Brent Budowsky is guest blogging for Steve Clemons at The Washington Note, and a reader sent me a link to one of his articles, saying "Read this." After reading the whole thing, I’m feeling a lot more energized, and I wanted to share a couple of bits with everyone else. Maybe it’s just that I’ve gotten more than one cup of coffee into my system — but this reads like a manifesto for all of us among the disaffected and disgusted, regardless of party affiliation or philosophical credo.
…It has been said that Karl Rove is "Bush’s Brain". The more important question is: Who is Bush’s conscience? With half of America in a state of total outrage, with independent America turning in 80% numbers against the status quo and with growing unrest among conservatives, what is the Bush-Rove response? Well, its their old standby, lets demonize the gays!…
Think about this: America is engaged in a great battle of ideas against an enemy that murders children in houses of worship and cuts off the heads of the innocent, and our leaders have failed to win this battle even against an enemy so hideously evil.
And what is the response of Bush and Rove? When they are not demonizing the gays, they are waving the flag, preparing to challenge the patriotism of political opponents who prefer supporting those who wear that flag on their shoulder to using the flag as a partisan weapon in the endless political wars that will be the sad legacy of those who never learned that we are, indeed, in this together.
The reason America stands on the brink of an epic election is that this President, his party, and his apologist[s] have let loose dark forces of division and dishonor that have divided our country, alienated much of decent opinion around the world, hurt our military, abused our freedoms in the name of a politics of fear and let loose in the land a kind of politics that violates the cardinal rules of two hundred years of the American family.
In this dark and demeaning vision of political war, anything goes, to win. A heroic Senator who will spend his life in a wheelchair as the price of his heroism is slandered by a guy who never served. A recipient of the bronze and silver stars is smeared because he is in the wrong political party. A Marine Corps hero who is one of strongest supporters of the troops who ever served in Congress is called a coward on the Floor of Congress. A Chief of Staff of the Army is demeaned by ideologues and partisans who were hell bent for a war they knew nothing about.
Six courageous retired Generals speak out with conscience and the editorial page of the Washington Times prints the statute on sedition. The cable talkies run segments with titles such as Hollywood Hates America. When the topic shifts to the atrocity of Haditha one of America’s leading right wing mouthpieces says these things always happen in way and cites, shame, shame, shame, shame and infamy to him, the Marines who took Iwo Jima and the Army heroes who took Normandy with the slander that they too committed acts that were comparable to Haditha. Who in the hell do these bums think they are?
The man who sits where Washington sat, where Jefferson sat, where Lincoln sat, claims he has the unilateral, inherent power to abrogate even the Bill of Rights The man who put his hand on the Bible with the trust that the laws are faithfully executed claims he has the unilateral, inherent power to violate the laws of the land at his personal whim, and at this writing, there are more than 700 laws that he asserts the right to violate today. The man entrusted with the legacy of Founding Fathers who were among the greatest and most timeless visionaries who ever walked the earth, claims he can operate beyond the reach of courts, beyond the reach of Congress, without the knowledge of the American people.
Here is our answer to this litany of outages. The Founding Fathers were right: they knew America, this land we love, this land we share, the land of freedom and democracy was based on timeless truths that were so brilliant and profound because they were so simple and so right.
We Americans are all part of a great family, coming together from different backgrounds, with different viewpoints. Washington, Madison, Jefferson, Franklin and the others knew that in our America, we begin with an attitude of mutual respect, shared patriotism, a willingness to put our little differences aside to stand together for the more important things that constitute our common trust. Then, the Founders created institutions that were built from that attitude of shared Americanism, separation of powers, divided government, a free press based on the right to know and on the judgment that an informed citizenry will ultimately take the right course whatever our differences and debates of the moment.
The partisan extremism, demeaning attitudes, divisive strategies, disrespectful contempt of the cardinal spirit of unity and the cardinal institutions of democracy have led George W. Bush and his vision of one party rule inexorably, inevitably, to a continuing series of catastrophic disasters that will only end, when the cardinal rules of Americanism are restored. That is what the 2006 election is all about. Across the Nation and around the world today, we now know, for whom the bell tolls…
This is a righteous rant for a Sunday morning read. This is a slightly longer excerpt than I usually pull, but this portion of the article flowed so well, it just seemed a shame to try and cut anything. There is much more — and it makes for a good read with your coffee. This is just the sort of kick in the rear that I needed this morning. And I hope it gets your blood flowing as well.
And a note to everyone, whatever their political stripes, be they citizen or media or both or whatever: watch what they do, not the sleight of hand of what they say or the backdrop they choose. You cannot wrap yourself in flag and country while at the same time stomp on Constitution with your actions.
Which brings me back to a portion of the speech that Al Gore gave on Martin Luther King, Jr. day, earlier this year:
A president who breaks the law is a threat to the very structure of our government. Our Founding Fathers were adamant that they had established a government of laws and not men. They recognized that the structure of government they had enshrined in our Constitution – our system of checks and balances – was designed with a central purpose of ensuring that it would govern through the rule of law. As John Adams said: "The executive shall never exercise the legislative and judicial powers, or either of them, to the end that it may be a government of laws and not of men."
An executive who arrogates to himself the power to ignore the legitimate legislative directives of the Congress or to act free of the check of the judiciary becomes the central threat that the Founders sought to nullify in the Constitution – an all-powerful executive too reminiscent of the King from whom they had broken free. In the words of James Madison, "the accumulation of all powers, legislative, executive, and judiciary, in the same hands, whether of one, a few, or many, and whether hereditary, self-appointed, or elective, may justly be pronounced the very definition of tyranny."
Thomas Paine, whose pamphlet, "On Common Sense" ignited the American Revolution, succinctly described America’s alternative. Here, he said, we intended to make certain that, in his phrase, "the law is king."
Vigilant adherence to the rule of law actually strengthens our democracy, of course, and strengthens America. It ensures that those who govern us operate within our constitutional structure, which means that our democratic institutions play their indispensable role in shaping policy and determining the direction of our nation. It means that the people of this nation ultimately determine its course and not executive officials operating in secret without constraint, under the rule of law.
And make no mistake, the rule of law makes us stronger by ensuring that decisions will be tested, studied, reviewed, and examined through the normal processes of government that are designed to improve policy, and avoid error. And the knowledge that they will be reviewed prevents over-reaching and checks the accretion to power.
These are not partisan sentiments, to be lightly dismissed — this goes to the heart of who we are, and what we believe as a nation is important to the continuance of liberty and freedom in this nation of ours. The laws apply equally and across the board to everyone, the President included. Because in this country we are not beholden to a monarchy who rules by fiat — or so says our constitution and our system of laws and our entire history…despite what adherents of the unitary executive theory might argue, the Constitution sets up a system of checks and balances, and does not elevate the executive branch far above all others.
This is not divide and conquer politics, but how we do things — or how we ought to do them, in accordance with the laws of our nation. You don’t unite people by appealing to the baser levels of their nature, you merely play divide and conquer politics in a win-at-all-costs game — but wrapping yourself in gay marriage (and someone please explain to me how my marriage is threatened in any way by two people who happen to be gay and in love? Does this somehow change my marriage in the slightest that they wish to have visitation rights in the ICU or to take their kids in for medical treatment or consult with their schools or any of that?) and "flag burning"? THIS is the biggest problem these people see in our nation today — when people can’t afford both their prescriptions and food? What in the hell is going on here?
And, while we’re at it, you never, ever use a flag as an autographing tool. I’ve been saving this picture back for a while — it royally pisses me off, it’s from the 2004 campaign and yes, that is George Bush putting his signature directly on an American flag. The American Legion folks in my town would be having a heart attack if they saw the picture above, and I’m sure that’s true for folks around the country. American values and flag burning amendment, my ass. Political theater and hollow gestures do not mean you are governing — they only mean that you are campaigning, and not very well at that because the American public isn’t buying it any longer. Why trust someone whose acts contradict what he has said?
The true test of character is what you do when you think no one is watching you. With the Rubber Stamp Republican Congress providing so little oversight and accountability, you have to wonder what’s been going on in the shadows the last five years that we haven’t heard about yet, don’t you?
(Photo: AP Photo/Charles Dharapak. UPDATE: You can read more about the flag photo in this Dana Milbank column.)

There. Second Fitz in three days! Wen ya gonna lurn me the seekrit handshake??
i don’t blame bush or rove so much as i blame the FWF [frightened white folks] who at every turn want to push us into the ditch, whether it’s sending other folks’ kids off to war, or hating gays, or favoring the filthy rich, or putting america second
“Political theater and hollow gestures do not mean you are governing %u2014 they only mean that you are campaigning, and not very well at that because the American public isn’t buying it any longer. Why trust someone whose acts contradict what he has said?”
verr nicely writ! shore do seem lack the tides a’turnin, the times a’changin, till we finely git the deja vu all over agin!
One big problem we have is the conservative corporate takeover of the “mainstream” press. The vast majority of Republicans, Democrats and Independents still get their news from the TV. There’s very little truth on TV.
Hotcha! You on Fire, girl!
The Budowsky article should be read by every Democrat in Congress. (Forget the Repubs, they would never understand because they refuse to understand.) Maybe then the Dems might, just might, understand why much of their base is so outraged. (And my outrage is now spilling over toward them. If they can’t “get it”, they need to get out of the way so we can start over.)
I too wonder at the amount of fear that drives conservatism.
Where does it all come from? And being so primal, it’s immune to logic.
I’m so tired of the yelling…
Are they getting tired too?
Perhaps our common sense of fatigue becomes the denominator we so obviously need.
*******
great Sunday read. sort of a fire-me-up sermon for the believers.
Right on, Christy. I’m glad you had that extra cup of coffee.
I, like you, can’t comprehend how my marriage is threatened by the concept of a loving gay couple’s marriage. Strange people–these fundanazis.
The Big Budowsky
wow, have never read him before, that is one beautifully woven piece – and a current theme if anyone stuck around to catch the Sunday Funnies, or have seen Alter juxtapose the current goings on with what FDR offered this nation at a very dark time
Thanks Christy! (and if you’re so inclined, check out the link I left downstairs)
Why is the Preznit defacing that flag with a Sharpie? Doesn’t he know that when you deface the flag and/or engage in homosexual intercourse, the terrorists get stronger?
I come here every day because of the excellence of the material and because I find it inspiring. This piece is one of the best I have ever read. Thanks for locating, thinking, and synthesizing all this. Budowsky’s invocation of the concept conscience and Bush’s apparent lack of one needs to be hammered on again and again by those who oppose his assault on so many American institutions and citizens.
From previous thread: Biden was actually pretty good on MTP. I only yelled at the TV once during his interview.
From any thread: I can’t get my hopes up about CA-50. What kind of voting machines do they have?
The Republicans will go to the same well (flag, gays, terror) until it doesn’t work anymore. We won’t know if it doesn’t work anymore until November.
Your job is to make it not work anymore.
EPU’s from previous thread, thanks for two good posts this morning Redd.

Prior to 9/11 I hadn’t been much interested in politics save for staying on top of who the candidates were, voting and being concerned about the high profile issues of the day that impacted me and my own. Always registered Independent and, in hinsdight, not nearly as involved as I should have been. I couldn’t stand GWB from the time he entered the national stage though, he rankled me immediately and he tended to set my bullshit detector into overdrive.
9/11 really opened my eyes and prompted some serious soul-searching and inspired an utter obsession with finding out as much as I possibly could about just what in the hell has been going on in our name in geopolitical terms for decades. This dovetailed nicely with the emrgence of the blogosphere and its been an education ever since.
That said, one of the things that I’ve come to apprecaite is that there’s always been a large committed group of Americans fighting like hell for justice, the little guy, the environment, the Constitution, et al. and they’ve done so in silent determination, never for anything more than the cause of peace and justice. While many of their fellow Americans (myself included) took so much of what we enjoy in our lives for granted. Now that this Administration has turned our ship of state squarely toward the iceberg, many of the rest of us have awakened to all of these worthy causes. I want to thank those people that have been fighting the good, just fight all these years against the voraciousness of predatory corporations and corrupt government, trying to make this country and the world a better place.
These are the people, the true liberals, that give me hope. I am proud to join their ranks.
The Republican party and the LRWM will never allow Americans to find common ground- having us divided serves their purposes too well. It’s one of the reasons the media engage in the “false balance” exercise, treating both sides of an issue the same, never pointing out that one side is telling the truth, the other side is lying. Why couldn’t they point out that gay marriage will not effect traditional marriage, an give statistics? Why can’t they point out that burning the flag is constitutionally protected free speech? Why can’t they point out that Bush lied and soldiers died?
Because doing so would eventually unite the country against conservatism, the vehicle corporate America uses to shore up support of obscene profit grabbing.
If want to understand all that Bush and the administration has said, look back at PNAC and the papers they have published. And the speeches all follow the PNAC line. And PNAC’s philosophy leads directly back to the philosophy of Leo Strauss, and the use of the “noble lie.” My reading of Leo Strauss is that it a perversion of Hegel. And Frances Fukyuma[sp]’s phrase “the end of history” is a direct link to Strauss (and by implication) Hegel’s ideas, except that Strauss promotes the idea that it is OK for the politician to deceive the population in order to achieve the greater good.
Look here:

Re: the secret handshake. It’s nothing elaborate. Just a regular handshake, but with your middle finger excluded and pointed directly toward the right.
Not only are the right afraid of the ‘gay marriage’, they fear single, childless, adult women. I don’t get what they fear from those of us that choose not not marry and have kids. My life is pretty full as it is!! While it would be nice to have a partner in life, it’s not critical to maintain life. You wouldn’t believe how many women *hate* me because I’ve never married. They all think I’m out to steal their husbands!! Are they that insecure about themselves and their relationships that I could drive a wedge there???
At the giant Immigration March recently, a winger opponent was on the sidelines holding up an American flag with some screed pinned onto it. I upbraided him for defacing the US flag, telling him it was illegal. He sputtered that he owned this flag and what about free speech? I retorted: “Oh there you go again! I bet you’re the sort that would burn the flag just to make a point!” He blanched – I smiled and went on my way…
am not going to sully this thread with a link – but AP

The reason the next election doesn’t matter is that it aint gonna happen.
they didn’t go to all this trouble to establish a dictatorship and eviscerate the constitution to step down.
Gawd you people are stupid..or is it just gullible. Your political process cannot save you. it’s hopelessly corrupt.
Have fun under fascist rule! And enjoy those detention camps …last count there were 59 throughout the U.S. with Haliburton building more.
Wait till they crash the economy. Then you will see some real shit.
hey cbl
I’ve been on a barrier island w/o any internets.
*ilson, that’s a nice one.
That’s my idea of an evangelical–goes right to the heart. I wonder how Hillary’s co-sponsorship of the flag-burning bill is going to play out for her. Anyway, this non-geek is going to try to print out this entry for her friends. Thanks.
I love the pic. It sums up the Bush admin nicely.
What a great post for a Sunday morning (or anytime), Christy!
Am wondering what you think about the American Bar Association’s decision to investigate the lawfulness/constitutionality of Bush’s 750 signing statements. Could this be a really big deal? From rawstory (Boston Globe):
WASHINGTON — The board of governors of the American Bar Association voted unanimously yesterday to investigate whether President Bush has exceeded his constitutional authority in reserving the right to ignore more than 750 laws that have been enacted since he took office.
http://www.rawstory.com/showou…..?page=full
marblex, is it possible to make your points without the obnoxious insults, we’re all in this together. Thanks.
marblex at 24 — take the screed level down a notch or two. You can do a lot of things on this blog, and discuss a lot of issues, but I won’t tolerate someone insulting our commenters.
jayt,
Thanks for the secret handshake info!
One picture is worth, etc.
When Bush the Elder was prez, I remember seeing an ad for cuddly house slippers with his face, and that of his ghastly wife, on the toes, backed by the image of the American flag.
Now we have Dim Son defacing the flag that his rapid supporters scream so loudly about protecting, defending, never destroying. Guess it makes a difference if your flag-destruction is in aid of free speech or if it’s for political advantage.
Constant at 32 — the picture pretty much summed up my mood about the Administration all by itself.
Along came the decider
Who sat down besider her
And frightened Miss Liberty away
P.S. Don’t forget, flagwaving and biblethumping go hand in hand. As Republican Jesus wrote in the New Republican Testament, “Blessed are the tax cuts, for the plutocrats are favored by the Lord. And to hell (or Iraq, or prison) with all those darn government cheese eating poor people”.

I bought a pair of American flag boxer shorts for my Congresslady to use when discussing desecrating the flag … would Old Navy be unpatriotic?
OT a little, but Thom Hartmann is all over the RFK Rolling Stone article this morning.Doing a pretty good job too.
Thank you for the link- the whole thing was great. Very inspiring.
I wrote a comment over there telling him he needs to be the head speech writer for the Democratic Nominee in ‘08. As I was reading it I realized how powerful it would be outloud.
I almost cried when he wrote about how Bush sits in the same seat as Jefferson. (just writing it now makes me tear up a bit) What a powerful image.
Anyone else long for the day (moving further into the future every day…) that we can hold our heads up and be proud Americans again?
I fear the world my daughter will inherit bears no resemblance to the one I was born into. I used to joke with my dad that we were slowing turning into the USSR as they were becoming more like us (this was “back in the day”). Now I am afraid I was all too right…
Christie
I don’t know if you saw the other order Walton issued on 6/2/06. It details what Libby can have on Plame’s employment and the CIA damage assessment.
Filed 6/2/06 Protective Order
Sorry I’m off topic, I’m never sure if I should put comments in older threads that are more on topic.
Christie, I was hoping you could take a look at this attemped roadmap of the legal documents in the Libby Case and let me know if I’m on the right track. It is not entirely complete. My email is on the sidebar
Great post. I’ll be sure to visit The Washington Note to read the rest of the piece. I used to stop by Steve’s every day, but now only visit once in a while.
A bit off topic…. We all seem to be concerned about the direction our country is headed and a photograph I found in my hometown paper yesterday really disturbed me. Here is a link to it with my thoughts about it… http://www.bluenc.com/node/2615.
For those who don’t wish to travel off-site, I will describe it. It is a group of little boys in helmets, kiddie kevlar, with plastic machine guns. They are preschoolers at a church preschool in Greensboro, NC who have just participated in Army Days where they earned their guns, helmets, vests and walkie-talkies. I may be going way overboard on this, but Church sponsored war games?
I posted about this on our group blog, but most of the other people there are men and I don’t think they get just how disturbing this is. This goes way beyond little boys playing army.
Anyway, it’s left me with a very empty, sad feeling since I saw it last night so I thought if I hung around here for a bit someone would smack me out of it. (please!) I always get inspired when I’m here. Am I blowing this out of proportion?
Christy, muchas gracias for the Budowsky.
RE: the flag amendment. You know, I would consider compromising on it if the likes of Frist and his mouth-breathing followers would agree to treat all American flags with respect. Which means, of course, not flying a flag at night with no illumination, taking down a flag in rainy weather, replacing tattered flags on SUVs, and so on.
It is this shallow, hollow, cynical bullshit that would ban burning a flag but not enforce penalties for mistreating the flag in the most common ways due to pure laziness that drives me crazy.
Keep your eyes peeled for disrespectful flag displays – it’s astonishing how many people and businesses don’t take down their flags at night or leave them up in rainy weather. Or still drive around with tattered flags on their cars.
I’m not including the issue of flags on bikinis, napkins, gimme hats, toilet paper, etc. that should be construed as personal expression – I’m merely ranting about the lack of attention to traditional displays of the flag. Crap, people can’t take the time to properly display the flag as it is but we need a law that prohibits burning it?
Who taught these people that responsibility can be applied at whim?
Hmmm I just posted a long one and am not seeing it in comments. I will wait awhile to see if it shows up. I don’t want to repeat myself. Is anyone else having this problem?
Kind of uplifting, kind of a downer, but well said… there is something to this country, and here’s hoping that people choose to see it for themselves, to ask these kinds of serious questions without getting distracted by the bright shiny things somebody is always trying to sell them.
maybe this is reactionary of me and all, but i say people who believe that there shouldn’t be all these prissy little niceties like “warrants” and “judicial oversight” ought to just freakin’ move to china. they don’t believe in any of that sissy “law” stuff over there… lawyers? shoot ‘em. free press? fuggedaboudit. yeah, china sound like just the ticket. leave the united states for the real patriots; the people who believe in the constitution.
a little off topic, but what the hey
here’s an example of where we are missing the boat
when the president hires cronies, the press says something like;
“the presidents core values are loyalty to his friends”
notice the positvie words that are used
this should read;
“the president doesn’t care who is betraying the country, it’s a den of thieves”
that and things like “whistleblowers” instead of “watchdogs” for the patriots that raise an alarm concerned about the constituion being trashed
this is the battle, we need the proper weapons
First and foremost, everyone should save that flag in reponse to the next stupid spam e-mail that circulates about how “liberals” will desecrate flags.
Simply forward the picture of “Superstar Bush” using the American Flag like a Hollywood “liberal” would use a headshot–for self promotion.
Secondly, the Bush/Rove machine is in HEAVY spin and pushback mode. The myriad tales of “heroic” Condi Rice bringing Bush around to negotiate with Iran—change that meme to “FLIP-FLOP” with every chance you get….Now we are supposed to be happy and all feel goody that George is willing to allow dissenters to speak to him…sounds like another “FLIP-FLOP” to me…….All of the juicy stories from Gonzales quitting on principle to to Barry McCaffrey meeting with Bush are all rehab bullshit spin memes put out by the most negative and destructive man ever to sit at the right hand of a president…The Rancid Turdblossom.
So despite all the pushback and story changing, the problems are all still the same…The Revolt of the Generals…the leaks from within the many agencies..just when Bush thinks he’s getting an upper hand—POW—a new story will hit him…..Watch for some high level outings of people in the Bush adminstration….they have declared war again on gays and I think there will be a few lavendar warriors that are going to return fire this time…
Hang on, and start melting the butter.
-GSD
Sorta OT, but Atrios links to a smackdown of the latest smear against Busby. I would add that because gutter smear politics are SOP for the GOP, even when they get a semi-real issue, most folks have already tuned them out.
Much Ado About Nothing
http://atrios.blogspot.com/200…..3799998680
Kudos to Jay Tea for recognizing that the manufactured Busby flap is in fact manufactured. Yes, it’s the kind of thing her political opponents will try to make something of. That’s politics. But those who wish to operate in the factual world instead of the fact-free world of the racist Michelle Malkin should acknowledge that it’s clear to any honest sentient being what was meant.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought he was desecrating the flag. I agree with GSD we should save the pic to pull out at the appropriate time.
Oh the blood boils….these bastards, bastards on so many levels for so many crimes.
That picture – I’ve seen it before – should be on billboards all over the country (could WE do that?) – it’s emblematic of so much about the idiot king.
On gay marriage, I too find it incomprehensible that my marriage (man/woman) would be threatened in any way by any two other people wanting to form a union out of love and respect. It strikes me that marriage as it is now practiced is a huge violation of church/start separation. Religious institutions are deputized to establish what are essentially contracts defining shared property/liability, shared parenting responsibility, shared insurance, etc. And the laws governing these contracts reflect religious sentiments – especially in regard to the gender of who may participate. Wouldn’t it be more sane (and faithful to the Constitution) to have everyone (m:m, f:f, m:f) who wants to be married do so through domestic partnerships as a civil tool to define the nature of the contract. Then, if it’s your preference, to consecrate such a union among the religious community of your choosing, though this latter event would have no force of law. I know, a pipe dream.
This isn’t going to happen in the foreseeable future because allegence to tribe clearly supercedes allegence to country – for too many people, either economic/business interests or bigotry comes way before acknowledgement that we are all indeed in this together.
BRAVO !!! Excellent Post !!! (except marblex 24)
Awesome post. I wish the entire voting public could read it. Nothing like cool water being splashed on your face.
Let’s hope we can save ourselves.
Bravissimo to Budowsky, Christy, *ilson, whoever took that Dubya-desecrating-the-flag shot, and the ABA (just for starters)!
I want to highlight Budowsky’s conclusion, every bit as soaring, and to me even more crucial than, the passages Christy shared:
“In conclusion, I offer one plea to those who are the most liberal, the most Democratic, the most angry and resentful of the injustices and wrongs and arrogances of recent years. I am with you, and I am one of you, but all of us, I hope, will remember this:
“The message of the American people today, and the lessons of two hundred years of our history, is that the case we take to the country before the election, and our aspirations for America after the election, is not to let our opponents take us down to their level with our vindictiveness or anger answering theirs, no matter how right or deserved our feelings might be.
“We love our country, we love our freedom, whether we take positions of opposition or support, we do so with a fervent spirit of patriotism, a respect with those of differing views, the love of truth and honor that was shown by Jessica [Lynch], the indescribable courage and fidelity shown by the Marine with no name, the checks and balances, the constitution, the rule of law, the spirit of the great American family and the timeless truth that none of us is an island, and each of us is an indispensable part of the main.
“Against each other, we are nothing. Together, we are America.”
BMuse,
it’s old home week at FDL, first cleter and now you (was wondering after you the other day, thinking you were busy w/ NC politics) checking out your blog – good to have you with us again
MikeEss 38, yes, I sure am. I tell my sons about the days when we could put any bumper sticker on our car and not worry about tires getting slashed. The days when religion was not used as a bludgeon.
TITLE 4–FLAG AND SEAL, SEAT OF GOVERNMENT, AND THE STATES
CHAPTER 1–THE FLAG
Sec. 3. Use of flag for advertising purposes; mutilation of flag
That pretty much covers all the ReThugs do with the flag.
cbl, thank you so much. I have been busy with NC politics and I have so much information to send Pach for the roots project. I’m ashamed to say I haven’t done that yet.
I do stop by often and read, but just don’t find the time to chat. I feel guilty when I post and run, but that’s what I wind up doing most of the time.
Sue, I’m gonna use that “Move to China” line.
Thanks!

Margot (52), soon’s I get my Volvo (;-})home from the carwash, that “Worst. President. Ever.” sticker that just arrived is going on there. Maybe I’m risking some pretty-recent tires, but you know what? Prolly not.
Pach! I was just thinking about you! We’ve been in full swing since March and I want to see if our little group can be included in the roots project.
Wikapedia on Treatment of the Flag
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_flag
~ The flag should never be used for any advertising purpose.
~ The flag should never have placed on it, or attached to it, any mark, insignia, letter, word, number, figure, or drawing of any kind.
~ The flag should not be draped over the hood, top, sides, or back of a vehicle, railroad train, or boat.
And this little point-
~ When a flag is so worn it is no longer fit to serve as a symbol of the United States, it should be destroyed in a dignified manner, preferably by burning. (Note: Most American Legion Posts regularly conduct a dignified flag burning ceremony, often on Flag Day, June 14.)
So will the American Legion be charged with desecration of the flag by performing their civic duty of proper disposal of the flag?

Is that not a picture of Bush desecrating the American flag? Keep that one around in case he starting pushing a distractive flag amendment.
katymine — I believe the amendment as proposed has exceptions for the proper disposal of flags. And having participated in the disposal ceremony at a local legion, I can tell you that they do it with a lot of reverence and respect. (And in my neck of the woods, most of the vets are Democrats…so this whole “patriotism belongs to Republicans” malarky is just so much Rovian crap — and I, for one, am sick of them trying to use patriotism as a means of “divide and conquer.” For shame.
OT, Stephen Colbert’s commencement speech given yesterday has been posted:
http://www.knox.edu/x12547.xml
Pollyusa 29 — that’s so helpful, I’m so glad you started your own blog. I’ll add you to the blogroll.
Sorry ya’ll. The CIC can change the Title anytime he wants – Bush can make the evidentiary value of the photo moot:
Section 178: Modification of rules and customs by President
Any rule or custom pertaining to the display of the flag of the United States of America, set forth in section 171-178 of this title, may be altered, modified, or repealed, or additional rules with respect thereto may be prescribed, by the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the United States, whenever he deems it to be appropriate or desirable; and any such alteration or additional rule shall be set forth in a proclamation.
:-)
Pach – I will…but it will take me a while. We’ve been very, very busy. I don’t want to leave anything out. :)
Is there a link to the photo of the president signing that flag? People I send it to won’t believe it’s really him unless I have a link.
Fine post, Christy; great essay.
And I second what jay at 17 said, in remembering those who have been quietly toiling in the fields, who know the answer to “What would a patriot do?” Jay, bring that one back later today, when Glen G shows up.
*ilson — you shouldn’t upset flag wavers. It makes their heads explode.
I just don’t know what to say… I hate to keep harping on philosophy, but… It’s the philosophy, stupid.
The PNAC philosophy of Leo Strauss is diametrically opposed to both the left and the right. The left caught on to it a long time ago, and now the right is catching on. The curtain has been thrown back, and there is no undoing it. The mood of the nation has changed, and the air is charged, and the most fundamental ideas of the founders are being torn asunder and we, all of us, left and right know it.
“The way I see it, Barry, this is should be a very dynamite show” – thank you, Frank Zappa
lotuslander,
I’ve found bumper stickers are a really good way to connect with people of like minds here in Ohio. One that never gets messed with is “Teamster for Kerry” on a truck with a gun rack. Just wish I had one….;)
Hilde – but he has to set forth the new rule in a proclamation.
I can read it now.
I Preznit Bush do hereby proclame that I can right on flags when I need to sine my name. I’m the decider and that is whut I decidered.
Sined, Preznit Bush.
Yesterday a self professed Conserative called our local Air America station during one of the local shows, stating that “You Liberals” need to be less angry and strident so that moderates will listen to you.
I think we have not been strident enough. The left, Dems, Liberals, Progressives are accused of being wimps, no message, not strong. We need to speak up more, use strong clear language to express issues and counter every time.
Did anyone see Markos & Jerome on CNBC last night? I was surprised how fair it sounded. I did not see the last segment and was hoping to have it on crooksandliars to catch that part. And to have Markos and Jerome say, now is the time to turn your computers off and get out to meet your neighbors, friends and co-workers enlist them to Crash the Gate…
That Yearlykos has hit the cable news, that Rush is abusing callers who will be in Vegas soon….. It will be interesting to see how they spin this event with 1100 registered attendees….
OfT: A little bit of good news today
By greenboy Jun 3 2006 – 9:36pm
“There was a little bit of good news today. Remember how I was bitching about Miami Shrubya and his faith-based prisons a few years ago? Turns out a Federal judge just ruled a similar program in Iowa unconstitutional. Don’t break out the bubbly just yet, though…with Scalia, Scalito, Roberts and Long Dong on the case, this ruling may well die in the Supreme Embarrassment…..”
Hilde 66: yeh, but he’ll have a heckuva job explaining this one and living it down. NOT.
RoB Zuber: THANK YOU!
lotuslander at 9:14 quotes this:
“is not to let our opponents take us down to their level with our vindictiveness or anger answering theirs, no matter how right or deserved our feelings might be.”
I think most progressives, and certainly all the regulars on this blog, are constitutionally incapable of the kind of contemptible behavior that so enrages us. I, for one, cannot even begin to understand what roils in their minds, festers in their preconscious. But still, it is good to be reminded about the perils of engagement with this enemy.
The dilemma for me is fighting under the Marquis of Queensbury rules when the opponents have no principles.
Margot, I looked for a direct link, didn’t find one yet, but I found this:

Laughter is healthy, I’ve heard.
Thanks Jane 67
The blog will probably be mostly for organizing information. The plan is to have an entry for each member of the administration and the reporters involved as well.
This Plame Calendar is also useful (sometimes slow loading free hosting), especially 2003 entries. The Plame Calendar is also linked on the sidebar of the blog.
Christy 65-
I agree, I am the one who did not serve in the military but as a dependent wife for 11 years…
Only one ReThug in our military family and he has been whining about the lost of his VA benefits… Really PO’ed, he did two tours in Vietnam, 30 Marine and retired Gunnery SGT.
Dad is really PO’d about O’Reilly comments. Dad was one of the few in the 2nd wave that survived the battle on Tarawa.
pollyusa @ 39:
Excellent job of info architecting the Plameography. I’ve been yearning for an interactive calendar since last year – I require visuals to keep all the interconnected pieces straight.
I’m too lazy (or busy!) to do one myself (but not too lazy to properly care for my American flag!) so thanks much.
Bookmarked under “Plameology – Reference Tools”
Goopers are playing the only cards they have left- the flag burning amendment and the gay marriage amendment. This is all pure theatre of course. These amendments are presented annually and rejected. I’m not sure that anyone even notices the flag burning amendment any more.
The gay marriage amendment is becoming a bit more of a political gamble every year. In the first place- it’s not CLEARLY popular- although it has a narrow majority of support.
Secondly, it is a reminder to the zealots that all of their work, money, and bile, has produced NOTHING tangible- not a bloody thing. How pleased will they be to see that damned thing brought up again and voted down again. Hardly inspirational to a group who thinks that they personally selected the president in 04.
Here’s the polling on the gay marriage question:
.
“Would you favor or oppose a constitutional amendment that would define marriage as being between a man and a woman, thus barring marriages between gay or lesbian couples?”
.
Favor Oppose Unsure
% % %
5/8-11/06 50 47 3
4/29 – 5/1/05 53 44 3
3/18-20/05 57 37 6
7/19-21/04 48 46 6
5/2-4/04 51 45 4
3/5-7/04 50 45 5
2/9-12/04 53 44 3
2/6-8/04 47 47 6
7/03 50 45 5
As you can see, it has it’s ups and downs- but on average gets about a five percent margin in favor (currently three points).
There’s some bad news for goopers inside those numbers though. The biggest demographic group in favor of the damned thing are over sixty five. The youngest voters are dead set against it. It’s another case where the goopers are mortgaging their future for immediate political results. As the supporters die off- the political calculus on this measure will shift fairly rapidly- and goopers will be faced with a young electorate who sees them as idiots – and a hispanic electorate that sees them as rascists.
Nice job goopers.- Heck of a job!
Thanks Ron Zuber at 9:29.
iftthethunderdontgetya, thanks!
katymine 75 — there were a few observations on Markos/Jerome last nite — chech out comments on Late night. General view: their reasonableness was in stark contrast to the view of the mean bloggers — and Russert treated them with respect, even as they took their “nice” shots at him and Bush etc.
rw,
good morning, didn’t see an endorsement for either Francine or Bilgeboy in SDUT this am – and nothing in LAT – have you seen anything today?
Bmuse 74,
Why stop with sining his naim on the flag? He as inherent powers so…
“I Preznit Bush do hereby proclame that I can right on flags when I need to sine my name. And I can wipe my ass with the flap win I need two. And I can use the flag be-hinde me when I speek to the nashin to distrakt from the lies my staff makes me tell you. I’m the decider and that is whut I decidered.”
Am just popping in far a brief few minutes to see what you all are up to and read two exceedingly fine posts by Christy. “Wow” is the word that ocmes to mind. Have a houseful of people arriving around 5:00 to celebrate our daughter’s 23rd birthday, and LOTS to do before they get here. It’s emblematic of my FDL addiction that I HAD TO check in at some point…
Agree that Al Gore was great on This Week – they sure spent a lot of time talking about the possibilities of an ‘08 run. Tried to parse Gore to see if he left any wiggle room, but I came away thinking he’s pretty sure he isn’t going to do it.
To go back to the “what gives you hope” thread, I would have to say my kids do that for me. It’s so wonderful to see them turning out so well – in spite of what I’m sure are the numerous mistakes my husband and I must have made with them.
This place does that for me, on a daily basis. It’s so great to be part of this community and to brainstorm and bitch and commiserate and snark off and cheer the victories.
Someone said that hope was a sign of failure, or words to that effect. I think failure comes when you have no hope, when you are so convinced that nothing will change that you do nothing. For me, hope is about looking ahead, about working to make dreams come true, about believing in something that is bigger than I am.
And on that note, I hope you all have a splendid day – it’s finally cooled off here in northern Maryland, so doors and windows are open and the wonderful scent of the wild roses is wafting through the house (along with strawberry pie fragrance!).
(Oh – and before I forget…those of you who think your posts are getting lost in the ether, I can assure you that I, at least see them. I realized some time ago that even when I hit Submit and get that big red X and a server error message, that if I just wait a second or two, the post “takes” and appears as usual.)
rwcole – Maybe they’ve caught on and realize they are losing their young voters. Take a look at this picture – http://www.bluenc.com/node/2615
For those of you who don’t want to go off site that picture is of a group of boys wielding plastic machine guns, wearing helmets and kiddie kevlar. It is from a church sponsored preschool event called “Army Days” in Greensboro, NC. I’ve been so sad and outraged after seeing the picture that I haven’t been able to concentrate on other things.
I actually came here this morning just to be around like-minded people. I might not be as hawkish as Murtha, but I am more so than many Democrats and this picture still disturbs me.
I tried to post this earlier and the post disappeared, so if something similar shows up, please forgive me.
Hilde @84
Hilarious!
Markos and Jerome were great on Russert’s show. Here is a dKos diary from yesterday about it:
http://www.dailykos.com/storyo…..91715/7108
Goopers still haven’t found their voice on the slaughter in Iraq.
One popular position is “innocent until proven guilty”. Unfortunately- taking that position logically precludes one from saying much else-so most of the goopers go ahead and speculate- like everyone else. Their positions:
-Shit happens
-Shit happened in other wars (apparently the argument here is that if you supported the big war- you should support this one too cause american troops did murder in both.)
-If we allow ourselves to think too much about this murder, we will lose our resolve, aid the enemy, endanger the troops, and lose this all important war against terrorism. This is, I think, the preferred gooper position- and has the happy implication that drugs are good cause they help you to avoid thinking about unpleasant things.
The photo of bush signing the flag shows yet another view of that gaydar scrambling haircut of his.I know this is petty but am I alone in thinking bush has always had the worst haircut.I cannot help myself, everytime I see bush I think to myself, horrible man… god awful haircut. That hairstyle is another bad decision by the decision maker.
My best guess is that he tells his barber not to mess with the existing hair formula which has a certain “don’t confuse me with someone who is esthetically sensitive or possibly gay” air to it .
Christy, your “For shame” gets to the heart of it. The current crew have no shame.
Aaargh – second long post has disappeared. I must not be following the rules.
Let’s see if this works…
Disturbing picture of boys playing army at church sponsored preschool.
Here is a link to my writeup and the picture that has been bothering me since last night. It is of a church sponsored preschool “Army Days” celebration.
Thanks for the link to Budowsky’s great article. Yeah, I’m really pissed about the wave of flag burnings going on in all those librul cities! Bastards! Those dirty hippie commie fags! Huh? Wha’d you say? Oh, well, nevermind then.
i really like his last sentence:”against eachother we are nothing. Together we are America.”
rwcole @ 70
I have had a couple of posts disappear (I probably wasn’t linking properly)
The picture I linked to at 91 shows how the GoOPers are going to recapture the youth vote.
Hypatia 77: – you nailed it; is this a contest between true conservatives and true liberals,in which the rules of civil discourse should apply, or is it between patriots and fascists? And do the rules change if it’s the later?
There was an article today in the NYT about the increasing use by Bush/Gonzalez of the “state secrets” argument as a means to have lawsuits against the Administration dismissed, with no questions asked. The article’s discussion wasn’t as good as a comment Mary gave us last night, talking about the NSA case and the Judge telling the Gov to come back and explain why the state secrets argument should fly against an argument that the “secret” is unlawful govt action. But the article’s bottom line was important. If the govt is to be allowed to assert the state secrets defense to shut down a law suit, with no questions asked, then the only thing that makes this concept defensible/acceptable is if the Gov is honest in the first place. If the Gov lies, then the defense becomes another path to tyranny.

CBL–I was SHOCKED that the Union didn’t do an editorial on Busby’s statement this morning. The LA Times doesn’t seem to believe that San Diego exists- so no surprise there. Didn’t watch the local news channels to see how it was handled- and the only robo call I recieved this morning was from a sherrif telling me to vote for Westly.
So far so good. Maybe Francine ducked a bullet.
CBL- Of course the San Diego Union endorsed Bilbray as soon as he announced- they will recap their sterling recommendation tomorrow so that voters will have the benefit of their deep analysis when they go to the polls on tuesday.
Holy gaucamole! Christy and the Sunday gospel of patriots act. I thought this post was brewing after your first call to arms this morning : )..
A sermon that makes one sit up straight and cheer. Think I just have to go fondle my old flag collection. Thanks
rwcole – those robocalls are making me crazy, but I now have Al Gore on my answering machine asking me to vote for Garamendi and Sally Fields asking me vote yes on 82.
Do you have any thoughts re: Speier vs. Garamendi for Lt. Gov? I like Speier’s message: If you want to see what I will do, look at what I’ve done. And the fact that she’s alive at all, after being gunned down and left for dead with her boss, Leo Ryan, in Jonestown just blows me away.
http://www.boston.com/news/nat…..hallenges/
It is laughable that the ABA waits until Bush has nearly completed his shredding of the Consitution (750 “signing statments” later) before they decided they should look into it. What’s that saying about shutting the barn door?
Dereliction of duty is what I call it.
Anyone notice what’s goin on with the White House spin machine??
We are being treated to deep insights. Staff are leaking intimate secrets like:
Clusterfuck is now going out of his way to listen to dissenting opinions.
Condi- who has always been the voice of reason in the administration now has the president’s ear and the evil messages of Darth Cheney and Comrade Rove are being ignored.
The press gobbles this shit up like flies at a picnic- and prints it all above the fold. Condi’s ugly face is plastered everywhere. Condi- the savior of humanity battles the evil forces who have taken over our government.
Need a puke bag.
“The more important question is: who is Bush’s conscience?” Well, perhaps there are those poor souls that were born without (or maybe somehow were taught to live without) that most important component, and necessary attribute. Bush sometimes reminds of Nixon in that respect. Or perhaps, Adolf Hitler, Stalin or a bunch of others with the same personality affliction and defect. For me, it seems conscience is what seperates us, and defines human beings as opposed to say, fish. Without compassion, sometimes defined as conscience, what are we? A constituent part of a good politician, or anybody for that matter, is having an innate particle that tells us what is fair, and above all, “just”. Bush appears to be totally lacking in that most human and essential trait. I think it’s called in the colloquial, “understanding”. The president of the United States shouldn’t need anyone to be his/her conscience. He should have that ability already built-in. Otherwise this person should not be the most powerful and influential person in the world.
The dilemma for me is fighting under the Marquis of Queensbury rules when the opponents have no principles.
We need to fight with the Return of Odysseus rules –
Come in as a beggar, string the bow, shoot the arrow through the axes and hit the bullseye — then lock the doors and slaughter your enemies.
Figuratively speaking, of course.
The Odyssey, book 22, lines 496-504, Fitzgerald translation:
“His call brought no reply, only the doors
were opened, and she came. Telemakhos
led her forward. In the shadowy hall
full of dead men she found his father
spattered and caked with blood like a mountain lion
when he has gorged upon an ox, his kill –
with hot blood glistening over his whole chest,
smeared on his jaws, baleful and terrifying –
even so incrimsoned was Odysseus
up to his thighs and armpits.”
We need Democratic candidates that are willing to be as tough as Odysseus, so that the rightful owners of the American Dream can be restored.
Christy-
Thanks for the great, but heartbreaking, post. I find myself on the verge of tears every time I read an essay like this.
Today’s WaPo has a must-read op-ed by “Dana L.” that succinctly describes what has happened to women’s reproductive rights in this country over the past few years:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/…..01405.html
Got robocalls from Dick Cheney and John McCain the other day. Goopers must have me confused with someone else.
Yoooo, Christy!
Just like sittin’ in church!
katymine #75:
For one thing, Malkin will have some folks there to photograph the more colorfully-dressed attendees, and these photos will show up on her website and/or Hot Air to demonstrate “the utter moonbattiness of the far-out fringies” or whatever. She’s already referred to YKos and mocked the Lamont netroots commercial.
And there might be recording of presentations to see if any particularly juicy quotes can be snagged out of context.
I suppose Byron York will be there furiously taking notes on how to reverse-engineer the netroots.
Hopefully the YKos organizers have planned for such contingencies, as well as for any SA types who might try to use brute force instead of cunning. Then again, Markos is a smart dude, so he might have something up his sleeve.
mommy,
Wow- Lt Governor. I can’t even remember how I voted for Lt. Governor- or why. Sorry- I’m no help.
I hope YearlyKos will continue and actually be yearly. It will be a while before I can take time away to do something like that for myself. My husband travels and I just don’t have anyone to watch the girls if I take off for a while.
I will be there in 2010. I can’t wait to read about all the happenings.
rw,
grew up with now defunct Copley published Sacramento Union so I am in no way surprised they initially endorsed Bilbray, just didn’t find it in this am’s endorsements box – of course, they were probably once big Cunningham fans -lol!
http://www.washingtonpost.com/…..00237.html
Here’s the latest leaked story about how Condi the pure battled the evil Dick and won!
Take yer anti nausea medication.
And speaking of YKos, even though I’ll be tractor-beamed to my immediate area, will there be I’m a ReddHead souvenier t-shirts available?
I think it’s time to hit the MSM’s sponsors. We can all work on making a list of the commercials that air on Wolf Blitzer for example. Although it would mean actually having to watch the show, I think it is important to start playing the game by the Republican rules. If the whole blogosphere stopped buying the advertised product and create negative news stories for the companies, just maybe we can lose them even a little advertising dollars. Let’s face it, their subscriptions are down and if people didn’t have to commute from Connecticut and Long Island and Jersey into Manhattan, who would bother to buy these papers. We have to create a list and stop purchasing products.
My mother today told me she is done with Bush. Finally. I spent yesterday in Fort Lauderdale and mentioned during lunch that the Bushes sent out Holiday cards for Christmas instead of Merry Christmas. Then she told me a story about a guy from work who mentioned that kids in his neighborhood growing up sometimes abused animals. She told me that she could never understand how people could do this to animals. So, I mentioned a story about GWB and frogs and Frist and kittens. She was shocked. Through everything, this is what did it for her. It took me 5 years to convince her to end her devotion to the GOP.
I’m happy I didn’t have to sink low enough to telling her about GWB milking a horse…
My Republican brother stopped by and I told him about the Rolling Stone Kennedy article and he said he didn’t read it. I handed him a copy of it that I had printed the night before. He said that all politicians cheat and Dems are a bunch of sore losers. He will never vote Democrat but I bet he would vote for a third party. He mentioned that he was disgusted (he was a volunteer at the 2000 RNC convention)and I even think (not sure)he may have taken the oath.
Does anyone here have a copy of the oath that they pledge before they wsh it down with their first glass of Kool aid.
Why does my brother hate the Democrats so much?
Why does my brother not see that our freedoms are in jeopardy?
How threatened are journalists today that they have totally ignored the voting scams and why aren’t any of them in jail? There are kids doing 6 years in jail for pot and sometimes I think they are slowly arresting people of the Democrat Persuasion to purge them from the rolls.
When people mention that this is a fake war, I tell them that when soldiers are dying overseas it is a real war.Since I finished reading the Kennedy article, I have been very depressed. I feel ready to cut myself off from my Republican family members and to me, this is sad because I love them but if they weren’t related to me, I would never sit at a table and break bread with them. We have been so close forever and having reached this conclusion today on my drive back from Ft. Lauderdale, I’m counting on all the posters here to make up for my loss. Sorry to put so much pressure on all of you….I usually get a lot of gifts at Christmas from my family so in a couple of months I will be posting my wish list so that everone knows what to get me.
Thanks to all for filling in as my extended family while I cut myself off from those I love and have spent my whole life with. Also, my colleague that shares my office space is a dye hard republican so I get no relief there either. With everything going on he mentioned Friday that “I see Michael Moore is getting sued for not getting permission from someone in his Fahrenheit movie”. Of course he never saw it because it was a lefty wacko tin foil hatwear flick and he has no use for anything Democratic. He is so thrilled with his tax breaks that he’d eat the corn out of any Republica’s shit because he is so isolated from direct results of this war. I sit opposite him with an 18 year old son who gets calls and letters from the military on a continuous schedule. When I quietly mention “I see one of your Republicans just got indicted” he shrugs and says “they’re all a bunch of crooks”. Although he loves the Gop he is unable to name me three things that Bush has done for the people in this country. Do I now have to wish that the Hurricane season hits his home and that he has to don a blue roof for 8 months and wait for Fema to find his bloated body up in his attic so that he awakens and joins me in the light? Yes, I guess I will wish that then if that is what it takes. But why, oh why, does he, deep down and hidden, secretly and probably hate me for my beliefs. I don’t hate him. How big a tax break will it take the GOP to convince him that liberals should be deported? If, on top of a tax break, he received an extra 20 grand a year, how low will my colleague go? He doesn’t know any of this because we get along great as far as our tasks and selling projects and we click and work as one.
How much money is enough? Who is holding the billions sent to Iraq? I would love to be president because on my first day on the job, I would announce that in 30 days new dollars will be issued and old dollars would be worthless. Folks have 30 days to exchange their currency…..I’ll bet we’d find out who is holding all the cash. Wouldn’t it be something if the owners of all that cash had to come to a location with Fitz sitting behind a counter to change currencies. How can we pay $3.00 at the pumps and the oil companies enjoy record profits? How is that possible in this country. I have a funny feeling that Republithugs have been working in the bowels of this country on stealing the next election to end all elections. If we have one.
And the funny thing is, Ill bet there are 10,000 people or less, who actually still back Bush. The squeaky wheel gets the grease. What a scam and the whole planet sits and watches. A hundred Germans can wreak havoc in a concentration camp filled with 10,000 prisoners. Ten thousand soldiers scattered throught the MSM and the government are wreaking havoc on the whole world. I’m so depressed. L8tr
cbl- I signed up to take the LA Times because of my disgust with the Union.
J. Robert Caldwell can bring me to the point of violent rage- just by seeing his by-line.
Now I am equally enraged at the LA Times who has apparently decided to speak out only on issues like LA sewage treatment centers. Since LA is primarilly composed of sewage- I’m not sure why they bother.
Southern California would be a great place for someone to publish a NEWSPAPER!
I was depressed after the 2004 election. I am afraid I will be despondent when the spineless Democrats fail to control either House in 2006. The Republicans are already two legs up with corporate media unabashed support. The GOP has another thing going for them. They are radicals. They will do anything to stay in power. Play the race card, pander and steal votes.
Regarding the Gore interview on Stephanopolis this morning.
Gore sounded great in the one-on-one interview.
Stephanopolis seemed deliberately obtuse, repeatedly asking versions of the same question based on false presumptions previously refuted by Gore.
Basically, Stephanopolis seemed committed to characterizing projections of more than a few inches rise in sea level over the next century as irresponsible claims for which no evidence exists.
The most mind blowing part of the show was watching the pundits discuss Gore’s interview. Stephanopolis’ questions to the panel focused exclusively on whether Gore would run and whether Hilary would have any impact on his decision. These are things that frankly no one can possibly know right now. But of course the pundits were more than happy to make guesses and poke fun at Gore, claiming he is being disingenuous when he said that he had not made up his mind definitively that he would not run.
So the pundits sat around wasting their time and ours engaged in a pointless discussion about Gore’s political future when he had just got done talking about what he, and many scientists, believe is the greatest threat to the planet in human history – global warming.
Not a moment of the pundits’ time was spent discussing the very issue of global warming that Gore has focused his entire public life on for the past several years and on which his interview with Stephanopolis had been almost exclusively focused.
It was a breathtakingly irresponsible waste of time, and a perfect example of why the pundit class fears the internet as a source of real news and factual analysis.
Gore needs to appear in formats where he is presented with the opposition’s point of view and hits it out of the park.
There is a limit to the value of “friendly” interviews. Interviews that lay the competing claims side by side are often much more important.
All the ways Bush has fucked up, and still no hard core left wing. Where are the guerillas, communinsts, subverts, and sabateurs?
If the U.S. recognizes that the far left of the U.S. is limited to only environmentalists, peaceniks, and bloggers, then they’re going to continually take America further to the right. What’s to stop them?
Well, hopefully the senate and the house. This is really our last chance. So vote in ‘06. Do whatever you can to ensure this occurs. No more fucking around.
Enraged as I am by these bastards, the one thing that I try to do is badger people into actually voting. It amazes me that more people vote for American Idle than for the President of these United States. It usually takes quite a bit to turn someones, (for lack of a better word) laziness, into action but, 100% of the time , they feel good about it in the end.
Looks like Ohio might bring up a nice and draconian anti-abortion law to the fore very soon…..This may be the deathknell for the Republican supremacy in Ohio…..
Most people think abortion, bad. Illegal abortions, worse.
Notice the Republicans don’t really want to talk about abortion so much anymore….
-GSD
I don’t usually do this and the post will probably disappear but #24 your attitude is typical of a class of people who evidently are unable to see what this administration is doing to America, and that they want us to be at each others throats. This is not a partisan issue, it is an American issue and by your disrespect and lack of wisdom you denigrate this country. You are not patriots except in the sense of agreeing with those whose false patriotism is really a cover for the destruction of our country, its rule of law, and the Constitution of the United Staes of America.
rwc – interesting, isn’ it, that story doesn’t take the “Condi was so incompetent at garnering support for the President’s position that, despite representing the most powerful nation in the world, she got a smackdown from Germany, France, Britain, Russia and China. As a result of her absolute failure to take the President’s wholly inept policy and pander it appropriately, the President is now faced with the unthinkable.
Talk to a country before you bomb it.
Guess she can take that magic lasso off Cheney now.

The links today have been very good – Wash Note, Sullivan, my fave – the Colbert commencement.
OrangeJ – for a lot of technical reasons, the signing statements are a difficult subject to tackle legally. Not enough time to go into it now, as I am heading out the door, but things like standing, case in controversy, deference to Executive decisions going to executory and application aspects, etc.
The ABA, State and local Bar Associations and more importantly, the lawyers – people like me — we’ve all be doing too little. Criticism couldn’t be more apt. Sorry.
Hope to hit the end of the book thread
We’re lookin for 30% turnout in the California primary. The newspapers say that people are sick of elections- and we have had WAY more than our share with the recall election- the elect Arnie election- and the vote for Arnie’s wet dreams election- then the replace Duke the crook election- which resulted in the runoff election we are having for the same seat on Tuesday- followed in November by another election for the same seat- presumably involving the same case of characters.
Electionitis.
What’s Bush doing writing on the flag as if it were some ordinary piece of paper? especially when he s–ts on the Constitution every day as if it were written on loo paper? The imperial autograph . . . next he’ll be declaring he’s the Divine Author-er, channelling the words as G-d speaks them into his earwax.
rwcole – agreed. I think Gore basically smacked down Stephanopolis today when Steph tried to downplay the global warming threat. What bothered me was that Steph seemed too dumb to catch on to what Gore was saying, so he kept going down a line of questioning based on the same false presumptions.
Eventually, however, a glimmer of recognition flickered in Steph’s eyes as he seemed to realize he was facing someone who wouldn’t back down and who had full command of the facts. So of course, Steph changed the subject to the possibility of an ‘08 run for Gore and stayed on the topic through the interview and on into the pundit panel.
Well, can anyone else chime in with Lt. gov. info for California? Either candidate seems good to me, although I hear “corporate shill” about Jackie more than Garamendi. I like her, I like her moxie and think she would make a good member of the governing team.
Christy, Jane, Pach – will you be setting up a YKos post where we can go to find out things like:
What are you wearing?
Are you even bringing a bathing suit?
Can we all bring our most hippie costumes and make a sign that says something snarky about Michelle Malkin and get her to take a group picture of the moonbats?
THanks, Siun, for doing all that hard work. Looking forward to meeting you all next week.
Fuck this used to be some country you know.
Some real republic – now what!?
The United stinkin’ Snakes of America!
A fucking shitty hated loathed and rightly reviled empire for swine.
Just one thing though.
Don’t ever EVER let even just one of these rat weasel bastard’s say it was the majority that decided this. I continue to think well of the majority of the inhabitant’s of Norte America and I know they will come back from this – they already are. We will win this thing. It’s a living thing.
Hiya Mary—It’s VERY interesting that Rove figures he can use Condi to save this administration’s sorry ass- and yes- there is zero objective discussion about ANYTHING positive this woman has done for the country- NOTHING- that’s what!
There were some stories printed before she became secretary of state on her putrid refusal to stand up for her own people against Rummy and the Ticky Dick- but those are long forgotten- which I had saved links.
She’s a cowardly asskisser about 20,000 leagues above her ability the way I figure it- being groomed for sainthood by Pope Karl.
oh mommybrain,
had the same thoughts about malkintent -then I thought well hey, why can’t we just Mary Mapes her sorry racist ass with an “accurate but not true” leak ? I know, I know, as progressives, we must remain ethical but there are times when it’s difficult to contain my inner provocateur
Hypatia 75 (LUV yer blog-handle, btw, been meaning to tell you that), “MofQ rules”? Maybe, but …
That way lies sanity. AND, I submit, that way lies what this wornout, mind-blown, had-way-more-than-enough-of-this-Chimpian-horsepucky populace is crying out for as NEVER before.
Time for some grownup behavior around here, dang it, sez they (we)!
NOT TO MENTION that the strict observance of those rules (aka the Declaration of Independence and The Constitution of the United States) are the ONLY thing — the UR-thing — that made and for so long kept the USofA the hope of the world. Repugnican desertion of those rules, from Haldeman-Erlichman’s and Lee Atwater’s day on into the era of Rove’s Ratfuckers, has turned us into something toxic to ourselves and everybody else on this blue ball.
What every recent poll captures is this whole disgusted country shouting, “E-FUCKING-NOUGH OF THIS!” If we Dems have no better sense and character than to mirror those Repug dirtbag behaviors, we’ll 100% deserve the Screw-You-Too, Jerk we ask for.
I cannot imagine what would ever render THIS crowd THAT stupid. Not on my worst day could I imagine that. Sorry. Huh-uh.
Nope.
Prof Rat
In the long run, I think things look good for the dems in the USA. If you look at the track record of the Clusterfuck administration- what you see is a desperate attempt to get their licks in before they are inundated with a demographic flood that will make them an endangered species.
Cheney/Rove tried to do two things.
1) Raid the treasury to make future dem presidents powerless- eliminate as much tax burden on the wealthy as possible to make it difficult to get back to the tax allocation they faced coming into office. Create long term international conflicts that might favor goopers in the future, etc. These were all “get your licks in now before it’s too late” moves- not moves of a party confident of it’s future standing.
They also made some weak attempts to kiss a little hispanic ass in hopes of staving off the coming flood- but they never had much faith in their ability to pull this one off.
The long term political future will be dem- but it may take a couple more elections for that to become clear.
Hypatia, excuse me — you know I’m hollering at them, not you, I do hope.
Whhhoooo hoooooo!
Glenn Greenwald smacks the crap out of hair boy Byron York on the Corner.
RE: BLOG-POWERED BOOK SALES [Byron York]
Blogger Glenn Greenwald has replied to my post about his book, How Would A Patriot Act? , and its rise to the New York Times bestseller list:
With respect to the question you asked yesterday regarding my book – “does anyone know how big the bulk orders are and where they might be coming from?” – we asked this same question of the New York Times. We are not aware of any bulk orders of any kind, certainly not anything resembling the standard tactics of right-wing groups to purchase enormous numbers of Regnery books and sell them at a loss in order to ensure that those books end up on best-seller lists.
No organizations have bought How Would a Patriot Act? in bulk. The only “bulk orders” which the Times could possibly be referring to is that many of my blog readers purchased numerous copies from Amazon when it was first available for pre-order – 10, 25, and in one case, 100 — in order to distribute to Senators, Representatives, etc. Although each order counted as only one order for Amazon purposes, my guess is that they reported it to the Times as containing “bulk orders.” The only other possibility is that a few professors have advised us that they are purchasing the book for use in their curriculum in the Fall, and have purchased between 25-50 books.
Other than that, there are no “bulk orders” that we are aware of. The manipulation of best-seller lists is a staple of the Right – as I assume you know, books are commonly bought by the thousands and then appear for sale for .99 on right-wing book clubs. Nothing like that has happened with my book, which I hope you will note.
I will also note that the book appeared last week on the Washington Post’s bestseller list at #10 — which is for area brick-and-mortar stores only — with no notation…
On the issue of bulk orders, and Greenwald’s accusation that conservatives manipulate bestseller lists, I would point to a portion of a New York Times article, published in October 2003, which discussed the paper’s use of a dagger symbol to indicate reports of bulk sales:
It’s true that during its long run on the list this summer, [Ann Coulter’s] book “Treason” appeared with a dagger each week. And though the hardcover edition of “Slander” made the list for 15 weeks last year with no dagger, the paperback edition currently carries the icon, as do two conservative titles on the hardcover list.
But then the liberal Michael Moore’s book “Stupid White Men,” a best seller for 37 weeks last year, bore a dagger on four of those weeks, as did [Jim Hightower’s “Thieves in High Places”] last month.

Byron whines, “The other guy did it too? C’mon, the other guy started it”. How old is he? Four? Pathetic.
Hey Byron, how about “I’m sorry.” A**hole.
Why the big gooper backlash against illegal immigration?
The children of today’s illegals will be (are) citizens- and they will vote- and they will vote dem.
That’s the issue- the whole issue- and nothing but the issue.
Bout time for dem pundits to lay off Ticky Dicky and Rummy and lay some ink on Condi. We’re gonna be seeing THAT lyin weasel 24/7 from here on out- and no one yet has had the good sense to attack her.
Why the big gooper backlash against illegal immigration?
Because they are small, venal, scared, angry, embittered, hateful people — demonization of the “other” is what gives meaning to their lives.

The General escalates!
I think there is a pervasive sense of unease just below the surface in the populace, even those with no political awareness. 5% infation with -1% wage growth takes its toll over the years.
I remember the long lines of the grim-faced that November morning in 1980 and I knew we were done for. Now is the turn about.
And let’s hold the Dems feet to the fire. Cut out earmarks and other vile practices that have totally displaced the deliberative formulation of policy. We need a remedial foreign policy, a revised tax structure that values work as much as capital and a manhattan project level commitment to energy conservation and renewables, starting 5 years ago…
RW,
Have you seen the Republican “make-a-wish” stories that pin their hopes on a great shift among Black voters to the Republican Party?
Whooo—if that is their last hope, they are indeed in dire straits…
Their universe is shrinking and now they can only hope to gin up a dwindling base with issues that fewer and fewer people could give one shit about….

Heh,just heard Glenn G on the radio, and now Jane,it’s Mother Jones news on Air America via XM.You both sound great.
Nifty.
Amen, knuckledragger 139, and same-same as to healthcare and education. Need us some great Cabinet-makers, is whut!
Saw this on DU and wanted to post it. Good reminder again of what kind of guy Al Gore is.

When I think of where America would be if we had him as President the last six years instead of Bush ….. Grrrr, frikkin MSM.
rwcole — the restore Bush’s image campaign seems to be based in part on showing he listens to the two women who are still trusted by a lot more than Bush’s JAR — his wife and his Sec of State. Remember the story this week, speculating about the more contrite Bush? — the story claimed it was the First Lady asking Bush why he said those “unsophisticated” remarks, like “bring it on.” Note we’re not hearing a lot about what mom-Barbara Bush says to her son. Bush is clinging to whatever skirts he can that aren’t drenched in mud.

If we can get the techies on this board to get your third paragraph implanted into candidates for the next couple of elections, we’ll be halfway home.
And to return to Christy’s post, the truly sad part of Lee Atwater’s legacy (”Create chaos, then swim through it.”) is that we’re nowhere near living through the next-order effects, and the guy’s been dead for years already.
-sigh- The Rovian talking points have taken on a life of their own. Now they go unchallenged, even when they show up in ‘liberal’ pieces.
Demonize the camel-jockeys. Makes them easier to kill. Muslims have three eyes and six-inch fangs and they eat babies alive.
Bullshit, says I. I stopped reading here. This paragraph is so, so wrong I can’t imagine how the rest of the piece could cantain anything of value.
Do we on the left really want to take the position that Big Brother is not showing sufficiant hatred for Emmanuel Goldstein?

Dunno if cbl feels better, al-Scooter, but I sure do — thanks. Love me some Jesus’ General!
The developed spin story will be the Clusterfuck has impecable instincts about people- and that Condi was always his own personal choice. Condi and Clusterfuck were temporarily mesmerized with the arguments of Rummy and Ticky Dicky- but deep in their hearts they always had doubts. Now Condi is coming to the fore- and the TRUE Clusterfuck adminstration- led by the truth as their God has given them to know the truth- is finally arriving- the true Clusterfuck philosophy of a better world is being born- midwifed by a slender black woman who prays daily for her country and her president.
If you aren’t sick yet- just wait.

al-scootah,
your mention of Lee “Bad Brain” Atwater has caused me to reflexively douse myself with protective mojo potion to ward of the shadow of e-ville.
And Christy, your very last sentence is the biggest question of all – What have they been doing these last 5 years that we don’t know about yet?
That’s what really worries me. We may never find out. They made the truth illegal sometime in ‘03.
Knuckledragger- that’s a keeper. Great post!
al-Scooter—thanks for the link to the General.

I’ll be at Ykos but I’m not an on camera guy. I’m a movement builder, behind the scenes, talent spotter, leadership developer and institution builder type. I’ll be around for anyone who wants to chat but don’t expect me to be making a splash.
Speaking of splash, I’ll bring a bathing suit, but will focus my time on getting to know people, movement building, quiet conversations, etc. See my definition of my role above.
These bastards are spread out in every district in this country and in charge of elections in every district. Every one of these thugs have something to hide and Bushco has the video for safe keeping. They are chicken hawk cowards afraid of the threats to their families and nobody to turn to. Politicians love their families and follow orders and without their families who would pose in the pictures with them in their campaigns?
Where are the men in this country and why can’t they get together and face the school yard bully as one? Hoi polloi, we are all going to be very devastated if we lose the next election.
If bloggers are the only voices standing in the way of the Dick Tater, how much longer will it be before bloggers are dealt with in the name of porn and national security.
MSM even have all of us believing that Bush is at 38% or even 21%. There are only 10,000 people on the planet that, if polled, would still back Bush. And while we blog and the world turns, they are building churches all around the country so that in the name of the lord, the churches can double as voting stations.
Bush’s dream is for many more catastrophies to hit the citizens of this country. His dream is to get rid of fancy American workers with their thirst for health care and luxuries like public schools and efficient levees and soldiers who demand bullit proof vests and replace them with migrants who agree to vote Republican in exchange for entry into America and a job that Americans don’t want because the pay sucks and as poor as they are they know that working for low wages means they are still going to be living in the street so why pick fruit for 11 hours. Like their employers, American workers also have a bottom line.

my best friend from elementary and high school will talk to me only about non-political matters. we visited each other about 12 years ago for the first time since the sixties and had a great time. now he avoids the possibility of meeting up again. it’s sad but true. my brother and his wife have distinctly different views than i have but we skirt around our differences. so be it. the crisis of our country is too important to let lesser matters interfere.
jim s(#117): your words are defeatist. you must be willing to fight every step of the way, no matter what the odds are. if you don’t we will fail.
cancer cures (#120): if we had the truly radical and, as you describe them, sabateurs, the possibilities for change would be lessened. these types would just provide the kind of fuel for raising voters’ fear level in such a way that the republicans could profit from it.
you’re right about the need to vote in ‘06. it’s crucial.

Goopers know that if the focus ever gets off the “war on terror” and illegal immigration- and gets onto domestic issues- they’re fucked. At the moment, events are keeping “their issues” front and center. Goopers would rather discuss news about Iraq- even if it’s bad- than the flatness of the average american worker’s takehome pay, the growth in the expense of medical care, the dramatic increase in the percentage of the uninsured, the spike in energy costs, and the irresponsible increases in deficits.
But ya can’t ride the same horse forever. This one’s coming up lame.

The japanese have a saying: you must soften the ground before you pull the weeds. This post clearly demonstrates that the republicans have softened the ground. But if we just harp on the past, focus only on their awful failures, and do not provide a clear outline for a plan of action going forward, pulling the weeds so to speak, then we are not going to get the voter turnout that we need to take our counrty back. We now need to focus on what WE are going to do to. That they failed is clear. What are we going to do better?
Republicans only care about republicans.
Democrats care about the republic
Haven’t read anything on this page yet, but I can tell you just looking at that photo reeks of the only flag desecration that matters to me. Has Doktor Gorilla seen this.
Hypocrisy, anyone?
D.Mason: I do not want my co-worker to die in his attic. How can he wait for Fema to come to replace his roof when he hasn’t paid enough taxes for Fema to exist.
Thanks for taking my text out of context. I repeat that I DO NOT WANT MY CO-WORKER TO DIE IN AN ATTIC. However, if in fact the hurricane comes before the election, he will be catered to and the checks will be cut. But, if the hurricane comes after November, well, a couple of months waiting for a roof may be an eye-opening experience. Because no matter how much tax cuts you have in your pocket, you still can’t flush your toilet and you can’t have a scotch on the rocks after three days and that new generator you bought like gas but the pumps are down at the gas station and maybe, just maybe, he will come to believe that shoe shopping and playing guitars are not proper behavior for the politician that you voted for.
Why don’t you name me three things that George Bush has done for the people of this country, with the power of the House and the Senate at his disposal. I dare you.
…for those of us who HAVE wondered (and worried) what has been going on in the past few years behind our backs in the Rove/Bush back room, we may be finding out a bit of it in the next two weeks…fasten your seatbelt and pull down the oxygen mask…
The Marriage Amendment thingy isn’t really targeted at gays so much as it is trying to preserve the subsidy that married men get from us single people to suppport their stay-at-home wives. Yup, go ahead singles out there. Get out your 2005 turbo tax return and change your filing staus from single to Married Filing Jointly. Isn’t that eye-opening? MY tax return just doubled. Without any dependents. If you have the luxury of a stay at home wife, ie chief cook and bottle washer, you get a generous tax subsidy- from all of us single, divorced with children and gay people out there. Yep, my single head-of-household status gets me only half of the same tax return as my married male counterpart. AND I pay into social Security but can’t pass my portion onto anyone when I die unlike Joe Bag-O-Donuts whose widow gets his benefit. She never has to work a day in her life.
Personally, I think we should all be a little incensed about this. The world is not a cheaper place to live as a single person and I am sick and tired of supporting traditionalists who then turn around and snub us with their holier-than-thou attitudes because they have a license to have sex. We work very hard all our lives to get less in compensation and then they have the nerve to try to solidify this unequal arrangement with a fucking amendment.
I have a warning for these idiots: there are more and more single people out there and this arrangement is not going to last forever especially if you assholes keep shoving our faces in it. Pretty soon, we are going to want to level the playing field. You want fairness in taxation? You’re going to get it someday. If you want your widows to be able to live the rest of their lives above water, back off!
So can anyone supply the original source of that flag-signing photo? I hope it is not just a hoax shot from that whitehouse.org parody site. A wingnut “friend” of mine is balking at its authenticity.
MadLib — Here’s the original photographer info:
Photo: AP Photo/Charles Dharapak
I’m sorry, I forgot to note the date on the article. It was on Yahoo, but it’s no longer there. If I dig up the original from somewhere, I’ll post the info for you. But this was a wire photo that went along with an AP article when it was published.
Thanks Christy! I just want to nail down the authenticity so my friend can move on to the next level of her retorts such as, “Clinton did it too..” or “There is a big difference between the President signing a flag and burning it…”
etc. etc. (That is, if we can first get beyond arguing about the nature of reality and all photos being suspect in the digital age)
Here’s a link to the WaPo article featuring the flag-signing: Not Up to Code? Embellishing the Flag, Then the Web Site. The money quote from the article:
The event was in Livonia, Michigan on July 24, 2003.
What about purses and scarves made out of flags? According to the Flag Law it is.
A campaign contributor to the Republicans sells his merchandise at the conventions and on his website. Why does Mr. Alcox hate America by selling American Flag tote bags?
http://www.republicanmarket.com/store/home
And why does Mr. Alcox also own the website
http://www.democratmall.com/store/home , although it doesn’t look like he is really selling anything there.
Maybe Mr. Alcox can come up with a nice patriotic sand bag for Condi to tote when the next hurricane comes.
_______snip
Jonathan Alcox of Orlando, Fla., thinks he knows how to bring men to the party. At the convention, he was recruiting models for a 2006 Republican Women Calendar he hopes to produce.
“Swimsuits are not necessary, but encouraged,” his promotional flyer said. It also offered tips for interested models: “Wrap yourself in the US flag” or “Cuddle a stuffed elephant.”
“I’ve got three signed up already. If I can get the right girls here or at the Young Republican convention next month, it will be a go,” he said.
Califlander at 175 — excellent! Thanks so much for digging that up — I’m going to update above and put in that link. Gracias!

There might be 2006 elections. If the thugs don’t win, then they will stage another 9/11, and drag most of us off to concentration camps. …no one will read this at this late date but I would just like to say to GOLDBERRY that as a person who was FORCED to get married in order not to be prosecuted by the IRS (just so you know I am not a stay at home wife-god forbid) that I do NOT agree with you assessment of the stay at home wives aspect….though some of what you say is accurate please be advised that some women actually work harder at home than the average working Joe (you?) so please be careful how you phrase your hostility…perhaps you should get one – a stay at home wife- you might feel better.

Thanks
I have alot more to add to the Plame Calendar. I agree, it’s easier for me to see how it all played out if I can “see” it laid out. Especially the weeks just before the leak and 10/03 when the investigation began.
“And I hope it gets your blood flowing as well.”
Well, Christy, flowing and maybe boiling as well.
All this crap about the Founders and Founding Fathers. Do you mean the European invaders, the Conquistadors, the same blood lines that flow through Bush? Do you mean the Founders of the invasion, extermination and occupation of the western hemisphere? Those Founders, Christy?
Feeling a little proud of your whiteness? Talked to an Indian lately? Heard about Bear Butte, a sacred site for many generations for many tribes? Where “entrepreneurs”, “ownership society” want to open a biker bar, called Sacred Ground to service the Sturgis invasion? The USA, a Green Zone for white-euros? Go ask an Indian what they think. Go read an Iraqi blog and read what they think. Or the Intifada diaries to read what the Palestinians think of the US- Israeli terrorism. Spare us the Founding Fathers crap. If your skin was brown and not lily white, you wouldn’t be trumpeting any of this patriotic rubbish of Founding Fathers. Easy to do from your white perch of privilege. Maybe a two week time out with Crazy Horse, Malcolm X, Eldrige Cleaver, Sitting Bull, Mumia Abu Jamaal might shed some rainbow light on the blinding white of the Founding Fathers.
Isn’t signing the flag an act of desecration?
Brilliant and inspiring post. Thanks Christy.
