I am so pleased to announce the latest addition to the FDL Book Salon schedule: On Sunday July 15 & 23 we'll be hosting a discussion of George Soros' The Age of Fallibility: Consequences of the War on Terror, and on July 23 George himself will be joining us for the discussion.
I've read an advanced copy of the book, and being the political philosophy nerd that I am, it was such an intriguing read on so many levels. The neocons who have overtaken the foreign and military policies in this nation are not going to be happy with the political philosophy that Mr. Soros details -- just as Leo Strauss would not agree, I also doubt that Dick Cheney will be joining the Soros fan club any time soon.
The first half of the book details the philosophical and biographical roots (to some extent) of the formation of Mr. Soros' core beliefs and how they have guided him throughout his lifetime. The second half of the book details the issues which we face as a nation, and as an interactive world where corporate and individual interests are often merged with the global-political need for cooperation and negotiation writ large.
The Age of Fallibility also calls into question the fundamental flaws of the false "War on Terror" public relations meme that the Bush Administration has used in the political realm to prop itself up again and again, all the while George Bush's foreign, economic and military policies are failing to address the issues at the roots of the rise of fundamentalist Islam and the public decline of moderate positions worldwide in both the religious and political realms, and the ever-increasing disparity in economic situations and the resentment that such disparity can cause, along with the loss of hope and ever-increasing anger.
Whatever your political affiliation, this is a book which will start some serious conversation -- and ought to do so, considering the issues of import which Mr. Soros' singles out as needing more in-depth analysis and cooperative efforts globally: nuclear non-proliferation and environmental degradation, as the primary questions of our age.
We are very pleased that Mr. Soros has agreed to join us in the FDL Book Salon on July 23rd. We hope that you will join us on July 15th (when we will have a special guest host, to be announced soon) and again on July 23rd with Mr. Soros for an important conversation about the values that guide us at our core, and how to implement those values for a greater benefit, with an eye toward more cooperation and a more multi-lateral approach to foreign policy -- one which is sorely lacking in the current Administration.
PS -- I meant to also include a link to Mr. Soros' website, which includes much more information about the book.

Mr. Soros!!!
Fitz Me too!
I’ve read the first graf only — and had to pick my jaw up already!
B.R.A.V.O.!!!
Any bets on when the gooper swiftboating of Soros will begin?
Christy Hardin Smith, when do you ever freakin’ SLEEP?
between unscom and img, we knew every military asset in iraq before “shock and awe” started, down to overly-sharp toothpicks.
Of course, the wizards of transformation thought that stuff was tedious, and it was much more fun to watch the ahmed and judy show.
shoe #5:
Ongoing. For years.
BTW, Christy, heckuva great get!
lotus #6 - Christy is The Whistler. And she knows many things, for she walks by night…
Thank you for covering this book by my hero!
What a man!
Soros!…and fitz!
Rootz!
This is a cool site. Always poppin’- always *g*rinnin’. I’d love to hear George’s opinion on Policy Analysis Markets …
http://www.nex.com/innews.htm
And if he’s read this brief essay that mentions him in passing, ‘ On negativity’

lotus #5, the Gooper’s pee their collective pants at the mere mention of his name. Picture rending of cloth and gnashing of teeth.
day-umm, all I can say is day-umm
I swear to goodness, my jaw actually dropped open when the screen refreshed
I am sooo freakin’ there
Who knows..what e-vil…lurks in the hearts of men?
All the bloggers at FDL know…bwahahahaha!
Great to see something other than a picture of Cheney at the top of the site. :)
Hey Mary !
a little gift -
Padilla - today

Swopa, 5:03, as per usual,
LMAO.
This will be an interesting read. Every time I have seen Mr. Soros he seems to be very erudite. A bonus discussion on Laissez-faire policies in global currency markets would be nice. I would love his take on that. :-)
Be still my heart… a man who really supports and democracy both here and abroad. I cannot wait and am so impressed, Christy!
Dang, Sorry shoephone, gotcha mixed up w/ lotus fer a sec.
delete my and… too excited.
al-scooter - LOL! (gosh, we’re old)
Busted - rending cloth? Heck, they’re too busy rending the U.S. Constitution.
We can ask him what currency will be ascendant in the 21st century. I’m thinking lentils…
Busted @22 - ’s okay. (it’s a compliment to be mixed up with lotus)
Cheney Awards DeFrank for Attacks on Bush?!?
by emptywheel
“Alright, this is really SaltinWound and Quicksilver’s scoop–but it’s too good not to elevate into a full post. Apparently, Dick just awarded Thomas DeFrank an award for “accurate and substantial reports help to further educate the public on matters concerning the presidency.”
‘Thomas M. DeFrank, the Washington Bureau Chief for the New York Daily News, was awarded the Gerald R. Ford Prize for Distinguished Reporting on the Presidency on Monday. DeFrank received the award from Vice President Dick Cheney at a National Press Club luncheon….’”
(Cheney is “thanking” DeFrank for publishing DeadEye’s leaks about Bush and Rove)
speaking of lentils, I’ve got a fabuous recipe - oh, wait, that’s not til Saturday.
Wow, you guys just don’t slow down, nap or no nap.
And Wow, re Padilla.
For Shoephone, al-scooter and the rest of us old farts,

Bravo!! Way to go FDL and George Soros! Woohoo! I guess YearlyKos was just a starter for you folks.
Why not go for a Nobel Prize winner next? Joseph Stiglitz has two new books out (Fair Trade for All, and Making Globalization Work). If Krugman can’t do an interview, maybe you can get Stiglitz. Sorry can’t help shilling for an economist to come on and do a book sooner or later.
Christy, forgive me if this is a tacky request. I prefer not to buy from Amazon since they donate to Republicans. But I’d love to buy these books through FDL so the site gets the credit. Might FDL consider putting up Barnes and Noble or Powell’s links to the books you feature?
I would suggest Jacques Barzun, but his health is extemely frail, which is understandable, given his age. “From Dawn to Decadence” is intimidating in its heft, but once you start, it’s irresistable.
The compliment was all mine, shoe!
I mean the HONOR, shoe!
I mean …
Hell, you know what I mean!
If anybody really cares, David Schuster on KO thinks that Carville might’ve attended last night’s Save Our Scooter (SOS) dinner party that his wife hosted. But then she pals around with some of his buds, too. It’s all just a big Beltway club, I guess.
Nice footage of the GOP glitterati too:
“Barbara Comstock looking ravishing in white…”
“And there’s Scooter himself looking as anxious as a bear in a Japanese period piece…”
Meanwhile, Shuster says the case itself is in a lull phase now, so maybe we can cut Christy some slack?
How about Stephen Hawking, via Atta Turk. How silly of him to worry about global warming.
While listening to Republican senators argue for an unending war in Iraq, I have checked some official Senate biographies.
Sen. John Thune: No record of military service
Sen. Sam Brownback: No record of military service
Sen. Jeff Sessions: No record of military service (born 1946–was prime age for military service during Vietnam).
Perhaps these distinguished senators have medical conditions that I am unaware of which precluded them from volunteering to serve their country. If so, I will apologize for bringing up the issue.
So glad Christy gave us a heads up on this one. Maybe I’ll actually have time to read it before the book club. Just started Geoffrey Stone’s “Perilous Times: Free Speech in Wartime - From the Sedition Act of 1798 to the War on Terrorism”.
I highly recommend. (after the Soros, that is).
Looking forward to it.

now I haven’t even clicked on the LaPierre link yet, but isn’t he essentially saying Darth & Chimpy are powerless right here in the ol US of A???
I just wanted to stop by and second Christy’s recommend on George Soros’s book. I, too, have read the advance copy, as well as having an opportunity to speak with Mr. Soros through a conference call. His book is very meaty, but so important. It’s a great addition to the FDL book salon. You all will enjoy it, no doubt.
“It’s all just a big Beltway club, I guess.”
I don’t know, I’m having a harder and harder time thinking of that kind of thing as just collegiality. The division of benefits between the two sides of all this buddy-buddy seems a bit asymmetric these days.
John Casper, that is TOO, just TOOOOO!
I think George Soros is smart.
I remember back in 98 (gawd that seems eons ago thx to the rule of the dark side) when Soros was on the cover of Time. I wrote something that got published in the letters right up top in a special box, iirc, something inane like “George is the man.” :) I’ll be here!
Just heard on the news the VA administration plans on dealing with the theft of millions of vet ID’s on that computer by really playing hardball:
They’re going to send all vets a letter about it.
Sometime in August.
Actually it might have been 97 now that I think about where I was living…
Thanks Christy!!
al-Scooter 37
as anxious as a bear
As I recall, in Scooterland it isn’t so much the bear as small female children who needed to be anxious.
OTOH, if they could read, bears would probably be anxious too. Never mind.
You’re right, he is. I got that after one conversation speaking with him, as well as listening him react to others on the call. Someone brought up O’Reilly. It was priceless.
pros #46:
Judging from the footage of the Carville residence, I don’t think they’re badly off. There was no breakdown on which side of the partnership brought in the greater share of revenue, though.
So you could be right.
Last chance for feedback, I am talking by phone with future Senator Webb tomorrow.
Iraq, check. Iran, check. Net neut, check.
Other = ??
shoephone,
“Just heard on the news the VA administration plans on dealing with the theft of millions of vet ID’s on that computer by really playing hardball:”
I got one last week. The letter mentioned that 25M ID’s were on the laptop!
al-scooter, on first read I thought it said “which side of the partnership brought in the greater shame of revenue, though.”
it works, either way.
Oh dear - Serena - OK, I’ll watch the repeat of Lou Dobbs later this evening - since you say so. Swore I’d never endure the crazy ole goat again. Second only to Wolf Blitzer, Lou Dobbs annoys this cranky ole newspaper brat to distraction… Keith is the only newscast on cable I routinely care to catch.
Mary #52:
That was KO’s assessment. I’m sufficiently uncultured that I didn’t know bears routinely appeared in Japanese period pieces.
Babs, however, did look ravishing. Given the framing of the shot, I couldn’t quite see if she was carrying a poisoned apple.
“The Dread Pirate Irving as Anxious Bear”
Whutta pickcher.
egregious, how about global warming and alternative energy? checks and balances? election fraud?
RB #57:
Let’s go with your version.
I’ve never understood why liberals and Democrats don’t brag up Soros more. He’s a self-made man with a hell of a life story as a refugee from Hungarian fascism, the Nazis, and the Communists (in that order).
The anti-Soros wingers skirt the line of anti-Semitism, and requently step across it. (They’ve also accused him of being a Nazi collaborator, based on one thing that he unknowingly did when he was 15, plus the fact that he survived at all.)
I’d set our millionaire against theirs any time. Scaife and Moon are close to mentally illness (Moon claims to be the elder brother of Jesus Christ), and Murdoch is a sleazy reptile. Only the Koch brothers seem to be normal-range relatively-OK guys, though their politics is nasty.
I did a little sketch of the Soros story here: Soros vs. Scaife.
egregious:
healthcare crisis, check?
energy/environment, check?

Cozumel - sorry to hear that. It’s one of the most outrageous blunders of the century (I’m including the 20th C. in there)
Rest assured, we at FDL will never know your real identity - and wouldn’t dare consider stealing it.
well, BustedKnuckles might, but not until he gets through with Karl Rove!
Party on at the Book Salon, dudes! Do we know how to start some conversations, or what? Kudos to FDL for having Mr. Soros join us.
Mary 52,
Way to stick it to Scooter.
(ducks flying tomatoes)

Position on unitary executive (unlimited power) doctrine of presidential power?
egregious 55,
Second the healthcare and energy/environment questions. How about privacy/NSA?
ooh, what neurophius says at 69 and 70.
lotus at 6 — lately, not so much. *g* Sorry for the delay in response, had to run out and pick up some dinner. Mmmmm…decaf mocha, french onion soup and Greek salad.
shoephone,
LOL The letter said no ID’s to their knowledge have been used, yet. It was home burglary. I’m not worried about it. “They” probably just wanted the laptop.
Munch ‘n’ slurp wi’ glee, Christy — you made a lotta campers ver’ happy just now! (Again.)
Stolen personal identification: this is not an accident, nor a random crime. This is a concerted plan to gather information on hundreds of millions of Americans for a private database, thus avoiding embarrassing questions of Constitutional legality. Then the government accepts this data, no problem. Except maybe the CITIZENS OF THE FORMERLY FREE AMERICA.
Look at how many ‘accidental’ incidents of stolen data there are. Sooner or later one must allow for the possibility that datamining is not ‘accidental’ theft but…deliberate. Money talks. Data walks.
I am particularly angry about the theft of personal data of our soldiers/sailors/veterans. [G**d*** them for preying on OUR MILITARY who are serving our nation with their very lives.]
all 9 Democratic women Senators are coming up right now on Larry King …
LindaR at 33 — we’ve been talking about adding that in, but we’ve been so busy the last few weeks, we just haven’t gotten around to it. And for the forseeable future, Jane’s going to be tied up with her mom, and I’ve got my hands full. So at some point in the future, sure we’ll probably consider it — it’s just not going to happen this week (or likely next…). (Although I am a Powell’s fan myself.)
egregious at 55,
To start the ball rolling, how about asking him if he saw Frontline (if not, why not?) and what’s his take on it.
ot, sorry
think progress has the scoop, we have to jump on this as the bald faced lie that it is;
I love that bit;
“assessed to still exist”…good one…assessed by who? the people that want to lie, that’s who
“assessed to still exist”…
Yeah, so’s Vesuvius. But not a peep since — what was it? ‘43 or’44?
Christy @ 78 — thank you. It’s another way of directing blogosphere wealth in a way that supports and reflects our values. And, for that matter, demonstrates the power of the blog.
Plus, what a nice thing for Powell’s!
PS: What a cool panel on Larry King!
just a few years back, while digging for construction in Washington DC, discarded poison gas munitions from World War One testing were discovered. Does that mean that George Bush has concealed chemical weapons? Perhaps Rick has thoughts on that…
I always thought Santorum was more concerned about WMDs from his century of expertise like catapults and crossbows…
You don’t get rich outsmarting the international currency markets by being a dummy, and you don’t get to be Presi
oh, wait
al - you have read the reviews on Scooter’s The Apprentice ?
If not, google.
I’m guessing even Jane & Christy won’t pull off having the Dread Pirate Scooter show up to discuss his book.
OTOH - the world is a better place for the fact that they aren’t really trying to pull that one off.
SOROS!!!! So cool. Jane & Christy - the best.
This is more appropriate for one of the Dead-Eye threads, but now and then I like to go and browse through the Think Progress “yearbook” of the architects of Iraq.
http://thinkprogress.org/the-a.....-they-now/
The trip is worth it, just for the pic of Bartlett and Rice. Plus, I always crack up to find, yet again, that the OSP realityshaper, Feith, He is co-chairman of a project at Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government to write an academic book on how to fight terrorism.
BTW - was Perle ever indicted for anything in the Hollinger mess?
Hmm — kinda don’t think Perle’s been indicted yet, Mary.
Wouldn’t that have made a big splash here, if so?
Christy:
Thank you for choosing this book. Soros is one of my heroes, we share very similar past history. Both my grandfathers were sent to labor camp in the 50s, tortured, killed, and as a result my family was blacklisted. I know this sounds terrible and I hope no one interprets it as bragging… just know that everyone in my family has a sense of humor is an optimist .. and with a stubborn sense of justice.
I look forward to reading it and I’ll make my dad read it too. He’s much smarter than me and I’ll try to get him to post.
kalina77 at 87 — thanks for sharing that, and I hope that your father will join in the discussion. And there is a lot to discuss in this book, let me tell you…
egregious -
The consolidation of intelligence within a line of military command and under military officers.
The issue of civilian command, duties of military obedience to civilian command, respectful dissent, and the doctrine of illegal orders when the DOJ is crafting a new doctrine of layered legal opinions that in a time of conflict, there is no order the President can give that is illegal.
Competency of appointees and Congressional oversight, rights, and duties.
I think the recently struck down amendment to have a Truman style investigation into contracts awarded for Afghanistan and Iraq.
Fed response time and duties in the context of natural disasters and where National Guard should fit in and what is going on with equipment, availability etc. of national guard.
He’s going to have to be prepped to have something to say on immigration and abortion - so you may as well ask.
Mary, lotus - pretty sure no indictment for Perle re: Hollinger (yet - but hope springs a turtle, after all . . .)
Mary, Feith now has an outline for his book:
Chapter 1: Fabricate stories about the link to terrorists of the country you wish to invade.
Chapter 2: Fabricate stories about the WMD being “sought,” “bought,” and “reconstituted” by the country you wish to invade.
Chapter 3: Hint darkly that the people who flew planes into . . . all came from/trained in the country you wish to invade.
Chapter 4: Put together a coalition of the bribable . . . er, the willing, to send 12 soldiers each from their 200 man armies.
Chapter 5: Plant false stories with the NYT and WaPo about all the reasons for going to war, then show up on MTP to say, “see, even the liberal press says we need to do this.”
Chapter 6. Have no plans for what you do once you overrun the presidential palace. Mismanage everything from there on. This will create more terrorists to fight in the future.
Chapter 7. Pretend for 3 years you haven’t made a mistake and then lie about it.
Chapter 8. Label anyone who questions what you’ve done a traitor, not supporting our troops, and willing to “cut and run.”
Chapter 9. Dismantle any independent intelligence capability, any independent Congressional oversight, any independent judicial review.
Chapter 10. Get a good lawyer, in case you’re indicted.
New thread by Jane!
me to me # 79
Munitions from the Second and even the First World War are still being found in France and elsewhere in Europe every year. It is not unusual then that old munitions are still being found around Iraq given its many recent conflicts.
Marty at 94 — I’d suggest you read the next thread up. You might be surprised at how much shit TNR is full of…then again, maybe not so much.
egregious at 5:58—I’ve been wondering about exactly that. If you find out anything, could you drop a link?
I just dropped by Mr. Soros’s website and found an excerpt from his book. One passage, from page xvii in the Prologue, impressed me enough that I’d like to quote it here, and maybe it will inspire more people to read the whole book:
scarecrow -
Perle’s of wisdom.
egregious,
it’s something I’ve been getting emails about by an anxious friend. (Subject line: More stolen laptops!)
Did a quick Google. Equifax, ING, Aetna, Ameriprise, Hotels.com are among the companies that have had data stolen.
This site shows more although they’re not all stolen laptops, by any means.
http://www.privacyrights.org/a.....eaches.htm
I’m in EPU land,but DAMN.George Soros?Awesome.
Of course you know this now makes you one of Soros’ evil liberal minions don’t you?(mwahahaha, bats flying, lightening in the backround, you get the idea…)
I never heard of Mr Soros until Falafel Boy mentioned him(I heard a clip on Air America one afternoon)so I googled him.The wingnuts go nuts over him,I figured he had to be a good guy just because of that, lol. But I looked up more stuff and he proves that people who actually EARN their wealth by hard work are usually much better people at heart than those who have everything given to them.
Should be a fascinating conversation,I’m marking the date on my calendar now.
