“Why shoudl anyone think Lieberman will win as an Independent? That defies logic and reason.”

Apparently logic and reason aren’t what they used to be. The pollsters have already been running “If Lieberman runs as an independent, who will you vote for” polls. The numbers coming back are all over 50% Lieberman, under 20% Lamont, under 10% the Republican, a bit over 20% undecided.

Let’s assume that Lamont manages to win 80% of the undecided vote (rest going to Lieberman) and, oh, 20% of the people saying right now they’d vote for an independent Lieberman, on the run to November. That moves him up to 46% of the vote vs. a Lieberman 44% — before Republicans abandon their sure loser candidate to stop Lamont.

Lieberman is so extremely popular with both Connecticut’s plurality independents and minority Republicans that he has a majority even if every registered Democrat in CT votes for Lamont.

From out here in the boondocks, it appears to me that if Lieberman has any greater loyalities, they are to Lieberman’s face on TV. As a DINO, he got press time because of his regular criticism of the grassroots Democrat positions. As the equivalent of a RINA..Republican in Name Actually.. he may be a freak, but he isn’t the kind of freak whose statements will be likely to garner him TV face time.

Whichever way, it seems to me Lieberman now will be old news or no news.
