(guest post by Taylor Marsh)
If you haven’t been following this story, welcome to the latest Iranian intrigue misinformation push meant to move us closer to a strike against Iran. That’s my assessment so far, with more questions popping up and few answers, the further into it I look. So, let’s unwind it (but make sure you read the update).
After reading about it early last Friday, I spoke with Aaron Breitbart, a senior researcher of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, who was eager to confirm it, using words like "throwback" to the Nazi era, "very true" and "very scary," as well as offering that the dean and founder of the Center, Rabbi Marvin Hier, had been on the phone for "four hours" confirming the story. As someone said to me today, it makes you wonder what the Rabbi was doing on the phone for 4 hours. After all, how long does it take to confirm something so incredibly frightening?
Reporting that the Simon Weisenthal Center confirmed Taheri’s story made it around the web and beyond, as did subsequent posts and follow ups, in which you will find all the details. Because when an organization like that confirms something as alarming as the Iranian government passing a law to identify Jews and non-Muslims, it rightly causes four alarm Holocaust revisited hysteria. That was the intention.
After the story was thoroughly debunked, I put in another call to Breitbart late on Friday, then called back again today. I wanted to get a comment from him about the discrediting of the story and see if I could ascertain why the Simon Wiesenthal Center would unabashedly back such an outrageous falsehood. He still hasn’t answered his phone or returned my calls. I was eventually transferred to Avra Shapiro, Director of Public Relations, who said someone would get back to me. They have not.
A conversation earlier today inspired me to look closer at the facsimile, including the multiple times and dates. There is not only a cc to Ms. Shapiro, but also a Michele Alkin, the Director of Communications for the Simon Wiesenthal Center. I’ve forwarded the fax to someone I hope can take it further. We shall see. The names at the top are above the main text, which looks like it has been cut off and was originally sent to the Rabbi Marvin Hier. This is what appears next.
Rabbi Cooper,
As per our conversation, I’m looking at running this but I have not been able to confirm its veracity. Particularly, I want to make sure that the part saying Jews will have to wear a yellow stripe and Christians a red stripe is in fact true. Now the law has not yet come into effect, but it is moving closer to becoming law and I think we need to draw attention and much of it to this right now.
Any assistance you can give us in confirming this info would be much appreciated.
Best,
jte
The initials refer to John Turley-Ewert of the National Post, which used to be owned by Conrad Black, but is now controlled by two brothers of the Asper family that I’ve been told are actively involved with Israel’s Likud party. The National Post has an editorial policy similar to Brit Hume’s at Fox "News." They are interchangeable and far leaning to the right. But the above section I emphasized seems to show that not only is Turley-Ewert asking for confirmation of the Iranian badge story, but a sort of collaboration on promoting the story. Someone I spoke to today confirmed that was indeed their assessment, too.
But who got the Simon Wiesenthal Center to stick their necks out on this bogus Iranian badge story, risking their very reputation and funding credibility, and who had what to gain by doing so?
Could this story have something to do with Douglas Feith’s Office of Strategic Influence PSYOPS plan to plant false stories in foreign press? Sure, that was supposed to be shut down, but was it? After all, Canada is foreign press and once a story gets printed it’s all stops out for spreading the propaganda.
”Our inability to seize the initiative in the ‘War of Ideas’ with Al Qaeda is perhaps our most significant shortcoming so far in the war against terrorism,” said the document, dated Sept. 17, 2003. ”We do not fully understand Al Qaeda and its relationship to supportive communities in the Islamic world, and so are not yet able to develop an effective strategy for countering its propaganda in those communities, let alone for winning the information campaign in the war against terrorism.”
The document said one goal was to establish a ”road map for creating an effective D.O.D. capability to design and conduct effective strategic influence and operational and tactical perception-management campaigns.”
Pentagon and Bogus News: All Is Denied (Times Select, dated 12.5.03)
In the aftermath of the Iraq war, it’s important to find out the facts regarding the obvious drumbeat for a strike against Iran, especially since we know the lengths to which President Bush and his administration will go to make their case. Asking important questions is a good place to start.
UPDATE: Amir Taheri, author of the now discredited article, has been pressured to issue a press release.
Regarding the dress code story it seems that my column was used as the basis for a number of reports that somehow jumped the gun. As far as my article is concerned I stand by it. The law has been passed by the Islamic Majlis and will now be submitted to the Council of Guardians. A committee has been appointed to work out the modalities of implementation. … …
PRESS RELEASE: AMIR TAHERI ADDRESSES QUERIES ABOUT DRESS CODE STORY

A friend made it clear to me this weekend that her fiance was about to be sent to Iran. (I repeatedly asked for clarification. “Not Iraq,” she said. “Iran.”) Is it possible that this thing is so far along that we are already conveying such departure info to troops?
Mike V, maybe a macro for next time. ;)
It seems pretty obvious to me this is the Rumsfeld DoD Office of Propaganda planting bullshit so American press will pick up the disinformation and report is as fact. If I were an elected official I’d demand the Pentagon prove they didn’t start this story. At this stage of the game one must assume it’s all coming from the poisonous labor of the Bush government.
Digby has a take on the same fake right wing noise;

Great work, Taylor — and perplexing that the Simon Wiesenthal Center may have been pulled into a story that was bogus. More puzzling that they have given you the run-around on responding. I’ll be very interested to see how this turns out in the end.
bonzarella, we’ve had boots on the ground in Iran for some time now, as reported by Sy Hersh and others. Whether this represents any real change would depend on what the fiance’s specialty is, and how many others are being sent with him.
Quite possible, bonzarella, which was fully telegraphed when Seymour Hersh’s article appeared in April.

Hey, Christy, thanks so much. Frankly, right now, with what I’ve learned over the last few days, I’m wondering if they were actually pulled at all.
Great post Taylor – the ramifications of this story are clear: we’ll hear about it from Limbaugh, Hannity, O’Reilly, and Malkin in every comment they make between now and the day Bush decides to enter us into another preventive war.
This is a truly disgraceful instance of falsified muckraking. I’d like the hawks who want to start another war with other people’s children to watch Baghdad ER before banging the drums of war again.
http://www.sourcewatch.org/ind…..ourceWatch
I often check out SourceWatch. Alas, specific page links don’t work on reposting. So, if you go to the addy above (main site I think) and type Asper or “Conrad Black” into the search box, there is more info about them.

As for the Asper brothers, I don’t mean to sound clandestine, but I got that information on background today from a reliable source who requested anonymity.
If I was to go all “Black Helicopter/Tinfoil Hat” over here… I wonder what phone company you used to call the Wiesenthal center? According to Wired’s latest, the NSA equipment that’s been installed all over the Us can be used in all sorts of creative ways since it sits in the phone exchanges themselves…
[/tinfoil]
thanks, Taylor, I didn’t know about the Weisenthal center going with it, and also suspect the DOD and PNAC gang have a hand in it. And the outcome will simply be more aggressive 101st Rah-Rah booyah nonsense, more partisan nastiness and more of Bush telling us these are “bad people”, Right? Reasoned, well thought out debunking by goopers, not so much.
Have to sleep now, couldn’t sleep at all last night. I want to leave this OT link about end of life doulas is anyone is interested. The slide show isn’t so great, but this is a fantastic program.

there are special ops running around now inside iran, presumably confirming targeting sites and whatever other mayhem they may be able to accomplish.
re the planting of the story — recall how efficiently that method of planting the story in a foreign paper (usually brit) worked during the clinton years and more recently and to much more grave effect, the run-up to the iraq invasion, that was then picked up here by the chatterboxes where it eventually made its way to convential wisdom.
the nypost and ny sun both ran the story this weekend — both rightwing papers. is anyone aware if foxnews picked it up? it almost seems as if the story was targeting the jewish community in nyc.
By the way, many things public about the Asper brothers, including CanWest: http://www.canwestglobal.com/home.html
Just wrote a snotty note to the St. Pete Times about their editorial deploring, yes, deploring! of this terrible act. Suggested that they might try a bit of source verification. . .
For you all: the St. Petersburg Times is owned by the Poynter Institute, which is–supposedly and historically–a touchstone institution of journalist integrity. I’ve watched it go the way of NPR. . . Seems like this long-time progressive bastion has been sold out to the almighty profit motive. Damned shame.

Taylor- I didn’t think you were being clandestine at all. I am trying to do several things at once. And, thanks for the great article and the added link.

…out beyond the West Bank, where you do not vacation, the Aspers will already be turning the truth inside out. They turn in clusters, because their roots connect them….
The Fascist spin machine is whirling like a dervish these days. Listen to the war mongering opinion mind-melders like Gingrich and Kristol and they are all on board with doing a strike in Iran.
As I have said many times. Strike Iran, say bye-bye to the economy and the world as we know it. A bomb attack or Iran ENDS nothing, it starts something.
But, that is just what the Cheney-Hallburton War Mill wants.
Endless war for endless peace.

As to Lenin’s Tomb, a lot of people had caught up with the story by Saturday.
Thanks, TeddySanFran.

on Sunday, Wolfie was interviewing the current Israeli Prime Minister and he was really going to town against Iran! All kinds of canards . . . He stopped just short of bringing up Iranians sacrifing Israeli boys for their blood to make pita bread or some such…
Conrad Black? Another scum in Fitzgerald’s sites.
The legal proceedings against Black turned criminal in November 2005. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Chicago charged Black with eight counts of mail fraud and wire fraud relating to the alleged diversion of millions from Hollinger International. Black pleaded not guilty and was released after posting a $20 million US bond.
In December 2005, prosecutors laid four more criminal charges against him, including racketeering, obstruction of justice and money laundering.

Hi Taylor, thanks for posting this story here.
I heard on NPR today that the new Israeli PM will be visiting here soon. The idea that this is a product of opportunistic Israeli disinformation is starting to take hold in my mind, despite my insane aversion to conspiracy theories.
This could be just a coincidence, of course. There’s certainly plenty of reason to suspect Israel’s involvement already.
http://www.npr.org/templates/s…..Id=5420683
“Michele Alkin”? You’ve GOT to be kidding me.
Does the Wiesenthal Center also employ Brit Ume, Bill O’Eilly, Matt Rudge, and Ben Omenech?
Punaise- okay, I’ll be a scold. This story has all kind of resonances. I usually love your puns, but these didn’t sit quite right with me. Not a joking matter, the present story, or the links to Nazi Germany. Best, VG

All kinds of canards…
the duck stops here.
The Simon Wiesenthal Center ran point on the story earlier this year that falsely said Hugo Chavez had used the blood libel in a Xmas Eve speech.
It was bullshit. Easily verifiable as bullshit. The usual suspects ran the story as the Wiesenthal Center’s claim. They may well have been fed this story by the same source.
Hey, cujo359, I’m thrilled Jane extended the invitation.
Just speculating here, no proof at all yet, but I’m thinking Republican neocons in cahoots with Likud.
Valley Girl 46 – fair ’nuff.
“Could this story have something to do with Douglas Feith’s Office of Strategic Influence PSYOPS plan to plant false stories in foreign press? Sure, that was supposed to be shut down, but was it”?
Of course it was. Soon after John Poindexter’s data mining operation bit the dust.
Taylor, haven’t read the post yet, but its next on my TODO list. But before I forget, the badge story and the NYT Book Review piece go hand-in-hand. The NYTBR piece is devastating. The badge story is target to contribs into the PAC.
As if you have to make up shit about the Mullahs to make them look bad. They are tantamount to Pat Robertson with a Koran.

Strange that Fitz is involved with Conrad Black too.
Ehud Olmert, the new Prime Minister of Israel, has always tried to project a moderate and reasonable image yet as Mayor of Jerusalem that city shifted quite to the right and ultra-Orthodox. During Blitzer’s interview, he was banging the wardrums loudly against Iran. Wolfie kept feeding him his straight lines. It was such obvious propaganda…
punaise (30) — not quite as punny as you might think…Asper/Aspen happened often in recording family names.
Every time I see the name Asper I’ve wondered…
the office of strategic influence is gone in name only, rummy said as much when it was closed down. the same MO of using ex pats to smear the current regime is underway. the freedom support act is sure to pass, just a formality at this point seeking iran be ‘held accountable’

“He surfaced at the end of last month in Dubai, where 24 hours later he was met by the leading American neoconservative, Richard Perle. Fakhravar was whisked to America last weekend and has already met congressmen and Bush officials. He said he was in Washington to spread one message only: “Regime change,” he said, breaking from Farsi into English to deliver it. “
“Ehud Olmert, the new Israeli prime minister, arrives in Washington tomorrow for his first summit with Bush. “Olmert will try to get Bush’s approval for an Israeli military strike on Iran in the event that the West backs down,” a well-informed Israeli source said. If diplomacy fails, however, the view inside the Pentagon is that American airstrikes would be quicker and more effective than anything the Israelis could muster. “
Punaise is one of the reasons I read here…I have a quote that I misplaced just this second that descirbes him/her…he/she gives me a reconsent of mirth in words that allows me not to scream out the front door in a very loud voice.
VG: sorry, but I missed something. If we shut down punaise because the topic is serious, will we heard from him again? On fdl?
TSF, 58 – no problema. you can’t get rid of me that easily…. :~)
Have read it.
Freakin’ awesome. Now we are getting somewhere.
we need to remember that our troops stationed in iraq are sitting ducks for iran’s shiite allies in iraq if we attack iran — it’s great that wolfie again wants to treat young americans as cannon fodder
They’re getting sloppy, or under way too much scrutiny. The Dan Rather setup must have gone to their heads.
Still, it won’t keep the wingers from repeating it ad nauseum as fact.
*ilson et al.
Over at the Simon Weisenthal Center, there is a breaking news section where Olmert is quoted as saying (no shit) that time before Iran gets the bomb “can be measured in months, not years.”
Do all these asses employ the same PR people? Or are these phrases sold by the pound.
My take is that Israel is in the know on the attack plans and is doing what it can to help with public opinion — IN America.
And Simon is not yet dead a year…. I had lunch with him once in Vienna, he would find this error — and this anti-Iran propoganda pushed in his name — reprehensible.
This is such a cynical saga. It feels like water torture…drip, drip, drip, every day…..they are just trying to wear us out.
And today, Cheney and his wife quietly slipped into northern California to do fundraising for Doolittle and Pombo, of all people! They are in knee deep with DeLay and Abramoff. Absoltely shameless. I’m betting Cheney also drops in on his good buddies at Bechtel. Nosh on some cocktail weenies and compare notes.
undercoverdick @ 61 -
Yup. And it can be done. But someone needs to understand each of those lives has utter trust in the integrity of their leaders.
annie @ 6:37 pm (#57) – Sonoma had it right a little earlier – renaming an unpopular or unsuccessful program and/or burying it in another program is an old Pentagon bureaucratic trick from way back. I’d be shocked if that particular disinformation program is actually, really dead. They have plenty of motivation to keep it going.
64: Cheney arrived at SFO Saturday nite, with no public schedule until today’s Doolittle fundraiser, the funds raised at which (per the Delay rule) can be used either for campaigning or for legal defense.
Got an expensive defense to mount? Call DeadEye!
“My take is that Israel is in the know “
ya think!
I was told by a reliable source that the Simon Wiesenthal Center bought the name to use for the organization from Mr. Wiesenthal, who then used the money to track Nazis. Expect more on this story very soon.

Here’s the thing. What is it about America that allowed this to come to pass? External? I don’t think so. I think it is a change where people came to expect that the ethics of the workplace are acceptable set of ethics for “greater” institutions.

” In fact, in November 2002, Rumsfeld stated in an interview that only the name of the office was abolished, that it still exists and continues to fulfill its original intended purposes. Much of the OSI’s responsibilities were shifted to the Information Operations Task Force” WHIG operated much the same way. these guys just creat their own reality, truth has no bearing, seriously.

Hi friends -
Leonard Cohen has an amazing new poem – audible on today’s Fresh Air at about 48 min into show (as heard on KALW).
I’m not worthy to interpret an avatar…..
but this was amazing.
TSF (and Punaise)- that was not my intention at all. I love Pun’s Puns. But the yellow star with Jude in the center got to me. I guess it just has too much resonance for me. I am not Jewish, but I have a dear friend (Jewish) born in Berlin who went through that time. I have been to the Holocaust Museum with him, and also with him saw Schindler’s List and Europa Europa on the big screen. He has told me that he would not have been willing to go to any of these “events” without my company. And, BTW, he has virtually nothing nice to say about Israel, especially its politics and the domination of the Likudniks.
For those of you who have not seen Europa Europa, I highly recommend it. (I trust most know about Schindler’s list, so no link provided.)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0099776/ (Europa, Europa)
More war crimes, more evidence for the Hague trials. Fascists have to be removed from power, it’s time these people were stopped. This neocon/Likud propaganda, Abu Gonzalez with his disgraceful attempt to threaten/intimidate the media.
This fucker is about to blow. Something big brewin folks, something wicked…can feel it in my bones^
I won’t say who, but I remember a converation with someone at Microsoft shortly after I started working there in 1984. He was a neighbor (that means apartments in those days) and me and I first wife would have him over sometimes for dinner and an evening. Often we would play Monopoly. (This isn’t a metaphor. I played Monolopy with him and my wife!).
During one of those games (or maybe before and after) I yacked at him about something that way striking me at the time. Coming out of Evergreen I had taken a class on the interaction between the scientific comunittee. And I asked C****, doesn’t MS have responibility to have a formal function to project the use of introduced technologies? C**** words to the effect – the world is on freefall and worrying about such things is a business dis-advantage. He was right.
More later (as SC says).

anon,
The Conrad Black case is what initally got me hooked to FDL even though I was an occasional reader before.
A t the time, the Black case was a big story here and when the scandal initally broke I wrote an email to the Privy council inquiring about his status and my objection to him being a member.
They responded with this:
Good morning
In response to your question, Mr. Black is a Member of the Queen’s Privy Council for Canada, which gives him the title “ Honourable” instead of the title “Right Honourable”. Currently, Mr. Black is facing at the moment criminal charges in the United States, but has not been convicted of any criminal act.
Thank you
General Inquiries / Demandes de renseignements généraux
Privy Council Office / Bureau du Conseil privé
I pissedoff’dly wrote back that the charges should be enough to at least grant a review of his status but they never responded.
You wouldn”t believe the perks that members of the privy council have, especially those in line with bushies.
Unbelievable.
“As if you have to make up shit about the Mullahs to make them look bad. They are tantamount to Pat Robertson with a Koran.”
That being said, the Iranians are no worse than half of the worlds leaders today.

U.S. Airstrike at Taliban Kills Civilians, Afghans Say
By RUHULLAH KHAPALWAK
KANDAHAR, Afghanistan, May 22 — American planes in pursuit of suspected Taliban fighters bombed a village in southern Afghanistan on Sunday night and early Monday, killing 16 civilians and wounding 15, among them women and children, the local governor and villagers said Monday.
The American-led coalition said it had conducted a “successful operation” in the area, and had killed from 20 to 80 Taliban fighters in the bombing, which struck the village of Tolokan.
ATTENTION: Amir Taheri has been pressured to release a statement. It’s in the update at the bottom of my post.
What is the distinction exactly between truthiness and propaganda?
The current lie has a Cheneyesque air. It must have been known that this story would be debunked. Unlike murky nuclear programs, this is something that could be decided on a clear yes or no basis. So the only rationale for it is the idea that many people will hear the lie but not all will hear the debunking. I’m not Cheney was involved. Think of this lie as more of a homage to him.

Evenin’, Miz Taylor! I hope that you are well.
Will you be joining us for Late Nite this evening? Per an invitation from the lovely Jane H, I have a post slotted into the publication queue and counting down to 11:00pm (ET) when it goes live. “The Real Party of Death” is the title. I’ll let you guys guess what it’s about.
I’m all excited and tingly just waiting.
GSD,
Libya “invited” the oil companies to “help” them with their oil industry. If I were a cynic, I would believe this made the difference between them and Iran
moi, thanks for the info about Black. These guys are all connected at the roots, aren’t they? The Next Hurrah has an interesting post about the badge story. Guess who has a connection to it? Bolton and Judy, Judy, Judy.

I don’t think he deserves to be punaised so harshly.
If indeed this is is, as it seems, pure propaganda, let’s go to the wayback machine – June 2001, and the Taliban.
From USA today the headline: “Taliban: Hindus must wear identity label” http://www.usatoday.com/news/w…..banids.htm
And wasn’t the author of this, Jack Kelly disgraced, in part, for letting his religion interfere with his journalism?
I recall being appaled by this story at the time, which was also the time of blown-up Buddhas, I think…
If it was true of the Taliban, and I don’t recall that this story stopped the US from paying the Taliban for its poppy at the time, maybe that’s where somebody got the idea… Can’t you hear them now: babies torn form incubators- been there, done that. Or religious id armbands: hey nobody will remember that of all the Taliban’s sins! Geez.
Let the punaisement fit the crime.
Evening to you, TRex, I will try to stop by.
Hmmmm, subject? Why TRex, I just can’t imagine. ;-)
Whats up with McGuire (JOM)? I haven’t finished the post but, man, the indignation is amazing.
Come on, Taylor. I’m sure the gentleman from the Weisenthal Center who hasn’t returned your call is merely busy today, and will return it soon.
As to the Israelis, haven’t they denied ever, ever, ever being involved with disinformation, propaganda or espionage in the USA?
Don’t you realize, folks, that to question any of this is anti-Semitic?
It is not OK to question the motives of any policy of even the most extreme far right functionary of the Israeli government. To do so will only encourage the enemy, which is, of course Iran, at least for now….
ET,
History is replete with so many tales of oppressed who become oppressors.
-GSD
Of all the reasons given to invade Iraq, one that played a heavy role but was little articulated by the Bush administration was that it would make Israel safer. Saddam fired scuds at Israel in the first Gulf War and he may still have the potential to.
This may be why many elected Democrats went along with the war – they had constituants or doners saying asking them to make Israel safer.
It seems the best way to go forward on Iran is to convince Jews that Iran is a major threat to Israel. Witness the recent Cole/Hitchens on “Iran wanting to wipe Israel off the map”.
Once “immediate danger to Israel” gets implanted, then this can be transformed into “threat to the free world” and “threat to the US” which many elected Democrats will adopt to appease those who want a safer Israel.
Taylor Marsh @ 7:15 pm (#88) – jumped the gun???
I guess I need to consult my Israeli/English dictionary of idioms. People assumed the story was true. How is that jumping the gun?
My question is rhetorical, but if anyone thinks he can answer, go ahead.
Valley Girl 76: I’ve seen Europa Europa, it is excellent.
OT: Joe Klein is scheduled to be on the Marc Steiner talk show (WYPR, Baltimore) at 1:00 EST tomorrow (Tuesday). I don’t know enough details about what he’s written to be able to intelligently take him to task, other than that he’s “liberal” in the same sense that the corporate media is “liberal”. It’d be great if someone knowledgable could call in.
Edward. The base is thinking hard about what has happened to their base. And the base is about to strike back.
Basic gist of the story, if you will, is essentially the truth would it be known.
-Deadeye Dick Cheney, shotgunner of old men and war profiteer extraordinaire.
All poltics aside, just from a framework of strategy and gamesmenship, Bush and Dick are in a Pickle.

Oh, Ed*ard Teller, you’re right, he was probably just busy.
Cujo359 @ 102, “jumped the gun,” indeed. I may be a city girl now, but I was born in Missouri. I can smell horse s!*# a mile away!
Mary, your’e a gift.
I’m often tempted to support a nuclear first strike on this shithole nation simply for the way they treat their queers nevertheless the claven can not be trusted and belong in jail as the dangerous criminals they are.
Putting all this to one side is it not a certainty that the Spencerian Darwinian process of ME politics is leading inexorably up to a nuclear strike on Tel Aviv?
Maybe we should wargame a post apocalypse scenario for the survivors. Something like pay them all a million dollars and resettle them in the US, UK and Au?
I mean how much longer do we want this 80 year old dispute to drag on for?
And look at what its cost us!
A Euro-apartheid police state in the Middle east is unsustainable and must be ended. Surely we can all agree on that. Euro colonialism is unacceptable today regardless of the unique features behind the establishment of this one.
The last empire must cut it’s ties with the last colony. That is the burning issue of the day.
ET- I feel that it is important that the motives and aims of the Israeli government can now be questioned without necessarily getting the knee-jerk you are anti-Semitic comment. Granted, this kind of questioning is not wide-spread, but there is a tiny shift that seems important.
Have you guys seen this Fitz story from the WaPo yet?
http://www.washingtonpost.com/…..24_pf.html
Fitzmaz is getting closer, eh?

It’s actually a very interesting question how the Israelis are going to adjust their US policy given that they are now tied to the mast of a sinking ship. If they hang on too long they invite a more open discussion of US goals and policies in the Mideast, something they very much do not want.
well, helll-loo, let’s have a conversation America.
This particular propoganda has real potential to kill for a long time to come.
Bushco and Rice and Bolton are in it neck deep.
No way would the Iranian people or the religious leaders condone this kaka.
Histrionics do. not. work. anymore. i. pray.
If it smells like poop, it’s poop. Not to toot my own horn– but the moment I heard it, I thought “another mucho millions of taxpayers dollars down the hole with Condi and Karen and bushco’s and Olmert’s plan for Iran” Pure b.s.
But, she was just a pencil pusher. Joe Wilson was blabbing to every Fox News green room troll about his “spy” wife. She hadn’t been out in six years. The CIA didn’t tell Bob Novakl she was covert, so why wouldn’t he name her. If she didn’t want to be known, why do a magazine cover.
All those idiots pushing that theme still should be publicly pied by Al Pieda.

TRex #91….
We all know what the Republican party stands for already.
Death, Corruption, Fascism and Treason.
What else is there to know? I would not be surprised though to learn something new. I hope your 11pm is eastern time.

Instead, they’re being paid by Al Paeda.
Interesting Al-Jazeera article about Gulf nations working the diplomatic angle with Iran. Looks like the US is twisting the Arab States arms in the Bush Conglomerates march to war.
The Gulf States must be desperate to avoid any hostilites. People don’t vacation and invest in nuclear free fire zones.

Countdown to TRex late nite FDL. Yes, TRex is in the ET zone. He does not obey FDL clock rules.

Taheri: “Interestingly, the Islamic Republic authorities refuse to issue an
official statement categorically rejecting the concept of dhimmitude and the need for marking out religious minorities.”
They have also flat out refused to rule out indentured servitude of Martians as evidenced by their total silence on the matter.
Mack – perfection.
TAYLOR MARSH –
What is the current status of the story and the rebuttal / refutation?
Is there enough to take it to a MSM reporter?
Taylor, Amir Taheri is a fruitcake with one goal in mind: to launch a war against Iran. He’s been making stuff up on Iran since the ice age. I had a commenter on my blog peddle his WSJ article where he advocates zero dialogue with Iran. And here was my response.
Taheri is a favorite of the neo-cons (has been for a long time) and a member of Benador Associates with his buddy Richard Perle. It would not surprise me if he was on the payroll for a disinformation campaign (although he would gladly do it for free).
tryggyth – that would be mary who was the gift, not Mary ;-) I like to think it goes with the name though and I liked that post too.
I’ve noticed a few other mary/Mary-s lately, so I’m thinking of becoming MaryI.
One other thing, the Iranian parliament did consider a bill offering government incentives to companies that manufacture Islamic dress for women. The bill was advocating that Iranian women wear Islamic dress. It does not make it mandatory (as Iranians would reject it).
In that, the bill is symbolic and is very similar to the Republican push to make English the national language here. Its political pandering at its finest. Politics makes strange bedfellows indeed.
Perhaps Taheri decided he could use that bill as a germ to spin his lies.
Oilfieldguy- what a very nice compliment. Boysenberries? I’ll give you a serious answer. Yes!!! They grew wild around the area where I lived as a grad student at UCSC. And, the best pie I have ever made was a boysenberry peach pie. That just happened bec. there weren’t enough wild boysenberries around. If you ever want to try the combo, it is #1 on my pie list. Also, when I lived in the UK, I couldn’t get boysenberries, so I settled for Loganberry jam- and, as it turns out, loganberries are a hybrid of boysenberries and rasberries, created by Judge Logan of Santa Cruz somewhere near the end of the 1900s.
anon @ 54
Not just Fitz involved with Black. William Jeffress, Libby’s “attack the journalists” lawyer, either was or is representing Black (not sure which, and I have reason to believe Baker Botts would like to keep it secret one way or another).
Also, to clarify, Judy doesn’t have a direct connection with this badge story. But she is, apparently, working for Bolton these days. And she used to be on Benador’s roster, before her NYT colleagues complained so loudly that she quit that gig. At least in public. Any way to find out whether she’s back on the Benador gravy train?
undercover dick
There have been a number of people saying we need to withdraw troops in Iraq to do Iran (for two reasons–to get them out of the way and to free up troops to kill more people). Note what Bush and Poodle are chatting about.
tryggyth and Mary (Mary1)
Sorry for the confusion. I can be marytoo. But I am perplexed why nobody is connecting these two things…Have I missed something in all this discussion?
It’s interesting that this analysis questioning the bogus badge story assumes a connection to the Bush administration. My take is different. It has all the m.o. of an Israeli propaganda which is currently in full swing to help the Bush administration take action against Iran. During the propaganda period against Iraq, Israel propaganda played a very important role. Criminals have a certain m.o. because humans repeat the same patters. At least we know where the badge story is coming from.
Mack >”…indentured servitude of Martians…”
We Martians to be are never going to be servants for anyone cause we wish to leave such sillyness behind

EPUd, but the public response from the Wiesenthal Center after the first debunking was lame in the extreme, along the lines of ‘well, we’ll have to check, but it sounds like the sort of thing those nasty Iranians would do.’ For an organisation that defends against the blood libel, that’s just not good enough.
Dear FireDogLake:
#52 hit on something related: the NYTimes Review of Books devoted an inordinate amount of time to Walt & Meirshiemers(sp?) ‘treatment’ of the Israeli Lobby in their recent paper. Apparently nobody in this country (U.S.) would publish their paper (which proves their point…), so it was originally published in the London Times (I think). This created quite the firestorm from the usual prevaricators and censures. I’m imagining this (badge story) is re-enforcement management. On WhatReallyHappened recently, they ran a story which basically refutes much of the ‘established’ truths regarding the holocaust via the Red Cross’s appraisal (up to early 1945 I believe) of many of the camps, conditions, numbers, etc.
The whole issue (‘business’ some would say) of ‘holocaust’ has become taboo, because at its root is anti-Semitism realized. The real question becomes, do ‘holocaust deniers’ have some knowledge or lack of agenda which, say, William Shirer (”Rise and Fall of the Third Reich”) chose not to ‘bring to the public eye’? In short, is there validity in ‘holocaust denial’? I think there may be a growing skepticism of the ‘established’ facts world-wide. This, if true, naturally forces Israel to ‘remind’ everybody about ‘how it really was (or ‘wasn’t’ depending…)’. And in this country (as far as I know), there’s no ‘laws’ which forbid anti-Semitism like some nations in Europe (and I believe Canada as well…). So by re-enforcing ‘holocaust’ as fact, it supersedes any reason to re-evaluate the ‘known’ status-quo.
Anyway:
Excerpt from WaPo:
“To support his case, Fitzgerald disclosed that at some time after Robert D. Novak’s July 14, 2003, column identified Plame as a CIA “operative,” Libby was part of a conversation with a CIA official and one other Cheney employee who is not identified in court papers. The CIA official discussed “the dangers posed by disclosure of the CIA affiliation of one of its employees,” according to a May 12 court filing by the government.”
This seems to be a rather ‘oddly’ worded bit of ’support’?
Sincerely,
Welch Williams
Great. More inflammatory rumours to whip the population into a war frenzy. Cheney strikes again with the WMD stories. This time I hope he strikes out.
I’m sure Iran sucks for minorities, but if BushCo really wanted to stop genocide, they would be more concerned with what’s happening on another continent.
May the traditional press be flooded with reality checks & another Joe Wilson like op-ed piece or two or three or twenty.
Michele Alkin? Come on.
Hmm. Anybody up to looking for a contract issued by any government agency to Benador or any employee or prinicpal of the same?
Or do we FOIA this?
I suppose this is the real point of DoD contracts to companies like Rendon, Lincoln Group, SyColeman…the work gets outsourced and “laundered” so that we can’t see direct contracts to propagandists.
Next question: to date, all known payola recipients have written for Heritage Fdn/TownHall.com; has Taheri done so? I haven’t looked, will do so when I’ve finished a deadline here.
This looks very much like ‘ Rawanda radio’ in the run up to another October ‘ surprise’ doesn’t it?
Here is a criminal incitement to violence imho where it can be proved that there was a link between the hate speech and any overt violent act.
Something similar happened in Au last year. The leader of the opposition and I called for tougher law enforcement on incitement to violence. Less than two weeks later there was massive incitement to violence and riots in the Sydney beach suburbs.
As an anarchist I generally work to shrink down the power of the state overall however providing that it is shrinking overall some small specific local and targeted increases may be whats required in certain circumstances.
The 1st ammendment does not allow your freedom of speech to shout ‘ FIRE’ in a crowded theatre does it?
Incitement at this level at this time IF ASSOCIATED WITH A SPECIFIC ACT OF VIOLENCE should be grounds for an indictable offence imho tho IANAL of course.
Like to hear from our legalista’s on this…
Then they, whoever they might be, wonder about the reason for the rise of anti-semitism in the world. Who had the most to gain from this kind of propaganda??Just lke the “yellow cake out of Africa documents”.
One must remember that there are independent scum out there, too.
But, in this particular case, seeing as the State Department Spokenitwit chose to comment on this story, and use the chance to call Iran, if the story was true, “despicable,” it is obvious that, yes, this is a US effort.
For example, on the same day, the Spokesweasel commented that he had never, ever, in a million gazillion years, heard anyone talk about China joining the G-8, and so he had no comment.
…but Im thinking Republican neocons in cahoots with Likud.
But, Taylor, you repeat yourself!
The founding co-chairman of the Wiesenthal Center is Roland Arnall. He (with his wife and their companies) are among Bush’s largest political donors. He is the founder of Ameriquest, which in the process of being investigated and litigated for predatory lending practices in 30 states.
The Wiesenthal Center, or at least a substantial part of it, is a right-wing organization.
Look at the website. They have not corrected or retracted the smear in which they’ve played a major role, nor will they. There is a difference between holocaust remembrance and the holocaust industry, and the Center crossed it a long time ago.
Hello, I often read this site but have never posted. It’s a great site. Your post on this black psyops story on Iran is great. I just wanted to interject something here. You and some of the other posters seem to think the Simon Wiesenthal Center has some sort of credibility, at least when it comes to the Arab or Muslim world. Those of us who’ve worked on the Palestine issue for years know this is not true. The Wiesenthal Center represents some of the most rigidly islamophobic likud-ist type attitudes. Their credibility is at best seriously compromised on anything having to do with Muslims.
Way dead thread…..
But just thought you all might like to know that there are more than a few Canustanis who are not happy with the fact that we have become the latest branchplant in operation obfuscation for all nations known as ‘Whirlitzer North’.

Welch Williams (136) –
You’re just confusing yourself. The holocaust really happened. The badge law in Iran didn’t. As for Israel, you ever hear the story about the spinmeisters who cried “wolf”?
