So, after two weeks of no Democrats on the show, Russert decides to go with Joe Biden today.

So, now, after three weeks of no Democrats on the show…

…sorry. I’ve been looking for a good cheap-shot opening all day.

Right on, Alison. This leaky Canadian border stuff is a myth the US right wing started with right after 9-11, when they went on for years about how several of the terrorists had entered the US through Canada — actually not one of them had.

Besides: this group in Toronto was made up of Canadian citizens targetting Canadian institutions, taking inspiration from global militant Muslim anger with US foreign policy (eh?). And it sounds to me like they were taking advice from two guys in Georgia.

Building walls and blocking borders is beside the point anyway…

This meme about the Canadian borders vs the Mexican borders has got to stop!!!

Canadians recognize that the southern border issues are all about race and class, and that these issues are not present on the northern border.

However, the right answer is NOT worrying about Canada. Oy vey! Canadian cops break up a terrorist cell before it acts and this is a reason to slam the gates closed?!

[…] HT to a commenter from firedog lake. I was just checking the lefty blogs Ace of Spades linked to yesterday to see if any of them had mentioned the arrest of 17 terrorist suspects yesterday in Toronto. The her credit the Jane Hamsher had this to say half way down her post: A huge thank you to the agents involved in this investigation — great work! According to the sketchy news reports thus far, it looks like they were building the same sort of bomb that McVeigh used in Oklahoma — thank goodness they were apprehended before anyone was hurt.

I find my hope in my grandson of 15 months - his life is the future and I’ll move heaven and earth to ensure that the world he inherits is better than the one I was born to in 1944.

My second source of hope lies in the wide proliferation of female voices, especially in blogs like this one. It warms my heart that the feminist battles we fought in the 70’s has given rise to a generation that takes female political participation for granted.

The women of Firedoglake take my breath away with their insights, their passion and their intelligence. (Note: if there are any males in the FDL lineup, you’re so cool I assumed you were women. ;-)

Our Canadian borders are going through big changes. A five minute wait in the past is now one and a half to two hours. You have to have picture ID. Passports will be required in ‘07. We get a lot of tourism from Canada. Reps. from unlikely places like Myrtle Beach S.C. are upset. They have a new conservative PM. Their budget surplus is being eaten up for the war on terror. Social programs have to take a back seat. New PM Harper goes around in psuedo military outfits like Bush. Hates the press. Sound familiar? I live on the border and get Canadian News.

Our Canadian borders are changing quickly. About as fast as Canada …they have a very conservative PM now. Overnight their budget surplus is being spent..social programs take a back seat to terroism. The new PM goes around in psuedo military outfits. You have to have picture ID at the border…passports are due in ‘07…even checking out iris scans. We get a lot of tourists from Canada. People also work on each side of the border. A five minute wait at the border is history. Now it’s 1 and a half to two hours. Reps. are complaining from places like Myrtle Beach S.C….Hotels and the tourist industry is already hurt by gas prices. Bushco won’t be happy until every possible way to earn a living is gone.

I just finished the first chapter of Glenn Greenwald’s book and realized how similar we are. Both lawyers, both were rather apolitical. However, like Glenn, I’ve watched with increasingly dismay as the Bush administration tramples on the Constitution and principals upon which this nation was founded. Blogs like this one, Think Progress, Daily Kos and Amerciablog have not only kept me far better informed and knowledgable than the MSM, but have driven me to become more involved. I’ve donated $$ to campaigns (Lamont, Busby) and written letters to my congress persons as well as to the editors of various news outlets.

There must be many like us — and the wider our message and hope can cast its net — the mmore we can restore our country. I am optimistic that democracy will prevail. MR. SMITH GOES TO WASHINGTON was on last night on Turner, and it was inspiring to watch yet again Jimmy Stewart take on the political machine.

Jay at 85

So well said! I was not even engaged enough to expose myself enough to send my BS detector in to overdrive. I voted for that man in 2000, God help me. I always was puzzled by the people who were so passionate, the determined as you described them. 9/11 and the motherhood that followed shortly after opened my eyes and my heart. His proposed federal ban on gay marriage sickened me for good. I can hardly bear him now. I can hardly bear my old vote, the lever I pulled. I love how you put it (and now I get to play with blockquote… please God I do not mess this up):

These are the people, the true liberals, that give me hope. I am proud to join their ranks.
