The dogs and I were having a lovely iced tea on a patio in New Haven this morning with Paul Bass when Tim Tagaris called and said that Lieberman was giving a press conference in an hour. Tim swung by to pick us up and we all went tearing up to the state capital in Hartford at 90 mph. We still weren’t exactly sure why — Lieberman’s people had started making last minute phone calls to reporters, telling them that it was important, and as one reporter noted, "this better not be about the affordability of higher education or I’m going to be pissed."
It’s been a wild couple of days. Yesterday I had coffee with CTKeith and DeanFan84 who post at Dump Joe and My Left Nutmeg and got the whole history of the local blog scene and their advocacy for Lamont. It was very inspirational and I’ll certainly be writing more about it later, but for now suffice to say that it’s an impressive model for promoting progressive candidates throughout the country — at the very least they’ve forced an 18 year incumbent and former Vice Presidential nominee out of the party.<%

Ever since I updated my Quicktime software, I get tons of “Quicktime Q’s with a Question Mark” instead of a viewable video. (I am running Safari 2.0.4 on OSX 10.4.7. Quicktime-Free verson 7.1.2.)
There was something that suggested I reinstall an earlier version, but all attempts to do so came with a warning “Your machine cannot run this reinstaller update” message.

There was one truly prescient post at Talking Points Memo when the Harriet Miers controversy erupted. Josh Marshall wrote, “Who is strongly for her?” Because if there is fierce opposition to anyone (or anything) there needs to be an equally fierce counterforce for the person or idea or thing to prevail. Marshall went on to say he was convinced her nomination would be defeated or withdrawn because no one would go to the mattresses for her.
I think the same litmus test applies to Lieberman–who is truly for him? Because there is fierce opposition, and the best he can muster as support is a bunch of DC-based finger-in-the-wind Dems making tepid comments about “long-time respect for Joe” and not deciding upon who they will support until after the primary. That’s hardly a counterbalance to the rising tide for Lamont. Joe is toast. His only hope for a strong counterforce is Hannity, Rush, Fox News. Oh my.
So, has Gore commented at all on the CT primary? Has anyone asked him if he will support the Democratic nominee in CT?

This is Chris Dodd’s big chance.
The Democrats running for President are coming to the realization that not only is Lieberman an anvil hanging onto their necks, but actively supporting Ned Lamont will show the precise type of testicular fortitude expected of them by the committed Democratic base of liberals, progressives and those truly dedicated people they’ll soon be aggressively courting in Iowa and New Hampshire. The first Democrat looking at the ’08 nomination for President to come out for Lamont will receive a groundswell of activist credibility and support. After one of them makes the leap, expect to see a run for the door as several others attempt to capitalize on the good will as well.
Of all of those running in ‘08, Chris Dodd has the most to gain from this narrow endorsement window of opportunity. Unshackled as he is today as a result of Lieberman’s latest traitorous snub at the Connecticut Democratic party, Dodd has the opportunity to take back his endorsement of Holy Joe. The easy and popular path will be to couch it in a simple: “I will support the winner of my party’s primary.”
The harder path is doing what is really in Dodd’s heart, which is go all the way and endorse Ned Lamont, whom I suspect Senator Dodd privately supports. Dodd has been burned by Lieberman’s behavoir as much and as many times as any Democrat in D.C. An endorsement by Dodd will be wildly popular among those constituents of his who really care about this race. On balance, reaching out to Lamont weighs heavily in Dodd’s favor politically and personally.
Dodd now has a short lived opportunity to give his incipient presidential bid a big shot of adrenaline among those he needs most in 2008. In fact, the few days will be Chris Dodd’s BIGGEST and perhaps only chance to splash into the national Democratic activist limelight. There are no two ways around this, right now is that rare opportunity for immediate national legitimacy among those who matter most to him and the only chance he’ll likely get between now and the beginning of the Iowa caucus. If he truly is serious about running, and he’s thinking hard on it right now, he has a very narrow window to do himself a very big favor. This opportunity is huge, but it will have a short shelf life.
The other upside for Dodd is this. Lamont is a cause celebre for “the Democratic wing of the Democratic party.” Does Dodd want Ned Lamont campaigning and fundraising for him in the months leading up to Iowa, or does Chris Dodd want Ned Lamont to take the easily state position: “I will support my party’s nominee in 2008.”? A few months ago, the handicappers wouldn’t give Ned Lamont a snicker. In a few months, “candidate Dodd” may need “Senator Lamont” more than Senator Lamont needs candidate Dodd. Whatever happens, if Senator Dodd does throw his hat in the presidential ring, it will never fly with a Lieberman anvil still clinging to it.

It’s at least theoretically possible that this story is true, I think. If Cheney didn’t get a document declassified per the procedures, then he may be in some trouble there. The EO covering classification does not give the VP declassification authority over other people’s documents, which is what the NIE was (the CIA produced it). There was a procedure he was supposed to follow, and Bush is saying he instructed Cheney to do that. Cheney instead just leaked the document.
Of course, all this is “according to Bush”, except the part about responsibility for the NIE and the Veep’s declassification authority.
Someone on the previous thread asked whether Lieberman could use the title “independent democrat” on the ballot. Apparently, the answer is no. A Connecticut blogger tracked down the relevant election code section, and it’s posted over at Kos.

When we got to the capital there was a team of fresh-scrubbed young people in Lieberman t-shirts with Lieberman signs who locals have been referring to as the “Lieber-Youth.” (I asked two of them later if they were paid or volunteers %u2014 one robotically said “oh we’re volunteers” but the other rolled her eyes and shrugged in response. It was pretty clear %u2014 unlike Ned’s campaign, which is full of enthusiastic volunteers, Joe’s “supporters” have the meter on.)
I seem to recall that one of the things that killed Lieberman’s 2004 run was that he had at least two of his kids pulling down six-figure salaries (I think they were getting the equivalent of $200k/year), said salaries making up a big chunk of the campaign’s budget.

Well, I’d have to agree with that. Most of his policies never had much support, but he got people to go along by lying about them (”Clear Skies Initiative,” for example, or “we’re only tapping the phones of terrorists.”) Once people stopped trusting him, support for his policies couldn’t be artificially inflated by lies.
But I guess that’s probably not what she meant by it… *g*

I can’t remember for sure where I saw it, I think it was an NYT LTE, where someone pointed out that the *translation* resources available to the NSA were nowhere near adequate to the volume of calls being monitored. Since it is safe to say that Arab/Islamic terrorists would be communicating in English a whole lot, that kind of cast that question of “Who are they really spying on?” into sharp relief.
Also, when I’m in *really* good voice, I can actually transition right from the low demonic “Muahahahaha” to the witch-cackle on one breath. This is rare, however.

True. Nevertheless, Cheney isn’t allowed to declassify documents he did not classify in the first place, and Bush says that he didn’t declassify the NIE. That means that Cheney committed an illegal act. Take that for what little it’s worth in the current political environment.
The logical thing for Cheney to have done, given his assignment, was to have the NIE declassified. Unfortunately, the NIE only supports the Administration’s position if you read the principal findings (what most of us might call an abstract or executive summary). The actual evidence in the NIE doesn’t support those findings. In essence, it says that there was no evidence for WMDs in Iraq. Cheney would have had to call up George Tenet and say “I need you to declassify the NIE in such a way that the CIA will look culpable later on.” Hard to say how that conversation would have gone, so Cheney took the sure route and leaked it. At least, that’s a story that fits the facts as presented, and my understanding of the characters involved.
Of course, there are no doubt many other story possibilities contained in what we still don’t know about this case.
