I understand that bidding starts at one full day of uninterrupted electricity.
Personally, I would have gone with a simpler black frame with subtle off-white matting to better highlight his complexion. Since when did we start trafficking in snuff art? — Watertiger, who is positive that WordPress is trying to ruin her reputation with the FDL community. Not that she’s paranoid.

watertiger! you’ve overcome technology’s slings and arrows!
Watertiger!
Blergh.
Norman Rockwell !
Viva la Reddhead, Jane & Fitz!
Hey TRex- was this Watertiger’s post, or did you do a pronto fill in? I sent you email very recently re: WP problem, so please check.
Valley Girl,
c’est moi. TRex was kind enough to lend me a key until I can get a replacement.
Yay, Watertiger!
I can’t seem to change the authorial attribution on my controls, though. Hrrrrrmmm.
Well, at least we got it posted. We may be the FDL B-team, but we still kick much booty.
Just because you’re paranoid, it doesn’t mean they’re not out to get you.
Sometimes, paranoia’s just good thinking.
And besides, who else would post something in such poor taste?
This just burns me up.
Trafficking in snuff art is precisely what it is– perfectly captioned as usual, watertiger.
We get our sensibilities offended when anyone does this to ours. Can’t even see the coffins of our war dead.
For shame.
Well, Cheney shows off his trophy birds that he kills (and lawyers), W. does the same with the fish and perch he catches. Condi shows off her Ferragamos, etc.
I find it really interesting how they’re playing this whole thing down, although judging from some of the photos of Bush today, he looked like he soooo wanted to yell, “Bring ‘em on!”
I fixed the byline so it says watertiger. Thanks TRex for helping out!
I think it’s a Photoshopped picture of Uday Hussein. Abu Musab al Zarqawi never existed. They invented him from whole cloth and then decided to declare him dead when their gay-bashing amendment tanked.
That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.
Junior needs something to hang next to Saddam’s cap pistol…
watertiger~
It’s you!! It’s so very you!!
This is a terrible picture for the US military.
Moussaui is HUGE and completely overpowers the soldier. The soldier, meanwhile, looks completely awkward and has a “Now where the hell am I going to put this?” look on his face.
Not a victory photo.
Watertiger: You’re the best. Really.
I couldnt find on Google Images the bloody color photo of dead Zarqawi with cuts and bruises and blood…CNN ran it a few times …
I don’t understand how there is more than smear left of anyone after two 500 pound bombs have been dropped on his head.
I’ll bet Dumbya will hang one of these in his den.
Thanks Pach!
I am sure Michael as BagNewsNote will cover it.. but tell me that doesnt remind you of the dead pictures of Che’
CNN did a story also comparing it to the pix of Che … startling similarity …
Yes, the framing is an odd touch. Personally, I’d have gone modern — maybe the edgy black film frame that worked so well in Avedon’s New Yorker photos. It would have added that documentary feel.
But gold is archival, so apparently we’re playing to history here.
The guy was a murderer and a thug. He deserves no noteriety whatsoever, particularly decorating someone’s living room.
Not that I’d choose that picture for my place under any circumstances …
Bionic,
you mean maybe they had him on ice and decided to trot out the body when the U.S. stock market needed resuscitation?
[pushes aluminum hat back on head]
Ehren!
Hey TRex- has your mod com problem now been fixed?
talk about framing an issue. damn…
And thank you, Pach! As I told TRex, the FDL readers makes certain guest posters feel a little less awkward about their utter spazziness.
Someday, I’ll figure those text boxes out.
Oh, come on. They HAD to frame it. It’s going to go up in Bush’s Victory in Iraq Museum, right next to the pictures of U-day and Qu-say. Regrettably, there STILL won’t be any Eapons-way of Ass-may Estruction-day.
It is as though the military is trying to teach a course in how best to turn a dead man into a martyr for millions.
Step 1: Hold a news conference where you display a photograph of the dead man’s face, magnified 3 times larger than life, against a billowy cloudlike white towel, with white matting and a shiny golden gilt-style frame.
And don’t forget to make sure there are plenty of people around near the photograph so that the audience can compare the larger scale of the man in the picture with them.
Usually the one thing that the Bush administration gets right is stagecraft. In this case, they got it dead wrong.
Vintage H2O Tigre!
I have to say I am not entirely convinced about this whole story (and I don’t think one has to sport tin for this one), but I am disgusted that an obviously dead person’s picture is being marketed and used this way.
Basking in the glory of our success with the MSM so desperately wanting to run with it and beat it silly and the administration and others being very, very cool about the whole thing. Kinda weird seeing the admin putting the kibosh on their cheerleaders, isn’t it?
Mary, OT from last thread (such as it was, given the posting problems today . . .)
Love your weaving together the strands of the whole Abramoff/Safavian mess, and don’t worry about there being no keys for the key ring. As I understand it, their soon-to-be-new landlords don’t allow them to HAVE keys to their soon-to-be-new digs.
Pastafarians! Jah Mon!!!

It doesn’t look like it, VG. It’s giving me the same message it was last night.

The thing that gets me is these thoughts come into my head even when I am nowhere near any aluminum foil.
Let me think of how many things have been pushed out of the media story today…
As for the tin-foil hat wearers, I don’t see this as a staged event. I think they really did get him (The 4th time’s the charm!), because if they were going to fake something like this, they’d go for bin Laden and then claim that any future videos were fakes. It’s not like he can show up on “The Today Show” to prove he’s still alive.
I had the misfortune to watch the first few minutes of Scarborough Country tonight, and he had both Biden and McCain on to comment.
Biden started his usual stump speech and all I heard was that “Peanuts” adult voice – although he did say that this incident gives the Iraqis another six months to get their act together. Another corner to turn.
McCain likened Zarqawi to one of “Hitler’s people.”
This is our leadership?
Displaying a photograph of enemy dead is against the Geneva Conventions.
This is grotesque and evil.
Peterr @ 7:38 pm (#36) – I think all of Bush’s true acheivements will be pictures like this. Ought to take up one wall of the museum, I suppose. That and an empty glass case for all the good we got out of Iraq.
I ‘m not saying he isn’t dead, Frank, I just wonder how cold the body actually was when they photographed it.
After all, who is going to come forward and say “Hey! We told them to bomb over there! not over here.”
Can you name anyone foolish enough to step forward and say they fingered him to the US?
Hastening to add, I don’t refer to firedoglake republishing the photo, but the government’s wide distribution and gloating.
egregious,
this administration has ignored every other principle set out in the Geneva Conventions; why not this one?
egregious @41
Grotesque? Yes.
Evil. Yes.
Against the Geneva Conventions? But those don’t matter any more, right?
That, IMHO, makes this even worse.
I know I felt better when I paid $3.27 a gallon for gas today. Looked up into the grey, rain filled skies and thanked the heavens that…
Oh and that Haditha thing and all the other accusations, no problem. It was all Zarqawi’s fault anyway.
Yeah, Bionic– wonder if the lottery winner is going to step right up to the plate to gather his 25 million… NOT. He’s probably already on ice too. sigh.
TRex- well that’s a pisser. Sorry I didn’t see your comment here before I sent you recent email. I doubt that I can do anything, but I will poke around.
found the bloody photo – not for the squeamish! http://us.news3.yimg.com/us.i2…..MZw–
The Geneva Conventions used to be considered almost a sacred document here. Now the Pentagon is trying to exclude it from the army manual.
Yay beacon of freedom.
I work overseas in a formerly totalitarian country. I USED to be proud to represent a free and democratic nation.
Oops. CNN and the AP are already running “Where’s Osama?” stories. Honeymoon’s over.
Cujo @ 42
On the opposite wall, a nice aerial panorama shot of New Orleans, circa September 2, 2005, and some appropriate memorabilia like part of Trent Lott’s old porch. Playing over the speaker system in that part of the museum would be the Blind Boys of Alabama, singing “Amazing Grace” to the tune “House of the Rising Son.
(Stunning, absolutely stunning music, BTW)
I refer you to Mary’s comment about the Pentagon moral standards being made on an etch-a-sketch.
Remind me again: Which party is the party of death?
I’m not getting any feed on Air America streaming from YearlyKos. It should have started by now; anyone else???

I just finished the Atlantic article by Mary Anne Weaver (yea for the Mary Ann’s). One of the best articles I have read, not only about today’s news, but the entire ‘war on terror’ ….

Surely by now you’ve figured out that there is no Geneva Convention in the War on Terra’. That charming old document is currently lining the bottom of Abu Gonzales’s bird cage.
Watertiger is in the house! Now we can start the lakeside party.
Frank, I was just going to say that. Which indeed ..is the party of death. The way to put this country back together is not to stoop to the Repugs level or the level of anyone who would laugh at the death of anyone. And Frank, I’m Andy’s mom. Suzanne :) Are you who I think you are? :)
This photo of a dead man reminds me of David Lindsey’s book “Heat from Another Sun”

. . . and I work domestically, in a formerly democratic country.
Frank Probst @ 7:49 pm (#51) – Odd part is, it really doesn’t matter any more. Al Zarqawi, Bin Laden, we could get all the guys we’ve actually heard of and it probably wouldn’t make much difference, There’d be new ones in a year or two. The basic cause of that movement, the madrassas, the lack of democracy, and (now) anger at what’s happening in Iraq will continue on.
There I am, stating the obvious again.
This photo reminds me of the ones that were taken in Abu Graib. Zarqawi (who was losing followers in Iraq recently – see Juan Cole) in death will become a poster child for martydom. Did some think-tank in a secret bunker decide that the news of the rest of the worlds’ stock markets significant decline yesterday just had to be made ignorable? Is this the reason for such a stupid PR move re Zarqawi? By the way, the rest of the world seems to be freaking out over the US’s desperate economic situation.

For those who can’t remember all the turning points in Iraq, here’s my list, updated of course.
1. May 1, 2003 End of major combat operations announced on board the aircraft carrier USS Lincoln: Mission accomplished
2. July 22, 2003 Saddam Hussein’s sons Uday and Qusai killed
3. December 13, 2003 Saddam Hussein captured
4. March 8, 2004 Interim Constitution
5. June 28, 2004 Interim government/Sovereignty returned
6. November 2004 Second siege of Fallujah
7. January 30, 2005 First elections for transitional assembly
8. May 3, 2005 Transitional government formed
9. October 15, 2005 Vote on constitution
10. December 15, 2005 Elections for permanent assembly
11. April 22, 2006 Jawad al Maliki replaces interim PM Ibrahim Jaafari in forming a permanent government
12. May 20, 2006 al Maliki presents permanent government: Defense, Interior, and National Security Ministries left unfilled
13. June 7, 2006 Jihadist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi killed; June 8, 2006 last ministries filled in permanent government (175 days after the elections)
Alternate: October 19, 2005 Saddam Hussein’s trial begins
1,175 DAYS AND THE KILLING GOES ON AND ON AND…
Let’s keep our eyes on the real stuff goin’ on here folks…the purpose of marketing the picture and makin’ al Zarkawi a martyr is to insure perpetual insurgency and push the “terrorists” further into the 12th century. Meanwhile, the “death of the net” jest passed the House of Representatives…a bit of irony as the Yearly Kos party is blastin off and the day after progressives fired the first shot in the ‘06 election war. And the Bleumenthal story of Old George losin’ the battle for control of the Chimp and the public slapdown of Arlen Spectator by Darth Cheney slides by the corporate shills while everyone is fixated on the picture of a dead body.
I’m sorry if I can’t get all jacked up over the bread and circus in Las Vegas…we jest lost the battle for our democracy folks.
KEEP THE FAITH AND GO DOWN FIGHTIN’!!!
Displaying a photograph of enemy dead is against the Geneva Conventions.

Cujo-
Something ghastly about the times we live in is that you apparently can’t say the obvious often enough. The other side is furiously arguing that black is white, up is down, war is peace, and freedom is slavery. So, by all means, state the obvious. It’s apparently not so obvious anymore.
Frank Probst @ 7:55 pm (#61) – When he said that, did anyone ask Imus who would really be in charge?
At last the American public can revel in the fact someone else has also been framed.Angie? I wonder what Iraqi citizens think of such a display?
Hey, meta!

I’m no Bill Frist, so I can’t make a hard diagnosis just by looking at the video, but I would guess that Cheney has what’s known as multi-infarct dementia. That’s when someone with horrible artery disease–the kind that gives you multiple heart attacks–suffers a series of small strokes over a period of time. That fits with what all of Poppy Bush’s people saying about Cheney being a completely different man than he was 15 years ago.

I’ve wondered that too, Eureka. They showed us a few men looking happy and said there were celebratons in the streets down south. I just remember reading from Riverbend and other Iraqis that they never really believed in him or his power. I cannot think that the average Iraqi feels very good at all any time, any day– today being no exception. They are still under occupation and continuous peril. My guess is that they feel ashamed for us and still hopeless. The bombs still go off– at least 31 Iraqis died today despite this.

Frank Probst,
While Cheney is a vasculopath, the paranoia and delusions aside, I think he is just a barnyard sociopath. Also with a multi infarct pattern over so long a period you might expect motor deficits to accumulate as well and for there to be a progressive episodic deterioration. Personally, I think he is the walking posterboy for the banality of evil.

You left out “ignorance is strength,” which I think is the real key to GWB’s philosophy, if not that of the Republican party as a whole.
It amazes me that no one even blinks at the shocking un-American-ness of such phrases as “new world order,” “shock and awe,” and the nasty snuff-pornography of images like the one at the head of this post. (Well, no one but us, that is — the angry left.)
How, exactly, is this any different, except in degree, from al-Zarqawi’s own videos of beheadings? What a coarse, sad place our country has become, at least the parts of it that make the news.
William Timberman……
Spot on…
*ilson 23 didn’t one of Goss’ CIA buddies, Felix something-or-other, shoot Che?
ende at 8:39 pm –
Felix Rodriguez?
If it wasn’t him, it was definitely another one of the Operation 40 Cubans — of Bay of Pigs, JFK, and Watergate fame.
I was not so upset with the idea of the Army showing photographs as I drove to work today. Basically, my thinking was this will backfire against the administration as in doing so they are obviously violating the law of nations (or at least protocols.) My thinking continued with the hope that in doing so they will personalize the war and put things in perspective for the average American. All day I avoided articles, links and other media that would possibly show an actual photo and I was quite frankly surprised to see it here.
Now, I think if you took a picture of every Iraqi that was killed since we invaded in search of Osama (or whatever) and made them to the same scale and then lined them up end to end you could actually circle the world 19 and a half times.
In other words that is one hell of a big picture or a really “teeny-weeny” soldier. It certainly puts it in perspective for me.
William Timberman, exactly. It sickens me to watch a country with the possibility of greatness become such a horror show.
Well, the latest corners Iraq has turned are the four corners of this frame. I didn’t know they had an Aaron Brothers or a Fast Frame in Iraq–or is Haliburton in the picture framing business?
It usually takes two weeks to get a photo and frame like that–could the guy have been dead for some time and then–conveniently–the news comes out after the primary elections and the gay marrige debate?
Angie: “At least 31 Iraqis have died today….”
Spot on. As Steve Gilliard says at The Newsblog, bush’s fig-leaf for obscuring the reality of Iraq, is now gone. Who’s the new bogeman gonna be?
No more bullshit about Al Queada being responsible for all the violence…their leader is toast, and let’s see how much the insurgents miss him.
(Especially, since, again from Gilliard, it was probably pissed-off Sunnis who gave him up.)
Shazam– well said ;(
tanbark– the curtain falls away more and more, day by day.
FitzFan @ 9:31 pm (#117) – I wouldn’t be surprised if they have a Kinko’s over there, or an equivalent at the PX. Probably took a couple of hours. Some of the bigger unit headquarters will probably have big printers, also.
Yeah, Cujo– they probably shipped those printers pronto right along with shock and awe– gotta get that propaganda going asap.
Way EPU’d – but watertiger, you are the best. You wring every drop out of that “one picture” thing and then use a few words, not “added” on, but as multipliers.
Peterr – I hope you are right. It boggles the mind a bit to think that Martha Stewart has served time and Karl Rove hasn’t.
Even more EPU’d, but William Timberman – absolutely. Thanks for saying it. I think TRex is right – the obvious needs restating more often these days.
angie @ 9:45 pm (#121) – Not just for propoganda. They normally use maps wall-sized maps to keep track of what’s going on and to plan operations. They used to have D and E size plotters for drawing overlays, etc. Now I suspect they have laser and paintjet printers for that purpose.
Cujo359 @ 10:32 pm (#124) – Change my last to say “They normally use wall-sized maps”.
Pretty dead here. Guess everyone’s out having fun. Later, then.
On second thought (115) the photo could be a fake. Anyone out there think this is “a Shiavo” that someone painted a beard on? Sure looks like a possibility to me.
Would explain the propoganda angle and how come they have such a big photo laying around.
The comments here, after the exhibition of Saddam’s sons’ bodies are still appropriate. If the Iraqis show photos of war dead it is against the Geneva Conventions and all hell breaks loose, but if we do it, it is moral and right? What difference does this photo have from a head on a pike or any other barbaric act?
http://www.wsws.org/articles/2…..-j26.shtml
Whether Zarqawi really lived or really died isn’t going to affect the disaster which is erupting in the Middle East. It isn’t going to affect Bush’s poll numbers or the stock market… so why now?

And besides, who else would post something in such poor taste?
You know who would…and did.
Enough with the photo of the dead Zarqawi!
I half expect to see the soldiers engage in a steamy circle jerk, spewing their man juice on his image.
It’s ghoulish; he’s dead; job well done; you got your trophy, but stop with the picture of the head missing the body of the dead Zarqawi.
Jesus Christ! It’s like FoxNews is doing photo-ops of the dead Pope! Or, the second coming, only with JDAM bruises.
I think bushCo might just have him freeze-dried and mounted on the fucking white house lawn, with a pulsating neon sigh, saying:
“Looky here! Mission Accomplished!”
And, as one realist of a conservative said on my bluegrass site:
“Good. Can we go home now?”
But, I like Tiger’s comment about opening the bidding for the portrait, at one day’s worth of uninterrupted electricity.
Or, maybe they can just give copies of it, as consolation prizes to the relatives of the women and children that the marines slaughtered in Haditha.
If we can have a bigger than lifesize picture of a dead man’s face, why can’t I have a printout of my vote on election day?
Even Pravda has the pic up on nytimes.com this morning. E.N.O.U.G.H!
That’s the very best job of framing a picture of a corpse that I have ever seen.
Have they made enough copies for all the psychos in the administration that are going to want one?
Looks pretty good for getting hit with two 500 pound bombs.
At least he wasn’t tortured, beaten, killed and then posed.
Yeah, Sharon, wasn’t the frame cool?
If you go on a white house tour, will that be hanging beside…say…Richard Nixon? :o)
The real vote-getter would be live video of junior, fondling Saddam’s pistol and, as the wheels come off in Iraq, mumbling to himself:
“Freedom…liberation…Bechtel stock portfolios…”
Gee, not only did they have time to frame it, they also matted it.
Okay, does anybody else see what I see here? We’re told two 500 pound bombs were dropped on this guy, the house where he was bombed is a pile of rubble — and Zarqawi is totally unmarked except for a wound that conveniently does nothing to obscure his face! We in the movie business do this all the time — with makeup. I fail to see how it could have happened in real life. He should have been blown to pieces or crushed, yet Zarqawi is camera-ready. SOMETHING STINKS HERE!
Technically, the dissemination of photos like this is a violation of the Geneva Convention.
PointedHead- others have made this point. I’m not sure if you are referring to the first instance of this photo being published, or its posting here. In any event, as a moderator, I will bring this issue to the attention of JH and Pach, once they get back and are unwound from YK stuff. It’s hard for them to be in many places at once. Thanks.
A few thoughts on Al the Zarc,
Does any one out there recall ever hearing a definitive answer to the question of whether or not this jordanian fellow was actually killed in the bombing of northern Iraq in early ‘03 ??
If, as I suspect, not—-how about asking that the trophy-corpse in question be examined by a reputable, disinterested (non-military) lab in order to settle it’s authenticity. Seems reasonable considering how much we the people have paid for it.
I’ve been thinking that Al was on ice for a least a couple of years and was a little suprised he hadn’t popped up sooner. Karl must be really worried about something. By the way watch for the Osama-sicle wagon come October.
I might have let this thing slide, though I was mildly annoyed by the gullibility of you all. But when I heard a while ago that big Al had muttered something in a foreign tongue then turned away and died that did it.
The classic grammar school gratuitous lie to cover a weak part of the story that everyone except the liar had apparently forgotten was just too BushRove to let pass unappreciated.
So, anyway, why not put him back on ice and take him to Antiques Roadshow; let them settle the provenance. Goodnight.
Nation, I’d put nothing past the petro-turds, but I think it’s him.
Imagine the embarrassment, if we got another video of him along about the 4th of July.
But, just like I asked some conservative pals:
“You guys want to put up ANOTHER “mission accomplished” sign for this? :o)
Yeah it’s probably him. How when and where he died might be uncertain though. Seems to me that if they’ve felt it neccessary to provide an eyewitness already they might as well throw in some unimpeachable forensic evidence as well.
The art market’s through the roof right now; but still two hundred billion for that piece, I don’t know: I think I’d rather have the portrait of Dora Marr. Or something by Man Ray.
I couldn’t believe Ann Coulter’s remarks. Protocol requires at funerals that nice things be said of the deceased. I saw her at one of C-Span’s sites where she said she gets up and starts writing in her pj’s.
Obviously she didn’t listen to the conversation between the former Solicitor General and his wife. As we all know now she was on the flight that crashed in the fields of Pennsylvania. She told her husband what was happening. How can Coulter summarily dismiss these tear jerking goodbyes. In fact she was on C-Span a few months before; her husband was asked by C-Span to come on to discuss the 911 attack. They even cited that they have her signature in their guest book. I was so shocked that he was able to keep his composure while answering all those questions from both the moderator and C-Span’s audience on the Washington Journal.
What about that conversation between the hero of that flight who united everone and yelled out,’… let,s roll’. Does Coulter think these couples were on the verge of a divorce?
Now we know that that skiny gold headed lady has no class, and compassion. If it hadn’t been for the 911 families, viz.: wives, husbands, sons, daughters, etc. we would never had a 911 Commission. It’s obvious she didn’t do the research to listen to all those calls both from the Towers, and the planes.
Leisure Guy was right!
