The dogs and I were having a lovely iced tea on a patio in New Haven this morning with Paul Bass when Tim Tagaris called and said that Lieberman was giving a press conference in an hour. Tim swung by to pick us up and we all went tearing up to the state capital in Hartford at 90 mph. We still weren't exactly sure why -- Lieberman's people had started making last minute phone calls to reporters, telling them that it was important, and as one reporter noted, "this better not be about the affordability of higher education or I'm going to be pissed."
It's been a wild couple of days. Yesterday I had coffee with CTKeith and DeanFan84 who post at Dump Joe and My Left Nutmeg and got the whole history of the local blog scene and their advocacy for Lamont. It was very inspirational and I'll certainly be writing more about it later, but for now suffice to say that it's an impressive model for promoting progressive candidates throughout the country -- at the very least they've forced an 18 year incumbent and former Vice Presidential nominee out of the party.<%

Lieberman is pathetic.
Fitz!!!!
CNN running a piece on netroots and Joe now - talking about netroots raising over $300k for Lamont. Says it Lamont wins, netroots definitely win a place at the table.
BobbyG: so right and so first.
That video is amazing. It’s impossible to imagine somebody running more scared of his own party than this. I hope this move turns out to be pure political self-immolation.
Independent Democrat.
All I can think of is Inego Montoya.
“I do not think that word means what you think it means.”
neurophius — you asked for the FDL Act Blue page link, so here it is:

Firedoglake Donation Page for Lamont at ActBlue.
Join the celebration!
Plus Rasmussen (June 12) has Lamont within SIX points of Loserman.
Good day for the good guys!
Go Ned!
It won’t matter whether Ned wins. No matter how it shakes out, nobody can ever again scoff at the power of the netroots.
Lieberman progressive??? Only if you consider rubber-stamping the current administrative as progressive. He strikes me as being so desperate to hold on to power that he’s willing to destroy his own party in the process, not to mention disrespecting the voters who no longer support him.
poodles at Joe’s presser, too, Jane?
Oh Ned is going to win alright. Have you seen his new ad about what the Iraq $$$ would do in US?
Remeber that Joe has always been about himself. Wouldn’t step down as a Senator when he ran with Gore, risking the seat.
I posted this Lieberman graphic from a Kos diary earlier today here and got zero comments. I’ll try again:
http://www.dailykos.com/commen.....966/29#c29
Don’t know if you have seen this yet, but if not,
GO TO CROOKSandLIARS NOW!
Murray Waas has a hot one.
(if this is old news, sorry, if not, we are salivating at the thought of Christy’s next post)
Go Ned! I’m suddenly reminded of a nice morbid tune from Oklahoma:
Poor Joe is dead,
poor Joe-Nertia’s dead,
all gather round his coffin now and cry;
He couldn’t stand the taunts
of the Roots and Ned Lamont
so Boltin’ Joe’s campaign just had to die.
And on a completely OT, self-aggrandizing note, Happy Birthday to me. *g*
Poor Joe,
I am so tired of watching this mongrel self-bloviate.
Ask 10 different people here in Connecticut why they oppose Joe Lieberman and you’ll get 10 different answers.
I guess there are virtually limitless possible variations of “gutless Republican weasel”…
Rally sign:
Democrat *OR* Independent
PICK ONE
Can the CT Dem Party legally stop him from calling himself an “Independent Democrat”? In the context of elections, doesn’t the name of a political party have some sort of trademark-ish protections?
Here’s a take from the BBC that appears to have been put in the can prior to Lieberman’s announcement today:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/5140778.stm
CNN about to cover Lieberman’s announcement now.
bon anniversaire, Leslie in CA
Yeah, Joe couldn’t wait until after the debate to leave the party, because that would look like he lost the debate. But, having left the party BEFORE the debate, won’t Nutmeg Dems who watch the debate have yet another reason to be pissed at Joe? I mean, who’s gonna watch this debate? Just Dems, right?
And Jane, as usual, has the message right: Joe’s left the party. Repeat as needed: Joe’s left the party.
it was dem scary poodles i tells ya!
Joe is robo-calling folks, pushing the meme that he is an “Independent Democrat.”
Yeah, kissing the ass of the party in power is real independent.
Bad enough that he betrays his party and his state, but he wants to make it sound courageous and heroic, to boot.
Waas bombshell: Bush his own bad self told Cheney to do the dirty deed on Valerie whats-her-name ! http://news.nationaljournal.co.....703nj1.htm

CNN (J. King) about to interview JL.
Says it Lamont wins, netroots definitely win a place at the table.
This. Is. Why. He. MUST. Win.
ET at 14, I didn’t see that earlier - good graphic. I especially like the Netroots scissors snipping his strings.

EPUed. Sigh.
Don’t be hatin’ on “Goalposts Joe.” He’s waiting for his pension to vest.
Okay, my turn to be a WATB.
Ever since I updated my Quicktime software, I get tons of “Quicktime Q’s with a Question Mark” instead of a viewable video. (I am running Safari 2.0.4 on OSX 10.4.7. Quicktime-Free verson 7.1.2.)
There was something that suggested I reinstall an earlier version, but all attempts to do so came with a warning “Your machine cannot run this reinstaller update” message.
Anyone else have this problem? I checked the Apple support msg boards, but no one had discussed…
I MISS my Videos! : (
Three poodles and Jane at 90 mph ! What a mental picture! Stunt man Joe sure is an embarrasment.
Eli - precisely, they are chosing this to test us so we better win!
Also, we have to watch the meme being used that the opposition to Lieberman is over his support for the war since the netroots support for Lamont is not simply an antiwar position … this places antiwar politics on the table as well.
Isn’t it a little hot for a vest, watertiger, dear?
What. A. Wanker.
Afternoon, Eli…
Leslie in CA,
so much fodder this week for the comedians - Joe, Ted, now Bush/Cheney? Are Stewart and Colbert off this week?
Holy Crap, RevDeb at 15. It’s news to me. Must go read.
Chris Dodd statement, from his website, is softer than initial reposts indicated. He’s still leaving himself room:
Statement of Senator Dodd on Senator Lieberman’s Announcement to Begin Circulating Petitions
“Senator Lieberman’s decision is one that I’m sure he has not made lightly, and it reflects his commitment to continue to serve the people of our state in the United States Senate. That decision does not in any way change the fact that Joe Lieberman remains a candidate for the Democratic nomination. I continue to support is candidacy for the nomination, and continue to believe that he will be the Democratic nominee of our party.”
Mommybrain,
Swwwwwwweltering!
Reid and the DSCC have reinforced their support for Lieberman in the primary per CNN statements and will not commit to supporting winner of the primary.
Dana B says - astutely - that even if they “support” the winner of the primary, they can limit that support and thus undercut Lamont.
*ilson46201 26 -
Wow. So, is Bush implictly/effectively throwing Cheney under the bus?
siun your 36 is so on the money!!!
JEEZus, *ilson!
important point EPU’d from last thread:
Eli - precisely, they are chosing this to test us so we better win!
If we can’t beat a worthless fake Dem like Joe in a blue state, with the full weight and passion of the netroots, and a strong candidate with money of his own, it will be a severe blow to our credibility.
*Maybe* we would carry some weight in terms of general elections, but we need DINO congresscritters to feel fear, and that will only happen if we start collecting scalps. And Joe’s is held on with two-decade-old rubber cement.
Hiya, Cap’n!
Joe must’ve been a lot of fun to play games with when he was a child.
I’d say the petition signature drive is Lieberman’s Plan B, except Joe doesn’t like Plan B.
siun…
I will say it again….maybe this time everyone won’t attack me ….FUCK REID and the bush donkey he rode in on.
great! CNN showing ActBLue page for Lieberman and Lamont - Joe total of 9 donors compared to 5000 for Lamont.
siun 43
Then the question to ask these Democratic Party leaders is this:
You mean you’d even THINK about supporting someone running AGAINST the duly-elected Democratic nominee?
Larry - not everyone attacks that viewpoint.
Joe looks like crap on CNN. Look at the eyes… he’s scared.
great! CNN showing ActBLue page for Lieberman and Lamont - Joe total of 9 donors compared to 5000 for Lamont.
I’m sure he’s totally kicking Lamont’s ass on the ActPurple and ActRed pages.

Thanks!!

Larry
so far good interview … John King pressing Joe hard
Nice to see ya, Eli, seems like you’re movin’ and shakin’ with miz Jane these days…lucky fer you.
Did anyone else leave the sound on for Joe the Wanker? I was watching the blog segment; the news about the on-line contris was *fun*–a cool quarter-mil for Lamont. Bitchin’!!
Eli @57,
is there an “Act Yellow” site?
Joe trying to claim he will still be a dem
mentions that Reid and Schumer were notified
and says they are “working their heart out to return me to the senate”
Joe slamming Lamont wealth - someone get Joe’s financials please!
First time poster, love this site.
There was one truly prescient post at Talking Points Memo when the Harriet Miers controversy erupted. Josh Marshall wrote, “Who is strongly for her?” Because if there is fierce opposition to anyone (or anything) there needs to be an equally fierce counterforce for the person or idea or thing to prevail. Marshall went on to say he was convinced her nomination would be defeated or withdrawn because no one would go to the mattresses for her.
I think the same litmus test applies to Lieberman–who is truly for him? Because there is fierce opposition, and the best he can muster as support is a bunch of DC-based finger-in-the-wind Dems making tepid comments about “long-time respect for Joe” and not deciding upon who they will support until after the primary. That’s hardly a counterbalance to the rising tide for Lamont. Joe is toast. His only hope for a strong counterforce is Hannity, Rush, Fox News. Oh my.
So, has Gore commented at all on the CT primary? Has anyone asked him if he will support the Democratic nominee in CT?
King is pushing hard … what will Dem leaders do, what can you say about the position you’ve put your friends in …etc
is there an “Act Yellow” site?
Tons of ‘em. Powerline, LGF, The Corner, TNR…

I know it’s bad, but I can’t help myself.
I’m watching CNN interview Lieberman, and the way his lips move, all I can think of is Jack Nicholson as the Joker in Batman.
John King is asking fabulous questions! Just like a real reporter.
Leslie in CA - HAPPY BIRTHDAY :,) with roman candles…

John King nails it!

This is Chris Dodd’s big chance.
The Democrats running for President are coming to the realization that not only is Lieberman an anvil hanging onto their necks, but actively supporting Ned Lamont will show the precise type of testicular fortitude expected of them by the committed Democratic base of liberals, progressives and those truly dedicated people they’ll soon be aggressively courting in Iowa and New Hampshire. The first Democrat looking at the ’08 nomination for President to come out for Lamont will receive a groundswell of activist credibility and support. After one of them makes the leap, expect to see a run for the door as several others attempt to capitalize on the good will as well.
Of all of those running in ‘08, Chris Dodd has the most to gain from this narrow endorsement window of opportunity. Unshackled as he is today as a result of Lieberman’s latest traitorous snub at the Connecticut Democratic party, Dodd has the opportunity to take back his endorsement of Holy Joe. The easy and popular path will be to couch it in a simple: “I will support the winner of my party’s primary.”
The harder path is doing what is really in Dodd’s heart, which is go all the way and endorse Ned Lamont, whom I suspect Senator Dodd privately supports. Dodd has been burned by Lieberman’s behavoir as much and as many times as any Democrat in D.C. An endorsement by Dodd will be wildly popular among those constituents of his who really care about this race. On balance, reaching out to Lamont weighs heavily in Dodd’s favor politically and personally.
Dodd now has a short lived opportunity to give his incipient presidential bid a big shot of adrenaline among those he needs most in 2008. In fact, the few days will be Chris Dodd’s BIGGEST and perhaps only chance to splash into the national Democratic activist limelight. There are no two ways around this, right now is that rare opportunity for immediate national legitimacy among those who matter most to him and the only chance he’ll likely get between now and the beginning of the Iowa caucus. If he truly is serious about running, and he’s thinking hard on it right now, he has a very narrow window to do himself a very big favor. This opportunity is huge, but it will have a short shelf life.
The other upside for Dodd is this. Lamont is a cause celebre for “the Democratic wing of the Democratic party.” Does Dodd want Ned Lamont campaigning and fundraising for him in the months leading up to Iowa, or does Chris Dodd want Ned Lamont to take the easily state position: “I will support my party’s nominee in 2008.”? A few months ago, the handicappers wouldn’t give Ned Lamont a snicker. In a few months, “candidate Dodd” may need “Senator Lamont” more than Senator Lamont needs candidate Dodd. Whatever happens, if Senator Dodd does throw his hat in the presidential ring, it will never fly with a Lieberman anvil still clinging to it.
sláinte,
cl
My apologies.. especially to you siun….my comment @52 was not to imply that you have attacked that viewpoint….

Ooo — Leslie in CA — Happy Birthday to you!
Liberman is making this “will we impose a litmus test” on the WOT … painting Lamont as not caring for the safety of american families
Of course, Sanctimonious Joe wants this to be All About Iraq and Litmus Tests.
Fuck him and his piece-of-shit “loyalties”.
sometimes the cream needs a little help rising to the top….
Must… remember… where I am… Must… bite… tongue…
we obviously need to be doing a better job getting the message out that this is not just about Iraq. CNN has made Iraq the only issue in the primary.
Linda 72
Dang it. I’m TiVoing the YKos panel on C-Span and can’t watch CNN at the same time.
Thanks for keeping us posted on the interview.
Ed*ard Teller at 12:58
That is a great graphic. Says it all.
Hate to interupt the euphoria about Joe, but OT Murray Waas has an article in the NJ today “Bush Directed Cheney to Counter War Critic”. The entire article can be picked up on Demo Underground site too.
Lieberman keeps repeating the phrase “insurance policy” when describing his announcement.
Would this be “unemployment insurance?”
Schadenfreud? I’m soaking in it! Watertiger sounds hot. Always room for one more ;)
Of course, Sanctimonious Joe wants this to be All About Iraq and Litmus Tests.
Litmus tests detect lyes, right?
Larry - thanks.
Dodd has already announced his continued support for Joe.
King - why not leave your party at the beginning, why the primary
“I just told him to disclose classified information - I didn’t expect him to do anything *illegal*!”
_____
If Bush does/authorizes it, it’s not “illegal,” right?
Joe: “who knows who might turn out to vote in the Democratic primary on a hot August day?”
Way to insult the Dem primary voters, Joe.
Sorry *ilson, I just read your comment.
Addington told Libby that the Preznit and/or Veep had “broad authority” to declassify …
Joe claims he is “diversity in this party” …
Waas!
If Bush does/authorizes it, it’s not “illegal,” right?
Yes, you’re right. “Leaking to the press” is the new procedure for declassifying sensitive information. Who knew?
Litmus tests detect lyes, right?
Eli, I knew you’d be a hit over here. Just don’t let it go to your head…or the Atriots will come on over, and you WILL be stopped.
Joe claims he is “diversity in this party”…
Perversity, maybe…
Eli, I knew you’d be a hit over here. Just don’t let it go to your head…
Probably no cause for concern there…
Geez…I didn’t mean to bring the traffic to a halt. JK!! JK!!!
Arrgh, I’ve been caught in the moderation filters . . .

if by diversity he means Republican, that is a true statement.
HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO LESLIE IN CA — WOOHOO!!!
Funny how “diversity” never includes, y’know, Democrats who actually support *Democratic* policies…
Joe Lieberman: Individual democrat for 2006
That is some crazy spin.
Schadenfreud? I’m soaking in it!
I think it’s spelled “Nedenfreude”.
Funny how “diversity” never includes, y’know, Democrats who actually support *Democratic* policies…
Diversity, not insanity. Only a bunch of real wackjobs on the left support Democratic policies.
OFG - yep!
John King was brilliant! sending him a thank you for asking the real questions
Joe’s continued comments that he has DSCC support is important - they must be made to understand that we will not forgive support for Joe.
Well, kids, it’s a fascinating if predicted development. Lieberman is a narcissistic opportunist, it’s right there in DINO. Democratic Independent Narcissistic Opportunist. The question is, whose opportunity. I say Ned’s.
Murray is a hero, a true American. Thanks Murray.
I am kind of sick, so am going to just read along, but wanted to share in the celebration here. I think it’s important to note that Joe is the one creating all the insanity in this race, Ned is just doing what an American can do under the Constitution. Less politics, more students and honesty. Joe, well, not so much, kinda more political maneuvering, WATB and nastiness. Had enough? (thanks Teddy)
Leslie in CA - Have a great one!
Joe’s continued comments that he has DSCC support is important - they must be made to understand that we will not forgive support for Joe.
Is there any mechanism to force Schumer out as DSCC chair for gross malfeasance? Especially if, say, Joe runs as an independent and ends up throwing the seat to the Republicans?
(Any other outcome could probably be spun as either “No harm, no foul” or “We meant to do that”…)
so gang … did you know that Harry Reid has a blog?
Someone on dkos just posted the link and suggested Harry might like some comments:
http://giveemhellharry.com/pag.....group/vips
Punaise,
your 69 is the best..
nothing personal.
GO NED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(trying to sneak past the filters . . . )
Lieberman’s “insur*nce p*licy” sounds like unemployment insur*nce to me . . .
Peterr, you are funny.
This tactic of Lieberman is making a laughingstock of the political process, and as such, all those currently in office, who achieved that position through the political process, should immediately denounce this perverted end run that is doomed for failure. Support the voters, do not poke them in the eye, and rebuke those politicians who choose to flaunt the will of the people.
Joe’s continued comments that he has DSCC support is important - they must be made to understand that we will not forgive support for Joe.
Over at Eschaton, this here guy opined :
“You heard it here first: the DSCC and the DCCC will confirm that they do not care one little [deleted] about their constituents. They will pay a price for this, but sadly, so will we.”
They still think it’s *their* party, not *ours*.
Also, just cause my kids knew her kids, the writer who coines “Hippo birdie two ewes” is Sandra Boynton, who lives in NW Connecticut, and could likely be a Lamont voter.
Small world.
Lieberman’s “insur*nce p*licy” sounds like unemployment insur*nce to me . . .
But does it cover “Acts of Ned”?
I just saw Joe on the Situation Room, I hope somebody posts the video and breaks it down because, well, he comes off as an arrogant, opportunistic lying sack of shit.
Eli - not sure but …
even if the DSCC claims to support Lamont, they can withold real support - limit contributions, not go out to speak for him, etc …
for example, while Obama only gave Lieberman $4200 this cycle, his appearances are noted for raising large amounts of money from others … will Obama go and speak *for* Lamont or decide to be too busy…
this is why we need to press hard now - the DSCC needs to understand that we will fight them on this
I’m thinking we may need a petition of netroots pledging no money to DSCC if they do not immediately pledge to support the winner of the primary and then actively support that winner. Put them on notice now!
punaise,
Don’t know if you saw this yesterday, but this Opus is for you.
But not to worry, we’ve got your back.
Chuck Schumer as head of the DSCC is elected by incumbent Democratic Senators only. only!
Peterr - you nailed it. The filters don’t like *nsurance salesmen.
flounder 120
and your point is…
Its so awesome watching this unfold. We have got to purge the Charlatan Democrats from the party and Lieberman is the perfect place to start. Netroots in f**kin’ action baby.
There is something happen’ here and its entirely clear what it is. Its an epistemological shift. This used to be known as a generational shift but its different this time, this shift has more to do with whether or not one is in denial of current state of U.S. political situation (namely Iraq) or not. I’m not in denial, its F.u.b.a.r. Wish it weren’t but wishing won’t fix it. Time to get back to back to our roots as Liberals. Lieberman will be the first major political causticity of something that started with Bill Clinton, being a Republican Lite, time to get back on track. Go Ned!!! Knock him with a Left hook, he won’t know what hit him. I love this so mouch. Go Jane, I like this on the road thing, who said bloggers couldn’t do that sort of thing. Woo Woo.
siun at 79:
Liberman is making this “will we impose a litmus test” on the WOT … painting Lamont as not caring for the safety of american families
Hmmm, where have I heard that before? Oh, yeah, from the Republicans! Good job proving our point once again, Joe!
siun,
who is the regional rep for Oklahoma in the DSCC? I need to make some calls.
I’m thinking we may need a petition of netroots pledging no money to DSCC if they do not immediately pledge to support the winner of the primary and then actively support that winner. Put them on notice now!
What about pledging to not just withhold, but to redirect to Lamont?
Nomination for the Most Arrogant Statement I’ve Heard Today:
Joe Lieberman to John King: I want to give my fellow Democrats here in Connecticut the opportunity to affirm my service . . .
(have to run out for groceries before everything shuts for the 4th - back in a few! can I get anyone anything?)
This is less about Schadenfreude than about Lieb-as-toad.
