In just over 2 weeks there will be a virtual superbowl of state primaries. June 6 will see Democrats picking candidates to fight for our values and our ideals in 8 states: Alabama, California, Iowa, Mississippi, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico, South Dakota. Some of the races are forgone conclusions and a little sleepy– although the only nose-picking I’m aware of is Paul Begala’s– and some of the races are absolutely crucial. I want to cover some of the crucial ones today, all of which can still be impacted by volunteers and contributors.
What makes a Democratic primary crucial for me is when it pits a grassroots, independent-minded progressive against a company man. A company man? Yeah, someone who represents the Inside-the-Beltway careerists who think they own the Democratic Party, the Rahm Emanuels and Steny Hoyers and Chuck Schumers of the world. Look, the Republicans are the enemies of all that makes our country great and they will be dealt with by the voters in November (and by the justice system as time goes on), but there is a culture in Washington shared by career pols on both sides of the aisle and that culture is rigged against workers and consumers. Too many– way too many– Democrats have bought into that culture and the rich rewards kowtowing to the Big Business agenda brings. Primaries are crucial because it is the only time we can reclaim the party that is supposed to represent working men and women from the corporate-whores who make their careers inside the Beltway.
Ironically, the most important race on June 6 is only coincidental with a primary and it is one that does NOT pit the grassroots and progressives against a DCCC corporate shill. The northern San Diego County (CA-50) special election run-off to replace disgraced, imprisoned Republican Randy "Duke" Cunningham, has united all factions of the Democratic Party– from Howard Dean’s Democratic wing to Rahm Emanuel’s Don’t-be-afraid-of-us-We’re-just-like-the-Republicans wing, from liberals to moderates to reactionaries. All Democrats are firmly united behind good government/reform candidate Francine Busby in her valiant bid to stop the GOP from inserting a corporate lobbyist with highly dubious ethics into the seat of the first Republican– probably the first of many– to be jailed for taking bribes and kickbacks from Republican contractors who were given hundreds of millions of dollars worth of sweetheart deals in return.
Brian Bilbray, the Republican, is a mess and a disgrace. A defeated ex-congressman from a neighboring district, he immediately moved to Virginia and hung out a shingle as a lobbyist, using his contacts in the body his constituents had just kicked him out of, to enrich himself. As expected, the Republicans are running a typically gutter-level campaign to cling onto the seat, complete with absurd and degenerate tv ads attempting to portray Francine, a dedicated and committed lifelong educator as someone who sympathizes with child pornography. The NRCC has spent over $2.5 million on the campaign, approximately 1/10 of their total cash on hand. And yet, every week, polling in this very red district (Cunningham won with 58% in 2004 and 64% in 2002 and Bush won with 55% in 2004 and 54% in 2000), shows Bilbray losing more and more support– and Francine pulling ahead. The latest poll, from Lake Research shows her at 47% and Bilbray at 40% with Francine garnering a 53% favorable rating and Bilbray with a 48% favorable rating. Momentum is clearly on Francine’s side. But with the national GOP pouring money into the district Francine needs volunteers and donations. Help if you can. A win here, in the heart of Wingnutia, would be a great way to help build momentum going into the November midterms. In fact, the first 50 people who donate today (any amount) through the ACT BLUE Page, will get a free CD mailed to them courtesy of FDL and DWT.
The most important primary on June 6 is in northern California when Democrats have to decide who to pick to take on one of the dozen worst Republicans in Congress, Richard Pombo, the man who would like nothing better than to sell the national parks in order to give bigger tax cuts to the wealthy business interests who have underwritten his political (and financial) rise. The primary in a classic case pitting an independent-minded grassroots progressive against an Inside-the-Beltway shill who Rahm Emanuel and his clique are attempting to impose on the district.
Jerry McNerney is wearing the white hat here and Steve Filson is the Establishment puppet. In 2004, in response to the urging of his son Michael, who had enlisted in the Air Force after 9/11, Jerry entered the race for Congress as a write-in candidate because the Democratic Party had written-off the district as too difficult to bother wasting money on. Out of NOWHERE, Jerry received nearly 104,000 votes in the general election, the most votes ever received by a challenger to the execrable Pombo.
So along comes 2006 and what does the DCCC do? Do they get behind Jerry McNerney and his huge base of support in CA-11 to help him beat Pombo? No way– Jerry opposes the occupation of Iraq; Jerry is a progressive; Jerry is a populist; Jerry is independent-minded and has no intentions of serving any political bosses from either side of the aisle, not someone named Tom and not someone named… just pick any Dick or Harry out of a hat… like Rahm or Steny. So instead of capitalizing on the groundwork that has been laid and helping Democrats in the San Joaquin Valley rid themselves– and the nation– of one of the most corrupt and corrosive influences on issue after issue that has come before Congress, the DC Insiders recruited and anointed an ex-Republican, pro-Business uninvolved mediocrity who they know will be a good little pawn if they can get him the job.
Fortunately, California Democrats don’t cotton to this kind of stalinist bossism and the state Democratic party convention endorsed Jerry with 75% of the vote. Jerry has also been endorsed by the California Labor Federation (the umbrella group for labor in the state, and includes both AFL-CIO and Change to Win unions), by SEIU (The California State Council of the Service Employees International Union) and by a dozen other unions, as well as by virtually all the district’s Democratic clubs. His opponent, on the other hand, has been endorsed by a cabal of Inside-the-Beltway power brokers, the bottom feeders of the Democratic Party who Emanuel was able to whip into following his lead.
This is ground zero for the battle for the soul of the Democratic Party. Visit Jerry’s website, think about how important it is to stop the bosses so that we don’t let the People’s party be turned into just another subsidiary of Corporate America. And you know what? The same offer I made above about a free CD for the first 50 people who contribute to Francine goes for Jerry too. And then we take on Pombo… and make America a better place to live.
I don’t want to slight any of the important races in any of these states that go to the polls on the 6th. Maybe I better take the rest up next week, especially the Montana Senate primary where Democrats get to pick the man who will crush Jack Abramoff’s closest bud in the U.S. Senate, Conrad Burns. But in California there are a few other important contested primary races for Congress, particularly in picking a Democrat to oppose one of the GOP kings of the Culture of Corruption, John Doolittle, where Charlie Brown looks like the best bet. And in the suburbs of L.A., there is the race to oust the homophobic closet queen David Dreier, the man to whom Denny Hastert turned when he needed someone to draft ethics legislation that would allow the Republican Culture of Corruption continue unabated. Moderate Democrat Russ Warner is probably the best Democrat to be able to retire Dreier and turn the district blue. There’s also a lively primary to pick a challenger to take on scandal-ridden Duncan Hunter down in CA-52; all the Democrats look pretty decent so I’m just waiting to see what the voters come up with here.

Who are DiFi’s primary challengers? She is another repub enabler that needs to be retired!
OT (heads up if it hasn’t been reported yet):
Libby lawyers oppose Cheney notes as evidence
Defense attorneys argue vice president’s ex-aide hadn’t seen document

Dr. Trex calling Dr. Trex your presence with a hacksaw and a scalpel is urgently required in cubicle 152 (professor rat) of the last thread.
CA-06 Wooley is being attacked by her home town paper dailykos
they already endorsed her corporate owned primary challenger.
the insiders also spit on owners of small businesses, who don’t benefit from tax cuts for the rich & who don’t benefit from campaigns aimed at union members
also, it’s small businesses who suffer when we restrict immigration
how many jobs can we say that unions have created? how many jobs do big corporations create as they downsize & outsource? — bugger all, that’s how many
small businesses are fertile ground for creating jobs because that’s where entrepreneurs start — america is losing out in the arena of global competitiveness owing to its mistreatment of entrepreneurs — america has become a country where it’s much harder than elsewhere to work one’s way up the economic ladder — look at our politicians: the bushes, the kennedys: they represent the mediocrity of america’s elite
Thanks, Howie, you do amazing work on this front. I really appreciate the info. Ned Lamont’s success yesterday was very inspirational, let’s hope it spreads.
FYI to Patrick J. Fitzgerald on tags, if you have a beginning tag, then you need to end it.
Just think of it as shutting the gate on the way out. Need to keep all the things inside the tags so they do not leak out.
Running against Di Fi
Colleen Fernald (mother,Arts,Entreprenuer)
Martin Luther Church (Retired Program Manager)
I’ll go out on a limb here and say that neither Fernald or Church has a snowball’s chance in hell.
DiFi is a moderately conservative democrat. Her positions are often different from mine- still she’s a million miles away from a gooper.
Hope we don’t get so parochial that we cut off our noses to spite our faces.
Talk is much better than cheap at FDL, but remember to put your money where your mouth is.
If we want them to be very afraid we must support our people with M-O-N-E-Y.
That’s just the way it is. SO DO IT!
Diane Feinstein is not as ugly as Joe Lieberman, but her politics are. She has two opponents for the democratic senate nomination:
1) Martin Luther Church – Retired Program Manager
2) Colleen Fernald – Mother/Artist/Etnrepreneur
Does anyone know anything about either? Help me choose the best protest vote!
ab initio:
DiFi’s not up to bat this time, IIRC.
Arizona has two fighting Dems runing:
Jeff Latas – http://www.jefflatas.com/
AND
Herb Pain – http://paineforcongress.org/
Both are endorsed by PDA & DFA
Yep- DiFi’s running.
Boxer gets to sit this one out.
Latas is running for AZ CD-08 & Herb for CD-03
rcole: I don’t understand the resistance to voting against DiFi in the primary. Of course I’ll vote that the spineless traitor in November, but I’ll be damned if I’m gonna vote for her on June 6. Where’s the outrage? If Lieberman is Bush’s lapdog, DiFi is Lieberman’s. She’s worse, actually. She doesn’t just screw over the vertebrate democrats, she PREEMPTIVELY screws them over on the Sunday talk shows before they can even get off the ground.
I’d much rather have two Barbara Boxers represent me in the Senate, but if there has to be a California Republican Senator, I’d much rather she voted to organize with the Democrats, as Dianne Feinstein does.
Incidental to your mention of John Doolittle, Howie: Darth Cheney arrives at SFO tonight, per last night’s late local news, and his big Doolittle fundraiser isn’t until Monday. With no public events scheduled, I wonder what BigTime’s up to? Also, the Cheney fundraiser has brought in $250k for Doolittle already, of which 15% goes directly into Mrs. Doolittle’s purse, since she’s the “organizer” of the event.

For the record, I despise Lieberman. Lamont is the only politician I have ever sent money to directly outside my state.
What would happen if Lieberman ran as an Indy? Would he not siphon off enough dem votes to allow the Repub to slip in? It is not as if we can count on every single dem to vote for Lamont should he be the candidate, tho that would be wonderful. Lieberman must still have some support. Is this point not the very reason why we are suspicious and upset that he has not said he would not run as an indy?
added: or as a Repub, for that matter.
Obsessed–Guess there is no reason not to vote against her- it’s a futile gesture- but anyone can do it who wants to. Of course after the election it’s better to be able to say “I supported you in the last election” when you are reading her the riot act- which I do frequently.
Maybe Dicky found a place in the bay area to murder ducks.
still she’s a million miles away from a gooper.
The only differences between DiFi and the goopers are that she’s pro-choice and she’s so rich that she probably isn’t taking bribes.
Atrios’ “hideous human being” description of Lieberman applies equally to DiFi.
sorry in advance if this is old news, via “ross tory”:
Former Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage has emerged as a key witness in the CIA leak probe, the NEW YORK DAILY NEWS’ Ken Bazinet and James Meek report…
…
Special Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald recently had to sneak Armitage into a Washington courthouse to get past reporters – a sign of his value in the case, according to one source.
I. Scooter Libby is a BIG FAT LIAR
Oh, I’m SURE he had NO IDEA that Cheney wanted to wipe Wilson off the map. None whatsoever. After all, he’s such a stand-up guy who would never attack a political opponent. GMAFB!!
DiFi’s going to win but it doesn’t hurt for committed progressives to let her know– at the ballot box– that her reactionary politics costs her votes. I was friends with Harvey Milk when he and DiFi were on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. He never liked her at all and always told me how conservative her instincts were. After Harvey and Mayor Moscone were assasinated by a right-wing Republican pyscho who was also on the Board of Supervisors, DiFi ran for mayor. I supported Jello Biafra (who did pretty well). She became mayor and has been a big drag ever since. I’ve never cast a vote for her.

I’m a little late to party here, but, a few threads ago you led with a reference to a sho’ nuff hot-shit git-tar picker by the name of Duane Allman. Good on ya’! It’s a deep well, aint it?
Lurkus revertus…
Question (inspired by a comment on Hairball yesterday): so if whenever BushCo and the Repukes are in political hot water they have to “return to their base” and “appease their base” and cater to their base, how come the same thing doesn’t happen on the left?? All I ever see are the Dems running running running to the center, just assuming that their base will vote for them anyway.
Born of frustration over primaries like Holy Joe, DiFi, and Cantwell here in WA state. Why does everyone tell us we have to settle for these people?
Darth Cheney loose in the Bay Area … Giants at Oakland … somebody tell Barry Bonds to wear his flak vest!
Howie Klein:
I read your post with interest. But. Can anyone explain, clearly, what it is that front runner Hillary Clinton brings to the Democratic Party, and more importantly, to the country, in her bid for the nomination for president in ‘08? At this point, I really don’t see much of choice between the Repubs and the Senator from New York. Seems to me that what we have on the national stage is “stalinist bossism” coming from the the DLC and, by implication, from Clinton and her ‘third-way’ corporate fat-cat cronies. Of course, if all one is interested in is defeating the Republicans in 2008 and not what a Clinton presidency portends, (what with the Senator’s support for the immoral Bush war and non-support for women’s issues and all), then no problem. I guess. I just want more. Indeed demand more from my Democratic Party! Am I missing something?
Can you bring us up to speed on how these people have gotten to where they are? For instance Gore is an insider by family, Kerry is Skull and Bones like Bush, Edwards is self made via law, Obama is self made son of immigegranst (via business?), Powell is self made from the city via military.
I think you mentioned Ned Lamont is a multi-millionaire… is he self made or family money?
I refuse to vote for another dynasty, general, or business interest. I will vote only for self made people unless all else is equal (like the suck election of ‘08 where it was one skull and bones (sex grog drunk -v- alto fancy boy). That means no hillary, no jeb, no gore, no clark.
Who is the dem base? Labor and African Americans. You don’t find dems alienating either.
I could never figure out why Steve McQueen keeps pining for that skinny Tuesday Weld when he’s got Ann-Margaret in a pink slip in the bathroom.
Cheney – simply a matter of scheduled reanimation at an undisclosed Palo ALto AI site
gleex, well said. I’ve been reading KPhillips’ book about the Bush “dynasty” and would have to agree, we’ve had enough of dynasties, on both sides of the aisle. We need to move toward meritocracy. I’m sick of people who get where they are only on the strength of their family and connections, not on their strength of character and intellect.
Howie: Which of the 2 DiFi opponents are you voting for?
Can anyone explain … what it is that front runner Hillary Clinton brings to the Democratic Party?
Nostalgia for the Clinton good times? Bill’s only chance for a do over? First Woman President?
Mostly, I thing she appeals to those who don’t pay close attention — except for the Investment Class, who like her just fine. To the big money set, she’s GOP Lite, without the incompetence.
For passionate Democrats — not much . . .
good column from CT about Nedrenaline! http://blogs.courant.com/colin…..me_st.html
it jibes with my observation about the fundamental weakness shown by Holy Joey at the Democratic Party Convention…
Dems are asking the question:
“who can we bring into the party who doesn’t vote for us now to form a majority coalition?”
Goopers are asking “Who do we have to worry about bolting from our already slender majority coalition?”
The dynamics are slightly different for the two parties at this time- but that could shift in a millisecond,.
via Atrios, here’s Colin McEnroe of the Hartford Courant reporting on the Connecticut Democratic convention:

Probably don’t have a chance here in Freeper Central but…..
Francine Busby!!!!
Snip from WaPo:
“Among House incumbents added to some GOP watch lists in recent months are veteran Reps. Nancy L. Johnson (Conn.), Deborah Pryce (Ohio), Charles Bass (N.H.), J.D. Hayworth (Ariz.) and Richard W. Pombo (Calif.).”
http://tinyurl.com/lryc9
Great post, thanks.
One more piece of the Pombo puzzle: Old-timer Pete McCloskey, the well-respected but long-retired GOP Congressman from the South Bay (early opponent of the Vietnam War, good environmental credentials, IIRC) moved east to Pombo’s district for the express reason of taking him on in the primary. He’s from that defunct school of moderate Repubs, and would be a huge improvement over Mr. Lead-head.
Not to diminish the importance of Jerry McNerney’s Dem bid….
Just sent my very small donation to Francine Busby via ActBlue .
This race is near and dear to my heart: Rush-loving sister Dru and fundie husband live there, and I have high hopes that they will some day wake up and “see the light”.
This is Duke Cunningham’s district. If you are as excited as I am about building upon last night’s Nedmentum, why not take three minutes, go to ActBlue and contribute, too.
Busby’s got a chance. It all depends on turnout. Ballots are already out and coming back in. Will goopers out “show up” this time as usual? We’ll see. Total turnout will not exceed 30% of registered voters- so every vote is BIG.
I am a grassroots volunteer for Jerry McNerney and I think that it is great that his campaign is now getting mentioned at this level of attention with Busby’s. These are two critical races, not just for the House, but for the heart of the Democratic party. Thank you all in advance for any donations you can send Jerry’s way.
Mr. Klein,
Many thanks for this article. These neocon enablers are a big reason this country is in a Constitutional crisis. Shrubya would never be Prez without them. Rahm, Begala, Carville, etc. are still using Clinton’s wins to defend their ridiculous beliefs, while totally ignoring that Clinton was just a much better candidate than H.W. and Dole.
These people need to go away! Let some real leaders lead (Feingold, Boxer, Conyers), and get some cushy consultant jobs or something. You’ll be fine…we’ll take it from here…
BTW, who are you people saying “Gore/Feingold, Gore/whoever”?!?!? Yes, I know he won the popular vote, but frankly, it shouldn’t have been close! How do you “lose” to that buffoon? It’s not like Gore had just started his political career, and now with some reflection, he’s learned some lessons. Two words for you Gore for Prez peeps: 1.) Tipper 2.) Lieberman. ’nuff said…
Oh yea, and what does DiFi’s husband do for his “job”? We really need to say Bye-Bye to DiFi also. Best wishes to Busby, McNerney, Lamont, and all true liberals campaigning across the country. The tide is turning! Thanks to the FDL community for all your efforts.
markfromireland I’m not sure why a hacksaw and scalpel are needed to deal with civil disobedience advocacy but maybe instead of ordering others about maybe you can explain it to my face – pro2rat@yahoo.etc
The only one here needs a hacksaw and scalpel I can see are anyone goes drinki…shooting with Cheney.
Smells like military-industrial complex to me:

Mr. Klein: thank you for this very interesting analysis. Personally, I’m more interested in the overall picture as you present it, instead of massive focus on any one particular campaign.
I encourage you to write much more on these various races across the country! Good good job!
I’ve been looking closely at the Marcinkowski (sp?) race up in Michigan. I encourage you to bring the reader more analysis on all the various races of importance. Thanks again.

ANGER
I think this is the key to the next two elections – and the problem with all the democrats except Murtha & occasionally Pelosi.
People are mad as hell — for different and often conflicting reasons — but the country is furious. I could be wrong, but I think success will come to the candidate who starts giving speeches with some serious anger in his or her voice.
The anger in Jane’s posts about Lieberman, Howell, Woodward et al really resonates with me, and obviously with many others. Look at the trajectory of the number of visits to this site. People are really — seriously — pissed off — and need websites like this one and candidates like _______ to express that anger.
The democrats truly don’t get this.
OT / IT – is anybody else experiencing a problem with refreshing the comment thread? Mine get stuck at the previous comment that I posted. I’ve cleared the cache to no avail.

I was in the hospital on our primary day. Was told later that someone from the Board of Elections would have come up to the hospital with a ballot. Remember that if you get sick!
Tech tip for people having trouble. Go and delete your cache and cookies. Then try and load the page.
I think the incumbent re-election rate is in the mid-90%. Each party is responsible for ensuring their candidates will remain in office. That fact may explain why so few people particate by voting. It can be said that it really doesn’t matter. I live in CA-50 and quite frankly got put to sleep by this campaign. The Democratic Party is lost. Not that it ever has been a force for change.
I got plain furious yesterday when I received an email from Howard Dean requesting a signiture for a petition to stop Hayden. Yet the club in Congress is fawning over the guy and we can expect prominent Democrats to vote for his confirmation.
Hayden is part of the cabal that is undermining our democracy. He is for spying on Americans and has done it. We can expect he recognizing the need to get “tough” with detainees (what the rest of the world calls torture) and most likely agrees with a continual “war on terror” to keep fear alive and liberties surpressed.
Further, I just filled up my tank for $60.00 and that money is going to make the oil companies richer so they can fund more candidates in BOTH parties while we make no progress on alternative energies that might save us from extinction. There is hardly a murmmer from the public.
I really don’t see a way out of this. Strong leadership might do it. But then it costs millions just for a House seat. That money comes from the entrenched interest.
Among all the so-called liberal blogs that I spend way too much time reading, I almost never see a mention of a 400 billion dollar defense budget. I view that as immoral. I rarely see a mention of public financing of elections to eliminate monied interests controlling our public policy. Last I looked national health insurance was decades away.
I wish Busby and rest well, but come on, we can’t even agree on what we want.
ruffian – likewise, all I see is the name of the image file (tuesday.jpg)
Comments seem to refresh only when I make a comment-strange.
gleex @ 11:45 am (#34) – I agree that being from a rich family isn’t the surest path to being a progressive, but you’re also describing the Kennedys, the (Bill) Gates, and the Harrimans, among others. These are people who’ve done a great deal of good with their money and principles.
This gets back to something I wrote in the last thread – it’s the person who matters, not the label. Being “Christian” or “rich” doesn’t matter nearly as much as “honest” or “compassionate”. Sure, Ted Kennedy hasn’t the faintest idea what it’s like to have to worry about where your next meal is going to come from, but his actions tell me he doesn’t want anyone else to have to worry about that, either.
Yuk. Tim Wussert has a new book out, apparently to tell us all how he learned his values. (Like 3 (R’) only, I guess, on tomorrow’s MTP).
He’s being lionised on Book TV C-Span. I had to switch off. Its all blarney y’know.
I will be voting against DiFi in the primary as a protest vote, although I am not sure which candidate to support. Since she will win the primary, I will still be able to claim that I voted for her in the last election if I need to. (Although I don’t think I have ever said that when calling her office.)
Slightly OT – Any opinions on Westly vs. Angelides in the CA Governor Democratic primary?
punaise @ 12:19 pm (#56) – I think obsessed is right. Clearing the cache only clears the cache on disk. If the page is still held in memory it may not be cleared out until you exit. I’ve had that problem occasionally with Firefox in the past.
sunny – same thing (#56). clearing cache and cookies does fix that, but that’s not a sustainable solution, as the problem re-emerges immediately. especially clearing cookies, which wipes out log-in name, etc.
punaise #70-I cleared cache and cookies this morning; but now comments do seem to be appearing in a timely fashion.
DiFi is an institution – she ain’t going nowhere. A protest vote in the primary is worthwhile.
Pacifica,
I, too, am dying to hear more about Westly vs. Angelides. All I know, thus far, is that Westly has been endorsed by a California gay group (Equality Calif?) and Angelides has been endorse by both Senators and many of “the good guys” (nurses, teachers, police, fire).
Cujo359 (69) – even closing and re-opening Firefox doesn’t help. Somewhere on a thread in the last few days someone mentioned that a super-frequently-frequented site (guilty as charged!) could be buried so deep in the cache that it doesn’t get cleared via normal means. Alas, I didn’t note the remedy for that.
RE: #34: Clark started out at West Point and worked his way up. Did not come from money. Not sure why you think he is not “self-made”.
Hello from the State Convention in Hartford! I’m borrowing CT Blogger’s Mac (yecch!) to post this.
We’re currently mired in endless challenges to the governor’s race. NH Mayor John DeStefano and Stamford Mayor Dan Malloy tallied almost equal numbers, and at least five town delegations are challenging the results and recasting their votes. This is Connecticut politics at it’s most dramatic!
I expect the challenges to take another 30-60 minutes to get cleared up, or maybe the vote will be nullified because of technicalities. The may end up in court, who knows? There’s a motorcycle show loading into the Expo Center as I type this, and we’re supposed to be out of here by 5PM. I don’t see how that’s possible.
Dan Malloy is working the crowd like a real pro, while DeStefano is a bit lower key. The crowd is becoming sweaty and smelly and I can’t wait for this goddamned thing to end! Fear and politics create the worst cologne…
More sometime later, when CT Blogger isn’t tying up his computer. Pics posted at http://connecticutblog.blogspot.com
Later!
Oklahoma Kiddo (#33), in my opinion you’ve summed it up perfectly and you don’t seem to be missing a thing. And as for “what does Hillary got?” Lots and lots and lots of money and lots of name recognition with people who get their news from the boob tube and the National Enquirer and not from FDL. I’m praying Gore or Feingold– or, better yet, Gore AND Feingold– can stop her. Can you imagine what kind of dreck she’ll dig up to run for VP? The worst I can imagine is Evan Bayh, who is even more Republican than Liebermonster. But another complete and utter catastrophe that she and her triangulators would probably love– and I know this is gonna start a shit storm– would be General Clark.
Clark would probably be a good pick for Hillary- if it gets that far. I suspect it won’t.
Howie (77),
No shit storm about Gen. Clark as long as you can explain how/why you think he’d be a catastrophe. (I don’t know enough about him.)
What would be a refreshing change would be a candidate who says:
“We’ve got many things in this country that need to be fixed- but here are the big three- and here are action plans to fix em with estimated budgets. impacts. and best and worse case outcomes. I got this stuff by sitting down for many weeks with the best minds available one each subject. The people I talked to have endorsed the work. That’s my plan and I will be responsible for it”.
Great stuff, Howie, as always. Thanks!
Way to go Mark @ #63! I agree with everything you said. It does get pretty frustrating–and unfortunately the more you work for change and nothing happens, the more jaded you get.
I threw my all into the ‘04 election and now am extremely gun-shy…esp. since the Dems cannot seem to find a backbone to save their lives. Jon Stewart said it best to Howard Dean: “So how are you guys going to screw it up this time?”
Punaise (#46), McCloskey is a decent guy and I’ve been impressed with his campaign. He has no shot whatsoever to win a Republican primary. On the other hand, is is softening up Pombo very nicely for McNerney and I feel confident that after June 6, McCloskey will do the right thing for CA-11, for California, for America– and for God’s natural world– and endorse Jerry. Meanwhile, moderate Republicans and Independents are hearing from one of their own exactly why Richard Pombo is the worst congressman in the state and one of the half dozen worst in the nation. (Being the worst congressman in California is an incredible achievement when you think about what John Doolittle is or Jerry Lewis. And don’t forget Duncan Hunter.)
Angelides is definitely in with the power elite, including the oil companies. He’s going to increase taxes all round apparently to get us out of the hole we’re in.
Personally, I like Westly very much. He says we don’t need to increase taxes, that the books can be balanced without. He’s smart, young and ambitious. He also has much more advertising out on tv – I can’tremember when I last saw an Angelides ad, but have seen four ofWestlys so far today and he’s doing CNN a lot. He’s been very successful in business and I understand from friends in the Bay Area that he’s loved by the tech crowd.
Anyone but Arnold!
Not sure why Howie is against Clark unless he is kneejerk anti-military, but if you’re looking for “strength of character and intellect,” as Airport Cat said in #38, you will not do better than the General, and I know whereof I speak.
rwcole -12. I really don’t care about DiFi’s idealogy what I care about are her votes/talking points on issues that matter to me – constitutional rights of individuals, invading countries pre-emptively, enabling Repub talking points.
On issues ranging from Iraq, to warantless wiretapping and spying on Americans to torture and secret renditions, she has enabled Repub talking points. The most recent being stating that Hayden would be a great DCIA when the guy ran the illegal spying operation and argued that the 4th amendment did not require probable cause.
I realize that she will be re-elected and get another 6 years but I would rather have another Boxer!
I’ll register my rather meaningless opposition by voting for her opponent in the primary.
Jacqrat (#47), Thanks for the contribution. I am absolutely FLOORED by the generous and overwhelming response from the FDL community on the Busby and McNerney ACT BLUE page at DownWithTyranny today. I think it’s going to be the best day ever, not counting when I offered to match all Ned Lamont contributions for 24 hours. As you know, today the first 50 people who give to Francine and the first 50 people who give to Jerry, get a free CD (a good one) mailed to them. A couple days ago SpongeBob Squarepants contributed to both campaigns on the ACT BLUE page– even without the CD offer!
thanks howie,
my copies of “how would a patriot act” have just arrived
the post that refreshes
Bonkers (#50), you sound real smart. All I can answer you with is that (in terms of Tipper) he was young and foolish and in love. I’ve moved on (reluctantly) at how bad a choice he made for a mate. The Lieberman pick was MUCH worse. But Gore has changed and grown. Lieberman nearly had a heart attack when Gore not only refused to endorse him but actually endorsed Howard Dean. Al Gore has grown and matured. My gut tells me he would make a truly great president, not just a good one or a mediocre on (like Hillary) but a GREAT one. We need a great one to balance what we’re going through now.
Turnout will be the name of the game this fall. Many states do not have a statewide race on the ballot, which traditionally depresses turnout. If the fundies show up and we don’t, 2006 will not be pretty.
Lamont in a portent of things to come, if we do out part.
It’s way to pretty here in NC today to contemplate the alternative.
Wesley Clark was raised by his single parent Mother until he was 11 years old when she married again. His stepfather was not that good a provider and his mother continued working and was the family’s main support.
Wes is definitely a self-made man. He’s also new blood for the Democrat Party who are mortally afraid of new blood.
I know nothing about Mr. Klein, although have read negative things elsewhere, but that can happen to anyone. I am wondering though.
Howie Klein (82)
…McCloskey…is is softening up Pombo very nicely for McNerney and I feel confident that after June 6, McCloskey will do the right thing …and endorse Jerry.
thanks for the perspective . I could see McCloskey doing that.
TUESDAY WELD FOR PRESIDENT !!!
Pacifica (#68) and Mike V (#73), I plan to do a story at DWT this week about the CA governor’s race. People forget how really bad Schwarzenegger is. He has a great spin machine and is adept at distancing himself– around election time– from Bush and the extremists like Pombo and Lewis. But he’s just as bad as they are. As for Angelides and Westly, I’m not as knowledgeable as I should be. I was very impressed by how powerfully Angelides took on Schwarzenegger in the special initiative election. That was the first I had ever seen him in action. As for Westly, I only met the man once and he made me sick to my stomach– a weak and pathetic pandering creep, what my old friend Beverly might call “a puke.”
punaise @ 12:52 pm (#74) – Don’t know what to suggest, other than removing the cache directory. Unfortunately, I don’t do Windows, so I’m not sure what the cache directory’s name would be. The process would be:
* Exit Firefox
* Remove cache directory
* Start Firefox
The directory will be rebuilt. The problem would come in if you removed the wrong directory. At the very least, you’d lose your setup.
I have some Deaniac friends working on the Lamont campaign. I signed up too, even though I am in Arizona.
“Too many– way too many– Democrats have bought into that culture and the rich rewards kowtowing to the Big Business agenda brings. Primaries are crucial because it is the only time we can reclaim the party that is supposed to represent working men and women from the corporate-whores who make their careers inside the Beltway.”
Thank you! My sentiments exactly. I am very pro-business, but I am pro-small business, not pro-corporate welfare. The businesses that sustain the economy and communities are small. Arizona is made up of 98% small businesses, yet the big corporations get all the welfare. We have a key congressional race in southern Arizona going on now. We have a DLC Democrat, Gabrielle Giffords, outraising everyone since she is the DLC darling. Yet, in 3 polls, including her own internal poll, she can’t get past 26% against either of the top 2 Republicans. You wouldn’t believe how many people have sold out to support her, including my own congressman who I always respected. They always put their own politics and networking over supporting the best the representative for the people and I am so sick of it.
We have a chance to get this seat back, but you would think that the party would get behind the more progressive Democrat, Patty Weiss, who also happens to be polling in the 53-56% against both Republicans! No, they want the candidate who sells out to the corporations in her vote, who sponsored an Internet user tax so taxpayers would pay the taxes instead of corporations, and who is proudly running her campaign as a ‘centrist’. She refused to run on Clean Elections as my state Rep and Senator which tells you something right there. She comes from a rich family and her Dad made her CEO of his company after 4 months. That is her claim to fame of her extensive business experience. It is such bullshit. She wants more military buildup (try to appease our Raytheon and air force base voters). Of course she supported the war. Now, she is changing her tune to appeal to the more liberal Democrats who make up the primary, only to win it, and turn on them in the General. You know the story.
She has the money, her infiltrators in the other campaigns, and the machinery with some big names behind her. She has all the corporate and many big unions $$$. However, she is still polling in the toilet and her top competitor (the one I decided to support this week) raised a respectable $183,000 her first 2 months and has over 800 grassroots supports (more than the other candidates combined). Weiss is polling great among independents, which make up about a third of electorate and she is even polling well with Republicans because they like her integrity. I was a Dean supporter so I look for both intelligent and people-focused policies.
I know if Weiss can win the primary she is our best shot at winning the general, but the primary is an uphill climb for her. She doesn’t have the 5 years of political connections the lifelong- Republican-turned-Democrat-to-run, Giffords, does. And she got in the race late, the end of January. So, all of us volunteers will have our work cut out for us but be damned if I will support another corporate whore. I wish more people saw that connection between corporate influence and the destruction of our country.
I just bought Hostile Takeover by David Sirota and am loving it.
Joshua Franks has been almost alone in pushing the story:
DiFi: War Profiteer
He added a touch more to the story last month with:
FWIW, even though Angelides looks better than Westley, he’s still just another inside plaer like Davis who has paid his partisan dues & is ready to cash in.
Enjoy your posts, Howie — from yr jazz freak SF ex-neighbor on 16th St
jinny (#83)
I am getting so many commercials from both Westly and Angelides that I can’t imagine that the winner will have enough money left to run against Arnold. I am leaning towards Westly but just don’t know that much about him. The debate did not help much, just made me sick.
It will take a charismatic leader to beat Arnold. I think Westly is a “sexier” candidate than Angelides. Being a co-founder of Ebay also makes Westly “cool”.
Angelides has been around a long time and seems to fade into the background. Kind of like Gray Davis.
Arnie’s doin a pretty good job of moving toward the left. He fired his wingnut advisors and has taken a different path. His approval ratings show that he’s making progress. Who’s the real Arnie? Who the hell knows. Bottom line, I think, is that any dem who runs a halfway decent campaign should beat him. Too early to say if there’s a dem in the race capable of doing that.
Westly could throw in his own money if that is allowed by campaign finance rules.
Ahhnold is a sham! But he has loads of money and a Rovian campaign team. I don’t think the opposition is as united and aggressive as they were during the special election. Hopefully there will be a blue tidal wave in CA that will sweep him out.
Howie Klein (#95)
I will look forward to reading that story! I’ve not seen much progressive analysis of the two candidates to base a decision on.
Oscar (#85), I know the legions of Clark fans have all been taught to call everyone who doesn’t think he would be an appropriate president (or, in my case, vice-president) “knee-jerk anti-military” but I most certainly am not, having come from a family where everyone had been in the military. I was very open-minded about Clark and went to meet with him a few months ago. He seemed like a nice enough guy and his wife would be a much better First Lady than Tipper. However, EVERYTHING he had to say was so limited to a narrow, narrow profession military point of view– regardless of subject– that after a few minutes I was wondering if he was just trying to be a parody. I admire a lot about him and think he has a role to play… but as a president, no way. He’s a lot better than someone like Biden or Bayh but he doesn’t come close to what the country needs in a leader now. As a student of history– and now as a professor– I also know a lot of people are attracted to military strong men as a solution to all life’s problems. They never are, at least not for long.
ck, thanks for pointing out CaseyL #166 comment in previous thread. I’m glad I got to read that.
What america needs in 08 is someone dedicated to:
Fixing health care
Fixing the deficit
Cutting use of fossil fuels by 10-20%
Pulling out of Iraq if we’re still there.
In order to pull this off, the successful president person has to appear to be pragmatic and middle of the road and has to be personally powerful enough to woo congress with carrots and sticks. She or He will have to be a consumate deal maker. It will be a VERY different time- but the congress will almost certainly remain evenly divided politically. We need someone really good to pull this off. I hate to say it- but it would be easier for a gooper to pull it off.
Howie–sorry to bring up the “knee-jerk anti military” but there are a LOT of them in the Democratic party. . . sorry to jump to conclustions! :)
Respectfully disagree about Clark but that discussion can wait I guess! :)
Fixing health care is probably the toughest job on the list. Too many vested interest groups to move to a Canadian type system- which is probably what we need. Will some gooper get sane on the subject? Don’t hold your breath. Will Hillary try to do a reprise of her first political failure? Stay tuned.
rwcole #103: “it would be easier for a gooper to pull it off”
Maybe, but a gooper is never going to even try to accomplish the things you list!

I’ll comment and hopefully unstick them.
Oscar- yep! Still it would be easier for him/her. Deficit fear is endemic to the species- so that one could be easy. Declaring victory in Iraq with much fanfare and pulling out wouldn’t be hard either. The wind is now at the back of energy conservation. The toughie for a gooper is health care. Would never pass muster in the gooper brotherhood.
I’m sorry but CA 50 is not the center of right wing nuttery, I live here. There are some pockets, Escondido, Vista, but most of it is either old money like Rancho Santa Fe, Del Mar, La Jolla, or professional high tech/bio/pharma workers whose kids play soccer while dad and mom train for triathlon.
Get it?
These are not social conservatives, or country club conservaties, they are highly educated sububan professionals used to highly competant, savvy leaders in thier work.
I want Busby to adjust her message to fit these poeple. The “I’m a mom and will cleanup washington.” How bout, I’m an smart and sharp, and will not be tied to lobby money and corruption or something like that.
(garrrrr…..even clearing cache/cookies no longer works)
Would it be too much to ask for some candidate, any candidate, to explain to the American people that what helps the majority of people also helps THEM . . . i.e., it is good for rich people too if everyone has guaranteed health care, a minimum wage, social security etc..
The repubs have been pulling the wool over everyone’s eyes saying that tax cuts for the rich are good for the poor for long enough . . . let’s get the truth out there!!
yep, it worked. What sort of punky web gremlin behaves like this
Reading about Pombo reminds me of our own gerryamndered district here in OR. (Notice the little bubble in the lower left of the district – that’s where I live. For those of you who know Oregon geography, we in the I-5 corridor have about as much in common with the central and eastern ranchlands as Massachusetts and Texas.)
Carol Voisin won our Dem. primary to face off with Rubber Stamper Greg Walden. Here’s her website: http://www.voisinforcongress.com/ I like her link to how Walden has voted. I guess I’m hoping someone here with the experience might be able to assess Voisin’s chances against Walden and what might help fire up the grassroots movement out “there” in the hinterlands. I’m willing to do my part, but am trying to figure out what is needed to make this a competitive race…
Thanks!
Health care is my no. 1 concern as well, having experienced the beauty that is European national health system (maybe has flaws but guess what??? So does ours!!) . . . I don’t think most people realize the benefits of not having to worry about themselves and their family members getting old and sick every single day of their lives. What’s that worth, anyway?
Cujo 359 (96) – thanks, can’t find that directory. If I start messing around with the internals that’s asking for more trouble!
Barry Bonds hit #714 today vs. Oakland
Mr. Klein (#90):
Thanks for being so active in the comments. It’s much appreciated.
Fair, valid points on Gore and living and learning. Although, those are two REALLY big decisions in his life and seems we agree he royally screwed the pooch on both (sorry, no pun intended about Tipper or anything…seriously!) If he’s the choice, I will vote for him on his environmental record alone, but really would love another choice.
Also, Gore is part of the triangulation brigade. How do we know his newly found pulse is not just pandering to the liberal groundswell, thanks to AAR, blogs, etc. It’s time for some triangulation strangulation, my friend. I’m just worried we’re being “played” by Gore. I hope I’m wrong, and you’re right. Thanks again and look forward to reading more from you.
Oscar (#106)– you’re cool!

This flushes your Domain Name Service cache and may enable your browser to find and refresh the page. Probably best to exit your browser first. Pretty sure there’s a similar command for Mac users as well.
graphics are back and boy am I glad…I love FDL
teak111–agree about wishing candidates would focus on the corruption and having some trace of basic intelligence . . . after the train wreck that is the Bush Administration you’d think that maybe people are ready for someone with half a brain for a change.
Also, wouldn’t it be nice to have someone who admits to READING once in awhile . . . at least it shows people that you don’t think you have all the answers, that you recognize there are problems that need solutions, and that you are TRYING to find some.
Rather than going on vacation, sitting on your a$$, and waiting for God to tell you what to do.
teak–
I live here too. It’s pretty wing nut filled in my opinion. Lots of military and defense industry types. Many of the engineers work or worked for the defense industry. Lots of “two jobs, two SUVs, two kids, and a mortgage that would choke a horse” people who are very tax adverse. It’s not filled with snake handlers- but it’s very gooper.
I agree with what you have to say about Busby’s campaign. Not too impressive- but she may win anyway. Too late to change her message probably. Many (like me) have already mailed in their ballot.
I don’t care much for Angelides as he got his start in Sacramento working with developers & seems to have been involved in the deals that enabled the flood prone Natomas basin to be opened to development (whose levees are now deemed vulnerable). He was a big money raiser for Dukakis’ presidential run & earned a lot of ‘creds’ with party regulars then. I don’t get the sense that he’s distanced himself at all for the Burton/Feinstein machine with which he’s been aligned. Westley is running despicable ads denouncing Angelides as a ‘tax-raiser’ — he sounds like a Republican.
From a 2001 article, A brighter shade of Gray on Angelides’ gubernatorial aspirations:
Angelides deserves credit at least for making the energy companies shit bricks with his proposal during the energy crisis for a state power authority & threatening to take over the utilities’ transmission lines.
new thread
Oscar 116, it’s worth a lot to me not to have to worry about health care. I’ve had a chronic condition since age 15, which was decades ago. We are our resources. Not our rocks or minerals–We the People.
Why worry about terrorists bombing us? We’re in peril of some bug or cancer or what have you because we can’t f-ing afford to go to the doc. Or to have an MRI, a cystoscopy, etc. Much less chemo.
Margot–yes, and people need to realize it’s about more than just numbers–it’s about quality of life!
Few people know the joy of having a problem, going to the doctor, and LEAVING. End of story! No endless reams of paperwork, no mailboxes full of bills from every conceivable lab, doctor and emergency room . . . ah!!
Big Pharma Barry Bonds? Better Living Through Chemistry?
Thanks again for another excellent update, Howie. Russ Warner’s staff liked your article about him.
#4 ab initio sez – Who are DiFi’s primary challengers? She is another repub enabler that needs to be retired!
She has no real dem challengers that I know of, but the republican in this race is a stinking pile of ophal named Dick Mountjoy, who used to represent my district in the state senate.
Diane is 100,000 times better than that sack of crap. He has a bumper sticker on his car that says: “Abortion, gays, crack cocaine – liberals, don’t ya just love ‘em?” Wonder what he’d say if he knew that his son, who ran for and won Dick’s assembly seat, was on of the biggest drug dealers in high school? And the crack? Courtesy of our government, thank you very much.
Just came from a parade with Russ Warner. Such a nice man, I hope he doesn’t get too badly slimed in the race against Dreier, who didn’t even bother to show up today. Interesting. This is the first time he has not been here in 10 years.
Our new Dem club had the gaudiest float in the parade – red white and blue bunting, giant American and California flags, signs for all the local dem candidates and the candidates themselves, balloons for every child on the route – and got wild applause from our friends and neighbors. We were pulled by a 1949 Ford 3/4 ton pickup (owned and operated by Mr. Mommybrain) converted to propane and followed by a Prius. Our banner said “Foothill Community Democrats – Leading with Vision, not Division”.
TaDA – I’ve done my bit for today.
Yet another FDL FREERIDE for Hillary “Occupy Iraq Forever” Clinton. It is intellectually dishonest that she not be on this list. Rahm E is simply a shill for her. Where’s the speak truth to power shit when it comes to Boss Clinton?
Arcturis #125
Angelides is progressive but he’s also pragmatic. He can’t turn his back now on the people who, until seemingly everyone in politics made a slow right turn, were his mentors and supporters. I believe Angelides will be a better governor than Westly and hands down better than Arnohld. No one I know of has a perfect progressive record.
JWR #121

thanks for tip – that seems to have worked!
punaise #133 – that seems to have worked!
Hope it stays fixed. That did seem to clear up some of the issues I was havng with the site yesterday.
Thanks Howie and keep up the good work (and keep an open mind about Clark!) :)
mommybrain #132
sorry, but I can’t can’t call an establishment inside player like Angelides a “progressive” — still he’s the best of the lot — another election of the ‘least worst’
comments still stuck.
I’d be interested in how what Clark said was so narrowly a military point of view. I’ve met him many times and I’ve never come away with that impression. Howie, what kind of specific examples do you have?
I did not rule out Clark because he is not self-made, I ruled him out because I am not going to vote a General to the Presidency.
I don’t have anything against the rich per-se, but all things equal I am sick of people buying there way in – even if 2% of them think of me every 15th day. JFK was a good president as were many that were taken away from us – talk about election rigging.
Fucking machine.
I don’t think the country needs a King, or a General, or a Kingpin – we need a born leader. It could be that person is rich, or became rich, or maybe they are a General…I just doubt it. These people are around and look at the trouble we are in.
I am sick of the corporate takeover.
Hold down the shift key while clicking on reload (or refresh) that should force your browser to ignore the cache and load from the net.
Howie:
You do that very well. Thanks for the good information.
Selling health care to the Goopers?
They like the militaries ‘ single payer’ system don’t they?
Then theres the national security angle – universal health care is one of the most ergonomic ways to get national security – most bang for your buck no contest.
By shrinking the overall size of the state you could even cut taxes and institute universal cover!
America is falling behind all other comparable countries on this. Another freeping gooper selling point.
Whole thing should be a no brainer with the Hollywood machine the fascists have. Did you see them boo-ing Michael Moore at the Oscars?
I rest my case.
My two cents: I really love Howie Klein’s work.
Cheryl (#97), I’m in the middle of Sirota’s book, HOSTILE TAKEOVER too. And, like you, I’m loving it. It’s the best book I’ve read this year.
Suttree (#131), Hillary is on a lot of lists and a lot of people are not happy with her. Please take a look at this post I did yesterday where I called her a corporate whore in the title and then did my best to explain why we need leaders who represent the grassroots in leadership positions, not Big Business shills like her and her pal Lieberman.
Howie says: “What makes a Democratic primary crucial for me is when it pits a grassroots, independent-minded progressive against a company man.”
Howie, I got one for you, right here. Colleen Fernald, running for US Senate of California, against our spineless Democratic incumbent, Dianne Feinstein.
Colleen’s site here:
http://www.colleenfernaldforsenate.org/
Does she have a chance of beating Dianne? I think it very unlikely. But then, Dianne could always get sick or have a stroke from the guilt over the war she helped create or be indicted for some awful reason that we can’t foresee. And then we have somebody poised to leap into the breach, eh?
And if enough of us could make our own spineless Dem incumbents feel the heat — even just a tiny bit of heat — maybe it will modify some behavior.
I don’t intend to vote for Feinstein in the general. I’m torn between voting Green or voting Republican. Republican, you say? Yeah. If you hate a politician this much, you might as well twist the knife. If I’m going to get a senator that sucks Bush’s dick at every opportunity, it might as well be a Republican.
Maria (#138), the last thing I want to do is turn BLUE AMERICA– let alone FDL– into a Wes Clark discussion group. The last time I did that, on my own blog, I had to spend hours scrubbing the obscenities, homophobia, racism and anti-semitism from my site. I guess military leaders still attract followers like that (as well as fine people like you and Oscar). However, may I suggest that you go to Down With Tyanny and read all my posts about Clark starting with this one or this one. And if you take a look at my ACT BLUE page you’ll notice that I am campaigning for and collecting money for– which also means contributing my own money to– several ex-military men who are running for Congress. In fact no one accused me of being a knee-jerk anti-military person last week when I endorsed Admiral Joe Sestak and Patrick Murphy here at FDL. Soon I’ll be writing about an incredible, thoughtful former naval officer, Rick Penberthy, running for Congress in FL-05.
I threw some money at Pete McCloskey, in hopes that a little more direct opposition at this point may help. (I don’t live in that district, and I don’t know anything about the Dems in the primary. But I know where Pete stands, and I’d rather see him in Congress than a ‘company man’ Dem.)
Howie- I try to monitor the FDL comments as best I can. It’s great that you are still responding to comments on this thread!
FWIW, a lot of commenters move on to new threads, bec. there is a tradition of continuing discussion even if it is OT to the current post on the latest thread. The latest is http://www.firedoglake.com/200…..or-lamont/
I’ve been at FDL for a long time, and I remember the beginnings of the Lamont campaign at FDL- essentially being Jane: Howie’s savvy about these things, and he says Ned is the real deal. It would be great if you would stop by the new thread (Lamont/PP/Naral) and say hello, and give us your reaction to the great news from CT last night! thanks so much.
