We can talk about Duane Allman’s stinging guitar solo from the 24 minute live version of Whipping Post or wax rapsodic about Jason Pierce’s sui generis mix of Cop Shoot Cop
some time if you like, but I have a dirty secret to confess tonight — I’m a closet bubblegum fan. And ever since Gurney Joe Lieberman went flying into the bunker in the wake of Hurricane Lamont this afternoon, I haven’t been able to get that Boyce & Hart classic I Wonder What She’s Doing Tonight out of my head (and so now will pass it on to you).
Because it occurs to me that there must be many people rethinking their positions. And I wonder what they’re doing tonight:
- Chuck Schumer and the DEMOCRATIC Senatorial Campaign Committee, who has so far refused to commit to support the DEMOCRATIC nominee in the Connecticut race….
- Harry Reid, who cut a bad deal with Holy Joe to support him if he’d agree to run as a Democrat (Joe promptly punk’d him)….
- Hillary Clinton, who issued a bunch of bullshit claims about Joe’s fictional opposition to Social Security privatization in support of him….
- All those Connecticut Democrats who have been backing Holy Joe even after he threatened, caujolled and manipulated them because they thought he was always going to be around…
- All the members of the Gang of 14 who voted to put a foaming fundie freak like Strip Search Sammy on the Supreme Court and thought they’d never have to pay for it (especially the ones whose names begin with "Lincoln" and end in "Chafee")
- Holy Joe himself, who as Kos said, knows that he stands a better chance of winning as an independent (he needs those Republican votes), and can be sure that on the heels of this that Lamont will start pulling down the big support of groups who sat on the sidelines as things got hot…
- Those Democratic political consultants who think that the netroots are just an ATM machine whose values don’t need to be respected and are best treated like children. (I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the Lamont campaign — especially in the person of Ned’s campaign manager, Tom Swan — is the only one that has taken the time to sit down in front of a computer, figure out what the blogs are all about and learn how to work with us.)
- And last but not least, the women of America…and the men who support them…who have felt victimized, betrayed, angry, treated like second class citizens being herded like cattle into the Republic of Gilead by churlish little pricks like Joe Lieberman and everyone else who voted to put Strip Search Sammy on the bench for no other reason than political opportunism. Who ignored our emails, our letter, or faxes, our entreaties to please respect our dignity and our civil rights and who chose instead to suck up to GOP power and piss all over the constitution.
It may not be a happy time for some people, but for the ladies it’s a damn good night. Thanks to everyone who helped make it happen. The war’s not over, but this is an awfully good start.
(Update: Our FDL correspondent, Bob Adams, has more on his adventures at the convention.)

Fitz!!
fitz!
And yes, here’s to gumption and hard work and new hope for women in CT and elsewhere.
Ladies And Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space is one of my all-time fave albums.
OMG! I did it! Now I have to go read the post. Yee-ha, ladies night! So glad I stayed up late.
Jane!
Party people in the house, clap your hands.
Good night, ladies. Farewell, Leiberments!
Probably a Rollers fan, too. S-A-T-U-R…
;>)
Jane!
Great minds, huh VG?
Rock n’ Roll Jane. You done good!
hurm!
I wonder if Joe Klein has the presence of mind to feel the shadow of the hawk falling on him tonight. He’s next, you know.
It was a good night unless your name started with Mary and ended with Cheney.
In her interview with Letterman she kept saying “that if you had read my book” when Dave questioned her about issues, and Letterman didn’t even pretend that he had even scanned it.
By the fifth time she said it, she just sounded pathetic, especially when Dave suggested that her thoughts might have been worth more if she had expressed them in 2004, before the election.
If he’s not on yet in your timezone, it is worth catching IMO.
The link to the Alito Hall of Shame is not working. And a very passionate and heartfelt post tonight.
Great News! And Jane – great work! I love the way you’ve been pounding away on this exceedingly sore issue. Lieberman is, to quote Atrios, a “hideous human being”. We need to take advantage of the extreme blueness of states like Connecticut to get rid of such jerks. California is several points bluer, so it’s a shame someone didn’t challenge DiFi who’s almost as bad as Lieberman. I mean … there are two candidates opposing her, but neither has gotten any press.
We should send Lieberman some hankies.
yeh baby! hey joe how’d that kick in yer shriveled nut sack feel. netroots, power brokers of the future!

What’s good for women is good for the country.
What happened to Hillary? I used to defend her from all the redneck ignorami who hate strong women. Now I don’t know what to say, except-she sold out.
Oh, and Parrrrrtee!!!
Let the Nedroots campaign begin!
Whoopeedoo! Watching North Country and Frances and Charlize and Woody and Ms. Sissy ( and I birthed her chid) and love her! Life is gonna get way better, I hope!
Jane, I can handle Boyce & Hart.
But you’ve also stuck me with Kool & the Gang running through my head. And I fully expect it to be there all weekend. You’ll pay for that. Oh yes, you will pay…
Urban- Indeedy! Snap! (Padiddle? Joe’s headlights are 1 for 2)
…we may know what he is thinking by what he does but we will never know how he feels: take a gander at the Fitzgerald chart…impressive…with a natural house sequence – Aries rising and Capricorn on the midheaven with the sun and mercury and Jupiter perched right up there for all the world to see…wow

Iraq is disintegrating into ethnic cleansing. Ayatollah Sistani issued a fatwa on gays, video and liquor stores are being burnt to the ground.
If you are a conservative, these are signs of improvment in Iraq.
Wow. Is it me or is the happy, purple fingered Iraqis can vote talking point getting a little bit tiring?

GSD– I am celebrating way too much while others suffer all over the world. Makes me sick, and I am usually a downer round here… I mean it when I say, thanks for making me remember.
A little Lieberman fun for the FDL late night bash.

your link to fitz’s chart doesn’t work for me–it didn’t work for me on the previous thread either–could you check it, please?
So, when does the “if Joe Klein and Thomas Friedman joined forces to write Joementum’s turnaround speech what would it read like” contest start?
Iraq is disintegrating into ethnic cleansing. Ayatollah Sistani issued a fatwa on gays, video and liquor stores are being burnt to the ground.
Oh, but you know it’s all about Spreading Freedom! Those people are FREE to burn down their DVD and liquor stores. We GAVE them that freedom! Freedom is on the march!
hi mamayaga! you moved all of my friends and family with your beautifully written story of fitz and your gentle and humble perspective of the close encounter.

Thanks, angie — I was really glad I had a crowd to share the experience with.

If it’s Ladies’ Night, then there’s got to be some Dixie Chicks playing somewhere . . . like “Sin Wagon”:
He pushed me ’round
now I’m drawin’ the line
He lived his life
now I’m gonna go live mine
I’m sick on wastin’ my time
Well now I’ve been good for way too long
Found my red dress and I’m gonna throw it on
‘Bout to get too far gone
Praise the Lord and pass the ammunition
Need a little bit more of my tweleve ounce nutrition
One more helpin’ of what I’ve been havin’
I’m takin’ my turn on the sin wagon”

Well said, Jane — I hadn’t thought about the aftershocks of Ned’s victory. He is still the underdog, and an unlikely victor in August.
But you nailed it — even if Ned does not win the primary, we have served notice on the DC Dem’s that we are a force to be reckoned with.
Petticoat Junction is in Connecticut?
Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart, haven’t thought about them for ages. On the other hand, I have had the theme for “The Wild, Wild West” stuck in my cranium for months. Don’t go there. I’ve been listening to Echo and the Bunnyman in the car, so between sugar kisses and the first bars of the Wild West theme, I have been driving people crazy.
You called it right for Joe d’Gurney, Jane. The Democratic consultants don’t get it. They only get when someone is signing the check, but it’s a new dawn. We sign the checks, and we ain’t signing them over to the consultants.

And Chris Dodd can go suck eggs . . .
I just got home, put up a quick post on my blog along with a celebratory self-portrait, and stopped by FDL to say Hi!
It was a lot of work and a lot of fun tonight. I shot nearly 3 hours of video and managed to call Jane several times with updates from the convention. There were a lot of interesting, and downright weird things that happened tonight, but it’ll be tomorrow before I’ll have time to post details.
And Kobe barked “hello” when I was talking to Jane.
The Lamont showing tonight was wildly beyond even our most fanciful expectations. Ned is a major player now, and we’ll start seeing IMMEDIATE effects of that fact in the way the media covers him.
All the Lamont people were walking around going “pinch me, I’m dreaming”…goddamn, but it feels great to win one for the good guys!!!
OK, it’s 1AM here…g’night…I’ll post more tomorrow evening.
Meet you at the Milford, Oval, GSD and meet you at another Oval U.P.!
mamayaga– you da’ new non- bomb!
Bob Adams- thanks for the report- so looking forward to more info. I was watching/ listening to convention via internet, and I loved the cheers every time a report came up pro- Lamont. I heard a bit of sub- vocal stuff during the lead up to the final announcement- like okay, report one more for Lieberman (background oh no!) etc. etc.
…ooops!…the chart link (#24) doesn’t seem to be working…sorry to lead you astray…will research and try again.
A neighbor of my sister in Connecticut who wears gobs of gold jewelry told her tonight she was going to “look into the Lamont fellow” since she never cared for holy Joe anyway…
tryggth 29 — now THAT would be something.
Many thanks to Bob Adams for being our Man On the Scene. I’ll put up a link to your blog, Bob.
You know — Ned Lamont might be a bum, or he might be the greatest progressive Democrat since Bobby Kennedy. Time will tell.
But tonight — Ned Lamont is a hero, and we happy, happy, bloggy few — deserve a bunch of the credit, and all of the props we can give ourselves . . .
Yippee!
Lamont qualifying for the primary is GREAT news for all of us women.
His stand on Iraq and other issues is critical, but if he can reach out to half the electorate by supporting women’s rights, he might just pull in votes from some Republican ladies who aren’t comfortable being vessels. If politics is local, what is more local than your own body?
I’ve been writing to the DSCC every time they ask for money, saying not a penny they will get as long as they back Lieberman.
We small contributors can put our money with folks who represent us, not expecting contracts or resort vacations, just honest government in return. Refreshing thought!
It’s ladies night, so I guess that makes it allright. Woo hoo. I am so proud of everyone.
angie 26,
The reason you’re celebrating is because things like the Lamont thing today are tangible signs of taking back control of this country. We have to defeat the cancerous Bush government before the rest of the world has a chance. America is the problem, and we have to root out these bastards and get the country back on track doing good in the world. Or at least less harm.
great start for Ned. now it’s gonna get down and dirty. we’ve hit the mule between the eyes with a two by four so we have it’s attention. these guys play for keeps so keep your eyes on the prize. be ready to do what needs to be done. it should be one helluva fight.
OMG. I just hated “Petticoat Junction”. But the closing line of the song is so appropos:
“There’s Uncle Joe
he’s a movin’ kinda slow
at the Junction -
Petticoat Junction!”
And I have to say, my favorite solos on Allman Bros Live at Filmore East are from “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed”. I wore holes in that album trying to learn the solos on my (then) new red Telecaster.
“There’s Uncle Joe
he’s a movin’ kinda slow
You remember Uncle Joe, he was the on afraid to cut the cake. Joe’s run off to Fire Dog Lake.
“While were doing that blues…”
T’is funny…
I put on “Live at the Filmore East” earlier tonight while doing the dishes…
The came in here…
“Play all night.”..Jane
And a very, very large hand to all the CT Dems who stood up to what I think is downright harassment for democracy! Can anyone guess what Joe is doing now ? I know it’s the Sabbath. But politics come first, I’m so sure.
Then Ladies Night it is!
BTW, I have yesterday’s filings from Scooter and myself on my site if you want to take a peek.
http://patrickjfitzgerald.blog…..-pest.html
Sh*t! I bet Joe thinks we’re all a buncha b*tches, and as far as myself is concerned he’s right, but at least I aint’ his b*tch.
Tailkisser Joe is in a snit.
Too bad Joe. That’s what you get when you are a walking Republican talking point.
-GSD
Thanks, Jane for focusing on the importance of women’s issues. It seems like we’re just patted on the head and told to vote the way Daddy wants us to, everything will be all right, Daddy will take care of us, and all the while he’s fumbling under our skirt to take down our panties for a more tangible “love pat.” YUCK. Daddy’s gonna get some crushed grapes when he least expects it, if you know what I mean.
BTW, that B&H song is a bit before my time, but I have plenty of music guilty pleasures. Barry White, Earth Wind & Fire and the Stylistics are way up on that list.
shoephone – Hey, I play me a tele too! Greatest guitars ever made. (IMHO, of course.)
Oh, and Japanese/anime pop.
DON’T ASK.
“churlish little prick” – i don’t think i’ve ever seen joe lieberman more succinctly and accurately described. well, maybe if you had added “supremely sanctimonious”. you ladies give me hope. god bless you.
shoephone — I didn’t even think of that. That’s hilarious.
as someone who worked with the campaign against Joe in his first run for senate … my smile is as big as lake michigan! bravo Ned and bravo FDL for the support that makes a difference!!!
YKOS update – link to a discussion of a board for discussing roomates, etc:

still grinnin’ and hummin’ Oh yes it’s ladie’s night …
I’m planning on extending Ladies’ Night into tomorrow when Russ Feingold is gonna be in my neighborhood. I don’t mind being his bitch.

Growing Number of GOP Seats In Doubt – Vulnerability Seen In Unusual Places
Yes, siun! And a big hand to “Big guy” Weicker!
I have witnessed the Democratic Party change many times in my life. Tonight, my party changed again.
In 1968, I watched kids get beaten up on teevee – in Chicago in August. On the convention floor, the Democratic Party changed. Having lost its leaders, the party became the one I’ve loved ever since.
In 1976, I watched a peanut farmer from Georgia win the trust first of our Party and then — that fall — of our shattered nation whose long national nightmare was over, but who weren’t ready to spend any more time with the guy we awoke with at the helm. At that Summer Bicentennial Convention in Manhattan, the Democratic Party knew we had a people’s leader to show us the path from corruption and divisiveness.
In 1988, I watched a young Arkansas governor drone on and on, losing the attention of our convention, thinking (as we would again) that we could defeat a crook born with a silver spoon in his mouth (or, later, nose).
In 2000, I saw our party try to convince a fat and happy nation that the good times could keep rolling, but only if we kept the kleptocracy from power – and our party changed again, as we saw raw power cheat us of our win.
Tonight, though, our party changed again – and the power brokers and powers-that-were from coast to coast are lying awake in their beds, with their heads on high-thread-count linen, wondering, “what was that sound?” That sound was democracy, home again in the party named for it. Go Ned!
Jane, at the risk of sounding more wacky ;) sent you timely email just now.
A really great job here!!! (as usual)
And I really appreciated all of the timely updates, since this particular contest was especially appropriate for a new group blog, Lyssa Strada, where I posted something about tonight’s contest.
And it wasn’t just about the netroots, it was about women deciding we’ve had enough. Definitely, a night to celebrate women shifting the political discourse.
Areader,
That is before the Ney indictments and the rest of the Abramoff and Dukestir Cunningham scum has even hit the streets yet.
The Democrats may be disorganized and bickering, but the Republicans are collapsing and cannibalizing themselves.

Jane – and I thought that was precisely why you chose it! (you did it unconsciously I guess). I had an Uncle Joe. He was a pawnbroker and without a doubt was my favorite uncle. He coulda taught Leiberschmuck a thing or two.
JWR – I love Teles. But I sold that one a couple of years later to pay for… well, let’s just say I had some debts. Then I got a Gibson ES-335. I’ve had it for 25 years now and I absolutley love it. Robben Ford played it a couple of times and said “Damn. I think this is nicer than the one I used to have”. Now I’m looking for the sweetest old ES-175 I can find so I can get my jazz chops back. But I still dig Teles. For some reason, I just can’t play a Strat. It’s either a blessing or a curse, I’m not sure. But I fumble all over a Strat.
shoephone — nope, I was searching for “girls.”
It completely disgusts me, that Joe, with his mailing lists and his glossy photos and his glossy commercials. He thinks he can “buy” his way out of the mess he’s helped gotten this country into. He’s the ultimate consumerist-senator.
LJ/Aquaria 62, I have to ask–you mean like Cowboy Bebop music? I love stuff my sons have. But older son has lots of Japanese anime music, in Japanese.
Jeeze, who else besides me has noticed the freaking ads the telcos opposing network neutrality have plastered everywhere? I am sick to death of this kind of hype. It’s on Yahoo, it’s freaking everywhere.
What is so freaking wrong with the telcos responding to demand, instead of controlling supply? Is it because then they can’t ENRON us?
*SHEESH*
Well, the grrrl power has definitely been turned on tonight!
I LOVED petticoat junction. Well, I had a crush on the girls, and I loved Fred the painter… she was, um… a pretense of things to come? Just adolescent fantasies I guess.
I used to play this theme at work when the big bosses had gone out to a meeting, just to entertain the other drones. I sang along, ’cause it’s fun! Try it!
Come ride the little train that is rolling down the tracks to the junction.
(Petticoat Junction)
Forget about your cares, it is time to relax at the junction.
(Petticoat Junction)
Lotsa curves, you bet. Even more when you get…
To the junction, Petticoat Junction.
There’s a little hotel called the Shady Rest at the junction.
(Petticoat Junction)
It is run by Kate, come and be her guest at the junction.
(Petticoat Junction)
And that’s Uncle Joe, he’s a movin’ kind of slow…
at the junction, Petticoat Junction!
(woooOoooOOOooooOOOOOOooooooooo!)
I just hope I’m not expected to wear gingham.
Excellent rant, Jane!
This link hopefully will take you to the Alito “Hall of Shame.”
http://www.senate.gov/legislat…..1#position
shoephone – An ES-335, eh? (drooling) I don’t care much for Strat’s because I tend to fumble all over that funky middle pickup. And it’s funny, my non-jazz background always makes me think of 175’s as Steve Howe guitars. Best of luck on your quest.
I used to play a strat and loved it. I always thought tele’s sounded a little thin. I’m saving my pennies for a Les Paul-I love that warm fat sound and don’t mind the weight.
LJ/Aquaria 62 – I’m quite partial to the sound track from Neon Genesis Evangelion myself …
Jane, wait ’til you meet Rick Penberthy, progressive Democrat taking on extreme right loon incumbent Ginny Brown-Waite in FL-05, and his manager, Kevin Cate. Kevin’s in his 20’s and blogging comes natural for him. He and Rick have thoroughly embraced it. In fact Rick wrote a blog yesterday for MyDD about Net Neutrality. (I wish blogging came more naturally to me; you’ll have to show me how to do links on FDL. Here’s the url for Rick’s story: http://www.mydd.com/story/2006/5/18/2237/70846.) The Florida primary’s not ’til September 5 and I expect to do a story about Rick’s campaign before then.
mui – yep! and Weicker was warm and generous behind the scenes as well as a good guy politically. Glad he stood up for Ned … and his support gives good encouragement to the independents and any leftover moderate repubs who are tired of Bushisms.
Margot:
The Cowboy Bebop music is excellent, but my tastes are less…jazzy and more pop.
The writer of the Cowboy Bebop theme is the prolific Yoko Kanno, who is so talented a composer that I swear John Williams ripped her off. Just compare her “Dance of the Curse” from Escaflowne to the “Duel of the Fates” from SW: Phantom Menace, and you’ll see what I mean.
Two of my favorite songs that she’s written are “Yubiwa,” the love theme from Escaflowne, and “Kiseki No Umi,” the opening theme for Record of Lodoss War. Yubiwa is one of those songs that will almost make you weep, it’s so damned beautiful. But don’t get me started… ;)
Siun:
That anime is The One No One Can Mention in our home, for some reason. My husband and son hate it for some reason unknown to me, and I’m okay with that. It’s not my kind of anime, because it has robots in it. I see robots, I’m outta there. Give me Hana Yori Dango, or Kare Kano. You know…Girly anime.
Hey, I’m a chick. That’s what I dig.
And a big hand to Howie Klein who published that piece on Huffington that made Joe’s creatures apparently go ballistic, thereby making themselves look like ungracious churls.
oh god. The thread has now descended into guitar-talk. And it’s all my fault. No wonder everyone else has left! Will need absolution from Jane. Must consult the Talmud to see how we Jews handle that.
Last guitar comment from me: Duktig – I really don’t know how anyone escapes a dislocated shoulder playing a Les Paul. Enough of that -
I would just love to be a fly on the wall of the DLC executive offices tomorrow morning! It seems like all the money I’m going to send Ned from here on out will be used trying to diffuse the nasty Joe ads that are about to begin.
OfT: Per the late local news, Darth Cheney flies into SFO tomorrow night with no public events scheduled until a Monday fundraiser for John Doolittle in Sacramento. Is there a Bohemian Grove party this weekend? Or maybe a little ticker checkup at Stanford Medical Center? Or perhaps some Iran post-invasion planning with George Schultz at the Hoover Institute?
=========
Had enough?
=========
ok, my comment (#79?) is awaiting moderation, prolly cause it’s so many lines with spaces.
But I need to make a correction – I meant “Worker Bees”, not “Drones”.
Now off to watch Letterman smackdown “where’s Mary?” Cheney. She was a “Dick” before the 2000 election, trying to convince her gay and lesbian peers that Adolf Coors’ family was worker- and gay-friendly…. as if!
Letterman’s writers have been KILLING, lately, with gems about the current regime, even if they do not get the same respect as Jon Stewart’s and Colbert’s. The “Great Moments in Presidential Speeches” gag is gold, each and every time.
Siun, I don’t have much of a memory of politics that goes back, but I can remember at least one major Dem from out of state praising Weicker.
Shoephone:
Hey, don’t sweat it.
Over at Atrios, they found that the best troll repellent was…
A POETRY THREAD!
Kept them away better than Raid.
Just checked in on Ladies’ Night and thought I would share part of tonight’s email from one of my sisters in CT who helped bring this great Ned victory today. And, judging by the amount of names she got on her petitions by herself; Ned will be a Senator. So there!
“Last night I went to the Democratic Committee meeting because the chairman had told me a Lieberman representative was planning to attend and I was curious what he might say. He didn’t even show up! Anyway, I was given a copy of the previous meeting’s minutes, a meeting attended by all the committee members. Glancing at the list of members, I was pleased to see I had gotten petition signatures from virtually all of them. I had almost 80 signatures with more to contact but I think I can stop now.”
OPB airing Austin City Limits right now with The Killers. Guitarist used Ibanez destroyer and a Les Paul. The last song was accompanied by a gowned African American gospel chorus. sweet.
Go Ned !!!
Hey, Howie Klein’s here. Howie, I just met you the other night at Drinking Liberally. I wasn’t really drinking. But I was liberal.
I gather in the Reaganite era it wasn’t “fashionable” to like Weicker either.
Deborah, it seems like Lieberman is working like this is some sort of Boss Tweed era or something. I hope all those stories come out.
Mui:
Alas, you gather correctly.
I remember seeing Lowell Weicker on various wonk shows back in the late 70s and early 80s, and thinking, “This is a Republican? No way!” The guy was a lot further left than what usually passes for a Dem pol here in Texas.
Hey everybody, Dan Balz at the WaPo is already taking questions for his Monday 11 am online chat. Let’s swamp him with questions about Ned’s showing at the convention, what it means for the DINOs, if Joe’s scare will rock the DLC, whether these delegates were party insiders turning against an unpopular Senator, and how the damn Gate’s getting Crashed!
http://www.washingtonpost.com/…..01207.html
hey there….you come here often?
I wish punaise was here.
Yes LJ/Aquaria, I can remember listening to some local talk show. I probably mentioned this before, but the Republican host would go on these rants that had liberals laughing. The attitude was so unreasonable, you’d think Weicker turned CT into a communist state and left alcohol bottles littered all over Hartford or something.
Stormy, stormy Monday
Tuesday’s just the same
TSF – hah! or boo! or yoo hoo!
(good comment at #69)
106 — thanks, there’s something in the air, I can smell it all the way from Connecticut. It just feels different tonight, paradigms shifting silently….
brother, can you paradigm?
hasta manana, todos
LJ/Aquaria – nodding, because of Weicker’s staffers, I managed a “republican” campaign … we laughed about it a lot but integrity is more important than party labels and that’s what his team had.
Chris Dodd has never been there – when asked about blocking US funding for death squads in Central America, Dodd, who was positioning himself the ultimate expert liberal on Central America suggested cutting the funds in half … so I guess there would be only 1/2 the number of innocents, missionary nuns and catholic bishops murdered. He’s in the Lieberman mold but with a slightly thicker democratic veneer.
Teddy (107). The “old-fashioned liberal” bites back and women get to have their say finally on government interference with personal lives?
In thinking back to the campaign I managed, one of the ground rules with the party was no money or support from the party until after the primary … let the voters decide and only then did the party come in. Wish that was the Dems rule in CT this year!
And siun, if certain big guys endorse Lamont, then you know Lamont is a good man. Paradigms are indeed shifting.
Siun:
You fight with the Dem you have down here. Hell, we’re lucky if we can get anybody to run Dem anymore. But the good news is that you don’t have to live in your district to run for Rep. So…
I’ve been entertaining wicked fantasies about Ciro Rodriguez challenging Henry Bonilla in ‘08, if Pinche Vanilla wins again, which is kinda likely. But Ciro might be able to put the fear of God in him.
That would be lots of fun. :)
Pinche Vanilla? Is that name for real?
“I think it’s going to be harmful of our party and the chances of our congressional candidate, our Democratic challengers and our gubernatorial candidates,” he said “But it’s his decision.”
I think Colin McEnroe has a good argument against Joe’s “assertions.” Besides as far as I can tell he has given *no* money to Nancy Johnson’s opponent.
I love you.
Who’s talking about Cowboy Bebop? Next to Serial Experiments: Lain my favorite anime EVER. I need to own the series, I watch it all the time & got my nephew addicted.
Scratch that: I most certainly do NOT need to own it. I’d be watching it all the time and get nothing done
Hi Howie!
g’nite all … got to rest up for Ykos!
great work Bob and Jane and Ned and …wow!
between Lamont and the posts over at markfromireland’s just up* … I’m be grinning in my sleep!

Congratulations are in order for real liberals and progressives in Connecticut.
Consider it destiny (and irony, too, I suppose) that the fight to reclaim this country starts in the “Constitution State.”
So is the party boss with a cigar and suitcases full of cash officially over yet? Mwahaha.
Matt O. I once heard or read that Constitution State had a double meaning, colonial and post-colonial. CT was so overpopulated in the post–Colonial era, people had to leave to earn their way & some of them became politicians.
You won’t catch me singing and dancing for Daddy Warbucks, that’s for sure.
mui, I had heard that, too, but thought it was amusing regardless.
The implication being that CT is a place where people are born so they can go out and plague the world is funny. But yeah, you don’t want these people like Bush, Lieberman and Ann Coulter to even reflect on you. I heard Coulter described as a “good girl from CT” by people who don’t know CT very well.
Lieberman’s trouble is gonna be that the bulk of his DC staff and his campaign staff support is tied to the inevitability of his incumbency.
They’ve sold their souls in pursuit of power. There’s no principle operating here. If he no longer has a certain line to power, then he has nothing for them.
This has all the makings of a death spiral. There will be some tactical bailing by senior campaign staff. That will lead to some bailing by others.
He could have saved this situation. It would have been hard, but he could have. The parodies that have been thrown up “But this is MY seat” seem, at this point, to not be parodies at all.
Tremendous victory for the netroots. Ned’s name recognition will have jumped substantially off of this. And he should have a couple of days of dog bites man news stories to pump the name recognition futher.
Oh God, don’t get me started on Coulter…
Must be a lot of stomach cramps in the “Democratic Establishment” tonight!
Eye candy for the ladies: Fired up Wesley Clark, Jr.
“John McCain is just George Bush without Jesus Christ”
I guess the Wes Clark Jr. link was too hot to handle.
Here’s a second try:

Well, I just fell asleep in front of the ol’ teevee and got my arse EPU’d, but wanted to make sure to high five a few fellow Firesign fans before I… uh… well, go back to sleep. ;^)
And now I truly am off for some sack time. GO NED!!!!!!
“And we bid you good night.. good night… good niiiiggghhht.”
^^^(Oy… I’m too sober to be making formatting errors like that!)^^^
I really love that monogrammed hanky idea! Wouldn’t it be fantastic to have a supply of those to hand out after the election? I’m going to look into that possibility…..
Saw some of the Mary Cheney appearance on David Letterman. She is another afflicted eye-blinker who mostly comes off as an obedient daughter with a good dose of that unmistakable nasty Chenyness. Pathetic, really. David was relentless with the pointed questioning. A pretty squirmy segment. Why would anybody want to read that book?
Latino media are planning a big voter drive telethon soon. Ha!
Jayackroyd (127). Can’t get Schumer’s “we’re a party of incumbents,” out of my head. He sounded so snooty.
Yeah Matt O. Coulter. People should know that “good” girls and boys from CT and probably New England in general, don’t talk about religion as much as she does.

“The Democratic party has no business nominating a pro-war Senator,” said Gregory Spear of West Hartford (pictured above, second from left), holding a sign reading, “Bring the troops home now… Stop the War!” According to Connecticut Opposes the War, a majority of Connecticut residents are opposed to the war in Iraq, and an even higher percentage of Democrats are against the war. “The Democrats are succumbing to Lieberman’s threat to run as an independent, split the Democratic vote, and get a Republican elected. Threatening to elect a Republican shows that Lieberman is not running like a true Democrat.”

Congrats to all of you for Ned Lamont. It is unbelievable that he decided to run in mid March and has made it to the Primary. People still stroking Joe will try to pass this off as trying to teach “Joe a lesson” or “just want to debate issues”……however, I think the people that are ready for change won big time last night ….these delegates will help people open their eyes to the fact that when Joe’s vote is really needed, the SLEEPER TURNCOAT that resides deep in Joe’s bowels awakens. You are all so awesome here! Hat tips all around.
For those of you that are awake – Barack Obama is about to speak at the Book Convention in D.C. on CSPAN-2
Shoephone 116
I think that is not a real name. Pinche is a cute word to the gringo ear but not recommended around hispanic grandparents.
Congratulations firedoglake. Your contribution to Lamont’s 33% is significant. Ted’s stunning result will jolt the Dems and resonate into the Mid Terms. More than this, the Party will be compelled to treat you with the respect that you have earned as Players on the national political stage.
Do have a smashing Ladies Night all. Cheers.
From yesterday’s NY Times:
“A very simple thing happened that changed Democratic politics dramatically, and that was that the war turned bad,” Mr. [Al]From said, adding of the senator’s critics: “There’s a group in our party that makes a lot of noise and I don’t think they’ve ever won an election. They’re trying to take out one of the great statesmen our party has and that’s wrong.”
Nothing worse than a “great statesman” who hangs around too long, Al. Worse than relatives and old fish. Step aside Al before the train runs you over.
Klaatue, Barada, Nix-Joe.

WTF, I wish he would run as an independent. It would clear the air, and raise little Joe’s integrity as to who and what he really represents..AIPAC and Israel. WTF, being that he sucks up to a president who thinks the constitution “is just a god damned piece paper”, his conscience is relieved by having betrayed what he swore to uphold
the November 06 election will be about people power, a referendum on whether or not the US can function in today’s times as a representative democracy. Washington has become an institution unto itself, where the pols represent themselves while abusing the people’s trust and money to enrich themselves in gold and status. If the people can throw out the republican culture of corruption and at the same time decimate the Vichy Dem DLC by throwing out the likes of Holy Joe, then the message will be unmistakable and the people may get their country back. If not, well then more of the past 6 years of descent, division, and ruin.
.
The news (as reported in the papers) is all good for Ned on this — the AP mentions Ned in the lead and at the NYT, the lead is that Ned forced a primary. The times also mentions that he small towns supported Ned because the cities have “established Democratic” organizations (read machine bosses)
This is great news coverage — worth millions in adds.
PS — Petticoat Junction was a childhood fave, it followed “Green Acres” As mentioned above, the theme was great on Petticoat junction. In fact, both had great semi-rockability theme songs
Good one GSD 144. Have to laugh quietly, spouse still asleep.
You asked on last thread about one word links. If you have a mac, there is a handy applet called Blog Assist that’s a free download. The PC world may well have an equivalent but I don’t go there.
It has the html tags and you easily copy and paste.
It’s a beautiful morning on the right coast. The birdies are singing and hopefully Ned is sleeping in—it may be the last time he gets to do that in the foreseeable future.
It will be very interesting to watch the tectonic plates in motion this summer. The first big tremor started last night. Many more to come, I hope.
PPS — For all you FDL’ers who have a general rule against giving money in democratic primaries, I urge you, in this case, to consider giving to Ned Lamont. With this one primary challenge, we could shake, if not forever change, the Washington Democratic establishment common wisdom about how campaigns are run. They are top down, we are bottom up. As John “Honey Fitz” Fitzgerald said in his late -1800’s campaigns in Boston,
“The People, not the bosses, should rule!”
I say we adopt that as our battle cry this year — and forever.
RevDeb — good morning to you too! I think those tectonics started in motion way back in 2002/2003, when a little-known governor from a northeastern state launched a campaign fueled by the grassroots…last night was another major fault line getting heaved by the ‘roots again, another major tremor in a series of tremors that give advance warning of the major earthquake(s) yet to occur.
I’m hoping by November we’ve had mega-volcanic action. And I’m going to do my best to bring it on.
Been hand-folding brochures all night and again this morning for a female candidate running in a red district typically voting for male conservatives. I think we’re going to see more of that tectonic action, too.
BTW, any of you folks looking for ways to help take back our country, contact the local Dem office and see if they need office supplies. Even things like toner cartridges make a dent in their budget. I spent more than $150 on a single cartridge last night. OUCH.
Lest we forget, Holy Joe is the only Senator who argued for torture – pro-torture – during Abu Gonzales’ confirmation hearing. Not even Hatch or Sessions who can always be counted on to carry the WH’s crazy water, were crazy enough to do that.
The most disgusting and shameful thing I’ve ever seen on the Senate floor. Joe is not a human being let alone a Democrat.
pluege (146) — exactly. I’ve been working on wrapping some words around that very issue so that I can explain it to both Dems and Republicans alike; the Republicans I know are beginning to look for something. They and their Dem counterparts need to know this isn’t their granddaddies’ Democratic Party any more.
We are on the verge of a major cultural change here in the U.S., one in which the people expect and demand a more immediate relationship between their values and their representatives. The internet makes it very easy to communicate their sentiments in way that’s never been possible before; we are in the middle of massive disintermediation like we’ve never seen.
Think about it: it is technically possible for an entire district, whether county commissioner or Congressional in size, to provide IMMEDIATE feedback to their representatives. It is only for the lack of political will and individual’s economics that this is not already happening.
We here in the blogosphere are the innovators and early adopters; we are setting an example for the late adopters and laggards who eventually will follow us.
And Joementum and the old machine had best catch this early warning signal…nah. Nevermind. It is clearly too late for some of them, they are dinosaurs who cannot evolve and gain wings.
I’m shocked, shocked I tell you.
Just read through this morning’s Boston Globe, (the glob) and there was narry a word about Ned and Joe. Not even in the tiny column on B2, “New England in Brief.”
Could it be that the Glob owned by the NYT is trying to play down this pesky little annoyance in the state that shares our largest border?
RevDeb — no surprise at all. Did some research last year on newspaper ownership; if I’m not mistaken, at that time 90+% of newspapers in the U.S. were owned by organizations with strong Likudnik relations.
It’s actually worse than the consolidation of television ownership.
Morning All!!
I just wanted to say hello and have a lovely weekend.!
Between FDL tech problems, the ongoing preparations
for my son’s wedding (only weeks away), and the White Sox
I’ve not been around for a couple of days. (Oh yes, work does
interfere darn it).
The news about NED LAMONT is great and gives me some hope.
I’m off for planting day at my building and then to the residence to
be with my mom for a while.
I hope to be around tonight.
Leslie
P.S. “The People, not the bosses, should rule!”
new thread
I think Lieberman’s rotten personality is one of his greatest PR tools: he takes pride in being a jerk, and draws attention to it. His attitude toward his constituents is somewhere between sanctimonious contempt and active hostility. It’s bizarre.
But one effect of this is that it distracts us from his second most glaring flaw—namely, that he’s an idiot and a bore. For a reminder of his sixth-ratedness, just visit his campaign website. You’ll find the word accommodate spelled (twice) with one ‘m’, which sets a tone consistent with the Brand, really. ‘Low-class’ is what comes to mind. Sorry.
good morning, Glory. great party last night!
but, that was yesterday and we need to keep looking to the future. some people were saying things like “it’s a great achievement for Ned to get on the ballot. he faces an uphill battle and even if he doesn’t win the primary…”
DON’T EVEN TALK LIKE THAT. Make Victory the plan. And put your money where your mouth is! Now’s the time!
keep in mind Americans failed the clear-as-bell test of the 04 election. Never will an election be more obvious that an incumbant should not be returned to office than in 2004. All the lies, deceit, and failures associated with the Iraq invasion, as well as the politics-first and foremost ways of the bushliar-criminal regime were well known at the time of the election and Americans proved they didn’t care; that they’d rather be frightened, cowed sheople than do the hard work of being informed and knowing the truth that is required for a democracy to succeed and survive.
2006 looks to be a last chance event for Americans to stave off the death of the USA as a force for good in the world. Inherent in a democrat victory in 2006 is restoring the rule of law and trying the bushliar-criminal regime for their crimes against humanity and the US constitution.
Americans have a clear choice in 2006: return the US to its hard won place as a leader among the world community by throwing out republican rule, or enshrine the US’ bush-generated place as a pariah among nations and today’s most dangerous threat to humanity. Americans failed a similarly clear choice in 2004; lets hope 2006 is not a repeat performance.
I just gave more money to NED. Go Ned.
I just gave more money to NED. Go Ned. Go Progressives
Oh, I guess Schumer technically “refuses to commit.” He does do some dancing around, but it’s not even fancy dancin’. I think he spells it all out pretty clearly: “Our general rule, and I don’t think there’s been an exception, is that we support the Democrat against the Republicans. We expect Lieberman will win, but if he doesn’t and Ned wins, my guess is we will support him. We haven’t taken a position on that but we’ve almost never deviated. I do not know of a time that the Democrats have deviated and not supported the Democrat.”
That tells me all I need to know. It’s politicianese for of course we’ll support Ned, but in the meantime we’re still dealing with an incumbent who’s a real tool. Schumer says they will support the Dem over a Repub AND an indie should anyone try THAT route: “I do not know of a time that the Democrats have deviated and not supported the Democrat.” C’mon, you’re busting balls, Jane.
Congrats ladies! Cong-rats to all!
Women hold up half the sky!
The Gilead goopers ( we’re an empire now my arse ) got nothing – some pathetic battle of the bulge down on the border? Que? – nothing!
And so we roll on (with or without our Achilles.)
This train is bound for glory.
And coffin eyed Joe?
Where did you come from? Where do you go?
Don’t come back now coffin-eye Joe.
Love you Jane you little dragon-slayer you.
Great diary! Joe’s gotta go. One change I would make to this statement “and last but not least, the women of America…and the men who support them…who have felt victimized…” Felt? We haven’t “felt” victimized. We HAVE BEEN victimized! Call it what it is an own it girlfriend. That’s where the empowerment is.
I am going to donate to Lamont next month. This month I am tapped out donating to Arizona candidates. Every little victory across the country gives me hope.
I truly feel pity for the people of Connecticut who have had to put up with this traitorous fuckhead, Lieberman. He’s their Zell Miller – he knows that if he switches to the Republican Party, his goose will be cooked for sure, so he plays the part of a “good Democrat” the Republicans can manipulate.
He cares nothing about the Democratic Party, yet the mainstream leadership continues to be blindly supporting him in the face of overwhelming digust of the rank and file Democrats. And, if he turns independent and stabs Reid, Clinton and Schumer in the back, he could split the vote in Connecticut and hand the election to the Republicans. He’s angling for a cabinet position, maybe even Rumsfeld’s job, and perhaps this is his real motivation. What a piece of shit.
They are wondering when and why the population woke up.
