Since Holy Joe seems to be channeling the ghost of Lee Atwater of late, some are speculating that Bush’s favorite Democrat has taken on Karl Rove as a campaign strategist. Says Paul Bass in the Hartford Courant about Joe’s new ad (above):
The commercial evokes one that helped Lieberman first win his seat in 1988. That 1988 ad depicted the then-incumbent, Lowell Weicker, as a fat lazy bear who never showed up for votes in his third term in office. The ad was significant for two reasons: It inaugurated a new era in Connecticut of low-grade personal TV attack ads that belittle opponents, make fun of their appearance or magnify minor or out-of-context portions of their record. And, once he too was firmly ensconced in his third term in the Senate, Lieberman himself repeated Weicker’s absentee record. Lieberman spent much of 2003 running for president–and away from his job as senator. He skipped 54 percent of all Senate votes that year. He was absent for every vote on 63 of the 115 days in which the Senate cast votes. According to one estimate, that meant the taxpayers overpaid Lieberman $38,828.79 in salary that year.
[]
The new ad brings another modern Beltway campaign attack mode to Connecticut: Bush adviser Karl Rove’s strategy of taking your own weakness and turning it into your opponent’s weakness instead, through relentless misrepresentation of facts.
(I’ll just pause here for a moment and declare my open admiration for local journalists like Bass and Colin McEnroe, as well as local Connecticut bloggers, who are savvy about the history and the permutations of state politics and unafraid to write about them honestly.)
But back to Turdblossom. He’s going to bat for Holy Joe:
"The Internet for the Left of the Democratic Party has served as a way to mobilize hate and anger — hate and anger, first and foremost, at this President and Conservatives, but then also at people within their own party whom they consider to be less than completely loyal to this very narrow, very out-of-the-mainstream, very far Left-wing ideology that they tend to represent."
Seems pretty clear to me — Rove thinks it’s a travesty that we’re encouraging a challenger to Holy Joe. Lieberman has also agreed to debate Ned Lamont, which seems to indicate he’s not planning to bolt the party before July 6 anyway. Since he’s collected the prestigious endorsement of Bill O’Reilly you have to wonder at the wisdom of this — what will he do without all his Republican pals to back him up?
Update: Even Sullivan wonders if this is the Worst Ad Ever. Lordy this one is a gift.

I just got EPU’d:
OT: On MSRNC Collette Cassidy just said that the House stripped William Jefferson of his chairmanship. Wasn’t it the House Democrats that stripped him? They made it sound like he was disciplined by the whole House. Fuckers.
NED!
Roots!
Thanks to all who asked.
I am still around, but I have been studying for something and will be for the next month or so. And that, combined with my work related responsibilities (which at the moment are untypically high in terms of what I have to spend time thinking about), means that my omnipresence at FDL will only be quasi-omnipresence for a while. But take heart, the omniscience will still be there.
late to the party–work, you know– but Josh Marshall has been all over this in a nice way. If you haven’t read his stuff today, it’s fun! Go on over.
Riesz Fischer 2 — MSRNC — I love that. I’m using it.
Al Gore!
An Inconvenient Truth opening at theatres in Columbus, Ohio, USA tonight. :-)
Riesz Fischer – picky, picky. You probably also don’t think it’s fair that they mentioned Jefferson’s a Democrat, while none of the reports about Governor Ryan’s conviction mentioned that he was a Republican.
And while you’re worrying about these trifling details, Mexican gays want to burn American flags at their wedding ceremonies! You really should get your priorities straight.
also EPUd : by a vote of the Democratic caucus, Jefferson’s Democratic seat on the Appropriations Committee was unappointed from him. This had to be officially and formally ratified by a vote of the entire House…
Thanks, *ilson. And thanks Jane, I’d be honored.
*ahem* Karl, let’s try again:
“Karl Rove and his minions have served as a way to mobilize hate and anger — hate and anger, first and foremost, at the Democratic Party and the people of this nation, but then also at people within their own party whom they consider to be less than completely loyal to this very narrow, very out-of-the-mainstream, very far Right-wing ideology that they tend to represent.”
Given the damage that’s occurred, I’m betting he’s being kept around for one last hurrah this fall during the elections, and then all of a sudden he’ll release a statement to the press saying that he “needs to spend more time with his family.”
Hey, Joe Lieberman — for voting Republican: BOOT TO THE HEAD!! http://www.webguys.com/pdavis/karate/tikwanleep.html

Elsewhere a commenter who said he knows Ned says Ned’s going to rip Holy Joe a new asshole in the debate.
Is the debate on the calendar? what’s the date?
I have to say that the “Yogi and BooBoo” ad is one of the worst political ads I’ve ever seen. The thing is so pathetic it’s almost painful to watch. It’s beyond laughable. One can only hope that Holy Joe makes a huge media buy and plays the thing on tv in CT 24/7 for the next eight weeks or so. The voters in CT will probably laugh Droopy right out of office.
oh jeebus, I’m gonna disagree with Peter Dauo – and I all but worship that mind
when I saw the Rove quote about blogs it’s was the best news I’d seen in a while. he was essentially acknowledging our potential as a political power and wanted to nip it in the bud
better yet, he saw a 1000 people in Vegas and as a ‘numbers guy’, realized how many of us there may be out here
I’m thinking ol Karl was envious of any assemblage of passionate folks who didn’t need the mega church bus to deliver the boots on the ground
now Peter is correct in his assessment of the Coulter situation, but I think we should be glad Karl actually started at the top by using “Hate” in his first volley – scawy, vewy scawy

another reason why I am not a monarchist:
Prince Victor Emmanuel, the son of Italy’s last king, has been arrested as part of an investigation into corruption and prostitution.
The 69-year-old was held in the northern Italian city of Lecco in connection with the recruitment of prostitutes for clients at a casino.
The prince’s family have vigorously denied the allegations.
Victor Emmanuel returned to Italy in 2003, 56 years after the House of Savoy went into exile.
So my congresscritter (Jefferson) has been kicked off Ways & Means. Not sure how this helps rebuilding the Gulf Coast, but I do believe Jefferson — his entire family, for that matter — is crooked, and there you have it. Thanks for nothing, Dollar Bill!
The House Democrats pass their resolution, but then the entire House has to vote. So it is indeed the case that the whole House voted on it — voice vote, no dissent, following recommendation of the Democrats.
Wonder what he’s saving his campaign cash for with that piece of shit ad…bet someone in the comments here could top that in about 15 minutes.
Must be some pro-bono work courtesy of the turdmuncher and his graduating sophomore class of the young reporklicans.
The Rovian playbook.
This is how its done:
1.As an elected official, select your absolute worst political/personal trait and/or liability. (Leiberman showing true colors as the Republican that he is.)
2. Publically denouce and shellac your opponent with your worst trait/liability over and over. It does not matter if you are totally lying. The more outrageous the better. Force your opponent to deny your accusation over and over, no matter how “1988″ your advertisement may be.
3. Repeat the accusation ad nauseum, you can frame the issue in the press into an endless “he said-no-he said” debate. Main thing, capture your opponent’s message and hose him with it
dailyhourly.4. Confuse, numb, and disgust the electorate with this bullshit in order to depress general voter turnout.
5. Rachet up your core voter/base emotion talking points. Doesn’t matter what you believe, just pander to your base. Easy, easy, easy, Gurney Joe…er, No Gay Joe…er, Warwhore Joe!!!
6. Win your election in spite of your personal truths or beliefs or voting history…or just rig a Diebold machine.
K O (Countdown) Time, I miss him, but Brian Unger isn’t half bad.2 US soldiers missing. Damn.
RevDeb 6 — I loved Marshall’s invitation for Democratic campaign people to confront their inner doofus with this ad. As Xeno (18) said, that is one of the worst things I’ve ever seen. I’ve seen better production values in first semester film school students. Nobody under the age of 50 is going to know what it means and it’s a temple to Joe’s own vanity.
I can tell you one thing about the Lamont people — they are extremely sharp and right on it. If they weren’t this thing wouldn’t be where it is right now. They’ve played Holy Joe and all his weaknesses like a violin. The idea that an 18 year incumbent can be beaten in a primary is still incredible, but if anyone can do it these people can. Thanks to Joe for giving them a leg up with this piece of amateur garbage.
Ned’s next ad: “Joe Lieberman: Bush’s favorite Democrat. Now endorsed by Bill O’Reilly!”
as one of the least politically savvy among us I’m wondering what the hell was Joe doing reminding the good people of Connecticut (24% Pres JAR) about Weicker ?
Jane 27,
What makes Josh’s posts that much better is that he doesn’t have a “dog” in the race, though Holy Joe is a dog indeed. He’s just reporting what people are sending him.
It gets better by the day. If we DON’T win this one . . . lots of tears and untold amount of anger at the DSCC!
Murtha GREAT yet again on Countdown. Boy has he emerged as an iconic figure on the war.

cbl 29 — I don’t know WHAT he’s thinking. A sequel to an 18 year-old ad, a tribute to a battle that is wholly irrelevant at the moment? It’s like Barbara Walters sitting down with some celebrity who presumes, in their vanity, that everyone watching is intimately knowledgable about every detail of their personal history. Eighteen years is a long fucking time, most people don’t remember longer ago than last week. I’m sure the ad is very meaningful to Joe but if they bothered to poll I would imagine most folks who even understood what it was about could give a rat’s ass.
I think Lieberman would be well represented by Droopy Dog, should Lamont ever decide to play at that level.

va bene? non c’e male?
God damn that ad is stupid.
Between this and the Byron York “what is this writing about things people are interested in” comment from earlier today, it’s pretty clear that the Beltway crowd has become so out of touch they don’t know how to communicate with ordinary people anymore. They really do think people are idiots. And that’s the vacuum that FDL and other blogs are filling …
EPU’d: Mary 264, pinky swear no socks.
Cujo, I couldn’t disagree more. Ohio election politics were warped in 2004, further warped in referenda questions in 2005 [on voting integrity issues] vastly different from the usually precise Columbus Dispatch polls. Issues that were projected to win by 2:1 LOST by 2:1. And in 2006 we have Blackwell as Sec of State supervising his OWN election for governor. Fair I’m sure.
I am from Ohio and keep in touch w lots of people there. Kerry was way ahead in the polls, returns were coming in consistent with this, and then suddenly in the middle of the night, there were new returns that were statistically impossible but yet said Bush won. Don’t believe me? Check out people who have analyzed statistics at the precinct level. Every anomaly, and there were MANY, strangely favored the Republicans.
I know lifelong Republicans who NEVER voted for a Democrat, who voted for Kerry in ‘04. This should have been a major victory for the Democrats, except for having a corrupt Republican Secretary of State. Well, you know, the party that did PHONE JAMMING in New Hampshire? Yeah. Um hmm.
RevDeb,
think about the folks who were sliming Keith this week – they couldn’t have waited until Monday so as to maximize their slime ??? – instead like the impetuous children they no doubt are, they shoot their wad while he’s on vacation – hey maybe they’re the ones doing Joe’s ad

Wow, Countdown really impressive tonight. They seem to be explicitly trying to be the anti-Fox News.
This was the best part of Rover’s speech:
“The Internet for the Left of the Democratic Party has served as a way to mobilize hate and anger …”
On one hand, at least he learned SOME grammar and said DEMOCRATIC rather than DEMOCRAT (party).
On the other hand, it is laughable that he still tries to say 75% of America is “Left of the Democratic Party.”
Can you say ROFL?
Gawd. Saturday morning Orwell.
1) To what common denominator is Lieberman playing? (I know… I don’t want to know.)
2) Lamont is too Republican???!!! Of course, as Paul Bass says, it’s “Karl Rove s strategy of taking your own weakness and turning it into your opponent’s weakness instead.” But the strategy never stops being galling. I have conservative friends whom I respect (and agree to disagree with.) They are decent human beings and straight shooters. “This is what I believe in, and here’s why.”
They aren’t lying sacks of shit.
Lieberman doesn’t even have the courage or decency to fight his opponent on the real issues. (Yes, I know, truth in campaign ads has been dead since 1980. Hell, long before that, but the lies never stop grating.)
3) It’s time for my Vodka and Prozac (a Stoly Soother.) Or at least a pencil between my teeth.

thank you god, for liberman’s stupidity!
egregious @ 5:16 pm (#37) – I’ll cop to not looking at this in detail, which at this point would be the only way of sorting out all the claims and counter claims. To me, the matter of whether Kerry won or not is largely irrelevent. People should look at what was provably done wrong and fix it. That should be enough work for people in Ohio and most states in this country.
I’ve been around enough to know that selective memory, anecdotal information taken as typical, and fanciful assumptions can account for all the “proof” I’ve seen thus far. Read my past coments on this matter. I’ve already answered this stuff more than I care to.
Miller was a jackass, and if he’s right he’s done himself a serious disservice, because I won’t take anything he says seriously unless I’ve been able to check it out or someone whose analytical abilities I’ve come to respect has checked it out. If someone wants to be taken as a crank, he can use Miller’s letter to Salon as a guide.
OT, well I’m leaving for week long vacation. I will be passing through Jackson Hole, Wyoming, so I’ll keep an eye out for turning Aspens. I’ll miss FDL! Keep up the fight against those damned dirty Republicans (and Lieberman).
GhostofAtwater?! Karl, you pissant, I wouldn’t let you hold my jock, you turdblossom!
So Hillary is pushing “Privacy Bill of Rights” but it is all about wiretapping etc. but no sign of personal privacy– choice, birth control, gay rights. But no, those have nothing to do with privacy, right?
Turley, “We already have an attorney general who is more general than attorney.”
Great quote.
Hey Karl, I ran your quote through my veracity filter, and look how it came out:
“Stick this in your trophy case, Warden.”
(Thanks to Cujo359 for the formatting tips!)
Paul Bass writes for the New Haven Independent which I don’t believe is associated in any way with the Hartford Courant. Inasmuch as the goal is to pry journalism from corporate rule I don’t think Bass would want involvement from the Tribune people.
For those hoping that Connecticut voters will see the light I should point out that they elected John Rowland three times. It was only with his second reelection that the former Governor met his maker, of sorts, was prosecuted, convicted and jailed for corruption.
2) Lamont is too Republican???!!! Of course, as Paul Bass says, it’s “Karl Rove s strategy of taking your own weakness and turning it into your opponent’s weakness instead.” But the strategy never stops being galling.
God, ain’t that the truth? It makes me foam at the mouth, sometimes. My eyeballs start to bleed. I start looking around for sharp, heavy objects to throw.
Pundits need to start throwing this right back in their faces. Reframe the argument, create a new narrative, a TRUE narrative.
On the other hand, I can’t think of any better incentive to get people off the fence and away from the DINO mentality than for Karl Rove to endorse it. Can you? Put the kettle on, somebody. It looks like we’re going to have company.
Jesus God, this is pathetic.
So, Lieberman’s attacks are going to be on the level where they could be responded to by saying:
“I know you are, but what am I,” or “I’m rubber, you’re glue; whatever you say bounces off me and sticks to you?”
I’d do the oh-so-mature raspberry that usually follow these taunts, but I don’t know how I would spell it.
Lamont is going to wipe the floor with Lieberbaby and use Rove for a rag to do it.
The Hartford Courant has another article about the ad: http://www.courant.com/news/po…..tics-state
==Lamont Tagged By `Bear’ Spot
Lieberman Campaign Portrays Challenger As Agent Of Weicker
[] It was posted Thursday afternoon on Lieberman’s campaign Web page, a tool unavailable 18 years ago. A copy also was e-mailed, according to his campaign manager, Sean Smith, to selected supporters.
The spot offers a new rationale for Lamont’s challenge: It’s not about Lieberman’s support for the war in Iraq; it’s about avenging Weicker’s loss 18 years ago.
[] Weicker, who bounced back from his Senate loss to be elected governor as an independent in 1990, said picking a fight with someone other than your opponent always is a sign of a campaign in trouble…..
I’d do the oh-so-mature raspberry that usually follow these taunts, but I don’t know how I would spell it.

Okay, now I remember –
Consultants tell candidates to call their opponents “My Opponent” because they want voters to remember your name in the voting booth — not your opponents.
Spend you scarce resources building your own name recognition — not your opponents.
For Ned, no big deal — everyone knows his opponent’s name.
For Weepin’ Joe — both feet, blown to hell.
Josh at TPM nailed it when he said that Lieberman is losing his dignity as well as “his” Senate seat.
BobbyG, your righteous anger is just that: righteous!
ck @ 86
The idea behind never mentioning your opponent’s name has to do with giving them free publicity and boosting their name recognition.
But Joe’s problem is that it’s not like no one knows Ned around CT these days. Among Joe’s problems is that he’s seen as out of touch, so if he doesn’t mention Ned, it just looks like he’s so clueless he doesn’t know who he’s running against.
That rule only makes sense if you are the incumbent, but not the challenger. Especially if the incumbent is the former VP nominee of the party. I’d say Wholely Joe’s probably got a pretty good name recognition factor.
Of course, from where Joe’s ratings appear to be going, that might not be a good thing. In fact, I’d say Ned’s going to mention Lieberman’s name a lot, and every time Ned’s going to follow it with Dubya’s.

US ‘unprepared for catastrophes’
Many cities and states in the US are not prepared for a major disaster, a new report has warned.
Washington, a target in the 9/11 attacks, was among the worst-prepared for a catastrophe, the Department of Homeland Security report said.
Louisiana and the city of New Orleans, which were devastated by Hurricane Katrina last year, also scored low.
The best-prepared states include Florida and other coastal states which are hurricane-prone.
The six-month study, conducted in all 56 US states and territories and 75 of the largest cities, looked at nearly 2,800 emergency operations plans.
That ad is insane. It reminds me of those weird parodies of HR Pufnstuf that they used to do on Mr. Show. But this is weirder. It’s also a terrible commercial, my main reason for thinking Rove wasn’t involved. It’s hard to imagine him vetting this. It’s easy to imagine a half-mad Lieberman, deep in his bunker, thinking this is a good idea.

Inquiry Finds Use of Abusive Interrogation Techniques in Iraq
By ERIC SCHMITT
WASHINGTON, June 16 — American Special Operations soldiers employed a set of harsh, unauthorized interrogation techniques against detainees in Iraq during a four-month period in early 2004, long after approval for their use was rescinded, according to a Pentagon inquiry released today.
The investigation is the last of 12 major inquiries to be made public in reviewing allegations of detainee abuse by American personnel in Cuba, Afghanistan and Iraq,, and it is the first to focus on Special Operations forces, who operate with more latitude than other military units. It detailed harsh treatment that continued at isolated operations bases even after the abuses first surfaced at the Abu Ghraib prison.
News flash, DSCC retrieves head from nether regions and actually does something positive:
The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has just announced that Virginia will be their eighth targeted Senate seat this year and pundits across the country agree that Jim Webb is a real threat to George Allen.
Like we been sayin’, Webb can defeat Allen. [This race wasn’t even on anybody’s radar two months ago. Go roots!]
Ya no thanks to you national guys who jumped in only in the last WEEK before the primary. This isn’t a Hackett job, they just realized we were gonna win BIG and they wanted some reflected roots glory :)
*ilson, having personally attended a couple of evacuation planning meetings for the New Orleans area, I can assure you that our low score is well deserved. Nobody is really in charge of this mess, and many of the people involved in the planning process are unbelievably clueless. Memo to everyone else in Southeast Louisiana: we save ourselves. If you have elderly or mobility-impaired neighbors, please check on them and include them in your evacuation plans. If you have somewhere you can go, take someone with you who has nowhere else. And bring their pets, too. No empty seats. Nobody gets left, nobody forgotten. And for those who want to “ride it out” because it’s “only” a Cat 2: dude, you are livin’ in a freakin’ trailer that the Big Bad Wolf could take out after smoking six packs of Gauloises. LEAVE.
So, let me get this straight – the point of the add is that (1)Lamont agrees with the republicans 80% of the time and (2)Lamont wants to vote for Lieberman.
Did Lieberman just release an add claiming that he’s really, deep down, basically a republican? Because Democrats and Republicans don’t agree that often – sometimes, sure, but not 80% of the time.
Go get ‘em egregious.
Turley’s quote “We already have an attorney general who is more general than attorney.”
Says it all.

What this ad suggests is that Lieberman is not only the most obtuse narcissist but that he is surrounded by an army of yes men who could not see that this ad was pure excrement and scream at him to stop. Lieberman seems to think that some ad of Lieberman’s from 18 years ago in a highly transient-population state means everything to the voters because of course it is JOE, and what JOE has ever said is what matters, to EVERYONE. It’s HIS SEAT, the voters are just there to provide almighty JOE what he wants. How insufferably arrogant. What a prissy prick.
I do not like Lieberman but I have to assume that he has an inner circle that has a few connected-to-reality people. Oh, wait, in light of this electronic turd of an ad, I guess I don’t have to make that benefit of the doubt assumption.
So many mistakes. On top of the inanity of the ad, it puts Lamont on the same visual level as Joe with the all-caps, red-white-and-blue patriotic sign that says …. “LAMONT” – giving Ned free advertising. You NEVER increase your opponent’s name recog in your ads unless you have no choice, but NEVER in big caps in the colors of the flag. If at all, it should have been in miniscule type against baby-shit green or beige, something vague and hard to see. Lamont is the challenger, do not increase his name recognition.
I actually am closer to Joe than Ned on a few issues but I hope that Ned cleans his clock. Joe is certainly doing everything to help Ned. Ned should list this ad on Ned’s campaign finance forms as an inkind donation – from Joe to Ned’s efforts to win.
“Since Holy Joe seems to be channeling the ghost of Lee Atwater of late”
I thought it was more Hanna-Barbera.
The ad’s theme works because Lieberman is turning into a cartoon character akin to Elmer Fudd, “where is that wascally Ned Wamont and why does he want my job?”
This is only going in one direction, win or lose, Lieberman is officially a Republican after November.

So is Lamont running TV ads?
I am a HUGE fan of Hilsman. I have sen his work in action here in Minnesota–Paul Wellstone, Jesse Ventura–and it has been brilliant. If he is up against sub-par political advertising, Lieberman is toast.
Good work, BobbyG…’Four chords and the truth.’
It’s like a Charmin ad gone wrong. When are those bears gonna start dancing around and rubbing tissue paper on their bums?
Imho this is an excellent ad for Ned Lamont. I reminds the voters of five important points:
1. Lieberman is a man of the past. He doesn’t have any new ideas, his ‘new’ ad looks like it’s still 1988.
2. Lowell Weicker, ex-Senator, ex-Governor of Connecticut, endorses Lamont. If a former republican who turned independent holds Lamont in high esteem, this should make Ned even more interesting for moderate conservatives and independents.
3. Ned Lamont voted republican 80% of the time? Hmm, conservatives may wonder why they should vote Lieberman if Lamont seems to have some love for the right, too.
4. Is Lieberman obsessed with bear stories? Everybody knows that he loves bear hugs, too, his pictures with Bush are ample evidence.
5. This should be a campaign about a Connecticut, what do bears have to do with that? Bears are the symbols of Finland, West Virginia and California. The state animal of Connecticut is the sperm whale. Maybe Lieberman is spending too much time outside the state so that he can’t remember that. Or is he becoming senile?
Waay late to the thread. The thing that I get a charge out of is that the Lamont campaign is actually telling us supporters to study Lieberman’s attack ads. (Especially if you have a morbid fascination with political campaigns that are spending major bucks and doing nothing right). I doubt the Lieberman camp is returning the favor.
The silly thing is that Weicker is fairly highly regarded by Dems because he made the taxation system more fair by introducing an income tax. What resentment exists about
Weicker is on the Republican side, among the Barbara Bush species of Republicans.
Recall the bear stomping around in the 1984 Reagan ads, representing the Soviet Union. Is this where the political genius who made this ad got the inspiration?
If you really want Lieberman out you should link to the video on his website – they might think it’s a success if it gets a lot of hits!
“What resentment exists about
Weicker is on the Republican side, among the Barbara Bush species of Republicans.”
Is that so? And do you think it’s a mistake o target Weicker and not a deliberate effort to reach out to the Bush voters? Maybe Joe has already decided to run as an independent and try to appeal to hardcore republicans.
I’m sure that everyone’s seen this Kos diary, but I can bear-ly contain my guffaws – The Hibernating Americans speak out-

“Coalition of Bears Reacts to Lieberman Ad”
Oh man, you want a Lamont response ad?
Lamont comes on and says “You know, we were trying to come up with an ad that made Joe Lieberman look like a childish jerk with a giant sense of entitlement and no real issues. And then Joe went and did it for us.” And then Joe’s silly cartoon runs, including that e’er so important bit at the end, ‘I’m Joe Lieberman, and I approved this message’. And then Lamont looks and says “Sad, isn’t it? Come on, Joe, it’s time to go.”
