…and there’s lots more to come…

I’m sure you know this, but after Kobe’s torsion last month, you should watch him closely any time anything is different in his nether regions.
I imagine they tacked his stomach, but that is not a sure thing, preventatively.
Not trying to alarm you, and I know you are a the BEST mommy, but with my own brood, I have to err on the side of neurotically attentive.
If only they could talk.
BTW, do you have a torsion kit? Primarily a long section of aquariam tubing.
Jane#33…..I give my Sergei 1/2 of an antacid tablet with the immodium. The Vet told me it helps the doggies body absorb the immodium quicker and makes it more effective. I have done it and it works. My little guy gets this problem every other week. We are so glad you are there to let us know what is going on. THANKS
So, bush got himself a photo op with Daley just as Daly’s admisn was being ajudged corrupt
This seems like rather maladroit imagesmithing…
Kinda OT, but can’t stop mulling over Mary’s excellent post re GOTV. Looks like ACORN is trying to get out the vote in a number of states by ballot measures to increase the minimum wage (by state, rather than waiting for legislation to pass at the federal level). Will putting the minimum wage issue on the November ballot GOTV that we’re looking for? Seems like a good start to me.
Boxer’s staffer couldn’t explain why Boxer endorsed loserman
I just called, and the staffer claimed that stafferes couldn’t answer “political” questions
Boxer is hiding behind a technicallity
time to find another candidate for California’s junior Senator
“Does this mean I’m smarter than David Brooks?”
Hell’s bells, little dog, even this guy is smarter than Bobo Brooks (gots sharper claws too). The video has an unexpected storyline.
My Biden (doesn’t) take the morning train…
and your little dog, too 45 — no I don’t have a torsion kit. Where would I find one?
All the dogs have had the trots for the past few days, I had to switch their dry food because I couldn’t get Organix here (had to go with Newman’s Own organic). I mixed what I had of the Organinix for a couple of days with the new food but I think it’s just a switch issue. I didn’t want to leave Kobe and have him suffering because he couldn’t get outside for a long time, though.
Darblack 39

Maxine?
Franco 46 — good tip. I will do that, thanks much.
I’m so far behind on comments – too busy this morning. But from the Santorum thread
The Quinnipiac poll found that more than 40 percent of those who said they would vote for Mr. Casey said it was primarily a vote against Mr. Santorum.
Isn’t this something that appalls the DLC, and Biden, and Lieberman, and Brazile, and .. .
That “one issue” thing of voting against someone you feel has been a failure in representing your interests?
Surely Casey is going to go public with a statement that he really doesn’t want those “one issue” votes from people who are just negative on Casey.
Right?
Am I starting to understand DLC/DSCC politics yet?

I don’t know anything about you, but the answer is yes
freepatriot at 49 — well, technically, the staffer in Boxer’s office is correct, they aren’t supposed to talk about campaigning issues. But they can take messages from people who call in about campaign issues. And they can also give you the name and phone number of a person with whom you can speak about campaign issues who can answer your questions. ;-)
franco 26
helen thomas deserves our thanks and support. she is a sane voice in this upside down country.
give ‘em hell, helen!

Whew! A-DORable picture, BTW.
Mary,
You take votes where and how you can get them. But voting against Santorum doesn’t bode well for Casey’s long-term viability.
Although that ignores the value of incumbency in a campaign.
BC
puppethead 29, Nice call on the KITH reference.
for Boxers taxpayer-funded Senatorial office worker to explain Boxers political endorsements would be quite illegal. Do you want Santorums office staff working on your dime on his reelection campaign? Senatorial staff must be outside of election politics.
looseheadprop, have you seen this op-ed?

Good luck birthin’ them lablets, lhp!
Christy, consider it this way
Boxer endorsed loserman AS MY SENATOR, that makes it my business
if the staffer can’t talk about it because it’s a political issue, then my Senator SHOULD HAVE KEPT HER MOUTH SHUT
Boxer chose to endorse loserman as a SENATOR, she should explain her actions AS A SENATOR
donm’t go and do something and then claim you can’t speak about it because of a technicallity, that pisses me off
if you’re willing to endorse somebody, you better be ready to explain why
I tend to get a little bit rude at times (by my own measurement), and some poor staffer just experienced that phenomenon, so I know that I’ll be remembered
I think it’s funny that people keep telling me “there’s no need to be rude”
right after I get “Rude”, I seem to get results. I got kinda rude at the lumber store last week. 5 minutes later they found the order that they swore for a half hour that they didn’t have
no need to be rude ???
I was rude, and you found my shit
seems to me that there WAS A NEED to be rude
don’t try this at home kids, I’m a trained idiot

You can put together your own bloat kit (not torsion kit, duh.)
This website will tell you how:

IOYIKADINO.
Jane – re: torsion kit –
It’s my understanding that one of the things the vet will do if symptoms of torsion are present is to try to pass a length of tubing into the alimentary canal and into the stomach to see if gas pressure can be released that way. How one would know one was in the right place – in the stomach/not in the stomach – is the part I would feel hinky about.
I would also guess that unless one has some expertise with the procedure, it would carry some risk of puncture.
I think if it were me, I would find out the location and telephone number of the nearest 24 hr emergency vet, and how to get there, just in case.
Hope for Kobe’s sake and yours that he’s just having diet issues…
What cracks me up is that Bush didn’t know what the reporter was talking about when asked if he’d reappoint Fitzgerald. The term of a US Atty is 3 (or 4?) years, and Fitz has been in Chicago since Sept. 2001. Bush answered as if he had a choice to reappoint him as Special Prosecutor in the CIA leak case.
Those are two different animals.
Anne 27 LOL
and your little dog – the military’s courts martial proceedings are different than regular courts. I don’t know much about them at all, but in general they a tiered system where lesser charges get a proceedings where only a military officer might be presiding – not even one who is a lawyer or JAG, on up through a much more formal proceeding for more important crimes that includes a panel of judges who receive appointments from the Judge Advocate General’s office.
Given that Graham is an officer and JAG, I would be very surprised if he hasn’t been appointed by JAG office on its military judges list.
Of course, as I mentioned, for some proceedings it is a matter of officer review without any requirment that the presiding officer have legal training per se.
[Non-sequitor - once upon a time (I don’t know if this is still the case or not) some states did not require that candidates running to be judge be lawyers.]
SO — I would tend to think Brooks is right, even without looking things up.

Mary,
New Mexico doesn’t require magistrate judges be attorneys.
I’m not sure that it’s a statutory requirement for judges above that level, but above the magistrate level judges are appointed by the Gov, then run in a contested election. After that they run for retention.
For the initial appointment you need a bar recommendation, which is tantamount to requiring admission to the bar.

Bargain C – once upon a time, KY didn’t require even a bar recommendation for Circuit Court judges. I don’t know what the rules are now (I should too). -ck- 108-ish I hope you are right — that is what I first thought. Someone on his staff said, if you have any hope of winning theDem primaries for Pres., best not get your picture taken with Lieberman right now.
Which is why Hillary was so smart to come out wit THE most principled position and to do it early: “I will support whoever the democrat voters of Connecticut choose.”
Is that so very hard, Joe? Barbara? Evan? etc.? This is, after all, the Democratic Party, not the pity party — that’s down the hall.
Mary, if you’re still there. . . . About a week ago you did a series of three posts on the history and context leading up to the Hamdan decision. They are extremely helpful in undertanding the decision and must reads. A few threads later you did a couple of posts on “History,” A, B, C, D, etc. I thought of these because they collectively were more helpful and a far better read than the John Dean article — also good, but not as complete — referenced earlier today in “A Matter of Ethics.”
Do you have quick links to these posts, and if so, can I trouble you to leave a link at the end of the “matter of ethics” thread, so that we’ll all be able to find those five or so posts. Thanks much.
By the way, my use of “democrat” in my Hillary quote was attempted snark, but it appeared too subtle after it went up. Sorry….

Jack Walsh,
Earlier today I somewhat disagreed with someone who, in a flattering way, compared Pat Fitz with an Irish boxer. I don’t think I would ever describe Pat as agressive or combative. Just determined and firm.
However, I have NEVER worried that Pat lacked courage. In fact the thing that first struck me about him, many years ago, was hoe very much courage he did have, and how much courage and determination it took for someone as painfully shy as he is, to become a courtroom lawyer.

Thanks for that link.
I’m hearing it was a complete bomb, nobody was there except the LieberYouth and Joe was terrified to face the crowd. He snuck in the back door.
Well, the event was hosted by the Irish-Americans in Connecticut (formed, we were told, to help cheerlead for the Good Friday accords of eight years ago led, on this side of the pond, by Bill Clinton and, IIRC, George Mitchell). Hence the Irish Pub.
I am sure of only one thing – being a reporter is not so easy – but I would guess 40-60 people were there, with the middle aged well-represented (I counted myself twice since to pass as any kind of Dem I need to induce a mild schizophrenic state…).
Lieberman did in fact come in the back door, and it was planned to avoid any surprises out front, but I never saw anything that could pass as a “crowd” of non-supporters actually gather.
But a caveat – for a good chunk of the time I was inside some Irish pub with frosted glass windows, so to scan for excitement outside I had to tippy-toe to peek through the regular windows, and I rarely deign to do that in pubs of any type. My nose for news was pressed against the glass but I could only make out hairstyles and disembodied heads on the sidewalk. Kinda weird; where was Hunter S. Thompson when I needed him?
As to the event being a “bomb” – who knows? There were several media outlets (WCBS 880 radio, CH 8 CT News, NY Times, that I saw). Lieberman spoke a bit, so maybe a news station got a useful soundbite (but for my money, he did not deliver soundbites well; I did not see any staffers tearing out their hair, but the campaign guy was already balding).
Possible news – Lieberman was asked about Bill Clinton coming to campaign for him – Clinton worked on the first Lieberman campaign in 1970, and Joe was the first non-AR Senator to endorse Bill in ‘91 (we were told), so who knows? Anyway, Lieberman did not announce a date by any means, but he did not rule it out (why would he?)
For myself, the event was a bomb because Jane missed it (goes without saying, but I said it).
I did meet Ed Anderson, who was very calm and cogent chatting with Mark Leibovich of the NY Times outside after Lieberman left. Ed apparently blogs at My Left Nutmeg as TrueBlueCT (IIRC, and sic?). Leibovich recently did the Kennedy/Ohio story, works in the Times Washington Bureau, and is in CT doing a piece on Lieberman. I did not infer from the Kennedy story that he is a fan of lefty blogs, but mileage may vary.
Other tidbit – Joe announced that John Lewis had more or less endorsed Lieberman up in Hartford; take that, Maxine. I have not researched that.
I may have an opportunity to attend other Lieberman events, and I guess I ought to check Lamont’s schedule, too.
And a bit of local lore – the Goodwives River opens into a useful cove which was once an active fishing port. Back when fishing captains built homes on the river, they would sail away for months at a time and the good wives would stay behind. No news on the activities of the not-so-good wives. So there you go – amaze the natives.
Any thoughts on why Hillary gave Lanny Davis the green light to go after Ned on Washington Journal yesterday?
O/T but wanted to get this out, incase you all had not seen this news report (the murdered man’s brother in London is a friend of mine. Naturally, it’s made front page in the evening papers (Evening Standard).
Campaigner knifed to death in US
A political campaigner from north London, tipped for a glittering career, has been stabbed to death in the US.
Police said Alan Senitt, 27, was trying to protect his female companion when they were targeted by armed robbers as they walked home in Washington DC.
The former chairman of the Union of Jewish Students (UJS), from Pinner, had moved to the US to work on Democrat Mark Warner’s presidential campaign.
Two men, a youth and a woman have been charged with murder.

Scarecrow – if you’re still around, I think I can find the last three, more organized posts, so I’ll do that. They hit a lot of stuff other than the Graham Kyl mess, but I’ll link them there.
darkblack – as well it should not. *g* BTW, in case no one has mentioned it the last hour or so, you are an absolute genius db.
JayinVT – that is a horribly sad story. I’m sure the woman he was with and his family are beyond horrified and traumatized. Condolences for your friend – their brother sounds like a very special person.
scarecrow – Mary’s Hamdan posts can be found here , here, here, here, and here.
Note: These links are to the first instance I could find of Mary’s brilliance in each of those threads.
(And moderator, I’ve never attempted so many embedded links before, so if this gets stuck, I’m sorry for the extra work. Will click all the ads twice today ;-)
lhp, are you here now?
Re: lindsey graham
I think Dark Black hit it at 126 above. He is a military judge in the Reserves. Within the military legal system that is kind of a term of art- all military attorney are “Judge Advocates,” but some (O6 and up) get appointed as “military judges” – they preside at courts-martial and things like that.
How is it that an appearance by Joe Biden would help any candidate. This guy loves to hear himself talk and talk and talk. Not that this is unusual among political types, but he just seems so ineffective. (Except for MBNA) Heck I still have not gotten over the Clarence Thomas hearings back when Joe the Hair Plug chaired the Judiciary Committee. Now that was a disaster.
Don’t worry all, I am on my way to ct. on the 25th of july, to knock out the remaining 12 people who still are backing the lieberman. My dad still lives in orange, where I grew up, and I will be rounding up as many mishpucka as I can to get to the polls on the 8th, even if I have to buy all of them pizza at sallys, or corned beef sandwiches at that deli in amityville, which I forget the name. See you then, give em hell ned!
Hmmm, 163 miles sounds like a little over an hour on a chopper-I guess the Capital One chopper was busy?
