By now you’re surely aware that a liberal blogger, one Debra Frisch — whom no one had ever heard of previously — wrote some very very very nasty things about Jeff Goldstein’s kid.
I hereby condemn her, for what wrote is so uncouth, so nasty, so fucking demented that it puts her on the same moral plane as …well, Jeff Goldstein and his commenters — obviously the scum of humanity.
She’s plainly broken from the dynamic Andrew described where we lefties do not sink to the wingnuts’ level of depravity (though it’d also be nice if we didn’t "rise" to the level of pecksniff, stupid, Kleiman-esque rhetorical suicide, whereby we so arrogantly think we can reason with the evil and insane that we end-up legitimizing the evil and insane). We’re supposed to have restraint. And of course, we do; this blogger was an unknown where in contrast the most famous of online wingnuts daily prove their congenital indecency.
Yet even as her actual comments were every bit as bad as Goldstein’s and his commenters, this blogger at least had the decency to resign from her job. It doesn’t excuse, much less redeem anything on her part, but it is a damn sight better than what Goldstein and his commenters have done when they:
- Outted anonymous liberal bloggers.
- Threatened liberal commenters and bloggers with sexual assault and violence.
- Engaged in Charles Whitman sniper fantasies against "trolls".
- Openly mused about beating YearlyKos attendees with axe handles.
- Made sexual remarks about a couple of liberal bloggers’ one-year-old child.
- Spewed the obligatory fag-liberal commentary.
because what Klonapin-addled Goldstein and his militia of violent jackasses did then was blame the victims, whine about the cruelty of anonymous/pseudonymous liberals and — well, the unemployable can’t really quit their jobs, can they?
But this isn’t about Goldstein and his commenters who are as violent and crazy as they are paste-devouringly stupid. That’s old news. No, this is about the wingnut horde which has collectively put on its Hockey Mask of Decency and Rectitude to disguise the Hannibal Lector within.
Gavin and TBOGG have said already what needs to be said here with regard to the Confederate Yankee, a moralist-of-convenience who thoughtfully plucked his banjo and uncrossed his eyes before condemning the whole Leftosphere for not condemning this blogger we didn’t know about.
Fine, she’s condemned. Now unless Mr. Slack-Jawed Hayseed wants to be consistent and condemn and de-link Goldstein for his equal transgressions against human decency, he should have a tall glass of STFU and go back to oggling Misty Rowe on old Hee Haw reruns, or whatever the hell it is he does.
Same goes for the Knob from Knoxville, who should be consistent or STFU about this and get back to his first best talent, which is being a particularly weaselly genocide apologist.
And whatever goes for those two goes double for the reprehensible Mike Patterico who can not only drink a double helping of STFU but can fuck himself sideways and inside out for the incredible chutzpah he demonstrates in the linked posts. Let me explain. When I documented Goldstein’s constant pattern of violent and sexual threats to liberals, Patterico responded that Goldstein was genius! that his threats were so intelligently and humorously crafted that it was fucking literature, man! Like South Park and Beavis & Butthead itssooofunnyomg!!!
That’s right: for Patterico, when a fellow wingnut writes something depraved, it’s art! But if a liberal does it, why it’s proof that the whole Leftosphere is soiled, the victim a saint; and, well, if the guilty liberal should do anything at all, she should donate money to poor Jeff Goldstein!
The idiot has gall.
Anyway, don’t bend to the wingnuts. Ms. Frisch is for us a great exception. But for wingnuts, Goldsteins and Malkins are the rule. Grandstanding asshelmets like CY, Instayokel, Patterico, et al can clean their own augean stable so soiled as it is by the presence of so many truly horrible personages before they presume to tell us to clean a few cobwebs from our otherwise fairly tidy home. We have the moral high ground, we always have and always will, and neither you, dear reader, nor those miserable pukeface wingnuts should ever forget it.
(Editor’s Note: To my eternal shame I actually defended Jeff Goldstein over at Feministe, and it turned out I was wrong and he had in fact violated his Online Integrity Pledge with special dispensation from Pope Tacitus. I hope publishing this guest post by Retardo of Sadly, No! is appropriate penance. — JH)

This is getting a bit scary — when ever speech, even innapropriate speech, is met with threats — it is a bad time. Then for the right, who are the most violent eliminationists to complain that they are threatened (and wear the mantle of victim) something is truly screwed. But this is the place we are friends,

Would be very nice if Talk Left would get around to condemning Goldstein they way they jumpe on Deb Frisch.
I don’t care if Jeralyn or Christopher or or John considers “both Jeff and his wife to be friends”; that only makes it worse.
Much worse.

“So much for me running around saying that Dems don’t have any Coulters or Malkins.”
I have not heard about this until now, so I have a couple of questions.
1) Has Debra Frisch been positively identified as a Democrat? (I don’t know, just asking).
2) Can it fairly be said that Democrats, or people of the left, have supported her efforts the way the Right supports Coulter and Malkin?
(the only commentary I have seen from either side seems to be condemning her).

Who is this Frisch chick? I’d never heard of her in my life until this past weekend (granted, I don’t spend time hanging out in Goldstein’s comments section for fun or anything…). How is it, exactly, that a blogger that no one had ever heard of before is suddenly representative of anything beyond her own, personal actions? Good heavens, has the right wing luminary division become so desperate to change the subject that THIS is the best they could do? Jeebus, who doesn’t condemn threats to children. Hello?!?!?!
And who the hell threatens a child? I don’t give a crap whose side of the political fence you are on, children are off limits. Period. That includes liberals and conservatives alike. That it has to be said at all is pathetic.
neuro: As far as I can tell, none of the lefty bloggers I know had ever heard of her until the outrage machine kicked up over her vile comments.
They should see the stuff we moderate out when LGF comes to visit, but I digress.
Goldstein is a sick twit, and so are his commenters. That they wish to suggest one of their commenters who shoots from the left is actually one of us, or that we are somehow responsible for her, is nuts.
Did we ever quote from or link to her blog? No? What kind of linkage and traffic do Malkin and Goldstein get from the wingnutosphere?
I thought so.

I haven’t read what this woman said about Goldstein. I don’t know if she made actual threats. I did just read what this prof said about her “cyberstalking” him, though:
Deborah Frisch continues stalking my site, sending trackbacks to multiple posts to link to ad hominem attacks. While I appreciate the boost to my TTLB Ecosystem link score, I’m not giving the [rhymes with witch] access to my site. Hence, she is the first and only person whose trackbacks I am routinely deleting from my site.
Now, I used to have a blog. Not a particularly well-read one, but a blog nonetheless. And there was a person who called himself Goldenboy who regularly showed up and posted nasty comments, calling me a traitor, blah blah. He sometimes wished for me to be harmed.
I never became alarmed. I never felt “threatened” by Goldenboy. I didn’t feel like he was “stalking” me. He was an annoying, nasty turd, and eventually I banned him. No big deal.
That’s what this professor did to Frisch. EZ as pie to do.
Now, many many years ago I did have a stalker. An anonymous male person who called me at all hours, not only at home but when I’d be at work or visiting friends and family, letting me know he knew where I was, what I was wearing, etc.
That was frightening. That was stalking.
This stuff, this posting nasty comments on Internet sites, this isn’t stalking, cyber or otherwise It’s being annoying, or being an asshole or a jerk or whatever.
But if it frightens Goldstein or others, then I have an idea: Get off the fricking Internet. Quit publicizing yourself and inviting people to get pissed at you. Because obviously you can’t take people being pissed. And, really, that’s all it is. It sure as hell isn’t stalking. And if someone makes an actual threat, then call the cops.
EZ as pie.
Is it just me or is the right wing world just filled with suppressed homosexual tendencies?
immanentize — yes, scary, and more than a bit.
Al Qaeda poses no serious military threat to the US, but they attack innocent US civilians because they can. The US has no hope of defeating such a movement through military means, but they attack Islamic countries to prove that we can. Tens of thousands are killed, and it goes on without end or even a strategy for ending it.
The Israelis recognize that their incursion into Gaza won’t end the violence, but they go ahead anyway; the Hamas leadership know they cannot win an armed confrontation, but they go ahead and provoke it anyway. Dozens are killed, and it goes on without end. No one asks, “how does this end?”
The right has no compunction about spewing violent or offensive rhetoric against the left; the left says they care, this is not the way, but in rage some still respond in kind.
Who is calling for an end? How does it end? And what does a civilized human being do?
lisa, you are absolutely correct. I used the word “allegedly” above, but that wasn’t good enough. Sorry.
FWIW, when theres a post involving the issue of race (such as the one about Maxine Waters), it is truly disgusting to observe the trolls put on their pointy-headed white robes and ascend here. I’ve worked in civil-rights for 40 years so it gives me great pleasure to smite the hatemongers.
Well said and it can’t be said often enough.
it turned out I was wrong and he had in fact violated his Online Integrity Pledge with special dispensation from Pope Tacitus.
Tacitus left a comment later in which he said he didn’t, in fact, provide the dispensation, but others begged to differ. And your defense enabled me to correct some errors in my post.
Is it just me or is the right wing world just filled with suppressed homosexual tendencies?
Gay as dammit as far as I can tell.
Hey, don’t blame them on MY people! They come by being sick the old fashioned way.

In all honesty, I’m not sure I “get” Retardo’s post. If he is condeming people for lowering the level of discourse, I think it undercuts the argument to fill his own post with so much ad hominum assault.
If the purpose was to disavow any connection between some deranged woman who wrote posts threatening a baby, I think it would have had much more impact to do so in a calm measured tone.
The shreaking quality of the post dilutes it’s meassage. Such a tone, may be appropriate in some circumstance (none come to mind at the moment), but is counterproductive here.
This is not the quality of writing I have come to expect at FDL. You guys have spoiled me.
I am gonna do something else until a new thread comes up.

Hi all — I’m the guy whose 1-year-old was the recipient of a vile comment; Retardo refers to me & my wife above.
Jane: Don’t feel bad for defending JG at Feministe. The details of what happened to me & my wife are byzantine and tedious, and it’s easy to get lost in one of JG’s convoluted rationalizations for acting like a complete tool.
But yes, JG did “out” us, as even Lord Captain Commander Tacitus Q. Civilitypants concedes, albeit in his usual charming style. Translated from Tackyspeak, he essentially calls JG a liar who violated the Online Integrity pledge, but that’s OK because I called JG bad names.
I had not been previously acquainted with this form of Integrity, the “if you get called names you can do whatever you want and break your publicly given word” version. But it is new and exciting and I can’t imagine why with logic like this behind it the Online Integrity thing has been a less than resounding success.
I apologize for the inside blogball in this post. But since JG has made it somewhat of a hobby to tell lies in liberal comments sections about his decision to out me and my wife, I just want our side of the story presented clearly. Thanks.

I did not mean my prior to paralyze the thread. It’s right to call out violent rhetoric and threats and right to call out offensive blogging that “outs” people and subjects them to threats, as Thers describes at 56. We should all condemn this behavior. I wish such condemnation were enough to stop it, but alas, it doesn’t seem to be enough.

This is one of my peeves! BushCo has George P on deck, even trotted him out in the 2000 George W campaign and talked about how cute he was and all the girls would really go for him, bleah. He disappeared when the Iraq invasion started, what a surprise. God, I hate that family, though I am usually such a sweet and delicate person.

I got some good news from Cdt Countertenor. All the makee-learnee’s who were scheduled for forward sites (i.e., on the DMZ) in Korea have been reassigned to bases a bit further back.
They were also warned that if an outbreak of hostilities was felt imminent they would be evacuated directly to the US on a MAC flight.
Apparently all the forward camps are on highest alert status and they don’t want anyone there who doesn’t need to be there.
It’s nice to know that someone in that pointy building in DC is thinking.

BTW, some articulate, impressive representatives of the blogosphere on the Ed Schultz show today talking about the Lamont race! Go guys!
There is SOooooo much misinformation out there about the blogs. I hope that sooner or later it gets straightened out. But thanks to all that called Ed today.
The HoJo-Lamont race really is a big one. It’s all anyone wants to talk about. There are so many issues involved . . . unlike some, I don’t believe that if Lieberman wins it will prove the blogs are powerless. I think we’ve already proven our point just by forcing an 18-year incumbent to prove to the voters that he deserves the seat.
i haven’t followed paste eater’s latest nonissue very closely, but i’ll say that i really don’t care if people on our side use the harshest language as they engage with the wingnuts; the wingnuts deserve nothing less than assault on all fronts, and sometimes that includes discourse that civil people think is beyond the pale. if the right had been in any way civil over the last six years, i wouldn’t be saying this. but as a great turtledove short story illustrates: if the germans had beaten the british, they would’ve gunned down gandhi in a new york minute.
these are honest to god fascists we’re up aginst, and i’m not going to shed a single tear if someone opposed to them says something extreme. we’re still using words, but i just finished watching “army of god” and i’m here to tell you- they are polishing actual weapons as we speak.
Casey Senior was not allowed to speak at the 1992 Democratic Convention because he wouldnt pledge to support Clinton/Gore but the wingnuts have used the abortion speech issue with him to prove the DhimmyRats to be closet Stalinists …
it could be fatal for so many North Koreans, too. ;(
This entire North Korea situation is another abject failure of this government. Read Snow’s take from Raw Story:
>>>>>>>>>>>>
SNOW: Well, this is not the Clinton administration policy. I understand what the Clinton administration wanted to do. They wanted to talk reason to the government in Pyongyang, and they engaged in bilateral conversations. And Bill Richardson went with flowers and chocolates, and he went with light-water nuclear reactors, and he went with promises of heavy oil, and a basketball signed by Michael Jordan, and many other inducements for the “dear leader” to try to agree not to develop nuclear weapons, and it failed. But there was at least a good-faith effort on the part of some very smart people to use that as an approach.
We’ve learned from that mistake. One reason not to go bilateral with the North Koreans is what we’re seeing right now, which is that you need to have concerted pressure, especially from those who have very close and ongoing ties with the government of North Korea, so that you can get results. So this is not a continuation of the Clinton program.
>>>>>>>>
they have learned nothing.

looseheadprop, I read the link about Fitzgerald that someone had put on for you earlier in the day. I had never read it before, and buried in there, was a point I had never considered before either. We usually picture him–to carry on the image of fighter–as fighting alone AND with one hand tied behind him. This article mentions the likeliness (spelling?)of his having backers. This really intrigues me, and I hope it’s true. The author seemed to favor an idea of some kind of a consortium of liberals, libertarian Republicans etc. I know Gore complimented F. highly in his speech at Constitution Hall. So maybe he has more powerful supporters than we vicious rabid lambs on the blogs think.

angie @ 12:58 pm (#78) – it could be fatal for so many North Koreans, too.
That it could. But by “parties” I meant folks who actually have some control over what happens, which seems to be a group that doesn’t include the North Koreans most likely to die.
Of course, by “Kim Il Song” I actually meant “Kim Jong Il”, so I don’t blame you for missing my point. I’m pretty sure that Kim Il Song isn’t affecting things very much, and he seems to have very little to lose at this point.
Your other point about Snow, et. al., lacking even the ghost of a clue is also right. Clinton did better than BushCo have so far on this issue.

Re: NSA Wiretap Suit
Reuters: “In both cases, the Bush administration has invoked a legal doctrine known as the “state-secrets privilege” that it has used to head off other court action spy programs.”
When the intelligence agencies brief a few selected members of the intelligence committees in Congress, the senators and representatives are told it is against the law for them to talk to others about what they learn.
So we can’t (according to the administration) proceed with legal action, and we can’t even tell the full membership of Congress what the government is doing so they could exercise some oversight, if they even wanted to.
How the hell are the people of the United States supposed to have any oversight or accountability of our intelligence activities? Whatever happened to democracy?
It seems like the courts ought to be able to establish some kind of procedure that would allow the necessary information to be viewed by the judge and/or jury without making it public generally. Otherwise, we will have the executive branch exercising raw, unchecked power. It could act in direct violation of law with no accountability.
Oh, I guess we already have that.
Dr. Frisch is an example of a cheesy rhetorical game the wingnuts like to play. It starts with them mischaracterizing a liberal position, usually through some baffling non sequitur.
For example, if you oppose the war in Iraq, the wingnut will assert that you must not support the troops. If the victim of this game plays along, he has fallen for the trap.
L: I do so support the troops!
W: No you don’t
L: Yes, I do!
W: Do you really support the troops? Let me hear you say it.
L: I support the troops.
W: Louder
L: I support the troops!
W: I can’t heeeaaar you!
L: I SUPPORT THE TROOPS!
At which point the wingnut walks away chuckling.
First, he mischaracterized the liberal point of view. Secondly, he can accuse the liberal of flip-flopping on the issue. Thirdly, he’s made it sound like the liberal agreed with the wingnut all along.
With the collusion of the MSM, wingnuts are often able to use this trick against unsuspecting and naive politicians. Sadly, No!, however, was the wrong place to try it out.
Oh, and only in pony-obsessed wingnuttia (and Zengerleland) is wishing for something (someone’s death) equivalent to trying to make it happen (a death threat).

I’ve already said what I think about this on TalkLeft, as Lettuce noted. As for the suggestion that she comment over on TalkLeft, please don’t bother. TalkLeft does not allow name-calling or personal attacks in the comments, it would be deleted.
I read more of Frisch’s blog than I cared to before writing about it. She was way out of line and since no one ever heard of her before, it’s unfortunate that her comments are being attributed to the liberal blogosphere in general.
As for giving up her job, she has written that she didn’t really like it in Arizona and had been thinking of staying in Eugene, OR where she owns a house and used to teach. She’s written lots of posts castigating the University of Oregon because she was denied tenure there. She’s sorry she didn’t sue them and she names the faculty she holds responsible for her rejection. It’s highly unlikely she’d return to teaching there.
My “time to move on” update was in reference to her fourth or fifth apology that she posted on Jeff’s site in which she specifically acknowleged being wrong for attacking Jeff’s child. I thought that one sounded genuine.
Hopefully, she has learned from her mistakes.
I don’t read Jeff’s political writings nor have I praised them. I’ve never even discussed politics with him. But I do consider him and his wife friends and I don’t trash my friends.
Rather than belabor the point and spend more time on this controversy, now that it appears to have died down, I’d rather get back to attacking Bush, Lieberman and people that negatively affect all of our lives, rather than on two bloggers that don’t amount to a hill of beans in the grand scheme of things.
I could not find what this Frisch person is alleged to have written, but I do not have a problem with rude comments being made. Threats of violence, however, should never be made to anyone.
TalkLeft is the worst ‘liberal’ blog on the net. Its comments section is the definition of censorship. Before it became a registration site, I had made comments about its censorship and it censored everything I wrote EXCEPT my initial compliments about the quality of its reporting.
(CHS notes — that goes for you, too, TPX. Jeralyn is a friend of mine, and I will not tolerate some sort of TalkLeft bash fest. Period.)
kc — that’s enough. I mean it. Whatever beef anyone has with Goldstein, the right wing or whomever, you will not take it out on Jeralyn. I will not have it.
…and don’t make me close the comments…I’m too freaking busy to police crap today.
Maybe Ms. Frisch looked around, saw how much attention was paid, and credibility doled out to these nut jobs and thought she’d get her fifteen minutes of fame (which I guess was accomplished). Maybe she naively expected accolades from the left. Silly
rabbitwoman,Trixdepravity is for wingnuts.People take crap too seriously.
Uh, please, anyone wishing to support me & my wife because of the JG crap, thanks, but please leave Talk Left out of it. Thanks.
Might I suggest that the leftosphere proclaim August “Ignore Jeff Goldstein Month”? Nothing will hurt that attention whore more than a severe reduction in traffic.
Except, you know, for a DOS attack, which I condemn because I’m human and personally responsible for everything other people do to other people. Especially when the hax0rs do it.
Or something like that.
Ms. Ann Onymous Blogger was totally wrong, but she did later apologize to the paste-eater. If she is indeed sincerely sorry, then perhaps everyone should let this go.
