(You can watch the Lamont/Lieberman debate on CSPAN and on MSNBC. They’ll also be having updates on the Ned Lamont blog.)
6:54: Picked up Matt Stoller at the train station, we’re in the war room. Passed the TV station with LieberYouth waving their signs and looking on the whole a bit Moonie. DeanFan84 and other CT bloggers were also camped outside hoping to catch Joe on the way in. The energy is quite charged….
7:05: Joe wants to make it all about the war and says Ned is running against George Bush. He keeps saying "I’m not George Bush." Does he really want to keep invoking visions of Dan Quayle?
7:06: Ned is coming across geniune and passionate. "Senator Lieberman, if you won’t challenge George Bush and his failed agenda, I will." Booyah!!!
7:07: Hey Joe, how can you ask Democrats to get over the war? Joe quickly finds another quesiton to answer. Joe keeps trying to peddle himself as the man who makes a principled stand, and not one willing to say anything to get himself on Meet the Press. He sounds patronizing and churlish.
7:09: Joe wants Ned to clean up the mess he’s made in Iraq.
7:12: Lieberman: "Ned’s got me confused again." It doesn’t take much. Lieberman says things are "a lot better different" in Iraq. Michael Ware’s words still ring true:
I and some other journalists had lunch with Senator Joe Lieberman the other day and we listened to him talking about Iraq. Either Senator Lieberman is so divorced from reality that he’s completely lost the plot or he knows he’s spinning a line. Because one of my colleagues turned to me in the middle of this lunch and said he’s not talking about any country I’ve ever been to and yet he was talking about Iraq, the very country where we were sitting.
7:17: Ned: George Bush has been bad for the country and bad for the State of Connecticut. "Senator Lieberman is finding too much common ground with the President."
7:18: Joe keeps saying "There you go again." All his tactics are straight out of the GOP playbook. Karl, are you behind the curtain?
7:20: Joe says he’s helped the country achieve energy independence. Is he huffing DeLay’s left over bugspray?
7:22: Nice that Lieberman is being so churlish and antagonistic against Ned. Would’ve been nice if he’d been that tough on Cheney. But Joe is only nasty to other Democrats, I guess.
Joe’s whole game plan is personal attacks on Ned — it’s worked well for the GOP, and it’s your only option if you can’t defend your own record without lying. Joe opposed the privatization of Social Security? Hah.
7:25: Lieberman wouldn’t answer Ned on the "short ride" for rape victims. He said he was endorsed by Planned Parenthood.
Thanks, Planned Parenthood.
7:40: Ned hammered Joe over his support for the energy bill. Joe tries to interrupt him. "This isn’t Fox News, Sir," says Ned. Good on ya, Ned.
7:46: Lieberman keeps talking about how rich Ned is. Ned agreed to a spending cap for this campaign, Holy Joe wouldn’t. He’s raised millions. Who’s the one who wants to burn piles of cash?
7:50: Joe brags about how many earmarks he’s supported. Ned hits him hard by saying if they’re legitimate, they should go through the legislative process. Hey Porkbusters….
7:55: "I want you to vote for your dreams, I want you to vote with your heart." Ned was inspirational. Joe sounded like an entitled, cranky finger-waving scold, the spawn of Karl Rove angry at being subjected to the Democratic process. I know I’m not impartial, but watching it I would’ve walked away thinking Joe was a jerk and that Ned was a good guy worth listening to.

Fitz! we’re watching!
roots!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And by the way ctblogger DID get the ideas we sent over from John Casper.
Open source think tank operates in real time.
Katie was unwilling to vacate the front seat of the car for Matt but eventually she
was pulledmoved into the back seat. We’re here in the war room.GO NED!!!
for those of you on dialup and no cable TV — CSpan streams pure audio too : it’s low bandwidth (it uses teeny tubes)
and the War Room is at the Nedquarters ?
Jane in the “war room”… Would love to witness that!
Ned reminds me of House . . . except handsome.
War on Jane! Thank you for everything you do!!!
CSpan has some pre-debate chitchat going on already
GO NED!!!!!!
Advice to Ned – Don’t hold back on Lieberman.
Don’t try too hard to be Mr. Nice.
Leave the mollycoddling, mewling and meandering chit-chat to HoJo.
Get your war on!
w00t, let’s hope he kicks some WATB ass!
#10, Ditto!
MSNBC has a vote on the winner of the debate.
GAME ON!
Thanks Jane!
EPU’d
I would like to see the debate questioners ask Lamont and Leaverman about the Supreme Court’s recent Hamdan decision, which very sensibly reined in to some degree the Bush administration’s attempt to exercise unlimited executive power.
That decision narrowly addressed the trial procedures for Guantanamo detainees. I would like to hear from Lamont and Leaverman how they feel about the Bush administration’s accross-the-board powergrab, and the failure of the Do-Nothing Rubber Stamp Congress to uphold its responsibilities as a co-equal branch of government. It’s hard for me to picture Leaverman challenging the administration on this any more than he has on a variety of other issues.
This is a very important subject that the public needs to be educated about. Does anybody know what positions the candidates have taken on over-reaching executive power and Congress’s failure to deal with it?
OK! C-Span on, check. Laptop fired up for live blogging, check. Glasses oh crap. brb
I hope it’s a real debate format, not just questions from journalists.
ATTACK ATTACK ATTACK
Cry havoc and let loose the {Fire}dogs of war!
GO NED!!!!!!
gee… ya think the channel is nbc30?
GO NED! Take no prisioners.
A clear choice, Joe? You bet there is.
warble warble warble on ho jo.
Asshole John Harwood on MSNBC with Noron says Hillary running from JL to placate anti-war wing.
They start w Lieb. He sounds stiff. “He is distorting who I am” talking about BUSH
Bentsen? Fucker!
Will Leaverman say “9/11″?
… I’ve kissed George Bush…
Let’s see — daughter in bath with Dad manning the towel…check. C-Span on…check. Computer…check. Dachshund bladder…dang it. Thank goodness for Tivo.
And Joe Lieberman is already whining. (And his joke fell flat. Lame-O.)
And he hasn’t even memorized his opening 90 second statement…
Iws that lipstick on Joe’s cheek?
puppy love
I’m not george bush–crickets chirping…
Lieb keeps having to refer to his notes
ATTACK!
Holy shit Joe just said he opposed Bush on privatizing social security!
Lies…
Lamont needs to just out and out hammer him on this.
Ned’s a little nervous.
Lieberman didn’t welcome Ned, Ned did welcome Lieb
That’s right, Ned. Put it directly to him!
Ned’s looking a little less terrified now…
Lam talks about his volunteer and community service…wondering about opportunities for our kids…losing jobs in the state..gas prices doubled skyrocketing costs dependent foreign oil and capital. those who got us into this mess (iraq) have to be held accountable
Jane ..it looks like the entire debate will be cspan and msnbc…lamont is giving his opening speech…Good watching!!
Good, Ned came out swinging.
Ned
s smoking!
you’re a lying sos, Joe! you jest did it agin.
Lieberman used the “I’m not Bush” line.
Lamont seems a bit nervous and unrehearsed. Note to self: take voice lessons before running for office.
boo yaa ! Go Ned.
Ned’s voice is higher than I expected — maybe those cords will loosen a tad as he relaxes (which I hope he does).
Question to lieb on iraq
he was critical of the administration for what bush did after the invasion REALLY??
“My opponent is running against me on this one issue..all over on this issue one day for, one day against….if you believe we shd get out of iraq have the courage of yr convictions
blaming sos, too. you are no senator, joe.
ned comes out swinging.
Leiberman trying to brand Lamont as a single issue guy then a flipflopper
Ooh, flippant, dismissiveness from Lieberman.
oh jeeze, Joe borrowing from the flip-flop book of Karl rove.
FWIW
MSNBC poll
Who won the Connecticut Senate debate?
Joe Lieberman
Ned Lamont
It was a draw
Lamont whacks down wmds, supports murtha, tens of thousands died, hundreds of billions spent destabilized the middle east it was a mistake
Yeah, Ned’s better now, but he needs to look into the camera more.
Is it just me, or is Lieberman looking like a royal prick here? I’m waiting for him to stride across the stage like Rick Lazio.
Ned’s furtively looking around
Ned hasn’t had 18 years of media coaching while in office. He’s doing much better since he took that deep breath halfway through the opening.
LIEberman is a better liar.
Absolutely!
What a lying WATB
Ned is coming out blazing. Go, NED!!
LAMONT!!
Lieberman is interrupting
Moderator! Joe has no respect for the format.
Ten minutes in and they are just arguing.
looks like it might just dissolve into an argument
lieb is trying to say lam has both positions on iraq withdrawal
lam we can get our troops out of harms way in 6 months important to look at the facts on the ground
lieb too soon disaster for iraqis and us YA
Ned! Wow!
Man, Holy Joe is looking like a pompous ass.
Lieberman is just mean. What an unpleasant man.
“That corner is a square” — well played.
OH SNAP
Turning the corner is a square
the daggars are out.
Joe sounds like he has Rove’s talking points down cold. What a prick–makes me dislike him more and more.
Ned called it an OCCUPATION!
Yeh!
Meanwhile, Josh Marshall shows perhaps why Joe needed a plan B: CT Jewish voters favored Ned 50-41 going into tonight:
http://www.talkingpointsmemo.c…..php#008951
Joe comes across a little like Sen. Burns in his debate with Jon Tester–like it’s an affront for him to have to defend his positions.
He’s doing pretty good. He does need to BREATHE.
Good elucidation on his war position.
Oh yeah, Iraq is a lot better that a year ago. Right.
Situation in Iraq is alot better different? WTF, Lieberman?
HoJo
“the situation in Iraq is a lot better different”
If Lieberman gives a sunshine and roses answer on how things are going in Iraq, he’s going to look like an out-of-touch ass.
question to lam wt is diff in iraq
lam lieb turning the corner? that corner is a square…progress but last 6 months going downhill incipent civil war best hope for success start bringing troops out of harms way
there for humanitarian support and political support
lieb trying to say things in iraq better than 3 years ago their troops ready to lead the fight, are we going to abandon them
lie – “iraq ia a lot better than it was a year ago”…. “that’s progress”
Ho Jo is slick as gooseshit and twice as stinky.
As long as Joe wants to talk about Iraq, he’s a dead duck.
well, if joey is so confused….
STFU and go home!
Joe is trying to have it both ways. He doesn’t want to stay in Iraq indefinitely, but he doesn’t want to set a definite timeline.
Lieberman is being nasty, petulant, and in a profoundly phoney way, “tough.”
Yuck.
lieb seems to want to interupt continously
Lieberman keeps mocking Lamont’s position as wishy-washy, and his alternative is we need to definitely leave but not by a definite date, we need to leave soon but not too soon? Yeah, that’s a much clearer position, Joe.
Say it JoHo “LAST THROES”
Joe’s counting of Ned’s alleged 6 positions is total BS and sounds like it.
Tell em Ned!
seems like Joe is the one flip-flopping.
He’s a prick though, inst he?
Ned is hammering on the timeline. Way to go, Ned.
condescending Joe
Joe lying again, says he’s not for an open ended committment. Is confident in Bush’s plans, yada-yada, yada-yada. Joe won’t let Ned finish, a sentence without cutting in–sounds desperate. Glad Ned didn’t back down and allow Joe to do it. Without being given it, Joe cuts in and responds to Ned’s response. Come on moderator, let Ned responsd to the response!
She’s letting HoJo get the last word everytime.
Cut’n Run Joe is such a pompous domineering ASS
Alright! Hamdan!
I hope Conn voters look deeply, ’cause Joe’s BShit is pretty thick.
They are letting this get out of hand. The moderator is letting WATB interrupt constantly.
9/11 had nothing to do w/ IRAQ
I hope at some point that Ned turns around and calls Lieberman on his rude interruptions. *g* That would be a great debate moment. Especially because Lieberman is earning a rebuke.
That moderator needs to slap Lieberman
That shit interupts over and over again
He is Fauxing Ned
Thanks for the updates ! Keep em coming
Ooooooooooh, good question. Ned, say HAMDAN!! HAMDAN!!
Lakoff
“Freedom, Liberty”
HoJo is using the right wing frame
Joe’s beating him on debating points…he’s attacking…
Yeah, John C, but we don’t want Ned looking like Mommy has to step in to help him.
wow– great question re Hamdan.
Joe really is absolutely indistinguishable from W, isn’t he? All Repub talking points …
“never attacked before”
Joe forgot about Ft. Sumter and Pearl Harbor and the entire Revolutionary War and War of 1812.
Michael Ware of TIME:
I wish Ned had that quote on tap.
Uh oh, Joe’s acting like he’s for limits on executive power.
Right, Ned. Blame Congress!!
I didn’t realize I could hate Lieberman more than I did this morning. What a complete ass.
Yeah, well that’s a great decision we’ll never get out of SCOTUS again if you keep allowing people like Alito and Roberts on the court, HoJo.
lil joey, what an asswipe.
If you aren’t for an open ended committment, then you ARE imposing some kind of deadline, you lying crapsack.
OH.MY.F*CKING.GOD.
HE INVOKED 9/11.
If Lieberman is NOT a Republican, I don’t know what else to call him. He just defended the administration, to boot.
I hope the Dems of Connecticut are seeing what I’m seeing.
lam casey we will start bringing troops home this fall lets set a timeline our generals want this
lieb everything is lam has yet another position on iraq your 6th position
question gitmo concentrate power on executive response to sept 11 attacks
lieb this administration pushed the envelope
president not above the law pres shd come to congress to get legal way nothing in court decision to release detainees
lam congress not asserting authority president acting as if above the law moral authority of the nation stronger if we obey the laws illegal wiretaps..shd have had hearings..censure is an appropriate remedy
Shorter Joe: I’m better at attacking mainstream Democrats than I am Republicans.
YES! CENSURE!
Ned – “should have debate over wiretaps”… “censure is an appropriate remedy”
eya gang,
saying hi from the Majority Report bloggie.
Ol Leeperman shuffling so fast his shoes are smoking!
Gerry Brooks looks like an aging Zorro in search of a buckle to swash…
CENSURE!! Yeah, NED!!
question if you win then wt
lam you act on yr conscience and wt is good for the people of yr state important dems stand up and talk about wt can be done
Ned smoked that one!
ned on censure–quick and move on.
lieb ACTUALLY SAID
THERE YOU GO AGAIN
“well, there you go again” — HoJo channeling Reagan
Talk about lobbing softballs questions for Joe.
good softball question to Ned
Bring up Joe’s position on rape victims…go Ned, go
there you go again– now he’s doing Reagan…
‘There you go again,’ says Joe, quoting Reagan.
“there you go again” sounds familiar
Lieberman isn’t really debating–he defending himself. ATTACK!
Never been attacked before like 9/11 eh?
Um, WTC circa 1993 anyone? There weren’t radical islamic extremists then?
Joe’s tossing the pork around
Lieberman – opposed most of what Bush wanted? Yeah, except the important things.
“Well, there you go again…”
Now he’s Ronnie.
Ned better smack it out of the park when we get to the question of Lieberman running post-primary as an independent…
joe – “I can get a lot of money for CT”…
HoJo
“get things done”
yeah, get the right wing things done.
he is distorting his voting record repeatedly. I hope NEd calls him on it.
“I’ve opposed most of what the President has proposed…”
Like what?
I hope that CT voters see Joe calling everybody by their name– calling in the chits to the reporters to.
USER!
HoJo is trying to talk like a liberal now.
Agh, you f*cking moron…Joenertia, if we spend money on an unending, unlimited basis, there will be NO money for the healthcare you think you can deliver to CT.
Cripes, if you could deliver healthcare, you should have in 18 years.
Joe-Nertia: My brown-nosing across the aisle helps Connecticut!
Now HOJO is blaming Clinton for N Korea!
Hate to be so superficial, but Lieberman’s bottom teeth are creeping me out.
Can’t hear what he’s saying for staring at his teeth.
Does Joe realize that “There you go again …” isn’t a quote that resonates well with Democrats?
Great catch Dover: “well, there you go again” — HoJo channeling Reagan”
CT voters have to know that the state gets squat back from the feds. HoJo is greatly exaggerating.
Hilarious! Joe has more trouble criticizing Bush than Lamont. KISSY KISSY!
Yeah, hit ‘im, Ned!
We should talk to Kim Jong Il, ‘but I wouldn’t do it now.’ Huh?
lieb on korea is trying to show he is independent of bush talk to them directly
missles which COULD HAVE HIT THE WESTERN UNITED STATES
oh please
lam biggest threat to us world peace is a rogue nation w nuclear capability NK fits that description most serious threat facing US today
Is Joe aiming for the whiny old schoolmarm vote?
ned – “n. korea poses biggest threat to u.s.”
Lieberman isn’t really debating–he defending himself. ATTACK!
ATTACK!! ATTACK!! ATTAAAAAAACK!!!!
Holy shit!!! Lieberman DID NOT just say direct talks with Kim Jong Il, did he? That’s an enormous sea change in American foreign policy at a time when North Korea is acting provacatively. HOLY CRAP…
Dover- doesn’t CT rank 48-49 in “return on the $”
Clinton Admin never did one on one with NK says Joe — bullshit — I saw Albright chatting with Dear Leader (NK version)
What does being a Democrat mean to you? It means a means to an end.
Roots!
Censure, Real Intelligence, GO NED!
Joe keeps saying I will do this and that and I want to do this and that…he sounds like he hasn’t been Senator before.
Ain’t that right, Joementum?
here we go: building to the Independent question?
No diplomacy– hmmm, sounds perfectly Cheneyesque.
Yeah, bring up the lobbyists!
Damn, Lamont’s good at putting a point across.
eya gang!
lets see if i can post here,
it’s allready gobbled one comment of mine…
Common GOOD. That’s good!
lam offer constructive alternatives start talking about the common good question about being a dem
lieb talking about jfk now talking about God
he’s got a lot of nerve in both cases
Joe is sampling Kennedy, Bentsen, Reagan…
Oh, I thought Senator Lieberman was running for re-election. Apparently, it’s JFK.
John Casper @ 4:15 pm (#119) – What he really meant to say was “never before in the average attention span of this country”.
jerk won’t even let her finish the question
What does being a Democrat mean to Joe? A means to an end, methinks.
“…it comes from the hand of God.”
I remember that goal.
Oh, JoHo.
I knew John F. Kennedy.
John Kennedy was a friend of mine.
And you, sir, are no John Kennedy.
Now he invokes Clinton– both sides now.
POS!
Holy Joe plays the God card!
Even Joanne’s question to Ned seems geared to help Lieberman. Come on Ned, talk specific’s about Joe’s other Bush related positions! Now Lieberman is invoking JFK! Give me a break! The prick is more like Bush or Nixon than JFK! Lieberman keeps hammering the “single position candidate”, it’s past time for Ned to burst that talking point.
Kennedy? Lieberman has the balls to bring up Kennedy and talk about what Democrats stand for? I don’t think so.
“Any campaign is about the future… did I mention my 36 years of service???”
Joe, You are no John Kennedy
Oh, you are NOT invoking Kennedy, you dirt bag.
Leaverman looks like Teller’s father!
I love watching Joe promise all the wonderful things he’s going to do in the Senate. He’s been there for eighteen years, but apparently that was just a warm-up.
“He’s applying a litmus test to me.” *voice cracks* WATB!
oh look! we are frustrating and defeating the Democrats!
Fitz!! … oh… guess not.
ol joe
squawking out the repub party line like a parrot.
Real Democrats are the voters of CT
Now Joe’s talking about health cre agaain…the first time I heard him talk about that the slots fell out of my crib.
“Who’s the real Democrat here?” She’s on to Lieberman.
Go Ned- in effective attack on war, AA, health care, ed
Whoa! Joe is stepping in it big time.
Joe explains what the Democratic Party is all about — and if anyone examines his record they will see he is 180 degrees off from it.
Yes Ned!! HoJo undermines the party! SCORE!!
This is the opening– he didn’t take it.
Ned smacks Joe on Social Security!
come on ned – hammer him for cut & run
Sorry, but Lamont is getting smoked, just on debating points…
Ned spoke of Social Security, but he didn’t get specific and now Ned is getting slammed by Lieberman on Joe’s multiple positions on it. God Damn it! What a lying weasel!
“spending a lot of his own money to disseminate untruths about my record…”
Um, Joe-nertia, your record speaks for itself. No money required.
lieb says he will bring affordable health insurance…in a state where the big insurance companies pay for him to do what they want.
lam wvit tv nbc affiliate hartford
lam dems stand up present constructive alt sen soc sec affirm action education universal health care then dems win again
lieb trying to weasel his way out of the social security thingie ’so why don’t you stop spreading that kind of untruth?’
Lamont can’t let those snide comments and accusations slide. Someone calls you a liar, you shout them down.
joe keeps acting like Ned is lying… I think we see his strategy now…
SOMEBODY please remind Joe of his manners and the RULES!
Kobe, sic him!
Joe pulls an ad hominem — Ned’s financing his campaign with his own money.
Lieberman’s on the defensive…oh my…what a hateful, hateful man.
Joe’s nastiness is really disgusting.
lamont’s money isn’t as pure as that of the insurance industry
Give Joe props…he brought his A-debating game…Lamont looks like the shaky little brother of Martin Sheen…
Oooh! Attacking Ned for hurting the Democratic Party. WTF!!!
Go get him, Ned!
And lLieberman is spending the fat cats’ money.
And why doesn’t Lieberman stop spreqading the lie that Ned is a single issue candidate.
oh it’s all ned’s fault, i see
Joe’s got nuthin’ but the Rove playbook!
Liberman at the same time is obviously out of touch, and hasnt responded to the state on the war and women’s issues. This man voted to confrim Alito after all. Ned does not much going on up top. He’s not a Senator. He’s a Hack. Look at the camera, that is live TV 101. Terrible presentation, weak speaker.
Lieberman is using the GOP tactic of ” attack your opponent”. It’s ugly, and turns people off. I hope Lamont sticks with more positive remarks.
So Joe voting with Bush is a sign of his bipartisan appeal, while Ned working with a local school board is a sign that he’s a toady Republican? W.T.F.?
I had to turn it off after Lamont just sat there and let Lieberman spin on Social Security.
That was bad. Really bad.
I hope Lamont gets better. Right now, he doesn’t look good at all up there.
Oh, man, what a schmuck Lieberman is!
Joe is a lying sack of shit, but he’s winning this big. God damn it.
Jeez…why didn’t Lieberman play this tough with Cheney?
Joe, you’re a little bitch.
Ned, Ned, ask how often this guy has been home to see his constituents. Do better for Connecticut, my buns.
ned – “are you a democrat or are you an independent?”… “you can’t have it both ways”
Nice! Ned told Joe to shit or get off the pot.
Joe stutter, stutter, stutter…
smooth eh? he is taking less time to figure out his next lie…
Joe-Nertia: Lying, stinking, steaming plotz on the pavement of politics.
Joanne is doing a lousy job.
principles not potholes
Gerry Brooks
lieb says lam would hurt the 3 congressional races i laugh at ned lamont holding up party loyalty “i’m the democrat in this race”
lamont make up yr mind: are you a dem or indep? endorse the winner of the primary
lieb compromises on matters of principals
i lamont get the repubs to vote with me in our local issues
Awright — Ned’s hit one outta the park on his local record.
“Pothholes” was Ned’s best respense imo.
Hojo
WATB!!!!!
Good shot, Ned.
Someone yelled something.
“I’m compromising on potholes, he’s compromising on principles” — ZING!
Beautiful Ned Lamont….”I got the Republicans to vote with me 80% of the time and those were questions about pot holes…..” Very good comback.
What’s the special help that a lot of the voters are going to need.
Nice one NED!!!
Ned is hitting hard & effectively on HOJO failures
Ned-I convinced Repulican selectmen to vote with ME 80% of the time.
SCORE!
“I can do a better job for the State of Connecticut…”
And then Ned hits it out of the park after Joe-nertia tees it up for him with that.
Ned points out Joe-nertia’s record sucks.
“I convinced the Republicans to votewith me.”
deriding CT voters: “special needs”
I haven’t been so disgusted since 04 when I watched the shit coming out of the chimps mouth…go Ned!
Lamont just came into his own. His initial nervousness seems to be gone. Beautiful response once again.
Ned! hOME RUN THERE. hE’S GETTING HIS cHOPS
ned scores = “we are 49th out of 50th in our senator bringing things home for the state”
Bear cub Ned
Finally, a substantive debate! What a refreshing change from the scripted presidential debates.
Lieberman is so damn arrogant in his demeanor. He thinks we’re a bunch of elementary school children in need of his lectures. I just can’t stand that man.
Rape victims! Attack! Go, Jane!
not much impressed with Joanne myself.
RAPE GURNEY JOE
doing better…
ohhh–gurney time!
Wahoo!!! Plan B!!! Go NED!!!
rape guerney joe!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Gurney man!!
Universal health care. Rape care. Good ones.
Rape Gurney Joe…woo hoo Lamont…go, go , go
Unbearable bear ad! Mwa ha ha ha!
Well, Joe asked people to look at his record….
I can hardly bear to look at or listen to a man who is, in my opinion, a sycophant and a toadie. One of the reasons I’m not one of the door-to-door campaigner/canvasers is that sleaze makes me speechless and pissed off. That asshole, Lieberman, keeps saying, “there you go again.” and , “Ned’s got me confused” and I just want to get in his face and call him a lying bastard. My mother would be so disappointed.
fireworks
this is the 6th not the 4th, but they are shooting off the cannons!
YAY! Ned brought up emergency contraception! Hittin’ him with the chair.
PLAN B PLAN B PLAN B!!!!
Yeah, NED!!
Ned just called Joe a Liar and without being granted it, Joe’Nertia responded to Ned’s response. Joe gets slammed because what his response to Ned doesn’t hold water. Thank goodness they are not letting Joe have a 3-2 speaking advantage. Tom Monahan seems to be a Lieberman partisan. Ned shoves the Bear ad, Slams Joe for Universal Health Care! Going after Rape Gurney Joe–Bingo! Go Ned! Joe goes after Ned’s record, instead of debating those points. Classic Rovian misdirection. Who coached Joe, Karl Rove?
“short ride for a rape victim”
HOJO now is stuttering & looking rattled
lieb give all people chance to choose me
lam i dont think this is the kind of leadership people want 49/50 of dollars coming back to the state
question from tom monahan wvit tv hartford chief political correspondent are you weicker’s bear cub?
lam lieb has to make up his mind, am i too far to the left or am i really a repub bear ad was embarrassing rape victim short drive use seniority on the wrong side of issues its a real problem
OH Joe bad dodge.
Yeah, call Rape Gurney Joe on it!
7:32 Ned begins to turn it around
Looserman is the nervous one now! HA I say HA HA
Ned has found his stride
Put it in his face Ned!
$250,000,000/day in Iraq.
Watched a bit of this thing–Sorry to say it- but Joe’s kickin Ned’s ass. My wife came through the room and I asked her what she thought of Ned. She said “looks like a squirrel who just came out of his hole”
I think this thing’s over.
Joementum is tanking on the multi-millionairre question
Joe is absolute horse-pucky.
Ned’s wealth? Ned needs to come back with Joe’s special interest money.
joe – “who is this guy?”…. ” he’s a rich guy! I work hard!”
Who is Ned Lamont?
The off-broadway show…
It’s who he is – but who is he? Good one, Joe – way to be incoherent.
Lieberman is repeating himself, not making new points
Who is Ned Lamont? CT next Senator
Lieberman seems like a snippy, petty….well, let’s just say it….a whiny ass titty baby!
WATB!!!!! WAAAAAAAAAAA
I love the lady’s questions!
Joe has to work hard for everything he gets. WATB!
sorry for the previous typo!
I don’t have that kind of money> No, he uses the money from his special interest groups.
“Who is Ned Lamont?”
Is that all you’ve got Joe?
not enough
What is wrong with a guy having honestly, hard-earned money?
Joe actually has the chutzpah to say he doesn’t have that kind of money and that he has to work hard for what he has.
Cripes…cry me a river!!
Pompous Joe: “Who is he? He’s not one of my friends. He is a little tiny nothing. You must vote for meeeeeeee…”
Joe going into starting every sentence with, “look…” mode. Putz!
If only Joe had been such a nasty little prick during his debate with Cheney — where the Dick got the best blow job of his life.
‘I have to work hard for everything I raise.’ — Joe Lieberman
Hell, WHO IS Lieberman? I tell you, if I had no idea who Ned Lamont was before this, I’d be standing and cheering simply on the issues.
Hee!
Joe calling someone else a hypocrit!!!
i live for irony!
Who is lil joey? Bush butt boy!
Joel Ieberman – every answer=who is lamont? see, he’s getting repug amnesia
If Joe was any good at being Senator, we wouldn’t be having this discussion.
Don’t tune out yet. Lamont is bringin’ it!
lam start investing in our country again, education, health care
lieb says he doesnt have very much $ and lamont does. i will deliver $ to conn

lieb has the FUCKING NERVE to say he is the good guy on reproductive rights
Whew!!!
Let’s hear from the voters!
News Flash: Joe Lieberman has to work hard for his campaign money.
Is there anyone left in this country who finds it convincing when a politician says this?
Joe actually has the nerve to claim he better represents gays and lesbians?!
Ugh, could Lieberman come across as more pompous or self-satisfied? He sounds just like a Republican. His appearance is so smug, one would think it’ll turn off voters.
i am getting so pissed at mr jowls, i live in mass and want to move to conn just to vote agaisnt the weasel
Why is Lieberman getting an extra rebuttal every time?
New campaign slogan: Joe Lieberman: one nasty piece of work!
I can’t believe how unpleasant he seems. Maybe that’s the way he wants it but I can’t imagine anyone warming to the guy.
Ned Lamont, on the other hand, is sharp, sincere, enthusiastic–what a winner!
Maybe it seems different on TV, but on lo-fi audio, Lamont sounds much more original, energetic and forceful.
He also has a tinge of JFK in his voice. Joe just drones. Drone Joe, drone!
Amazing!
Ned is going toe to toe with a 3 term senator.
He’s hot shit, that’s no easy feat.
WOW, did Lieberman come off like a smug little twerp. What a turn-off. Lamont comes off as smart and earnest, and Lieberman is like some caricature of a fat, cigar smoking politician from a New Yorker cartoon.
Ned, just nailed Joe on the PAC contributions. Has been blessed, highlight personal attacks. Joe’s response is you know my record. AFLCIO, Planned Parenthood, League of Conservation Voters, Human Right’s Committe. Joanne didn’t allow Ned to respond to that, but always let’s Joe. Now watching a Joe’Nertia ad–God Damn it “Courage of his Convictions”. Have seen Ned’s ad before, it’s not hard hitting enough to respond to the Joe attack. Now for viewers questions.
showing the ads, lieb pathetic, lamont w his kids where he teachers
hundreds of emails
cost of energy
I think Joe’s been stronger, but that Lamont is holding up not too badly for a first timer. Ned to get off the ropes and swing harder.
Jesus just asked about high gas prices.
Joe completely rolled over for Dick Cheney in their “debate” in 2000 but tonight he’s frothing. It’s like he enjoys having his belly scratched by Republicans but will growl and snap at Democrats.
cl
Why didn’t Lamont mention that he asked Joe to put a cap on spending for the campaign, and Joe turned him down?
If I’ve offended, forgive me…
energy needs and hi costs
lam after 9 11 we wd have done anything our govt asked us to do instead VP no lobbyist left behind look whats happened price gas carter moral equivalent of war price went down fat happy SUVx now is the time deal w conservation in a serious way
lieb THERE YOU GO AGAIN. he actually said this.
“There you go again…” Yeah, keep invoking Reagan, schoolmarm.
There you go again…. That’s Regan’s line
HO is channeling Ronnie, & lying again
rwcole – Ned is doing much better than he was initially. Joe started out attacking and now he’s floundering and isn’t keeping track of what he has said. I think Ned was just nervous at first. He is doing better now.
I have to admit, I’m sick of the “there you go again” phrase Joe keeps spitting out.
joe– there you go again, i know what i’m doing and you don’t.
sticks out his tongue, nanny nanny poo poo.
This isn’t Fox news, bitch!
ned gave a clear answer on energy conservation… I have no idea what joe is talking about
This isn’t fox news sir. ROFL!
This isn’t Fox News!
“Just let me talk here — this isn’t Fox News.”
DAAAAAAAMMMNNN.
“This isn’t Fox News Sir” … YES! GO NED GO!!!!
Hole-ey Joe has dug himself a deep one and there’s no way to get out now.
VERY lame response on the Energy Bill!!! I cannot believe his hypocrisy!
Yea Lamont winning online poll 67% to 29%!
Tim,
Is there any postive you have to say about Lamont?
what : msgop is on fox news!!!
“This isn’t Fox news here”
Laffin Laffin Laffin
ned gets joe on supporting the enronergy bill
joe is asking for “30 sec rebuttal” but taking much more time
cheater
Ned’s doing fine. Joe’s been lying through his teeth, using vicious attacks. People are going to realize Lieberman is more Emperor Palpatine than warm and fuzzy Connecticut Democrat “Independent Democrat.”
Ned is definitely not getting equal time.
FDL regulars: who is Tim Wayne? Have you seen this commenter in FDL threads before?
Lieberman is on the record supporting permanent bases in Iraq:
http://www.cnn.com/2003/ALLPOL…..index.html
Joe is no friend of Dorothy.
egregious, i hope you took that walk. It might help your blood pressure.
email question jobs electric boat layoffs huge CT issue

lamont we have been exporting jobs manuf jobs
we can negotiate agreements fm a position of strength our workers can compete w anybody given a fair shot invest education freight ports losing jobs we can turn that around
question immigration
I can’t watch… Is Lamont getting better?
I have to agree with someone else upthread: Lamont looks like a nervous, frightened deer. In the admittedly few minutes I watched, Lamont seemed to have trouble bringing up specifics. He looked pretty bad.
And I knew Lieberman was spinning and lying.
I’d hate to think how it looked to someone who was actually looking for guidance on which candidate might be best. ‘Cuz the few minutes I saw? No contest. Lieberman wins the ignorant vote.
GEEZ all he can do is talk about how much pork he’s delivered to the state. Is he trying to bribe his way in? Isn’t this what all senators do anyway?
The line I liked best was, “It’s time for a change in Wash. and I’m going to be an agent for that change” AMEN BRO!
lieb fuel cells excess profits legislation get energy independence
lamont you supported repub energy
lieb interrupts
lamont this isnt fox news
Why does Joe get “two bites of the apple” on each question?
I dislike him more now than ever.
I do like the format of having video and e-mail
Joe says “There you go again” on the Energy Bill, but he still voted for it. Other parts of it “LIECAP”? Garbage! Would you vote against saving money–more garbage. Fool Cell Arguments, Introduced noting–bull shit about that. Priority in next term is simply to get elected. Go Ned, fucking Joe interrupting again. Yea, Ned nail Joe on that Bill. Joanne lets him have rebuttal, but will bet she doesn’t give Ned the same. Co-sponsoring a bill that doesn’t have a chance in hell. Everyone knows the Repugs won’t allow it. Damn it Joanne, let Ned reply. This is getting ridiculous, Ned’s down 3-2 in terms of the ability to respond. The Bitch needs to enforce the rules. Now Joe’s pushing the Incumbent Seniority angle. 2nd in Seniority on Public Works, More of the supporting legislation garbage. Problem is folks buy into “supporting legislation”, even though an ice cube in hell would have a better chance. Ned’s nailing Joe on the Jobs export angle–go Ned. We owe it to our workers, Joe’s restive when Ned said that. We’ve been loosing Jobs. Next topic Rove’s divide and conquer “Illegal Immigrants”. Wanna bet Joe talks about a National ID card? Oh, if he does and Ned nails him on it….please go there!
oh fuck, the illegal immigrants tirade.
Lamont’s doing fine. He’s got nothing to lose.
lam on immigration empoyers benefit fm current situation deal w people who are here

joe is smooth, but ned’s doing fine
How about this meme …
House Republicans want to give pay raises to Coyotes. Because thats all that militarizing the border will do …
It does seem that the moderator is kow-towing to Lieberman. What up with that? Can someone from Connecticut explain why this woman might be favoring Lieberman?
last update from Jane is 7:20 p.m.?
Joes a disgusting little weasel.
it is amazing that he can lie so easily though.
Ned turned a WATB ? about finances back to DC’s corruption
Joe-nertia: “…respect the public’s right to know”
F*cker — Liebermen, if you really did, you’d be leading the charge on investigating this White House.
lieb final question to lam ethical scandals
will you release tax returns
lam we have submitted hundreds of pages of financial info transportation bill earmarks scandal complicit part of the problem bridge to nowhere 63 lobbyists for every congressman stand up and act on behalf of the public good
Nice turning of the tables on Lieberman about the ethics stuff. “If you’re not shouting against this, you’re part of the problem.”
Uh oh.. don’t tell Ed Teller that Ned said “Bridge to Nowhere”…
Ethics, indeed. Get him, Mr. Lamont!!
The moderator is absent
Real biefly? He doesn’t know anything about real briefly.
Lieb is an ethical problem for Democrats. Can’t win the primary just go Indy
Lamont is the FIRST Democrat I’ve heard publicly say we should punish the EMPLOYERS of illegal immigrants! He’s the only one who makes sense! And makes the great point that if you pay a decent wage and give benefits then you WILL find Americans to take these jobs–but hell, work for pennies like slaves? For that you have to get Mexicans I guess. Sheesh.
Who are these lousy moderators??
Cut that WATB Joe off when he interrupts, for cryin’ out loud.
Joe looks like an asshole, repeatedly interrupting Ned.
JOE!! STOP INTERRUPTING AND SHUT YOUR FUCKING MOUTH!!
Way, way too many interruptions allowed for Joe.
Major deal for the weak moderator.
Ned lobs a great question!
lieb talking about earmarks benefiting CT
moderator interrupts
lam you want to post about earmarks for state of CT not doing well alaska does much better
lieb interrupts
moderator squashes lieb
lam goes on lieb interrupts again mod sq again
lam says lieb said 18 yrs ago now is the time for a change do you still think that?
lieb talking about his seniority
Joe talking out of both sides of his mouth about longevity and incumbency. He’s against it, unless it’s his own.
Wait, Lowell Weicker was bad “because he kept going off on his own, off on his own tangents”? Sounds familiar….
Ned rocked out on Lobbyists. Leiberman looked shocked that anyone is against lobbyists and earmarks.
Boy, Joe sure hates rich people. I wonder if he’s going to ask rich-as-all-hell Barbara Boxer to NOT come and campaign for him?
Who controls the clock in this debate
Neuro 397–as Digby related recently in the “parable of Mary Matalin”, he may look like an ass interrupting so much, but he’s getting his line out there.
Just caught myself screaming “SHUT UP” at Joe on TV!
This Lieberman makes me nuts!
“could Ned Lamont save those 31,000 jobs?”
He could probably create NEW jobs, Joe-nertia, without slapping on the damned Republican kneepads.
Ned is morphing into Mr. Smith. Hope all Nutmeggers value that as much as we do.
I’m having huge problems logging on and refreshing, but I’ve watched for 10 minutes and Joe has interrupted 4 times and is just as defensive as a 4 year old.
Got 6 more good years in me- what is he, a horse?
It’ll be important to follow up on the falsehoods. Remember Cheney saying to Edwards he’d never met him until the debate?
And that he’d not suggested a connection between 9/11 and Iraq? Those things got him throught the debate, but they’re transparent falsehoods that need to be hammered on.
closing statements
Hey Joe! STFU!
Joe: “I think this has been a really good debate” (reading–he wrote it before the debate)
lieb can lamont save jobs by bringing govt money here? im about more than one issue
closing statements
lieb still looking at notes a LOT seniority courage of his convictions blergh says lamont cant decide about iraq
the moderating sucks.
oooo. Lieberman’s ending sounds arrogant and condescending.
Joe Lieberman, a Republican pretending to be a Democrat who is thinking of running as an Independent keeps asking: Who is Ned Lamont?
joe giving his closing statement… my eyes are rolling back in my head… and snoring outta my nose…
Joe’s singing “Memories”
Jois so full of shit
Interesting to see Lieberman break out the “ain’t we had some good times, baby?” argument.
Ned is closing strong.
bring it home, ned
Please, please, It’s MY seat, dontchu forget it.
Ned is bad when he reads his talking points
yeah, joe, i never voted for you cause i knew you well all the years i was in CT.
Lamont wins- Leeaverman loses for being a smarmy prick.
The “Bush-Cheney-Lieberman Energy Bill”, mwahaha.
GO NED!
Anybody keeping a list of web debate votes opportunities?
Go Ned! You’re the best!
ned – strong closing… strong and clear

Last question: Joe’s slam of Ned on Tax Returns, Ned handles it well, slams Joe about the bills that shouldn’t pass and earmarks. Joe’s slamming tax returns, I thought Ned dealt with that. Joe hammering Ned on local earmarks. Ned slams God Damn it, Joe keeps interrupting. I’m getting pissed.
It is your turn Joe: Go, nail him. Joe with “That Senator” and “Bread and Butter”, I’ve saved thousands of jobs and I’m the one–what a fucking ego. Could Ned Lamont have saved those jobs–Joe you didn’t save them. Fuel cell–give me a break. I think I’ve got 6 more years, I listen, I care, I’m more than 1 issue. God I hate that man. Bitch didn’t let Ned respond to Joe. It’s constantly 3-2 in terms of Joe’s time. Record of results. Slamming challenger. Joe is saying 90% of the time and goes back to Ned’s selectman. Going across the divide.
God, this seemed like a set up. Joanne was a poor moderator and she let Ned get away with murder. Now, she’s not holding him to his time limits, he goes on and on. Only gives Ned 90 Seconds to close. Come on Ned, don’t be so General. It won’t take me 18 years for Health care. Good. Roll back energy bill–good. I won’t find common ground on compromising Social Security. Most importantly bring the troops home. Good, slam the 250 Million a day in Iraq Rat Hole. Senator, it’s not about anyone’s career, it is a vote for your dreams, your heart–still too general.
Great closing by Ned!
Yay, Progressive values! What abreath of fresh air! Dreams, hope, heart!!!
Quite a stirring closing for Mr. Lamont! Go NedHeads!
“this is not about anybody’s career”
The Lamont camp should issue a simple, declaratory statement immediately after the debate about their disappointment that Lieberman flaunted the debate’s rules by continually interrupting their candidate. It shouldn’t draw any other conclusions, only that Joe repeatedly interrupted the candidate. The local media will then make that the story. And Joe looked most sinister when he interrupted.
We’ll see how mature the Lamont team is after the debate. To claim they won will take no high ground. To claim Joe cheated—maybe.
let’s go to NBC30.com and blog like crazy.
$50 to Ned.
FWIW, Ned may be able to repair some of the damage about the multiplicity of his positions on Iraq by saying he doesn’t have access to accurate intelligence.
Ned killed him on energy, great job!!
rw, I thought Ned got stronger as it went and he never interrupted, he left that to HoJo.
You know, if Feisty Joe has showed up for the 2000 debate with Cheney, instead of Cuddlin’ Joe, Lieberman would be VP now. I know a number of people in Florida that voted for Nader after seeing Joe’s piss-poor performance against Cheney in 2000. They decided there wasn’t that much difference between the two tickets, since Cuddlin’Joe kept yucking it up and agreeing with Cheney.
Excellent blog Firedoglake!
thanks for making it available!
Noron has it. Joe’s a Rethug.
strong finish by Ned
73% NED WINS online poll (for what that’s worth anyway!)
:)
MSNBC says vote for Ned winning the debate is 75% to 25% for HoJo.
Lieberman did himself no favors. He came off just like a Republican.
Major news story to be ignored tomorrow by the MSM: Joe feisty in debate with Democrat, complete personality switch from earlier love-fest “debate” with Darth Cheney.
Ned seemed a bit nervous at times but that might not be a bad thing–it contrasted strongly with the polished politician-speak of Lieberman!!
Thanks for introducing me to Ned and putting the focus on this race.
Am switching over to Noron on Softball. Looking over prior comments. Noron is showing poll saying Joe won 75-25%. Netroots is getting slammed on Softball. Getting sick of Hardwood types on Softball. After this debate, I’m hating Joe even more. Wish Ned had done better. Noron is now slamming Ned and laughing. Now Harwood is doing a number on Ned. Contrary to what Noron and Harwood said–Ned is not as polished as I’d hoped. I’m so sick of Joe that if I lived in CT and Joe won the debate, I’d actually vote for a Repug. I couldn’t hate Lieberman, unless his last name was Bush and like Bush is a lying sack of Shit!
Christ, I hate Lieberman. What a wank.
Sigh.
OK, so if you were a completely clueless voter watching the debate, what would you think? Seriously?
I thought, for Ned having no national public experience, did an excellent job… Joe – for a very experienced politician – sounded polished but obtuse..
I don’t think anybody expects Ned to be all slicky-slick… works to his advantage

It is my sad experience to say that all the negative Ned comments will be front paged in the media tonight and tomorrow.
Yet we need all voices to be heard but it is a fact. It is very hard to debate for the first time when one isn’t experienced in it.
Many of us adored Howard Dean, but those first debates were difficult, although we knew what he said, thing were turned around quickly. Hopefully there are more of us ready to straighten out the spin.
Excellent closing remarks by Lamont. He sounded energized. (I’m just surprised Joe didn’t interrupt him.)
And where’d all these Liebertrolls come from?
Who do you think won the Democratic debate on NBC 30?

Ned Lamont 149 76%

KO says that Schumer is backing the dem primary winner.
Department of There’s More To Do: so after the whole debate, my little liveblogging fingers drooping w exhaustion, my husband turns to me and says, so, which candidate do you support?
75% Ned Lamont won debate. Yeah! I wrote a lengthy explanation why I thought Ned won.
Crocker Jarman!!!
ok, i gave money to ned, and abhore holy joe…didn’t watch but listened as i worked….hate to say it, but thought holy joe won easily.
too bad the fucker didn’t do that well against cheney.
ER -
Yes, Liebertrolls, indeed.
Just got off the phone with my mother who was a 45 year resident of CT. She thought Lamont was quite good – didn’t really know much about him but was impressed. Thought Lieberman was smug, arrogant and out-of-touch.
Lieberman is toast.
lmao egregious what did your hubby think?
Lamont 76%
Lieberass 22%
Draw 1.9%
WOW spinner on Keith O is saying that if Joe loses this seemingly because of his pro-war position it’s going to push other Dems into the anti-war camp.
Could this little election actually be the catalyst to get us out of that hellhole?
And where’d all these Liebertrolls come from?
Just ignore them. They’re paid republican operatives.
I just contributed another $20 to Lamont.
reluctantly have to call it a draw at best, which is not altogether unexpected – HoJo’s got his lyin’ schtick down to a polished shine. Ned is earnest, scored a few points, but I’mnot sure it was a convincing first impression to those folks that haven’t been paying attention. That doesn’t diminish my enthusiasm or optimism – just being pragmatic.
will there be any other debates?
Keith Olbermann on this debate now; KO needs to be told it’s not about Iraq and the occupation.
It’s about EVERYTHING that affects the voters of Connecticut that Republicans have done that hurts them with Leiberman’s complicity.
OldCoastie @ 5:01 pm (#461) – I agree with your assessment, although I wonder how it would appear to the “average joe”. People seem to expect polish, and actually prefer it over substance.
Let’s hope Connecticut Democrats are a little smarter than that.
WHo won the debate? Poll on local station’s site.
http://www.nbc30.com/news/9471030/detail.html
Ned: pretty green, a neophyte
Joe: a self-stuffed bully
I don’t think too many people will like the latter.
The Liebertrolls are Republicans, duh!
No one loves holy Joe more than the repukes. certainly not Democrats!!
Irony!
Jo-wels whined the whole hour about how Ned’s ads were all an attack on him, yet JL’s closing statement was one long ad hominen
attack on Ned, and Ned’s closer was purely positive about what he would do as Senator.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
“And where did all these Liebertrolls come from?”
LOL! Noticed ‘em too. All “doom n’ gloom” and “I hate Joe, but Joe was great!”
Sure hope Joe paid ya’ll in cash, ’cause his word means sh*t. :)
In a similar vein to egregious, I told my wife I was watching the debate and she said “Lamont, he’s the Democrat, right?” And I just “yes”.
(Her clarification was that she had already moved Leiberman to the independent column)
DAB 471:
That’s such good news. I am worried that people will judge his abilities based on this debate, which I think was less than stellar (not bad, just not that great). If you’re mom, who doesn’t know Lamont, like him, then I think there’s great hope.
Punaise @ 478
This was Ned’s one bite. RGJoe would have to be even crazier than we think to put this crap on display again.

Joe Lieberman 22%
Ned Lamont 76%
It was a draw 1.9%
the moderation sucked 99%
Ned’s suit did not fit well, he had a couple of deer in the headlight moments and until the “fox news” retort Joe did bully him.
But an old rule of thumb is that if the challenger does not shoot themselves in the foot then they win any debate over the incumbent just by standing side by side.
There were no knockdowns some good jabs by both candidates.
Ned has to be ready for Who is Ned Lamont from now until the primary.
Olbermann just nailed it – compared Joe to Crocker Jarmin from the 1972 Robert Redford film The Candidate.
I disagree with Ned and think the election SHOULD be about Joe! He’s been a colossal failure as a Democrat and needs to GO!
Otherwise, as he says, how will we ever change course in this country while there are Dems in bed with Bush??
Bush’s words on N Korea today made me SICK and even more sure that things need to change SOON!
Can we have a new thread, please?
This one is taking forever to reload.
Thanks!
Joe lost.
Ned won.
a lying mr. smoothie will not cut it in november– the murkan people know lies now.
;>)
newtonusr 475 – thanks, that’s what I figured
Organic George — actually, Joe-nertia did Lamont a HUGE favor with the “Who’s Ned Lamont?” question.
HUGE.
Christy, Jane, will email you on this one.
Vizsla: I hope we are not going to hear who would you rather have a beer with……..I think Ned did great considering this is his first debate with a lying weasel. I’m sick of that crap. The point is that OLieberman has been talking health care for years and years and he wants victims of rape to go shopping for a hospital that lives up to it vows to treat people. I’m so sick of people…
Joe is trying to put NED on the defensive with the “who is Ned” crap–don’t fall for it ned, this is about holy Joe and no one else!
Joe is savvy enough to know that the candidate left on the defensive loses.
msnbc poll Go! Go! Vote!!
Winner of debate
Lamont 78
Lieb 21
Aargh! Who agreed to that set and the location of the moderator? Ned trapped in the middle, having to look left and right, while Joe relaxes and can have Ned and the moderator in his sight lines simultaneously? Need some theater pros on this team…
Ned: Deer in headlights, looked nervous. But Ned was MUCH better after the break. It was almost painful to watch him for the first 20 minutes or so.
Joe: Much more polished, but sounded really condescending. His gotcha points seemed so petty and the interrupting was just rude.
I’ll take earnest nervousness over smug condescension any day.
Ned did not suck, which is all the non-incumbent has to do.
As a one-time debate coach, I think Ned did allright. Seen worse. He got better through out the thing, which is important.
punaise @ 495
I’m guessing, going w/my instincts – I don’t know it for a fact. Will pursue (takes one for the team).
OT: watching the debate AND moderating this too-fast thread was fun!!! Some Liebertroll comments got vaporized — not fast enough —- oh well
Very good news that few Dems are coming out in full support of Joe over Ned! Even Hill is now saying she will support the winner of primary.
I hope for Joe’s sake that he and I never meet up in a dark alley. My Jewish whitegirl ass would beat his inside of five seconds, what with my quicker-than-lightening jab and all. (Boyfriend in college taught me how to box)
Okay, fantasy over…
I think it was a draw. Leiberman was so disgustingly negative from the outset, but he certainly had his talking points down. If you look past his so-called accomplishments (”I’m second in seniority!”) his patronizing, smarmy, creepy personae does him in.
Ned was nery nervous in the beginning, a bit like the proverbial deer in the headlights. But he recovered as soon as Joe started telling all those lies. Good for Ned. He got focused, pointed and landed some punches. I was especially impressed with his geniune-ness. The guy is an unpaid teacher, for cripes-sakes! Joe probably makes a phone call to the insurance lobby every time he pops into the Senate men’s room.
The contrasts between them are stark. But Ned needs to work on not sounding whiny, and just go for the jugular.
And I hate it when people interrupt me. Why did the weak-kneed moderator not tell Joe to simply STFU!!!
Having a chance to digest it all, I am a bit disappointed. I wanted Ned to slam Joe out of the park tonight and he didn’t. He came off nervous and unsure of himself, afraid to stand up to the bully named Joe. On the other hand, Joe was rude, and you could hardly keep up with the lies coming out of his mouth.
If you were a Lamont supporter before the debate, you still are. If you supported Leiberman, you might still be, although you definetly should feel like you need a shower. And if you were undecided, you probably want to know more. So while Lamont probably did not gain much tonight, he did not lose, and hopefully will learn that he needs to be more forceful in his approach.
Time for new thread?
NEW THREAD
Nice work *ilson, thank you.
*ilson can you get us a new thread?
Reality check, folks. And let me say this as one who has and will continue to contribute to Lamont.
Lieberman’s seasoning showed tonight. He missed no rebuttal opportunity — even when he technically was not allowed one. Ned in nearly every instance rebutted a rebuttable only after the moderator offered him an opportunity to speak. In the very early going, when he was not prompted to do so, he simply let the debate move on to the next question.
Ned is fighting on the side of the angels, and he did a pretty good job of standing up for Democratic principals, but he missed several chances to stick it to Lieberman. One small example: not a single mention of bankruptcy issue.
Before he debates again, he needs to work on two things: his grasp of the material (too much looking down at his notes), and facts at hand. There were a lot of specifics he could have used against Lieberman; heck, any blogger could have thrown a truckload in that direction.
Many of Ned’s examples were too broad. One instance: Lieberman’s statement that things are improving in Iraq. There’s a handy set of recent stats: numbers killed and kidnapped, numbers of militia now controlling neighborhoods, etc., that were left on the table.
I’m not a Connecticut resident, so I can’t speak to how it all played among the state’s voters. I’d say he did himself some moderate good. But I’d also say Lieberman threw a lot of bricks in his path. The danger: that Connecticut media will pick up on the flip-flop/80% Republican meme and never let it go.
And can anybody clue me in on what that tax return business was about?
So anyone who thinks Lieberman did better is a troll????
Man. That’s really sad to hear people saying that.
I would wager I smelled Lieberman’s shit long before a lot of people here. I almost voted for Nader because I despised Lieberman and didn’t want his ass anywhere in the White House.
But the bits I saw of the debate … Lieberman did better.
Live with it.
I stepped out for a moment and there was about 80 comments, I come back and there are 508? Wow.
I’d like to see a commercial with Joe Lieberman’s voice cut throughout saying “Who is Ned Lamont?” (he did sound pretty clueless) and with different clips showing just who Ned Lamont is: working with kids, growing a business, standing up for women’s rights, etc. — ending with Ned Lamont saying “I’m Ned Lamont, and I approve this message.”
No, sorry, I saw an interrupter, not a rebutter. If I had been Ned I would have been sorely tempted to say, “Siddown, shaddup”.
Sue @ 5:22 pm (#515) – I saw Lieberman’s tendency to interrupt as rudeness, but I’m not sure how popular an opinion that might be among debate watchers.
My .02
Ned did fine, better towards the end.
Joe is a consummate pro (A lying sack of shit)
My take is that Ned will DEFINATELY win the primary now. He made it clear he’s a base candidate.
The general is where Joe is placing his bets, hence all the “across the aisle” rhetoric.
lisa, you want to sell us on Lieberman’s superiority, you’re going to have to try a different tack.
If that was the best that 18 years experience and a VP candidacy could produce, Joe’s toast.
Whereas Ned can only get better with practice.
MrsMarks — I think this is the only scheduled debate. Lieberman would only agree to one, was my understanding — although it’s always subject to change, I suppose.
lisa @448
“OK, so if you were a completely clueless voter watching the debate, what would you think? Seriously?”
Well this canadian is almost clueless, but I’m pretty sure I heard Leiberman indicate twice that his seniority would help him pork-barrel better than any other senator, that would lose my vote purely as a matter of ethics. (if he had had it before)
Christy — Thanks for the debate info. Now that you say it, it makes sense given the brevity of the remaining primary cycle.
Here’s hoping that when Ned next debates “Plan B” Lieberman as the duly elected DEMOCRATIC candidate from Connecticut he will have spiffed up his delivery. Again, I think he did himself some good tonight, but his style needs some sharpening and he needs more specifics in his rebuttal.
I see a new thread has started, so I assume this may be one of the last posts here. But thanks again, Christy, for the info on the debate schedule.
if one is an informed voter and watcher of politicians, lieberman lied repeatedly and whined. he lost. maybe the disenfranchised and uninformed will listen to the spin, we have to get the truth out.
lindyh at 358 egregious, i hope you took that walk.
I did. Walked thru the forest for half hour. Thought of nothing except how green and beautiful it was. Then back to work.
Need to be in touch with beauty and truth in order to fight for it.
eureka at 460–lmao egregious what did your hubby think?
He truly didn’t know which candidate I supported. Son, who is interested in politics in the future, rolling eyes.
If I were Ned, I would shoot a commercial that portrays Joe telling a lie in the debate, then presents the truth; Joe telling another lie, another rebuttal; back and forth a few times.
