Who knew we’d show up in Connecticut and things would get cooking so fast? Thanks, Joe. Some random notes from the front:
. Ned had a press conference today in which he made the point — and I think quite forcefully — that Lieberman wants to "have it both ways." Absolutely. He’s trying to walk out the back door of the party but still be considered a Democrat. He said it over and over during the press conference today — he believes in the values of the Democratic party, and he’ll run as an "independent Democrat." Hogwash. As Digby reminds us, this is what Chuck Schumer said recently:
Schumer said that the DSCC "fully supports" Sen. Joe Lieberman in his primary bid, and he refused to rule out continuing that support if Lieberman were to run as an independent.
There were degrees of independence, Schumer said. "You can run as an independent, you can run as an independent Democrat who pledges to vote for Harry Reid as Majority Leader."
Which says to me that they’ve been coordinating this little hair-splitting act for quite some time. If Joe wants to run as part of the "Independent Democrat" party, he has to gather signatures to create such a party (and I’m not even sure he can). He won’t. If Joe bolts the party, he will be an Independent. Period. There will be no "Democratic" about it. I’m sure his internal polling tells him that if people don’t consider him a Democrat any more his numbers abjectly suck, and he certainly wants to retain all the perks his seniority in the Senate would grant him as a Democrat. But why does anyone believe he would do anything but auction himself off like a two-dollar whore to the highest bidder once elected? If we’re counting on his principled commitment to the Democratic party, color me skeptical.
. Despite this, sources say that Hillary Clinton believes that it’s important to respect the will of Connecticut voters and that she will commit to support the Democratic candidate — whoever that is — in November. It should be interesting to watch and see if others follow suit.
. Crooks & Liars has Joe equivocating on The Situation Room. Pretty sad, really.
. Jesus’ General observes that although Ned Lamont has 5000 donors on ActBlue and has raised $246,641, Joe has only 9 and has raised a grand total of $359. The General has a few suggestions as to what he can do with it. (As Watertiger notes, "is there an ActYellow page?")
. My companion for the days’ adventures, Paul Bass, has his coverage up at the New Haven Independent.
. Matt Stoller is collecting "Memories of Lieberman" over at MyDD." Before any big Dems show up in Connecticut trying to spread the delusion that this is "all about the war" and that Joe’s a wonderful progressive on every other issue (as Joe told us today at the presser), they might want to familiarize themselves with this rap sheet before they step into the line of fire. Everyone here in Connecticut is amped, and there will most certainly be salvos flying in the direction of anyone so foolish as to show up unprepared.
You can support Ned here.

Leaver-man is pathetic
Your timing is unbelievable, Jane. Thanks for being there for us. Keep it up!
Ooooh, Leaver-man! Brilliant!
Ned! Hang on, we’re coming!
Independent Demo-rat Joseph Leaver-man.
Newtonusr – are you in Massachusetts? We have a Newton, too.
I beg to differ with Charles Schumer. Over at the DailyKos a reader has told the blog that in Connecticut when you run as an independent, you cannot use the name of an existing party in your petition. The DailyKos has the Connecticut statute up for all to read.
He’s a liar and a coward.
“You can run as an independent, you can run as an independent Democrat who pledges to vote for Harry Reid as Majority Leader.”
Schumer is officially a complete and total bastard. I hope we can take him out in 2010.
naschkatze at 8 — I suspect Schumer is well aware of that, and meant “run as” not to mean what appears by his name on the ballot, but what he calls himself in an effort to deceive voters into supporting him. Unfortunately, while it devalues the brand, as far as I know there’s no law against it.
Cannot be said enough…GREAT WORK FDL!
http://www.actblue.com/entity/fundraisers/9354
And everyone else of course…where your vote ‘counts’!
At least this will be this litmus test to show us to what extent the inside-the-beltway Dems are willing to protect their own. It’s pretty fucking bad if they are willing to ignore the will of the electorate and redefine the actual name of the party.
Christy or Jane, could you post the street or box address where I may send another contribution to Lamont? I prefer to work by snail mail rather than e-mail here, but I have printed out the ActBlue donation sheet and will use it. You gave me the address once before, and this time I promise to keep it on hand. Thanks.
Go Ned! Go Jane! Go netroots! Joe has formally quit the party. Their is no “independant democrat” about it. No democrat should show support to such an obvious traitor to the people of the Democratic party. Let’s continue to remind all of our elected officials of that…
B>”It seems like haplessness is just a thing called Joe
He’s got a smile that makes the wingnuts want to grow
He’s got a way makes Klein and Beinart heave a sigh
When they know little Joe’s, passing by
Sometimes the beltway’s gloomy and the Senate’s bare
But then he’ll kiss George W. and it’s Christmas everywhere
Trouble’s fly away and life is easy go
Does he love his ass, that’s all he needs to know
Seems like haplessness, is just a thing called Joe
Little Joe, my little Joe, little Joe!”
Only the Democratic voters get to decide who the “Democratic” candidate is. It’s what they’re there for.
It’s pretty fucking bad if they are willing to ignore the will of the electorate and redefine the actual name of the party.
Been there, said that. You heard it here first, m*****f***ers…
What was it that Sen. Reid said at YKos about “consequences?”
“Paging Senator Ried, Senator Harry Ried, please pick up the white courtesy telephone, Senator Harry Reid.”
Joe L. is one tiresome little putz.
Rats, I hate missing the obvious typos…

Jane, so happy you are there and giving us the truth. I guess Daou’s influence is already having an effect on Hillary….This week Should be very interesting

Captain @ 18,
Great minds and all that, old chap!
He’ll get the signatures, he has the apparatus and republicans will sign with hope to split the ballot.
Jane, your on-the-scene coverage is great!
Eli: “Incumbocrats.”
Brilliant!
Whoa, carsick . . . yer handle makes me woozy.
on my way out the door, but I want to mention this: there was a Ned v. Joe post and thread over at washingtonmonthy.com a few days ago. The comment thread comprised a pretty good “laundry list” of strikes against Joe.
here it is, this time without my mild parenthetical snark about Kevin Drum.
(pssst: Leisure Guy, are you out there? I replied to you on this subject last night.)
Eli at 24, love “Incumbocrats.”
Feel the Joe-pocrisy.
What a patethic show Joe is putting on.
Eli at 3:19. I completely agree.
Ben Nelson from NEBRASKA has problems that Chuck Schumur does not, but I’ll bet that Schumur is almost as “conservative” as Nelson.
As for doing something about Schumer in 2010, that is a long way away, it is just possible Schumer will learn something between now and then and clean up his act.
naschkatze @ 8
Thanks for bringing that over!

It is already in the workings.
John Casper #34:
If you’d like, I think I can dig up the link from the NY Sun (IIRC) about how Sen. Schmuck is the senator from Wall St. So maybe he has his own issues with Ben Nelson syndrome.
I hope the 7500 signatures are part of the public record? I hope Ned’s campaign publishes the names? If they are registered Republicans, that’s very newsworthy.
#23 Franco says: I guess Daou’s influence is already having an effect on Hillary
I was just thinking the same thing. I think a lot of people are starting to understand the netroots are the next generation of political activist. One that cannot be easily swayed or intimidated. Can’t say I’d vote for her (two words: Rupert Murdoch) but it would be nice if a few of our senators got back on track to the will of the people for a change.
Joe is typical of the modern Washington DC insider. Independent Joe only wants to be independent of the Democratic primary voters in Connecticut.
But think about this timing…the debate with Ned is TH night at 7pm. While announcing today is the equivalent of Friday night before Labor Day, it throws out yet something else he has to explain during the debate. What do you think? How does this help for the DEM debate?
Ben Nelson from NEBRASKA has problems that Chuck Schumur does not, but I’ll bet that Schumur is almost as “conservative” as Nelson.
Schumer is in a *blue* state. Just like Joe.
I’m willing to cut a little slack to congresscritters who have to get elected in conservative states, but a Dem who can’t even act like a Dem in a state like NY or CT is a waste of space.
Well, I better get back to meatspace.
Bye, all–it’s been a hoot!!
CNN’s Bill Schneider says Reid, Schumer and Dodd have already declared their support for Leaverman. Wankers.
This is a letter I just sent to Senator Chuck and the DSCC -
I urge you to support the winner of the Connecticut Democratic primary, whether it be Lamont or Lieberman, in the general election. If Joe Lieberman wins, I’m sure you will. But if Lamont wins, I want to make sure that you do what’s right and Democratic, too.
That is, if Ned Lamont wins the primary, I hope that you and the DSCC will do everything in your power – financially, personally, and publicly – to support Ned Lamont in his quest to become Connecticut’s real Democratic Senator.
Sincerely,
P.S. I was Joe Lieberman’s roommate at Yale. I like him as a person. But his continued and vocal support for Bush’s bloody and wrongheaded War on Iraq is unconscionable.
The War on Iraq is a drain on our national treasury and a blot on our international reputation. It has nothing to do with a so-called “war on terror.” Saddam Hussein had nothing to do with 9/11.
If Joe persists in his support of the preemptive and imperial powers of this incompetent Republican President, he will have to answer to his own conscience and, ultimately, to the voters of Connecticut.
That is the path he has freely chosen. If the Democratic voters choose not to follow him and to vote for Ned Lamont, you have a sworn duty to follow the wishes of the Democratic voters of Connecticut. I hope that you and the national Democratic Party will do just that.
It is already in the workings.
Ex-cellent… I think we have some mutual friends who would loooove to help out with that effort.
Franco @ 3:25 pm (#23) The other thing that may be influencing Sen. Clinton is her reception at the Take Back America conference. It was decidedly unfriendly when she started advocating a “stay the course” position on Iraq. I think she just didn’t realize how out of step she was with the rank and file of her party until then.
He can call himself and “independent Democrat” all he wants. CT law though forbids him from using the word “Democrat” on his actual application, and thus in the voter info packet stuff. I don’t have a link for that, but it’s out there somewhere in Blogistan hehe.
Now Mr. Schumer, are you going to continue to support this weasel? We might just come gunning for you in 2010.
“CNN doing Lieberman right now”
Is Wolf Blitzer topping Joe?
-GSD
A victory of Lamont would have huge implications for the ‘08 Presidential election. It would almost certainly mean that no pro-war Democrat would get the nomination. Not good news for Hillary Clinton and other Senators who continue to support the Iraq war.
Jane,
It’s clear that the Iraq-as-the-only-issue meme is the one they’re all going to run with in the traditional media. It’s only going to get worse now that he’s taken out his “insurance policy.”
Gotta shoot down his fake credentials on the other “domestic liberalism” issues.
RevDeb – - from last thread:
TiVo has a new feature where you can recover things you recently deleted.
Go to the bottom of the “Now Playing” list and select the “Recently Deleted” folder.
It will let you restore what you’ve deleted recently.
This has saved my addled bacon several times, now.
GSD 3:37 p.m.
“Is Wolf Blitzer topping Joe?”
No, I think Wolf is on vacation. Bill Schneider did the story, and I would say he more undermined Lieberman than topped him.
As a Coloradan who lived through the Ben Nighthorse Campbell switcheroo, I have a great deal of sympathy for Democratic Senators who are supporting Lieberman.
Ken Salazar is a huge disappointment, but if he jumped to the GOP, it would be a disaster for the Colorado Democrats. We are building for the future, and Latino voters are a big part of that. Of course, none of these considerations are in play in Connecticut, but the sure as hell are in DC.
Another nickname suggestion: Joe Turncoat Lieberman.

Guess Holy Joe is counting on the non-computer literate vote. :)
That WFSB poll?
Lieberman 75
Lamont 1471
neurophius, thanks, that’s bad news if true.
Here’s what CNN said three hours ago:
“Lieberman was on the phone Monday morning informing Senate colleagues, including Minority Leader Harry Reid and fellow Connecticut Democrat Chris Dodd. An announcement was expected Monday afternoon….”
I will be very disappointed if Harry just gives Joe a “blank check.” What is the point of the primaries? Joe has basically told the CT Dems to put their’s where the Sun doesn’t shine. Of course Joe wants Harry, to support him in ignoring the Democratic primaries.
neurophius @ 61
Yeah. Decent piece. Would love to dispel that “war” meme before the debate, though.
Those of you unhappy with Chuck should get thee over to http://www.schumerwatch.blogspot.com/ and leave some comments. Add the blog to your bookmarks. Especially if you happen to be a New Yorker, pressure Chucky!
Joe as an independant? In Depends is more like it.Perhaps his motto should be”oops,I crapped my pants”.If he hasn’t yet he will.
Go Ned!
I’m so heartened to hear Hillary is on the record pledging support for the winner of the primary. She’s actually surprised me this time.
The issue shouldn’t even be on the table, obviously, but it is, so I’m relieved to hear her say it. Things were getting a bit too Kafkaesque for a while there.
Schumer, Boxer, Reid, where are you? Where do you stand!
Forgive me for repeating myself, but:
Senators Schumer, Reid and Dodd:
Are you saying that you will support a candidate who runs AGAINST the duly-elected Democratic nominee?
I’m so heartened to hear Hillary is on the record pledging support for the winner of the primary. She’s actually surprised me this time.
I’m pretty much going to assume that anything worthwhile comes from Peter Daou…
Pach 69 — yeah that Schumer Watch blog was a pretty prescient startup, no?
Am trying to get info on where the DNC stands…their bylaws say they have to support the Democratic candidate I believe, but we’ll see if we can get something a bit more concrete.
Meanwhile, Total Information Awareness is still out there

Am trying to get info on where the DNC stands…their bylaws say they have to support the Democratic candidate I believe, but we’ll see if we can get something a bit more concrete.

I’m pretty much going to assume that anything worthwhile comes from Peter Daou%u2026
Good point. Well, at least she’s smart enough to listen.
Maybe Peter D has directed Hil’s attention to ActBlue this afternoon. Hmmm?
Did Nader run as an Independent Democrat? Or a Petitioning Democrat? What about Ross Perot, who (no matter who his individual voters were) helped Clinton get elected by delegitimizing the conservatism of George Bush Sr?
For that matter, maybe George H. W. Bush was elected as a “Petitioning Democrat.”
Is this like some real term?
Or some made-up crap like I can say that I’m electing myself to Substitute Alternate 5th Dimensional Emperor?
can’t they just let bylaws be lylaws?
OT, Raw Story
Looking forward to eating Pakistani… pomegranates.
there is “support” and also “support”. If (God forbid) Joe should win the primary, I will support him and send him good wishes for success. If Mr. Lamont wins, I’ll send him some cash.
The question is: how enthusiastically will the DSCC support Ned? Cash or best wishes?
egregious, the Cheney Shadow Government is just full of coincidences like that. Of course, there’s still the old saying, “Never ascribe to conspiracy what can be easily explained by incompetence.”
trying to get info on where the DNC stands%u2026
I’m pretty sure Howard Dean has strongly endorsed the winner of the CT Primary — and I think DFA has endorsed Lamont.
A wee bit of tension inside the Beltway?

Acting Patriot 12 – wow, that’s quite a total from net actblue contributions. :) Go NED.
Since Joe thinks it is all about his “principled” stand on the war – I thinke he needs to field his “big point” questions so.
Will he outline the kinds of intelligence and information reviews he is demanding from the Administration during the progress to insure that Congress doesn’t go down the “WMD” misformation path again?
Just how often has Rice gone and given them the big insightful closed doors update with Q & A? ;-)
Has the President, his pal, given him any assurances that the information being given to Congress is not “selective declassification” and does Congress have any effective oversight to make sure it is not receiving selective, pro=Admin cherry picked inof?
Just what is Lieberman’s plan for Iraq?
How much will Lieberman’s plan for Iraq cost? How many lives, how much $$$
Why isn’t Leiberman out looking for the missing 9 Bill – does he have someone else doing it?
Why hasn’t Leiberman demanded that the adminsitration turn over Katrina docs – is Collins incompetent or just corrup by not subpeonaing them?
The point Dale Peters raised about experimental drugging of soldier with PTSD and sendig them back to Iraq on drugs that slow response times & why does Cher have more social conscience for the fates of our solidiers than Bush or — Leiberman? Gypsy – meet tramps and thieves.
Is Leiberman going to support the Sup. Court’s ruling and the rule of law to the fullest extent to make sure that America and its military comply with Geneva conventions and with trial rules that secure the use of valid information – and not the President’s “gut” – to proceed with charges at GITMO?
Gosh – He’d be lucky if Leiberman’s War (since he has a sense of vested interest in it) were his only questions. Too bad for him they are only the tip of the iceberg.
OT – http://tinyurl.com/zcas5
Article on how the application of the Geneva Conventions was “the worst” that could have happened from the GOP’s perspective — and Leiberman’s too it would seem.
While the article focuses on the GOP’s “bad Sup. Ct. – Ct’s should be seen and not heard!” theme, the reporter does get around to squeezing this bit in:
In an election year, declaring that international law governs the war on terror reminds voters of some of the Republican administration’s lowest moments: controversies over Justice Department “torture” memos and allegations of abuse against detainees at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.
Attaboy Joe – you too can claim a share in “some of the Republican administration’s lowest moments.”
P.S. I was Joe Lieberman’s roommate at Yale. I like him as a person. But his continued and vocal support for Bush’s bloody and wrongheaded War on Iraq is unconscionable.
radlib1 –
This is true? Well, not that I’m doubting your word, it’s just that it’s a great thing to see that being someone’s roommate in college does not necessarily mean a “free pass” for one’s pal forever after.
[My roommate in college was in AF ROTC, and she had up her CREEP pro-Nixon poster, while I had my McGovern signs on my half of the room. She laughed at me when Nixon won, but then of course I had the last laugh the day he resigned.]
My apologies if you discussed this elsewhere; I hate making folks feel they have to repeat themselves. But life has been tough recently, and it’s kept me away from FDL for a while. Sadly for me! So I easily could have missed a prior comment of yours.
What did Joe major in at school?
Blogwhoring for TeddySanFran so he doesn’t have to. Good place to tell Harry Reid what you think about Indie Joe.
Technically, I believe that would be “blogpimping”.
And it ain’t easy.
egregious @ 76
Weren’t there several Dem political office’s laptops and hard drives stolen around the time of both of the last presidential campaigns? I heard about Dem computers being stolen, and campaign headquarters being broken into, but nothing like that being talked about concerning the GOP…
Some questions for Jumpin’ Joe:
Independent? Independent of what? The will of the voters?
You respected the will of the primary voters in 2004, and dropped out after primary voters made it clear you were not their choice. Why has your position changed? Why do you no longer respect the will of your party’s primary voters?
Do you no longer support the primary system? Why not?
Will you support other Senate candidates who win their primaries, or will you only support candidates who do not win their own primaries?
In the 2000 presidential race, you argued that only the two major party nominees should be included in debates. Do you expect to be in the Senate general election debates, or should they only be between the nominees of the two major parties?
If you do not win the primary, to win in the general election, you will need CT Republicans to vote for you rather than the nominee of their own party. Why should they do that?
Since I haven’t been around, I’m betting someone else came up with this phrase already, but here goes anyhoo:
“NO MO JOE!!!“
I just copy pasted from Jane, and the three dots ’smart quote’ thingy translated it to %u2026.
I actually delete those when I see them, and manually replace them with three periods so they’ll get re-smartquoted.
I don’t think they need to turn it off, just adjust their code so they recognize them when they come back at them.
Eli:
It’s hard out there.
TeddySanFran is getting some good comments on his GiveEmHellHarry blog, and I have received a couple on mine. Tell the Senate Democratic Minority Leader where we stand on Leaverman’s defection from the Democratic Party. Here’s my blog:

How do telegrams work these days? [Somebody said that Western Union has gotten out of the telegram business recently — who sends telegrams? Or have they gone the way of the horse and buggy?]
I ask, because I’d love to know it might be possible to send a message to someone (for instance, Lieberman), knowing for certain that the person (famous or not) will actually read it with his own eyeballs.
Would love to send Lieberman a telegram that says: “Why do you despise the democratic wishes of the Democratic citizens of Connecticut? Why do you hate democracy?”
Did the Republicans continue to support Senator Jeffords’ campaigns after he went Independent? Oh.
Hey, Jane, did you see that screen capture on C&L’s page? It looks an awful lot like Afred E. Newman. Don’t you think with a little photoshop magic it would be a great lead-in photo?

Accommodating them would be ideal. But I agree, if that’s too much work, just shut them off. The value-added is minimal.
Hey Leslie! Big hugs to you! Thanks for you kind thoughts, and hope the 4th is a great day for you and your family. A celebration of the ideals you/we hold dear.
I downloaded a copy of the Declaration of Independence today to print out and read aloud in our household tomorrow.
but doesnt Pakistan need 36 F-16s to track down and find a tall, skinny bearded dude on a dialysis machine?
Mary @ 107
Yes, Russ is the only one I’ve heard make mention. But Somalia needs TOW Anti-Tank missiles and Strella S.A.M.s more – no pilots! Interesting times, indeed.

Whew. Dogs are pooped. They had two press conferences today. It’s hard out there for a poodle.
Oooh, Leslie! Suzanne says it’s your birthday! When? Today or is it tomorrow? “Born on the Fourth of July”?
Happy, happy birthday, Lady! You are always such a bright, thoughtful, kind and supportive commenter, with smart things to say. Here’s hoping it’s a MOST wonderful birthday for you, spent doing the things you love the most together with the people you love the most.
Whatever happened to the *nn C**lt*r story? Is the MSM ignoring it?

doesnt Pakistan need 36 F-16s to track down and find a tall, skinny bearded dude on a dialysis machine?
No, they need them to protect the Islamo-bomb — the centerpiece of the Islamic Republic Of Pakistan national defense.
The IROP will be another one of those “no-one-could-have-imagined” outcomes from the Commander Codpiece attack on Iran.
General Gardiner now puts the odds of the BushCo crazies attacking Iran before November at 40% — I think that is about right, but it was closer to 80% two months ago.
Steve Soto interviews General Gardiner, about the latest Sy Hersh expose. A very good read, btw:

No, they need them to protect the Islamo-bomb %u2014 the centerpiece of the Islamic Republic Of Pakistan national defense.
Sure, F-16s will be really helpful against an Islamist mass revolution…
*ilson, I believe they need them because Sec of State Rice is convinced no one is safe to drink coffee again with a few F-16s.
Now let’s just hope when they send the President up for his Press Op flight he really has learned that “Pakistan and India are two different countries” lesson. Especially when he realizes that from the cockpit, they aren’t really colored pink and yellow.
neuro – it really does make you shake your head. OTOH, I guess since Musharef is holding those Democratic elections like Iraq and all . . .

Nah, he’d just cancel the general election and stay in office.
Joe is probably envious.

Suzanne and Mrs. K8, thanks! Today is the actual day – and tomorrow is my mom’s birthday, in fact. She always called me her favorite birthday present. *g* As I said in the previous thread, you all here at FDL are one of the things I’m grateful for today – and tomorrow. I think reading the Declaration aloud is a great idea.
John King is pushing Joe. “You say as a petitioning Democratic candidate, but you know you would appear on the ballot as an independent”
If there was a Miss Poly-Triangulation contest, Senator Clinton would win hands down. Hillary is worse than Lieberman. Because she has a good chance of locking-up the nomination for 2008. And she has all those mountains of money. Clinton is a gas bag. Albeit, a clever one. I’ve been voting Democratic for almost forty years. Hillary is the worst Democrat I’ve seen. And it’s just killing me to know I may be forced to vote for her. And the DLC makes me gag. I’m pissed.

Joe is just itching to play the anti-Semite card. Don’t give him an excuse, like this, from Atrios’s comments board: “Joe is loyal to his party — the Likud.”
It won’t take much of that sort of thing to permit the MSM to make us (progressives) out to be Nazis.

According to the screen grab at Jesus General Ned had raised $245,593.99 thru ActBlue as of Sat. morning (that’s when the screen grab was posted.)
As of now, Ned has $252,311.88. He’s raised nearly seven grand, online, on a holiday weekend. That seems impressive to me.

I really like your thoughts on using “Cut ‘n Run Joe.” I agree with the tactic completely.
[Of course my favorite crowd chant is still:
NO MO JOE!, but I’m sure “Cut ‘n Run Joe” would work well as a chant, too.]
But in anything written, I think your phrase should ALWAYS be used, and for the reasons you give. It will definitely dilute the meaning of the phrase as a slur against progressives, and that’s a good thing.
“Sources say that Hillary”
Oh please. I read enough blind quotes in the dead-tree media.
And it creates confusion. Jenny from the blog above seemed to think Hillary was on the record, but as far I know, that’s not true.
Is the roadway sign on MyLeftNutmeg’s site real or is it photoshopped?? It says:

Yeah, it’s true. I was Joe’s roommate at Yale. We were both the first in our families to go to college. Both of us had working-class parents (his father owned a liquor store in Stamford, my father sold Cornwell Quality Tools in Pittsburgh). Around Yale, even then, it was obvious that Joe was going places politically. His nickname to some was “Senator” and, while we were still in college, I predicted he could become the first Jewish President. (Came close too, whew.)
We were friends and have remained “friendly” over the years (which amounted to exchanging holiday cards and occasional phone calls) even though we’ve lived on opposite sides of the continent. Appropriately enough, I moved to the Left Coast (California) after college.
We remained in touch after he was elected to the Senate. He even credited me and his daughter for changing his vote over Clarence Thomas. Unfortunately, since then, he hasn’t listened or paid much heed to my wise, if blunt, counsel on Abu Gonzales or “Scalito” or the War on Iraq or much of anything. I doubt that I will be hearing back from him now.
Still, I’d rather lose a friend than stand by and watch him sell out our country and our Constitution to an imperialist, wannabe monarch and warmonger.

God bless you, radlib, on this holiday celebrating the Declaration of Independence. A big virtual hug to you from me! I love true patriots. And Thomas Paine would be proud of your sentiment.
radlib1 : the fact that Cut ‘n’ Run Joe was even considering voting for Clarence Thomas should have been a warning to everybody !
…so is Harry Reid playing straight with us, or is this another political shell game? We know Shumer is a slug, but what’s up with Reid? His cryptic comments at YKos don’t satisfy very much, or infer anything specific for that matter. Are we just being leveraged by the insiders?
One quarter of the seats in the Pakistani Parliament are controlled by the former head of the ISI, Hamid Gul. These seats represent one half of the territory of Pakistan. The head of the ISI wired $100k to Mohammed Atta shortly before the attacks.
And that 9/11 thingy? Osama and Al Qaeda were subcontractors, hired by the ISI to carry out the ISI’s plan. In fact, the only country in the Middle East that had nothing to do with 9/11 is Iraq.

Joe has a lousy voting record as a Democrat now.
Actually, Holy Joe’s voting record is pretty good; but his record of stabbing the Democratic Party in the back at every opportunity is an almost perfect 100%.
The DSCC gets my two cents:
Democratic party officials and spokespeople have long maintained that the only responsible and unifying course for progressive office seekers to take is to compete in Democratic primaries and to avoid splitting the progressive vote by becoming or by supporting third party candidates. Even in those elections that offer a third party candidate who better represents a voter’s interests and views, the argument holds, joining together to support whoever wins the Democratic primary is the necessary path to exercising real political power.
In fact, Democrats have not only urged progressive voters to keep our differences within the party Democrats have excoriated other progressives for running third party campaigns. If the very party leaders and politicians who have savaged otherwise progressive third party candidates fail to hold Senator Lieberman accountable for abandoning his commitment to the party and the decision of its voters they will have squandered the party’s best argument for progressive unity within the Democratic Party. If they even tacitly support Lieberman’s announced willingness to make a third party run some very prominent Democrats are going to owe Ralph Nader an apology.

My favorite part of that song is the “Ban Joe” solo.
Does Cheney have any kind of “official” status in the CIA Leak Case? I know he’s never been named as a “target”, but what about anything else? “Person of interest”? It seems to me his name has been absent from the pages in this regard, and it’s been a long time already.
Note what Paul Bass says about Joe in his article (see Jane’s link in the post):
“who has come under fire for siding with Republicans on the Iraq war, tax policy, civil liberties, the right to question the president, health care, the recently passed energy bill, and the nominations of right-wing presidential appointees like Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez and Supreme Court nominees John Robers and Samuel Alito. “I will stay a Democrat.”"

Robbie – very solid and important comment in your letter to the DSCC.
I’ve been wondering all day … we get a lot of flack for considering leaving the dems for a third party but with Joe’s move and *if* Reid/Schumer/etc support him – it looks like they are leaving the Dem party to us – I say we ask for the keys to the offices and get to work.
The Very Rev. Michael Sellers, Anglican priest, coordinator of Jerusalm’s Christian churches says today… “support for the Christian presence in the Holy Land will best be served by helping to remove the separation wall (which has converted all the Palestinian towns into big prisons for Christians and Muslims alike) and by helping to bring occupation to an end with all its inherent types of oppression and humiliation.” (source: Chicago Sun-Times, July, 3, 2006)

Is there a joke hidden in “L Warren” that I’m not getting?
Jane, what is your sense of the amount of interest on the part of Connecticuttians in Thursday’s debate? And can you tell if Joe-netia’s announcement increased interest a lot? That would be a real kick in the ass for Joe if he gets everyone tuned into a debate that could lose him the primary AND the general both.
I wonder if Countdown will be live tonight
1,200 DAYS AND THE KILLING GOES ON AND ON AND…
Let’s all thank ol’ Joe for turnin’ the lights on our recent political history and current political condittion. With his weaseling, equivocating and outright lying and his threat to leave the Democratic Party to run as a “real Democrat”, Joe draws attention to his own history and how he got to be the strongest Republicrat in Congress. Let us remember that the extreme right wing REPUBLICANS thru the National Review and AIPAC, ran Joe at a time that the Democratic Party was torn assunder by the ascendence of Ronnie Reagan and his “Reagan Democrats”. Joe was the fascists Manchurian Candidate who was cleverly installed by the old Nixon-Joe McCarthy mob who wanted ta punish Lowell Wicker for his apostacy and, more importantly, stop the rise of a moderate alternative to the fascist wing of the Republican Party. Joe not only succeeded in beating Wicker with rightwing REPUBLICAN money but he was installed as the main corporate Quissling in the concerted effort by the rightwing corporatists to take over control of the DC establishment of the Democratic Party.
Joe’s position as “moderate”, Jewish, east coast Senator served the party in that he not only delivered Connecticut but he held the power of the Jewish vote behind him and helped hold it nationally for Democrats while fronting for Republican foriegn policy and corporate oil interests.
Now, his ability to demand fielty from the elected Democratic leadership (or a good portion of it)helps us to identify jest where and how deeply entrenched the corporate toadies are…trust me, if Lamont beats Lieberman in the primary, Lieberman doesn’t stand a snowball’s chance in a hot place of winnin’ a 3-way race without the lable of “Democrat” by his line on the ballot… and the Democratic establishment knows it. Schumer will never be able to give ol’ Joe a dime of Democratic Party money as an independent and Lamont doesn’t need the party money in the general election.
A Lamont victory, then, will advance the progressive assault on the Democratic leadership into the “red zone”…Lamont wins and there will be new leadership around in both the House and Senate (maybe not in the 2 leaders but ceratinly in the next tier down)if the Democrats take either house. If the Dems take the Senate, Schumer will be able ta smell Feingold’s breath…
So let’s give ol’ Joe a hearty “Thanks Joe” for bein’ such a visable, weak, lyin’ sack of camel manure…makes Lamont’s job much easier.
KEEP THE FAITH AND CHOSE YER TARGETS CAREFULLY, THEY’LL BE COMIN FROM EVERYWHERE!!

You’re absolutely right. Now I think that Joe was just waiting to see if Thomas had enough votes before he voted against him. Much like he voted for cloture on Alito, then recorded a “NO” vote when the deed was already done.
Last year, he did the same thing with Social Security. He supported Bush’s privatization scheme before he opposed it. I’m not sure, but I think he also voted with the credit-card industry and against poor people on the Bankruptcy Bill. Anyone know the facts on this?

I just can’t buy into this. A significant number of laptops will end up being stolen. I think the actual figure is between 5% and 10%. It’s really not surprising that some of them have huge databases on them. It seems far more likely to me that these are random thefts as opposed to directed efforts at datamining. Why bother stealing the info when you can just call up AT&T and ask the for it?
Good question, neurophius!
And will it be Keith, or his stand-in? [What’s the guy’s name? Is it Brian something?]

Joe Talking Points:
1. He’s CUT AND RUN from the Democratic party.
2. He’s FLIP-FLOPPED on being a Democrat.
3. He’s Bush’s favorite Democrat.
You know, I’m starting to think the Bush and Lieberman cling to each other in the hopes of getting a boost from the other’s approval ratings. Newsflash: Most of America wants a plan–it doesn’t even have to be a good one–to get the hell out of Iraq. If you persist in claiming that we’re not leaving until we’re “done”, at least tell us what you mean by “done”. A McDonald’s on every corner? A church next to every mosque? What, exactly, will it take for you to decide that it’s finally time to leave? Remember, you can’t say “Capture Saddam” or “Rid Iraq of WMDs” or “Establish a democratic government”, since we’ve accomplished all of those already. And if you say we won’t leave until Iraq is “stable”, you must likewise define the term. How many car-bombs a day is “stable”?
op99 — have only been here a couple of days so it’s hard to measure the feelings of the “average” Connecticut person. I can tell you there’s LOTS of interest on the part of people I talk to, but I’m talking to all the local bloggers, political journalists and Lamont supporters. Hardly average. I’m going to be there and I’m really looking forward to it, and I’m lucky to be going with the fabulous Paul Bass. Colin McEnroe is out of town right now but he’ll be back on Thursday I believe so hopefully I’ll see him there, too. The level of intelligence, insight and interity on the part of the local journalists is remarkable and in large part responsible for Lieberman being unsuccessful in putting over his disinformation campaign. It’s quite inspirational.

I’m hoping that Joe splits the Republican vote as much as the Democratic one, if not more.
Or just fails miserably and gets like 10%, and retires a humiliated and broken man.
If Leaverman indeed runs as an independent, I wonder to what extent the GOP will help with his campaign? I would think that the Republicans will make the calculation that their nominee doesn’t have any chance of winning the Senate seat, so they might as well back Holy Joe so as to thwart the candidacy of a progressive like Lamont.
That quote about “Lieber-Youth” — is Boltin’-Joe bugging out because there’s not enough “Lieber-Straum” in the Democratic Party?
Or is that too bad to say?
Let’s play Find the Principled Democrat!
On Tilting the Supreme Court Far to the Right: “The spirit was very unified in the meeting. I think every one of the 14 of us feels that our membership and participation in the so-called gang of 14 is one of the best things we’ve done in the Senate ever, because we cut across party lines to deal with the national interest, what’s right for the country, and it’s something critically important, and that is nomination and confirmation of justices to the Supreme Court.”
On Censorship: “Well, I was just going to say the word that Bill [Bennett] used. We’ve been trying for four or five years to shame the leaders of the entertainment industry, to say, ‘Look, draw a line. Won’t you please decide that going over that line can make you a few more dollars but it’s just not worth it because it’s harmful to our children and our whole society.’ I’ll tell you about those lyrics. They come-and the game Doom. You know, in almost every one of these school yard killings, Tim, the kids have either been focused on Marilyn Manson, ‘Natural Born Killers,’ ‘Basketball Diaries,’ or ‘Doom and Quake.’ This is no accident. We’re coming dangerously close in the entertainment industry, much as we prize our liberties, to the point where they’re going to invite legal restrictions on their freedom because they’re beginning to yell “fire” in a crowded theater when there is no fire and they’re going to be held accountable.”
On Rape Victims Denied Birth Control: “In Connecticut, it shouldn’t take more than a short ride to get to another hospital.”
On Social Security: “This is an ongoing problem, and we’d be wise to deal with it… If we can figure out a way to help people through private accounts or something else, great.”
On the Separation of Church and State: “Thank you, Mr. President. Thanks for your leadership on this, and thanks to Senator Santorum and all our colleagues and our staffs that worked very hard on this. I have always believed that faith, right from the beginning of this country, was one of the great unifiers of the American people. And faith has been strong enough to unify all of us as we went forward to find a constitutionally appropriate way to have a faith-based initiative, to help people who want to do good works and whose desire to do good works is motivated by their faith.”
On Bill Clinton’s Morality: “I have chosen to speak particularly at this time before the independent counsel files his report because, while we do not know enough yet to answer the question of whether there are legal consequences of the President’s conduct, we do know enough from what the President acknowledged on August 17 to answer a separate and distinct set of questions about the moral consequences for our country. Mr. President, I have come to this floor many times in the past to speak with my colleagues about the concerns which are so widely shared in this Chamber and throughout the Nation that our society’s standards are sinking; that our common moral code is deteriorating and that our public life is coarsening.”
On 42 Minutes of Congressional Oversight: “I am glad the President has nominated someone already familiar with FEMA’s mission to become Deputy Director. Mr. Brown, I thank you very much. I will certainly support your nomination. I will do my best to move it through the committee as soon as possible so we can have you fully and legally at work in your new position.”
On Congressional Oversight during War: “In matters of war, we undermine presidential credibility at our nation’s peril.”
On Undermining Presidential Credibility when You, Yourself, are a Candidate: “In our democracy, a president does not rule, he governs. He remains always answerable to us, the people. And right now, the president’s conduct of our foreign policy is giving the country too many reasons to question his leadership. It’s not just about 16 words in a speech, it is about distorting intelligence and diminishing credibility.”
Maybe they’ll just concentrate on smearing Lamont. I expect they’re confident of retaining their Senate majority, so it wouldn’t really matter to them which Republican got elected.
“So, do we have a pool going as to when the future former senator calls Ned an anti-Semite?”

“Lieber-Youth” is indeed a cringe-making name …
On at least two different levels, if “Lieber” means what I think it means…
They were not, in fact, calling themselves Lieber-Youth, were they? That’s not an officially sanctioned Lieberman campaign term, is it? Please tell me it’s not.
Regarding Lamont. I hope he beats the crap outta Joe. However, I’d like to know about Lamont’s prescription, if any, for solving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. I posed this question to Ct. Bob’s blog and got no response, except from a few commenters that said since this was a sticky question, I basically shouldn’t be asking it. Well, even though that’s not a very satisfactory answer, hopefully Lamont will triumph. But I’d still like to know if Lamont would treat that situation differently than Lieberman has. There will be no peace in the world, until the Israeli-Plaestinian debacle if is fixed. I think.
Robbie @ 167: Nicely put.
Regarding the possibility that Hillary will endorse whomever is the Dem. nominee in CT: Hillary & Schumer don’t get along. This is a chance for her to throw a bone to the netroots AND to give ol’ Chuckie a poke in the eye. Still triangulating all the way tho. Schumer and Emmanuel sure come off like schoolyard bullies.
By the way, it bears pointing out that if elected, Lamont will support the Dem leadership in the Senate too. No need to vote for an “independent Democrat” to win the seat for the Dems.
Matt Stoller thinks Lieberman is smart like a fox, for announcing this decision today.
I think he’s dumber than a box of rocks, and getting dumber by the minute.

When we got to the capital there was a team of fresh-scrubbed young people in Lieberman t-shirts with Lieberman signs who locals have been referring to as the “Lieber-Youth.” (I asked two of them later if they were paid or volunteers %u2014 one robotically said “oh we’re volunteers” but the other rolled her eyes and shrugged in response. It was pretty clear %u2014 unlike Ned’s campaign, which is full of enthusiastic volunteers, Joe’s “supporters” have the meter on.) — Jane’s previous post today…
it looks like the Lieber-Folks dont call them that …

I think Rove is LOVING this. He gets to watch the former Vice-Presidential candidate%u2013on the ticket that beat Bush%u2013go down in flames.
He’d much rather have Joe than Ned, tho.
———————————————————-
I doubt it. Joe has been a useful idiot for Rove, but not useful enough that he cares two farts about him. The seat is going to stay Democratic, and Rove’s concern is keeping the Senate in Republican hands. I can’t see Joe being the swing vote to block any sort of Democratic investigation if the Senate goes 51-49 for the Dems.
Constitutional Crisis Question: What happens if the Senate splits 50-50, and Cheney–who is supposed to break all ties–drops dead of a heart attack?
John K 227, Hillary & Schumer don’t get along. Source please? First Lady Hillary was a big backer and fundraiser for Schumer’s 1998 Senate bid, I don’t remember about 2004, but he was a shoo-in by then.

Better a useful idiot than an actual Dem.
And yes, I absolutely *can* see Joe voting against investigations. In fact, I *expect* it.
Lieberman won’t accuse Lamont of anti-Semitism directly; he’ll find some comment in a pro-Lamont blog, blow it out of proportion, and demand that Lamont disassociate himself from the blog, all blogs that link to it, etc., etc.
Eli, if lieber is a German word, and it kinda looks like it is, this is what it means:
lieber:
Adjektiv: (Komparativ) dearer
Adverb: 1. (eher) rather 2. (besser) better
a tie loses the vote. GWB would have an incentive to quickly submit for nomination an interim Veep that could pass Senate confirmation …

It’s a well-known fact that bears hate Jews. Pass it on!
OT: The new Murray Waas piece.
And the last piece falls into place. So here’s the narrative:
W tells Cheney to do anything he wants to smear Wilson. Cheney tells Libby (and maybe Rove) to betray Plame. Libby blows Plame’s cover to JudyJudyJudy and Bob Novak. (Still not sure where Woodward fits in.) Fast foward to 2004, when Fitz is interviewing W, and Georgie whines, “Well, when I said ‘anything’, I didn’t mean THAT!” See? The whole thing was just a big miscommunication! “Our bad! We spent three years covering it up so that the American public wouldn’t have to worry their pretty little heads about it!”
How am I doing?
Eli, if lieber is a German word, and it kinda looks like it is, this is what it means:

Oh good. Most of my German comes from The Producers…
Can any CT Dem be a “petitioning Democrat?”
I wonder how many Dems can get on the ballot with Joe.
What bothers me is the lack of logic in the DSCC not supporting the primary winner.
I don’t for a minute believe that Schumer, Reid, Boxer, etc all are pledging a personal allegiance to Lieberman. They must have forecast some post-election scenario in which Lieberman’s support will be critical. I don’t know what it is, but I suspect it is as Jane says — in the works for a quite some time.
Frank Probst @ 5:37 pm (#238) – How am I doing?
OK. Here’s another possibility.
forgive me if this has already been addressed:
Why are they even having a Dem primary now? What’s the point? Why not call it off and save a lot of time, trouble and expense?
If you grant what Jr. told Fitz was the truth (maybe, maybe not) there is this interesting timeframe when OVP is feeding Jr. the talking point “Plame’s status was an open secret in DC”.
Then at some point DoJ/OSC makes clear to Jr. that dog won’t hunt.
And yet nobody is forced out till Libby’s indictment.
Hmmm…
Make no mistake about it, netroots support played a big hand in taking down Lieberman, and Schumer is making a big mistake by getting out in front of a doomed “Let’s save poor ol’ Joe” movement.
Read ‘em and weep, Chuck. Lieberman is done. Cooked. The guy has been exposed, and this “Independent Democrat” schtick is gonna soar just like the primary campaign did, ie like an iron balloon.
Chuck Schumer better get a clue or else the Lieberman campaign will offer a glimpse at his own political future.
Why are they even having a Dem primary now? What’s the point? Why not call it off and save a lot of time, trouble and expense?
We should just return to the good old days when the party machine chose the candidates. Voters are too stupid.
if you’ve got a Republican candidate, a Dem. candidate, an Independent candidate (and any number of extra curricular candidates), just have an election. There’s no need for a primary.

Thanks much. I found the undelete and am making a DVD so as not to lost it.
Been a crazy day working with my new RootsProject friends with 2 power outages in the middle of it. Not to mention all of the great news! Joenertia and the Bushbot both in one day!
Bubbly with dinner . . . good dinner, good day.
Evening. Well, well. Interesting news. My scattered thoughts:
1. Actually, and unfortunately, I now think this is a brilliant move on Lieberman’s part. Between now and 08/08, Lamont has to run like a thoroughbred at Churchill Downs just for a chance to win. Lamont can’t let up. Lamont has to spend money, make a whirlwind of appearances, and generally operate at breakneck speed. And Lieberman? He can now stroll. He can save some money. AND, Lieberman can court Democrats, independents, AND Republicans! For, Lieberman declares that come hell or high water, he’s running in November. Lieberman wants to put together his own triangulation….some Democrats, some indies, and some R teamers. Could be a potent cocktail!
2. Has HILLARY HERSELF been quoted by a reputable news service as saying she’ll support whoever wins the primary? Or is this just more Hillary bullshit, where she spreads rumors but never bellies up to the bar?
3. And….I don’t really have any problem with selling the Paks some F-16s. Hell, they’re not gonna launch an invasion of the USA. Let them have their planes, and pay us the money for them.
I can’t remember if Joe is the head of the Democratic party in Conn. or just the heavyweight, but he should get bounced for even starting the signature gathering process. He is either a Democrat and should get the benefits of that association or he is not a Democrat and he should be cut off from the party.
Right now, he is act like he is not a Democrat and he should be shown the door and assisted out of it by someone’s size 12 brogans.
GET THIS!!!
raw story is telling us the new york times is going to take liebernan off of the lead
HAR, we DO make a differnace
Thinking about Lieberman and his hubris and the way his head must be spinning in disbelief at this turn of events, this comes to mind:
“The mighty Casey has struck out”.
I’m not a big proponent of schadenfreude generally, because it’s a soul killer, but man oh man, when Mighty Joe strikes out I want a front row seat.
Nice collection of Joe’s Greatest Hits at 221, DoverB.
Another fdl contest?
about those F16s Pakistan is acquiring from the USA — $ 3 billion worth — how are they paying for them? with what? pomegranates?
Joebody knows the trouble he’s in. Ha Ha it seems to me that Cut n Run JOe has crawled down the “spider hole” of his own smug know nothingness. It’s Nedtastic!
“The mighty Casey has struck out”.
Actually, I think he has a 15-point lead on Santorum.
Not that he’ll be much better than Lieberman…
oh, well, wilson, my non-opposition is predicated on them PAYING us. Now…you ask, how? With what? Fair question. Hmmm…I don’t believe there’s any oil over there…..well, they do have a pretty good economy. I’ll guess they pay it in installments, just like we pay on credit cards.

Eli, your comment just confused me. :)
Eli, your comment just confused me. :)
Bob Casey Jr.? Democratic senatorial candidate in PA? Pro-choice and just slightly to the left of Joementum? A Chuck Schumer-Ed Rendell joint production?

Front PAGE NYT Tomorrow!
Dig: a half-dozen CT Dems get signatures and get on the general ballot as independent “petitioning Dems.” If Schmuck Amuck only supports Joe, they sue the living snot out of him and his DSCC. Or else, he has to divvy up the resources and dilute what he was gonna divert to Joe.
I don’t know whether this has been posted here, but I haven’t seen it here:
Moveon.org says Leaverman’s decision to consider an independent candidacy “reeks of arrogance.”

Maybe I’ll move to CT and change my name to Joe Lie-Berman. “Scoot” over, Schmuckles, there’s a new sheriff in town!

I was quoting from “Casey at the Bat” an old poem.
al-Scooter at 6:38 p.m.
I don’t believe that the DSCC has any legal duty to give money to all independent candidates, to any independent candidate, or to any Democrat for that matter. I don’t think there is a basis for the type of suit you suggest.
Rats. I coulda been a contenda. I coulda had klass!
a half-dozen CT Dems get signatures and get on the general ballot as independent “petitioning Dems.”
Uhhh . . . not quite. If a candidate fails to get 15% at the assembly, they can petition onto the primary ballot as “petitioning Dems.”
If there was no one nominated for a seat at an assembly, they could petition onto the general ballot (I think).
But in this case, Joe-nertia is petitioning onto the ballot as an Independent.
Hillary has gotten her sweet revenge for Joe’s attach on Bill. Sweet…
IMHO it’s like this:
Internal polling tells the guys running the Lieberman campaign that Joementum is in big trouble. They give the boss the bad news.
Lieberman makes this announcement knowing full well that it weighs down his already sinking primary campaign in a major way. In fact it’s an act of political desperation, and practically the last thing poor Joe would’ve wanted to do. Now he’ll be running from behind from here on out, and on the defensive to Lamont, and trying to spin and justify to Democrat donors and voters why they should support him, even though he has “higher priorities” than the party.
Bottom line: The momentum in this campaign has totally shifted and only a major mistake by Lamont will keep him from rolling to a big win over Lieberman in August.
OK, so in that scenario Lamont kicks Joe’s ass and Joe immediately files to get on the ballot as some kind of independent. But keep in mind, Connecticut is extremely blue. Forget about “vote splitting”. Lieberman or no Lieberman, there’s no way a Republican can win the US Senate election, at least not without the help of the Diebold Corporation.
So in November it’ll be down to Ned Lamont, an extremely able, attractive, well financed candidate coming off a huge upset win in the primary, with a big influx of donations and even more netroots support, versus well, why not just say it, Sore Loserman.
Sure, a few Republicans will try to pump up Joe’s campaign (why not, he’s Bush’s favorite “Democrat”) but on the other hand, quite a few rats will have jumped off the Lieberman ship by then as well.
Final point. What Lieberman obviously doesn’t get is that a big part of whatever appeal he does have in Connecticut is due to the fact that he gets to have the capital letter “D” next to his name. Many Connecticut voters have tolerated his stance on Iraq, abortion, etc because he’s (supposedly) a Democrat. Strip that away and he’s not much more than just another guy running.
And as I understand it, Joe’s spin that he’ll be running as an “Independent Democrat” is crap. By Connecticut campaign law he can’t use the word Democrat or anything like that on the ballot, and he also can’t run without party affiliation.
Put it all together and that spells “longshot”. Or as Walter Matthau said in the film JFK, “that dog don’t hunt”
At some point DNC bigwigs, the Chuck Shumers of the world, and even the big corporate donors who have been propping Lieberman up all this time are gonna see the writing on the wall. Joementum’s chances are now down to slim to none. Hillary Clinton get’s it, and her announcement that she’ll support “the winner of the Democratic primary” (read: Ned Lamont) is the wave of the future.
Lamont IS going to be the Democratic Party nominee and the odds are he WILL be elected as the next US Senator from Connecticut. And the progressive netroots movement is officially a force to be reckoned with. Deal with it.
So many comments, and haven’t had time to read everything from this and the previous two posts, so forgive me if this has already been said…
Now it’s official – the Lieberbaby campaign must believe it is in serious danger of losing in the primary for it to start collecting signatures now.
I hope this is addressed in the debate on Thursday – would love to hear Ned confront Joe about what it means to be an “independent Democrat.” Would love for Ned to just ask Joe why he isn’t running as the Republican that his views are representative of. Would love for Ned to ask Joe what he thinks it means if he can’t win the Democratic primary – isn’t that an indication that the Democrats and Independents of Connecticut do not see Joe as representative of their values?
I think Kobe should sit next to Ned at the podium on Thursday, and just stare down Lieberbaby throughout the debate. *g*
1,200 DAYS AND THE KILLING GOES ON AND ON AND…
Come on folks, it’s very simple: every support from here on out of an elected Democrat for ol’ Joe and any elected Democrat who even hints at support for an “independent” Lieberman effort, exposes a Republicrat or corporate lacky. Schumer knows that his days as a mover and shaker with control of the paltry few millions that the Senate Dems control are numbered if Lieberman loses and the progressives take control of the party or if the Democratic Party wins one or both houses of congress.
This is why the real battle is NOT in November but right here from now until the last primaries in September. Power within the elected Democratic structure will change if the Dems win even jest one of the houses of congress. The current leadership is tryin’ everythin in it’s power to get enough “margarine Democrats” nominated so that they can hope to hold on to their committee leadership roles and party offices.
And this is the only thing of which I am afraid: Schumer and Emmanuel are fully capable of sabatogin’ a Democratic victory in November in order to maintain their hold on the Democratic Party leadership and their access to AIPAC millions.
KEEP THE FAITH AND THE LIGHTS ON…THE BASTARDS KEN ONLY WORK IN THE DARK!!!
If only it were possible to donate $100 to ActBlue, and direct $99.99 of it to Ned and the other penny to Joe… you know, the way that when you get *really* bad service in a diner you don’t leave no tip at all, you leave a quarter as a message….
BB
Breadbox, that’s a good idea. Maybe I’ll donate one cent to the DSCC. Start a “Pennies for Lieberman” fund.
Breadbox, that is a fine concept. Let’s work on the details, and develop it into an idea.
If I can donate a penny to Schumer, as a “take this poke in the eye, you FAUX democrat, you!”,
well that would be quite fine.
I wish to confess up front that I haven’t read all of the posts ahead of me (normally I read these threads but today I’m short on time). I wish to apologize if my meager statment is redundant.
Chuck Shumer is a nitwit. He is also fast becoming a political Luddite.
There is nothing more central to re-gaining the soul of righteous progressive voters in American than to DEFEAT Joe Liberman in the primary. Joe Lieberman does not represent the values of the Democratic party. We have a GREAT candidate in Ned Lamont who is so much more in tune with our values that it is not even worth debating. It’s black and white. Despite what Lieberman says there is not a more stark contrast with a Sean Hannity loving Joe Lieberamn versus a true progessive candidate like Ned Lamont.
Oh how I wish I could vote in the CT primary.
God bless Ned Lamont.
God bless American.
Remember how Joe pulled a similar stunt in 2000 when he refused to give up his Senate seat when he ran for VP with Gore? He has the instincts of a loser.
I don’t get it. On Daily Kos, I got chewed out for saying that I won’t support Schumer’s DSCC, because they support Liberman. One of the prominent bloggers took me to task, as did DemifromCt on The Next Hurrah. Meanwhile, I saw Schumer (damn Weasel) yesterday (on Beat the Press) say he was supporting Loserman in his Primary campaign. The folks who were critical of me, were so because I perceived that the DSCC would be participating in the primary against Lamont, yet I had Schumer’s own words, supporting Liberman yesterday.
Essentially, I got heckled for saying that I’d told a DSCC campaign caller that I won’t give to them because of Liberman. I trust the folks here to give me an honest answer to the question:
If I were to give to the DSCC, could part of that campaign contribution go to support Liberman in his primary against Lamont?
It would be stupid to fund Lamont and then have other dollars working against him. The reason I say that is I’ve already donated to Lamont–through Firedoglake.
Because of this confusion, I won’t give to the party–as I did in 2004 and once briefly to the “Give Em Hell Harry” campaign after Harry forced the Repugs to deal with a closed session (over Robert’s stalling on WMD hearings).
I don’t mind giving (especially through FDL), but can only do it when I pull Overtime. That’s hard earned money that I don’t want wasted. Needless to say, I pulled alot of overtime over this Holiday weekend and am also scheduled to earn holiday pay, tomorrow. Looks like Tester and Lamont money to me!
I just posted a comment over at From The Roots. The substance of it was that as much as I wanted the Democrats to take the Senate, I didn’t want to have the DSCC intervene to protect its favorite democrats (read incumbents), nor did I want it to discriminate against maverick democrats should they win primaries against candidates the DSCC supports. I also pledged that I would support candidates independently, rather than through the DSCC and when I did, I would post thost contributions on the DSCC website. That might give a wake up if not a shakeup to Shumer and is insider pals.
History Lesson on the matter of Party Names.
For Party Historians this is a lovely detailed matter of tracking party lore. Too few people realize how much demographic shifting has gone on between and indeed among parties over the years — and thus why guarding all versions of a party name is important.
Let’s begin with some terms. The DNC — Dem National Committee is made up primarily of elected representatives of state parties affiliated with the Democratic Party. In order to “get the franchise” — that is to be the Democratic Party in any state, you have to have a constitution, and bylaws, and much else including a name. Part of getting the franchise is agreement to “protect the brand name” — you actually have to copyright the name and all versions of it, and if it is abused, you have to defend your copyright. Now most State parties have rather average names. “Ohio Democratic Party” for instance — but I happen to belong to one of the oddballs in the mix, I am a member of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party of Minnesota. The DFL for short. Why — well that leads you into understanding about 100 years of demographic shifting of party alliances that should interest us as we work to “Crash the Gates.”
The Progressive Movement in the late 1800’s was in the Republican Party. Leadership was mostly in Teddy Roosevelt’s orbit, particularly after he became President on the assassination of McKinley. TR built a large Progressive Movement not just at the national level, but in the states and cities. It survived the fact that Taft was anything but a progressive, and it was useful when TR created the Bull Moose movement that led to Wilson’s victory in 1912. Some, but not all progressives moved to the Democrats and Wilson.
After TR’s death, and the demise of Wilson as a power center in the Democratic Party, the Business Republicans — the McKinleyites came back with Harding-Coolidge-Hoover. But the Progressive Republicans split off. State by state they did different things. In Wisconsin they founded the Progressive Party and elected LaFollette and kept old Bob and young Bob in office into the 1940’s. In Nebraska, they elected George Norris in 1914, and kept him in office till 1944. Norris was a TR Republican. In North Dakota, they created the non-Partisian League, and took over the banks — state owned banks were all that was legal well into the 1950’s. In Minnesota, the Progressive Republicans and the labor oriented Democrats created the Farmer-Labor Party — and for most of the 30’s and 40’s they owned both senate seats. One of the most important Republican Progressives was Harold Ickes of Chicago who tried to create a Wisconsin-like party in Illinois (along with Jane Addams and Clarence Darrow.) Ickes would become a Democrat in 1932, serve as secretary of Interior in FDR’s administration till 1946, and his son, Harold Jr., is one of Hillary’s close advisors who also worked in the 90’s for Bill.
Now that’s just the beginning. The process of shifting African American voters (till the late 60’s in the North) from the Party of Lincoln to the Democratic fold really began with the Progressives in the 1920’s. Among other things Ickes was doing in Chicago was to find ways to elect Blacks to City offices as Progressives — or Progressive Republicans, but when he finally left the Republicans, he was able to move much of the urban black vote with him. In the years of the New Deal, Ickes offices were something like employment central for the small number of black professionals who made it into Civil Service professional positions. Around DC there were a number of “Progressive Clubs” — organizations of Black Professional Civil Servants. Understanding these is key to understanding the rejection of the Party of Lincoln for the other one.
Now — rather than re-tell it, just let me refer you to Robert Caro’s narrative of the 1948 election in “Master of the Senate” third Volume in his LBJ bio. The full incorporation of Liberal Progressive politics into the Democratic Party core happened in Philadelphia in 1948 at the Convention when the ADA collected the petitions to force a vote on the Civil Rights Plank of the party platform, which led to Hubert Humphrey’s delivering what has become known as the “Sunshine Speech” — the one that caused Strom Thurmond and his like to form the Dixiecrats, and walk out of the party. Labor supported the ADA and the plank won. Truman was none too happy with the ADA and Hubert — but without question it was why he won the election in 1948. In 1948 it was the African American vote in Northern Industrial States that was the margin throwing them into the Dem Column, rather than the Republican as Gallup had predicted. (Gallup was working from 1940 census demographics which did not reflect the great migration out of sharecropping into the industrial sector in the north — where there were among other things Unions which would register members to vote.)
Through all this the notion of screwing up elections by creating false party identies has been a constant problem — and the problem was resolved long ago (at least before 1948) when the Democratic National Committee required state parties to copyright all versions of their name, and defend the copyright against all abuse. In 1948 the DFL (created by a merger in 1944 between the Democratic Party of Minnesota and the Farmer Labor Party) had to deal with Henry Wallace who tried to run in Minnesota as a “Progressive Farmer-Laborite.” They really didn’t want to go into court — but they had to do so. In Minnesota you cannot use any version of Farmer-Labor in a party title, because another party owns all versions of that title. All state parties have exactly the same obligation.
Remember — we really don’t elect any national leaders. State by state we elect electors to vote for President, and all the rest of the ticket is the work of state parties. And this is why for many years state parties have been required to copyright and defend their franchise.
The DLC and what Joe represents in the Senate (I mean his whole set of supporters and financers) is a small power center in the Democratic Party that probably is apt for some sort of party shift at some point. They are the parallel construction of the neo-cons in the Republican system — folk who probably could not get elected to much if they ran on their real program. They really don’t represent major voter interests. But in the short term messing with the rhetoric of party identity does confuse voters, and it needs to be taken very seriously.
Didn’t Keynes say in the short term we will all be alive?
