In the face of today’s sad news about Jane’s mom, I initially suggested to the Admin team that we declare a 24-hour moratorium on posting to show respect for the family. Christy checked with Jane and it turns out that’s the absolute last thing she wants us to do. Well, Jane, we love you and our thoughts and prayers are with you at this time. And if you say carry on, then by god, that’s what we’ll do.
Which brings me to tonight’s topic. As netroots activists, we hear a lot of talk about the importance of "reframing the arguments", and I couldn’t agree more. But so few of our advocates in the public sphere seem to be taking that advice to heart. The whole "Lie and Die" thing is a nice try, Mr. Kerry, it’s short and it rhymes, sure, but it is still a response to the GOP’s charges of us being "cut and run" liberals. It still places us in the argument in a defensive crouch.
As long as we continue to form our strategies and sound bites around defending ourselves, the GOP will always win. They have consistently set the tone for every debate from gay marriage to the War in Iraq by arriving there first, seizing the moral high ground, and hurling accusations, which the vichy Dems seem more than willing to waste their time parrying, ducking and weaving around in a doomed effort to justify themselves to the electorate, no matter how absurd and disingenuous the accusations are. We always enter the debate on terms set by the Republicans. If we continue to do that, we will always, always lose.
Listen to me, Democrats! Never defend. Never explain. Attack, attack, attack! When a right-winger accuses you of something, back up, reframe, ignore the charges, just ATTACK. How hard can this be? Ann Coulter doesn’t waste her time defending herself against our accusations. Neither does Rush Limbaugh. They launch their attacks and the terms of the debate are set from there, and once again, as liberals, we are bringing knives to a gun fight.
To whit:
A Republican says, "All you liberals are cut-and-run traitors! You don’t support the troops!"
Instead of frantically beginning to tap dance and show that you’re not a traitor and that you do support the troops, you fire back, "Why are you Republicans such cowards? Your leaders are all draft-dodgers who’ve never fired a shot at anything but a bunch of canned quails and old lawyers. You’re using the troops as human shields against the midterm elections! Do you like seeing our brave men and women in uniform slaughtered and killed? Or are you just too much of a coward to face the consequences of your failed policies in Iraq? Which is it? Do you just hate the soldiers or do you hate your constituents?"
There. You have just put the burden of proof on the Repugnican that he/she isn’t a coward and that they don’t hate the troops. Then you set up a false dichotomy that they can’t answer without looking like a fool.
Or say you’re lucky enough to have squared off against Ann Coulter. (I dream of four minutes of live TV with Ann Coulter!) She says, "Liberals hate science! Liberals suck terrorist dicks! Liberals eat babies! *SQUAAAAAAAACK!! SCREEECH!! AWK!! AWK!!*"
You say, "Ann, why are you such a fascist?"
She, of course, will say, "I’M not a fascist! LIBERALS ARE FASCISTS!" (Which is exactly what she would say, trust me.)
You calmly respond, "But Ann, you advocate everything the Nazis did; internment camps, physical intimidation, silencing of media outlets, and murder. Everything the Nazi Party said about the Jews, you have said about liberals. You even look sort of like some kind of Aryan Dominatrix. You’re like a Brownshirt pin-up girl."
And then sit back and watch as she goes nuclear. Now, the onus is on her to prove she’s not a fascist, which is exactly what she can’t do. (Cos she is.) You don’t respond to charges by Ann Coulter. You attack. You treat her with all the respect and courtesy that she would treat you.
It doesn’t really even matter if your accusations are true, just whether or not they’re truthy. (We can play that game too.) It helps, of course, if what you’re saying is true, but it’s not a requirement. Study the work of Karl Rove sometime.
Republicans are cowards. They’re soft. They grew up sleeping on huge billowy piles of other people’s money, tucked in by their immigrant nannies, while Mumsy and Daddy were off at the The Club getting stoned on whiskey sours and arrogance. They won’t have the stomach for this fight. But if we continue to equivocate, back-pedal, and sputter in frustration at the outrageousness of their assertions, we will remain the party of Juan Williams, Mara Liasson, Alan Colmes, and all the other Whiny Little Bitch liberals.
Is this clear? Any liberal pundits or Democratic strategists reading this, you hear me?
NEVER defend.
NEVER explain.
ATTACK! ATTACK, ATTACK, ATTAAAAACK!!!!
We have a reputation as a bunch of weak-kneed cowards because we keep trying to answer the charges against us and failing, because the charges simply aren’t true. You can’t defend yourself against baseless accusations. "Why don’t liberals support the troops?" is a question like, "When did you stop beating your wife?" Unanswerable, because it issues from a set of false precepts, and any attempt to answer it is going to be like, as my brother says, "boxing a turd". And that’s the number one lesson that we can take from the right wingers. They don’t waste their time answering our charges. Don’t dignify their charges with an answer. It’s time to seize the narrative, by force. Stop trying to justify yourself to those people. Treat them with contempt and disgust. Flick their accusations aside and then go for the jugular.
"Reverend Dobson, you’re afraid of homosexuals because of your own secret homosexual tendencies, aren’t you?"
"Ms Malkin, would it be fair to say that you hate immigrants because you yourself are an ‘anchor baby’ of immigrant parents?"
"Mr. Hinderaker, this discussion of the DHS is interesting, but what I really want to know is why your kids aren’t fighting in Iraq and supporting the troops in a meaningful way?"
See how easy it is, kids? The fact of the matter is that the people we are fighting are hurting our country and others. Their ignorance and arrogance is costing us our democracy and our lives, not to mention the lives of thousands of innocent people in other nations. We do not have to answer to them. We only have to call them to account. Stop defending yourself. The only real defense against this crowd is a good offense.
Now, go get em.
Remember, this is our enemy:
(Young Republicans at play in their natural habitat.)
Are you afraid of these people? Really?

yay TRex!
tough day…
My day dream about debating Frau Ann is to be second speaker and have the opportunity to say to her, “Ann, you ignorant slut.”
fitz…please
Instead….
Reframe that to “Ann, why are you such an ignorant slut?”
T-Rex: CUT & RUN LIBERALS: Here is an interesting argument for reframing the argument.
From newsforreal.com
I want to be perfectly clear about this. We liberals really do want to cut and run.
I admit it. We are cut and run liberials, just as Karl Rove alleges. More than that, I am proud of it and encourage more Americans to join us.
We are liberal/progressives and, damn it, we want to cut and run:
We want to cut and run from the borrow and spend, borrow and spend economics of the GOP that have piled an additional $4 trillion in debt onto our children, grand children and great grand children.
We want to cut and run from the unholy alliance between the GOP and energy companies that have left us at the mercy of a bunch of medieval Islamic tribal leaders who run their own countries like feudal states and treat their own people — especially their women — worse than Americans treat farm animals.
We want to cut and run from a national health care system designed by and for giant health care and pharmaceutical interests, that enriches a few while leaving 45 million Americans without affordable health insurance.
We want to cut and run from a government which, over the past six years, has become not only increasingly closed to public scrutiny and accountability, but overtly hostile and suspicious of citizens who insist on either.
We want to cut an run from a style of governance that not only plays on fear and petty prejudices, but cultivates and exploits them for cheap political gain. The cynical, dishonest purposeful pitting of majority populations against minority groups on the grounds that they don’t share “American values,” and then later deny responsibility for the entirely predictable destructive consequences of those tactics.
We want to cut and run from policies that view science and scientists as adversaries whose findings must sometimes be suppressed, while embracing, even endorsing, religious dogmas that have no basis in fact whatsoever.
We want to cut and run from GOP economic polices that have handed the already wealthy a couple of trillion dollars in tax cuts while leaving working Americans payroll tax virtually untouched.
There are a lot more reasons listed at the link…2nd story down
http://www.newsforreal.com/
Yes, the gloves have definately come off. No more playing nice. The civil debate only works when you play by the rules. And the pen/blog is still mightier than the sword…
check out this great review of “Godless” by Betty Bowers: http://www.bettybowers.com/coulter.html
this would seem to be the perfect marriage. Democrats can’t agree on anything, so they would be inherently incapable of a unified attacking strategy. The attacks would then be all over the place.
On the other hand, this administration has given us so many things worthy of attack…
Attacking is a policy of almost (sadly) endless possibilities.
EXCELLENT, EXCELLENT TRex! I couldn’t agree more. Dean does a great job of this – I think. He throws unfounded claims right back in the pundits face.
And, as much as I hate to be a cynic, I don’t know of a single Dem congresscritter that will ever implement your strategy.
It’s getting rather old.
:::waving to Jane::: Get some rest if you can.
FIGHT BACK
On the other hand, this administration has given us so many things worthy of attack
Attacking is a policy of almost (sadly) endless possibilities.
We live in what the military calls “a target-rich environment”. It’s seriously way past time to stop making excuses to the rightards when their own behavior is so patently inexcusable.
#4 doran – LOL! You can just see her sour milk response if her mike was off and she had to sit and listen for a full three minutes of rebuttle!
Your first instinct on hearing of Jane’s mother’s death was a moratorium on posts? Are you schizoid, man? Then you write about being on the attack? The Cheney Administration would just use it as a great excuse to kill all your relatives, one per day until the elections.
I apologize if this seems disrepectful to Jane, Jane’s mom, and/or her family, but you’ve got to look inward on this, too. You clearly haven’t really internalized the attack position, nor truly understood the depths to which the enemy will reach.
Why can’t we figure out a way to put the GOP on the defensive? Why can’t we make them have to defend themselves (outside a court of law?)
I wholeheartedly agree with everything except the ‘truthiness’ portion.
It just isn’t required.
Ann Coulter is a fascist.
Republicans do send other peoples kids to die.
There are no WMD in Iraq.
And there would be scarce material for conventional explosive IEDs had we bothered to guard a large weopens depot – but we were looking for WMD that DIDN’T EXIST
Iraq became a terrorist breeding and training center only after we invaded
There is no tie between Sadaam and al Quaida
(except that special corner of Hell they will share with WHIG
…
oh, and what doran@4 says
heh
Beautiful! The best defense is a good offense.
Seriously, I heard Paul Hackett on Ed Schultz’s show once . He gets it. That man needs a radio show, hell, even a TV show.
OHHHHOHHHH YUM
I love that term, rethuglicans ‘using our troops as human shields for the midterm elections’ Major meeeoooowwww!
Thank God I abhor fire arms…the debate would end quickly and abruptly!
ohyeah,fuckbush
I love the “anchor baby” line….bwaaaaaaaaah
Let’s explain to everyone what the difference is between “supporting the troops” and “supporting the defense contractors.” And that supporting the troops means bringing them out of the hellhole Bush has put them in, not doing the same thing and hoping it’ll work out.
I like the term “Pharisees” to refer to the Christianist right — religious people know it, and they’ll know it fits.
A variation on what somebody sd somewhere today — The Repubs are the cut and run ones. Cut taxes on the rich and run the army/country into the ground.
Rubber-stamp Republicans is great, I think.
We want to isolate the terrorists instead of isolating ourselves. Bush and the arrogant reupbicans have thrown away an alliance that’s lasted ever since WW II.
In your heart, you know the Republicans are for the rich. Look at everything they’ve done for the past six years and tell me one thing that their rich cronies didn’t want them to do.
Are you better off now than you were when six years ago?
Gas prices have doubled since George Bush came into office. Doubled. It doesn’t take a lot to figure out why that happened, when you’ve got a President, Vice-President, and Secretary of State who were all oil company executives.
Your first instinct on hearing of Jane’s mother’s death was a moratorium on posts? Are you schizoid, man? Then you write about being on the attack?
Have you ever heard of a moment of silence? Originally I had planned a comedic post for tonight, and that seemed tasteless and disrespectful. But when I got the message from Jane to go ahead, it made sense.
Back off, buddy. You’re not the one writing the posts.
Although you mention:
The truth is so fugly that ‘truthy’ can stand aside!

Well, there are some hints that the Democratic leadership is starting to pick up on the theme of “the Republicans think we don’t need to make any changes in Iraq.” I got that in an email from Hillary, of all people:
Yeah, there’s a lot of mishmash about changing course so we can “win,” but let’s face it, Americans hate to lose, and I can’t disagree that “declare victory and get out” is likely to go over better than “declare that Bush lost the war and get out.”
Josh Marshall at TPM found a similar theme, even clearer, from Sherrod Brown in Ohio. I’m cautiously optimistic. This is an attack, and if they can keep from mentioning the idiotic GOP “cut-and-run” and reinforcing it before they attack, it can work.
“Listen to me, Democrats! They launch their attacks and the terms of the debate are set from there, and once again, as liberals, we are bringing knives to a gun fight.”
1. You go, baby. That’s it. I’ve been shouting this message around here for awhile. Sometimes my tactics are a bit harsher….but as long as you’re fighting, you’re IN THE GAME.
2. This Digby person has a good companion piece to Mr. TRex’s article. Ya’ll might want to read it. It posted today.
Go get ‘em, TRex. Atta boy!
Ghostman
BTW, Fro-
Read up in the last couple days. Then fold your hands and sit quietly for a spell.
Also, W is for Wimp.
He’s afraid of changing his mind, even when he’s 100% wrong, because fake cowboys can’t look weak.
He was afraid to testify to the 9/11 Commission without Cheney in the room with him.
On 9/11, he ran like a scared rabbit.
He pretends to be cowboy, but he’s afraid of horses.
He won’t let people who disagree with him into his Administration; he won’t even let people who might disagree with him in any of his carefully-programmed public events.
Bush is a fraud. W is for Wimp.
The lines I read earlier today that stay in my mind are:
Republicans are more concerned about saving face than saving lives.
So they choose to sit and watch.
Bank of America cancelled my debit card on Friday. They said their information was compromised and a great number of cardholders had their data compromised. I had no money all weekend. I found out Friday trying to pay a cable bill…
It was clearly a canned stump-speech line, but I still liked Mark Warner’s “we need a foreign policy that unites our friends and divides our enemies, instead of the other way around!”
T Rex,
thank you very much for carrying on – and an Ab Fab post at that god bless ya
and ya know, they should be attacked – not just b/c they’re the opposition, but they’re criminals, and many of them traitors and enemies of the state
fits nicely with the Stop Calling It A War, It’s An Occupation – as long as it’s perceived as “war” someone has to ‘lose’ and Dems remained trapped in a corner of their own painting
like many, I keep asking what have you got to lose at this point ? start screamin from the rooftops ! and I realize they are AFRAID of the Rep. response – it isn’t just the consultants telling them to STFU and coast to November, they’re actually scared – save a handful – goodness, we are going to have to get through November and then we are going to have to do some shoppin’!
Thanks again T Rex, appreciate the keep on keepin’ on
ccmask, I’m sorry to hear that. But you know, my experiences with Bank of America have almost all been like that. The giant does what it wants and it’s up to us little people to scramble around and try to cope.
I killed my account there three years ago. Now, I’m with Wachovia and I like them better.
Here is a snip from a Canadian paper, regarding the Miami infiltration (cough):
Residents living near the warehouse said the men taken into custody described themselves as Muslims and had tried to recruit young people to join their group, which seemed militaristic.
The residents said FBI agents spent several hours in the neighbourhood, showing photos of the suspects and seeking information. They said the men had lived in the area about a year.
The men slept in the warehouse, said Tashawn Rose, 29.
“They would come out late at night and exercise. It seemed like a military boot camp that they were working on there.”
“They would come out and stand guard.”
She talked with one of the men about a month ago.
“They seemed brainwashed. They said they had given their lives to Allah.”
Rose said the men tried to recruit her younger brother and nephew for a karate class.
“It was weird,” she said.
I love it!!!
Sorry to go O/T, but the NY Times just posted a blockbuster story; it’s at the LA Times web site, as well. The Bushies have been checking bank transaction records since 9/11…and not telling anybody.
When Bilbray won CA-50. There was a bunch of lame-o pundits on saying how his tough immigration stance won him the day. The dems that were around mumbled and shit. I was sitting there yelling at the TV for them to point out how Schwartzenegger cheated the Visa system when he came to the country, cut in line, and is thus an illegal alien as well. Mr. Pundit, how is Bilbray going to play with the base if I go on all these talk shows and reframe the debate to Arnie’s immigration status? It will devolve your shit into chaos and his defenders will have to do a bunch of blustering and defensive shit.
We Won The War Three Years Ago
Time To End The Occupation
Yeah, J. Frink, I just posted the link upthread. It’s a huge story. Tomorrow’s papers are going to be filled with Terror stories. eegads.
Are Christy and I the only ones who ever listened to Bauhaus?
Senator Reid…such a nice man. Wish he jabbed verbally the way he supposedly does with gloves on. Go Russ, and Dr. Dean! Now they know how to attack, I say.
We Know The Real Enemy
Bin Laden
And We Intend To Kill Him
Elect The Democrats
TRex- Another blockbuster of an article.
I am here and I am reading, at least for a while. You know where to find me.
Amen.
Remember the Truman Give ‘em Hell story.
(which I repeat from earlier today, so apologies in advance.)
Shout from audience: “Give ‘em hell Harry!”
Truman: “I don’t give them Hell. I just tell the truth about them and they think it’s Hell.”
so I say our motto should be “Truth! Truth! Truth! Truth! Truth! Truth! Right in their faces. Right in the medias faces.”
If BushCo thinks it’s an attack, or hell, that is their problem.
(Need to get barf bags and diapers for consultants and DLCers though. But those are pretty cheap.)
Agree, VG (hi!). Reading and baking a pan of brownies ;)
I agree that when attacked not to go on the defensive.
But using THEIR tactics is the same as stooping to their level. It was bad enough with the slanderous lies against the Democrats. I can’t imagine how bad it would get if Democrats use the same methods against the Republicans. This country would truly come apart and be ripe for civil war.
I’ve always found that if you stick to the truth and the facts, you’re on a higher moral ground than your adversary. You may not always win if your audience isn’t on the same moral ground, but the truth is behind you. If we don’t base our arguments on the truth than are we really better than the other side?
Dave – Just snarl when you speak the truth.
Are Christy and I the only ones who ever listened to Bauhaus?
I wondered how long it was going to take someone to get the Bauhaus reference.
LOL!
ATTACK! ATTACK, ATTACK, ATTAAAAACK!!!!
That just made me laugh. I can hear you saying it, TRex.
Just wanted to pop in and thank everyone so much for all their thoughts and prayers. We really felt sustained by them today.
I kept wanting to throw myself on the bed and cry for my mom to make it all stop, but really we were exceptionally blessed. She had her mind until the end (she was chewing my brother-in-law out just last night, then laughing about it), she wasn’t in pain, she went quickly and we got to sit with her and hold her hands through it all. I thought I couldn’t make it through and then one second progressed into the next and suddenly it was over. It was absolutely the way she wanted to go and I’m so truly grateful I got to participate in it.
Thanks SO MUCH to Christy, TRex and everyone for holding down the fort so I wasn’t worried and distracted and could spend the past few days with my mom and just really enjoy this time with her. The comment threads make me teary but they are absolutely beautiful. What a loving and special community, I feel so privileged to be a part of it.
T-Rex: Wachovia is a good idea. I just love this post. You outdid yourself.
I always say to co-workers-Name me one thing that Bush had done for the American people in 5 years? They all say the same thing–he protected us after 911. Republicans have a very big Mary spot–they are scared shit of terrorists and that is how Bush keeps them in line. It takes one to know one.
Smear them with the truth, I say.
I said this a couple threads ago
As to ann coultar: if liberalism is a religion (as she says) and she advocates killing liberals because of what we believe isn’t she practising hate speech and can she be sanctioned by state and federal law(s) for it in whatever state she spews it?
TRex – this is a classic.
Bush has no plan to win the war.
Bush wants our troops to stay and die.
Bush wants to pass the buck.
These statements have no words of more than one syllable. That may be the key to victory in November. Let’s try these out, Democratic leadership.
Oh, then there’s my old standby:
========
Had Enough?
========
I don’t want to cut and run, I want to shave and fly.
Just hope they bring home all our the weapons of minimal destruction. Every single bullet.
Agreed, TRex, but with a few caveats.
When they start raving about supporting the troops, (I get this a lot on the bluegrass site where I hang out, it being mostly conservatives)
I counter:
But I’ve supported the troops since before the invasion.
I didn’t want to send them on operation enduring shitmire. You guys DID send them.
and now that the only thing they’re doing, is killing Iraqis and getting killed themselves, while their sole purpose for being there, is to cover goatboy’s political ass, you guys want to KEEP them there.
What kind of support is that?
In fact, as the wheels keep coming off, just hammer them with “enlist!” and
“keyboard support doesn’t count; ON to Parris Island and Ramadi!!!!”
:o)
We are at the 1 year anniversary of Halliburton Dick’s “the insurgents are in their last throes”
It’s a good time to throw a party for the keyboard commandos and ask them if they think Dick got it right? kinda like:
“We know where the WMD’s are; they’re to the north and east and south, of Baghdad, somewhat…”
Point out that with the respective populations, those 1400 Iraqis who died in the sectarian violence in May, which bushCo has unleashed on Iraq, is like about 18 THOUSAND americans dying, if someone had turned the U.S. into a fucking chaos-theory petrie dish.
Ask them if, when the helicopter-on-the-roof moment comes, those of us who opposed the fucking of the cluster, can have, as a consolation prize for thousands of dead american troops, and scores of thousands of dead Iraqis, and for the $300 billion pissed into the mesopotamian desert, the small compensation of NEVER, EVER, again, hearing the conservatives complain about “wasteful government spending” on social programs.
Trex, Jane and you guys don’t have ENOUGH bandwidth to cover all the hammers we have, to beat these corporate-4th-reich dingbats even more senseless than they already are.
The Japanese contingent of 600 will be gone in about a month. The Italians will soon follow. The pressure on Blair to get the brit troops home, is becoming excruciating.
Are the asshats looking forward to supporting our troops while they hold on to a flaming, bloody, bag of shit, by themselves?
So MANY sticks to beat these assholes with…which one to use??? :o)
Christy listens to Bauhaus?

Love you Jane!
How many more Americans have to die for the Republican failure in Iraq? Simple enough?
Great advice, TRex. And if anyone whines (as they WILL) that it has been proven that Americans don’t like this negativity — and they hold Democrats and Republicans equal in this.
Well, if they supposedly think that anyway, what is the problem then? (And, of course, acting this way DOES work.)
Hi Jane.
Best. Thread. Ever.
I prefer Little Bahaus
Jane! So good to hear your virtual voice. I hope we all spend our last days the way your mom did–with her family holding her hands and without pain.
Nice to have you with us, Jane.
I absolutely agree that we should be attacking and quit trying answer their bullshit charges, but lets not stray too far into “truthiness”. Isn’t that a bit part of what we despise about the Bushies and the wingnut base? We just need to speak the truth more forcefully.
“Republican kids won’t fight in Bush’s war because, deep down, they don’t believe in it, either.”
That’s a start. Use that against any one of the chickenhawks that think it’s more important to get into Wharton than sign up. Paste-eaters, Red-Staters, the entire membership of the College Republicans, all included.
And never apologize!
Oh man – I just wanna SCREAM when democrats say something decently snarky, the rethugs DEMAND an apology – AND THEY GET IT!
Darth Cheney today on CNN – smug and smarmy and nasty and arrogant – and COMPLETELY UNREPENTENT!
That’s how they win.
Iraq is a failed occupation – Bush is trying to create an empire – empire building always fails and Bush has failed – FAILED!

Oh yes. I know the type. (And, I agree — go get them — don’t back down — they have had almost 6 years and they’re proud of…?)
big…I’ll spellcheck next time.
bad
Trex. I wish you’d give a class in this. This is the kind of advice for which people pay millions. A little background research on the person your attacking doesn’t hurt either.
Bravo!
My condolences go out to Jane and her family for their loss.
Don’t kill yourselves trying to frame the argument. You’ve got the wood; you’ve got nails; you’ve even got glue. But you don’t own the store window.
I’m a blog rat, a netroots guy and all that, but here’s the deal. Whatever comes out of the mouth of Rove, whether or not it rhymes, whether it is a lie, whether it can pass any smell test at all, the MSM will run with it incessantly for weeks and perhaps months. Whatever you or we come up with, or even Mr. Kerry, it is dead as soon as it leaves the lips. That is the problem. I love blogs, but do they really compete with ABC, CBS, NBS, FOX, MSNBC, CNN, NYT, WaPo, on and on and on.
I do not think so. We had to endure, “the blame game” for how long? Have mercy, how is this any different from “I know you are, but what am I”? If you control the media, this level of sandbox dribble passes as valid political argument. The problem is not in framing the issue; the problem is not having access to the MSM. How many Dems make good arguments every day, but if you do not read blogs and watch CSPAN you would never know. A Republican gets on cable and cannot even hint at identifying more than three of the Ten Commandments, yet he is still seen as a fine, upstanding, family-values, Christian kind of guy. If a Democrat were caught being that much of an idiot, it would be aired every night on every newscast, on every network affiliate in the entire nation.
Mr. President? When do you expect to attend your first funeral of our fallen children? Will you jump around like you need to urinate and smile when you do?
Let’s see. You Republicans control the White House, the Senate, an the House of Representatives, and you can’t balance the budget? Congratulations! If you have all the power, you get all the responsibility. And if you fail, it’s your failure. Suck it up.
The Rovian word-tricks are based on falsity, and should not be repeated even to counter them. Attack with our own – concise and ringing phrases – and based on the truth. Jesse Jackson’s great at this.
One of the wonderful things about this post, TRex, is that it’s a game everyone can play.
Are you an accountant? Have we got some books for you to look over . . .
Are you (or have you been) in the military? Let the world know what it’s like to face the enemy with less than suitable equipment . . .
Are you a lawyer? Tell us, please, how Article II of the Constitution trumps the Fourth Amendment? (I always thought the amendments trumped the original text myself, but IANAL . . .)
Are you in communications? Can you translate what Tony Snow didn’t say into sensible language? . . .
Are you a parent of a teenager? Can you come up with a way to get politicians to listen and respond when someone asks them a question . . .
As for the negativity charges
“Vote for fear”
Hi Jane – stay strong
I wish I could claim this, but… On C-SPAN a caller said:
Republicans are the “Cut and Run” party… They cut taxes and run up the debt.
Best wishes to you, Jane.
OfT, but WaPoO Chris Cillizza’s getting smacked around on his “analysis” of Lieberman’s bad week. Chris actually calls the bear ad “sound strategy,” for which many commenters have taken him to task, in many creative ways. Fun to read:

If you’re still here, Jane, big hugs for you. Even if you’re not!
My love and prayers go out to you and your family, Jane.
Mr. President, Mr. Vice President: Why aren’t YOUR children fighting right now in Iraq?
Stolen data: yes I agree with people here that the government does not need to steal from itself. However:
Private companies are doing the stealing, in order to amass large data sets to sell to
(1) the government, who then can conveniently claim no laws were broken, and obviously this excludes military data; and
(2) other companies who would be ecstatic to learn the intimate commercial and personal details of hundreds of millions of Americans.
A commenter here ?yesterday said a friend in the military had already had his bank acccount pinged. I swore because we are treating our military horribly, AND we let their personal data be stolen and sold to the vultures. SHAME.
You Republicans are bought and paid for, and not by us. Why should we trust you on anything?
Mr VP did you have your daughter come out so she could escape serving in the armed forces like you?
Wow. Great post TRex.
It would be nice if the political arean would entertain debates based on merit and facts. But this just isn’t the time. The general public doesn’t want to have to think. They want snappy rhetoric that makes them feel like winners even if they’re not and thats just what the Repubs dish out.
Speaking like this is fine and dandy when addressing talking points of the politicos, newspaper editors, and blogs. It’s a different game all together when it comes to having a conversation with your neighbors or co-workers. In the long run it gets nothing real accomplished. We need leaders with integrity across the entire political spectrum and not as many greedy hacks and good ol’ boys.
85: that’s evil. I like it.

Just to let you all know- I closed out the comments on the “Sorrow” post for now, because it’s late and it has been a stressful day. There was a lot of ugly stuff earlier, and I doubt that anyone wants to stay up all night to filter out the crap. I posted a comment: “Comments are temporarily closed, but will be reopened soon. Thanks.” Considering the outpouring of the FDL community, I hope that the comments are reopened when “backup lower level staff” are available.
So if high Clinton officials had outed a CIA agent, where would you have held the hanging?
I sat on my eyeglasses this morning and went to the optical store. The guy who fixed my glasses said he was notified that his info was compromised(he served in the air force many years ago). What a disaster…there is just no way to fight that noise. At least when the spores & anthrax attacks were going on, I was able to fill out one of those postcards and told the post office to hold my mail. Mt postman said, Oh, you’re taking a vacation” and I said no just hold my mail ntil this crap blows over.
Valley Girl are you serious people posted nasty stuff? I am dumbfounded in disbelief. I guess that is what happens when you are open to the public. Unreal.
So if you lied us into the war in Iraq, how come you can’t lie us out of it?
good night all…

I got it right away. Hell, the bauhaus reference got me to post here for the first time.
Now I have to go put on some more black clothing and eyeliner……
Another great post, TRex. Thanks. Now, how to get them to do it…

Thank you, VG and all the stagehands who moderated and filtered comments today–it’s hard to believe people would post anything vile on a thread devoted to sympathy.
Hi Jane, good to “see” you, hang in there, hon.
Mr. Pres. Don’t you just love recruiting mexicans out of mexican high schools for your military purpose?

There are many strange people in this world and some are stranger than others.
Oh, what my drill sergeant would’ve done to those fratboy azzhats in the lower photo!
It’s been a tough day for everyone here, but I’ll be able to lull myself to sleep with images of those maggots in oversize olive drab, low crawling though mud under barbed wire…
Look at those beer guts! They’d have to double-time in their sleep to pass a PT test. It’d be the ultimate challenge, trying to make soldiers out of those pasty-white tubs of goo.
I’ll say this for the Coultergeist, she’s more of a man than both of them combined on their best day. What sorry pieces of ship.
“Why are you Republicans such cowards? Your leaders are all draft-dodgers who’ve never fired a shot at anything but a bunch of canned quails and old lawyers. You’re using the troops as human shields against the midterm elections! Do you like seeing our brave men and women in uniform slaughtered and killed? Or are you just too much of a coward to face the consequences of your failed policies in Iraq? Which is it? Do you just hate the soldiers or do you hate your constituents?”
This is fabulous!
As for attack! Attack! ATTACK!!!!!!
It makes me think of the Daleks crying Exterminate! Exterminate! Exterminate!
The headline on this thread reminded me of the Miami Vice two part episode that featured G.Gordo Liddy as bad spook taking back the vid evidence of atrocity in Central America (a nod to Iran/Conta, I think). Ends w/Sonny listenning to ‘news’ that was RoveWellian…
—
That was before I started watching Max Headroom in the same timeslot…and found the ‘Blanks’….seems like a concept worth looking at:
–
from a Max Headroom FAQ
What are ‘blanks’?
Blanks are people who have either fallen off the information nets, or taken themselves off deliberately. Usually known and addressed by their first names with “Blank” as a title – Blank Reg, Blank Bruno, and Blank Dom(inique) are three we get to know well.
So is it because you don’t believe in global warming that you didn’t believe in Katrina? And with that good night.
MsAnnaNOLA- the comments from people who we know, and also from those who probably delurked for the first time were absolutely wonderful tributes.
But, alas, there were hateful ugly comments from— well, I just don’t know what to call them. That is not to say I don’t have a large choice of words available, it’s just that I haven’t made up my mind yet about the words to use.
I have to say it’s difficult to believe most of the Dems are so mindnumbingly obtuse. They have to know they’re acting like wienies. Fear of Rove and coercion by big money contributors has much to do with it I guess.
Yes, MsAnnaNOLA– very ugly people came out last nite and tonight. Thanks to our dear moderators; they are gone. I do not understand their motivation and ugliness– pure evil tactics to attack only when someone is devastasted. Cowardly and unfeeling. frightened creeps.
Agree with Bill Selznik @74 – the game is rigged and dems are damned if they do and damned if they don’t – and it doesn’t matter what it is.
Take today for example: How long have we been hearing from the MSM whores, “Where is the dems’ plan for Iraq? Instead of just bashing Bush’s lead-up to and conduct of the war, why don’t dems come up with a plan?”
So, the dems came up with a plan (or two?) and John King on CNN today kept repeating, “Why did the dems feel like they had to come up with plans? Why wasn’t it enough to point out Bush’s failures with Iraq?”
It’s a planned set-up and that’s how they’ll always play it.
Also, notice how combative TV anchors are with dems and how softball they are with rethugs – Noron is the prime example – it’s premeditated and intentional – network policy, I’m sure.
These MSM policies are not gonna change until dems challenge the “journalists” during the interviews – and stop allowing the idiot MSM talking heads to walk all over them.
The other day Noron was interviewing Biden and she must have said “cut and run democrats” 10 times in about 3 minutes (boy, they know how do get their talking points out, don’t they?). Biden just started laughing at one point as he realized what she was doing – BUT HE NEVER SAID ANYTHING – HE NEVER CHALLENGED HER AT ALL!
Why do they just take it? Do they wanna lose?
Was it just a coincidence that while Cheney was being interviewed on CNN about the war on terror that it was interrupted by the raid in Miami?
AND Yahoo headline -28 year old office first to refuse deployment to Iraq because they are illegal orders for an illegal war-detained at Ft. Lewis Washington.
Remember when Nancy Pelosi lost it and basically called Kyra Phillips a Republican shill? That’s something we need more of.
It’s not enough to call the Repugs lying, thieving cowards; their lapdogs need to get spanked. On air. To their faces.
I’ve tried to watch Hairball with Noron a couple times this week, but I had to change the channel after ten seconds or so because I don’t want to have to get a new TV. I did manage to watch her interview with Howard Dean and that was pretty good because he just ignored her and said what he had to say. She had a big pouty face at the end of the interview, then proceded to suck off George Allen in the next segment. At that point, I had to switch to Smilin’ Jack making fun of Wolfie.
But I digress. What I’m getting at is confronting the enablers and throwing the narrative back in their faces.
Shock and fucking awe.
Amen and Hallelujah
After all, we have nothing to lose and so much salvage, save, replace, fix and repeal. Don’t “Remember the Alamo”, remember subpoena power. Wouldn’t we all much rather go down fighting than whimpering. Let’s not be the sit and watch party, let’s be the Get Real Party.
Thanks for all your good work.
Valley girl
Just when you think people can’t stoop any lower. Well I am glad you all trexxed them. I didn’t see any of the bad stuff. Whew. It saddens me that people are that vile and hateful. I wish I was totally surprised but I guess with all the lies and Coulters out there encouraging vile behavior…well it begets vile behavior.
109, everhopeful, and Selznik: look, maybe, intellectually, you’re right. But you know what? Sometimes you just gotta take a stand. You gotta fight. It may be that the odds are stacked and against you…but damn it, get in there and FIGHT.
Don’t cry about how unfair it is…it IS unfair. Just….fight. And if you get your nose bloodied? Pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and fight AGAIN.

Contra those comments saying truth is too complicated for a mass campaign, I disagree. The big truths are simple. For example:
1) BushCo mislead US into Iraq invasion.
2) BushCo won the Iraq invasion and then lost the occupation because they had no plan.
3) BushCo wants big permanent bases in Iraq and is lying about it.
4) Billions and billions of dollars were lost in Iraq reconstruction on BushCo watch.
5) BushCo response to Katrina was a disgrace months ago and it still is a disgrace today.
6) BushCo wants to steal your social secrurity money.
7) Bush is passing the buck on Iraq, and passing it through thousands of wrecked lives and billions of tax dollars and decades of US national security.
(many many more could be added here)
Simple, and true. You could defend them wise sayings if push came to shove, IMHO.
Also I applaud FDL for starting a comprehensive and affirmative approach to lefty blog agenda making with the great columns it has started. The labor/work safety blog is great. I wonder if FDL could start a voting rights column? Something more comprehensive than the BradBlog thingee which seems to specialize in machine fraud. It would be edifying, informative, handy-dandy for upcoming election, and utterly fascinating for us geek-nerds as well. Keep me in mom and dad’s basement a little longer, that’s for sure.

Good to hear from Ms. Hamsher. Hope again that you, your family, your friends and your late mom’s friends get through this trying time OK.
One of the main reasons repugs have cornered the market on pithy catchphrases is repetition — not any special monopoly on creative brevity. For example, when Gephardt labeled Bush a “miserable failure” it was catchy, accurate, and thus, potentially devestating. But outside of the blogs, did you ever hear another Dem talking head parrot it? Admittedly it was during a campaign and thus Kerry & Co. wanted to keep from driving up Gephardt’s stock, but still. It should have been flowing from the tongues of every Dem appearance for the next six months.
For that matter, it still should. Just like “Monica Lewinsky” is the Pavlovian answer for any winger that gets jammed with a tough question, so should “miserable failure” be in the quiver of every dem.
MsAnnaNOLA- Thanks. And I hope you will not mind me saying that we did not TRex them, in the strictest sense of TRex’s original concept and meaning. We did not alter the posts. We just deleted them. xxoo
Unless I’m in the middle of reading comments and a creep appears, I don’t see the vitriol. The sweepers here are fast! Most of us have the luxury of reading a whole thread of intelligent, funny conversation and honest disagreement. Thanks again for cleaning house!

I have doffed my tin foil hat– nothing is a coincidence anymore– the VP is a liar, the truth about soldiers killed by Iraqi troops 9 months ago was held back and finally told 2 days ago, mebbe Zarqawi was dead long ago ( if he ever existed as such) Santorum tells us a lie about WMD’s that everbody but Fox News disputes today and Rummy supports it anyhoo. Pat Tillman, Jessica Lynch are lied about. The Taliban is gone, we have won in Iraq and Afghanistan. TOTAL B.S. Iran is supplying arms and training to the Iraqi Shia. For Heaven’s Sake. I have no faith in our leadership. Watched Syriana again last nite. Watch it.
I have been playing this song all day since the vote and since I found out the terrible news:
>>>>>>>>>>>
Lyrics for: One Tin Soldier (The Legend of Billy Jack)
Listen, children, to a story
That was written long ago
‘Bout a kingdom on a mountain
And the valley folk below
On the mountain was a treasure
Buried deep beneath a stone
And the valley people swore
They’d have it for their very own
Go ahead and hate your neighbor
Go ahead and cheat a friend
Do it in the name of Heaven
You can justify it in the end
There won’t be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgment day
On the bloody morning after who…
One tin soldier rides away
So, the people of the valley
Sent a message up the hill
Asking for the buried treasure,
Tons of gold for which they’d kill
Came an answer from the kingdom,
“With our brothers, we will share
All the secrets of our mountain,
All the riches buried there”
Now, the valley cried with anger,
“Mount your horses, draw your sword!”
And they killed the mountain people
So, they won their just reward
Now, they stood beside the treasure
On the mountain dark and red
Turn the stone and looks beneath it…
“Peace on Earth” was all it said
Go ahead and hate your neighbor
Go ahead and cheat a friend
Do it in the name of Heaven
You can justify it in the end
There won’t be any trumpets blowing
Come the judgment day
On the bloody morning after who…
One tin soldier rides away
The problem with this argument is that — for this premise to work — Dems need to be in a position to run show — to question Coulter, etc. The Repubs run the provocative (cable, AM radio) media outlets. Until the Dems get some real power here, the secret is “Aikido” — using their own power against them (a la Rove).
Example — Iraq. “The Repubs say we must “stay the course.” They’re happy and proud with this position. The “Aikido” Dem response should be to say to voters. “They’re happy spending 8 billion of your dollars a month in Iraq. Are you happy? Bush says we’ll be there a minimum of 3 more years — with 2,000 more deaths. Happy with that? Did you know you were signing up for a 6 year war? They haven’t trained a single Iraqi military unit in 3 years of trying — why will they be any more successful the next 3?.’ IF YOU — VOTERS — ARE HAPPY WITH THE WAY THE REPUBLICANS ARE SPENDING YOUR TAX DOLLARS IN IRAQ — IF YOU’RE IN FAVOR OF MR. BUSH’S WAR — VOTE REPUBLICAN. IF YOU’RE READY FOR THIS INSANITY TO STOP — IF YOU’RE READY FOR AMERICA TO BE AMERICA AGAIN — VOTE DEMOCRATIC.
Rove wants to make it “simple.” So let’s make it simple. Use their own argument against them.
Thanks to all who keep this place clean, especially in our hour of sadness. This is a tough time for our community here, and their behind-the-curtain efforts are really appreciated.
Trex you are an outstanding human being. Thank you so much for this post it needs to be reposted again and again and again. Reframing the arguement is the ONLY way we can reach people. We need to get this message out over and over. If we don’t repeat the mesage it gets lost. REAPEAT, REPEAT, REPEAT.. PLEASE.
Down South, there’s a saying that no woman ever improved her reputation by standing on a street corner and yelling, “I’m not a whore.” The point is that when you’re on the defensive, you’re losing.
Karl Rove knows this better than anyone. He’ll go on the offensive with the most absurd, pointless bullshit. Anything to stay off the ropes. A good case in point is the attack on Joe Wilson. What difference does it make to his message whether or not it was his wife who arranged the trip? Even if true it is beside the point. But that doesn’t matter. It shifts the focus, and that is all that is needed, given the purile stupidity of the mainstream press.
Dana- thanks to you too my friend. I can tell you it was a real eye-opener for me when I first started moderating comments a good while back. Before that I really had no idea about the work that Jane and Christy had been doing behind the scenes to keep the place civil and spam-free. There is a huge volume of spam. Spam filters are in place, but the spammers are relentless. So, it’s always a challenge to try to figure out how to catch the “new escaped” spam without also trashing perfectly good comments. So, alot of this stuff goes into auto mod instead of being automatically deleted, because Jane doesn’t want good comments to vanish without a trace. I agree. But that does mean that a lot of comments have to be looked at one by one, just to make sure. AND, then there are the trolls. They are a challenge too, for different reasons.
Ghostman: I don’t understand your post – no one’s just crying about how unfair it is without being ready and willing to fight – and to do whatever it takes. I don’t like the way your post assumes that I’m not out there writing LTE’s, knocking on doors, phone banking, donating all my money to good dem candidates and issues, communicating the dem message to everyone I talk to, calling and writing my reps, and all the rest…
I think you misunderstand – knowing what we’re up against is part of the fight – and one thing we need to fight for is getting our “TV dems” to be brave. The fact is, they’re the ones out there as the “face” of our party, of our issues. And until they are willing to get their noses bloodied, we’re not going to be fully effective.
Jane, welcome home. We are all thinking of you. As for the undead who showed up last night — ah, they’re sad and pathetic, not worth wasting even an ounce of righteous fury on. Scroom.
egregious 84,
given the new revelations about ‘law-enforcement’ using web-tech providers to gather phone records & other info w/o a warrant, I think you may have a valid arguement!
Before “the occupation” someone hung a sign on an overpass in Virginia. It said “If I fear my neighbor can I kill him.” The law of preemption I guess-ready for the insanity to stop. I don’t like this ride.

Go TRex!!!
Excellent post!!
But if I had 10 minutes with Der Ann I’d first ask her why she’s such a douche bag, then I’d remove her voice box (and adams apple)!
I agree about attack. I also would like some Dem to keep saying “Iraq is a mess. Bush created this mess, denies that it is a mess, and my Republican opponent agrees with him. You cannot trust Republicans to clean up this mess.”
ANd wasn’t it ironic today when Bush said in Hungary that 50 years ago democracy prevailed when they defied their secret police.
Anon @127

T Rex – Wish you and not Shrum had been advising Kerry a while back. What a dead-nuts-on post.
I’ve been wailing about Democratic passiveness for years – going back to Mondale. You deal with bullies by standing up to them, shouting right back in their faces. It was Phil O’Donohue (if I’m not mistaken) who did this masterfully on O’Reilly. He was relentless, aggessive and loud… and O’Reilly backed off.
——————-
Jane, if you’re still following the comments: it was gratifying to learn that when your mother passed on, she was surrounded by family. A blessing for her and for you. Peace.
Ya know, TRex, you might think about spicing up the blogger media training with a phrase book or some such. This would make GREAT TV if done right, from what I’ve heard from libs who go on the shows. That’s all they want to air – not issues, but fisticuffs – so we should give it to ‘em, in spades. Spine by osmosis.
Here’s some simple language:
The House passed a three-quarters-of-a-TRILLION dollar tax cut today.
Three-quarters-of-a-TRILLION dollars.
The insanity continues.

In the wingnut mind, I’m sure you’ve noticed, when liberals show a willingness to raise their voices and fight, it puts them further out to the left, even as the views expressed remain exactly the same. Howard Dean was a perfect example — pretty centrist politician, but as his volume rose, the punditocracy reacted as though his political stance were moving leftward. It’s mildly amusing to watch that reptilian-level understanding of the world at work.
Great post, so true, and as I read it I flashed on that immortal scene:
Otter: Bluto’s right. Psychotic, but absolutely right. We gotta take these bastards. Now we could do it with conventional weapons that could take years and cost millions of lives. No, I think we have to go all out. I think that this situation absolutely requires a really futile and stupid gesture be done on somebody’s part.
Bluto: We’re just the guys to do it.
D-Day: Let’s do it.
Bluto: LET’S DO IT!
Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell no!
This post should be sent to every Democratic member of congress a la the CRASHING THE GATE action. It’s the oldest cliche in the book — the best defense is a good offense.
The good thing about adopting this strategy is that we don’t have to deal in truthiness or lies — the plain truth of the last five years is more than enough to condemn these scum and their tactics.
It’s not a question of stooping to their level or becoming them. It’s a question of not allowing them to frame the debate ever again.
Twisted version of Love and Logic parenting method. Works great on kids (both the twisted and nurturing styles).
The reason the media favors the right wingers, I think, is because they make good television. Ann Coulter draws viewers like flies to shite because she’s colorful, aggressive, and loud. Ditto Limbaugh, Hannity, and O’Reilly. Meanwhile, all the Dems on TV come off like bowls of tepid porridge. Who wants to get up off the sofa and shout, “YEAH!!!” when John Kerry is talking? We need powerful, assertive, magnetic people invading the media and taking up the cudgels, or else everyone in America is going to end up thinking that all liberals are, like, Ted Kennedy and Dennis Kucinich.
Valley, I rarely read commentary anywhere else. Next Hurrah, yes. dkos can be overwhelming and I tend to skim if I read comments at all. I’ve had only a glimpse, mainly from what some say here, of what goes on behind the curtain. So I can only imagine the time and energy moderators expend at FDL. Trolls are cowards first and foremost. Some of my colleagues (and they’re not trolls in the sense we know them here) are meek and quiet in public, but behind the bunker of their desktops, they attack without ever facing anyone, then log off. Weak.
No wonder there’s a strong community here. It grows because this garden is weeded by a group of communication horticulturists!
142, Mr. TSF: I can’t do the Wapo online thing, but….someone mentioned the intro to the Susskind book….apparently, the PRE-911 warnings to Bush were even STRONGER than has been mentioned, and all Bush could do with a CIA briefer was make a snide “frat-boy” remark….might make for an interesting question to Susskind.
Ghostman
As much as I hate to admit this, in my background as a market researcher I have to say that all of us throwing our venomous shit against the wall in hopes that something will stick, and then hoping that the Democrats will unite behind whatever sticks, is not going to overcome the Echo Chamber.
When the Repugs focus-group “Cut And Run ™”, they are targeting a highly specific group, ie, their base. they are counting on their base for two things: voting en masse, and influencing their close relations to vote likewise.
To attack, we need to take it to those ‘close relations’. Is there a Democrat who isn’t already appalled at the current administration? We have the majority opinion already! Everyone knows that BushCo lied! Find one or two resonant issues for the wishy-washy Right, and hammer them! Is gay marriage that serious an issue for the whole Republican party? Demean and marginalize it! Find an issue that’s stronger, like deficits, class warfare, whatever. They are weak – go for the jugular.
here’s my attack from earlier this evening:
http://www.callingallwingnuts……to-say-it/
I hit Oliver North pretty hard for being a big fat liar…
135, how about this tone:
Now, usually I would say that whoever makes a mess ought to have to clean it up. That’s the rule in our house . . . but in the case of Iraq, the Republicans just cannot be trusted to get it done. They’re like toddlers who ate too much sugar a couple of hours ago, and it’s obvious they need some rest. Send them home where they can’t do any more damage to our country or anyone else’s.
I constantly wonder why more isn’t made of the fact that these guys are outright swindlers and frauds. Why there aren’t constant simple illustrations of clearly hypocritical behavior, whether it’s Magic Christian DeLay and forced abortions on Saipan, or Bush “supporting” our troops while cutting their benefits at the very same time.
We live in a country where no one wants to consider themselves a sucker, where people bray constantly about common sense, horse sense, and street smarts — let’s let them know when theyr’re being taken.
No — they won’t like it, but maybe they’ll remember that sting the next time a Republican opens his mouth.
TREx, you know you’ve got it goin’ on when all but a handful of comments are on topic ;-)
Have you seen how they handle finances? I’m sorry; I can’t possibly vote for a party that molests my grandkids on a daily basis.
BTW, we shouldn’t expect to be thought of as ‘authoritative’ soon. That evil message machine has been spooling up for 30 years. 30 YEARS!!!
We have some catchin’up to do. If Bill Clinton had told the ReThugs to go fuck themselves in 1992 – remember – still the President-Elect, he allows their old favorite “Gays in the Military” to interrupt transition – it would have been a different story.
Kerry – out. Biden – out. Shrum, RGJoe, Pelosi, Salazar, Landrieu, Pryor out. They will not fight unless their very lives (powerful positions) are at risk. And most, not even then.
Mohandas Gandhi
Per Froomkin: “Rove believes that this strength vs. weakness rhetorical construct, combined with continued attacks on the media, will be enough to counterbalance whatever negative news about the actual war continues to emerge between now and the mid-term elections.”
So, let’s reframe it as: “competence vs incompetence.” In 2003, George W. Bush, ignoring his father’s advice, invaded Iraq ostensibly to eliminate weapons of mass destruction. But President Clinton had already achieved that objective, with neither fanfare nor U.S. casualties:
The key message is that Bush took the country to war for an objective that Clinton had already achieved.
Rove will reply but he didn’t achieve democracy. The point is that Bush hasn’t achieved democracy. Rather he has achieved the civil war that his father forsaw and avoided at the end of Desert Storm:
The point is that, as a Commander-in-Chief, George W. Bush would make a great rodeo clown. He has violated every precept of military wisdom that has been assembled in the past 3000 years, e.g.:
The message is that the Republican Party has led the nation down the garden path to crushing fiscal debt to our major global adversary, and have left our military forces in shambles.
Some of the simple important and eminently repeatable truths come right out of Bush’s own mouth. I can hardly wait for the campaign commercials:
On torturing insane al Qaeda prisoner:
“I said he was important. You’re not going to let me lose face on this, are you?”
“Do some of these harsh methods really work?”
To “bin Laden to strike US” briefer:
“OK, you’ve covered your ass now.”
Now, quoting the President presidenting cannot be, like, an ATTACK, could it? No way.
Geez- I guess my mod abilities are not what I thought. I JUST caught Jane’s comment from earlier. Sad thing is, when one (well, that would be me) moderates comments, the “search image” is for all of the nasty stuff. The flip side of being a regular reader. Not a complaint by any means, just saying what I have experienced.
wesgpc
“But what about the children?”
The republicans have the house, the senate, and the White House, and yet the president is at 35% JAR. They’re not doing all that well in persuading the American people of their success. In fact, the media who support this admin, for all the pro-right editorials and slanted coverage, aren’t doing so hot either in propping up the right. Nearly 2/3 of the country are unhappy. So whatever Rove is selling to the base, they’re not buying in any way that is boosting morale.
There are winds of change a-blowin. I think we will have some serious blowback in VA come November. If Allen doesn’t lose, he may win only by a small margin, and that will end his presidential ambitions.

Valley Girl,
Jane’s news today had brought back some memories for me. I wanted to post but the comments were always closed on the sorrow thread. Then I had read all the posts about it being open a couple of hours ago. So I wrote some thoughts and by the time I hit post it closed again. I noticed
your post about it opening again soon so I keep checking and refreshing. Well I had managed to save my post but I need to go to bed. Do you have any idea when it will open again?
Thanks for all you do!
THE LONGER WE STAY,
THE MORE WE PAY
This could be true for the Iraq quagmire,
The incompetent decider and chief in Office,
Or any of the Administration for that matter.
I’d suggest starting every reply to a Republican charge with “that’s bullshit,” unless you’re on TV, when it would still be OK if you could be sure the editor would just bleep you rather than cutting you. Otherwise, surely we can find a suitable synonym: “poppycock,” or “balderdash,” or “nonsense”, or even perhaps “wrong” or “a lie.” Follow up with “You know it, and I know it, and here’s why.” Then lower the boom with the truth. Unlike the Repugs, we don’t have to make shit up; as TRex notes, it’s a target rich environment.
Jane, I got here after the comments had closed on the condolence thread, but please know that you are in my thoughts.
One further thought for VG and the other moderators: I think it’s pretty clear that, while most of the online attacks are from RedState sorts, some of them might be from Leiberman supporters taking their cue from Zengerle. An enterprising Connecticut blogger might be able to trace them, so I hope you saved their comments and their addresses. Just sayin’.
The Repugnican Party
Repugnant Republican Party.
The Masters of Hypomockracy
Their hypocrisy is a mockery of Democracy.
I really enjoyed your post.
What you wrote is so true, and is something I need to do more often.
I listen to a local radio show on the weekends and the host has the same rant as you. Don’t respond, attack. And he always says, never talk about democrats, always talk about Republicans.
OFG
I had somehow managed to keep it together… Until I saw this-
nice.
The media will pay attention to talk like this below. TPM notes that Democrats candidate are becoming a “must have” accessory as their chances improve: http://www.talkingpointsmemo.c…..08779.php. If corporate media thinks it needs Dem votes for more give aways and mergers they will grit their teeth and play the soundbites. They think that they will be able to sneak in and buy the winners out later. But if people like Tester, Lamont, Madrit and McNerney that is much less likely to happen than now.
Now, what this worst Rubber Stamp Congress has done in this session has been the test. The American people will not decide by listening to mere words, or by reading a mere platform. They will decide on the record, the record as it has been written. And in the record is the stark truth, that the battle lines of 2006 are the same as they were at the end of 2001, when the Nation lay prostrate and helpless as a result of Republican misrule and inaction on international terrorism.
In the 1990s we were attacking the citadel of special privilege and greed. We were fighting to drive the money changers from the temple. Today, in 2006, we are now the defenders of the stronghold of democracy and of equal opportunity, the haven of the ordinary people of this land and not of the favored classes or the powerful few. The battle cry is just the same now as it was in 1932, 1948 and 1992 and I paraphrase the words of Franklin D. Roosevelt as he issued the challenge, in accepting nomination in Chicago: “This is more than a political call to arms. Give me your help, not to win votes alone, but to win in this new crusade to keep America secure and safe for its own people.”
Now my friends, with the help of God and the wholehearted push which you can put behind this campaign, we can save this country from a continuation of the Rubber Stamp Congress, and from misrule from now on.
I must have your help. You must get in and push, and win this election. The country can’t afford another Rubber Stamp Republican Congress

I missed some adapting to the Turnip Day speech:
Today, in 2006, we DEMOCRATS are now the defenders of the stronghold of democracy and of equal opportunity, the haven of the ordinary people of this land and not of the favored classes or the powerful few.
wesgpc, I like “the haven of the ordinary people of this land and not of the favored classes or the powerful few.”
There is a great deal to be learned from the reckless cruelty of Joe McCarthy, and Joseph Welch’s response to it during the Army-McCarthy hearings. Recall that McCarthy was as smart as our Dubya, and he too had a Brain, Roy Cohn. There was a subtle moment in the Army-McCarthy hearings in the midst of Welch’s counterattack on McCarthy for his attack on Fred Fisher:
My understanding – from research I did 20 years ago now – is that Cohn and Welch had an understanding, a trade-off, that neither Fisher’s history nor Cohn’s draft record would be mentioned. McCarthy was aware of this deal, and broke it – recklessly. But it was a response to an attack, an anticipated attack, which led directly to the overwhelming success of the censure motion in the House. But the success of the offensive depends on anticipating the possible attack.
I think there was a profound dramatic moment when the exchange above occurred: for the first time, the narcissistic Cohn was faced with not being the focus of attention, and he saw an attack he feared wither because he was not as important as he thought.
I want Fitz to be a Welch. I want him to save us all from the McCarthys and Cohns of our time. TRex’s exhortation to attack is a call to a strategy, but it is not the only way. Where is Specter’s dignity? Or Santorum’s? Or Lieberman’s, Feinstein’s, or anyone in Congress who lets this Adminstration break the law?
First, condolences to Jane. I don’t know you, but know the pain of such a loss. I admire your determination to carry on. You’ve got the right spirit for the battles ahead.
To the post: I couldn’t agree more with the philosophy of going on the offensive and staying there. I’m disheartened that the Democratic congressional leadership does not understand this basic principle.
I’d suggest, for example, a response to the “cut and run” blather the airing of a commercial featuring a bright red parrot, saying “awrrrrk, cut and run! cut and run!” then morph it into the faces of the hideous Republicans on the floor of the House. Use that parrot imagery as the true voice of the Republicans. Then go on the attack. Call them parrot Republicans. Say that they are mindless robots who are incapable of governing or being part of a reality-based community. So they resort to name calling and parrot behavior.
Attack relentlessly. Expose them for what they are. Lying, brain-dead parrots.
wesgpc, I said that, not Anon. Don’t know how that happened.
OFG- not to worry. All is forgiven. I was truly shocked at my notoriety, but what I did not add was that this was only a very very small part of what was making me go off the cliff. I feel so much better about the issue you are specifically referring to now that that jerk has been silenced. I was thinking of you earlier today. If I had had my wits about me re: that person, I would have done it differently. I would have posted a comment to you, saying: OFG, that guy may have all of the cans in his six-pack, but he doesn’t have the plastic thingie to hold them together.
BarbaraB at 10:52 p.m.
I always have kind of liked “hogwash.” It’s about as umpleasant a substance as “bullshit” and has the added advantage of subliminally invoking the image of “Miss Piggy” Rove, the king of all bullshit.
Okay. Had to jump down to the end after refreshing. (Should have posted my thoughts re: the Media first..then refreshed!)
Listen up! Don’t despair about the media. We are impacting them as well as Washington! While their reader/viewership falls, the blogs are on the rise. Why? Because of people like Jane and Christy and all the rest who know that TRex is right. They Attack with the Truth and never back down. I came to the Internet for news because the media was screwing me over and I knew it. It’s not hard to see. Most citizens “Get” that part of it. Then I found the blogs and never looked further. I found what I need here.
Recently, some in the media have acknowledged using the blogs as sources. Also consider that the stories that get a LOT of coverage in the blogs that the media would prefer to ignore are making it to that venue. Look at Lamont/Lieberman. National coverage all over the place. Gotta wonder about that. There are other races. But this campaign is all Netroots all the time. So much so that it’s making the CM.
Hang in there. Change is happening.
Late to the thread, but couldn’t agree more Christy. It’s time to take off the gloves and treat these people for what they are — contemptible.
Every time I hear a Democrat on TV debating one of these clowns like Santorum but starting off with “All due respect” to “My good friend” or something like that, I wince.
Liars and murderers aren’t treated with respect, they’re treated with derision and held account for their crimes.
A not-so-random observation:
Sometimes it’s not what you expect to get, but what you need to do.
Tinksrival- thanks. as it turns out, many of the moderators are on east coast time. I didn’t have any exact time in mind for re-opening comments. And, I hope they will be re-opened. Apart from Jane and RH, we are not “professionals”. I will leave that to anyone who is a morning person. Oh, sorry TRex. TRex has the goods. But he is not a morning person either, or so I would guess.
Thank you Valley Girl. My hand is ungentle and sometimes causes unintended harm. I am a boy. Mostly, with a small “b”.
I’m working on my FDL post for Saturday, wanting to do the ladies of the house proud. I can create it on my site and save it as a draft then send it over here can’t I? I may need some tekkie help here. I’m a great gearjammer but this thing doesn’t have a stickshift.
OFG, I got your back on the tech stuff. WordPress and I are starting to really get along.
OK…Thanks V.G.
Goodnight
Valley Girl–Are you saying your alone in moderating the late night threads? They can go on until the next day! Thanks so much for working so hard on this. Wish I could help.
OFG. I don’t know what happened to cause what I sense is probably a misunderstanding but you have to know you’re a member of the FDL family–we all get dented fenders on the Superhighway now and then. ;)
“Vote Democratic: We saved your ass before and we’re ready to do it again.”
We are talking about taking the fight to our enemy. To fight the enemy successfully, it is necessary to understand the enemy. I have been thinking today about Karl Rove.
I believe that in recent days we have seen an attack against the blogosphere launched by Rove on three levels.
On the lowest, street-fighting level, we have seen a Tolkeinian horde of right wing trolls, orcs and goblins swarming FDL, at a time when an attack of any kind is in the poorest of taste, is in fact vile and despicable. I wonder whether any of the other progressive blogs have experienced something similar in this time frame.
On the level of everyday politics, we have heard Rove deliver a political speech, covered by the media, against bloggers, swiftboating us with words like “anger” and “hate.”
And on the level of corporate/political machinations, we have the ongoing attack on net neutrality, an attack that could badly damage our ability to operate effectively on the Internet.
All three of these events are fact. You only need to put on your tinfoil hat with me for a minute to connect the dots. It seems quite possible that these three onslaughts are all one and the same, three prongs of a Rovian ratfuck. Does anybody like that theory?
For TeddySF or anyone else planning to catch the WaPo online chat, Ghostman at 10:18 pm reminds me: I think I heard somewhere that the unredacted content of the Aug. 6, 2001 pdb is more like 10 or so pages than the 2 we’ve seen, all on the threat of an Al Qaeda attack in this country. Perhaps someone could ask Mr Suskind whether he has heard this? (Maybe I was just listening to QXPD news when I thought I picked this up!)
BarbaraB – exactly! I was grinding my teeth because on the way home tonight, I happened to tune into the NewsHour segment on Net Neutrality. They had a typical telco lobbyist weasel up against a guy from Amazon, who was just a little too technical and not PR-oriented enough. Literally every third sentence out of the lobbyist’s mouth was a flat-out lie. The Amazon guy didn’t do badly, but he had a tendency to explain why the statements were false without actually saying they were.
If I’d been in his place (other than the fact that I’d probably have messed up the segment by slugging the lobbyist), I would have led every response with “well, actually, that’s a blatant lie.” I think it would have been a lot more effective.
neurophius — sounds plausible to me.
Audrey- I have stayed up late to moderate comments alot. Not always, but a lot. However, when TRex puts up a post, HE always sticks around to moderate comments. Thank god. TRex is a gentleman and a scholar. It’s really only within the past few days that things have gotten really out of control. People “regular posters” have been rude and demanding getting into really nasty exchanges. Alas, OFG unwittingly added something to the mix because he was outraged by an attack on Jane (and some others), and wanted to go to battle. Great spirit of loyalty, but the timing just happened to be off. And, yes, all of the threads are usually open all of the time, whether there are moderators or not. It is only in a few instances that comments have had to be turned off, and that has happened only very recently. To look at the bright side, Jane and FDL are getting a lot of attention not only for the good things we know about, but also because, maybe (my guess) word is out that FDL is rocking the boat of the idiot empire.
Re Coulter, that’s not “sort of like some kind of Aryan dominatrix”, that’s “like an Aryan dominatrix”. Never employ sorta kinda qualifiers when attacking.
Of course what you’d really want to say would be “like a fucking Aryan dominatrix”, but you’re on television and you can’t blow your shot.
Sorry I didn’t make this clearer, but WaPoO chats are open now for your questions. I always submit mine the night before, after they open for business about 10:15 pacific time, and lately have had good luck getting my questions picked the next morning. It’s a great way to frame the debate on the Post Chats, and to get our issues in front of reporters and, presumably, the East Coast Media Elite who may read these.
Anyway, here’s the links again. Ask away!!

How about Dems asking: Why is a homo male prostitute given acces to roam the halls of the White House unsupervised at night?
That could result in some fun conversation.
Bless you, Valley Girl, and OFG and TRex too. :)
I noticed a lot of tension in the threads for a while now and yeah, I know I would have a hard time NOT defending our hosts when the idiots attack…fortunately, I’m usually so far behind I don’t get that chance. The success of this venture and rapid growth in popularity is a good point to make.
Thought I would channel me some Turnip Day Harry before I went to sleep. I’d love to see what the corporate media makes of speech like this:
The Republicans tried to steal your social security savings in the trust fund, but the people saw through it and said no, and with your help, the Democrats stopped them. Remember, Mr. BushCheney fixed up a stacked commission and he made them pledge to support the BushCheney privatization scam to get appointed, but his plan was so crazy they couldn’t agree on anything. So what does the Rubber Stamp Republican Congress propose for next session? That’s right, they want to try to steal it all over again. But we can’t let them.
Now the Republicans claim that they are so strong on national security. Well, maybe, but BushCheney is not, and the Rubber Stamp Republican Congress does whatever he says, whether it makes a lick of sense to ten year old or not, so it doesn’t mean a thing. A CIA man traveled out to Mr. Bush’s fake dude ranch in Texas in the summer of 2001. He personally give him a briefing on the threat of a major terrorist strike in the US. What did Mr. Bush say? I’ll tell you what he said: “OK, you’ve covered your ass now.” Excuse my language, but that is what he said. This is the leader that the Rubber Stamp Republican Congress follows slavishly. Usually they say actions speak louder than words, but here the words spoke as loud as the inaction. And look at what it cost us.
The Rubber Stamp Republican Congress has been doing, or not doing, anything and everything that Mr. BushCheney says to do or not do for six long years. They continue to not do their job after it is very clear the Iraq invasion was based on incompetence, exaggeration and maybe even downright lies. They continue this dereliction after Mr. BushCheney frittered away a great military victory by not having any plan at all for what to do next. They continue this after Mr. BushCheney lost, and his cronies stole, billions and billions of dollars for the reconstruction that never happened. They continue this after Mr. BushCheney changed their story about why we went to war half a dozen times. Now they say “Stay the Course” What course? Well, I’ll tell you what course: “Pass the Buck, More of the Same, and Let the Next Fellow Clean It Up” that is exactly what their course is and don’t let anybody fool you. That is their course for the next three long years. We can’t let that happen. We have to stop them from wrecking the military, hurting the country’s security, and increasing the price of oil out of their incompetence.
Has anybody come up with this one yet?
“Cut and run? Yeah, sure, Democrats want to cut and run. We want to cut off the nuts of the thugs that have hijacked our country, and run them the hell out of town.”
neurophius #197: I think we need a euphemism somewhere in there.
neurophius at 11:35 pm :
Yes, almost as much as I like Libertango.
prostratedragon:
I’m sorry, what is Libertango?
Thanks, Teddy, then I’ll do it myself.
TRex – Thank you again kind sir. Another laugh out loud roaring nite cap.
Although I don’t recall exact words, my favorite moment during the Kerry ‘04 campaign was when he was caught off mic. mumbling about those most corrupt liars etc. He almost won my vote that day. Now, this very day, is the time to use the words Lie and Liar!! Bring the liars off their oily blood soaked pillar of cash.
Mr. Pres. why did you send eight billion in cold cash to Iraq and hand it out so freely to the terrists?
And, speaking of TRex, perhaps he has slipped into a forgiveable stupor because his 2 kitties are so happy to see him back home from his “real” job. TRex, so far everyone except that one at the beginning has been well-behaved. I really have to crash. TRex usually lets everyone know when he is signing off. Maybe the kitties had their way with him. So, good nite, all.

TRex & VG-
Thanks for all the words (Great Post) and admin. Except for some very weird stuff late last night, I wouldn’t have known we were being besieged.
Eureka Springs @ 202
Mine. too. Then he bowed down and parsed, and begged for forgivness, as I recall, and lost it again.
Ok smartie. How would you counter ‘cut and run’?
Unless you got something quit complaining about the Dem’s response.
Btw-What’s the publics response?
My guess is they know the Republicans are full of it.
The cut and run slogan is overdone and only important to pundits.
OK, this the last, before I sleep. That madness will be gone in the morning. My last Turnip Day Updated effort. I promise.
Now the Rubber Stamp Republicans in Congress say they are for fiscal responsibility. But if that is so, why do they follow Mr. BushCheney’s policies that enrich the rich and break all the rest? Remember when the President said that the United States Bonds in the trust fund were just pieces of paper? I wonder what his rich banker friends thought when he said that. Mr. BushCheney’s and the Rubber Stamp Republican Congress’s word is not as good as the paper it’s written on, so that is a good thing for the Bonds, I suppose, otherwise the country’s finances would be even more wrecked than they are now.
If you think I’m being mean about how Mr. BushCheney’s words don’t mean a thing, just ask yourself why Mr. Rove still has a job in the White House? Mr. BushCheney said that Mr. Rove anyone would be out of the White House if they had anything to do with the revealing the identity of that secret CIA agent. But Mr. Rove did have something to do with it and last I heard Mr. Rove was still working inside there. The Rubber Stamp Republican Congress does nothing, doesn’t look into it, of course, because they see that as their number one job as not doing one thing at all that goes against Mr. BushCheney. Now Mr. BushCheney says that Mr. Rove can stay because he is not guilty of a crime. But that is not at all what he first said. That shows how Mr. BushCheney and the Rubber Stamp Republican Congress do not live up to their promises.
The price of oil is up, and staying up, mostly because of the miserable mess Mr. BushCheney made in Iraq, with the help or the Rubber Stamp Republican Congress. And Mr. BushCheney said that the country was addicted to oil. OK, that is his word. But what good is it? What does the Rubber Stamp Republican Congress do? Shovel more money to oil companies, to the suppliers, and that is fine by Mr. BushCheney. I wonder if he wants to get us off the oil addiction. I doubt it because high oil prices hurt the average person but help out his rich oil buddies. So you see, their words mean nothing. We have to put the Rubber Stamp Republican Congress out of business so promises and words mean something again, and we can do that with your help.
The Rubber Stamp Repbulican Congress is the worst Congress in the history of this country and we have to show them the door.
very nice wesgpc
g’nite all, sleep on the left side
Strictly hush-hush: Page with link to Libertango.
This version’s similar to what I was listening to. Either it will leave no impression on you, or teach you your capacity for obsession. In the long run quite possibly both.
If a Democratic majority is elected to the House in ‘06, their influence will be limited to to the further political discredit of BushCo. While this is a desperately neccessary step, it won’t help the nation, and won’t help the Democrats retain control in ‘08.
Primarily because: it’s all about balancing the budget. There’s no more room to maneuver – the outlook is bright red (deficit) in all directions.
A Democratic majority in the House will be immobilized by the unavoidable need to increase revenue by raising taxes.
When someone gives you the old liberals want to cut and run line, just say… you must not be aware that the Iraqis want us out. After all it is THEIR country and not ours. As much as the repugs would like to get their grubby little mitts on their oil.
There is an absence of mercy in my heart for those who would gloat at and revel in the pain of another. Such moral bankruptcy renders them less than human, and thus unfit for tender considerations.
The bell is tolling, enablers of kleptocracy…Can you hear its somber peal yet?
And this time there will be no cultural rehabilitation, no political rebirth, no melting like pusillanimous tallow into the crevices of the American fabric, only to rise again as the same odious beast bent on wholesale destruction in pursuit of Mammon… No redemption.
There is only the Abyss that you all so richly deserve.
‘Woe unto you’
Regret being so late to this extraordinary post and comments but am overjoyed with the tone and fighting spirit. It it a thrilling call to verbal arms and not a moment too soon. Hope and trust it sweeps the netroots and you can bet I’ll do my best to spread the word and participate every free minute.
As some of you patient or not so patient Firedogs may have noticed I am quite obessed with recent developments surrounding the owner point men – Dirty Harry Clint Eastwood and Peter Uberroth – talking heads for their fellow owner tyrants of Pebble Beach Company. Second only to toadies within the California State Democratic leadership for being PBC whores….and it has slowly but surely finally dawned on me that the corporate class of power mongers that define the Eastwood/Uberroth PBC cartel know that the jig may soon really bite them on their sorry asses.
We have hard evidence of their usurption amd corruptions of local and state democratic officials – a truly dumb & quite likely illegal bribing of elected officials. I’m excited because it represents the first major miscalculation from the purported rich whiz kids including Eastwood & uberroth their local attorney and hapless local stooges on the Monterey County Board of Supervisors. We are evaluating a proposal to seek intervention from the CA Attorney General and Federal special prosecutors.
Am considerably inspired by this post – my dear late Dad always said the way to deal with unmitigated bullies is to unabashed bully them right back. Thanks for the inspiration of this post. We’re mad as hell and perversely energized by the great call to righteous snark on a scale they couldn’t imagine even if they tried.
Thank you all for your spendid example.FDLakers invigorate and inspire this enraged ole Newspaper brat. You dears never fail to inspire by your own fearless energies. Stay tuned and let the games begin.

Yes, yes, yes. As much fun as it would be to beat the crap out of this bunch until 2024, we won’t be doing the US any favors if that’s all we do.
I think we should risk losing, but we should do it on our feet. Better that than winning on our knees (hear this Rahm, Chuck, Hillary) – to win like that will not serve the nation, and will ensure losses in ‘08 (lacking courage will only be disguised while the ReThugs are waning).
Regarding the media,
After seeing the network of propaganda set up by right-wing interests against Hugo Chavez’s own GOVERNMENT, and seeing how other corporate medias in other countries push false messages from the people who pay them, wouldn’t it be fair to seriously question if our own national media is as compromised and malicious to our welfare as Chavez’s was?
Gee, looks like those democratic senators are right. The Iraqi government is offering amnesty …

Morning all,
TRex, you’re absolutely right about framing the argument and playing offense for a change. Rhetorically, however, we can do better than the Malkins and Coulters of the world.
I keep having this fantasy of “four minutes” with Pat Buchanon, and telling him that the sorry state of the national political debate can be laid squarely at his feet.
“Make no mistake, we are at war…a culture war.”
That scared the shit outta me fifteen odd years ago. Alas, I was only dimly aware of how bad it was going to get.
Hope all are well. Yesterday was rough. Hugs to Jane.
Eric Boehlert: The Press Plays Dumb About the Bush Bounce
The mainstream media’s incessant, excited chatter about a looming Bush Bounce represented just the latest embarrassment in an endless parade of journalism missteps during the Bush years. The depressing puppet show–senior White House aides announce things are great, conservative ‘news’ outlets echo the spin and then MSM journalists gamely play along–has become annoying, tiresome and transparent. Yet the MSM won’t stop embarrassing themselves.
Two problems with the contagious Bush Bounce story: a) the Bounce was all but non-existent, with three of the last four national polls (USA Today, WSJ-NBC, CNN) showing no statistical movement whatsoever for Bush following last week’s wildly hyped “wave of good news” (AP).

Jane, your sorrow is my sorrow. I am listening now to the demise of my vibrant mother. God bless us all.
Good Morning!
My suggestion in the spirit of Trex’s excellent poat (and the excellent comments:
Republican says, “Cut and Run.”
We say, “Cut the Crap! This is serious!”
Interesting
You have made my day!!! I have been doing just what you write, and it DOES WORK!!! Don’t back down, and always on the offensive. thanks for putting it out for all of us.
Good morning to all.
Le Jackal, I’m so sorry to read that. This is the worst day you will ever face, but as Jane said earlier, the seconds do keep ticking by, and they will finally lead your mother, and then you yourself, to peace.
I’ll be thinking of you both today.
Hi Lotus,
More really really bad news from Iraq: State of Emergency declared in Bagdhad.
http://www.nytimes.com/aponlin…..r=homepage
What’s the temp. there *ilson?
Cut and run??
Republicans CUT out the facts and RUN over the truth!
Republicans LIE and SPY.
They only way Republicans can win is the POLITICS OF POLARIZATION.
And my question for this election: When did you last feel like you were part of the GREAT Family of AMERICA?
Good Morning, Iraq ! It’s a sunny 109ºF in downtown Baghdad at 3:45 in the afternoon …
TRex! I feel like I got a good whack on the back and my marching orders! That’s just how they do it. I’ve probably found I’m left of center because of my essential urge to be nurturing and fair and inclusive. Must learn method above. Must. Learn. To. ATTACK. Bad. Things… time to re-read post.
Best post I’ve read in quite a while. Maybe ever.
IT’S TIME TO FUCKING ATTACK, GODDAMNIT!!
TAKE NO FUCKING PRISONERS!!
Ah, imm — hi there, podnah!
Oh man, B’dad — if the “insurgents” are now the ones putting up the roadblocks there, Maliki’s crackdown has obviously died a-borning.
I’m remembering what somebody here prophesied a few weeks ago: at some point, the U.S. posts in Iraq — Green Zone and all — will end up like so many Alamos, isolated and surrounded in an endless mass of enemies.
How long do they have? Once this momentum starts, it builds fast. Ye gods.
lotus 233. Exactly. As one who lived in San Antonio for many years, I can report that the Alamo ended badly for the Texans.
I have to either stay up later, get up earlier, or hope that people read this far down the post.
I agree with the idea of fight, fight, fight. I think there are two ideas which need some consideration. The first involves an understanding of language and how we instinctively use it. Each of us has many languages, and we switch back and forth between them seamlessly, without violating the core idea being expressed by them. Most of the time we do this unconsciously: I speak differently to my Aunt Gladys than I do to my classes at my university, and I shift gears once again when I speak to buddies online. I shift gears again when I speak to people I don’t know. I know how to use the word *fuck*. See, I used it! I also know when using it sets my objective ten yards forward and when it sets my objective ten yards backward, and I’m smart enough to choose use/non-use on that basis. this brings me to my second point, knowing and respecting the persons(s) with whom I’m interacting, and never forgetting that my objective is to leave the conversation with them thinking more like I do than when I entered it. This is tough. I’m reminded of a poster slogan “When you’re up to your ass in alligators it is hard to remember that your objective is to drain the swamp“.
My university has been Coulterized twice. The first was a standard performance, and she was her usual crude self. The second time she came, the Young Republicans who invited her were given the opportunity to do so only in debate format. They accepted, she accepted, and one of the most liberal members of our faculty debated her. That member pretty much ignored Coulter’s assault on liberals, and presented herself as she was…a soccer mom, two kids, mortgage, faithful attendee at PTA and town council meetings, and then presented her vision of an America more just, more balanced, and more tolerant than the America she was living in at the time. She spoke second, and Coulter was left with no place to go. My colleague won the contest hands down–no, make that hands up. The applause was fierce. At the end of the debate, my colleague said she’s be willing to do this again, if the Young Republicans set it up. Coulter has not been back.
My ride buzzed, and I have to get ready. Maybe I’ll return to this theme later. Bye.
What a howling waste.
Here’s the Guardian’s report on Baghdad developments, including:

GREAT POST T-REX!!!
But you are preaching to the choir. Is there any way we can make the Dem candidates adopt this strategy??
(It seems that instead the Dems adopted the playbook of environmental protestors — that is, lie down, don’t say a word, and let people walk all over you!)
(Haven’t had a chance to read all the comments on the thread, so this might have already been addressed.)
Attack! It has been frustrating watching the dems cower in the corner since rover stole the election for chimpy for the first time AND was able to successfully quell any outrage or investigation into election fraud.
It has been a breath of fresh air to watch Murtha on the attack over the last few months but it’s a shame most dems don’t learn from his example. They are more concerned with getting elected than doing what is right (and by right I mean left).
To make matters worse, the GOP pundits have gone largely unchecked by the media while the GOP blasts the them for being too liberal. That just causes the media to swing farther to the right in hopes of avoiding that label. It’s a little game the GOP has played for years — much like using the word ‘liberal’ as a bad word.
As my rant quickly runs out of steam due to the lack of coffee, I had one unrelated point to make. How long will it take for the rove machine to say that the domestic terror arrests were directly related to the NSA illegal wire tapping?
Since the government has decided to wage a ‘War On Terror’, perhaps the netroots should support a war as well. Why not start a ‘War On Fear’. The only handle the neo’s have presently is for America to be very very afraid, and they’ll protect us. We should attack that fear and shame Americans into getting some guts and take back our pride. I’m tired of a bunch of pussies running our country.
LET’S DECLARE A WAR ON FEAR.
Excellent post, TRex!
Just read what I think is a good companion piece. Philip Slater’s question at HuffPo:
Why do Democrats Let Bush Define the Terror Issue?
ATTACK! ATTACK, ATTACK, ATTAAAAACK!!!!
Trex–you rock. Thanks for the fighting words. VG and other moderators, thanks so much. I can’t imagine how awful that job must get sometimes. Wesgpc..ditto on thanks. For that matter, thanks to all FDL pups and den mothers. This site helps in the slog through life.
Maximum respect.
Thanks for the great post TRex. I couldn’t agree with you more. I think this is what we are all waiting for. That our “leaders” will stand up for themselves but it just doesn’t happen very often. Should we send all the Dems in congress a copy of your post? Would that help? Why should we have to? They should be able to figure this stuff out on their own. Perhaps they like things just the way they are and that’s why we are all here fighting the fight of our lives while those in DC sit back and enjoy the good life. Needless to say I get pretty discouraged with the whole set up.
By the way, I’m a lurker who went to Yearly Kos. What a fabulous time I had and I just wanted to start posting and thank everyone on FDL for all they do. I think it’s the most intelligent blog on the Internet. Lots of hugs and prayers for Jane and her family.
It has been a breath of fresh air to watch Murtha on the attack over the last few months but it’s a shame most dems don’t learn from his example. They are more concerned with getting elected than doing what is right (and by right I mean left)[,] sez twolf1.
That’s the MOST confounding piece of this whole thing! Don’t they see that getting elected now runs right through the territory we’re all sitting on? We’re in no way “fringe” here — this spot, right here, is exactly where they’ll find the huge mass of voters!
WHY have so many DC Dems blindfolded themselves to these facts-on-the-ground? Why are we having to do all this thinking for them? I just don’t get it.
Too late to the party as usual. Still…
“Lie and die” is typical Dem Strategy Konsultant Krap. As usual it’s labored, works to hard to be clever or something. It says “See what a smarty pants I am?”
SImple is best.
“Cut and run Democrats”? Fine. The counter is easy: “Head in the sand Republicans.” Guess which one will resonate better with a public that 60% thinks the war is a massive FUBAR?
Right on. Attack. They’re going to smear you anyway, so attack.
I see today that we’re influencing the narrative. The Howie Kurtz piece that Christy linked gets the Lieberman story right, correcting John Dickerson’s Beltway BS on the race. Begala over at TPM refers to the rubber-stamp republicans.
It’s working. People on the inside are beginning to recognize that cutting edge reporting and analysis on political issues is happening here in the blogosphere.
And FDL has been a big part of getting this recognition to take place.
[Aside to DrBB: Hi. How are your folks coming? Been thinking of you and them.]
You know, most DC Dems remind me of that old joke you’ve probably seen on somebody’s office wall:
Where were they? How many of them? Which way were they heading?
I must find them! I AM THEIR LEADER!
The ‘head-in-the-sand’ policy has been brought to you by the same re-pube-lickins that brought you the ‘no war plan survives the first 5 minutes of battle’ (emphasis on ‘no war plan’).
OT – it now comes to light that chimpco has been looking at everyone’s bank records. in a couple months, we’ll find out they have been opening our mail and monitoring our grocery store shoppers cards.
new thread — new politics !
HOORAY TREX!!!
YOU GET IT!
More than anything else the progressive blogosphere wants to change tactics. We want to smack the Repug bullies square in the face and make them run to their mamas. The Congresscritters don’t get this nor do the beltway consultants. We need to give ‘em good soundbites that attack and don’t give any quarter. No more responses to their attacks.
Remember what LBJ said about an unfair characterization: “I know it ain’t true but I want to see him deny it.”
Karl Rove has made his living off of this strategy. I don’t want us to be exactly like that but we certainy cannot cede any ground and we do need to be more ruthless in our rhetoric. We didn’t start this damn fight but we sure as hell are going to finish it. I don’t like being a jerk and an asshole but if that what it takes to win I’m going to do it. There is way too much at stake to let it go because we can’t stand having to be jerks.
These tactics are good for the elite stormtroopers of the left, but not fit for everybody. Too many on our side of the aisle have a natural aversion to this sort of behaviour; steroidally aggressive and verbally violent.
But we do need a few out in front, willing to get all illogical and offensive on their candy-assed butts.
We need a secret training facility. A liberal Geonosis. We just need to find our own Jango to clone.
Brilliant post.
TRex,
Thanks so very much for this post. So many dems (many here included) are always “pussy footin” around, afraid to be confrontational least they piss anyone off. Many times, right here on this blog and elsewhere, I have advocated (though not as clearly as you just have) the same in your face “atttack-tics”..but to no avail.
What always seems to get thrown back at me are statements such as “We are better than that” or “Speak the facts and the details…they’ll come around” or “Repeat and hammer home the absolute truth.. do not put yourself on the same level as the repugs.”…. yada yada yada.
What you have written is absolute truth. Sadly, we are losing these battles and will continue to… Unless and until progressives are ready willing and able to employ these attack-tics.
You don’t bring a book to a knife fight.
So how might the internet be attacked?
Here’s a tiny piece of “Science-Fiction”:
A “t error ist” virus causes ISE.
Internet State of Emergency.
Only ‘authorized’ access allowed………………….
Attack, good idea. We had a senator, Paul Wellstone, who fit that description. To bad for all of us he was taken out (murdered) less than a week before the election. Seems to me the Dems are not united, the ones that are, are but a mere handful. I suggust cut and run. If that handful would all resign and start their own party, that would be a fine attack. They could then run for office and undermine this traditional 2 lousy party system, just stop playing their game. I think most people take their life much more seriously than congress does. I’m proud to say I voted for Ralph Nader twice, the man who gave us the EPA and the Freedom of Information Act.
epoh,
And who would be our Obi…
james at 12:37
Ok smartie. How would you counter ‘cut and run’?
Use Correct and Recover (per Max Cleland). Not only does it imply that mistakes have been made but brings support our troops to the fore.
We need to recover before they are hurt more.
Thanks lotus–very kind. Seems like so many of us are dealing with parental loss these days. Three people in my office lost fathers suddenly over the last week. Sometimes feels a little eerie. At least in my case the loss is not going to be unexpected. We’ve had time to have their siblings come and visit (an aunt and a cousin I haven’t seen in years are coming out today), and there’s been time to talk and reminisce. We’re thankful for that.
Back on (EPU’d) topic:
“Head in the sand Republicans.” I’m sticking with it. Nice and dumb and obvious as well as appropriate. Doesn’t try to be too smart, it just hits the ball back into their side of the same dumb and obvious court. Somebody tell Kerry.
I see “head-in-the-sand Republicans” and raise you “hands-in-the-till Republicans,” DrBB!
STOP THE FASCISM
(For the slogans department)
In closing might I snark…
Head in Sand
or..
Head up Ass
Same republican position…Whats the diff?
TRex. Yaaah Hoooo! I’m so sick of seeing & hearing Dems. cowering & simpering whenever they’re bombarded by idiotic repug. talking points.
Yet I would share a little personal memory, for which I may be flamed. I don’t care; it’ll be worth it.
My dear parents, now gone but certainly still here in my heart, and with everyone who knew them, were staunch Republicans – but honest, frugal, generous, caring people. They would be horrified to witness what has become of “their” party. I have written letters to the editor, & swatted, HARD, at repug. congressfolk from time to time these last several years, slamming them on that very point. ‘No sir, I am not a Repub., but I knew some once and, sir, you’re no Republican,’ yah da yah da.
Is it just me, or do all simple slogans ring hollow to other progressives as well? Maybe that is why there is such a huge variety of suggestions here. I know every time I hear a Democrat, like Murtha last Sunday, speak forcefully, dispensing of any ready catch-phrases, I am relieved and drawn in to the discussion. When I hear slogans, I tune out. I was really impressed with John Edwards’ Press Club appearance yesterday, when given a question that included “cut and run” I felt there was no way he could fail to repeat it, but instead he answered thoughtfully, intelligently, and at length, without ever repeating that phrase.
I understand also the wish to attack, on being attacked, but I think there is nothing more impressive in the face of attack than civility and wisdom. Feingold, on the floor of the senate yesterday, was obviously angered and frustrated with his own party and chose to quote Robert Kennedy, “Past error is no excuse for it’s own perpetuation” in response to “cut and run.” That phrase won’t ever be a slogan; it is a thoughtful response.
As far as coinage, though, “Joe-nertia” is the best thing I’ve heard in a long time.
My part would be to call them “Ann Coulter conservatives” – every one of them, just as they call progressives “Michael Moore liberals”, and to use the mantra “MORE OF THE SAME Republicans”.
Yes! Attack attack attack. And for God’s sake don’t explain or apologize. I hate that…
Great post. I have getting so depressed lately. I keep losing hope as I see the corporate control over our political system. It is not just knowing how to argue, it is knowing that your arguments are going to be edited to make the corporate spokesman appear to be the one in the right. It is becoming increasing difficult to get the truth out.
Sellin’ snake oil to take oil.
You still buyin?
Best post I’ve seen on any blog. Add that the Republicans invented $3 gas and ignored global warming to pay off campaign debts.
True patriots defend the constitution!
Instead of frantically beginning to tap dance and show that you’re not a traitor and that you do support the troops, you fire back, “Why are you Republicans such cowards? Your leaders are all draft-dodgers who’ve never fired a shot at anything but a bunch of canned quails and old lawyers. You’re using the troops as human shields against the midterm elections! Do you like seeing our brave men and women in uniform slaughtered and killed? Or are you just too much of a coward to face the consequences of your failed policies in Iraq? Which is it? Do you just hate the soldiers or do you hate your constituents?”
As an alternative I suggest the following:
“You Republicans claim to be dedicated to the conflict in Iraq and the troops. You talk a lot, but you’re all unwilling to make any kind of political risk–let alone personal sacrifice–to support this cause you supposedly believe in.
“The conflict in Iraq is costing billions of dollars each month–pushing this nation deeper and deeper into debt. The troops in Iraq have inadequate armor to protect themselves from the IED’s and RPG’s that have killed and maimed so many. Thanks to cutbacks voted on by the Republican majority, our wounded troops in military hospitals have to pay for their own meals–some have literally given an arm and a leg fighting for their country, yet the Republicans are too cheap to feed these wounded soldiers in the hospital.
“I have yet to hear of any Republican with the guts to suggest repealing even part of the huge tax cuts they’ve given to the wealthiest citizens in this country in order to pay for this war. The CEO’s and shareholders of companies like Halliburton and Bechtel are making millions thanks to no-bid contracts in Iraq, yet the Republicans refuse to even suggest that these people pay even a little bit more in taxes to support the troops who are protecting their employees in Iraq. Talk about cutting and running!”
Great Post, TRex — if we can organize a VWR website, this will be front and center.
A dKos diary with a similar theme:
Interview Skills 101–Surviving the Fox Hunt
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2005/5/9/203535/9165
The secret to succeeding on Fox or any other hostile “interview” environment is to have one simple main point you want to make and keep making it no matter what the question is.
From The Art of War: “Do not swallow bait offered by the enemy.” No matter what intro question you are asked, give the pithy (shorter than 10 seconds long) and simple answer that expresses your main point. Don’t even worry about whether it sounds like a non sequitur. Rs do this all the time. This is an easy tactic to copy.
Keep repeating your main point until you have had a chance to say it in its entirety at least three times. Rephrase slightly if you have to so it is not as obvious that you are repeating yourself:
…
FIGHT THE POWER
Lyrics by James Brown
Time is truly wastin’
There’s no guarantee
Smile’s in the makin’
You gotta fight the powers that be
Got so many forces
Stayin’ on the scene
Givin’ up all around me
Faces full a’ pain
I can’t play my music
They say my music’s too loud
I kept talkin about it
I got the big run around
When I rolled with the punches
I got knocked on the ground
With all this bullshit going down
[. . .]
If you & I can – we got the power
Fight it, got the power fight it……..baby, baby
Fight it, fight the power
Best. Post. Ever…
“A Republican says, ‘All you liberals are cut-and-run traitors! You don’t support the troops!’
Instead of frantically beginning to tap dance and show that you’re not a traitor and that you do support the troops, you fire back, ‘Why are you Republicans such cowards? Your leaders are all draft-dodgers who’ve never fired a shot at anything but a bunch of canned quails and old lawyers. You’re using the troops as human shields against the midterm elections! Incredible post, Rex! It ought to be Rule#1: They make a charge – Don’t.Go.There. Go anywhere else, but not there.
One needs (talking heads, dems, pundits etc.) that the repubs repeatedly lie CITE THE LIES.
Remember to cost of the war?
The perscription drug program?
The PDB?
On almost every issue over time they are revealed to be LIARS.
Then there is the issue of double speak
Healthy Forrests
Operation Iraqi Freedom
We don’t do torture
We don’t wire tap w/o a warrant
Total BS
How about their OWN record of miltary service. Virtually NONE of the administration has served and the few in the senate that have are .. like McCain two faced whimps
It is ALWAYS a good strategy to point to the republican lies, misdeeds, mistatements and not let them frame the debate… what is the dem “solution” to X, Y, or Z?
Screw them.
AWESOME post!!! Something I’ve been thinking for SO LONG!!!
I HOPE dems are reading this and their “consultants” and their ilk…
FIGHT! ATTACK!! WIN!!
Did anyone see Carvill on CNN this morning around 8.45ish?
The interviewer actually said to him (to paraphrase) You keep telling us what you’re not… why don’t you try telling the voters what you will be… It’s not enough to say “We’re not Repubs.” You need to clearly tell the voters what you PLAN TO DO.
I thought it was brilliant and was clearly shocked at the line of questioning… If only they do that for ALL the people they interview.
This needs to be shouted from the rooftops.
If the D.C. Dems dont’ understand this, we are doomed.
This is all the Democratic Party needs to read and do to win not only in November but going forward.
I say step one is to start attacking the media so that they can’t deny Dems the megaphone, as they are wont to do. And a good place to start is by accusing them of all being on Rove’s payroll and if they deny it, say “well you should be; you’re reading from his script.”
Jane
I lost my beloved husband and beautiful
youg daughter both in the past two years.
Grief will engulf you. Busy yourself with meaningless things, cry a lot, scream if you need to. But as CS Lewis said after losing his beloved wife, in time, one day you wake up and hear the birds again. We are programmed to live
and even in death our loved ones will always live in our hearts.
This was a very entertaining post! The final photo with comment was the perfect capstone!
Reframing, yes! CUT the baloney AND RUN the country. They are the majority, the lockstep rubberstamp republicans control all legislation so whatever is all fup duck is their plate of cookies.
Bully for you!!! Thats what I have been saying..bust their chops..
