Holy Joe is really pulling down the endorsements, eh? Karl Rove’s going to bat for him and he has Hannity, O’Reilly, Coulter, and now…Crazy Ass Racist-Bitch (yes, TBogg coined that phrase). In the proccess Malkin proves once again that whatever physical brain abnormality it is that makes authoritarian cultism seem rational and desirable should also preclude one from ever getting one’s hands on a video camera. And she most certainly shouldn’t be stepping in front of one when the little red light is on.
The question needs to be asked — does Lieberman actually want these people going to bat for him? He did pick up a union nod yesterday, but it lasts only until the primary (not until November — a big victory for Lamont) and to call it "half-hearted" would be too charitable. Call it reluctant vig paid to Machine Boss Lieberman and file under "with friends like that…":
“I hope that after this is over we can get Joe Lieberman, all of us, even the ones that get along greatly with Joe, and beat the s- – - out of him,” said Ken Delacruz, Metal Trades union, quoted by WTNH, the local ABC affiliate.
And he was a Lieberman supporter. Paul Filson of the Service Employees International Union said Lieberman “supports the worst boss this country has ever had; George Bush.”
“I can go back to 1993 and say Joe Lieberman was not there on trade,” said William Rudis of the International Association of Machinists, quoted by the Hartford Courant. “We don’t need to be in Boston to spill the tea.”
Lieberman’s views, especially on Iraq, “will splatter our banner with the blood of innocent people,” said Bill Shortell, vice president of the Central Connecticut Labor Council. “No. No. We’ve got to go with Lamont.”
I can’t imagine how hard the party bosses had to whip their rank-and-files to get them to support a man who legitimizes one of the most anti-labor Presidents ever, but it looks like it was with extreme reluctance and many strings attached. If Lieberman leaps into the arms of his right-wing paramours after the primary, it sounds like all bets are off.
Oh well. He’ll always have Malkin…

One does wonder what Joe-nertia thinks of all these extremists endorsing him. But, sadly, he probably thinks his re-election is an end that justifies any means at all.

Joe-Nertia must think that all publicity is good publicity. I hope the rank and file dems in CT are immune to the diseased spewings of the Fux News screechmonkeys.
Stop with the fabulous photoshopping already. Have just spewed my milk and oreos over new keyboard that replaced the old one that took a hit over the Madonna and Child a/k/a Jane and Markos photo. STOP in the name of love. I can no longer afford to read FDL.

NOT ONE Democratic Senator quizzed Treasury Sec. nominee Henry Paulson on his response, that he would NOT support any tax increases. How can democrats ask me to support them when not one of them could muster the courage to ask Hank, “Just why wouldn’t you support a tax increase on the top 10% earners?”

bailey (22): Thanks for mentioning the quietude of Democratic Senators. I get the impression that there is a lack of leadership in Congress on our side of the aisle. It seems to be every person for him or her self. Reactive not proactive. The Democrats need to all get together in a room, repeatedly, and figure out whether there is anything they can agree on, what goals they can strive for, and how they can go about achieving them. They just seem to be empty vessels at this point.

Senator Lieberman has not only been a tool of the Republican party and a stooge for the DLC, he has throughout his political career, been a sycophantic lackey for the various Israeli governments. So much so, that he should be compelled to register as an agent for a foreign government. He has placed the interests of Israel above those of his country on virtually every major issue. Most recently, his rock solid support for the Iraq War and his unswerving support for genocide against the Palestinians is sorely indicative of his loyalties. It is long past time to get rid of Lieberman, pull out of Iraq, and find an equitable solution to the “Palestinian question”. No settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict equates to no peace in the Mideast.

Supreme Court ruling. We have these things called treaties that are supposed to have the force and effect of laws. But apparently that’s all gone now.
The Vienna convention – passed to try to standardize treatment of foreign nationals, we’re a party, but apparently that means — ?? nothing worth right down and affirming by vote of Congress apparently.
You are supposed to tell foreign nationals of their right to contact their consulates after their arrest. But having now discovered that the Roberts/Alito majority doesn’t believe in excluding evidence for violations of the 4th amendment, and that only a strange alliance of liberals and Scalia have insured that you still get to pick your own lawyer if you can pay for him (instead of having the state override your selection with their choice), it’s not such a big surprise that treaty violations don’t result in exclusions of evidence too.
So the treaty says you must tell foreign nationals of their ability to contact their consulate. The Supreme Court says – but if you don’t, there’s no legal penalty and they have no legal recourse for the violation.
Roberts said the ruling “in no way disparages the importance of the Vienna Convention”
Wow. So how does that work, well because he says a country, whose counselate doesn’t know their citizen has been taken bc no one is required to tell them, can always do diplomatic stuff. You know, the same diplomatic stuff that they could do — IF YOU DIDN’T ALREADY HAVE A TREATY.
It’s just not a biggie, he says, bc diplomatic avenues remain open for any violation
Ahhh, for the good old days – you just declare war and go take your detainees back, right? Or wait — maybe they negotiate, diplomatically, and reach, you know, an AGREEMENT, kind of like a, what do they call those things — oh yeah, TREATIES, and then with that diplomatic agreement in hand — we breach. This is why John Bolton is such a great diplomat.
I shouldn’t jump the gun, though, bc he correctly points out that, . . .the rights of foreign nationals are effectively protected by other existing constitutional and legal requirements, including the right to a lawyer.
Yes indeed. If someone is going to breach a whole treaty while they send you off to jail, you want your lawyer to be able to mention to you the laws AND treaties that are being broken — without legal recourse — so you’ll, uh, what exactly?
It is nice to have that lawyer right that Scalia helped preserve, so that they can mention in passing to you the soon to be archaic cultural anomalies we used to have — a warrant requirement for search and seizure, and knock and announce rule for home invasions, no tortured confessions, no secret tribunals. It’s very helpful to have a lawyer around to tell you about all the things that no longer protect you.

If I were a Connecticut voter, and I was torn between voting for Lieberbaby and voting for Ned Lamont, and I heard that the crazy right wing was coming out in support of the Whiny One, that would end my hemming and hawing right there, and it would be Ned Lamont all the way.
And if Lieberbaby hadn’t had his brain stolen by the alien life form that is George Bush, he would be able to figure out that if the likes of Coulter and Malkin and O’Reilly were in his corner, not even the crazies consider him a real Democrat anymore.

They didn’t have to whip them at all – it was a voice vote, without a roll call. Joe would have needed 2/3 of the vote for the endorsement. All reports are that in the hall, the “nays” were almost as loud as the “yeas.” No roll call was called for…

Puns and a flair for understatement! What was that President Muffley said to Premier Kissoff? “I’m capable of being just as sorry as you are.”
I assume that everyone gets that these public endorsements are no accident (Malkin excepted), right? They either want a party switch or a wounded Joe to face a Republican (I assume they’re discounting a Lamont win followed by a win in the general).

No, I totally get that Michelle Malkin thinks she’s doing Joe a favor by endorsing him. And for once, I agree. I am glad she endorsed him so that everyone in Conn. can feel as sick to their stomach as I do for pulling the lever for Joe. I pulled it in 2000 here in Florida (well, at least I THINK I did) and then his poor constiuents in Conn. who must feel like a Monkey’s uncle. Ned rocks. I have sent all my beer money to him now that I no longer drink. It is the least I could do.
Wipe out a bad puns with a punaiser.
I’ve enjoyed all of your articles about Lieberman. I was just thinking that perhaps someone should be jumping on the administration’s outrage at the NY Times, and their disclosure of the not-so-secret governmental spying on international bank records. If this is treasonous, then what is outing Valerie Plame?!! I mean we have Bush, Chaney and Rove orchestrating this outrage among the lapdog media outlets with their carefully scripted sound bites. How stupid is this mainstream media for not pointing out their unabashed hypocrisy?? Moreover, Olberman(sp?) pointed out tonight that the so-called classified spying program is not even classified; it has its own website and magazine! So how can that be treasonous?!!
Am on my way to hang with kids as we watch Ferris Beuler’s Day Off. Will get two replacement oreos on my way upstairs. Thanks again for such a great image. God I love this place.
I hope Ned Lamont is savvy enough to make some commercials with all of these goopers giving Holy Joe their support hehe.
Frankkly, I was shocked when I saw the verbal vote of the union on local TV news. I could perceive no difference in decibel levels between the yeas for Lieberman and the yeas for Lamont. I really think the union leaders were pressured and pressed the union themselves. It was incredibily devisive.
Mary 47———-Wow. Does this apply only to the Vienna Convention?
Or will this carry over into every other treaty…legally, how does that work?
mjh — there have been many comments/posts on that topic, both here and on other blogs linked here. In reading through comments the last few days, you’ll find that, and lots of links to other blogs. I hope Stewart or Colbert points out the obvious tonight; however, it’s definitely not funny any more!

Unfortunately my daughter prefers Nordstroms
The surge of open wingnut support for Lieberman means he is going to pull out and make a run as an Indie or even Republican — assuming he can get the current Republican hopeful (who?) to take a fall. If not the GOP will buy the sucker off.
None of this is accidental. What we are seeing is the ramp-up to Joey leaving the Democratic party. The way to do that is to arouse the CT Reopublicans, conservatives, and wingnuts. Do not be fooled. There are lots of them in CT. My daughter lives in CT, is a liberal and tells me in some places it is suffocating, they are such Bush-lovers, esp. in the rich enclaves.
This is all orchestrated and part of a plan. Look for an announcement soon. Good effing riddance.
Scarborough and guest calling global warming and Al Gore an alarmist. No wonder I never mean to leave the tele on this show.
I watched the Malkin video and, frankly I’m confused. Is she trying to be some kind of comedian? Or just make a fool of herself? The Mentos thing voice-over on the Lamont ad was simply pathetic. The crude and nasty photoshop job on Kos over the Falujah tragedy is not even worth comment and the takeoff on Lamonts morphing Lieberman into Bush with Markos words coming out of Ned’s mouth ends up a pretty good spot for Ned!
Jane, what’s the deal with Ross Dress for Less? My darling wife used to shop there all the time before I put my foot down. She just loves a bargain and I know she’s still sneaking in there. Maybe it’s a reaction from growing up a child of relative privelege, her own horses and a chauffered Austin Princess to private school and all that. Anyway that could be designer jeans and an expensive sweater on Malkin. She just makes it look like crap. It’s a gift.

You have the eye for fashion, my friend.
This is all orchestrated and part of a plan.
It certainly seems so. But Lamont’s strong showing also has evidently forced them to pull the string on Lieberman at a time when it might not be quite as damaging to the Dems as it could have been. It’s long been clear that 2000 would be about the closest Joe would get to the top of the party, but how’d you like to have him unveil in a nearly deadlocked Senate with no election for at least two years? This way, whether he actually switches in the end or not, there’s at least a chance to do something immediately.
The rumors that I am orchestrating Lieberman’s campaign strategy are unfounded. Though I can certainly see why they’re circulating.

Just can’t share your darkness there. The consular rights case has been percolatin’ for at least ten years. A colleague of mine, Sandra Babcock worked that issue for years, primarily in the death penaly context for foreign nationals (particularly Mexican nationals in Texas). I think the new cases, sanchez-llamas and Bustillon are actually a move forward. Although they represent a defeat for the exclusionary rule, they seem to be a victory for the international rule of law. OK, it is not overt, but there clearly was not a majority for the Government’s position that international treaties do not apply in domestic prosecutions. This is an unsurprising result in light of earlier case Verdugo and Alvarez-Machain.
I acually think the court has moderated on these issues since the death of Rehnquist.

and carlos ain’t half bad either. I listen to Savoy nearly every day. Gets the juices flowing.
Evening. The AFL-CIO actually isn’t a union….it’s the gathering of all unions. Now then, speaking of unions, has Lamont gotten down to the union halls? Down to see the dock workers? Been out to the factory gates at shift time? If not, he better get his ass out there.
And soon. Isn’t there a debate coming up? If I were Lieberman, and I knew Lamont had NOT been to see the working people, I’d damn sure bring that up in the debate. I’d tell the viewers that “I (Lieberman) have fought for the working people for “x” years, and saved alot of jobs. And my opponent? He hasn’t even bothered to shake hands with you working folks. How can you even trust him to fight for your jobs in Congress?”
Pretty heady stuff. And those folks have an ultimate power: they vote! So, I’d reccomend that dear Mr. Lamont shag his ass down to where the working people, and the union guys are. And do it soon.

Re: dogs in clothes
It’s not that I don’t appreciate a well-done photograph, or even a chuckle over a Halloween costume, it’s just that I love the “dogginess” of my dogs, the purity of their doghood is what makes them so special (although I do talk to them as though they might answer me one day, and my kids make fun of my “conversations” and even like to pretend to answer for them).
I just don’t get doggie weddings and doggie outfits, and couldn’t stand to humiliate my Labs by making them wear clothes. :-)

Zennurse,
Ya know, don’tcha, that Rollin’ Stone article is right…everythin that happens in the contested primaries and in the national media framin’issues right now, reflects the battle for control of the Democratic Party and the image and definition of the party. Even if we win control of both houses, the battle will not be over…the cry of “who lost Iraq” will be screamed from every media megaphone.
Rove and his bosses (the families like the Bushes who supported and enriched themselves offa the Third Reich) have studied the Nazi rise to power and are duplicatin’ the effort right down to settin’ up a war to neutralize the oppposition or destroy it entirely if that war is lost.
Make no mistake, we are dealin’ with REAL Nazis here…the fascists who won WWII with the blood of our fathers and grandfathers while gorgin’ themselves on profits from both sides and then established the American Empire (shortlived as it was) on the fragments of the British, French and Portugese colonies.
These folks have been waitin patiently for the day that they control all 3 branches of government…if ya think they’re gunna let sumpthin’ like a free election take that power away from ‘em yer smokin’ some pretty good stuff.
KEEP THE FAITH AND HIT WHATCHER AIMIN’ AT…THIS BATTLE TADAY AIN’T THE WHOLE WAR!!!
Labor loses that lovin feeling!
Imman – I’ll agree it is not surprising, but I don’t see any victory for the international rule of law. More so – I see another chip on the exclusionary front and another posture to sidestep applications of treaties for upcoming cases or to take the next best step — a violation ceded, but with no remedy.
The context seems discouraging to me. We have had two cases in quick succession refusing to apply the exclusionary rule where executive actions violate existing laws or standards. With the cases in the pipeline, it certainly seems to me that things are taking shape in a framework for violations of the warrant requirment for the NSA cases, torture evidence, etc. to end up with no legal remedy of exclusion.
Rendition cases with treaties that require no transfers to countries that torture – no remedy other than a “diplomatic” one. Notice to consular offices of detention – no remedy to instead detain their citizens and ship them to other countries for torture. Or rather, a “diplomatic” remedy. IOW, the question isn’t so much that they are saying they won’t recognize the treaty – but rather that they are not willing to apply legal safeguards for violatons of the treaties.
All assuming the state secrets doesn’t stop the court from getting that far. (The whole “diplomatic remedy” is kind of farcical IMO when the existence of the treaty IS the diplomatic remedy.)
Anyway, I see the combo of decisions out the last few months as not looking good for the cases in the pipeline from the WOT. Hope that is wrong. I’ve been in a black mood all week and I hope it is just innate crankiness.
It’s a strange pschological disorder he’s got: Constantly ratting out his associates in order to curry favor with The Boss. In another environment, Lieberman would be called a snitch, and we all know how everybody loves and respects a snitch. They end up despised by their former friends and held in contempt by their masters. Lieberman is the Democratic party’s Quisling. He needs to remember that things don’t go well for snitches when push comes to shove.
meta,
Eric Burdon – Nice, thanks!
We gotta get outta this place ; )
norskflamethrower at 153. I’m afraid you’ve nailed it.
They can have Joe, Who needs him anyway.
To Lieberman verb. Said of a member of a political party who uses his party’s opponents talking points to separate himself from his own party’s beliefs.
ex: Given the AP report below:
“Sen. Barack Obama chastised fellow Democrats on Wednesday for failing to “acknowledge the power of faith in the lives of the American people,” and said the party must compete for the support of evangelicals and other churchgoing Americans.
“Not every mention of God in public is a breach to the wall of separation. Context matters,” the Illinois Democrat said in remarks to a conference of Call to Renewal, a faith-based movement to overcome poverty.”
“It is doubtful that children reciting the Pledge of Allegiance feel oppressed or brainwashed as a consequence of muttering the phrase ‘under God,’” he said. “Having voluntary student prayer groups using school property to meet should not be a threat, any more than its use by the High School Republicans should threaten Democrats.”
Barack Obama Liebermaned on religion.
“Crazy Ass Racist Bitch” should only have a hyphen b/w the last two words if it’s being used to modify a noun, as in “Crazy Ass Racist-Bitch Signal”. You could defensibly hyphenate “Crazy-Ass” at all times, however.
Just wondering… is it possible the wingnuts are trying to get their base out in CT to vote Dem in the primary & get their buddy Lieberman through the Dem primary? Hmmm. Might be good to get the Democrat voters fired up for this primary as well.
Scarecrow – I won’t re-lurk. Thanks for your suggestions. I’m still in the clouds right now with the SCOTUS decision. This is the first good news we’ve had since Fitz indicted Libby. So hard to focus on work what with good news finally. I just want to bask in the ruling. I loved hearing Bush stammer and stutter today about the ruling.
