Ned and his family...tell me that wouldn't look good on a Christmas card from his Senate office?
Ned Lamont picked up another endorsement today in his run for the Senate. And it was a big one -- not so much a national name, but someone who is a household name in the state of Connecticut.
Ned's latest endorsement comes from George Jepson, immediate past president of the Connecticut state Democratic party, who had this to say:
"It begins with the war, but is not limited to the war," Jepson said. "I sincerely like Joe Lieberman. But I disagree profoundly with his unyielding support for George Bush's war in Iraq, his embrace of the so-called 'culture of life' in overriding the rights of Terry Schiavo, his failure to be an advocate for civil rights issues, his support for school vouchers, his being the only New England Senator to vote to allow the federal government to put a natural gas pipeline in Long Island Sound."
And this:
Lamont's presence on the ticket will help all Democrats, "because we will be speaking in one voice," added Jepson.
This comes on the heels of an interview with Sen. Joe Lieberman, in which Holy Joe refused to rule out the possibility that he would run as an independent if he loses the primary. At least, at this stage, it's looking like Lieberman won't bolt the party before the primary, if you can take him at his word on this.
Lieberman was careful to couch his veiled independent candidacy threats this time as "an independent Democrat," but I like to think of it as being a plain old Sore Loser. (As Jane says, it's the Cut And Run 2006 Campaign.)
In the past five days, CT bloggers have gotten both Democratic gubernatorial candidates, the Dem. Sec of state and 2 of the 3 top-tier U.S. House challengers to pledge their support to the Democratic nominee. CTBlog has more.
And rumor has it...there are more endorsements to come for Ned. Oh yeah, feel the Joementum. (Or not.)
UPDATE: Connecticut Bob has an hilarious breakdown of the Joe statements. Must see.

Did Joementum promise to support a Dem candidate, if it’s not him? Is it still being contemplated that he would get national Dem money if he runs as an independent?
So much for Ned Neutrality. Go Lamont!
YEAH!
Boy, those people look like they’re really enjoying each other’s company, don’t they?
Good on Jepson! Hope there are lots more where he came from.
Any word on the Spacely Sprockets endorsement?

Too many teeth in that picture. Candidates need to remember to limit blinding enamel exposure. Voters won’t be able to read ballots.

what a beautifully balanced statement from Jepson
considering we are all strong supporters of Lamont’s, we are really having too much fun mocking the photo, you know!
where does Al Gore’s non-endorsement of Liebersplat* fit into the scheme of things?
*kudos to whoever coined that one
Speaking of Lierbersplat, while out blogging this morn I got some joementum on my shoes.
I once knew someone who, on her divorce, decided she wanted a hopeful, optimistic surname and picked “Jetson.” Very beautiful woman, but every time I saw her, I had to stifle a giggle.
Gore’s non-endorsement is a way for folk to turn away Lieberman fundraising entreaties without guilt…
Erm.. I believe the gentleman’s name is spelled “Jepsen”.
Congrats to Ned. And George didn’t even get around to mentioning that Joe thinks rape victims should have to go hospital shopping for pregnancy preventative treatment.

Ever time I read this I get steamed. It seems to be the narrative for the NeoCon/BushCo methodology.
This is in defiance of the basic logic of how action and awareness works, from the the level of cellular dynamics, right up to individual autonomy.
The problem is, if they genuinely believe this it illustrates a gross ignorance on the part of those policy makers ‘actions’. Its like some addled adolescent explanation for why the rules shouldn’t apply to them. Like an excuse habitually trotted out by some priviledged ivy league punk insulated from the consequences of his actions by wealth, prestige, and courtiers. Hmmm, now who fits that description…
I can see this coming from Bush; it has that kind of sub-intellectual ‘let them eat cake’, swagger to it. I could also see him having said it, and then more junior officials parroting it around to others. It has the feel a Straussian apologetic also however, so its possible someone laid this explanation in front of Bush, in a dumbed down fashion, and it became an internal ‘white house’ talking point.
For an administration official to be suggesting that policy is inscrutable because, ‘We’ve decided we’re just going to flail about, because we’re the biggest fish in the bowl.” is lunacy, they should have been called on that right away. Yet I’ve been reading this passage as the narrative used for justification for over two years now. And here it is once again, in what is probably its original context courtesy of Froomkin.
Its like a left brain deciding to go its own without the right brain. Action without reflection will work, for awhile, but sometimes the action is wrong, or based on wrong impressions, and then reflection is needed to apply correction so that subsequent ‘actions’ are not wasted.
Thats one of those funny things we use to base our ideas of history and memory on. But Nooooo…since America is an empire, it doesn’t need history or memory, it’ll just make em up as it goes along. I guess thats where Faux news comes in.
I guess this is the money quote, in my estimation.
grr….apologies for the long-ish rant, and for being off-topic, again.
Eh… Houston has terrible drainage problems, but I don’t think it’s even possible to get anywhere near as bad as NOLA.
There is a question about the Lamont/Lieberman race that I have not seen addressed. Many have commented on how hypocritical and disloyal Joe would look if,before the primary, he began circulating petitions for an independent race. Some have suggested that other people might do that on his behalf while leaving him with deniability. I seem to recall that in my state, in order for signatures on a petition to be valid, the candidate must somehow authorize them. Is this the case in Connecticut? If so, that would make it harder for Joe to have it both ways. Is there any Connecticut insider here who can address that issue? I’m sure Lamont’s staff people know the answer; maybe one of them could delurk long enough to tell us. Go Lamont.
We the voters must put all politicians on notice that they will be replaced if they do not properly represent us.
Good luck to her and you, BobbyG. I don’t recall ever flying into Houston so can’t tell you how the airport’s situated (but nothing’s very high there … ‘cept the buildings).

And I thought scotch broom was a disaster. (H/T to Slashdot).
Speaking of “Independent Democrats,” I’d be happy to lump Joementum in with Jim Hurysz, the local whackjob who runs as an “Independent Democrat” against our Democratic congressman.
I’m generally pretty soft-spoken, but when he showed up during the campaign two years ago at a Deaniac grassroots event I helped organize, and claimed he was following Dean’s admonition to get involved in politics, I bitched him out and told him in no uncertain terms that Dean hadn’t said to try to get a Congressional nomination and when you lost, declare that the local Democrats were meanies and take your marbles and try to take advantage of the good name Democrats have worked hard to build to undermine the candidate those Democrats have nominated.
Come to think of it, pretty much the same applies to Lieberman. “Independent Democrat,” my ass!
Cujo: I’m glad the Australian Army is fighting giant toxic toads over there so we don’t have to fight them in the streets of Indianapolis ! God Bless Prime Minister Howard !
BobbyG:
In Houston, the worst problems this morning were reported in the southeastern part of the city, in the area around William P. Hobby Airport, and in Pasadena to the west. The National Weather Service reported that at the airport, almost 6 inches of rain fell within 75 minutes.

The way I read the CT Sec. of State site…
1) - Nominating Petition for “New Party” or “No Party” candidates for U.S. Senate must be filed with Sec. of State by 4:00 on August 9th:
http://www.sots.ct.gov/Electio.....n/2006.pdf
2) - Required form is called “Application for Nominating Petition”, and requires the “Candidate’s Statement of Consent”
http://www.sots.ct.gov/Electio.....ED602b.pdf
Hm, aReader 59, that doesn’t say the candidate’s consent is required to gather signatures . . .
about Kaus having the touch to date Coulter — he’s evidently got the touch for Sarin, VX or Ricin too …
*ilson, maybe they’ll get carried away, bite each other, and croak.
At top of Page Two of CT form, this text appears:
“Each of the undersigned consents to the placing of his or her name in a nominating petition as a candidate for the office specified…”
I take it Lieberman would have to authorize any gathering of petition signatures, prior to the gathering.
http://www.sots.ct.gov/Electio.....ED602b.pdf
Getting warmer, aReader . . .
Yay Ned!
My two cents: I think it is surprising that Lieberman doesn’t bolt now. I think he needs signatures and time to position himself as an “Independant.” If he stays in the primary he loses crucial time pretending to be a Democrat, albeit Bill O’Falafel O’Reilly’s favorite Democrat. (I guess O’Reilly must be fuming at the “terrorists,” I mean CT Dems. )
Lieberman & his minions have really put themselves in a tight corner. On one hand they call Weicker & Ned “Republicans” like in the stupid commercial. On the other they, e.g. Droney, imply that Ned and his supporters are left-wing liberal wackos and weirdos.

Condolezza Rice warns North Korea against testing a long-range ballistic missle. It’s okie-dokie for us to do that, but not them. No hypocrisy there. Right? Here are Nominating Petition instructions:
http://www.sots.ct.gov/Electio....._ED607.pdf
- A candidate for an elective office who is not nominated for such office by a major or minor party may secure a place on the ballot by filing a nominating petition
- Before the Secretary of the State may issue nominating petition … the application must contain … a signed statement by each candidate that he consents to having his name on the petition
cbl: all Cretans are liars anyways
From the application to start gathering signatures:
“Be sure to enclose page 2, Statement of Consent signed by each candidate; page 3, Town Clerk’s Statement, signed by clerk of each candidate’s town of residence (multiple copies of page 3 may be attached if necessary); and Application for Reservation of Party Designation if required.”
It sure looks to me like the candidate has to sign saying they intend to be on the ballot before you can start collecting signatures.
so if anybody gets discovered covertly circulating valid petitions for Joe, Joe can’t disavow them if the petitions are properly signed by Joe? it looks like it…
aReader 12:25 p.m.
Thanks for the info. on Connecticut election laws. The wording of the documents you have cited seems to suggest that nominating petitions must be issued by the Secretary of State, and that applications for those petitions must include the candidate’s authorization (apparently prior to the petitions being signed by voters). That is how I read it, anyway. If that is the case, it would seem to require Lieberman to show his cards prior to the primary election and open him up to charges that he is trying to have it both ways–unless he were to withdraw from the Democratic primary at the time he began authorizing petitions to be circulated for his independent nomination. In any event, it appears the voters would know what was up well before the primary.

Only questions about Conn. Nominating Petitions…
Does issuing a Petition become a matter of public record? If so, then just monitor the Sec State to keep Joe honest. If not, then Joe can begin collecting signatures under-the-radar.
Oooo, juicy times in Ye Olde Nutmeg State . . .
I’ve also heard the Lamont Lawyers are watching the ‘petition-issuing office’ like hawks, awaiting Joe trying to sneak petitions out under cover of darkness …

I would be shocked if issuance of a petition to be placed on the ballot were not a public record. I would assume that Connecticut has some kind of open records or freedom of information act. I hope the press is monitoring developments at the Secretary of State’s office.

Well there you go, ET: two problems, one solution!
Of course it could turn out that the CT secretary of state is an old crony of Joementum, in which case watching like hawks (*ilson) would be a necessity.
There is a movie called ‘Cane Toads‘ (IMDB link) which as it turns about is an unintentionally hilarious documentary, about how the Australian government had imported these giant ‘cane toads’ to combat vermin that were pestering some sugar cane plantations, only to find out that the cane toads had nothing to do with sugar cane, and no interest in the vermin causing the original problem.
The result was a landscape littered with these large, rapidly breeding venomous toads that had no natural enemies. Likely the australian gov’t is still trying to find ways to check the cane toad population.
Its still cited as one of the most classic examples of govenmental bungling on record. I guess Bush has knocked that down, or perhaps there is a move underway to diminish the apparent incomptence of this admin, but putting it in context with other contenders.
At late night last night I queried about whether or not we should support Lieberman if he squeeks out a narrow victory, which is possible. I’ve donated 2x to Lamont, and don’t live in CT, but I would support Lieberman - reluctantly - if he does win.

I agree, I think it would be important for the netroots to support Lieberman if he wins the Democratic primary, in order to refute the “terrorists” label and to support a Democratic takeover of the Senate. Lamont himself has pledged to support Joe in the general election if Joe wins the primary. But if he has enough strength to win the primary, I would guess a victory in November would not be much of a problem, and that we could concentrate our efforts on races in other states. Lieberman certainly has not earned our active support; it would be strictly a pragmatic decision to elect a Senator who at least still calls himself a Democrat.
If you don’t mind, Christy, I’ll email Howler and let them know.

As I recall, ck and I had a couple of exchanges about a Virtual War Room (VWR)(ck suggested the term). I think it is important for the Democrats to assemble some mechanism for putting out a consistent message the way the right does. I see two problems:
1) It would require some resources (I would think several full-time people); and
2) To really be effective it would need coordination with the DNC and with Democrats in Congress, and with issues like Iraq dividing Democrats, I don’t know whether that is possible. It is hard to project the image of a consensus if we don’t even have one.
I would be interested in hearing from Christy, Jane and Pach on this issue. How do we generate a voice strong enough to be heard over the Mighty Wurlitzer?
Jenny - a Democratic majority - even if it is gained with Lieberman as one of the Democrats - will give the Dems the right to run the show, and isn’t that what we’re fighting for the opportunity to do?
Were I a CT resident, I would hold my nose and vote for Lieberman if he were the candidate, since we can change nothing else until we change the big picture.

Hi Anne -
I’d normally agree, but Lieberman in particular is so bad for the party, he undercuts us every chance he gets. He does great damage, in my opinion.
Well, ha, I’m glad I don’t live in CT because I’d be in quite a quandry about it. That being said, I’ve decided, from my gut and heart, to vote my conscience from now on. I’ve never veered from straight Dem ticket until now, but I feel very strongly about voting for someone who represents me. I don’t know how else to handle it. No more triangulation for me.
Just one woman’s feeling. And thanks for your response. :)

It’s not necessary to support Lieberman. If he wins the primary, he wins. The Republicans are not putting a whole lot into the campaign because they obviously like Joe just fine.
Personally, I think Lamont just has to win. A Lamont win will revive voters and help CT Dems win house seats. Lieberman has the opposite effect. seriously. He doesn’t look too shiny, purty or clean. Voters in CT are depressed by corruption in DC, the rackets in CT & Lieberman’s got the whiff of DC corruption. It depresses the heck out of me too.
his looks were the only thing Dan Quayle had going for him (except his newspaper-family inherited fortune)
Best to deal with Lieberman like a band-aid… just “ribbit” off.
The Courant quotes polling showing Joe winning a 3 way race w/56 percent. But, imho, that’s based on nothing concrete. I firmly believe Lamont is an ‘idea whose time has come.’ Courant articles over the last couple days quote veteran politicos who admit they have no idea what will happen if Joe goes this way or that. One is quoted as saying ‘It’s all in the gut.” If we have sized up Joe that’s one thing we know is lacking. And, conversely, just the opposite for Ned.
Fer instance, just go back to say last Nov (I don’t know when Lamont started his move, but just say Nov)– who could have imagined such an entrenched Sen like Joe would face a party convention challenge just months later, and would easily convert to a primary challenge.
imho, Lamont wins, easily. His team is effiecient, and Joe is running Lotus 1-2-3 campaign. He can’t tack (or even ‘attack’) w/o problems in both consistency and message.
but that don’t mean Ned don’t need all the help he can get.
Best wishes Ned!
“Float like a butterfly; sting like a bee! Rumble, young man, rumble!”
Lamont’s smile is real. Quayle’s was just a chimpy fear grimace.
