I wish I could impute nefarious intent to the effort of traditional media types to make the blogosphere’s opposition Joe-nertia "all about the war," but if I had to guess I’d say it was more due to abject laziness and a lack of native curiosity. As I’ve written many, many times before, my rabid lambiness took root during the Alito cloture vote, when Lieberman sided with the Gang of 14 to put a sexist, elitist, fundamentalist Dobson-loving bigot like Strip Search Sammy on the Supreme Court. I feared the country could not survive another one. And when interviewed for the new Time Magazine article on the race, Markos noted that he himself had said "enough" after Lieberman dicked everyone around on Social Security.
But that didn’t fit the narrative that both Lieberman and Time are aggressively pushing. Says Markos:
I was interviewed for this story but didn’t make it in. You know why? Because the reporter asked me why we were targetting Lieberman, and I said my motivation was Lieberman’s refusal to fall in line on social security until it was obvious Bush’s efforts were dead.
Apparently it didn’t fit the "anti-war" frame with which the media insists on viewing this race.
Objecting to Holy Joe’s warmongering is a perfectly good reason to oppose him, but it does not appear to be the unifying factor that many would have it. Lieberman’s done so much skeevy shit over the years everyone has their own reasons for wanting him off the national stage, feel free to name your own in the comments. But it sure does make for an easy headline, huh?
Meanwhile, the fine folks over at Schumer Watch are keeping the heat turned up on the head of the DSCC. What will the Ego that Roared do if Joe-nertia jumps ship? Maybe he should take a cue from Russ Feingold. (Don’t worry. I’m not holding my breath.)

Welcome back, Jane!
You definitely coming to Pittsburgh?
Jane!!!!!
OT.
Look at this quote from the “sage of Omaha”, Warren Buffett.
(Snip)
“I love it when I’m around the country club and I hear people talking about the debilitating effects of a welfare society,” he said.”At the same time, they leave their kids a lifetime and beyond of food stamps. Instead of having a welfare officer’ they have a trust officer. And instead of food stamps, they have stocks and bonds.”
This is one for the quick response files.

Jane- I left you more detailed comment on the thread of your earlier post. But, are you going to be based in the New Haven area?
Joementum reminds me of the Family Guy epi with the flashback to Stewie at Woodstock, singing (to the tune of “America The Beautiful”) “Establishment, Establishment, you always know what’s beeeeest…”
Jane!
and rabid lambs!

Hey, they earned it by osmosis. Poor people should get themselves better families.
Are there rabid lamb-bats? Or do the rabid lambs have bats in their mouth, and when they bleat they shoot bats at you?
I got nothin’.
Eli — yes, I’ll be in Pittsburgh tomorrow night. I’m in Terre Haute right now. I’m driving from Starbucks to Starbucks — it’s like herding a caravan of poodles through the desert, looking for T-Mobile WiFi.
And yes, VG, I’m going to be in New Haven for a month or so, at least that’s what we’re planning right now. But I’m keeping it loose. It’s the wonderful thing about blogging, have WiFi, will travel. I’ll look for the comment later tonight, gotta get to Indianapolis right now.
Eli %u2014 yes, I’ll be in Pittsburgh tomorrow night.
Woohoo!!!

OT — Pardon me, Jane but I wanted people to know that Chris Matthews said he will be on The Colbert Report tonight.
However, I cannot find anything to verify that. (Surprise, surprise.)
TV Guide and Comedy Central’s official website for The Colbert Report say it is Mark Bowden. Just wanted people to be on the lookout for it, in case he is the guest tonight.
Matt O., I was not listening carefully enough, but I thought he said that Colbert would be on Hardball tomorrow.
dunno though.
Hello Jane,
Nice to hear your voice. Really nice. When in Conn., do you have time for breakfast/lunch/dinner? I could certainly make the trip….
Re: Leiberman:
It’s not all about the war. It’s all about the suck. Suck, suck, suck. He sucks.
Welcome back Jane, and come visit us in the Boston area.
Watching the reports come out each week on decision of the Supreme Court is more than enough reason to seek the retirement of any Senator who failed to do everything he/she could to keep Alito off the Court. And Social Security would have been enough, too. And then there’s this awful occupation of Iraq.
Re: Leiberman:
It’s not all about the war. It’s all about the suck. Suck, suck, suck. He sucks.
He. Is. A. Republican. It’s not just the war.
angie –
You’re probably right. Nevermind, nothing to see here.

Jane– my favorite restaurant ever is Pasta Nostra in South Norwalk CT. The best Italian food on the planet. Loud, small, and very strict on arrival times for reservations cause they never rush you, but the food is out of this world exceptional and the service impeccable. I will call Joe and tell him to treat you with love and grace (especially from me) if you decide to go.
http://www.pastanostra.com/
Matt, angie, I heard “not tonight” for Tweety on Colbert also. Is either Tues or Weds.
Billmon has a lengthy, thoughtful post about the Kos Kerfuffle http://billmon.org/archives/002482.html
Nice to hear from Ms. Hamsher. It’s like a virtiual road trip. Except no sightseeing pics this time. But no complaints. Thank you for the post.
Things should get fun in one area: Norquist is busted for money laundering and lobbying in McCain report (despite longstanding GOP denials that this is what Norquist did). Norquist’s response is to call McCain a delusioinal liar.

Schadenfruede is kind of not nice, but to be honest, I got a peaceful feeling when I read the piece.
I also have a peaceful feeling when I read about all the non-bunco candidates that the lambs in wolves clothing (that is, Mssrs. Schumanel) are not supporting: even those who look like winners. But that is the peace of numbed, outraged shock. These guys have a record they think can stand up against some of those primary results? I don’t think so.
All I gotta say is: Turnip Day. HST deliverd it himself off the cuff. I hope Kissell and McNerney can do as well. I bet Tester can after seeing his debate.

It would be a lot more fun to see Tweety on Colbert’s turf though. I will stay up to see if he shows up, Matt O.
“Lieberman’s done so much skeevy shit over the years everyone has their own reasons for wanting him off the national stage”…
I think there are plenty of non-targeted dems guilty of any single one of Lieberman’s atrocities, but few combine them all in one whiny, hang-dog package in a blue state, or go on TV all the time to shick a shiv in the back of their party.
Taking down Lieberman will be the biggest wake-up call Schumer and the DC Dems have ever had. If Florida didn’t do it. and losing the Senate on ‘02 didn’t do it, and Ohio and Swift Boat Vets didn’t do it. and Hackett didn’t do it, and Abramoff didn’t do it, and Testor didn’t do it, may this will.
It’s the grass roots version of “Here’s a nice sharp stick. Now poke it in your eye.”
It would be a lot more fun to see Tweety on Colbert’s turf though. I will stay up to see if he shows up, Matt O.
I assume Colbert will be in character even if he’s on with Tweety, yes? That will be interesting.
via tbogg comments, photoshop of GWB from Canada, very funny:
Chimperator
Joe lost me during the Florida recount. He was no where to be found. Cheney was doing what a VP candidate should be doing; being the pit bull. Lieberman was quietly sitting on the sidelines insisting that some votes are more holier than others (late and incorrectly registered voters in the services), and other inane ideas.
Operation “One Threat A Week Until Election Day” is now under way.

Limbaugh Detained At Airport
Image
Joy Purdy
Reporting
(CBS4 News) WEST PALM BEACH Sources have confirmed to CBS4 News that conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh has been detained at Palm Beach International Airport for the possible possession of illegal prescription drugs Monday evening.
Limbaugh was returning on a flight from the Dominican Republic when officials found the drugs, among them Viagra.
Limbaugh entered a plea deal back in April in a previous case where his charge of fraud to conceal information to obtain prescriptions was dropped under the condition he continue undergoing treatment for addiction.
Limbaugh had admitted to being addicted to pain killers on his radio program and had entered a rehabilitation program prior to that arrest.

I hope so. What makes this different is, it’s the first such wakeup call that they can’t rationalize away by saying, “Oh, we must still be turning off those fickle swing voters. We must triangulate more so those rabid lambs won’t scare away Middle America!”
What scarcrow said @15. The 5/4 balance has certainly shifted towards oppression….
Whiney Joe agreed with the GOP that the Democrats were targeting the absentee votes of servicemembers during the Florida brouhaha. It shut down the absentee-ballot-contesting process. Incroyable!
Morris Sheppard, I left Cocoa a mash note at 166 two threads back. ;)
Whiney Joe agreed with the GOP
Well, duh.
Jane!
Just read you’re going to be here in “Hoosierville” tonight in the other thread. Welcome. We’re not as bad as everyone says. We’re actually pretty nice people. Hope to see you if you swing throught the Windy City, maybe. Good to see you back.
OT: Before I go and read Jane’s article or anything, I should make this very important point. “Squadron” isn’t a term applied solely to units of military aircraft. It was originally applied to small cavalry units. It is still used to this day to describe some ground units in the U.S. Army.
From the Wikipedia entry:
I only mention this because I see how confused we are trying to figure out how lambs, or any hooved creature, could fly. I just wanted to resolve this issue before someone went into cognitive overload. One David Brooks at a time is all this planet can handle.
Now, speaking of the U.S. Army, we return you to your square peg, round hole dilemna.
There was some Democrats like Biden and Clinton that supported the war resolution in the Senate. There was one Democrat who passionately ADVOCATED for regime change in Iraq and that was Joe Leiberman. We know the results. Over 2500 young American men and women have died in a war that was instigated based on a pack of lies. Over 20,000 seriously maimed. We are already hearing about the veterans of the Iraq war who are homeless. And what about the thousands that will suffer seriousl psychiatric disabilities for the rest of their lives. All of this to fullfill Joe Lieberman’s NeoCon agenda. My prayer is that the people of Connecticut will send this war-monger into retirement.
Ah, Joe – how do we loathe thee? Let us count; there are so many ways. But it comes down to this: you put yourself before your party, and your country.
Mary, just gotta say – you are humor-impaired like Ned Lamont is a DLC autobot.
The very first thing that told me Lieberman was a wanker par excellence was his teaming up with Lynne Cheney to form the American Council of Trustees and Alumni.
Then there were his threats to defund the SEC if Arthur Leavitt instituted a few new rules that marginally might have required some additional accountability from his favorite
clientscampaign contributors. Then there was the phony moralizing over Clinton’s indiscretions. He practically leapt into the well of the Senate to be the first to tell the country how necessary it was to put Clinton in stocks in the town square. Puritanism and priggishness are a nasty combination.
And on, and on, and on.
The vote for the war is not deal breaker for me either. Both votes for first and second Gulf wars were tough to judge realistically, wthout hindsight getting in the way. Here is my list:
1) sneaky cynical maneuvers on Alito and bankruptcy bill,
2) dishonest pandering on reproductive rights (I think I am somewhat more conservatie here than most FDL people, but the extreme gravity of the issues involved -what is right balance of the two interests- means dishonesty on this topic is for all practicle purposes unforgivable in my book
3) delusional irresponsible nonsense on Iraqi war over last year (not the vote, but the BS-ing around about the situation when the country is in a serious dilemma after 3 years of negligence by administration. If someone thinks that = “all about the war vote” then they are being intentionally obtuse)
I’m pretty sure Joe is to the right of Specter, and I would happily remove Specter’s heart with an ice cream scoop.
Tweety will BE ON the Colbert Repor Tuesday night…OK Stephen ROAST TWEETY REAL GOOD
hehehe
but naval squadrons exist too! Sheep can swim (can’t they?) so maybe Brooks was talking about rabid lambs at sea?
1) sneaky cynical maneuvers on Alito and bankruptcy bill,
I would love to see some kind of definitive statistical breakdown of how Joe voted when it didn’t count (i.e., not close or after cloture) vs. when it *did* count (i.e., close or for cloture).
Jane,
“I’m driving from Starbucks to Starbucks — it’s like herding a caravan of poodles through the desert, looking for T-Mobile WiFi.”
I hope you’re working on a book. Road trips have changed over the years. I’m glad you’re back, brimmig with piss and vinegar, and coming up on one of the most important political campaigns in recent American history, one which you’ve already helped considerably.
I just sent Ned another $20.
There are a lot of defense industry workers in eastern connecticut and they should not be ignored… I tend to think that they are not as anti war as most of us… Also the insurance industry is from Hartford do there are a lot of repug big biz types…
What is the strategy to go after these votes is at all?
Perhaps if the GOTV works it might not matter… dunno. We need ned!
Can’t they put limpballs in jail for violation of his court agreement to behave nicely?
Olberman is too funny…He just said the drugs found on loonbaugh could be anything from Viagra to Vagisil…LMAO!
FWIW: Joenertia was a strong proponent of NAFTA!
I wish I could impute nefarious intent to the effort of traditional media types to make the blogosphere’s opposition Joe-nertia “all about the war,” but if I had to guess I’d say it was more due to abject laziness and a lack of native curiosity.
I seriously think they’ve been paid off, not for this particular story, but for long-term biased reporting. It’s the simplest explanation for their unending willingness to report ridiculous lies, while the truth is evident to any halfwitted observer who has had a pulse for the last five years.
“I’m pretty sure Joe is to the right of Specter, and I would happily remove Specter’s heart with an ice cream scoop.”
Eli,
I think one of those funky spoons for making melon salad balls would work better.

good point about the sea lambs, but I don’t think that was what Brooks meant. You couldn’t have rabid sea lambs, since sea mammals are not prone to rabies. I’m sure Brooks was not advocating something so illogical. That would be just silly.

More size-appropriate, anyway.

Cujo359 — wiki is a little off. I recall the 1st Calvalry Division — composed of several Brigades, each of which might have several Battalions, each of which had 4-6 companies, and each company might have several squads (about 15-25 soldiers each). That was VN era. But if you’re 1st Cav Div, you do fly — in choppers — and dangle your feet off the side. Never saw lambs, though. However, recruiting standards have changed since then, so . . .
I seriously think they’ve been paid off, not for this particular story, but for long-term biased reporting. It’s the simplest explanation for their unending willingness to report ridiculous lies, while the truth is evident to any halfwitted observer who has had a pulse for the last five years.
Why would they need to be paid off when their owners and high-level bosses are all Republicans?

EPU’d crosspost at TBogg:
Michelle Malkin can be sufficiently criticized as evil without slurring mentally ill people:
And speaking on behalf of bipolar/ manic-depressives everywhere, which I can do since it’s June and I’m in mania, leave the mental illness out of it.
You can simply describe her as evil, with a dark and bitter soul.
Mental illness => sympathy.
Evil public speaker => villify/deport.
See? Easy.

As someone pointed out a day or so ago, it’s revolting and pathetic to pretend that siding with the party with a stranglehold on all three branches of government is some kind of courageous independent stand.
scarecrow @ 5:38 pm (#55) – There are both squads (units of 9-12 people) and squadrons (company- or battalion-sized specialty units). There’s a Wikipedia entry for the U.S. Army that sort of explains this. There’s a note at the top asking someone to rewrite the thing, so read carefully. You’ll note that the other link in my previous comment has a brief TOE listing. It lists far more vehicles than a squad could possibly drive.
Really, an ice cream scoop is more of a brain removal tool. For a heart it would probably be best to use a grapfruit spoon and some salad tongs. Or so I’ve heard. I’m just guessing, really.

I will defer to your judgment. I’m pretty lousy with tools.
scarecrow @ 5:44 pm (#63) – While the idea of a naval squadron is a bit vague (it usually consists of two or more ships), it does exist. I guess, like cleter, that this was just too silly even for Brooks. Cavalry units, OTOH, do have at least a passing relationship with hooved animals.
So, Limbaugh’s got a limp bough?
‘Only dopes use dope’

I imagine the following late-in-the-primary-season Lamont ad:
Gritty production value, hand held cam, cinema verite style: It is night on a street, raining. Siren blarring. As the camera swings around, an abulance comes around a corner at the end of the street and speeds past. Pulls into the emergency room drive about a half a block away.
Shot two: inside the hospital, doors burst open and in rush EMTs with a gurney. Nurses rush to them and direct them into a room. Police come in after the stretcher and a Doctor rushes up, back to camera, and asks what happened.
Police Officer 1: It bad, I haven’t seen anything like this before….
Police Officer 2 (not letting P.O. one finish): Beaten, raped, looks like she was stabbed in the shoulder with a knife…
P.O 1 (continuing) but she’s tough, she’s gonna make it, right Doc? She’s a tough kid, Jeez, don’t let this ruin her life, she’s so young — younger than my daughter…
P.O. 2: Don’t let this ruin her life, Doc….
Man comes running in the same door, drenched from the rain: “Where’s my daughter? Is she OK? Where is she officer?!
reverse shot of the Doctor — it’s Lieberman:
Well, I’m sorry boys, she’s gonna have to take a bus to another hospital. I am sure she won’t mind, right?
Narrator: Don’t Let Lieberman ruin your daughter’s life. Vote for Ned Lamont.

Hi, Jane. It’s good to see you in fine posting form. What will it take for the MSM to “get” that Joementum is an obselete, out-of-touch anachronism who no longer represents his constituents (other than, perhaps, the defense industry, the pharmaceutical industry and the financial industry)? Rabid frothing antiwar lambs attack George W. Bush’s favorite “Democrat.” At Kos’s orders, I suppose. Yawn.
Well, on to the subject at hand. After reading the SchumerWatch article, I find it interesting, as in mildly insane, that Schumer would think that most people in Missouri or Montana would be watching Connecticut as a way of figuring out whom to vote for. Yes, there probably are three or four people in each state who might be influenced by such things, but it seems far more likely they’ll be thinking about whatever affects them in Missouri or Montana. I certainly don’t watch Connecticut to figure out how I’m going to vote. I know where my incumbents stand, and if I don’t like them I can find out where their opponents stand.
Ugh, please, no prison rape jokes.
What we tolerate among the incarcereated so blithely amounts to cruel and unusual punishment by looking the other way, and it does us no credit to make sport of it.

a naval squadron is a grouping of large ships — a grouping of smaller ships is a flotilla. So swimming sheep would be in squadrons and aquatic rabid lambs would travel in flotillas. Brooks is indeed a confused man !

Lieberman is Ann Coulter’s favorite Democrat too. Never forget that one.

Cujo — you’re right! I conclude that Brooks is just too subtle for me. We don’t know if we’re supposed to fly or swim. And this is the threat to the [New] Republic?
Can you imagine us all showing up at Lamont headquarters to volunteer? “Uh, Ned, what are all those sheep doing here?”

He may not be there tonight. I doubt Matthews will be given that both TV Guide and TCR’s official website say it is Mark Boweden.
No need to stay up late for nothing. I am sure there will be video of it up ASAP even if he is on the show.
Dam Jane came within 30 miles.
The first time I went negative on joe was when he was first up to put down Clinton for some thing that was none of his business. The only reason for this was political hay.
Then I started paying attention and saw that he very often would vote to deregulate something, like for instance the accounting industry. Then years later enron happens.
Gore has got to be embarrassed about such a pick still.

Drudge is a capitalist. At some point (soon? now?) he is going to start the red siren thing on all the republican slime ’cause that’s where the future of yellow journalism is.
Argument against report puzzles NYT editors
“In a note on the paper’s Web site Sunday, executive Editor Bill Keller said the Times spent weeks discussing with Bush dministration officials whether to publish the report.”
“Keller said the administration also rgued “in a half-hearted way” that disclosure of the program “would lead terrorists to change tactics.”
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/200….._reporters
Someday, every interesting presidential administration gets its history written, and they will describe how that administration conducted its business. I wondered what will be written about the GW Bush administration. Mark Twain’s Pudd’n head Wilson came to mind.
I will sell you DOWN THE RIVER!

You ought to be sold down the river.

He sold me down de river
In almost no time his flowing reasonings carried him to the point of even half believing he was doing ___________ a splendid surreptitious service in selling her ‘down the river.’
he’ll sell YOU down de river, en you kin see how you like it!
As soon as the Governor understood the case, he pardoned ____________ at once, and the creditors sold him down the river.

f course, its not just this one case, its cumulative. Note also that it can be read two ways, depending on whether the subject is domestic or foreign policy.
cbl#106…that is what has their heads exploding…”Drudge has it” their talking points man…..
This is hysterical. They just had a commercial about the 11pm news that said. “Limbaugh caught again”….I wonder what that means, maybe they already have a copy of the report from the Airport security inspectors.
as a child, I always found the title of that Twain story offensive …
HELLLLLLLLLP
Can we get rid of Peter King from NY. He is the loudmouth that wants to prosecute the NY Times.
The NYTimes has splenty of blowhards we all know.. but have you heard this King creep mouth off?
What a right wing fascist… We need to get rid if him… FAST
Drudge is a capitalist. At some point (soon? now?) he is going to start the red siren thing on all the republican slime ’cause that’s where the future of yellow journalism is.
No. This is a common misconception about media in general. Advancing the Republican narrative *always* comes first, profit second. Make as much money as you can *without* damaging the Republican cause.
Bear in mind that most of the media’s parent companies (and I suspect Drudge’s as well) dwarf their media segments and/or care more about ideology than profit (i.e. Murdoch, Scaife, Moon). Their big-picture interests are much better served by getting the pro-Republican message out.
DefJef….I agree….remember he was the one that made the comment about” We count the votes”….He is really creepy.
If Jesus is the ‘lamb of God’, does that make Karl Rove the ‘foreskin of Satan’?
Patterson the Cop: “Somebody should put you behind bars.”
Motorcyle Boy: “Somebody should put the fish in the river.”
Anybody here right now from Iowa? Who is this utter idiot from Iowa named Rep. Steve King on CSPAN? The Democrats apparently are having a debate on Iraq, and King seems to be perhaps the sole Republican the majority has left behind to hold up their end of the argument. “We have no permanent bases.” All bases everywhere, even in the U.S., are “temporary” bases.
“All your base are belong to us.”
Kos told me to say it was because Lieberman sucked as a Veep candidate in 2000. He—umm I mean I can’t understand WTF Gore was thinking when he nominated ol’ Joe.
So, has anyone said anything about whether this violates the terms of Limbaugh’s slap-on-the-wrist agreement? Wasn’t that conditional?
imm,
of course you’re right – been waiting for it for a while now
and if you went over to freeperville, it’s clear some of them initially doubting the story, swallow the bitter pill of reality b/c Drudge reporting it makes it ‘fact’ to these lil facists
of course many of the comments are about the rabid venomous lambs ‘having a field day’
Get Ewes To It Asshats !
Morris Sheppard at #25, sorry, I’m not sure…

imm- at this point, I don’t know what travel method I will use to get to VacationLand. Timing is iffy at this point. I am hoping that Frequent Flier miles will allow me to make last minute plans. I’ve driven there from Boston (another time I had to wing it timing-wise), but god is that a horrible airport. Especially for renting a car. Not that you would have had that particular experience. So, alas, CT is probably not on the agenda.
#114: There are many thing offensive about that story -both the way it is written and what it portrays. I figure what it portrays is so relevent to what we see now, I thought I would chance offending people. I couldn’t think of any other book that had a more appropriate phrase or message: everyone not n the right crowd gets sold down the river. Sorry if I offended. I cleaned up the dialect since I figured that would really get me trouble.
immantenize, if you’re willing, could you drop me an email @ zennurse at gee mail dot com? I’d appreciate it. (I won’t abuse the privilege and will write tomorrow, going to sleep soon)

Both the repuke Kings are repulsive… they must go… There must be some decent candidate on the north shore of long island to oppose this jerk.
Eli, very clearly, if Rush is in possession of unprescribed prescription meds, he has violated the terms of his probation.
However, brining drugs back from another country is not a simple clear thing as one can often get perscriprions abroad.
If it is just viagra, I suspect he’s OK. If it is hydrocodone or oxy-C. Jail, m’boy, jail.
Urban Pirate says: “Limbaugh was returning on a flight from the Dominican Republic when officials found the drugs…”

Did the sources for this story mention whether he obtained the drugs in the Dominican Republic?
GSD
Im guessing that Rush drew the lowest seniority guy for the body cavity search. Since there are some well publicized issues in that area.

No mention of the House of Representatives? Does the ice cream scoop have anything to do with Rep. Peter King’s dysinhibition? Even a small scoop of frontal lobe could explain a lot…
And does the scooper have one of those flipper thingies? Maybe we could scoop out some gooper Reps’ hearts and give several extra helpings to Rep Pelosi.
The goopers won’t miss em – hell, they don’t use ‘em – and Rep. Nancy could gain the strength to stand up with her constituents and oppose the war.
For help with the surgical details, Billy Frist could walk us through over the phone – if he’s not torturing pet cats again.

I apologize for posting a comment above in the name of the honorable Kos. It was an accident. Last night during Late Nite I posted a comment in the name of Kos that was clearly farcical in nature and not meant to be taken seriously as a post by Kos. Even though I changed my name back to neurophius, my computer apparently still thinks I am posing as Kos. Please rest assured that I will not do that again. Now, come on, computer, my name is neurophius…

King – took 4 ballots at the state convention to nominate him but he won re-election handily – endorsed by the DesMoines Register who now regret and call him extremist … Like Joe McCarthy: King claimed that history showed McCarthy – whose numerous allegations of Communists operating within Government Departments and the Military ended many careers in the 1950’s – to be “a hero for America”

Jane, if you are looking for a Starbucks in Pittsburgh,
there is one just west of Carnegie Mellon University
on Forbes Ave — lots of hotspots there (I found three
different open hotspots in October, so didn’t have to
sign up for Tmobile) plus the usual tmobile etc.
Downside is that parking can be tough around there:
perhaps it won’t be too bad with it being summer….
And there are some nice parks nearby to take the

King claimed that history showed McCarthy – whose numerous allegations of Communists operating within Government Departments and the Military ended many careers in the 1950’s – to be “a hero for America”
This is one of those things that should automatically disqualify someone from public office.
no source of course cbl, that’s from Drudge. He changed his headline.
egregious,
you forgot the tv viewing habits of those who watch World Cup
why I hate Joe?
because he first built his career playing liberal consumer activist attorney general while prosecuting friends of mine in the anti-trident campaign then … since his buddy Chris Dodd wanted to keep his own Senate seat, he blithely turned hard right and swiftboated Lowell Weicker – an honorable and extremely good Senator – just to get a seat for himself. No morals but loves to play Mr. Morality.
Some of us have been waiting for Ned for a long time but we are so glad we have him now!

*ilson-unlike his contemporaries, Sam Clemens actually traveled the globe, and met people who were not Americans.
The first time I really heard about Joe Lieberman was when Al Gore (or maybe it was the DLC) selected Joey to be Al’s running mate in 2000.
I like Al, and compared to Bush, it was no contest, but when he selected Joe Lieberman, I began to have doubts.
It was really simple. Joey is orthodox. Like Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, James Dobson, Osama bin Laden, the Taliban’s Muhammed Omar, etc etc etc.
After all the terrorist threats (and attacks, like the first WTC attack and abortion clinic attacks) during the 1990s from orthodox types of one sort or another, I realized that all orthodox types are a danger to our democracy. Why? Because they all share the same rigid attitude that everyone else must become de facto members of their orthodox branch of whatever religion, whether people want to or not.
The orthodox tend to be bullies. It’s either their way or the highway…or even six-feet-under-the-ground way. They all call for censoring or actually censor the same things. They seem to find the same things offensive, thus tending to be highly intolerant. And because of this attitude, they tend to not get along very well with others in any society, but especially have trouble getting along with others in a freedom-loving, equality-embracing democracy.
This is why I almost didn’t vote for the Gore/Lieberman ticket in 2000. Gore was great, but Lieberman was just another orthodox religious nut, one that our country didn’t need one heart beat away from the presidency, in my opinion. So I held my nose, and voted for Gore/Lieberman anyway in 2000, because (being from Texas) I knew that any Bush administration would be a hundred times worse than Gore/Lieberman.
Anyway, this is my beef with Joey Lieberman. And all his votes alongside the Republican Christian Right fanatics keep proving, to me at least, that all orthodox types think the same way, censor the same things, and therefore cannot be trusted to honor our Constitution, the Bill of Rights and the core principle of our freedom-loving democracy…the separation of church and state.
Thus, if I was able to vote between Ned Lamont and Joe Lieberman, and since we already know where Joey stands on the separation of church and state issue, I would vote for and hope Ned Lamont feels just as strongly as I do that the separation of church and state is essential to our remaining a “true” democracy, so we don’t become some theocratic, totalitarian perversion, completely opposite what our founding fathers intended for our nation.
Manchester airport is the best airport in the East. A complete joy to fly in/out of with nice people, too!

wesgpc- I have to confess I haven’t been following earlier comments. I hope you didn’t mean to insult *ilson by the latest one. Both of you are great contributors to FDL. And both of you can stick up for yourselves. So, it is probably wrong of me to step into this in any way. But, sadly, many of us, certainly myself included, have lost our cool of late, one way or the other. Not so hard to understand, really, given all of the bad news. Right now, I am hoping for a bit of good news, come the CT primary. Assuming that if I fly into Logan, the plane doesn’t land in the mud. Which has happened before.
Wow, what a night. And now Joe S. backs AC up on the widows.
Holy Joe wont turn a light switch off or on during the Sabbath. While it “neither beggars my purse, breaks my leg or endangers my immortal soul” it is plain weird !
Skippety skipping to the end to say I don’t really buy lack of intellectual curiosity as a blanket excuse for the shabby state of the Fourth Estate.
Certainly, there are plenty of intellectual midgets like my new favorite pinata, Brooksie, but I think a lot of it has to do with plain old garden variety fear.
Fear of unemployment, fear of ridicule, fear of sources that dry up if you don’t let them dick you around enough.
Fear can be overcome, but it’s going to take more carrots and sticks I think, for journalists to fully realize that the First Amendment protects them for a very specific reason.
Because they are supposed to guard against a government run amok.
We know they see what’s going on, even in the bubble. We know they can write well enough (except for Brooksie) to pass the info on.
We don’t know if they can find the guts to stand and deliver for their readers, and the Constitution that protects them and us.
I’ll stand with them. But if they break ranks and run, I’m going to be unforgiving of the desertion.
Or, perhaps I’ve been watching my Sharpe’s DVDs with a little too much enthusiasm…
“The point is these women, Cindy Sheehan, and Murtha are being used as human sheilds.”
#192: can’t resist, still here. Absolutely. Want to read Twain’s reaction to racism with the bark on -Read Clemens of the Call: Mark Twain in San Francisco. It has his newspaper columns, and reaction to the racism he saw around him just as he himself was turning from a racist into an egalitarian. Makes any other Twain seem very mild by comparison.
We need another Twain to portray what is happening now. Evrything I see is too polite. Twain once had to apologize for saying the US should change its flag to the skull and crossbones and be honest about itself. Need something like that now. Stewart and Colbert way too polite.

It was my impression that the commenter above who said, “Maybe he should take a cue from Russ Feingold” meant, maybe he should decline to endorse Lieberman, as Feingold recently did.

Whoa, then she’s really lying, because she’s 49.
I could care less, usually, but I hate it when liars get away with obvious lies.

“Now, if FDL wants to take this (AC) on, maybe they will be able to engender the respect of the real leftists.”
I’m reasonably certain I’d qualify for “real leftist”.
The DLC sorts would likely agree – when they came to LA in 2000 with Joe for Veep, large street protests met the convention.
I was part of the committee that set up the convergence space – the multi-story building rented for the peaceful activities of the 2000 DNC convention protesters.
Once the building was up and running, I changed hats and co-coordinated the medical teams for the protests.
FDL earned my repsect the first day I read it.
(If the “real leftists” are the alphabet soup of Marxist splinter groups, then I admit I don’t qualify. The Marxist/Communist groups did show up to the convergence space planning meetings – trying to dominate the agenda and meetings. The only thing they wanted to discuss was selling their tired propaganda in a non-commercial space.
The Marxist/Communist groups were not allowed to derail the meetings, group, or protests. I’m sure their handlers drove them off to show up at the next big demos that year.
I love seeing provacateurs lose.)
If I find out that Schumer is pressuring Lamont to drop out, that will officially be the last time I ever send a fucking red cent to the DSCC.
You hear that, Chuck?
Or if he supports Lieberman as an Independent over the Democratic nominee.
I didn’t see a link to Ned Lamont’s new commerical:
Look Who’s Talking: President Bush or Senator Lieberman?
with all those other democratic senators to choose from, what were the odds?
Were you even paying attention to the topic?
Sorry for going Off Topic but John over at C&L has a very powerful new video up from CSPAN about pre-war intelligence.

Definitely worth a watch. Aloha Valley Girl
GSD at 3, thank you for that quote. I only had time to scan that article today and I missed it.
Joe and Holy Joe are fair game so far as we keep our criticism political…
the mind set demonstrated should be topics of discussion but the observations of ritual should be given some slack.
I’m thinking we should leave religious practice out of the mix:

Holy Joe wont turn a light switch off or on during the Sabbath. While it “neither beggars my purse, breaks my leg or endangers my immortal soul” it is plain weird !
It’s not weird, it’s observing the commandment regarding fire (energy, power, etc.) on the Sabbath.
Saying it’s weird is like saying Seventh Day Adventists are weird to meet together on Saturday rather than Sunday.
The ramifications of orthodoxy are fair game.
The instances where Holy Joe is NOT observant are fair game… the observations he chooses NOT to be observant are fair game, but “plain weird” is a bit of slander for an observation he chooses to make.
Kirk @ 240-the “real” leftists don’t have blogs or newspaper columns. They are the working folk, who are trying to raise children and run businesses in the shadow of multi-national corporations who don’t give a shit about them. FDL need to champion these people; the ones that are living from paycheck to paycheck. They have no champions. They also have no time or energy to pursue the liberation of America. FDL and the rest of the leftists need to make the sacrifices needed to free the working class.
America needs leaders, not writers.
Veering slightly off topic:
Who tipped off the terrorists that we were spying on their bank accounts? The NYT wasn’t the first. It was W, in a speech just 10 days after 9-11. It was the Patriot Act. It was BusinessWeek in Oct 2001. And more.

skippy is on the record as disliking lieberman in 2002, for his ties to big money corporations, and his love for the dlc, as well as his distaste for al gore.
this was many many months before the war.
During the 2000 Florida recount, Lieberman went on the Sunday talk shows, and%u2014without having conferred first with Gore or anyone%u2014said that all the military votes should be counted, even though many of them were illegal, in many cases because they had been cast after election day.It was a really important issue and he threw away enough votes to have made Gore the winner.
It’s simple. Collaborators must be made an example of.
Nonsense. The only reason the banshees are wailing for Joe Lieberman is that he sees to the mountain top.
When Holy Joe said Howard Dean was “in his own spider hole of denial” for telling the truth that the capture of Saddam Hussein didn’t make us any safer. THAT is when I first wanted to see Joementum (sounds like a laxative, is in fact the product of taking one) kicked to the curb.
What can one say about a politician who is in the loving hands of AIPAC?
Schumer. I want to say something, but I am too angry.
There is every reason to support Lamont. Everything that Lieberman stands for is bad for us locals. The cutting and slashing of public funds for the benefit of Dick Cheny and Halliburton and their ilk is IMHO devastating to cities like New Haven. (& Lamont has experience in the Bridgport school system so he is not unaware and really seems to get it.) Things have gotten worse. Much worse since the Clinton era. And what’s more, a lot of people are more worried about soldiers and people abroad and in New Orleans than themselves. But let’s not forget the frightening effects of Medicare D on the elderly. Or the scare effects of Bush’s social security “plan” which Lieberman supported/supports. Or Lieberman’s negative attitude toward gays and same-sex marriage which sanctions dangerous troglodyte attitudes among the population. & Then there is Alito.
If Schumer can support all of the above (& I am not even finished), then I say he is not even a Democrat. Sorry for the rant.
As a Democrat from Ct all I can say is that the elephant in the room is that Holy Joe represents a country in the Middle-East and not Ct. I am a supporter of that country’s right to be free and independent but I want two Senators in Washington representing our concerns not one(Dodd, who by the way is off on a trip somewhere thinking he could be President,LOL, must be the Washington air).
If anyone needs a quick pick me up, Howie Klein has a post with a clip of the Tester vs. Burns debate. Tester slamdunks it. It’s a very, very good feeling.

Very late but the thread doesn’t say closed
and the comment by *ilson, as moderator is just out of line:
“Holy Joe wont turn a light switch off or on during the Sabbath. While it “neither beggars my purse, breaks my leg or endangers my immortal soul” it is plain weird!” At least if you are going to attempt joke insults (viewing your comment in best light) try and do as well as the Helen Thomas jibe, bring all the issues together, and make people laugh even though they know its not nice. I just don’t get the constant stream of base humor of conjuring up Rove’s fat ass, Rush’s limp balls, or mAnnliness. “Well, Savage does it”" is not a redeeming answer.
So from the late trend of comments it is clear that Joe’s stand on Iraq war has ‘nothing’ to do with the anger. Is it actually because 1) as a relgious fundamentalist he is the same as OBL, or 2) is it because of ‘dual loyalties’, or rather 3) he’s just not a “real Democrat”. Thanks for the insight. (and yes, I did read all of the other reasons cited, much more than I knew before, by why is every complaint backed by assumption that Joe is somehow deceitful if his judgement, belief, or information is different than yours? – and you are still going to support him if he wins the primary?) And yes, Democrats in other states are paying attention – its starting to look something like two drivers fighting over the steering wheel as the bus goes over the cliff. Reid’s “consequences” comment may have a different cutting edge if you’re not careful, and respectful of your own team and thier supporters. Insult are what is remembered after the politics of the lost election are long forgotten. You’re right to scramble away from the frame of a war litmas (sp) test, but the accusative vitreol on that point
This is the type of crap that gets reflected back on the party in an election. You demand Joe to be a “good Democrat” and pledge endorsement while you savage the very core morality of the person who is an 18 yr. incumbant D. Senator. If you are all so right on all of the issues that you broadly claim are the real reasons to knife Joe, why not just stick to the facts and issues rather than the slime? Slime won’t change my mind, but unspun facts could.
Moderator – please take public resposibility for your attack on religious beliefs. Correct me if you think I’m wrong.
