There is no "War on Terror."
There is, however, a "war" on the U. S. Constitution.
After September 11, 2001, we’ve learned that we can take a punch and move on. We’ve faced far worse threats to our national survival in our history – the Civil War, the War of 1812, World War II to name a few – but we never abandoned our Constitution. Until now.
Terror is an emotion. Emotions are part of human nature and cannot be eradicated. A "War on Terror" is therefore a war on humanity. The Bush administration has exploited the fear and shock of a nation in the wake of a surprising and dramatic act of violence to whip national fear and paranoia into a constant boil. Why?
The evidence suggests the whole point has been to seize power and steal money. We are witnessing a creeping coup in the United States, the overthrow of the idea, promulgated by our founders and by writers like Tom Paine, that the "Law is King:"
But where says some is the king of America? I’ll tell you Friend, he reigns above, and doth not make havoc of mankind like the Royal of Britain. Yet that we may not appear to be defective even in earthly honors, let a day be solemnly set apart for proclaiming the charter; let it be brought forth placed on the divine law, the word of God; let a crown be placed thereon, by which the world may know, that so far as we approve of monarchy, that in America the law is king. For as in absolute governments the king is law, so in free countries the law ought to be king; and there ought to be no other. But lest any ill use should afterwards arise, let the crown at the conclusion of the ceremony be demolished, and scattered among the people whose right it is.
The Bush administration has explicitly denied this, claiming unlimited executive power under the president’s war powers against civilians and citizens. The president is not your "Commader in Chief" if you do not serve in the armed forces. On the contrary, he works for you, and he works for your representatives in the Congress.
There is no "War on Terror." There is only a war on the law, a conscious destruction of the U. S. Constitution. This is not the first time right wing interests have attempted to overthrow the U. S. government. An attempt was thwarted during the FDR administration. Then as now, America’s greatest enemies come from among the ranks of America’s ruling master class.
Bushco has enslaved Americans into a psychological reign of "War on Terror" that amounts to a criminal protection racket. We are told we must be afraid. That is, we are told we must live in terror. This is to protect us from. . . terror. Then, because we feel terrified, we must give up our freedom – freedom to write what we believe without fear of reprisal, freedom of due process and habeas corpus protection, freedom from secret intrusion into our private lives by government.
Today is Memorial Day. Today we remember countless patriots who died and fought for those freedoms our president tells us we must abandon. . . in the name of "freedom."
If there were really a "War on Terror," an emotion, Wes Craven would be hiring a lawyer: he scares people. The "War on Terror" is a sham. You know what changed after September 11th? We, the people of the United States, forgot how strong we are. We gave in to fear, when the only thing we should have feared was fear itself. Osama bin Laden wants you to be afraid. So does George Bush.
I know I’m not alone when I say, I’m an American and I’m not afraid. I know I’m going to die. I accept that I’m going to die, no problem. What I do not accept and will not accept is the notion that I must live as a slave to fear for the purposes of craven, cowardly men who, in their time, pissed the bed rather than fight an actual war, later to become powerful and use that power to line their pockets with my tax dollars. Give me liberty or give me death. Take your "terror" and shove it.
We went after the criminals who attacked us when we invaded Afghanistan, then quickly abandoned any pretense of being concerned with actual terrorists by fighting a ginned-up war of aggression against a tin-pot dictator for whom our chickenshit president and his buddies have always had a hard-on. If the U. S. were serious about thwarting terrorism or about minimizing our exposure to acts of violence designed to make us afraid, we would have rigorous port security and massive international goodwill and cooperation in the lawful identification of anarchic, violent networks. But we don’t have that. We have our sons and daughters fighting to maintain bases in the sand near oil fields, sacrificing their lives, bodies and minds for a pack of lies.
Ann Coulter and other right wing totalitarian cheerleaders like to talk about traitors to America. George Bush and the Republicans have betrayed America, the actual laws of America and the very idea of America. On Memorial Day, as we remember our sons and daughters who have sacrficed their lives in the blistering sands of Iraq, it does their memory due honor to point this out. Noble men and women fallen, their blood cries out for lawful justice.
In each of our minds lies the beginning of our return to freedom, so please, say it after me: "There is no ‘War on Terror.’"
It’s high time for America and Americans to remember our strength. We need not be afraid. When we surrender to fear, we lose our country, we lose our faith in each other, we lose our future and we lose our freedom. The best way to honor the sacrfices of our nation’s men and women killed in battle is to embrace, once again, that precious liberty.
It’s time to be America again.

love it. i wanna hear every Democratic candidate repeating this mantra over and over again. every time they get on the radio or TV or a magazine interview. this is what Americans are waiting to hear from their leaders.
Nice post pac
Agreed, but our Constitution has repeatedly been compromised in times of war or other hostilities- the Alien and Sedition Acts, Korematsu, McCarthy and the red scare. The lesson many of us draw from these incidents is that the compromise of our liberties actually undermines our cause, it doesn’t strengthen it.
But with the dingbat currently in charge, we have no reason to think he even knows of that history, let alone has learned from it. He’s providing the crowning example of how invading our civil liberties has made us less safe, not more. It has inflamed our society and sowed distrust. And it has made us think that the only way to be safe is to commit thousands of our young people to death and billions (trillions?) of dollars in ill-conceived foreign adventures. What a criminal waste of our country’s potential.
Bush just invoked the GWOT on sacred ground at Arlington Cemetery…for the millionth time. What a disaster.
He used September 11th yet again to justify everything.
Tyrant and liar and coward.

What May Come of the Haditha Massacre?
by Karen Kwiatkowski
Thanks Pach!
I’m glad to finally start to hear some folks recognize that “woe is me” ain’t particularly useful,…that Bush and his band of criminal brothers have been pushing this meme of “fear” to monopolize all else,…and that buying into this meme is to surrender to the twisted, evil wishes of not Osama, but of Rummy, Darth Cheney and their pet monkey, the Chimp!
We have a FAILED foreign policy that is hubris- laden and unengaged (except at the end of a gun or bomb) and defiant and hypocritical and most profoundly stoopid.
thanks, Pach– great post.
help – didn’t Abu testify before the Judiciary Committee that we are not officially at war? IIRC, he did, and then said it was important to make the distinction.
I thought I heard him say that – thinking it strange that he then continued, and continues, to base all his legal sophistry on the powers of a war-time president.
I’d like to see a “Sense of the Congress” that this nation is not at war with Iraq, nor with a tactic.
If the Oklahoma City bombing was a crime, then so was 9-11 – it was not a declaration of war.
I’ll say it again — “YeeHaw is not a foreign policy.” Great post, Pach — lots to think about here. Here’s hoping a whole hell of a lot of people start doing some thinking. And soon.
Excellent post Pach. Paine’s quote rings so true. Oh to have leaders that know how to speak with such eloquence again! What, my friends, has become of this great nation? My heart aches for her.
C’mon Gore! Run man, run!
Gore v2.008: Upgrade America Today!
Actually, it takes a lot of courage to try to take over the stablest government of the wealthiest nation in history. They’re evil, but courageous. Bush & Cheney have to win, and keep the evidence hidden, or, as Lincoln said, be “lighted down in . . . dishonor until the last generation.” Those two may never do time, but a lot of their minions would. And they know it.
There’s an old saying — “If you would strike the king, be sure to kill him.” Because if you don’t, you’re dead meat. Substitute “Constitution” for “King.” They’ve burned their ships and staked everything — ask Ken Lay — on victory.
Which makes them more desperate in the months and years to come.
—-
PS. If your blood is simmering over my “they’re courageous” comment, remember Bill Maher.
Hooray for Pachacutec. Threw that one right over the plate. We been sold a bill of goods that would embarrass a siding salesman. It’s time to call B.S. on the whole sorry lot of them.
For several years I have been saying that ‘Terorism’ has been used to supplant ‘Commuinism’ as the Republican scare tactic (they tried to use homosexuality and abortion first but found terrorism a better choice since they could combine patriotism with it).
Finally, Mr. Bush has directly stated this point in his recent comments (see speech referring to Truman).
I have held this same view ever since The War Against Terror (TWAT) was declared. When I heard Pat Roberts actually say on the Senate floor,”You don’t need any civil rights when you’re dead%u2026″ I wept for the loss of America.
With phony, sniveling cowards running this country we have seen the expiration of the dreams of democracy, and the death of America’s former greatness in the name of cowardice, spurred by the abject fear Bushco and his Republican Guard have fostered.
I deliberately have chosen to always refer to Bush’s war as the above TWAT (The War Against Terror) to try and shame people into remembering that there are no barbarian hordes at our shores; no country dares attack us with nukes, because Mutually Assured Destruction WORKS, so it shouldn’t make a damn bit of difference who has nukes; and every action taken by Bushco and his Republican Guard have inured to the detriment of our freedom and safety. Our Constitution, that vibrant “living document” that has served us so well is now tattered, torn, and its destruction under Bushco and his Republican Guard is almost complete.
So any cowards that believe in Bush’s TWAT, go cower under your beds, stay home on election day (you might be attacked by terrorists!), and let all true Americans who believe in America and who realize our strength vote people into office that are not quivering, yellow-bellied, boot-licking, ass-kissing, sycophantic suck-ups like those in congress and this administration now.
We ARE a strong nation with people of great fortitude that has been co-opted by the very worst amongst us.
Great post.
Onward, F, G and F!
Memorial Day – Texas style! Reminds me of a favorite Onion article-

Jewish Texans Commemorate Holocaust… Texas-Style!
February 12, 1997 | Issue 31•05
LUBBOCK, TX—The West Texas chapter of B’nai B’rith is holding a month-long series of events in remembrance of the Holocaust, commemorating the 20th century’s darkest hour the way they do everything… Texas-style!
Texas Jews rustle up some memorial grub.
“If we do not remember the past, we are doomed to repeat it,” said San Antonio Rabbi Leonard “Too Tall” Sussman at Sunday’s opening ceremony, laying a wreath before the Lone Star Of David in front of B’nai B’rith headquarters in Lubbock. “The world was silent, and in silence lies complicity. Never again, y’hear?”
Added Sussman, “Yee-haw!” He then lit the ceremonial Eternal Flame, over which a spit will be installed for Wednesday’s kosher steer cookout.
Among the highlights of Holocaust Hoedown ‘97: a Main Street parade featuring red, white and blue Texas blossoms spelling out “Don’t Mess With The Jews”; a special appearance by six-time Zionist calf-roping champion Barry Lowenstein; and daily double-bill showings of Schindler’s List and John Wayne’s True Grit.
“Have we learned the lessons of the Holocaust?” asked Deborah Teitelbaum, director of Dallas’ Museum of the Holocaust. “If the answer is yes, then how does one explain events in such places as Cambodia and Bosnia? What do we tell the orphaned child in Rwanda? And how ’bout them Cowboys!”
Bill @ 26…
Well said patriot. Well said.
AAHHH Pacha,
that Paine quote is hanging in our bathroom – we wanted it where everyone coming in to our home would see it
we remind anyone still supporting GWB that their beloved Ronald Reagan had 8 years of the Soviet military aimed at him, subs filled with nukes staring at us everyday and never once admonished Americans t/b afraid – usually gets ‘em thinking
Great post Pachacutec !
Yes, there is no war on Terror….that is the biggest con of all. We all fell for it…..now it’s time to regain our sanity. The enemy lies within and it is GW Bush and friends.
The neocons have for a while now been able to successfully spin/deny that we humans, like it or not, have a social contract. They believe the illusion that a man can be an island and it is very sad for all of us because it is ugly and unloving. It is convenient for the selfish man to believe he is the lone hunter living or dying by his wits and balls alone. It is a fantasy. Every man’s success includes countless others, a fact the Limbaughs and Coulters ignore in their tiny tunnel vision. They are so desperate to puff up their loud, vulgar, and puny egos – adrenaline is all they’ve got to feel alive. Reminds me of a movie with Rod Stieger where he pushes his hand down onto a sharp spike just to feel something. ( he played a man that was emotionally numb) A social contract of love does not have to mean a loss of individuality. It recognizes that we are not seperate on one level. It enhances the best kind of individuality. For the right wingers to scream “socialist!” or “communist” when decent people want to pass the hat ( government programs) to provide help for others is just an excuse for hate, laziness, and numbness. The Bartletts and the Bushes want to be comfortable with their selfishness and laugh at those who struggle when they see others suffer. They think they are tough but they’re not. Love is all that is real.
today the Preznit even trotted out at Arlington the hackneyed “fightin’ ‘em over there so we done have to fight ‘em here” chestnut… whatta crock!
Pach, I agree, and have felt this way for a long time. I believe that most real Americans feel this way. I believe that because these thugs own the media, they think they can convince us to be afraid through repetition…yet, we’re on to them now. I’m with you all. I won’t stop speaking.
War and the constitution have never gotten along well. Lincoln suspended habeus corpus as I recall. The japanese internment was a fear inspired move sanctioned by the supreme court that would never have passed constitutional muster in a non war environment.
we know all this. Yet every day the Dems step off their short bus and fail to act. Some see and hear the evil, some even speak out. But I see little action. I suspect we are without a paddle up up shit creek…
The commander of Fort Lewis in Washington state wrote an article in yesterday’s Seattle Times, touching on this same theme, that America should be very afraid of the enemy that is out there prepared to do harm to America. Lt. Gen. James Dubik warned that the intent of the enemy is the “eroding [of] our national will”. But the general was able to reassure America that “there are soldiers, Marines, airmen` and sailors who are fighting this very day and this very night to prevent the enemy from achieving its political and ideological aims”. He also warned that “in a conflict where the erosion of your will is a major goal of our enemy, you are a soldier as well”.
These words by General Dubkin could have been taken straight from a 1950s newsreel, warning of how America was in constant danger fron the Commies. The last words that I had quoted from the good general seems to be a not too subtle attempt by him to echo what Ari Fleischer and Rumsfeld had said in the past: “Watch what you say, watch what you do”. Any attempt to question the policies of the government wil not be tolerated. If your neighbor dares to challenge the policies of this administration, inform on him or her and report that person to Homeland Security.
Instead of more eternal vigilance concerning the ever present War on Terror, what this country needs is less flag waving, nationalism, and hysteria and more people wiling to adopt the slogan: Dissent is the highest form of patriotism.
markfromireland (17) — thanks for that link to Lt. Col Kwiatkowski (ret.). She tells it like it is; will patriots hear this call?
Pachacutec:
You mentioned that the blood shed by American soldiers in Iraq cries out for justice. This made me think of two things.
First, your reference to the blood of Abel is apt. (Adam and Eve’s children fought, and Cain killed Abel. God told Cain that Abel’s blood cries out against Cain and demands justice.) The ancient Israelites believed that blood shed on the ground actually cursed the ground and its inhabitants until that blood was requited. When a person is found slain between two villages, no murderer discovered, each town has to pay dearly to lift the curse from the ground.
Second, it occurs to me that an argument I have heard defending the Vietnam War and now this insane Iraq war, that we must stay because if we don’t the deaths of our soldiers have no meaning. However, you are correct that the meaning their deaths have is not to continue in a pointless, evil and destructive war — the meaning of their deaths is a cry out for justice — it obligates every one of us who hears that cry of the blood from the ground, to do something, to do a lot, to bring justice to the murderers, in this case, the Bush Administration.
OT
A good sign:
On a beautiful sunny saturday afternoon in New York City, the 5:40 pm showing of “An inconvenient truth” was sold out.
That was beautiful. And perfect for Memorial Day.
It’s impossible to steal this amount of money and resources without chaos, panic and fear. When the fear gets ratcheted up,people stop questioning what’s going on.When they even start questioning, more fear(which leads to hatred)and misinformation gets dumped our way,and it’s like the process of awakening has to start all over again.I think that’s why it’s taking so long for the public to get a clue, and why the right has dug their heels in so deeply-they’re the most scared and pitiful of all.
What people oughta be scared of is the economy crashing while a huge web of organized crime makes off with damned near everything. And I don’t just mean money and resources. If we’re fighting and angry and completely unable to trust each other, out of fear and frustration and hatred,it’s much easier for the wealthy and powerful to be fat and happy behind all their “security”.And Justice and Peace will never happen, ever.
It’s not that”it can’t happen here”,it IS happening here, and it has to stop.NOW.Every day that passes more damage occurs. We’ve been given no other choice but to fight back, with all we have. You can’t claim to be a Patriot and then sit back and allow the madness to continue. It’s either fight or run to a bunker and cry.I’ve cried enough in my life,it’s good catharsis, but it doesn’t change a thing.Besides,I’m too pissed off to be scared, lol. How DARE these bastards decide who’s life is more valuable and worthy?Where are their credentials to decide that? Well? I have yet to see one single reason why I should blindly trust Republicans,CEOs,or any other neocon enabler, not ONE.
Democracy isn’t something we have,it’s something we DO,and it’s past the time for the country to remember that again. We used to be taught it,now we’re encouraged and rewarded for being selfish, mean, destructively competitive, and hurting other people is even considered entertainment.I don’t think most people can even define civics and citizenship anymore, other than to say”I’m an American”.
Well shit, Pach, you sure nailed that one! For all CSPAN watchers, I have to point to a repeat this morning of a March 2 forum with Norman Mailer & his son John Buffalo Mailer. At 83 he is self admittedly deaf (but only to stupid questions I noticed) so he pretty well ran the hour. Of his many great analogies:
Missing from our national discourse after 9/11 was “Hey baby, suck it up!”
Having terorism in one’s life is not going away. Pay attention to the numbers, of the 3,000 killed on 9/11, look at the 40,000 killed on roadways, etc across America every year. Figure your chances and go out and live your life BUT TO GIVE AWAY A COUPLE OF HUNDRED YEARS OF LIFE WITH CIVIL LIBERTIES to overcome terrorism is just plain stupid.
Thanks for your post Pach, I only hope more Americans read it than play golf today.
Amen and well said, Pach.
It’s WOT alright, War OF Terror, and it’s aimed at the American Citizen.
everything flows from 9-11. I’m sure it’s just a coincidence.
Hey, Bill Arnett #26, stop dissing twats! A lot of us have them, y’know. I believe Bush’s is named Laura. *g*
On a more serious note, I wish someone in the Senate besides Russ Feingold would call Pat Roberts on his “civil liberties don’t do you any good if you’re dead” shit. The motto of New Hampshire is not “Live Free and You’ll Die.” If the Founders had had that attitude, our national anthem would be God Save the Queen. It is time, and past time, to take our country back, and Pach is right. We start by not being afraid.
Regarding our history, we have faced attempts to undermine our principles of government, and we have had our pockets picked by corruption. But I don’t think we’ve ever had as much of both as we do now with George the Turd (somebody else used this moniker in a recent post, and I’m stealing it, and encourage everyone to do the same).
Seems to me that the war in Iraq is running out of steam. Nothing is likely to happen this year- Bush is able to ride the “A new government will turn the corner” bullshit for the balance of 06. Next year is a different story. We’ll be in our fifth year of non-decisive combat and death. Americans will have had enough of the wishful thinking and false promises. It will be increasingly difficult to hold back the tide of americans who say “enough- if Iraqis want democracy- they’ll have to fight for it themselves.”
Bush will go to his fallback position- removing most american troops to heavily armed bases and engaging the “enemy” primarilly with air strikes.
Of course in the end, it’s about the oil- so we won’t EVER see a total withdrawal. We are likely to see the very confusing picture of a civil war going on with american planes bombing both sides and american troops sitting the thing out for the most part- guarding the oil fields.
I heard somewhere Bush doesn’t like all the ugliness on TeeVee.
Well, thanks to some roadside bombers, there are three CBS folks fewer to bring it to him; 2 dead, one in critical condition.
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories…..1815.shtml
Oh, Pachacutec, how I needed this! I just finished my Memorial Day post http://blogolodeon.blogspot.co…..l-day.html and was feeling pretty blue about things.
It’s too easy to give up, and I do want to stop giving up. Yes:
There is no war on terror.
There is no war on terror.
There is no war on terror.
But we won’t get home again just by clicking our heels together. In the immortal words of Jonathan Winters, “we’ve got to get organized.” Thank the gods for Firedoglake and other 21st century pamphleteers. I still don’t know if I believe in The American People anymore — but I want to.
This excellent essay deserves to be printed on the front page of every newspaper in America. And read by cranky Jack Cafferty on-air to a grimacing Blitzer. And probably, to reach the other 9/10 of TV viewers, presented and read by Brangelina during a commercial break in an American Idol episode.
Bravo!
Yeah Bush complains constantly about the scenes of death and killing on the teevee- only one problem with that- THERE ARE NO SUCH SCENES ON TEEVEE. The press is never around at the time one of the bombs goes off. Bush MADE THE WHOLE THING UP! Why? Beats the hell out of me!
“The president is not your “Commader in Chief” if you do not serve in the armed forces. On the contrary, he works for you, and he works for your representatives in the Congress.”
Very elegant and directly on point. This is but one of many gems in this post. A superb post Pach!!! Why does it take so much effort for our congresscritters to begin to realize what we here at FDL (and other blogs) have known all along? This administration is at “war” with its own citizens!
Good morning, kind folks.
I just want to extend my greetings to you wonderful people on this somber day. I really can’t think of anything to add to the comments already made. The only thought that crosses my mind is that Bush’s best hope for the judgment of history will be that he was a brain-damaged wreck who had literally lost his faculty for empathy and reflection, so that the greater blame lies on those close to him who manipulated his silly mind, and those further away who voted for him, knowing full well he was not up the grade.
“Of course the people don’t want war. But after all, it’s the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it’s always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it’s a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger.”
– Herman Goering at the Nuremberg trials
Hear Gore roar January 16, 2006 speech: (audio at http://www.dailykos.com/storyo…..235819/934 )
The founders of our country faced dire threats. If they failed in their endeavors, they would have been hung as traitors. The very existence of our country was at risk. Yet in the teeth of those dangers, they insisted on establishing the full Bill of Rights.
Is our Congress today in more danger than were their predecessors when the British army was marching on the Capitol?
(APPLAUSE)
Is the world more dangerous than when we faced an ideological enemy with tens of thousands of nuclear missiles ready to be launched on a moment’s notice to completely annihilate the country?
(APPLAUSE)
Is America really in more danger now than when we faced worldwide fascism on the march, when the last generation had to fight and win two world wars simultaneously?
It is simply an insult to those who came before us and sacrificed so much on our behalf to imply that we have more to be fearful of than they did.
(APPLAUSE)
And yet they faithfully protected our freedom and now it’s up to us to do the very same thing.
(APPLAUSE)
GORE: We have a duty as Americans to defend out citizens’ rights not only to life but also to liberty and the pursuit of happiness.
(APPLAUSE)
It is therefore vital in our current circumstances that immediate steps be taken to safeguard our Constitution against the present danger posed by the intrusive overreaching on the part of the executive branch and the president’s apparent belief that he need not live under the rule of law.
I endorse the words of Bob Barr when he said, and I quote, “The president has dared the American people to do something about it. For the sake of the Constitution, I hope they will.”
Sorry.. dont’ know how the DP happened. I do like seeing my comment highlighted though!
Bill @ 26 — I think you’ve given us a Democratic talking point:
Bush and Cheney couldn’t have done what they’ve done without their Republican Guard.
#23-
I disagree with Bushco having the quality of courage. Narcissism is devoid of courage, but contains an abundance of evil.
What fear. Like the fear that would cause a Republican Congressman to run into an elevator and call the police after hearing a “noise” that he “thought” was gunfire?
The subseqeunt hub-bub caused the total lockdown of the nations’ Capitol and caused one staffer to a Republican Congressman to get shipped off in an ambulance due to a “panic attack”?
Out nation has never looked stronger.
Maybe the Presidents spokesman, Tony Snow can break down into tears again while describing the hardships that the Bush family is going through as they bravely lead the nation in the “war on terrrrra”.

Rayne you’re welcome. Sharon @ 48. Two not one two journalists are dead Paul Douglas and James Brolan they were “embedded” and with a patrol “humvee” blown inot the air and landed upsidedown btw. War and the constitution have never gotten along well. Lincoln suspended habeus corpus as I recall.
The Constitution provides for the suspension of habeas corpus: Article I section 9 paragraph 2: The privilege of the writ of habeas corpus shall not be suspended, unless when in cases of rebellion or invasion the public safety may require it.
Pach – 60 — I would be honored!
Sharon, that story about the CBS reporters must be phony. The only “journalist” who leaves the comfort of a balcony in the Yellow Zone is Laura Ingraham.
Don’t buy the lefty propaganda, Iraq is like New York, only safer.

OT, and I don’t want to quote, but what is it about right wing men who can only engage Jane by making lewd suggestions? Are they all as stupid as Tacitus, and equally besotted with Jane?
Next time try flowers, guys.

Last paragraph, if you care to look.
I am just listening to MSNBC– at first the anchor face said it was the result of an IED.
Seconds, later she morphed it into a suicide bombing without missing a beat.
RIP.
We’ll never know– tis a war zone, over there.
“I’m an American and I’m not afraid.”
Let me add this: They cannot frighten me. They can only kill me.
It’s so damn ironic. We’ve got the swift boatin’, hypocrite, smirkin’, jerkin’, swaggerin’, murkin’, chicken hawk, draft avoidin’, Nam dodgen’ commando in chief, ginnin’ up his spiel in support of his illegal, murderous and totally immoral and phony war on terror. And on this most authentic holiday. This man has absolutely no shame. And he’s a war criminal to boot. To say our president is in-artful in his deception and full of baloney-brains, is an insult to all the baloney-brains the world over. Bush is a very, very cheap trick.
Frankly- thanks for the correction- I missed that.
O/T
Christy,
in the event you need a BWAAAHAA moment at some point today – possible spew warning – that quote in the 3rd paragraph – priceless

Note to Republicans:
“Don’t be afraid. I’m right here with you.”

AMEN!
This simple truth must be spoken and understood.
It is the thread which holds together the entirety of wrong.
There is no war on terror.
The laws against murder, kidnapping, theft and destruction of public property are sufficient.
Failures of execution do not justify expansion of poser.
In fact they should be viewed as a primary impediment to expansion of power.
Get behind us if you are frightened, we’ll lead the way.

Throughout the period of military rule, the Chilean Supreme Court lent legitimacy to Pinochet’s military regime through symbolic actions, public speeches, and through its resolutions.
This Kos diary I wrote almost six months ago is worth reading for those who fail to realize that the law is ultimately nothing more than a tool that can be adapted to serve those in power.
Some of those who didn’t leave Chile in time and ended up in unmarked graves were lawyers who thought the law would protect them.
The law is what men say it is. Your evil is my good.

Josh Marshall has a pretty cogent explanation for the Denny Hastert flap over the FBI search warrant:
With all the debate about the warrant executed on Rep. Jefferson’s office, let’s not forget the context in which this stink arose.
Earlier this month, we found out that the Duke Cunningham case was expanding and that the Duke case investigators were requesting documents from Congress as part of their probe into the roles of other members of Congress. The response from the Hill was, in so many words, ‘No, You’re asking for too much stuff.’
That response came with Denny Hastert’s seal of approval.
As the Times described the back and forth on May 16th …
Justice Department investigators and lawyers for the House of Representatives are wrangling over a request by the department for Congressional committee documents related to its expanding inquiry into the bribery scheme that involved former Representative Randy Cunningham, a Republican Congressional official said Monday.
The United States attorney’s office in San Diego has asked for copies of ”tens of thousands” of documents from the House Appropriations and Intelligence Committees, the official said, as part of its inquiry into whether Mr. Cunningham illegally influenced the process the committees use to designate money for military projects.
But lawyers for the Republican-controlled House rebuffed the request as unreasonably broad, the official said, and asked the United States attorney’s office for a shorter list.
And who’s in the crosshairs in this expanded Cunningham investigation? “Several members” of the House Appropriations Committee reported the Times back on May 12th. And, in particular, Rep. Jerry Lewis (R-CA), Chairman of the House Appropriations Committee.
Denny Hastert knows what’s coming down the pike. He’s taking the opportunity of the Jefferson search warrant to float this specious constitutional argument and clip the investigators’ wings on the most politically favorable terms.
cbl at 70 — Oh, I’m already on that for this afternoon. *g* Thanks for the heads up, though.
Florida Rep. Tom Feeney(R-phone company rate hike champion, big player in the computerized vote rigging software scandal per Bradblog) gave a brief memorial day speech. Here’s the meat of it: First attack on US shores since 1812 was Nine elva, fighting terror, defending our nation, spreading our freedom to Iraq and Afghanistan.
Its BS, but its a great theme for the rethugs. Its simple and easy. And it would be gauche flor anyone to raise hell at a Memorial Day service.
State rep Dorothy Hukill(R) was next. Surprisingly, she did not invoke Nine elva, but stuck with the memorial part and talked about her father’s ww2 service.
Hukill’s son, age 20, attends jr. college with plans to attend UF. I asked him if he plans to join the military. He was prepared for the question (His mother is up for reelection – he and his buddy wore Hukill t-shirts) and he said that he was considering the AF, in two years, after he finishes college. Then he scurried away, while inviting me to greet his mom. Pretty smart kid. I had asked him how he avoids the recruiters on campus. He tells them they have to wait two years. I’d guess that his momma coached him pretty good, being that the young fella would be attending a Mem. Day service with lots of vets around (who might ask him that).
The third and last speech was given by my atty friend who wore his Army Reserve uniform. It was a good democratic styled “rebuttal”, which included (in addition to a history of his Viet Nam and other mil. service):
questioning “patriotism” b/c people disagree, troops stretched thin, need help, sign up. “Support the troops” means sign up and encourage your friends and family members to do so. He said that the Am. military is being used like a “Swiss Army knife” to be taken out and used at will. Should be used only when necessary, after diplomacy has been exhausted.
He asked if we really enjoy being alone (in the GWOT) without the aid and respect of our allies.
Later, he asked me if anyone grumbled. I said no, I think they just weren’t listening much. Especially, Tom Feeney. Feeney appeared to be almost as bored as the Chimperor looks most of the time.
Well, this is depressing, though it’s an opinion piece.
Democrats want to give the party a back-bone, a NEO-CON, PRO-HAWK, Pro-Leiberman, ANTI-MOVE-ON.org backbone.
http://www.latimes.com/news/op…..t-opinions
Are these people the “centrists” that guy (sorry too lazy to look it up but it was in FDL comments the other day) was worried the dems were squeezing out if Leiberman is chucked?
Re commenter #36: ” Gen.
Could it be–just possibly–in the light of the military generals’ mini-coup, that Gen. Dubik could be subtly referring to the enemy within that is the subject of this thread? The military is none too happy with the current badministration, its phony, mismanaged war and illegal power grabs. Having grown up around the military, I believe that many are educated idealists (much like FDLers) who deeply love the US, so I can easily read the general’s statement as a purposeful general warning rather than as a political cliche.

Right on Pachacutec!
If no one is afraid Bush’s “War on terror” collapses.
Pach: It was a tall order, but you have done Tom Paine proud today.
This powerful piece deserves an audience far and wide, and I’ll be doing my small part by forwarding it to acquaintances today.
Rock on.
Thanks for that, Pach, one of the better posts I’ve read lately. As other people said, the whole “we are not afraid” is a strong response to all the fearmongering, and though it may be a little belated were it to make the rounds on the lips of Dems, it is true, and effective. Throw in a few give me liberty’s etc and those are some sound bites that the media would be hard pressed to ignore. Or maybe not, either way, their my sentiments as well.
In the comment, several posts above
“The Constitution provides for the suspension of habeas corpus: Article I section 9 paragraph 2: The privilege of the writ of habeas corpus shall not be suspended, unless when in cases of rebellion or invasion the public safety may require it.”
It’s the last part of that paragraph which alarms me. We weren’t really “invaded,” were we, on 9/11? The airplanes were ours, they were launched in this country, and had American civilians on board, so where was the “invasion?”
Now, as for “rebellion,” that is a genuine possibility, and may be simmering out there in the hinterland, when the folks who bought the neo-con arguments finally wake up and get really mad.
I never bought the 9/11 myth with all the flourish of Congressional activity following it, the Patriot Act, et al. Yes, tragically, nearly 3000 people died, and I felt, then, as I do now, deep sadness, but I was immediately sceptical that such a thing could happen to such a technologically sophisticated country as ours without some seriously incompetent leadership at all level of the Administration: Department of Defense, FAA, FBI, CIA, and every other agency designated to protect us. One does not need to be a conspiracy theorist to know that Bush did not live up to his oath of office, to “defend and protect the Constitution and the people of America.”
Why don’t we spend more time calling him to account for his and Administration’s incompetence leading up to 9/11?
I am not afraid of terrorists, or the “war on terror.” I am afraid of incompetence and politicians who do not take their solemn oath of office seriously, who do not apologize for failing the country. Bush should have asked all the members of his Cabinet authorized to defend the country to resign. When he did not hold any of them to account, it was all too obvious that 9/11 was a phony pretext for a phony “war.”

Link to pretty interesting political story on red state politics- about the primary race in Va. to take on George Allen. Ex Gooper Webb one of the candidates. Allen wears cowboy boots- Webb wears combat boots everywhere he goes apparently- and his son is slated to go to Iraq.
Please correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t Donald Rumsfield the Secretary of Defence and the person who is responsible for the planning and execution of the so-called War in Iraq? And isn’t he the one who instructs the Pentagon on how to carry out the plan he drew up and the polocies to be implemented? If that’s true than as the civilian leader of the War in Iraq he is also reponsible for the actions of those under him.
Since his polocies are being carried out on the ground in Iraq the actions of those service men who wantonly murdered women and children, and were clearly War Crimes is guilt of War Crimes also and is a War Criminal.
What everyone needs to do is blitz the House and Senate from all over america with emails, faxes, letters and calls demanding his removal, arrest and extradition to the Hague to be tried for his War Crimes. They also need to be informed that their failure to do so will make them complicite in the War Crimes of Rumsfield and that they could also end up being charged as co-conspiritors in the acts of War Crimes under the Geneva Conventions.
I think its time that all americans hold are leaders feet to the fire and let them know we will not stand for our leaders aiding and abetting War Criminals such as Rumsfield and those at the top of the military chain of command.
This is just a thought, but if we do not put our foot down strongly against those who are helping this administration destroy not only are way of life, but also our country, than all is lost.
Hold these son of a bitches accountable and let them know that copies of all you corresponcence is being sent to the World Tribunal Court asking for an immediate indictment against Donald Rumsfield for War Crimes and any House of Senate leader who refuses to arrest and extradite him for his crimes.
We need to put the fear in representatives as they have allowed this administration to put fear in its citizens.
Regarding Webb in Post#86
Beware of politicians who switch parties. He may be better than Allen (who wouldn’t be?) but, we have too many examples of switch-overs who carry a lot of political baggage with them. (Remember, Condoleez was a “liberal” before she embraced the neo-cons.) Political opportunism is usually coupled with money coming from some special interest with some special agendas, usually not for our benefit. Webb was part of the military-industrial complex as Secy of the Navy, as well as when he was in Defense Dept. He’s also very arrogant as a leader. Watch out what you wish for.
Great post! There ought to be an official restraint on the Governments use of the word “WAR”. And we need to return to that seemingly antiquated concept of seeking Congressional approval when a President takes our country into War, and I’m talking about something far more precise than the nonsensical overreaching interpretation of the “Use Of Force” resolution that gave the green light to go into Afganistan.
I’ve been visiting this site for the past several months, but this is the first time I’ve left a comment.
You, Jane and Christy all do great work, and I’m looking forward to joining the conversation often in the future.
“There is no War on terror”!
Right on. I came this conclusion three years ago. Everyone then (and most of my friends now) thought I was crazy. Once Padilla was tossed in the brig and left there to rot, and Guantanamo passed the Supreme Court sniff test (barely), it was obvious to anyone with a capacity for logical reasoning that the tools for instituting a dictatorship were in place.
My favorite meme. You are leaving on a trip to visit relatives a few hundred miles away. You don’t arrive. No one knows where you are; the car has disappeared and so have you. Welcome to the memory hole.
Wonderful post, Pach. Really stirring. This needs to get out there — the manipulation needs to stop.
Knut Wicksell — Have you read Glenn Greenwald’s book? Padilla was a turning point for him, too. What happened is very sobering and enlightening.
Thanks, Jane. In retrospect, it reads like a speech, but that’s not how I was thinking as I wrote it.
From the LA Times
http://www.latimes.com/news/pr…..;cset=true
Pope Benedict in an appearance at an Auschwitz memorial service … portrayed his countrymen as victims of the Nazis, who he said were “a ring of criminals” that rose to power through false promises, terror and intimidation.
I think he’s telegraphing a message with a relevant contemporary parallel. Some things even a person of high office can’t come right out an shout, however much they’d like to.
emphasis mine
From Atrios:
“An introduction of Senator Lieberman by a veteran at the Memorial Day parade in Waterbury earlier today:
“Jospeph Lieberman has served, he’s in his 18th year. And, ummm, as the expression goes, ‘maybe we’ll keep him there until he gets it right.’”

Margaret, #88, wrt the VA race to unseat Allen: I, too, am wary. At the moment, Miller (the long-term dem) and Webb are engaged in a fairly nasty campaign. Webb is getting some high-powered endorsements, and all I can think is that it’s a strategic move: Who has the best chance of ousting Georgie, the centipede missing 98 legs? I will vote for whichever one wins the primary, Miller or Webb, but right now, I’m leaning Miller.
Pach,
It does read like a speech. I was thinking of my friend’s speech earlier today as I read your piece. I thought, “Man, Wouldn’t this (or big parts of it) have been a barn-burner at the Memorial Day celebration!”
Somebody could use your piece as a speech. It is a good one.
Pach,
You nailed it. We can stand on that.
My idea for a T-shirt:
“I am not afraid. I’m a Person of Interest.”
It is so important that progressives (or anyone opposed to Bushism) absorb this narrative, which has been formulated most powerfully by Glenn Greenwald, and now Pachacutec. The point is that these people stand for anything but patriotism, anything but courage, anything but America. “Our” goal (and the boundaries of this movement have yet to be determined, and may come to include libertarians and self-respecting Republicans, as Glenn has brilliantly argued) is to FIGHT FOR THE COUNTRY. It is ridiculous for Democrats to be having an identity crisis when the GOP has effectively handed us the best narrative you could imagine: SAVE THE CONSTITUTION. Save America from these assholes. We need to be careful how we push this narrative, of course. We don’t want to become McCarthyites in the process, bandying around the word “treason” like Ann Coulter. The point is that a specific group of people, drunk with power, has taken over government and the country with it, exactly as the founders feared. All in all, I don’t think we should be civil or polite. Whatever happened to the Dubai ports scandal? That should be fair game. The perpetual fear about this strategy is that we’ll be branded, as we already are, as hysterical, looney, alarmist, etc. On any other issue that might be a legitimate worry. But I just don’t think you can go on Hardball and be attacked for passionately defending the Bill of Rights. There is already raw emotion out there, and if anything the craven media will come to respect democrats and liberals for taking a principled stand. David Brooks says that the NSA scandal is a debate Rupublicans want to have. Is it really? When will we take him up on that?
Farrrrr out, fahrender. graphics like this (((O))) (((O))) ?
Sharon, thanks for the LA Times link. I posted it here.
Nobody get’s out of here alive so let’s go ahead and live while we’re here.
That seems like a pretty profound statement. Surely someone wrote that down before me just now.
A friend of mine summed it up the other day:
When you’re the biggest kid in the school yard and some smaller kid pops you in the nose, you don’t kill him in response.
It is so important that we follow Gore, Feingold, Greenwald, and now Pachacutec in pushing this narrative. I just don’t see how defending the Bill of Rights can be a political loser for the Democrats. Our platform: SAVE THE CONSTITUTION. Save America from these criminals. Would it be too much to echo Goldwater, and say that anger (something other than “extremism”) in the defense of liberty is no vice? We just have to be careful about throwing around the word “treason” like Ann Coulter. I hardly think Democrats are in danger of erring in that direction. We need some emotion! Some anger!
I’m so glad to hear someone else saying out loud that they are not afraid, and are sick and tired of having our country brought down by those who are themselves cowards and only excel at manipulateing fear.
Thank you, thank you a thousand times for this!
Bravo, Pach.
I does read like a speech, and a very, very good one. This is something that needs to be said, again and again, until it seeps into the national conciousness. Understanding the wrongness – dare I say evil? – of those who would destroy our Constitution is the most important message we can send today. Or tomorrow.
Now, off to the beach with the wife and dog.
Powerful post, and true, Pacha. And what is true cannot be undone by a million lies. People like bush are terrified of the truth, and terrified that Americans will discover the truth.
On Memorial Day, a day to honor all those who have fought and sacrificed for our great country, I am filled with utter contempt for the snivelling lying fuck who postures as president. Fuck you, mister bush. And excuse my rage, everyone else.
Dropping by and happy holiday!
The picture on this post made me laugh harder than I have in a long time.
That just about sums up ChimpCo for me. I just printed it out for a friend.
I like the Desmond Dekker post too.

Welcome!
“Terror is an emotion. Emotions are part of human nature and cannot be eradicated. A “War on Terror” is therefore a war on humanity.”
Quite obviously when speaking of “terror” they are not referring to terror then emotion, they are referring to the terror the tactic, used by terror-ists to inflict terror on the populace. It could be argued that a war on a tactic would equally as futile as a war on an emotion but in this case it is certainly not the latter.
Awesome post, Pach! Great comments above, too. I like the simplicity of the phrase Tom Johnson has highlighted:
SAVE THE CONSTITUTION!

You are on target when you say that Bush should have called his Cabinet to account for failing in their jobs of protecting the Nation from security breaches. But this was not the case. IN FACT, several were given promotions and/or accommodations for their poor work performance.
AMERICA SLEPT
Congress, so enthralled with power itself, have fail to uphold their Oath to their Republic from which they were sent to represent in favor of honoring our president and his wishes. Following him, they are made powerful. Look at people like Condi, Bolton, Tenet, Powell, etc. Following Bush yields no accountability for poor work. Instead, following him allows for inequities to go unnoticed and rewarded.
Pat Roberts is a good example and his
UNintelligence Committee’s inability to even meet. Or Arlen Specter’s fained oversight of the NSA just so he can complain about no oversight, only later to capitulate to the president and AG on the “TRUST US” argument. Or people like Jane Harman, who sits as one of the elite 6 or 8 of the review committee for the NSA, comments on national T.V. that this program is being run illegally, yet takes an oath to the president not to disclose details and chooses not to say anymore.COLLUSION
And now we have an Executive Branch running rough shod over the Constitution, as if he’s running low and needs his steroidal fix of POWER/GREED/CONTROL. The Patriot Act was made, and has been manipulated through GWB’s buddy AG A.G. to now mean that the Government may Act out on Patriots, as these kind of people pose a direct threat upon the sanctity of America.
Well president Bush, TAP THIS.
Ever see a cat get pinned into a corner by a dog and HAVE to fight for it’s freedom? Well, Mr. President, We The People are that cat, and you and your minions are the bully dog on the block.
QUESTION: WHY IS IT ONLY MUSLIM ARAB NATIONS THAT WE ARE AT WAR WITH? That Bush evokes, as he has done on days like today, 9/11? There are other Muslim Nations that aren’t Arab Nations that do have their share of terrorism. Heck, there are other Nations where terrorism exists that aren’t even Muslim. Why aren’t these countries on the radar?
And yes Pach,
Terrorism exists in the experience of it.
It has no defined face or race.
It lives in the shadows, where BlakWidows kill their mates.
Let’s bomb the spiders too.
They terrorize the hell out of me and you.
Pach,
Are you me??
I was at a Memorial Parade today and I was carrying a sign that said IMPEACH BUSH. I was stunned by the un-supportive comments.

I was very eager to explain Bushco’s transgresses and why he and his regime are the worst in history.
I also quoted great leaders….
The only thing we have to fear is fear itself
When the cost of Patriotism is high, theer are few willing to pay that price
Terrorism is not an institution, it is a mindset
The Koolaid is still being drunk by the faithful. On a better note, I am in a very republican area. At least I didnt get killed.
I’ll will be sending my email to the Roots Project. America is at stake.
EXeffinACTLY!!
What can we do about it?
If the influential media wasn’t inherently biased toward corporate power, maybe they would speak truth to power and show America we don’t have to accept this Mussolini-style nightmare.
If the Democratic politicans would put the good of the country ahead of their election fears and the DLC-corporate interests, they could get in crisis mode so that something had to give.
If this were a smaller country, we could converge on the capital and shut it down ourselves.
The Democrats seem like the best bet — maybe we should start incessantly, desperately hounding them to stop this madness.
We need to channel our power to communicate with each other to organize and DO SOMETHING REALLY CAPABLE OF ADDRESSING THE PROBLEM (something beyond funding Democratic candidates). WE NEED TO DO SOMETHING NOW. WHAT SHOULD WE DO?
talk is cheap, motherfuckers do something!!
Bless you, Pach.
This is news? Are you actually telling me that the Bush cabal is a bunch of power freaks and brazen thieves? Well, dog my cats! I’d sure never noticed that before.
Absolutely correct. Two comments:
1) Please see http://newsfare.com/permalink/?seqno=1204
2) None of this can possibly be reversed until the electronic media have been drastically reformed. That is, they must be purged of partisan influences, or put on some kind of representational basis. It is difficult even to envisage how this can be done, but nevertheless we must do it, or reconcile ourselves to the idea that the republic is finished.
EVERYBODY SHOULD BE SAYING THIS. EVERYBODY.
I’m a downtown New Yorker and I know what it’s like to stop dead at the sound of an airplane overhead, unable to move till it passes. Been there done that and so what? After the plane passed I kept going.
After being evacuated from a subway for a suspicious package, I got on a bus or shared a cab (it happened a lot back then). And I got to where I was going. Even if I had to walk the whole way sometimes.
Three thousand families broken is a hell of a toll, but it isn’t a city. Eight million survivors keep going.
Because you don’t stop. That’s what you learn. Not for long anyway. I don’t think anyone in New York is “recovered,” but so what? Terror is a nasty annoying flea bite with emotional consequences. But it isn’t worth giving up a damn thing for. Especially not the constitution of the United States.
“It’s time to be America again”.
It’s time to form a third party.
I wonder in what manner the right wing, “support the troops” types such as Limbaugh, Coulter, Hannity, O Reilly etc, honored Americans who gave their lives for this country on this Memorial Day. It might be interesting to find out.
I have always said that the only way to beat terrorists is to refuse to be terrorized.
The “war on terror” is a war against ourselves not crazy muslims. Thank you for pointing out that importaint truth.
When exactly was war legally declaired anyway?
I thought this was more like a manhunt?
Isn’t this “war on terror” really more of a maketing concept than an actual constitutionally defined war?
When did we decide to let go of those questions?
I see a lot of people calling for impeachment but I have not seen people calling for our warmongers to be tried for “Crimes Against Humanity.” We need to start demanding that the Geneva Convention be enforced and those who have broken the Convention must be punished.

BTW, comments look nice in this template.
A-MEN, my friend! Testify! Can I get a witness? (And hello from Midtown Manhattan to my fellow New yorker Aquart! I’ve been saying for years now that most New Yorkers aren’t half as afraid — even though we have more than enough reason to be — as the other 99% of the people in this country who weren’t here on 9-11 and in actuality probably have a snowball’s chance in hell of personally experiencing a terrorist attack.0

But lying would indicate an understanding of what is desired, what is possible, and how best to get there. A more plausible explanation is that words have no meaning for this President beyond the immediate moment and so he believes that his mere utterance of the phrases makes them real. It is a terrifying possibility.”
Loons!
Go right on thinking there is no War On Terror. Just pray the next attack is not in your town.
What a bunch of whiney little spoiled out of control liberal kooks you are all.
You can’t stand the fact that President Bush has stepped up to the plate in this World war IV, the Cold War being WW III, and that he has decided your safety is more important than political points.
You read and write hatred in your little echochambers and think you are solving some big crisis and working on a political revolution, when all you are doing is moving the Democrat party further into oblivion.
Your hatred and anger for PRESIDENT Bush and republicans is sad and dangerous. You are eating yourselves alive with the hate and don’t even see it.
Wake up and see that this is a World War and that it is important to you and your family that we fight more, in more places and with more vigor than ever before.
If you loons had been around in World War II we never would have won it, and that is why your message is being questioned.
You are quitters and Anti-American fools.
You need to snap out of your insanity and join us in defeating the people that want the USA destroyed.
Stop playing political games and do the right thing.
Its a shame I know none of you will listen to this and will attack me for posting logic, but hopefully some of you will see the light soon.

By the way, this is a LEGAL war voted on by congress and authorized by the United Nations. (Not tha we even need that corrupt organization to let us do anything).
The geneva Convention does NOT apply to terrorists and you loons know it.

It’s good to see the bigger blogs are finally getting around to debunking the greatest scam ever perpetrated on America… The “War on Terror“.
I know this is an old thread, but perhaps you will still be checking it, Pach? An idea for a bit of activist theater:
A cute way to combine a protest of Gonzo’s attack on the Constitution with Frist’s Flag Burning BS would be to very publicly burn copies of the US Constitution.
Perhaps on the Capitol Hill steps or some other approprate place – I am sure somebody here can remember an apt historical precedent. And the Constitution burning should be performed with ponmp and ceremony surrounded by shiny and bright new flags and banners all flying high. (Stars and Stripes armbands would be a nice touch, but perhaps that’s going too far.)
It would be important to make sure the temperature was at least 451 degrees F.
The message – the GOP has no problem with Destroying the Consitution, they think it’s only important that the flag is protected.
I’m sure the great majority of the public would understand the point: That Bush’s “goddamned piece of paper” is ultimately much more precious than any piece of fabric (which was likely made in China anyway.) It seems to be a clear and easy message to get across.
GWOT is not what Bush wants people to believe it is, a global war on terror. In fact, he came up with the acronym to describe his real mission during his presidency.
Global War on Truth
To #s 115 and 116 – here’s one suggestion as to what we can do
http://www.worldcantwait.net/
So Dark the Con of Bush~
The parallels are striking…
Excellent post!
I would remind everyone that this is not an issue of The Evil Republicans taking advantage of your fear. There are equally evil, equally corrupt elements within the Democratic party who would have taken just as much advantage of your psychological reaction to 9/11 (regardless of who was responsible) in order to increase their own power and line their own coffers.
Remember that oppression can come in many forms, from either end of the spectrum. The key here, as you have said, is the rejection of fear.
Those who are unafraid are thus empowered and slave to noone.
Remember who you are, America, and you will pull through this with many allies by your side.
Continue to sacrifice your founding values, and you will find the opposite to be true.
Peace be with you all.
Pacha,
Great post. Just last night I was working on a post about the fallacy in naming this conflict as a war on “terror.”
Here’s the introduction:
When I am finished (hopefully soon, sometime this week), I’ll see if Jane would want to host it.
There is no War on Terror. There is however a war on the Constitution.
Thanks, P, that’s a keeper.
In an address to a joint session of Congress nine days after 9/11, President Bush declared “freedom [was] at war with fear.” He was right, but who knew he would be aligned with fear and waging the war on U.S. freedoms.
graphics have returned! Coloo Calay!
Didn’t Lincoln jail the Maryland Legislature? That might be sorta against the Constitution.
Anyhoo:
A friend of mine wrote that you cannot declare war on an adjective.
Wonderful post, Pach. 100% correct. Thanks.
“War on Terror?” It never was. It was “Succomb to Terror” from the start. Terror is a tactic to make you paranoid and shoot at anything that moves – to become insane.
We took the bait – “Bring it on.” Our self-proclaimed Christian government elected to join the “eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth” set. None of this “turn the other cheek” stuff for us. We’re going back to basics – the Torah and the Koran. Shock and Awe. Two can play this game…
Now we have Guantanamo, Abu Ghraib, Haditha, and who knows what else.
Given what we’ve witnessed, why does anyone believe that we’re going to have a national election this fall?
Excuse brain fizz. Jet lag.
You can’t declare war on a common noun. It isn’t a country. It isn’t a group of people. How do you know when it has been defeated?
War on terror. War on poverty. War on drugs. War on the misuse of language. Yay Orwell.
I get very sick and tired of the idiot trolls who still believe in the ‘terrorist’ meme and its spin offs. They are a waste of protoplasm and responding to them is a waste of time inasmuch as there is precious little intellect amongst all of em to even try to appeal to. So I am not appealing to anything in them. There is only vacuum.
it is a war against the muslims. if you don’t believe they would kill you on sight, stride your self over to the middle east and wave an american flag.
when a religious body is willing to die for their cause, you must do as george patton would do….
ALWAYS TAKE THE OFFENSIVE AND NEVER DIG IN.
we were sucker punched on 9/11, in beirut (marine barracks, friend of mines brother was on the roof and survived), the U.S.S. Cole, Embassy bombing, 1st attack on world trade center, etc.
Israel lives in the boiling pot, they kicked butt in the 6 day war, yet they are still in fear EVERYDAY. some of you here do not realize, despite your feelings, despite your kindness, despite your willing to live in peace, if you are not muslim and are american, THEY HATE YOU.
do you honestly think they will stop? are u that stupid?
it is an unpseakable disgrace to all who’ve given so much to America, what it stood for, to have George W. Bush as President on Memorial Day, on the 4th of July, on Veterans Day. It feels dirty, like a greasy pusstule slime has smothered all that is good about America…all that it once was before the great defiling of 2000-2008.
.
Frankly, most Muslims are fairly decent (and I work closely with several physicians who are). Your bigotry doesn’t bother me ethically. I expect that from freepers. What bothers me is that it is simply so ignorant. And reflective of a person who has not bothered to learn a little history nor tries to understand anything other than the propaganda that has been handed to him by
Bu$hCo. The Muslims who do hate us to the point of wishing to hurt us have been thoroughly ravaged by the US over a long period of time. But, of course, you haven’t studied history. And people are a product of their history as well as the atrocities currently being visited upon them by, what has become to most of the world, the evil empire.
Oh, and if you seriously believe 911 was the product of just 19 boxcutter-wielding Arabs…. I got some mountain property for you. Right here in NC. Yeh, they REALLY hate our freedoms……
Post #147 may speak it’s version of reality sadly.
It doesn’t matter what the truth is, or what the facts are. Over 30% of America has bought this clash of civilizations crap, whether or not they think Dear Leader is incompetent. Having never known muslims, they fear them, and thus adopt the very attitude they condemn in people they do not know.
The Constitution terrifies these people; therefore, they make war on it.
I’m one of the Jeffersonian “American civil religion” types. I would oppose any burning of the Constitution and would write about my opposition to any such action, however ironically intended.
Thanks everyone for the kind words. Please spread the basic message of this post far and wide if you agree with it.

Politely: fuck off.
I’m from NY originally. I lost a childhood friend in the Towers. I watched the smoldering wreck of the Pentagon from my window.
How dare you pissant fascists get off on the emotional trauma of others on 9/11 for your own psycho-sexual sick totalitarian fantasies? How dare you?!
You’re un-American, and I won’t back down – not once – in calling you on it. Come back to the Constitution and all can be forgiven.

I have a prize possession, my mint condition automobile.
And so to keep it mint, as you would have it, is to disassemble it and chuck parts of it in the garbage?
Save that I haven’t done that, as you would have it, I don’t drive it, EVER, as doing so could mean that I wreck it and die.
Your fear is in your head. That Terror-Drama that plays out there is about the next attack on our land? So let’s attack whomever it may be, that next light pole that may jump out at me while I’m on my Sunday drive. So instead, I choose to hit the light pole first? Yep, that makes sense. As doing so may be our own death. Quick and short. Get it over early.
Why get out of bed?
I’ll have another Prozac, please.
Pach–this post is one of the finest I have read in a long time by any author.
Will share it with family and friends. We are beginning to get it: we have been lied to by our government, with terrible consequences.
When the moderate midwestern Republicans in my family start to understand this, it will be an earthquake.
Merciful God, Pach, this is one helluva GREAT post. By far, the BEST I have ever read (no offense, Jane!).
We ought to send a copy to each member of Congress. Not that they’ll actually comprehend it, but to at least leave an impression (that Americans aren’t a bunch of brain-dead, attention-deficit zombies who only care about the next American Idol vote) would be a worthwhile endeavor.
Maybe send a copy or two to the Chimpenfuhrer, Darth Cheney, Abu Gonzalez, Karl, Addington, and Condi… just to let ‘em know that some of us see ‘em for what they truly are.
It is words like yours, Pach, that give me some small hope that we will be able to save our country.
You speak my kinda language,Pachacutec. As that caped dissident alliterist, V, of “V for Vendetta” fame might have said:
“Only when folk flick The Fear…… are the Fascists truly fucked.”
Let’s rumble.
Kool-aid, Kool-aid tastes great, wish I had some, can’t wait….Oh, wait, you’ve drank it all…..
Pach – so very well written – rings so true with bright, burning passion, disgust, factual history and the pure spirit of being an american. I thank you.
And to all the rest of you who so eloquently speak our hearts, I thank you too.
LOL, What a maroon. Not even worth fisking.

I guess the post has reached the bedwetting crowd. They’re here to piss in the pool.
That smell you smell, folks, is their fear, pungent and palpable.
Now, you’ve done it. By denying the vaporous, manufactured “War on Terror,” you’ve pissed off Charles Johnson and kicked over the LGF anthill.
Whether it comes in the form of another self-congratulatory bicycling post, or a frenzy of uninspired, subjectless blue-and-tan “scenic” photos — you have brought his unspeakable wrath upon yourselves.
“Look on my colorless, uncropped cycling snaps, ye mighty, and despair!”
What a bunch of blathering simpleton fucktards you’ve collected here. Nice work. Great Memorial Day topic, too.
“I’m from NY originally. I lost a childhood friend in the Towers. I watched the smoldering wreck of the Pentagon from my window.

i live in houston, many of my friends are traders that listened to people on the phones during 9/11 when they KNEW THEY WOULD NOT LIVE. what makes me un-american? the ability to tell me i am a facist or the ability to let u state my freedom of speech. u are a self rightous son of a bitch. FUCK YOU. i have muslim friends that are cool, but if i put u or i put myself in front of a muslim fundamentalist, guess what asshole, we BOTH DIE. you are a moron for thinking their religion won’t kill your ass on sight.
give me a break, my uncle spent two tours in vietnam and thank God came back. don’t preach some crap to me about a war where the enemy is using the koran (or any religous doctrine) as their reason for killing INNOCENT PEOPLE. Get off your ego and offer a solution instead of complaining. so what is it, what will bring peace in the world, mr. know it all.
oscar b:
You’re still a pissant chickenshit coward, and if you could read, my solution is first, return to the Constitution and bring the home grown terrorizing master class traitors to the law to account.
My personal solution for you is, take your damn meds.
What incredible insane rubbish, your column. Clinical. If you were in charge, there WOULD be no war on terror, only the victims of terrorists.
i am a coward and u are a hero? bold for u, probably cause u are on the net, spouting fuel for hysteria.
u probably don’t even deserve the name u chose….
Pachacutec
i would venture to guess i am more native american and agreeable to freedom of speech than u are.
u are the coward and deserve the great eagle of intelligence to take a huge shit on your head, for being so stupid.
I notice none of you freepers actually dealing with the violations of law cited and linked in the post. But you’re too cowardly to deal with anything as mundane as fact.
Tell Charles Johnson he’s a bloated self-important racist toltalitarian coward for me.
“Terror is an emotion. Emotions are part of human nature and cannot be eradicated. A “War on Terror” is therefore a war on humanity.”
Somewhere, Spock is weeping.
Airheads of the world unite!
Read a post claiming that MAD (Mutual Assured Destruction) will protect us … Well, do you volunteer your hometown for the first nuclear attack from the Islamofacists? And, what if we cannot determine which terrorists did the deed. Do we nuke Iran for practice?
You are MAD (Mental sense) if you believe that Mo Atta would not have set off a nuke instead of using an MD80.
Once it is done it’s too late to put the thing back together again.
Wonder how many Airheads died on 9/11? You should be pissed as hell that you lost some of your compatriot Airheads.
Your rage at GWB clouds your thinking ….
THAT IS WHY YOU ARE AIRHEADS!
Somewhere, Spock is weeping. No shit. The logic of these “progressives” is breath-taking. Whatever you do, don’t question their patriotism. They’ll really get wacky then.
#168
Wow. That’s EXACTLY what “Darth Bubba” said over at LGF.
They liked it over there. I just don’t remember the episode. Does this mean that Muslims are like the Horta — or just ungrateful animals who don’t deserve the “gift of liberty,” like the Freepers are saying?
Little Green Fearmongers
There is no justification for what Bu$hco has done. All who write from the right-your wing has adopted a very dangerous political philosophy that has nothing to do with conservatism and everything to do with control through fear. You can argue all day long about being right, but you have but to open your eyes, and I mean with ojectivity, and look around, what do you see? the wreckage of a president and a policy of failure everywhere, your way a disaster for humanity, a taking away from, always a negative. From the people like Ann Coulter to the prsident, it is never about empowerment and enrichment, and always about separation, and a poverty of generousity in both spirit and mind, it has a name that is very ugly, meanspirited, frightening to those who remember its last incarnation-that name is Fascism. It is not in full bloom but it is here, and anyone who espouses its views is a traitor to the Constitution of the United States of America, a document of empowerment and enrichment.
Amen Pach
charles “power bottom” johnson and little green pussballs, do us all a favor and enlist already.
What did I tell ya? Chuckie has another macho cycling post up. Already. Lackluster sunset shot at 11.
I only pray the “Long War” against the head-severing IslamoFascoMarxoAntidisestablishmentarianGeneric”Others” can be successfully waged by self-important, strong-calved men in lycra shorts.
Study this:
“If the U. S. were serious about thwarting terrorism or about minimizing our exposure to acts of violence designed to make us afraid, we would have rigorous port security and massive international goodwill and cooperation in the lawful identification of anarchic, violent networks. But we don’t have that. We have our sons and daughters fighting to maintain bases in the sand near oil fields, sacrificing their lives, bodies and minds for a pack of lies.”
Get it?
“… it has a name that is very ugly, meanspirited, frightening to those who remember its last incarnation-that name is Fascism”
Is it too late to call Godwins’ Law?
Soooo predictable.

i think you are right to suggest a trip to the middle east…. it can be quite a mind blowing / world view changing experience. at least it was for me.
i visited israel and the occupied west bank in the fall of 2002. in the west bank i stayed as a guest of palestinian families. before my trip, i didn’t think that muslims would hate me… but that didn’t prepare me for what i did experience…. the most generous, kind, open-minded and courageous people – and i’ve never been treated so well as a guest in all my life.
i’ve found that my own bigotry and unexamined assumptions (and i’ve had more than my share of them!) have best been challenged by life experience…. so, in all seriousness – i propose a joint trip. for 2 weeks i will play tour guide and we will visit both israelis and palestinians – those who are committed to justice, equality and the universality of human rights… through nonviolent action.
besides paying your own way – i will need a commitment from you that you will treat everyone with only the utmost respect, will approach everything with an open mind and that all your actions and nonactions will be consistent with nonviolent principles.
what do you say? i am serious – does november (after the elections) work for you?

“There is no justification for what Bu$hco has done.”
How about this one:
We went to war with the backing of congress, which is all the Constitution requires by way of legality.
As for international law, it has long been recognized that a party to a cease-fire agreement who violates the agreement has commited an act of war. Saddam violated the cease-fire numerous times, including firing on our recon planes.
That gives us an iron-clad Casus Belli.
pach -
thank you for this post. inspiring in the deepest sense.
amen.
Read what you just said friend! Hey – YOU/WE are the American people !! Get ahold of your thoughts and let’s fight for America! Okay?
That gives us an iron-clad Casus Belli…
to sacrifice the children of America on the altar of Halliburton profits. Further, it provides the avenue to gin up illegal excuses to spy on our political opponents. At this writing, the recent FBI raid of a Democrats office has placed the entire Democratic strategy for the mid-terms in Karls in basket. Our ultimate goal is the consolidation of wealth and power into the hands of the few, with a poor and terrified servantforce.
I’m sorta like slanthead in reverse. You have know idea how much I hate these bastids.
“At this writing, the recent FBI raid of a Democrats office has placed the entire Democratic strategy for the mid-terms in Karls in basket.”
What? Karl found the post-it note saying “Whine”! Well, I guess Jefferson should not have kept it in the fridge with all his tinfoil-wrapped bribe money.
Scott Free: How about, we went to war before the UN weapons inspectors finished their jobs.
Did you ever notice that all those WMDs that Shrub was claiming he had have never, ever been found, anywhere?
Did you notice that the only sites Shrub put guards on were for petroleum production? He left the museums with their priceless ancient artifacts unguarded (do you even know where Ur of the Chaldees is?).
Did you notice that before we invaded Iraq it was a secular state? Now it’s on the way to being another Islamic theocracy, thatnks to Shrub.
And we’re on the way to being a dictatorship, because Shrub ain’t interested in what you or I think,; we don’t have enough money to buy his interest. We’re just peasants on his royal estate.
There it is … Haliburton! Rove! I almost forgot! A conspiracy around every corner!
PJ … Iraq was a dictatorship you tater head.
They keep changing the subject from the violation of the Constitution, because they have to.
“Scott Free: How about, we went to war before the UN weapons inspectors finished their jobs.”
P.J. Evans: How about, that’s completely irrelevant. Violating the cease-fire was an act of WAR
I had heard that LGF was not known for its intelligent discourse, but you have to give them credit for proudly proving it.
dominc yeso,
“PJ %u2026 Iraq was a dictatorship you tater head.”
What is it now?
911 was an inside job. the patriot act was never meant for terrorist it was meant to stip your rights away. http://www.reopen911.org
Coz, A fledgling democracy.
“As for international law, it has long been recognized that a party to a cease-fire agreement who violates the agreement has commited an act of war.”
Nice to know we occasionally honor our international treaty agreements…which, according to the Constitution, supersede the Constitution.
Heartening, too, that all that hooey about WMDs and a gathering threat to the US and the world were just convenient bullshit to mesmerize the boobs.
Radar-painting our F-16s in the No-Fly Zone is DEFINITELY worth $300 billion and 2600 dead.
Saddam looks more intimidated every time I see him on TV, flipping-off his trial judge.
selise….. “i’ve found that my own bigotry and unexamined assumptions (and i’ve had more than my share of them!) have best been challenged by life experience”
so explain to me why a muslim fundalmentalist wouldn’t fuck your shit up when you are in their face and how your experience will save your life?
u do know hitler hated jews?
give your mind a break, cool people exist, BUT if assholes exist and are willing to die for their cause, your friendly aptitude does not jive, you are a goner u stupid fuck, do me a favor and take pach with your positive attitude. america would be rid of 2 idiots that don’t realize muslim fanatics don’t give a flying bottle rocket about your feelings.
NOTE by Pachacutec, site host: Ah, here we have another wish that I would be killed. Classy people. Boldface emphasis above added. Once again, unable to engage the subject of the mian post or the facts included and linked therein, these people spew violent hate. This the the right wing in America today, the freerepublic crowd. I really don’t see any evidence in the critical comments to this post that our apoplectic visitors have even read anything more than the headline. Tell them “There is no ‘War on Terror’” and they just lose it. WOT is to them a religion, insusceptible to review or examination. Their religious fervor for a warlike “clash of civilizations” helps us to “justify” and overlook our infidelity to the Constitution and to core, tested American values. The greatest danger to America is represented by people like our fine commenter here. Acts of extreme violence cannot destroy us, though this midset can.
Patriots who don’t give a shit about the Constitution.
Patriots who support our troops even to the point of having them die in the wrong war in the wrong place at the wrong time. Why? Because they are angry. No thought, no evidence, no argument, just anger.
Patriots who believe or country is free as long as no one disagrees with them and their leaders. And what is this about these leaders? What do they have to do? How badly do they have to screw up before these guys say it’s too much even for them? They talk big but 2/3 of country don’t agree with them. They want to sound so strong and independent but why are they so willing, why do they have such a need, to fellate the President? Why are they so scared not just of terrorists, or enemies, but of everything?
George Bush spits on the Constitution and do they go after him? No. They go after anyone who points out that’s what he did. Such courage, to do what they are told. What a bunch of obedient rebels that when asked to bend over, they ask, “How far?” Yeah, the Founding Fathers would be so proud of you, all those who have struggled for this country and what it stands for, what it stands for, why they did it, are so ashamed of you. As someone once said, if don’t stand for anything, you will fall for anything at all.
Hugh,
“They go after anyone who points out that’s what he did.”
So just what did he do to violate the constitution?
“911 was an inside job. the patriot act was never meant for terrorist it was meant to stip your rights away. http://www.reopen911.org “
Like I said, without the comments you really miss the flavor of this place.
Sorry, dominic, best you’ll get is url’s to more hypothetical think pieces.
oscar b. sounds really frightened. Don’t be afraid oscar, I’m right here with you. I just wish Dubya wouldn’t have made our troops turn left at Osamas front porch to go after Saddam. Maybe he needed to keep that boogeyman alive so oscar would piddle his panties and run screaming for the cod-piece-in-chief to take away all his rights.
Links actually embedded in the post are not “hypothetical.” They really are there. And they lay out the violations of constitutional law by this unaccountable executive.
If one commenter here buys the 9/11 conspiracy stuff, that’s one person. I don’t buy it. But I stand by every word of the post. No freepers here have yet engaged the argument in the post. Naturally.
I swear, these freepers can’t even read. So afraid. So cowardly.
dominic yeso,
“A fledgling democracy.
This idea of strong and weak I find intriguing. “We support the war because we’re strong on security and want to fight them over there so we don’t have to fight them over here.”
And Iraq was going to invade Nebraska when, exactly? Invading a country that was no threat, did not attack us, and had no WMD is not strong or brave, it’s just fucking stupid.
Oilfield Guy, you rock!
Pach
give the freepers at least the credit to know not to argue with someone who knows what they are talking about.
“Muslim fanatics”?
So THAT’s who chased the Rooskies out from under my bed!
Dammit — I spent my whole life getting used to one set of “subhuman others” defining my tribal identity, now the whole game is changed.
It really should be easier to figure out which hypothetical boogey-man I’m supposed to be trembling in fear of. Can’t we just settle on some form of generic “non-American”?
Seriously, without the government pumping me full of irrational fears, I don’t know what nation/culture/social demographic I should be wetting my pants over.
9/11 was an inside job?
So I guess 7/7, 3/11, Bali, ‘93 Trade Center, The Cole, the African Embassies, Beslan, Nick Berg, Sinai attacks, Mike’s Place, etc. etc, were inside jobs too?
The boogieman is Islam people, not Bush.
Wake up and smell the Jihad already.
dominic yeso,
I’m confused. I don’t understand the “War on Terror” since “terrorism” is a tactic and not an ideology. How do you defeat a tactic? Enlighten me.
Pach –
Presidents and Congress have fought over powers before … nothing new there. Is this what this is all about? If there is something legit about it I expect it to be brought before the Supreme Court before too long.
When you make this a religious war, you become the enemy.
Still waiting for an argument about the consitutionality of an executive claiming absolute power. Still waiting for someone to attempt to justify nullifying the Constitution in the name of “freedom.”
Signing statements wherein the President said he would not obey duly enacted laws of a Congress which his own Party controls, flagrant disregard of long standing and even permissive laws such as FISA, surveillance of US citizens without due process or probable cause as required by the 4th Amendment, a pattern of falsehood and mendacity both to the American people and the Congress leading to the prosecution of an illegal war resulting in the deaths of thousands of American soldiers and the expenditure of hundreds of billions of dollars. Engaging in torture, suspension of habeas corpus, establishment of black prisons in order to escape proper oversight by both the Congress and the courts. General incompetence, corruption, hiding behind a wall of “national security” to escape the exposure not of terrorists but his own misdeeds. You ask the question what has Bush done to violate the Constitution. Seriously where have you been for the last 5 and 1/2 years? What has this President and his cronies not done to violate the Constitution? The Right rose up against Clinton for a blowjob and because he lied about it. Well, as the bumper sticker says, When Clinton lied, no one died. How many people does Bush have to kill? How much damage does he have to do to this country through his ignorance, his arrogance, and his bungling before the Right rises up and says, This is about a billion times worse than anything Clinton ever did or ever could have done? Where are the Right’s values when it comes to one of its own? You will never have a bigger or better chance than the one you have with Bush because he is going to be remembered as the worst President in the last hundred years and maybe ever.
Coz,
Yeah, the terminology is certainly not as explict as “war on Islamic militancy” or “war on those who attacked us”, if you will. To win one must eliminate the power base of the foe and force them to submit your will.
This executive is fighting tooth and nail to keep its violations from the courts. Rather than have courts review the Hamdi case, they set him free in Egypt on the condition he renounce his U. S. citizenship, thereby stripping the U. S. courts from jurisdiction. Even Michael Luttig has called this administration out for its pustch, as had Reagan attorney Bruce Fein.
Wake the hell up, please. Read the links. Listen to Bob Barr. Read How Would A Patriot Act?

“Muslim fanatics”?
So THAT’s who chased the Rooskies out from under my bed!
NO, that is what made u an idiot. accept the fact, muslim fanatics are so kind, loving, giving, charitable to your beliefs.
are u a lollipop? or just a sucker? why are so many americans idiots???? doesn’t make sense when thousands of lives have been lost. somtimes seems like the wrong ones were taken.
NOTE: Boldface emphasis added above by site host Pachacutec. This is the level of thinking of the right wing. They cannot argue the facts. They only wish death upon those who disagree with them. This is the eliminationist mindset and rhetoric of the right wing, freerepublic crowd. They actually hate freedom. Instead, they wish death and violence on others. While we here at Firedoglake talk about a return to Constitutional law, our vitriolic visitors wish us death. This is the America we now live in. This is why I wrote this post. The right wing hates freedom. Progressive patriots love freedom.
“The boogieman is Islam”
Islam is another boogieman. There, I fixed it (as the cool kids say on FR).
dominic yeso,
Have you ever played Musical Chairs? Looks to me like the music has stopped and you’re chairless ; )
Neo-cons question Bush’s democratisation strategy
President George W. Bush has likened the “war on terrorism” to the cold war against communism.
Addressing military cadets graduating from West Point, Mr Bush reaffirmed at the weekend that the US “will not rest until the promise of liberty reaches every people in every nation”.
But as the US struggles to assert itself on the international stage, the president’s most radical supporters now dismiss this as mere rhetoric, and traditional conservatives are questioning the wisdom of a democratisation strategy that has brought unpleasant consequences in the Middle East.

Hugh,
So why not conger up the the powers of the leftie blogsphere and get some high powered lawers to bring your case forward?
“There is no “War on Terror.”
There is, however, a “war” on the U. S. Constitution.
After September 11, 2001, we’ve learned that we can take a punch and move on.”

Nope, no war there, we can just move on.
CEPAN at 129
I am not a loon. I am a New Yorker. I lost freinds (plural) on 9 11. But for a series of miracles, I almost lost a husband (he got stuck in traffic on his way to an NASD meeting) and two out of three brothers in law (one missed the plane from Boston to LA and the other walked out of the burning tower). I had two out of three sisters on airplanes that day and did not know if they were dead or alive for over 12 hours.
The ferry to the town where I live was used for evacuation. We set up a triage station at the ferry terminal for the wounded. Wounded who never came.
The “E” train station in the WTC was “my” station. Where I got off and on everyday. I spent 10 years using that station. I knew the Italian guy who ran the shoe repair store in the concourse and got my newspapers from the same newstand guy every day. He had a picture of his daughter on the cash register.
My freshman “little brother” from High School was a Fire Lt. Timmy Stackpole. He left behind 5 kids and a wife. For weeks afterward, every Sunday, they announced new names of the confirmed dead at Mass. I spent weeks writing condolence cards to former classmates and coworkers who lost husbands, wives and siblings.
Don’t you think it would be SOOOO much easier for me if I could turn my grief and rage toward an “enemy” that I could hate and fear?
Of course it would be.
It would also be easier for me to believe that their really is a monster in the closet.
But, I am a grownup. And grownups know there are no easy answers. No quick fixes. And hatred and fear will do the most harm to those who allow themselves to be ruled by it.
I know you are afraid. You would be a “loon” not to be. But you cannot allow your fear to prompt you to become the very thing that the terrorists want you to become.
Courage is not the absence of fear. The absence of fear is stupidity. Courage is facing fear and mastering it.
Do not allow your very justifiable fear to rule you. Learn to rule your fear. Learn to stifle panic and focus on logic, on rationality, on doing your duty as best your percieve it even though you want to hide under the bed.
Chicken Little ran through the neighborhood shouting “the sky is falling, the sky is falling”. Well, first, in her panic she was mistaken. Second, in her panic she was unable to give her neighbors the information they needed with sufficient specificity so that they could use that information to protet themselves. Third, she risked causing a panic that itself could have harmed her neighbors.
Chicken Little’s “warning” was valueless to those she sought to protect and was itself a potetnial source of harm to them.
The problem wasn’t the acorn that fell on Chicken Little’s head. The problem was that Chicken Little gave in to her fear and panic.
Be gentle with my fellow firepups. You may find it hard to walk a mile in some of the shoes you will find here.
“when thousands of lives have been lost. somtimes seems like the wrong ones were taken.”
100,000 dead Iraqis agree!

“doesn’t make sense when thousands of lives have been lost. somtimes seems like the wrong ones were taken.”
Well at least we know now what the “b” stands for: bigot.
What a really specimen of humanity you are to play so fast and loose with people’s lives. No wonder the deaths of American soldiers and so many others based on lies is so easy for you. Never an argument, just vitriol. We disagree with you and, oscar, we’re winning. 2/3 of the American people think you and your vicious ideas are history, like the Southern racists before you, your spiritual brothers. Good night, oscar. I’m glad I never met you and gladder still I never will.

The only difference is how we responded to that day.

Akin to OJ and Michael Jackson fans. Blood on the socks, in the car, Jesus juice, kiddie porn, disobeyed over 750 laws… it just doesn’t matter. Blind loyalty to the team, to the star, might be okay for some things. But we are talking about America here, and what it means to be one. Conservative, liberal, it really doesn’t matter, because we were all raised in a country where your govt could not spy on you without a warrant, jail you without charges, crush your son’s testicles to get you to talk and kill you so you won’t talk. The President of the United States has seized the power to violate all of these laws. This no longer resembles the America I was raised in, or you, or anyone else. We need to quit playing yes he did, no he dint, and demand this go before the judicial for a review.
Coz, Still seated ..
We’ll see what happens once the smoke clears. It doesn’t matter to me what certain “neo-cons” are thinking. What matters to me is that the middle east needs to find a way forward and away from terrorism as a means of political action. Trying to force democracy on Iraq seems to be a worth while attempt in that light.
dominic yeso,
Go read your and my Constitution to answer your question. Non points, non arguments, strawmen. Why are you guys so fact averse? If you have an argument make it. If you have evidence present it. I am not a dictator. I am a citizen. I can not impeach the President but I can certainly make my voice heard and do what I can to bring that about. What are you doing besides rationalizing a corrupt and lawless President?
oil dude –
Then do it. Get your pals together and prove it in court. If you feel that strongly that something so bad has happened that do something rather than just whining about it.
oscar b -
there are dangerous fundamentalist everywhere…. and what i value most – for example the constitution (habeas corpus, the bill of rights, the separation of powers) – is threaten FAR more by attitudes such as yours than the hypothetical possibility of someone threatening my life.
if push comes to shove – i hope i would have the courage to risk my life inorder stand up for what is right and protect my country’s principles. that’s what a patriot does.
i call on you to confront your fears and work to defend the best of america’s foundational principles. but if instead, you choose to hate what you do not know – and to put at risk 200 years of other people’s sacrifices – then you, sir, are no patriot. you are a coward who uses bullying, bigoted language in an attempt to hide your fear.
Force democracy?
You can’t tell me you don’t see the contradiction in that notion.
It’s not possible. One can never force democracy. Forcing a government or a form of government at gunpoint is the opposite of democracy.
Idiocy. Nay, murder.
josweber @ 7:43 pm (#220) – Rhetorical nonsense. Read the article that follows the quote, then get back to us.
Hugh,
I’m not defending GB, I just don’t see the proof of your claims and yes you can do something about it provided you’re right.
When we can get it into court, and some suits are pending, we will. Not so easy since the government won’t allow those whose rights are violated to know their rights to 4th amednment protection have been violated, claiming national security secrets.
Also not so easy because the many of us who have been victims of secret spying can’t prove it witout discovery, denied to us ounder cover of national security secrets. Wihtout proof of harm, we don’t have standing in court. But there are staets bringing suit. Stay tuned.
“Nice to know we occasionally honor our international treaty agreements%u2026which, according to the Constitution, supersede the Constitution.”
Rotwang, you are confused. In order for the U.S. to enter into an international treaty, the treaty provisions must conform to the Constitution – or else they are unconstitutional, and the treaty cannot legally be signed. So no, international treaties are in no way “above” the Constitution, which is the supreme law of the land.
pach –
Have you forgotten WWII? Shame on you, this is Memorial Day after all.
99% of u on this thread are tools, too bad u don’t hold the patriotism of memorial day.
do us all a favor and move to cuba or china. tools.
i would guess that the ones i am speaking about are WHITE, upper middle class and only speak ONE language. including the douche that started this thread with a native american name.
take your white piece of bread ass back to england or ireland.
NOTE: More racist hate speech. No engagement with the substance of the original post. Typical. No idea about who I am, or my heritage, which I’ve written about here before. But that’s not the point. This is pure racism, because they can’t argue or handle the truth. ¡Verdad! — Site host Pachacutec
WWII? Non sequitor, much?
You people are boring me. I’m ready to move on. You guys bring nothing to the table.
looseheadprop @ 220 – thank you for sharing that…
Right. Militant Islam. Bloodthirty Mullahs parachute into Anytown, USA. Churches closed. Only one flavor of ice cream. They shoot the family dog, Scrappy. Dad gets captured and sent to the sandalwood mines.
I saw that movie when I was 6. Scary stuff.
Maybe that’s why Chuckie spends so much time on his bike. He knows they’re waiting for him under his bed.
America is at its best when 19 guys in airplanes turn all of us into panicked boobs willing to believe the illustrations on a packet of Sea-Monkeys.
Look! The Sea-Monkey Family is having a picnic! Let’s kill ‘em!
A great post! Thank you for writing it. The analogy to Bush CO and protection rackets is spot on.
Dominic Yeso,
Perhaps you have forgoten that 300,000 Americans gave their lives in WWII to preserve the fredoms you are so anxious to trash.
WWII? Non sequitor?
Wait a sec, educate me on this one.
“I’m confused. I don’t understand the “War on Terror” since “terrorism” is a tactic and not an ideology. How do you defeat a tactic? Enlighten me.”
The same way the British Empire won their war on piracy in the 18th and 19th centuries. Kill all the pirates = piracy defeated. Kill all the terrorists = terrorism defeated.
Dominic Yeso At 226
Don’t you realize that “forcing” “democracy” is an oxymoron?
If it is democracy, it is something that the governed have voted to have. If you “force” it on them, it may be a form of government, but it cannot be democracy, by definition.
“rights are violated to know their rights to 4th amednment protection have been violated, claiming national security secrets.”
your people violated the rights of native americans you stupid mother fucker.

I disagree that my freedoms are being trashed and I am not trashing your freedoms.

Memeorial Day was begun to commemorate the fallen of WWI not WWII.
OKay, these trolls are well fed. Their inability to handle facts is amply displayed, in support of the main post.
Let’s leave them to fulminate in impotence.
dominic yeso,
“What matters to me is that the middle east needs to find a way forward and away from terrorism as a means of political action.”
I couldn’t agree more.
“Trying to force democracy on Iraq seems to be a worth while attempt in that light.”
I couldn’t agree LESS. Democracy doesn’t work if it’s “forced”, and by an occupier.

I would suggest beginning to do your own research in to all this. These are not subtle points or ambiguous matters. You do not need x-ray vision to see into them. I guess I would ask you what level of proof it would take for you. What threshold of evidence? How many body bags before you would say that Bush deserves to go? It is not merely that he is a very bad and incompetent President, it is that he does not obey the law and he says openly and in public he will not follow laws he doesn’t want to. If his own words are not enough, really what will it take? If this were Clinton and he had done these things, would you be saying what you are now? A man can jump off a cliff because he’s not convinced about gravity but he can only believe he’s right until he hits the ground. Where are you?
Forcing democracy on Iraq is not wrong. We’ve done it in the past very successfully.
Scott Free:
I suppose you could read this a couple of ways, but it seems to say that Treaties are considered “Supreme Law”:
“This Constitution, and the Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof; and all Treaties made, or which shall be made, under the Authority of the United States, shall be the supreme Law of the Land; and the Judges in every State shall be bound thereby, any Thing in the Constitution or Laws of any State to the Contrary notwithstanding.”
In any event, we obviously honor some more nearly than others. Ask the Indians.
To the nutcase that posted this and followers who beleive….say hello to Neville Chamberline in the history books for us, along with all the other blind fools of history.
Coz,
What about Japan & W. Germany in ‘45. Wasn’t democracy forced on them?
Pach – I’m not fulminating, I’m asking you pointed questions. Why not respond?
“Let’s leave them to fulminate in impotence.”
coming from an impotent idiot, how ironic. stop using big words to try to garner agreement.
a man convinced against his will, is of the same opininon still.
you proclaim all kinds of crap, actually you don’t, you just complain. offering no solutions.
you call people (or me) facists, chicken somethings, etc.
yet, you don’t understand the basic freedom tha allows you to be such a dick. the constitution you “think” is being violated.
take your weak ass to a recruiting station and join the military and defend all u proclaim on the web or are you too chickenshit????? i would guess the later. i talk shit, just don’t back it up.
i am out, any responses by pach will be unread, i have better things to do than to deal with assholes/dipshits that live in my country.
“It’s not possible. One can never force democracy. Forcing a government or a form of government at gunpoint is the opposite of democracy.”
You can force democracy on a nation; we did it to Germany after WW II. Do you consider modern Germany to be “the opposite of democracy?”
Oscar b.
Pach is talking about everybody’s rights being violated whenever one person’s rights are violated. E Pluribis Unum.
Out of many, one. We are all one people, so if one of us is deprived of their rights, all are diminished.
Right now, TODAY, young men and women are conquering their very, very justifiable fear to protect OUR freedoms. The have fear. They are not stupid. Every morning, they wake up, master their fear, eat their cornflakes, and go outside the green zone.
Pach is not objecting to any loss of his own personal freedoms, per se. (sorry, Pach, I know you can speak for yourself) He is objecting to the loss of ALL of our freedoms, that comes from the loss of one person’s freedom.
Scott Free,
“The same way the British Empire won their war on piracy in the 18th and 19th centuries. Kill all the pirates = piracy defeated. Kill all the terrorists = terrorism defeated.”
There are 2 billion Muslims in the world. BushCo is creating terrorists faster than we can kill them. We have 1.6 million in our armed services. Do the math.
Coz,
Not answering the question ….
Great post Pach.
I’d like to add, for those not familiar, that George Lakoff’s book “don’t think of an elephant”
was helpful to me in putting together several destructive initiatives of the Bush administration that derive from its strict father authoritarian model.

Here’s a story on the women and children murdered by our troops. Marine says he was ordered to clean up house and take photos after incident. Says he had to carry out the body of a little girl. States she was shot in head and as he carried her out her brains spilled on his boots.
He turned over his camera with the photos he was told to take to the military. What happend to the camera and the photos he took? I think all americans need to see what is really going on over in Iraq under Rumsfields and Bush’s leadership. Here’s link to story.

Loons!
Asshats!
Go right on thinking there is no War On Terror. Just pray the next attack is not in your town.
There isn’t. You can’t wage a war on a tactic. Well, you can, but you’d have to be an asshat. See my previous comment.
What a bunch of whiney little spoiled out of control liberal kooks you are all.
What a bunch of bed-wetting, pathetic braindead crybabies you are.
You can’t stand the fact that President Bush has stepped up to the plate in this World war IV, the Cold War being WW III, and that he has decided your safety is more important than political points.
We can’t stand that in allegedly trying to solve a problem that kills a few people a year on average, he’s started an unnecessary war, broken several laws, and tried to flush the Constitution down the crapper.
You read and write hatred in your little echochambers and think you are solving some big crisis and working on a political revolution, when all you are doing is moving the Democrat party further into oblivion.
Most of what passes for right-wing opinion blogs don’t even have comments sections. The few that do seem to require registration, which many of us won’t do even here. Oh, and the Democratic Party has been doing a fine job of moving itself into oblivion trying to appease right-wing buttheads. I’ve seen so much unanimity of opinion on right-wing blogs that the idea we have an echo chamber here, in comparison, is laughable.
Your hatred and anger for PRESIDENT Bush and republicans is sad and dangerous. You are eating yourselves alive with the hate and don’t even see it.
Eating myself alive, am I? You’d think I’d be gone by now. But here I am, arguing with you people.
Wake up and see that this is a World War and that it is important to you and your family that we fight more, in more places and with more vigor than ever before.
We’re not in a world war. We’re fighting bands of criminals who have money and, in some cases, a poverty-stricken state willing to allow them to stay there. That our current President can’t even get this problem under nominal control should point out just how pathetic he is.
If you loons had been around in World War II we never would have won it, and that is why your message is being questioned.
If you asshats had been around in World War II we would be speaking German right now, or Japanese. By the way, we were around. We were running things. In contrast to this “war”, we won.
You are quitters and Anti-American fools.
You are cowards and lunatics. Now, can we dispense with name-calling and get on with some actual points of fact or logic?
You need to snap out of your insanity and join us in defeating the people that want the USA destroyed.
Surest sign your talking to a moron who doesn’t know what he’s talking about – he’ll tell you that you are crazy or cowardly for not believing him.
Stop playing political games and do the right thing.
We are. We’re trying to preserve our democracy. That’s not just a liberal idea, either. There are plenty of conservatives who have warned about the behavior of the Bush Administration.
Its a shame I know none of you will listen to this and will attack me for posting logic, but hopefully some of you will see the light soon.
Yes, a damn shame. But thanks for playing.
By the way, this is a LEGAL war voted on by congress and authorized by the United Nations. (Not tha we even need that corrupt organization to let us do anything).
The U.N. didn’t authorize force. The AUMF was passed contingent on Bush allowing the inspections to run their course, and getting international backing. He did neither, so even that point is dubious, at best.
Besides, if a policeman just shot someone at random, could he rightfully say “Hey, you gave me this gun. What did you expect?” Of course not. There are conditions in which the use of force is not allowed, even if you have the authorization to use it under other circumstances. Arguing that the AUMF gave Bush a blank check is dangerous, at the very least.
The geneva Convention does NOT apply to terrorists and you loons know it.
The Geneva Convention covers enemy combatants in a war. If we’re in a war, they’re covered. If we’re not, they’re criminals and should be treated according to our laws or the laws of the country they’ve committed their crimes in.
You’d know that if you weren’t living in an echo chamber.
“There are 2 billion Muslims in the world. BushCo is creating terrorists faster than we can kill them. We have 1.6 million in our armed services. Do the math.”
Are you suggesting that all Muslims are terrorists?
As far as the “creating terrorists” meme goes, it is rubbish. As Osama said, when people see a strong horse and a weak horse, they naturally prefer the stronger. Kicking terrorist ass in Iraq and Afghanistan has shattered Al Quiadas’ myth of the invincible jihadi. Their numbers are dwindling.
looseheadprop @ 7:43 pm (#221) – I’m sorry for your losses. I was lucky; the people I know, including some family, weren’t quite near enough to be injured. Like many people who don’t live in the area any more, I spent much of the day worrying until we finally got through to each other.
To all our little green visitors, please RUN, don’t walk, to your local enlistment office today. That’ll show us!
Oh, and thanks for stopping by to educate us. It’s been fascinating.
Scott Free,
“Are you suggesting that all Muslims are terrorists?”
Ahh, no. I’m suggesting that of that group (2 billion plus). Thanks to Bush, that number has grown and is growing.
I feel sorry for the marines who committed these acts of murder against women and children in Irag, for indeed they were War Crimes. That being said I personally hold Bush, Cheney, Rumsfield, Rice and all the rest of this administration for putting our troops under the stress that lead to this.
These troops serving out country have for the most part carried out their duties with honour, however, when you send them into a active war zone for 3 or 4 rotations you are pushing them to the brink of total mental breakdown. They have done so much damage to our military that it is on the verge of collaspe.
Just as they are destroying our conntries economy they are also destroying our military from the inside. We are no longer thought of as a leader in the Free World and greatly hated. Any good will which we previously held with our allies is gone. Soon they will consider us a rogue nation whom they will unite against to end this madness if we don’t do it first.
W’s “War on Terror” is against the American People! Knew it then, know it now.
Screw the whole bunch of them!

It is really a disgrace that people like you and your little liberal fans here in the comments call yourselves Americans. I’m sick of this fucking trash being circulated. Look, there WEREN’T any “terrorists” in Iraq prior to the US invasion. GEEZE!!!!!!!!!!!
OK, I’m done with this thread ; ) LOL
Someguy: “I’m sick”
It shows.
OMIGOD How the hell old are you people anyway. 13?? You’ve really got to get out more.
Scott Free: “Their numbers are dwindling.”
Hahaha! They’re in their last throes!
Scott Free @ 8:31 pm (#263) Are you suggesting that all Muslims are terrorists?
Strawman argument, and obvious nonsense.
Another strawman, this time built on rubbish. Al Qaeda have no such myths. Their myth is that if you kill infidels you go to heaven where there are lots of virgins waiting. If they were invincible they wouldn’t need an afterlife myth.
Their numbers are dwindling.
You’ve taken a census, have you? It sure looks to me like their numbers are increasing. Of course, I just count things like terrorist incidents to try to estimate. It’s hard to tell when there are so many different groups of people killing people and blowing up things. When an IED explodes, is it due to paramilitaries, paramilitaries masquerading as police or Iraqi army forces, or terrorists? I’m sure that’s not nearly as accurate as checking your pulse or whatever it is you do.
Wow. Who let all the tacky True Believers in?
As our fellow Little Green Armchair Warriors demonstrate so effectively, the war on terror is a sham – the real battle being fought by the White House is the Global War Against Reality (GWAR).
someguy @ 8:43 pm (#269) – It is really a disgrace that people like you and your little liberal fans here in the comments call yourselves Americans.
Even though it sometimes seems to be filled with small-minded bigots who question our patriotism, we still like it here.
I’m sick of this fucking trash being circulated.
See above.
And yes, I am questioning your patriotism, or at least your mental capacity.
So, which is it? Can’t even make up your mind about a simple thing like that? What are you, a fucking liberal or something? Next I suppose you’ll tell me that “it depends”. Intellectual relativists, all of you. You disgust me.
Next time a school bus full of kids blows up, ask yourself if there is no war.
When did a school bus full of kids blow up? I’ve heard of several buses with kids in them crashing. I have yet to see us bombing Baghdad in retaliation.
“You’ve taken a census, have you? It sure looks to me like their numbers are increasing.”
Intercepted messages from Zarkawi speak of a drying up of the recruit pool, both in quantity and quality. That would explain why we have seen an increase in failed attacks, and attacks in which the drivers of car bombs have been chained to the vehicle and/or drugged. Looks like they are getting to the bottom of the barrel.
Someone hasn’t heard the latest reports from Kabul.
“There is no justification for what Bu$hco has done.”
How about this one:
We went to war with the backing of congress, which is all the Constitution requires by way of legality.–based on documentable lies
As for international law, it has long been recognized that a party to a cease-fire agreement who violates the agreement has commited an act of war. Saddam violated the cease-fire numerous times, including firing on our recon planes–More useless propaganda and certainly not the basis for a war
That gives us an iron-clad Casus Belli——–
Officially, the term refers to the grievances section of a formal Declaration of War. In this section, a government would lay out its reasons for going to war, as well as its intentions in prosecuting it and the steps that might be taken to avert it. In so doing, the government would attempt to demonstrate that it was going to war only as a last resort (”Ultima Ratio”) and that it in fact possessed “Just Cause” for doing so.
They had no just cause-the causes were manufactured lies, there was no last resort, in fact if you really dig deep you will find that saddam was trying to communicate through back channels to prevent a war–your ignorance is frustrating, your refusal to see things as they really are is maddening. Don’t you understand that these people have no interest in you other than as a tool to be brought forth to mouth their rhetoric. They want us divided-so cut the crapola we have a very serious problem here, more serious than nitpicking about bullshit.
Iraq had no relation whatsoever to 911-hello, we left Osama, who was connected to 911, in Afghanistan to prosecute a war we had no business starting in Iraq. Your man bush when asked about Osama, said he wasn’t worried about him. Saddam did nothing to us, and if you bring up the weapons he used to gas the kurds, or any of his other weapons, we sold them to him, If you bring up the tragedy of the deaths in 911, also bring up the tens of thousands of lives lost in Iraq, ours and theirs based totally on a lie-that is a mother fucking tragedy-all of it.
Now we are faced with bushco listening in on our conversation, and there is a lot more happening than you realize-mention of cifa might be appropriate-a direct contravention of the forth amendment-if you say you have done nothing wrong and it is okay if they do listen you don’t know or understand the amendment. This is a nation of laws, not men and if that changes god help us all.
I am an American– that is why the actions of this president have so outraged me. I know what our Constitution stands for, and why it matters. Do you?
Scott Free @ 9:04 pm (#278)
Intercepted messages from Zarkawi speak of a drying up of the recruit pool, both in quantity and quality.
OK, so I’m supposed to believe that while the Bush Admin. is whining about how all those leaks are impeding the “War On Terror”, that they are willing to tell us this? Just consider the logic of that for a moment.
That would explain why we have seen an increase in failed attacks, and attacks in which the drivers of car bombs have been chained to the vehicle and/or drugged. Looks like they are getting to the bottom of the barrel.
It might also mean that all the good places are blown up already, or that they’re better protected. It might also mean that they’ve switched tactics and are just saying stuff like this over the channels that the Bush Admin. have foolishly bragged about being able to tap so that we don’t know what they’re doing.
When the government only leaks the stuff that supports its position and actively hunts down those who leak information that runs counter to the official story, you can’t trust anything without some sort of independent means of verification. There isn’t any, at least that I’m aware.
Let’s pull back on the invective, folks. Thanks!

Cepan @ 9:27 pm (#284) – Your ignorance is exceeded only (and perhaps explained) by your inability to read and comprehend english. My answers to your statements, including the namecalling, were in the same vein as your statements. I like doing that to impertinent people such as you. If I said nothing in response, it was because you said nothing to begin with.
The desire for sex is a human emotion. Emotions are part of human nature and cannot be eradicated.
The prosecution of pedophiles, therefore, is an assualt upon humanity.
Fues Fission @ 9:05 pm (#280) – Just a suggestion, because I was having a hard time telling where the quotes ended and your thoughts started. You can block big quotes off with the BLOCKQUOTE HTML tag. That’s done by typing this in the message area:
<BLOCKQUOTE>The quote is here</BLOCKQUOTE>
and that will look like this:
Don’t forget that </BLOCKQUOTE> part (with the slash before the ‘B’), or we’ll all be in block quote hell until the moderators come to our aid. If you use that tag, though, you can set off a big quote so it’s easy to tell who’s saying what.
It’s also possible to set off small quotes with italics, BTW, by using the <I> tag. It works the same as the BLOCKQUOTE one, you need an opening and a closing tag.
<I>Italics here</I>
Looks like this:
Italics here
Once again, just don’t forget the closing tag.
islamofascists?-you guys are definitely without hope and I fully realize that replying to you is a waste of time but goddam man are you really that stupid. that’s it, tear me apart, I am yours to maul, I will just say in closing it is not us the propaganda is working on. When Professor Strauss said that what was needed to control us was a catastrophic event to instill fear, in his University of Chicago classroom, his neocon pupils took it to heart, and they have been using 911 the event, never mentioning the human tragedy, they unashamedly foist to stick in our faces at every opportunity-you guys bit hook line and sinker, take your fear elsewhere, it is yours not mine.
You are still right on the fucking money Pach
Thanks. I see what you mean.
Jim @ 9:52 pm (#286) – While I had some problem with Pachacutec’s use of the “terror is human” thing, I have considerably more with your version. Pedophilia is related to our sex drive, it is not our sex drive. Terror is our fear. That is a part of every functioning human mind. Trying to eliminate it is like trying to dig a hole in the sand.
The problem is that we’re aren’t fighting terror. It’s the collective inability of modern Americans to comprehend their language that may be the problem there, I don’t know. We’re fighting terrorism, which is a tactic. It is can no more be defeated than terror can. When is have we acheived our goal? I haven’t heard anyone offer a realistic goal, and I’ve read all the responses here, too. If there was ever an example of potential for mission creep, it’s a “War on Terrorism”. Once again, you’d be better off digging a skyscraper foundation on a beach.
my (#290) Good, grief, did I write that. Here’s a more coherent version:
Jim @ 9:52 pm (#286) – While I had some problem with Pachacutec’s use of the “terror is human” thing, I have considerably more with your version. The problem I have with Pach’s analogy is that we aren’t fighting terror. We’re fighting terrorism, which is a tactic. It can no more be defeated than terror can. When have we achieved our goal? I haven’t heard anyone offer a realistic goal, and I’ve read all the responses here, too. If there was ever an example of potential for mission creep, it’s a “War on Terrorism”. Great essay, really tells it exactly as it is!! It should be read by some brave Dem. on the floor of the House or Senate
…BUT the fact that this is a war against the Islamofacists.
OK, so it’s a war between the BushFascists and the IslamoFascists.
Obviously these people need each other to maintain the “war on terror”.
They both work to keep the level of fear pumped up as they continue to suck the rest of the planet into their enterprise.
You can see why they get nervous when someone pokes at the fear balloon.
Looseheadprop (#221) says some wise and important things. 9/11 happened a few days after I retired from being a workaholic with little time for political stuff (or even family, regrettably). I’m not sure that finally “having time to think” these past 5 years is such a good thing, but I do know that I have changed my outlook as a result. And I’ve had time to appreciate the inner strength of people who WERE affected, up close and personal, in ways that I was not.
I DO wish there were more discourse about what we should do, or not, in terms of what seems to me to be the smoldering kindling under a potential global war. Call it WWIII or whatever you wish. What I see from my chair (zealous political independent) is not constructive at all. I’ve had it with the Bush/Nazi stuff, the “smear an ideological opponent” stuff, the all conservatives/liberals are idiots/morons” stuff, etc. And with all due respect, I suggest that the “War on the Constitution” claim is terribly overblown. It is definitely in the “Chicken Little” category, AT LEAST as firmly as the fear of imminent national collapse and catastrophe at the hands of terrorists is.
I’ve seen the pendulum swing left and right a few times in my nearly 50 adult years. That’s the way the system works here, thankfully. Screaming doesn’t change the arc or speed; events and those in power bring on the pendulum swings.
I don’t scare easily and am boringly level-headed. That said, I will admit to concern over the global Islamic movement, the extreme parts of it. It’s way different than the Cold War, but no less concerning, in my opinion. And I have a question that fuels the concern: What “parts” of the Islamic movement (and it IS a movement, emotional and geographic) are “extreme”. Unless I am mistaken, the basic tenets of the religion call for Muslim people to eradicate “non-believers”. I doubt that means all Muslims will agree to the notion of strapping on a bomb over their Jockey shorts; but does the religion not insist that when push comes to shove there is an obligation to stand up and be counted as part of the “cause” (to crush the infidels).
I don’t think “War on Terror/ism” is the right way to say it, exactly, but it has to become a struggle, and a potentially violent one at that if people are true to their belief system. And that belief system predates Bush & Company big time. He would be viewed, I suppose, as an impediment to their goals. And these guys don’t like impediments staning in the way of Allah.
So — what do we do? Can we talk about that isnstead, or are we having too much fun dodging and weaving in the political and philosophic “War” (of words).
These right wingers are
PATHETIC COWARDS afraid of some simpleton fanatics living in caves.
Sure the simpleton fanatics will most likely explode some more bombs here, BUT WE WILL SURVIVE ANYWAY.
We don’t have to give up our way of life out of FEAR.
THAT’S PATHETIC — you right wingers who are willing to let the president become a KING to protect you are PATHETIC.
A country filled with people like you would not be worth saving. Luckily America is not filled with people like you — 70% agree with us — you are what Stephen COlbert called “the backwash” and what I call “dead enders” — cowardly unAmericans who want a king to protect you.
PATHETIC.
Frootz!
Let’s get a new pary rollin.
The Constitutional Party.
Liberty!
To all our little green visitors, please RUN, don’t walk, to your local enlistment office today. That’ll show us!
I did my three years. You who proclaim so loudly that you’re not afraid can prove it. Run, don’t walk.
This latest talking point from the Progressive/Obstructionist Party about fearmongering is laughable to sensible people. We can see who the cowards are.
A coward is much more exposed to quarrels than a man of spirit.

Your post is a war on coherent thought. Tell me who’s the bigger enemy, militant Islamist extremists or Bush?
“I don’t think “War on Terror/ism” is the right way to say it, exactly, but it has to become a struggle, and a potentially violent one at that if people are true to their belief system. Part of the problem with the “War Against Terror” is that the name itself is born of political correctness. The fact of the matter is, we are in a new phase of a very old war – the West vs. Islam. This war has been going on since Islam, a fundamentally violent and agressive religion, started conquering everything in their path, as they are instructed to do in the Koran.
But of course you can’t just come out and say that, so we call it “The War on Terror.”
Mind you, I don’t think all Muslims are by nature violent; Christianity went through some violent phases before they had their reformation and enlightenment as well. Islam is a young religion, and may yet go through a reformation. Introducing democracy to the middle east is a big part of that process, which is why I think we need to all get behind the effort in Iraq.
Intercepted messages from Zarkawi speak of a drying up of the recruit pool, both in quantity and quality.
“OK, so I’m supposed to believe that while the Bush Admin. is whining about how all those leaks are impeding the “War On Terror”, that they are willing to tell us this? Just consider the logic of that for a moment.”
It is logical to keep secrets that hurt you secret, and expose secrets that harm your enemies. What part of that logic baffles you?
People must CHOOSE liberty in order for it to take root.

Terry Ott @ 10:33 pm (#294) – There’s a constitutional crisis going on. In the last five years, Congress has lost its warmaking powers, its ability to make laws, and it’s ability to set a budget. The first they lost because when Congress gave the President the ability to make war in a particular set of circumstances, he took it as the ability to make war anywhere he wants. The other things they’ve lost through signing statements and misuse of government secrecy. There is little that Congress can do any more to control the President, save for impeaching him. Clearly, the current Congress isn’t ready to do this.
The President has also done his best to remove the First and Fourth Amendments from the Constitution. The First we’re largely losing thanks to the crackdown on “leaks”, meaning the leaks the administration doesn’t approve of, and the emphasis they place on having all communications out of all government agencies vetted by an administration appointee. We now have commissars where we once had honest disagreements between departments. The Fourth Amendment is being destroyed by Bush’s misuse of the NSA.
Now, if I were to ask you, just hypothetically, if an administration had broken four laws that have been passed to directly control its behavior, had suspended the right of the press to inquire into government business, and had decided that the Bill of Rights wasn’t meant for Americans who opposed it, wouldn’t you say there was a constitutional crisis? And those four laws? They’ve broken some of the hundreds of times, perhaps thousands. That’s exactly what we have.
I’m no spring chicken either. I’ve seen this country muddle through Vietnam, Watergate, the Iran hostage crisis and the Iran-Contra affair, and the latter half of the Cold War. I’ve never seen anything like this level of executive branch lawlessness. I’ve never been anywhere near as frightened for our country as I am now.
Read what Christy Hardin Smith writes here. She’s a former prosecutor and defense attorney. Glenn Greenwald of Unlaimed Territory, is a civil rights lawyer. These are smart, honest people who “show their work” – they show you where the evidence is, the court papers, whatever. I’ve spot-checked them enough to know that if they something, I can believe it. Go through that process with them yourself. Then come back here and tell me you still think this way.

That’s not what they’re doing. What they’re doing is covering up what’s going on so that the American public won’t see how incompetent they are at their jobs, which is what I said the last time. What part of that logic baffles you?
Hey Cujo,
Thanks for your excellent work tonight. On a completely different subject:
How did you get the blockquote code to appear as plain text with the GT & LT symbols. It makes it so much easier to explain when you don’t have to tell people to “replace the brackets” with the correct symbols.
“There is no justification for what Bu$hco has done.”
How about this one:
We went to war with the backing of congress, which is all the Constitution requires by way of legality.
“based on documentable lies”
A lie is a deliberate untruth. I have seen no documentary evidence that Bush KNEW that there were no WMDs in Iraq. And besides, WMDs were just one of many justifications given for action.
As for international law, it has long been recognized that a party to a cease-fire agreement who violates the agreement has commited an act of war. Saddam violated the cease-fire numerous times, including firing on our recon planes.
“More useless propaganda and certainly not the basis for a war”
That’s not propaganda, that is established international law and objective fact. Deal with it FF.
That gives us an iron-clad Casus Belli.
“Officially, the term refers to the grievances section of a formal Declaration of War. In this section, a government would lay out its reasons for going to war, as well as its intentions in prosecuting it and the steps that might be taken to avert it. In so doing, the government would attempt to demonstrate that it was going to war only as a last resort (”Ultima Ratio”) and that it in fact possessed “Just Cause” for doing so.”
A declaration of war was unnecesary since we were already in a state of war (Cease fire is a state of war – it just means a temporary truce).
“They had no just cause-the causes were manufactured lies,…”
Read U.N. resolution 1441; it clearly states that Saddam was in material breach of the cease fire. That is an act of war.
“Iraq had no relation whatsoever to 911-hello,…”
Who says it did? 9-11 is not the issue, violating the cease-fire is.
“Saddam did nothing to us, and if you bring up the weapons he used to gas the kurds, or any of his other weapons, we sold them to him,…”
Bullshit. We sold him dual-use chemicals that were neccesary for his water treatment plants (some of which he subverted for use in manufacturing chemical weapons).
And as for his other weapons, they are all Soviet made and supplied. This may shock you, but the U.S. did not make the T-72 tank, the Mig-19 or the Kalishnakov.
“Now we are faced with bushco listening in on our conversation,…”
Nonsense. The phone surveliance program leaked to the media was just a computer setup to monitor traffic patterns and analyze suspicious patterns – it involved no direct tapping of phone conversations.
If we are going to connect the dots and prevent another 9-11, we must first see the dots!
9/11 could have been prevented by the existing defense apparatus.
Al Gore MLK day 2006:
Fear drives out reason. Fear suppresses the politics of discourse and opens the door to the politics of destruction. Justice Brandeis once wrote: “Men feared witches and burnt women.”
The founders of our country faced dire threats. If they failed in their endeavors, they would have been hung as traitors. The very existence of our country was at risk.
Yet, in the teeth of those dangers, they insisted on establishing the full Bill of Rights.
RBG @ 11:37 pm (#307) – Hey, glad to be of service. I’m tired of these idiots ruining my country and lecturing me at the same time as if they could even buy a clue …
If there were thoughtful people showing up here, I’d be glad to have a serious discussion, but all they want to do is spew the stuff they heard on Hannity or Limbaugh and tell us that the reason we’re not as afraid as they are is that we all live in East Nowhere, Montana and don’t know anyone who was anywhere near the World Trade Center or the Pentagon.
Anyway, as to your question, the way I make a bracket show up as a bracket is to type an ampersand ‘&’ followed by “lt” or “gt”, followed by a semicolon ‘;’. That creates the < or > Let’s see if I can make that string happen without drawing the brackets: < >
Yeah, that’s it. So <FOO> is written “<FOO>”.
Memorial, day after and I am glad Pach et al can write up ChimpCo with snark that sometimes makes me laugh even though this administration is all depressing stuff. I am reading Glenn Greenwald’s book a few pages at a time. I get pretty down reading about Jose Padilla etc., even though the book goes into things I’ve heard before. Pretty devastating stuff.
It’s these yahoos, not us, who are the ones living in East Bumfuck. I really liked the comment by the guy who was claiming his 9/11 bona fides by saying he knew people in Houston who were talking with people in the WTC when the planes hit. Now that’s really up close and personal.
Thanks for the html tip. It will come in handy when explaining it on-line.
Now don’t stay away from the adults table for too long.
batten down the hatches, if Charles Bird has arrived, the back up forces are scaling the towers! /snark off.
As I recall, when we battled the pirates back in the early days of our country, they were rather easy to find–they were on boats. and they had to show up at least occasionally against regular sailors and ships so as to do their depredations…..
Try to find a terrorist (or terrorists) these days is of several thousand degrees of magnitude more difficult. And they don’t have to do much more than place their IEDs or bombs to have done their work, since their income is derived in a very different fashion than what some consider to be their forbears.
The entire Republican Party agenda for America revolves around promoting fear.
Fearful citizens are more easily manipulated. Fearful citizens give into their base instincts at the expense of rational thought. Thus, fearful citizens are more easily fooled into believing lies and half-truths, which is always dangerous in any society, but especially so in a fact-based democracy which requires truthfully informed citizens.
And this is why the evangelical religious fundamentalists are integral to the Republican Party’s plan for subverting our democracy, one democratic institution at a time.
The evangelical religious fundamentalists are the most fearful of all U.S. citizens, and thus the most easily manipulated. Their entire “faith” is based on the “fear” of losing their souls, even as they state that they are “saved” because of their belief in Jesus Christ.
So which is it? Are they “saved” or are they in danger of losing their souls? Oh wait, they are “saved,” but it is everyone else who is in danger of losing their souls.
This is why the evangelicals are out to supplant the “rule of law,” elevate their version of the Bible above the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights, and make all other freedom-loving Americans subservient to their religious belief. Just like Jesus Christ would want. What? That’s bullshit!!
From all that I’ve read, Jesus Christ was not a totalitarian, monopolistic dictator. Jesus did not demand subservience from anyone. Jesus did not threaten others with the wrath of God. Jesus did not kill anyone in the name of God. Jesus did not use fear or a never-ending “war on terror” as a tool of control. In other words, Jesus was not a religious terrorist.
So, American citizens are faced with two fronts involving religious attacks on our liberty.
Islamic religious terrorists like al Qaeda would like nothing more than to supplant our Constitution, our Bill of Rights, our “rule of law” with the Koran, thus subsuming our right to freedom to their religious dictates.
Evangelical, Christian religious fundamentalists inside America want nothing more than to supplant our Constitution, our Bill of Rights, our generally secular “rule of law” with their version of Christianity based on their version of the Bible, thus subsuming our right to freedom to their religious dictates.
Both plots are insidious. Both are anti-American. And both involve major attacks on an American citizen’s right to “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” as that citizen decides…not the government, not some religious fanatics.
And the funny (tragic?) thing is, both major political parties in America are involved in this “cleaning up” society campaign. Each has their pet peeves about certain “freedoms” in our democratic society that they cannot “tolerate.”
Unfortunately, in their quest to “save” American citizens from whatever the righteous censors cannot “tolerate,” the one thing they will not be able to save is democracy itself. Because, you see, righteous censors, no matter what political or religious stripe, are nothing more than dictators. And dictators have no interest in or respect for a democracy, and the inherent right of people to live free from tyranny…no matter how well-intentioned.
Remember that old adage: the path to hell is paved with good intentions. And what comprises the cobblestones that make up this path to hell: fear. Or a never-ending “war on terror.” This is the real goal certain fear-mongering, war-mongering individuals have in mind for our country. Promoting fear is the means, totalitarian control is the end.
Give me liberty, or give me death. Give me our freedom-enshrining Constitution and our liberty-protecting Bill of Rights, or give me death.
When I served in the U.S. Air Force years ago, I didn’t fight for tyranny or totalitarianism. I fought for the right of U.S. citizens to be free from all forms of tyranny, whether fascist, Communist, or religious in nature.
On this Memorial Day, in honor of those soldiers who gave their lives in defense of our freedom, we should all take the “U.S. soldier’s pledge” to defend our Constitution (and Bill of Rights) from all enemies whether foreign or domestic.
This is how we can honor the current generation of U.S. soldiers, many of whom are fighting in a war overseas in a country that had nothing to do with 9/11, a war hatched by some “enemies” of our democracy who have constantly shown their disdain for their oath of office. These same “enemies” of our democracy who have cut funding for the Veterans Administration, who have sent our soldiers off to war without proper body armor or shielded vehicles, who view the war they started as just another “profit-making” venture for their partisan business pals, who lash out at anyone questioning their incompetent handling of the war, who accept no responsibility for their actions that have hurt so many people. These are the “enemies” of our democracy from whom I swore to defend our country.
And so, today on Memorial Day, I have reaffirmed my oath that I swore to long ago when entering the Air Force. Will any other American citizens join me?
just testing, tried to post before, had a system problem.
Scott Free @ 11:40 pm (#308) -
“There is no justification for what Bu$hco has done.”
How about this one:
We went to war with the backing of congress, which is all the Constitution requires by way of legality.
That’s an excuse, not a justification. The AUMF was contingent on the Bush Admin doing things they then decided not to do. If you give a gun to a cop and he shoots someone for no reason, he can’t turn around and say it’s your fault for giving him the gun.
It was contingent on the war being necessary, and WMD having been found, or the inspection process being obstructed. None of those things was true. They just did it because they could.
“based on documentable lies”
A lie is a deliberate untruth. I have seen no documentary evidence that Bush KNEW that there were no WMDs in Iraq. And besides, WMDs were just one of many justifications given for action.
They are either liars or fools. Logically, they could not have been anything else. The evidence was not in the least convincing. They covered up the evidence that didn’t support what they wanted to do. They deliberately left the rest classified and declassified the part they liked. That’s deliberate. Ergo, they lied.
As for international law, it has long been recognized that a party to a cease-fire agreement who violates the agreement has commited an act of war. Saddam violated the cease-fire numerous times, including firing on our recon planes.
Do you think that if you repeat this enough times, we’ll take it seriously. Someone answered this about 100 comments ago.
“More useless propaganda and certainly not the basis for a war”
That’s not propaganda, that is established international law and objective fact. Deal with it FF.
That gives us an iron-clad Casus Belli.
Nonsense piled on nonsense. Again, refuted earlier. I’ll just add that we had been responding to those provocations in the way we needed to before ground operations started. In other words, when they got hostile we bombed the batteries in question.
So, deal with it FF.
There was no declaration of war. Ever. There was an authorization to use military force (AUMF). Note the wording. That’s not a declaration of war.
“They had no just cause-the causes were manufactured lies,”
Read U.N. resolution 1441; it clearly states that Saddam was in material breach of the cease fire. That is an act of war.
It did not authorize the use of military force. Without an actual need to defend ourselves, we violated the U.N. Charter.
“Iraq had no relation whatsoever to 911-hello,”
Who says it did? 9-11 is not the issue, violating the cease-fire is.
Besides Bush, Cheney, and Rice? No one I can think of, but there are probably more.
“Saddam did nothing to us, and if you bring up the weapons he used to gas the kurds, or any of his other weapons, we sold them to him,”
Bullshit. We sold him dual-use chemicals that were neccesary for his water treatment plants (some of which he subverted for use in manufacturing chemical weapons).
Bullshit. We sold him weapons he could use against Iran, whom we really, really didn’t like at the time because they took our embassy hostage.
And as for his other weapons, they are all Soviet made and supplied. This may shock you, but the U.S. did not make the T-72 tank, the Mig-19 or the Kalishnakov.
This may shock you, but the U.S. has often been able to sell Russian-made equipment to countries that already use it predominately in their armies. We got a lot of it from Israel and some from Vietnam.
“Now we are faced with bushco listening in on our conversation,”
Nonsense. The phone surveliance program leaked to the media was just a computer setup to monitor traffic patterns and analyze suspicious patterns – it involved no direct tapping of phone conversations.
And again, you know this how? There is absolutely no oversight for these programs. They are whatever they are, and only the White House and the NSA know for sure what that means.
An Electronic Frontier Foundation lawsuit alleges that the NSA have been putting data-duplication devices at many telephone hubs on the West Coast, and possibly elsewhere. They have signed affadavits from at least one former technician who helped install that equipment. No explanation of the equipment’s actual use has been offered by the phone companies involved.
If we are going to connect the dots and prevent another 9-11, we must first see the dots!
We also need to know the difference between dots and spots on our eyes.
“We went after the criminals who attacked us when we invaded Afghanistan.”
No,”we” didn’t. The controlled demolitions had little to do with getting the poppies flowing again.
Whew! Just hopped down here without really sampling the comments to say:
1. I like this essay. Thanks, Pachacutec, for pointing out some things that need to be said.
2. We hear these days that the Dems are so quiet about Bush’s constitutional travesties (etc.) because they are terrified of being painted as soft on national security in the coming electoral campaigns. What i’ve never understood is why they apparently haven’t considered, as a body, framing an issue based on these transparently true words:
The plain, unfitted truth of the Bush record ought to be all the Dems need to establish that while proclaiming the national security state, they have not actually done any of the most obvious first steps to secure our safety. (Perhaps I exaggerate slightly here, but I’m just throwing stuff out there.)
The other half of the argument is to make the point that is too seldom made, that our ability to be secure here at home must begin with the citizenry being equipped to understand and fulfill the necessary roles—starting with the role of voting citizen, and right on through to the specialized functions. That means that the public as a body have a stake in the efficacy of our health and educational systems, especially, that this government shows no sign of recognizing. As an example of a security study that is already out there making this kind of point—and that Repubs as well as Dems had a hand in to boot—compare this second key judgement from a portion of the much-neglected Hart-Rudman report to anything put out by the PNAC:
This point was so important to the authors of the report that they followed it up with a brief assessment of needs and costs of remedy just in the area of boosting math/science majors and teachers (scroll down to Education Addendum on this page. If you have time, you could compare the full education addendum in pdf to the hackwork in education the Badministration have offered.)
The Hart-Rudman report became famous for having warned of the danger to the U.S. from global terrorism, but the report is much bigger than that, and should have been much more important. It emphasized the importance of maintaining core values of democracy and rule of law in U.S. behavior, prescribed what its authors called “preventive diplomacy” over military engagement where possible, related scenarios in which U.S. attemtps to dominate world resources would lead to greater instability, and tried to make the point that the quality of the society is an important factor of national security. In a certain sense, Hart-Rudman represents what the nation was doing when Bush and the PNAC crew so rudely interrupted it. The Dems now could do much worse than to revisit the issues raised in the report—after all, Congress paid for it—as a basis for reframing the national security debate.
I think this is a great article, full of encouragement to those of us who remember the good old days when we Americans stood tall and proud.
Then, I read some of the responses. Sheesh. I see a dynamic going on here, maybe you can see it too.
Yin-Positive and uplifting article encouraging:
1. Courage and strength
2. Faith
3. Return to law
4. Fighting of anyone who would curtail our freedom
5. Honoring those who have died for our freedom
6. continuing our lives not ruled by fear. This is how to win against terrorists, don’t play the part they want you to play! Don’t be afraid!
Yang-Negative comments designed to try to convince us that all those listed things are bad. You see, in upside-down world, war is peace, slavery is freedom, and courage is fear.
Fear closes the mind, and the more closed minded you are the more you endorse more fear. The more closed minded you are the less options you will consider for conflict resolution. In a sense, those who fear-monger have set fire to your building and blocked off the exits except for where they want you to go.
You know, I do understand the motivations of those who initiate the fear. They are a very purpose minded bunch who desire power. The people I feel sorry for are the dittoheads that cannot discern for themselves who is lying to them and who is really on their side. So if any of you are confused, here’s how to tell:
1. Follow the money. Those making a king’s ransom from other’s misfortune (e.g. war) aren’t the good guys.
2. Whoever says that courage and resistance to fear are bad things, they are bad guys.
Uplift each other with encouragement, with hope. From Braveheart: “They may take our lives, but they will not take away our freedom!”
scott free-give it up, nobody wins. Better yet you win, everything you say is the absolute truth. You couldn’t be more right. Just remember that where you stand
Is with George Walker Bush-good luck too you.
“There is no “War on Terror.”
There is, however, a “war” on the U. S. Constitution.
After September 11, 2001, we’ve learned that we can take a punch and move on. We’ve faced far worse threats to our national survival in our history – the Civil War, the War of 1812, World War II to name a few – but we never abandoned our Constitution. Until now.”
What kind of stupid fucklery is this? You all must be a bunch of fucking idiots to pass that off. Any shit-wit with half a brain knows what went on in Emarika during those wars and kows that most of the things that did happen would cause a civil war on your behalf because your precious freedoms were taken. Propoganda, the draft, the spying and everything else that happened in WWII would cause you to have a fucking fit today. Get the fuck over your selvs and pull your heads outa your asses.
Oh and BTW, have a happy D-day, i know i will.
The Real McGuyver @ 12:47 am (#321) – Good, another halfwit who can’t use a spell checker and couldn’t complete syllogism if his life depended on it.
The closest you ever got to making a point was that things were somewhat restricted during WWII. Fair enough, but frankly some of those restrictions were unnecessary and a few were ruled unconstitutional even at the time. Others, like the internment of Japanese-Americans, are stains that remain on our honor to this day. For instance, Truman wasn’t allowed to take over Johnstown Steel. The Supreme Court said that even in wartime a President has to obey the law. President Bush has exempted himself from that requirement, and the Supreme Court has at least once said he couldn’t do it. Yet, he continues to try.
Thanks for stopping by. Oh, and BTW, have a happy Flag Day. I know I will.
“Terror” is a strategy, performed by those manipulated by their religious beliefs regarding Heaven and by those who would use “Terror” as a weapon. You need to study up on this situation…before you declare that “There is no War on Terror.”
A sadly amusing list of comments. I’ll give you credit – I think many of you actually believe all of the demonstrably false statements you make. If our Islamo-facist enemies read the article and stream of comments – I’m sure they will get a big chuckle. Based on you guys – they have already won. But with folks like you – any reasonable conversation is impossible. Make sure to keep on giving comfort to the people who are trying to kill us. Good work my friends. Keep repeating the mantra – they don’t want to hurt us, it’s all just been made up, no problem. And anyway – if they kill 100,000 Americans tomorrow – you can just repeat – “It’s Bush’s faulf”. Sad and pathetic – the whole lot of you.
test
This is, without a doubt, the most idiotic piece of twaddle that I’ll read all week.
Now that you’ve peed them, you might want to change those pants.
I am like, soo afraid of those islamofascists…… I am, however, very afraid of what the american Bu$hCo. fascists plan for our country and constitution. Like many who have written their drivel on these pages. Yeh, these folks, just like the asswipes in the white house, are the true terrorists. And kinda stoopid. But then, there is no accounting for stoopid repuklian bush butt lickers. Taste good, boys? Try it with whipped soufle of christian. Ah the essence! of self-righteousness mixed the dark earthy flavor of delusion.
Yummy for you.

Your post is a war on coherent thought. Tell me who’s the bigger enemy, militant Islamist extremists or Bush?
Geeze, do we have to choose?
Bush is the bigger enemy ~ clearly ~ to America, to Americans, and to our Constitutional Republic. Unfortunately, Bush is also a friend ~ clearly ~ to those militant Islamist extremists that dupes like Charles Bird invoke whenever their rigid belief systems are challenged. Bush has done more to help those ‘militant Islamic extremists’ than Osama could ever have dreamed. He’s given them a perfect training ground for their jihad in Iraq. And, he’s well on the way to expanding it to Iran, and likely throughout the Middle East. Bush is America’s worst nightmare ~ clearly ~ a tyrant whose sole mission is to destroy the Constitution and America from within so that Osama Bin Laden doesn’t have to do anything but sit back and watch the implosion. Heckuva Job, Georgie.
I found that I couldn’t watch any Memorial Day msm tv. I felt overwhelmed with the magnitude of the consequences of war entered into based on lies. So many wonderful americans paying the price for agendas that have nothing to do with spreading democracy or fighting terrorism & everything to do with power & greed. I felt the same outrage & immense sadness watching the Katrina fiasco. When you see americans showing so much bravery, compassion & willingness to make things better for other people & at the same time see these efforts undermined, often deliberately I think, by the policies of our so-called leadership, I almost feel like getting a prescription for an anti-depressant. I’m praying we can oust these psuedo americans, these false patriots in the coming elections that are destroying this country.
They all have the all have the same “argument” – “u r an idiot” (how clever). The spittling rage of these freepers is scary. Take them on? Put them to bed, it’s nap time.
I am having my morning coffee and left the computer on all night to these comments, and you guys are still at it. Well….I am joining the fight against the ignorance today. I am going out to hunt down all thses islamo fascist pigs, I am out of bacon. I understand it could be dangerous and have put on my pith helmit. I don’t need any weapons, you dumber than a bag of hammers guys have left your bags here, Thanks.
Reading through the collected comments here leaves me very concerned with the state of American education. The volumes of pointless, incoherent wingnut spew tossed around here makes a highly compelling point for the need to learn rhetoric and debate. (Hell, to learn how to make a coherent statement.)
I’m also reminded of Al Franken’s point in the “Rush Limbaugh” book that liberals love America considering all its good and bad points, and despite all its faults. In contrast, conservatives love America like a 4 year old loves Mommy: everything that Mommy does is perfect, and everybody that doesn’t like Mommy is evil and must die.
Thanks for a great original post. A war without a goal is not a war. Bush and crew have never been willing nor able to state a goal or endpoint for this war, other than to offer new-agey pablum like “When this world is free from the clutches of evil…”
Is a border fence a War on Mexican Immigrants? Are policemen fighting the War on Crime? For those who think we’re fighting a war on terror (and that it justifies the actions of our wartime president), what’s the goal of the war? When will we know the war is over?
Your post is a war on coherent thought. Tell me who’s the bigger enemy, militant Islamist extremists or Bush?
Bush. He actually has power over our lives. Real power that some people voted to give him. And that power effects us long after he’s gone in the form of the SCOTUS. Don’t look at me. I voted for the other guy.
Welcome to the new Evil Empire, kids.
Supreme Court rules against gov’t whistleblowers. “The Supreme Court on Tuesday made it harder for government employees to file lawsuits claiming they were retaliated against for going public with allegations of official misconduct,” the AP reports. By a 5-4 vote, justices ruled “that the First Amendment does not provide protection for comments that a public employee makes in the course of performing regular duties, even if the comments alleged public corruption or government wrongdoing.” Justice Samuel Alito cast the tie-breaking vote.
UPDATE: More on the ruling from SCOTUSBlog: “This apparently means that employees may be disciplined for their official capacity speech, without any First Amendment scrutiny, and without regard to whether it touches on matters of “public concern” %u2014 a very significant doctrinal development.”
Rev T writes:
um… right, so why isn’t it a war on Those People? Timothy McVeigh was a terrorist; is this a war on future Tim McVeighs too?
This isn’t just a semantic argument; if Bush is going to claim wartime powers, we need to know when those wartime powers will end. By definition, wartime powers can’t be permanent.
“It’s Bush’s faulf” Faulf? Lather, rinse, repeat?
Your rage at GWB clouds your thinking %u2026.
Does rage at “islamo fascists”, whatever they are, cloud yours?
Reading through the collected comments here leaves me very concerned with the state of American education. The volumes of pointless, incoherent wingnut spew tossed around here makes a highly compelling point for the need to learn rhetoric and debate. (Hell, to learn how to make a coherent statement.
um%u2026 right, so why isn’t it a war on Those People? Timothy McVeigh was a terrorist; is this a war on future Tim McVeighs too
Right wing Christian extremists are already under attack. The evil secular humanists have them pinned down on our left flank. That would be the McVeigh’s right flank.
Real Americans are afraid of evil head-chopper terrorists and want to seek refuge in the warm bosom of the loving father and defender and protecter, the Great Decider, George W. Bush.
The rest of the cowards in America want to live life free from the protecting hands and all knowing minds of the Republican Party and their massive security apparatus.
All Hail The Great Decider and his loyal minions.

Without a war to unite them, they’ve got nothing. If there wasn’t a war, they’d have to invent one, or start one. Let them start it here. On this ground. We’ll see which little dog has the biggest fight in it soon enough.
Thanks 334-I am as guilty as the right-I read what they write as truth or babble and lose it-we have the battle of our lives in front of us. I truly believe a dialogue with reasonable discourse is possible between our two camps, but not if we resort to name calling-me included.
For more on the Bush administration’s misguided attempt to fight an abstraction, see:
“Global War on Error.”
Off topic somewhat-Our rights have taken another shot across the bow with the supreme court decision regarding whistle blowers. The country that honored its fallen for their service to America and its democracy have been shown no respect once again-the country they fought for is not the country we have-this written by a man who served his country-not in war but service all the same. I would ask with all the heart I can that you on the right open your eyes to what is really happening, drop the rhetoric that vindictiveness is, and really engage in conversation with us. We are not the enemy, we are you from a different viewpoint. We all want the same thing-a decent country to live in.
It should be called what it is, a war against a vile ideology: Islam.
“We The People”, shall overcome those half-wits in Washington…It’s trully difficult for me to not lose my mind over the current administration and the way they have tried to appease to “People” in the name of terror and their justified lies…They should be kicked out of Washington ASAP.
> After September 11, 2001, we’ve learned that we can take a punch and move on.
With all due sympathy for the victims and their surviving families, is this a joke? The US has done anything and everything EXCEPT move on from 9/11, as the violence America has brought to the world in the wake of the attacks continues. The post-9/11 response is a mark of shame on the US and its citizens.
There is a war on Terror and you are fighting on the side of the terrorists. You are guilty of sedition. Turn yourself in immediately.
Stuart Thiel’s remarks, way back at 23, about the courage to take over made me think of the moose who stands his ground on the train tracks against the approaching train, not realizing that there is something bigger than him. Here’s hoping that true democracy is the train.
I constantly wonder about this alternate scenario. Imagine if everything that has happened in the last 6 years from 911 to Katrina to Afghanistan to Iraq war to Iraq reconstruction to port security, every event, every policy, every single thing done or not done by the bush administration had instead been executed by Kerryco or Goreco. Just substitute democrats for republicans, flip the players…can the ardent bush supporters truly say they would not have had any problems, doubts or criticsms? Would they have wholeheartedly supported the whole ball of wax? Somehow, I doubt it.
Islam is not a unitary system of beliefs. Many forms exist. Some use Islamic justifications for criminal, violent actions. For that matter, some use Christian beliefs to justify criminal, violent actions.
Many in history have used religious beliefs to propel violence, both their own beliefs as justification for killing and the beliefs of perceived enemies to be killed as punishment for believing differently.
Calling this a war against an “ideology of Islam” is just a way to say you have an ideology to propel through violence.
Let’s first stipulate that this is immoral, but even if we don’t agree there, it is pragmatically impossible to do. You cannot kill all whose ideas oppose yours. In fact, the goal of killing or converting by force all those whose ideas oppose yours is inimical to the very “freedom” you claim to represent. So, of course, your ideology is violence and conquest, ergo, you are a criminal and a thug, an empire builder whose values are opposite those that founded this country.
Which brings us to the content of this post: the violation of the Constitution by the president and his Republican Guard, which, I observe still, no critics of the piece have yet dared engage. . . because they can’t.
“There is a war on Terror and you are fighting on the side of the terrorists. You are guilty of sedition. Turn yourself in immediately.”
The terror, like charity, starts at home.
Amen.
“I truly believe a dialogue with reasonable discourse is possible between our two camps, but not if we resort to name calling-me included.”
You are as deluded in that misapprehension as they are in all of theirs. Welcome to American democracy, where you make war on your neighbors at home instead of abroad.
Wow — just sent a letter to both my Senators explaining exactly what you wrote because their past responses on my concern on the NSA and various other issues of this administration have been the “balance of national security” — a frickin’ Repub talking point coming from my two Democratic senators. The example I used is that in 2002 10 times as many people died from fire arms than died on 9/11, but I do not see the right to bear arms being taken away from us.
“They hate us for our freedoms . . . “
Except, apparently, for the freedom from government searches except when a warrant has been obtained and signed by a judge.
“They hate us for our freedoms . . . “
Except, apparently, for the freedom to pass laws and expect the executive branch to follow and enforce them as written (as opposed to how the executive wishes they had been written).
“They hate us for our freedoms . . . “
Except, apparently, for the freedom to be Islamic, to judge by some of the comments being made here.
you are the one making war not I arnicus- you are given a chance to talk as a reasonable man with resonable dialogue- and you choose to close your mind, your fear is understandable we are threatened, but not from without.
There is no war on terror-as has been stated over and over by various people here. Terror is an ideology. You cannot wage a war against an idea with bombs and bullets. Terror is also amorphous, it has no definitive locality, if it did, it would not exist as terror, but as an army inflicting terror. This is still a free country and sedition for not believing something, and speaking against it is still permitted, dissent is the lifes blood of freedom. What is truly frightening is that you believe this is sedition and would take our democracy away in the blink of an eye because we don’t believe as you-that is not democracy that is totalitarian government and has no place in America.
I don’t think you [Fues Fission] know whereof I’m am from coming. There is no speaking with, or debating the mindset of, “the enemy”. Whoever that enemy may be. The only sane thing you can do is isolate him, and let him die a natural death because no sane man will join his ranks. That holds equally true for George Bush and his ever diminishing followers as it does for Osama bin Laden’s. Although bin Laden’s followers are obviously growing as long as Bush is able to make that happen. Unfortunately, he still is able to do that.
It belongs to the genius of a great political leader to make even adversaries far removed from one another seem to belong to single category, because in weak and uncertain characters the knowledge of having different enemies can only too readily lead to the beginning of doubt in their own right. Once the wavering mass sees itself in a struggle against too many enemies, objectivity will put in an appearance, throwing open the question whether all others are really wrong and only their own movement are in the right. And this brings about the first paralysis of their own power. Hence a multiplicity of different adversaries must always be combined so that in the eyes of one’s own supporters the struggle is directed against only one enemy.
Adolf Hitler, Mein Kampf
There is only A War of Terror.
Arnicus what I did was attribute to you someone elses statement for that I apolgize. And now I truly retire from the fight here.
looseprophead, i’m sorry about your losses and grateful for your wisdom.
The War on Terror is B.S. because Francis Fukuyama said that after the Cold War ended the PNAC originally made China the “new enemy”. What would the war have been called then? Bill Kristol even called 9-11 a “godsend”. The Patriot Act, Homeland Security, FEMA, etc. were set up a long time ago to take away our civil liberties while corporations profit from imperialism.
Racism is an important part of this discussion because without it, the US couldn’t declare war on any countries. We only attack non-white countries such as Vietnam, Afghanistan, Iraq, etc. We may declare war on countries such as Syria, Korea or China. So racism is not an important discussion just for American citizens but for preventing wars. The US succeeded in brainwashing us with stereotypes about Arabs to justify the War on Terror. Stereotypes have been used justify colonialism and imperialism since the late 1700s and as a result, African, Latin and Asian countries were colonized.
Even more important is a national discussion on masculinity. The US has a machismo problem. War is our solution to everything.
For readers of this thread I would like to highly recommend the BBC program which never aired in the US but is really essential viewing: “The Power of Nightmares”. The Wikipedia page has links for online viewing, or just google for the title, or use one of the P2P search engines.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T…..Nightmares
The Power of Nightmares, subtitled The Rise of the Politics of Fear, is a BBC series of documentary films, written and produced by Adam Curtis.
This documentary argues that during the 20th Century politicians lost the power to inspire the masses, and that the optimistic visions and ideologies they had offered were perceived to have failed. The film asserts that politicians consequently sought a new role that would restore their power and authority. Writer Adam Curtis, who also narrates the series, declares in the film’s introduction that “Instead of delivering dreams, politicians now promise to protect us: from nightmares”. To illustrate this Curtis compares the rise of the American neoconservatives and radical Islamists, believing that both are closely connected; that some popular beliefs about these groups are inaccurate; and that both movements have benefited from exaggerating the scale of the terrorist threat.

Hey numbnuts…Psssst…numbnuts…I seem to recall Lincoln suspending habeas corpus and the Roosevelt Administration putting US citizens in camps. But, I digress.
Delusional lying moonbats. They’re a riot!
My dear Pachacutee,
“Which brings us to the content of this post: the violation of the Constitution by the president and his Republican Guard, which, I observe still, no critics of the piece have yet dared engage. . . because they can’t.”
When one hires an appraiser
to “appraise” one’s property, what good is that number? it’s no good. Only when one whips out his/her checkbook and is willing to pay a certain price is the property truly appraised. Who says the President violated the constiitution? You? That’s only an “appraisal.” Until charges are brought, and the case is abjudicated, and he is found guilty will that “appraisel” become fact.
So far that hasn’t happened and, like I said when we slept as Alito was being confirmed, “check mate.”
p.s. by the way, I’m on your side
thomas @ 1:31 pm (#366) – I love the alarmism here. There’s no war on terror! There’s no war on terror! Pay no attention to the Islamofacists willing to chop your heads off!
Yes, we’re the alarmists. Please go back to wetting your pants about people who are about to chop off your head.
Even though the Earth’s temperature has only risen one degree in the past 120 years!
The temperature has been going up steadily for the last few centuries, and the rate of change has been going up since the start of industrialization. In fact, now that we’ve largely eliminated particulate pollution, it’s going to go up even faster.
Don’t you ever get tired of not knowing what you’re talking about?
Substitute the dictionary deffinition for “terror,” which is “great fear.”
It’s harder to talk about a war on great fear. There are just too many fear mongers about including this administration, what used to be called Madison Avenue, the Republican Party and any one else trying to sell something.
Going after Bin Laden was a police matter. It’s just if you make people fearful, with a war on great fear, it’s so much easier to swindle folks.
There is no longer a war on terror, because the “war” is over, and the terrorists have already won.
Anytime someone gets “worried” or “scared” or “afraid” or has their general anxiety level raised because of the vague threat of The Other, in this case “those bad people who want to destroy America” from the Middle East, then you have given away your power and control over to them. And when you give away your own sense of power and control to some mysterious Middle Eastern bugaboo, because they “might” hurt “us”, or “you”, or “America”, or “your children”, or “your grandma”, or the mall, or the local McDonalds, or the nearest nuclear power plant, then you have already given up and let the terrorists come into your personal life to wreak havoc upon it.
As long as the Bush administration continues to effectively maintain an air of fear and general anxiety throughout our country, based upon an isolated event on 9/11, and as long as you swallow it, every single day, then the terrorists have done what they set out to do — “terrorize” us. And with the Bush administration continually working to keep you worried and afraid of The Other, whether it’s terrorists, or pedophiles, or immigrants, or gays who want to get married, or “liberals”, or Democrats, then in a sense, not only have the terrorists won, but the Bush administration has too, because you have fallen for their ruse, again and again and again.
What the Democrats need to do is actually illuminate the real differences -
We have Patriots who believe in the rule of law and in the sanctity of the constitution, in honesty and open government.
We have Non-Patriots who believe that rules and laws do not pertain to them, that the constitution is a piece of paper to be legally challenged, and believe that dishonesty and secrecy are traits to be admired.
Forget Democrats and Republicans, forget liberals and conservatives, just support the patriots.
Your post is absolutely awesome Dude
Sort of like the war on drugs. The politicians and the spooks move more friggin drugs than CVS, Walgreens and Echerd combined
If it wasnt for drugs are economy would collapse. These ass holes are trying to do the same thing with Terror. Bwahahaha what a friggin shell game.
Just say NO to all the terror BS

A great and timely post. Thank you.
‘You cannot have a war on an abstract noun. “Terrorism” is that. It’s like a war on bad temper. “Oh yes, I really want to join that battle. Where do we start?” It is semantically stupid, and actually in practice it’s diabolical.’ Gore Vidal.
Oh, and Beef: it’s the War on SOME Drugs.
It’s so good to find someone else out there who realizes it’s all a huge hoax. Most people don’t remember the months before 9/11 when Bush’s popularity was sinking, and there were people saying he needed a war to stop the slide. And low and behold what do we get? No one has noticed he hasn’t made a statement since then without saying 9/11 and war on terror in the same sentence. He has managed to exploit people’s irrational fears. I tell people all the time as a black man living in south Los Angeles, I have more of a chance of being killed or hurt by a cop, or some idiot driving down the freeway than being attacked by a terrorist.

Pachacutec, thank you.
Hey numbnuts%u2026Psssst%u2026numbnuts%u2026I seem to recall Lincoln suspending habeas corpus and the Roosevelt Administration putting US citizens in camps. But, I digress.
The former has been authoritatively repudiated by the Supreme Court and the latter is regarded as a shameful blot on our national honor. Your hero, Saint Ronald Reagan, said this about it:
In 1988, President (and former California governor) Ronald Reagan officially apologized for the internment, on behalf of the U.S. government. The official apology admitted that the relocation was based on “race prejudice, war hysteria, and a failure of political leadership”, and beginning in 1990, the government paid reparations to surviving internees
So your point would be what, exactly?
Delusional lying moonbats. They’re a riot!
Uneducated, uninformed wingnuts. They don’t know the first thing about this country’s history or what it stands for.
The whole country is going to know that you moonbats are all traitors when the Boogeymen start blowing up buildings and killing all those innocent children.
Oops, I forgot, that was a wingnut who did that.
Anyway, you moonbats are nothing but a bunch of Boogeyman sympathizers. You make me puke! The Constitution is the least sacrifice we can make because we’re at WAR! WAR! Do you hear me!!!!
Bow down before our COMMANDER IN CHIEF, President George WMD Bush!
wow, i’ve been away for awhile…. just catching up on some missed posts
thanks pach, i’ve thought that the “war on terror” has been a smoke screen for a long time. an excuse to raid the treasury and gut the constitution. good on ya.
and calm down all, remember what yoda says ….
Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.
Be afraid. Be very afraid.
There’s a terrorist behind every Bush.
You nailed it again, Pach (#160).
I have waited five years for this– to see right-wing neocon nutjobs come completely unhinged.
I might –just might– stoop to watching Faux News every now and then at 8:00 and 9:00 to revel in watching O’Reilly and Hannity have conniptions.

First let me say I agree with everything Pachacutec has written.
Second I am surprised no one, including the Freeps and footballers, jumped on this:
Way back at 247
looseheadprop says:
Memeorial (sic) Day was begun to commemorate the fallen of WWI not WWII.
You are thinking of November 11. Which the rest of the world celebrates as Armistice Day. Us fat overstuffed Americans, wanting one last day to BBQ, celebrate it on the closest Monday.
The rest of the world commemorates the day and even the hour that the guns went silent ending World War One. That day and hour are the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.
Memorial Day is in commemoration of all those who died during the US Civil War.

As for the war on terror. When does it start?
I have been patiently waiting for lo these many years, for someone to explain to me how firing on our planes was a Causus Beli.
Will someone, anyone, who believes that firing on our planes was sufficient cause to invade, please show me where the authority to establish the No Fly Zone came from, please? And I don’t want passive voiced “UN directives”, or “an anlysis by (X) shows…”. I want the UN resolution that established the no fly zone, and set the parameters under which it operated.
Dodges beginning with “Are you saying that we shouldn’t have protected innocent Iraqis?” will be ignored as the drivel they are.
Get help folks…
The psychology of some of the Bush Haters is pretty cut and dried. They hate Bush because he stands between them and the implementation of their collectivist “utopian” vision. I have no time to waste on them, except to note that their intentions are deliberately and decidedly malevolent toward this country. They want it to fail at anything and everything it does and they openly cheer for the barbarians at the gate.
They are indistinguishable from the barbarians we are actively fighting, with the only difference being that they have different ideas about which group of thugs will be in charge of the “utopia”. They prefer themselves–a more secularly-oriented set of thugs–to rule.
But what about the average person on the street who has, or has come to have a visceral hatred of President Bush? Perhaps they simply didn’t vote for him in 2000, believing the media propaganda or caricature of his intellect and capabilities; or perhaps they simply didn’t like him because he was from the opposition party, or a Texan. or any other number of normal reasons.
It seems to me that the Democrats and the Left have used their continuous propaganda well, but there is a also a strong personal psychological factor involved in being able to convince normally sane people that the source of all evil in the world is George W. Bush.
After 9/11, in many cases, even a mild dislike of “W” rapidly morphed into the ferocious Bush hatred we are now all familiar with. The opposition to a conservative Republican; and reasonable disagreement with his policies became a swooning hysteria; and an unmitigated, deranged hatred with all the accompanying paranoid delusions.
Virginia Postrel recounted this insight:
When I was in New York a few weeks ago, a friend in the magazine business told me he thinks the ferocious Bush hating that he sees in New York is a way of calming the haters’ fears of terrorism. It’s not rational, but it’s psychologically plausible–blame the cause you can control, at least indirectly through elections, rather than the threats you have no control over. I thought of that insight today when I glanced at Maureen Dowd’s column and read this sentence, “Maybe it’s because George Bush is relaxing at his ranch down there (again) while Osama is planning a big attack up here (again).”
That is the voice of a petulant child, angry that she has a tummy ache while Daddy is at work or Mommy is visiting a friend, or the voice of a grouchy wife angry that she has a migraine while her husband is out coaching the kids’ baseball team. You’re upset that you’re in pain (we’ve all been there), so you get mad at someone whose presence wouldn’t make the pain any better. No mature student of politics believes the president of the United States goofs off on vacation. It’s not the kind of job you escape. George Bush may be completely insane to voluntarily. spend July in Texas–as opposed to Bill Clinton’s favored coastal retreats–but Osama bin Laden is no more or less a threat than in Bush were in Washington. But if blaming Bush makes people feel better, safer, or at least able to focus their anger on someone they can hurt, they’ll blame Bush.
The number of things that Bush has been blamed for in this world since 9/11 (even acts of God like Tsunamis, hurricanes and other natural disasters) is the stuff of major comedy. You name the horrible event, and he is identified as the etiologic agent.
He is blamed when he does something (anything) and he is blamed when he does nothing. He is blamed for things that ocurred even before he was President, as well as everything that has happened since. He is blamed for things he says; and for things he doesn’t say.
What makes Bush Hatred completely insane however, is the almost delusional degree of unremitting certitude of Bush’s evil; while simultaneously believing that the TRUE perpetrators of evil in the world are somehow good and decent human beings with the world’s intersts at heart.
This psychological defense mechanism is referred to as “displacement”.
One way you can usually tell that an individual is using displacement is that the emotion being displaced (e.g., anger) is all out of proportion to the reality of the situation. The purpose of displacement is to avoid having to cope with the actual reality. Instead, by using displacement, an individual is able to still experience his or her anger, but it is directed at a less threatening target than the real cause. In this way, the individual does not have to be responsible for the consequences of his/her anger and feels more safe–even thought that is not the case.
This explains the remarkable and sometimes lunatic appeasement of Islamofascists by so many governments and around the world, while they trash the US and particularly Bush. It explains why there is more emphasis on protecting the “rights” of terrorists, rather than holding them accountable for their actions (thier actions, by the way are also Bush’s fault, according to those in the throes of BDS). Our soldiers in Iraq are being killed because of Bush–not because of terrorist intent and behavior. Terrorist activity itself is blamed on Bush no matter where it occurs.
It isn’t even a stretch of the imagination for some to blame 9/11 on Bush. This is the insane “logic” of most psychological defense mechanisms. They temporarily spare you from the painful reality around you and give you the illusion that you are still in control.
This is exactly the illusion/delusion circulating in the minds of many of the Bush Haters. They want desperately to forget that there is a tidal wave of terror reverberating around the world and to pretend that everything is America’s and Bush’s fault. If that is true, then they will still be in control of events.
So what do they do? They lionize terrorists like Zarqawi (”freedom-fighters”). They explain away the horror and brutality by refering to them as “insurgents” and “militants”. They support Palestinian suicide bombings as justified and see the Palestinians–not as independent agents acting of choice, but as victims of America and Israel.
They sincerely believe that Osama is a reasonable person and seek dialog with him; but that Bush is not. They threaten violence toward Bush and hold demonstrations; and placate and enable those who would implement Sharia Law in their country without a qualm. Hundreds of their fellow countrymen are murdered by terrorists, but they demand that troops be pulled out of Iraq (thinking that if they hadn’t cooperated with the evil BushHitler, their countrymen would have been spared).
Rather than blame the terrorists; rather than admiting they have to take action against them; their fear is transformed to anger and displaced onto President Bush. If everything is his fault, then the reality of what happened does not have to be faced (this also explains the intense psychological denial that these same individuals tend to have about 9/11).
Bush becomes the “criminal mastermind”, so devious, so evil, that everything he says is a “lie”, everything he does is part of a vast global consipiracy. His family has intimate ties to Bin Laden and the Saudis; He is trying to enrich his oil business friends; He is trying to avenge the insult to his father by getting rid of Saddam; He plans world domination etc. etc. I could go on an on, but you get the point.
What is most funny is that these psychologically naiive individuals simultaneously think of Bush as this “criminal mastermind”–a genius of evil; and also as a complete moron who isn’t capable of uttering a sentence without making a hash of it; or that his brain is controlled by the equally evil Karl Rove.
The cognitive dissonance required to have all these contradictory beliefs swirling around in one’s brain is astonishing. But besides the primary function it serves to erase from consciousness what is happening in the world today, it is serving a secondary purpose–it makes them feel in control of what might come.
They can predict with the complete accuracy of the delusional mind that whatever happens–whatever horror is unleased by Al Qaeda or Hamas or Islamic Jihad–was caused by President Bush’s actions/inactions/intentions (take your pick).
They can conduct a brave protest march against the evil Bush…but clearly they don’t dare protest real terror or terrorist acts the way that the Jordanians or the Lebanese did, for example. The terrorists are simply poor, misunderstood individuals who have been oppressed by…Bush. Get rid of Bush (or America; or Israel) and voila! Problem solved!
It would be a foolproof defense against the threat, except…except…if it weren’t for … reality. It would be foolproof, except that the REAL horror; the REAL evil will just not go away. The REAL evil just gets bolder and more aggressive. Like the Nazis in the last century, the REAL evil will not be appeased, and is aware of this psychological weakness inherent in their enemies. In fact, they count on it – because by exploiting it is the only way the terrorists can win.
As I said at the beginning of this piece, those who are mindful and deliberate in their attacks and are using them for personal political gain; or to advance a totalitarian agenda are simply evil. But there are many people who normally have some degreee of goodwill and sense. Those are the people I am trying to wake up. Think and ask yourselves– what you are doing? Look around at what is going on in the world.
It is not Bush who is lopping off the heads of schoolgirls in Indonesia. It is not Karl Rove who is exhorting mindless minions to explode at wedding parties in Jordan. It is not Bush’s policies that have induced immigrant Muslims to riot in France.
It is the cold-hearted ruthlessness of a fanatical ideology that intends to wipe our civilization off the map. It will not be appeased, and the more you feed it with appeasement, the stronger and bolder it gets. Please note, that since 9/11 there have not been any direct attacks on the U.S. homeland. They have settled for smaller “hit and run” targets of opportunity. Why? Because they rightly fear what we might do if another attack occurred (and besides, they have the MSM and the Left to wage their attacks on the homeland).
This is not to say that such attacks might not occur when the enemy has the sense that America will never fight back. There are many who give them that assurance daily.
As a psychiatrist I work with patients who use maladaptive psychological defenses all the time. The goal of treatment is to help them develop insight and self awareness and begin to take responsibility for their own lives and actions; and to face reality–no matter how painful or unpleasant–not to close their eyes and hope and wish it will go away.
In other words, to act like mature adults and deal with it.
As long as they focus all their energy on hating Bush and act like the whiny petulant and angry child, who expects daddy to instantaneously make everything better– or else they won’t like it; then they don’t ever have to act like mature adults and cope with reality in a mature fashion. It is soooo much easier to blame everything on daddy.

You don’t have to be a Bush hater to appreciate checks and balances and the rule of law. Liberal Left, Righteous Right, Forward Front, Backwards Back, Tyrannical Top, Bummed-Out Bottom, and all of us folks in between all should have a voice. If you don’t trust the Diebold voting machines, you can still trust the cash register at least. Don’t forget to vote there too for the changes you desire.
