One week from today there will be several battles for the heart and soul of the Democratic Party. In addition to the Tester/Morrison race in Montana and Jay McNerney's battle for CA-11, we also have Jane Harman fighting in an increasingly contentious race to keep her seat in CA-60.
Harman is the Democratic incumbent from a safe Los Angeles seat who once proudly boasted that she is "the best Republican in the Democratic Party." Marcy Winograd is the real Democrat trying to oust her. It's another California race, and it's come crashing into the collective political consciousness in recent days.
This is a genuine insurgent campaign by progressive activist Marcy Winograd, a serious challenge -- if not an affront -- to entrenched Establishment Democrat Jane Harman (CA-36). This is like a smaller version of Ned Lamont's valiant campaign to dislodge Bush's favorite Democrat, Joe Lieberman in Connecticut. And unless you're a Zell Miller/Joe Lieberman type of make-believe Democrat, Jane Harman is probably not someone you want to see re-elected to Congress from the safely blue seat which runs from San Pedro to Redondo Beach to Venice.
Although Joe Lieberman might debate her on her claim to be the best Republican in the Democratic Party, her voting record is even more reactionary and more rubber-stamp Bush than even his. The multi-millionaire Harman is a hawk on Iraq and supports Bush on the disastrous occupation. Not coincidentally, almost every one of her big campaign contrbutors are arms merchants. She voted for the Constitution-shredding "Patriot Act" twice (she was one of just two House Democrats to back the administration’s efforts to monitor the records of public libraries when the Patriot Act came up for reauthorization) and she was one of only four Democrats briefed on Bush's illegal warrantless domestic spying program. (Tellingly, when that program was finally revealed by the NEW YORK TIMES, Harman expressed outrage... not at the Bush Regime, of course, but at the TIMES, for making the American people aware of what she, Bush and other anti-democratic traitors were doing in secret.)
Let me repeat, this is a safe Democratic seat, gerrymandered by Democrats for a Democrat. Bush got his wimpy ass kicked by Kerry 60/40 in 2004 and the Republicans, perfectly content to keep their pal Harman in the seat, have a pathetic challenger sacrificial lamb named Brian Gibson who hasn't even bothered to put up a website. (He naps a lot and is said to be hoping for a Republican tsunami of support for Bush to defeat all Democrats in California and place him in Congress.) Of course for us, there is a far more palatable way to get rid of the odious Harman.
Like Lamont's courageous challenge to Lieberman, Marcy Winograd has decided to offer Democrats from Venice to Torrance a real choice next Tuesday. Marcy has been endorsed by Ron Kovic, Tom Hayden, Gore Vidal, Ed Asner, Cindy Sheehan, Tim Goodrich, Jim Hightower, Mimi Kennedy, Ed Begley, Jr., Mike Farrell, Howard Zinn, Stanley Sheinbaum, Dan Ellsberg, Robert Greenwald and scores of local Democratic clubs, as well as the local Democracy for America and Progressive Democrats For America and the Western Region of the United Auto Workers, all people both fed up with Harman's right-of-center politics and impressed with Marcy's record as an effective advocate and activist.
After reading Marcy's diary at MyDD I decided to start an ACT BLUE page for her. What got me so excited? Here, take a look yourself:
"President of Progressive Democrats of Los Angeles, I am running to replace pro-war incumbent Jane Harman in California's 36th Congressional District. I run with a great sense of urgency, for we stand on the precipice of losing our democracy, of sinking a trillion-dollars into Iraq, of launching another war in Iran, of developing over 100 new nuclear bombs each year, and of shredding the Constitution. Everywhere I travel in the 36th District, a 30-mile urban stretch from San Pedro up through Venice and Mar Vista, a district where Democrats outnumber Republicans by 40,000 votes, people stop me in the street, in elevators, at meetings to ask, 'Where are the Democrats? Why aren't they speaking out?'"I assure them this Democrat, Marcy Winograd, is speaking out passionately, challenging the leadership of the Democratic Party to stand for the possibility of peace, for the rule of law, and for a brighter day when we reject pre-emptive war and, instead, engage the world community in tackling illiteracy, AIDS, and poverty, all the while engaging our own citizens in redefining security as universal affordable health care, quality education to close the achievement gap, and environmental protection to cool the threat of global warming.
"Some ask, 'Have you ever been elected to office?' and I tell them, 'No, isn't that great? I have no investment in the status quo, in the power of the Beltway.' Quite the contrary. I have spent the last three years on the ground, knee deep in the grassroots, organizing town hall forums and congressional lobby delegations to end the US occupation of Iraq.
"As Co-Founder of the California Election Protection Network, I have stood on the frontlines of the movement to ensure our votes are not gobbled up by hackable electronic voting machines and to keep a close eye on a Republican Secretary of State who waltzed into office with a Diebold lobbyist on his transition team.
"I am relentless, unstoppable, moved by a deep sense of conviction that the Bush agenda of eternal war is not the answer, and that it will take a groundswell of both outrage and hope to lead our nation back to sanity, to strengthen the Democratic Party, and to ensure the Party stands for something other than accommodation to those who rush to war and pledge allegiance to a false sense of patriotism.
"A former LA County Democrat of the Year, I managed a Democratic Club headquarters in Santa Monica during the 2004 election and helped launch Swing State Sisters, a group of women who traveled to Arizona and Florida to GOTV for Kerry. Never again will I support someone who waffles so treacherously on the question of war and peace, particularly when the war in question is wrapped in a package of lies by men who want to build a corporate empire via a sanitized notion of regime change.
"Now is the time for all of us to summon the activist, the humanitarian, and the visionary inside ourselves. Yes, we must invest our precious time and energy into taking back Congress, but not without a commitment to peace, to leaving this world a better place for our children and our children's children, not without seizing the reigns from leaders, be they Democrat or Republican, who climb into bed with war profiteers and then masquerade as advocates for the people.
"To those of you who remain skeptical, who argue that a grassroots activist cannot claim victory over a $550,000 six-term incumbent, the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee-- Jane Harman, the same woman who boasted she was flattered to be considered the best Republican in the Democratic Party, to those of you who say the people cannot prevail over entrenched power and influence, I say, 'Join the hundreds of volunteers walking precincts from Venice to San Pedro, stand with me and Cindy Sheehan and Daniel Ellsberg and Ron Kovic and Fernando Suarez del Solar and Ed Begley and Ed Asner and Howard Zinn and Jim Hightower and Mimi Kennedy and Tim Carpenter and Lila Garrett and feel the excitement in the air, and hark back to the day weeks ago when we blocked my opponent's endorsement by delegates to the Democratic Party or the day that the rank and file of the United Teachers of Los Angeles and the California Federation of Teachers, now mindful that their leadership had knee-jerked endorsed a pro-war incumbent, said NO, we reject this candidate, we rescind our endorsement. Yes, hark back to the day when the Sierra Club could not muster enough votes for Harman after hearing me, Marcy Winograd, speak of war and nuclear proliferation as the worst environmental crimes imaginable, and know that the time is ripe for change and that the people are hungry for real leadership and that Winograd for Congress will prevail. Be part of this movement electrifying the grassroots, contribute, endorse, volunteer, blog away. Join Winograd for Congress (winogradforcongress.com) as we sprint to the finish.'"
Meanwhile, the race has gained some attention because of Harman's unexpected difficulties from her own turf, Inside the Beltway. Democratic Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has reminded Harman that party rules on term limits for committee chairpersons (and, in this case, ranking members) on House committees, mean that her tenure on the House Intelligence Committee is ending. This is her power base and this is where her dereliction of duty has made her unfit for office.
Last week's L.A. WEEKLY pointed out:
[A]s ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee, Harman was privy to more of the administration’s case for the war than just about any Democrat on the Hill, though she cannot talk about the information — whether fact or fiction — the administration confided to her. Over the past two years, as the history of the administration’s refusal to consider any of the genuine intelligence about Iraq during the run-up to the war became glaringly obvious, Harman became a near regular on the Sunday talk shows, where she frequently voiced her objections — which were also the objections of the intelligence establishment — to the anti-empirical biases of the White House. But she had also been close to leading figures in the administration’s anti-empirical leadership — Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz in particular — before the war went so obviously bad. And even in recent months, her defense-intelligence mindset has led her to take positions at odds with large numbers of her Democratic colleagues.
Harman has been fighting like a mad dog to keep her Committee status-- even to the point of ignoring Winograd's challenge, a mistake that has cost her in the district. (Her latest tactic has been to lobby insider journalists-- you know, the regular suspects like Joe Klein-- to write articles about how indispensable she is and how unfit her successor, Alcee Hastings would be.) One congressman told the WEEKLY that “Having Joe Klein write up your point of view is not the most effective tactic to shape Pelosi’s thinking."
Funny how out-of-touch Harman is not to be able to figure that out herself. Of course, if she pulled her head out of Bush's ass, she probably wouldn't be as disliked as she is by members of her own caucus and by grassroots Democrats back home. And, although I recognize what a tough journey it is for a under-funded challenger to go up against a powerful incumbent, if anyone can do it, it is Marcy Winograd. Click here if you'd like to send Marcy some last minute support. And if you're in the neighborhood next weekend (as well as Monday and Tuesday), Marcy's campaign would love some more volunteers to help out.
LAST MINUTE ADDENDUM: IF YOU'RE IN THE O.C., MARK HULL-RICHTER NEEDS YOU
East of Marcy Winograd's district is CA-42, a suburban sprawl snaking down from Chino, Diamond Bar and Rowland Heights through Brea and Yorba Linda to Mission Viejo. It has the highest percentage of married people in the entire state and it is very white bread (although 40% of the people living there are Hispanic and Asian). In 2004 Bush carried the 42nd with 62%. The district is so hopelessly conservative that no Democrat bothered to even file to run against extreme right-wing nutcase, Gary Miller, who has one of the 10 most far right voting records in the entire Congress, more extreme than Tom DeLay or Roy Blunt and more extreme than any of the California Republican dead-enders like Richard Pombo, John Doolittle, Duncan Hunter, Jerry Lewis, although, like them, he is a crooked self-server who uses his congressional power to enrich himself at the public's expense. The only times Miller is not busy being a Bush rubber stamp is when Bush's (and DeLay's) positions aren't steeped in a high enough degree of sheer Wingnutery for him. Hate to see a kook like this get off without even having to defend his pro-war, pro-Big Business, anti-environment, anti-choice, anti-gay, anti-Labor, anti-education, anti-health care, anti-human positions?
The good news: a full-fledged progressive, a citizen-patriot, Mark Hull-Richter is running as a write-in candidate. A former Dennis Kucinich volunteer, Mark is campaigning on the kinds of themes you would expect from an enlightened progressive: supporting our troops by bringing them home from Iraq, reigning in the run-away presidency, putting an end to the culture of corruption in DC, restoring a sense of power balance between Big Business and common citizens, protecting civil rights and civil liberties for all Americans.
Mark needs 2,461 write-in votes next Tuesday to qualify to run against Miller. Do you know anyone in the district? The congressman before Miller, another right-wing crook, Jay Kim, who was convicted of taking hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes, was punished by voters for his unethical behavior (although I think he was still serving in Congress while under house arrest). Perhaps the conservative voters in the district won't wait for Miller to be hauled off to prison before ridding the Congress of his sorry ass. But you can't defeat someone with no one and Mark Hull-Richter is the best hope-- and only hope.

Howie you’re on fire this week. Thanks for keeping us posted on these local races — I don’t know if Winograd can pull it off but I sure hope she can and any heat she can apply to Harman’s posterior in the interim is most welcome.
Howie must have spent the weekend writing, what with his other bit at HuffPo today!
Just curious about your support for J McNerny instead of Steve Filson in the CA-11? I heard Wesley Clark endorse Filson at a breakfast in Oakland. Pombo has to go for certain.
Howie, can Winograd pull it off?
I’ll contribute if you can come up with some polling numbers that show me that she has a shot, but the fact that she is about to be replaced by Hastings anyway makes her a fairly low priority target for me — unless there’s a good shot that a real progressive can take the seat.
How in the hell did I not hear about this woman before now? I would have contributed WAY back when it mattered. Not that it doesn’t matter now, but money is like yeast—early donations are way better than later ones.
Thank god I am up here in northern california in Mike Thompson territory. What’s the status of Pombo? And who is running against him? And what are the odds?
- sofistic
Sounds like a good one to attack- and the Montana race mentioned in a previous post looks good as well (although I have to admit I know nothing about Montana Politics.
Just went to Marcy’s website- she looks good on the issues- and incidently- looks good even without issues. No polls shown on her website though- which may mean that she’s running way behind. It’s pretty late to make a difference- the election’s one week away.
CA-11
Filson/McNerney Democratic Primary
McCloskey/Pombo Republican Primary
I’m surprised rwcole didn’t remind us of the hottest national California race : Francine Busby! Rahm et al sent out a mailing today touting that contest . . .
Thanks for pointing this race out. Harman represents all that is bad in the Democratic Party. She has an open door policy with AIPAC, the Isreali lobby, whose close ties to the psychopaths in the white house have helped to get us in the mess we are in today, and she just loves those new gee whiz high tech death weapons that are rolling out of our factories and eventually will make it into the hands of crazies around the globe. But if you try to stop by as a constituent to have a conversation with her, to exercise some good old rebublic-based democracy? Well, you see, Jane is a very very important woman, too important for the likes of you! No, sorry buster, she is on the Intellegence panel, protecting all Americans! But here’s a crumb, meet with an aide! Venice Beach is just too big a place to meet a neighbor. Then, first comes the total agreement strategy of “Yes the Patriot Act is wrong!” “Yes, the war is terrible.” delivered with great thunder and admoniton. Show me anger! Show me sadness! It’s all a big screen test. and then…hello Congresswoman are you there? Is anyone there? Does anyone care? Well, Jane is a very busy woman, too much so to actually talk with one of her concerend taxpaying citizens… you are put off, then…lied to, and eventually just ignored (they seem to think we who truly love this country and it’s ideals will go away, disappear like the marine layer here, just something to ignore, keep smiling, everythings okay.)
With this attitude she would make a fine addition to old Tamany.
The 36th neeeds to kick her out. And I don’t feel sorry for her. I’m sure some death weapons merchant will hire her on as a lobbyist.
Go Marcy!
SHE IS A JANE LIEBERWOMAN.
A yes sir, Mr. president, type of Democrat.
Observes her oath of silence about the NSA, while commenting on National T.V. about how it’s being run illegally over her Oath of Office to faithfully defend, protect and preserve the Constitution.
A lieberWOman.
paul lukasiak — I’m under no illusions that Marcy Winograd is going to whip a well-financed incumbent like Harman next week. I asked Howie to do the post because I think it’s important both to keep the heat up on Harman, who has been doing a bit of backtracking on her Bush-loving of late, and because I don’t want to get caught in another Christine Cegelis/Tami Duckworth situation again. Not that the races are entirely similar, but still — putting out the word in support of progressive candidates is important, even if the odds are against them.
Now that Howie is covering these races for us — something that he does extremely well — hopefully we’ll start following them earlier, before it’s crunch time.
Howie, great post! Love the pic of Jane and Joe. Kind of says it all.
I am just thrilled to see Marcy get some play here in FDL. For what I think see my March 27 diary http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/3/27/6911/06535 at DKos.
Also Marcy’s website http://winogradforcongress.com/media.htm.
Paul Rosenberg and I were among the first to blog about her, and I can’t say how excited I am to see all the attention she’s getting.
Marcy is the real deal. She’ll be an outsanding Congresswoman.
Jane Harman is so conservative that she’s a proud member of the Blue Dog Democrats http://www.house.gov/cardoza/B.....dogs.shtml
(as opposed to Yellow Dog Democrats) — they’re mostly Southerners that haven’t quite gone over to the GOP . . .
“Let me repeat, this is a safe Democratic seat, gerrymandered by Democrats for a Democrat.”
No kidding! I just looked at the map. That’s my old stomping grounds (Hermosa Beach). The district completely surrounds but doesn’t include Palos Verdes Peninsula (heavily “R” probably).
Harman wrote a diary over at the Agonist not too long ago. I read it and sighed.
re: polling Harman/Winograd
Supposedly they’re running neck and neck according to polling done by Harman. How that information got to the Winograd camp is another story.
Tonight the West Los Angeles Democratic Club is hosting a debate between Harman and Winograd - except that Jane refuses to be on the stage with Marcy, refuses even to be in the building at the same time. Harman has also refused offers to debate on KPFK 90.7FM during various interviews Marcy has had on that station.
Go Marcy!
For those following the Busby/Bilray race in CA, found this in today’s San Jose Merc News:
http://www.mercurynews.com/mld.....king_news/
McCain cancels Bilbray event over immigration
SAN DIEGO - Arizona Sen. John McCain on Tuesday canceled an appearance for a Republican congressional candidate who has attacked his opponent for supporting McCain’s immigration bill.
McCain, R-Ariz., was scheduled to speak Wednesday at a breakfast fundraiser for Brian Bilbray, who is locked in a close runoff race with Democrat Francine Busby for the San Diego-area seat left vacant by disgraced former Rep. Randy “Duke” Cunningham. The event was expected to raise at least $65,000.
that Jane is Harman our democracy
fwiw, I have three Brown Dog Democrats and one Red Dog Democrat. The new puppies are Republicans still — they just haven’t opened their eyes yet!
But they’re all ” Pitbulls for Peace ! “
Click here if you’d like to send Marcy some last minute support.
Already done. Thanks for the update, Howie. Good luck to Tester, Winograd, Hull-Richter, and the other progressives facing elections next week.
ah, to live in Berkeley: Barbara Lee represents us well.
(makes me wonder, though, where she came doen on the Jefferson “defense” - anybody know?)
Jane @ 15
You may be right but dreamers can dream. She’s putting up a hell of a fight and has gotten further than I first thought she would. She has a lot of enthusiasm going for her here in the 36th. In any case I don’t think Marcy is ready to fade away. Next time she’ll have more experience, more staff, and hopefully more money. 2008 is not that far away, and yes, hopefully we’ll start earlier next time.
My dog says hello to your dog.
*ilson gave me an idea for a new moniker to describe Dems too scared to stand up for principle:
Yellow Puddle Democrats
I live in Jane Harman’s district. So far, I haven’t seen any signs (or pamphlets for that matter).
Jane has had some commercials on CNN, stating that the president shouldn’t be above the law, but I can’t recall any commercials for her challenger. That may help JH. I also haven’t seen any signs anywhere
On the negative side for JH, there is a tremendous chatter towards throwing all the bums out. I think that the primary will be painful for Harman, as there are few issues to bring out the voters (other than those that are pissed off).
Wilson–Well I figure that it’s too late to influence the race now- I talked it up some time ago. Looks like it’s going to be close. In exactly a week- I’ll be waiting for the polls to close with hope in my heart!
I heard Bibray today– total right wing party line gooper- and he’s advertised himself as a moderate.
He’s in favor of making illegal immigration a felony- in favor of the war in Iraq, etc. He’s speaks more intelligently than yer average gooper- but he’s stickin to the party line.
For those who do not live in the 36th district, there IS something brewing here. I live in the Mar Vista/Venice area and from the looks of front yards (campaign signs) you’d think Winograd was the only candidate. Jane Harman and her staff, both here and in Washington, seem to be thinking/acting as if they still had to deal with Palos Verdes, and its’ heavily Republican precincts, which no longer exist in the 36th.
Like others commenting here, I had no idea who Winograd was until a volunteer showed up at my doorstep. Until that day I was not up to date on Jane Harman, but I have been appalled at this administration for six years. Turns out we have another weak Democrat/GOP-enabler repping us in Washington which is equally appalling.
Jane Harman may very well have great poll numbers since you get the feeling here that her campaign is basically invisible.
A situation ripe for an upset.
Sharona (#5), I’ve written a lot about McNerney and if you want to get more facts, please check this out at Down With Tyranny. The short of it is– McNerney is the grassroots, progressive candidate with support from local activists, local Democratic organizations, local labor unions and the California State Democratic Party. Filson is the Inside the Beltway shill being pushed by the old era booses like Rahm Emanuel (and those seeking to curry favor with him). He has virtually no support in CA-11 and just lots of DCCC-directed funds. This is a classic case of local people vs Insider bossism. McNerney is clear on the issues (totally progressive on all of them) and Filson is either me-too-ing him or being fuzzy and squirrely. Clark’s endorsement doesn’t surprise me; it’s exactly what I’d expect.
punaise 22
I love it!
ralphbon 27 - LOL
Paul (#6), there is no polling in the district (except stuff done inside the campaigns which is probably not that valuable). People on the ground tell me there has been growing support fro Marcy. It would be a miracle if she pulls it off but if anyone can do it, she’s the one. THE ONLY WAY WE WILL EVER TAKE OUR COUNTRY BACK– not just from the the Bushes and Cheneys and DeLays, but from the Rahm Emanuels and other Big Business-supporting Democratic power-mongers– is by replacing fake Democrats like Harman and Lieberman with real ones like Ned Lamont and Marcy Winograd. And no one will do it for us.
Sofistic (#8), the latest polling shows that Jerry McNerney, the grassroots progressive in the San Joaquin Valley can beat Pombo. Environmentalists are committing millions (literally) to this crucial race to replace the man who wants to sell off the national parks.
I second what gtmaya says in #30.
A few days after hearing Marcy on Lila Garrett’s show on KPFK, a volunteer knocked on the door and the lawn sign was up. I didn’t know about the redistricting which cut out Palos Verdes. Until then I was willing to give Harman some leeway because of the more conservative parts of CA-36. No more!
There is a Winograd yard sign explosion in Venice and Mar Vista.
Morris Sheppard - cheers! how do some of these names make it politics, anyway?
- Conrad Burns his consituents
- Doolittle, the less the better
- Maria Cant - well? then step aside
etc.
OT - Desmond Dekker
One last humorous sendoff. Meant to post it the other night…
http://www.amiright.com/mishea.....aces.shtml
As a wannabe musician who needs to keep his day job, I’m fascinated by songs that catch fire, as did Dekker’s “The Israelites”, even though few can understand the lyrics. Another great example of this is Kyu Sakamoto’s 1963 hit “Ue O Muite Aruko”, marketed in the US as “Sukyaki”:
From: http://www.japanorama.com/kyuchan.html
“Against all odds, on 15 June 1963, the song ousted Leslie Gore’s It’s My Party to become the No. 1 popular song in the U.S.”
Turn up the heat and the fire burning under these so called Democrat’s butts. Thanks Howie for the update on this, and for what you do about informing people outside of local districts about fighting the good fight all across the country.
Morris Sheppard 26 — Oh I’m not pissing on anything. If I lived in her district I’d be knocking on doors next Tuesday. I have high hopes (and few expectations).
OK, Howie. Just bought Marcy a few more lawn signs. Anything to discomit a YPD (cf #27).
rwcole (#29), you are awesome and I have a feeling you will love reading the diary I wrote yesterday disagreeing with your point. It is not only not too late to help Francine, it is absoluetly crucial that we re-double our efforts in this last week– just like the Repugs will do.
And a little last minute good news. After Bilbray (a sleazy Republican lobbyist) has spent weeks bashing McCain’s immigration proposals, McCain just pulled out of a fund-raiser he had promised to do for him. (Ironically, Bilbray had taken out a fortune in GOP-financed TV ads to attack Francine for backing McCain’s reasonable approach on immigration.)
The people, not the bosses, should rule.
sheesh. discomfit
Suzanne at 4:58, I found this link.
http://www.mercurynews.com/mld.....701514.htm
I think this race is huge. The self serving Republican theme is that the Democrats don’t have a chance at anything, so why even bother. Changing that dynamic asap is like getting campaign money earlier.
ralphbon 41 — ;)
I’m glad to see this post! There’s a California progressive incumbant who needs support. Seems the Republicans are working hard to oust him and have spared no expense. I got this from Jim Hightower’s newsletter here in Texas and I’ve been trying to get the word out for him:
“I don’t often email my friends about helping an incumbent running for re-election, but this time I am making an exception. An important progressive leader whom I deeply value is in jeopardy and needs help.
San Diego Congressman Bob Filner is facing the toughest fight of his political life in a Democratic Primary on June 6th.
Filner has consistently fought for progressive values for almost 50 years %u2013 and because of this, he’s been targeted for political extinction by the special interests.
Back in 1961 Filner went to Mississippi to fight for civil rights as a Freedom Rider. As a result of his activism, Filner was jailed for several months. Instead of settling for a plea bargain, he stayed in jail and appealed his case all the way to the Supreme Court. The judgment rendered by the Supreme Court on Filner’s case was pivotal in turning the tide of the Civil Rights movement.
Filner has been a strong voice in Congress for the progressive agenda, consistently standing up when it matters. He led the fight in the House of Representatives against going to war in Iraq, and has been an outspoken critic of the President’s radical right wing attack on everything from Social Security to our Bill of Rights.
Bob is a champion for working folks, women, the environment, health care, and veterans (he’s just been appointed the Democratic leader of the House Veterans Committee, making his voice all the more important).
Now, the insurance giants, polluter interests, and other monied powers are out to eliminate him as a thorn in their side. They pulled off a Tom DeLay-style gerrymandering of Filner’s district and are pouring hundreds of thousands of dollars into the campaign of a corporate Democrat to try to oust him.
For the very reasons that the corporate interests want Bob out, we need to do all that we can do to keep him in there fighting for us! You and I can help %u2013 but we have to act fast. This primary is Tuesday June 6 %u2013 only 10 days away.
First, he needs money. Any amount that you can send will make a difference, whether its $10 or $1000. Even a dollar shows some love and is encouraging to the volunteers busting their butts for Bob’s election. Let’s inundate the campaign with contributions from the grassroots, standing for a guy who always stands with us.
Second, if you live in the area, please volunteer to help. If you know someone in the district or the area, contact them pronto and urge them to back Bob.
This is a time when grassroots really matter. Thanks for your help.

The YPDs need hydrants, not lawn signs
Howie - I saw a blurb on CNN earlier today talking about Duncan Hunter’s seat in CA-52 being on shaky ground, because of his proximity to the Dukestir…
Any news on that front? (hoping, hoping)
Jerry, not Jay, McNerney. He is the real deal (I donated to him last cycle). Pombo is one of the worst right wingers in the House, and Filson is just a DCCC bitch.
Go Jerry!
Howie Klein, Thanks for the additional information. It’s not my district but I’ll do what I can.
Howie– thanks so much for these posts. This is an extremely valuable service for those of us who would otherwise know little or nothing about the candidates that deserve our support.
A little love on the way to your picks and Jon Testor.
Wonderful news of my old neighborhood. Here’s some great news about my new neighborhood, the supposedly solidly GOP CA-45th!
“David Roth can win in the 45th” -More people are saying it.

Oh, Howie, if only you’d take up the cause of my guy, too:

Pretty, pretty please?
Bwahhhh. General Wes Clark just kicked Bill O’Reilly’s pathetic ass on Haiditha. Snort. Hope crooks and liars has it up later.
OT on Jefferson search controversy
I agree with talkingpointsmemo that these inaccurate stories about Reid amount to a smear. If these news outlets are notified of the problem and they do not change the stories, then I think it is intentional. And, just saying, I think a good old fashioned FDL WaPo Howelling is in order. I have sent some e-mails and I assume others have also to AP, CNN and MSNBC.
Now, note that
-the GOP Leadership is making a big fuss over a probably not big constitutional deal over a search of Democrats Rep’s office
–that conveniently pushes the story that GOP Abramoff style corruption is bipartisan
–that conveniently helps do a preemptive strike against future searches of GOPers offices
–the WH is suddenly leaking big controversy over principle on this, (which may or may not be staged, and may or may not be coordinated with GOP House leadership)
–ludicrous and patently dishonest and trumped up smear of Reid is published, and then made more dishonest an corrupt. If you doubt this last, read the CNN and MSNBC articles. If you know the the established facts, it will outrage you. I think unless there is something big going unreported, then Reid is being smeared
http://www.talkingpointsmemo.c.....008594.php
I don’t know how much of this is coordinated between the WH and GOP House leadership, or how much the fight in WH is real.
But there is very obviously a lot more than meets the eye here. I think the blog brigade should swing into action.
The fact that Jefferson has apparently been acting like a 100% knave and Dem leadership has not plan and is silent as usual is not helping, of course. I also agree with others that Jefferson needs to go asap.
OT - The Guardian has an interview with Gore:

Al Gore has made his sharpest attack yet on the George Bush presidency, describing the current US administration as “a renegade band of rightwing extremists”.
There is a palpable sense of excitement and energy and momentum in the 36th District for Marcy Winograd. Went to see “An Inconvenient Truth” Saturday night in Santa Monica and outside the theater was one of her volunteers with a huge placard comparing the “Real Democrat”, Marcy, with “B-2 Bomber” Jane (who actually wears that pin on her lapel).
If only Marcy can get enough money together to buy full-page ads with that “comparison” placard in the L.A. Weekly, the Argonaut, the Daily Breeze, and maybe even the Westside edition of the L. A. Times, I really do think she can pull off a “miracle” upset on June 6.
I wrote an e-mail to Marcy’s campaign last night suggesting just that and at 5:30 a. m. she herself e-mailed me back. (This woman goes to work early!)
Great idea! she said. All I need is the money from you and your friends. I just sent some. I hope that all you Firedoglakers out there and progressives across America will do the same…and more!
She really does stand a chance. Now’s our chance to help elect a Real Democrat in the 36th.

GO, MARCY, GO!
Jacqrat (#49), I’ve been watching Hunter almost as long as I’ve been watching his close colleague Randy “Duke” Cunningham. They– plus the 3rd mouseketeer, Jerry Lewis– were taking huge sums of money in the form of kickbacks from the same crooked Republican defense contractors. It is widely assumed that Brent Wilkes and Mitchell Wade have been giving Federal Investigators plenty of ammo against him. There hasn’t been a lot of news outside of the district because the 4 Democrats in the primary are all pretty good (no DCCC shill in the race). After there’s an official Democratic candidate, the race in the 52nd will heat up big time.
Re #55: forgot to add that according to talkingpointsmemo,
–GOP leadership is NOT making a fuss over probably big constitutional deal of questioning of Congressperson on leaks.
(The dog that didn’t bark)
That adds to my theory that there is much of the GOP howling is a show.
Ah yes. Jane Harman. The one who remained silent about Bush’s warrantless surveillance program for a year after being briefed on it, thereby gutting not only FISA but the Constitution:
I wonder if she can answer The Question:
Somehow, I don’t think she can. But I wish some FDLer who can go to her rallies would ask her about it…

OT to earlier thread: about that SCOTUS decision. NPR represented the twisted result as meaning public empolyees will not complain to their boss(es) but instead leak the info or speak out as a private citizen on their own time. Is this correct? I would expect retaliation from the employer even if the employee spoke out as a private citizen. That leaves “leaking” knowing you may have Abu G. on your tail. Am I understanding this correctly?

I was very excited to be able to contribute to Winograd’s campaign. I want us to deliver to Harman the rudest possible shock when the votes are counted next week–win or lose. As Democrats go, she’s vile.
In my dreams, the Lamont-Winograd-Busby triumvirate will win this time around. But if not this time, then next time. That I’m sure of; these folks won’t disappear.
Cozumel–same you, same me with Hermosa Beach. I miss it.

I think you are on to something. Lot’s of something.
Punaise,
First of all, I would like to apologise to you.The misunderstanding that I had last week was an absolute emberassment to me.I had not gone through and read the ‘Late Nite’ comments. If I had, I would have immediately recognized the referrence to the twelve thousand step reply to my weak assed post.Again, my apologies. It would seem that we both had an off day. I also need to apologise to Norske Flamethrower. I will do that when appropriate.
Audrey Yoeckel 47: Done. Thanks for the heads-up.
Audrey Yoechkel # 47 - Thank you for your post on Cong. Bob Filner - I was so moved by your words that I just called the 800 number and made a donation. The young volunteer, Beth, was simply thrilled and thanks you too! She can’t wait to visit fdl in the bargain. Beth confirmed it is a tight race but assured me hopes are high in the Filner camp.
Just back from the West Los Angeles Democratic Club’s candidates’ forum for the 36th Congressional District. Jane Harman went first and spent much time talking about challenging the Bush administration, oversight, protecting the Constitution, opposing military action against Iran… and endorsed an end to the U.S. occupation of Iraq! She seemed a little nervous, and very anxious to display her Democratic credentials. Polite to moderate response from the crowd.
Marcy Winograd was clearly the favorite of the crowd. Recalling some of her points (off the top of my head):
Her opponent had access to the NEI prior to the invasion of Iraq and knew of the shaky intelligence for the WMD claims, the congress person from CA-36 doesn’t represent just this district when they vote for war because war affects the entire country, she will bring the troops home from Iraq, she favors humanitarian aid to reconstruct Iraq and Afghanistan, she opposes development of nuclear weapons, she will introduce articles of impeachment when elected, she is for universal health care, she will fulfill her responsibilities for Congressional oversight.
Standing ovation from the crowd!

no harm, no foul! I don’t even recall the specifics, and I’d like to think I can roll with the punches anyway. whatever it was, I probably tee’d it up with some flippant remark (I’m working on that bad habit…no, really!).
it’s all good.
well there is one thing: I’ve been dying to write this for weeks, so this is as good a time as any i suppose -
nustedbuckles :~)
bustedknuckles - that was a weird day. too my great chagrin, I appear to have clumsily scared off a commenter named marily - haven’t seen her since. Are you out there, marily?
Jane @ 40
Actually I hope you didn’t take the doggy hello the wrong way. Anyhow, my dog is a female and doesn’t piss on anything very much, just sort of sniffs around in a friendly way. More of a belated get well card, I guess, dog to dog.
We’ll be doing everything we can here in the Marina. “High hopes (and few expectations)” sums it up pretty well, and is also a good way to go through life generally.
What was most visible to me in the audience was that Harman was all sticky foil and Winograd exuded a glow. I know this all sounds so Californian, but nonetheless it was palpable. It was in the air. This was the intersection of the old (Harman) and the new (Winograd.) And what is going to save us?
The audience was made up of DemParty loyalists and grassrooots organizers, but even the Loyalists seeemed moved by Marcy’s speaking. I just hope the media ends their blackout.
The future of the Democratic Party, the future of the nation must rely on a holistic vision. We are faced with so mnay problems, from the economy of corporate fiat to global warming. The blinders-on mentality is why I left the Dem Party to become a Green. There was no vision in the Dem party. Marcy Winograd makes me want to come back to the Democratic party.
In one sense I feel I am betraying my punk rock roots by trading my Green party affiliation for writing this but the future is something I WANT to experience. And the only way for that to happen is for the grassroots to displace the corporate whores of the Democrartic Party.
Howard are you listening?
Oh, by the way, I am going to write in Marcy for US Congressperson of the 36th District of California
I also went to the event in Venice. I think the two previous commenters have a good summary. Even though Harman did seem to be trying to appeal to the new Dems, she still stressed several times the point that “its a scary world out there” — and even threw out the old chestnut that we should give up a little liberty for security.
If I can swing it I’ll be working for Marcy Mon and Tues.
Even if it’s a long shot, she’s done a great job getting Harman to say things she wouldn’t otherwise say (Winograd commented — she spoke after Harman — that this was the first time she’d heard Harman come out for withdrawal — even if no timetable — and Harman was also much more circumspect on Iran — and got Harman to remove her B-2 pin!).
Punch line to the Venice WestLA DemsClub meeting…
Marcy Winograd picks up another endorsement, winning over 65% of the vote!
I’m believing!
I’m working for Marcy, too - I’m really excited about having a candidate like Marcy. She’s a real Democrat and I think people get that on a gut level.
You’ve got to be kidding me.
First, the 36th Congressional District is not a “safe” Democratic seat, no matter how many times Winograd and her supporters claim it is. As recently as 2003, in California’s gubernatorial recall election, 61% of the vote went to Republican candidates.
Second, Winograd has said “it’s time to build an opposition party.”
The hell it is. Folks, it is time to take back Congress. Because without a Democratic majority, we have no power. And without power, we will never be effective in opposing Bush’s relentless march to war.
So instead of giving your money or your time to replace one Democrat with another, how about helping a Democratic candidate who has a real shot at taking a Republican-held seat? I’m talking about Francine Busby, whos’s running neck and neck against Republican Brian Billbray for the San Diego seat “Duke” Cunningham had to vacate.
She needs help this weekend with phone banking. She also needs your monetary help. Give until it hurts.
http://www.busbyforcongress.com/
Howie, Howie, Howie, your facts are in error:
This is not a “safe” Democratic District. In the recent gubernatorial recall, Republicans garnered 61% of the vote (48% Schwartzenegger, 13% McClintock). The late Mike Gordon barely won his Assembly seat.
The RCCC has poured over $3 million dollars in the race to defeat Francine Busby. They will do the same here in an open seat.
Marcy Winograd has time and time again, failed to support Democrats, when they are the only Democrat in the race. She did not support or endorse Ted Lieu; she has failed, worst of all, to endorse Francine Busby, even when given the opportunity to do so as late as last night.
She is not a real Democrat as she claims, she does not care about taking back the House, and she does not understand the first step in withdrawing troops from Iraq, in protecting our civil rights, in impeaching President Bush is to gain control of Congress. Without control, there is no oversight, there is no subpoena power, there are no committee chairs to hold hearings. She is the wrong Democrat, at the wrong time, in the wrong race.
In that last election many Democrats voted for Schwarzeneggar for the same reason they would vote for Marcy…a need for change within the Democratic Party (and sorry Grey Davis was not it.) Anyone who thinks Venice and Marina del Rey would go Republican in a Congressional race is delusional. And there are many many people in Torrance who are upset with the business as usual Democrats too.
How many more wars must we fight until the Democrats get it? Will Iran do it? Syria? Kazakhstan? Venezuela? Or is this debate merely PR from the big businees sector that wants Harman in. Look, the days of greed are over, the days of mega-weapons and robotic death machines have to be ended. Let’s turn those engineers down at Lockheed Martin and Northrop onto the real problems that will affect us, solving global warming, designing low cost efficient photovoltaics, finding ways of recycling water to insure cleanliness because clean water will become a more and more crucial issue in the future.
Enough of the weapons loving, bush toadying, Exxon worshipping hypocrites: the Democratic party must change if it is to have any relevance in the 21st century American political landscape.
good work, howie. we at skippy international have been following this race closely for some time, as skippy international headquarters are located within the district in question.
we were especially pleased to hear gore vidal endorse marcy publicly on stage at the recent latimes festival of books (where our blog buddy, arianna huffington, chided gore for his support of hillary. “she’s very bright,” he said. “then go have dinner with her, don’t vote for her for president.”)
The registration statistics (Dems outnumber Reps by 40,000) and Presidential election results (59-Kerry, 40-Bush) tell the story of how safe this district is.
And that’s without mentioning the fact that it’s been given up on by Republicans. The Republican in the race had all of $52 in cash on hand and $46,850 in debt and appears to have raised absolutely no. Unless he’s got a fairy-godmother handy, he’d be hard-pressed to win even in a Republican district because nobody knows who he is!
Real Dems are active in electing Democrats. The most hard-working and effective of Real Dems even win awards from party organizations for their achievements. Real Dems get endorsements from Dem Clubs in their district. And that’s Marcy Winograd for you. If anybody’s entitled to call themselves a real Democrat - it’s her.
Local p.r. exec for hire, David Buchanan, sez:“This is not a “safe” Democratic District… The late Mike Gordon barely won his Assembly seat.”
Mr. Buchanan is snowing you. Please note:
A) CA-36 is not exactly the same as AD-53 (the district won by the late Mike Gordon in 2004). CA-36 includes a greater portion of liberal West L.A. than does AD-53, and CA-36 also includes the heavy union stronghold of San Pedro. AD-53 does not. CA-36 is a more liberal and more Democratic district than AD-53.
B) About that AD-53 race that Mr. Buchanan says was “barely won” by Democrat Mike Gordon… Mike Gordon beat the Republican by EIGHT (8) POINTS (50.4%-42.5%). An 8 point cushion counts as “barely won”?! Also, Mike Gordon’s *razor close* 8-point win in ‘04 came against a tough opponent: the longtime Mayor of Redondo Beach. By contrast, the GOP’s nominee for CA-36 this year is a political non-entity with no electoral experience, no campaign experience, no activist experience, no volunteer base, no website, no campaign staff, no campaign office, no campaign phone number, no campaign signage, no stationery, and no clue whatsoever.
For Mr. Buchanan to imply that, in November of ‘06, Marcy Winograd will be in electoral peril against a GOP cypher because, two years ago, a Democrat *eeked out* an 8 point win in a more conservative district against a tougher opponent is just plain insulting. It’s disingenuous at best, and wilfully misleading at worst.
This coming Tuesday, the Democrats of CA-36 really do have the opportunity to vote their hearts, and without fear. Don’t let hucksters like David Buchanan tell you otherwise.

Marta Evry (81) writes the Winograd campaign is misguided. She writes we need to stop Bush’s march to war. Bush marched to war with Jane Harman waving the flag, wearing her B-2 button. Jane Harman’s incompetance and lack of leadership is exactly what fuels the campaigns of people like Winograd and Lamont. This is not just about winning Congress. Democrats and Republicans alike have sold us out to corporate interests. As long as people like Jane Harman rep us in Washington the power you speak about winning back is empty. We all look forward to a Busby victory, but please do not talk down to us with your tired party line.
We don’t simply want a Democrat repping us, we want the best Democrat repping us.
I kid you not.
A quick reply to the East Bay resident who is smug that she is represented by Barbara Lee (I lived in Oakland for 25 years and worked on Barbara Lee’s campaign after Dellums resigned): Please note that Barbara Lee is endorsing Jane Harman!! Goes to show you that the best of them play stomach-turning politics all the time. I’m sure in her heart of hearts Barbara would rather be supporting Marcy, but she plays the Party game, too.
I know Marcy from my affiliation with Progressive Democrats of L.A. Marcy is incredibly bright, impeccably educated about a wide range of issues, amazingly connected, and a tireless leader. She is absolutely what we need in Congress. Go Marcy, go!!!!!
Some Clark backers upset by endorsement
By Carrie Sheffield
Retired Gen. Wesley Clark’s endorsement of Democratic congressional candidate Steve Filson on Monday has caused ripples within the ranks of former Clark volunteers who support Filson’s primary opponent, Jerry McNerney.
