As Atrios notes, Lieberman may be denigrating Ned Lamont's ads and strutting around like a puffed-up little jackanape talkin' trash about facing down the oil companies, but the only thing he's really shown himself capable of getting tough with of late are rape victims on hospital gurneys.
The Democratic Party Convention starts tomorrow and DavidNYC makes an important point over at the Swing State Project: the Lieberman camp is trying to set expectations high for Ned so that they can say he underperformed if it doesn't happen. Let's get one thing straight. Ned Lamont is a people's candidate. State Party Machine Boss Lieberman has said he will spend all the party's money on his own ads and starve out every other Democrat if Lamont presents a serious threat. The state Democratic party is not going to be the thing that puts Lamont over the top.
As Markos' noted on Colin McEnroe's show recently, it's probably much better from a symbolic point of view if Ned makes history by being the first candidate to force a primary by collecting signatures and going around the party machinery, which would happen if he didn't get 15% of the convention delegates. Ned is gaining ground. Pro-choice women in the state have rallied behind him while none have come out for Enrique Suave Lieberman, and now grassroots labor is lining up behind Ned too. The churlish Lieberman is hemohrraging support and time is not on his side.
If Ned gets enough delegates tomorrow to get on the ballot that's great, the resources that would otherwise go to collecting signatures can go to something else. But if he doesn't it is neither a surprise nor should it be an indicator of weakness -- just the opposite. In spite of the party muscle that is standing in opposition to Ned, people like CTblogger, thirdparty, the folks at MyLeftNutmeg and our own Connecticut Bob Adams are volunteering, organizing and showing up for Ned and that is a force to be reckoned with.
We should know the results of the convention by tomorrow evening and hopefully Connecticut Bob will be our man-on-the-scene. Whatever happens, it's win-win for Ned. Lieberman will start the day the way he finished it: a loser.

In Indiana, voting at Democratic State Party Conventions is done in secret. I hope the same is true in the Nutmeg State — delegates can vote honestly if there are no prying eyes insuring “voting right”.
Getting 1 out of 6 grass-rootish Democrats on the anti-war issue shouldn’t be difficult. I’m optimistic but Ned is wise collecting signatures as a backup plan. Good leadership!
Great photoshop opportunity with the loser image. find a really bad picture of Lieberman and photoshop a hand on his forehead with the loser sign.Perfect.
btw, out in the Netroots, FDL server is still pokey …
OT–and sorry if this was posted on the previous thread, but this is a fly-by–Gregory interviewing Bush on Hardball, and Bush says “we’re not going to retreat hastily–”
Shifting weasel wording now in progress.
And Gregory says to Dubya: “your war…”
How’s that Snow Job of doin’ one-on-ones workin’ out for ya, Boy George?
ok they just killed somebody trying to cross the border in San Ysidro– get ready for an uncivil war!
I’m beginning to get the feeling that all those advisors to the Democrats are on Karl Rove’s payroll.
tomorrow isn’t just another Friday, it’s gonna be FitzDay ! Get those servers all tweaked !
Real hard time getting this on, meant for any thread really. My usual OT links.
Hi everybody, just getting caught up after vaca shopping today. Found a great forties dress that would have fit me last summer but after so much ice cream and FDL all winter, I didn’t even try it on. There is a great hat I have my eye on. Sorry I missed the what are you wearing thread.
During my time in exile from FDL (couldn’t go anywhere at all, but just opened another window cuz I was skeered to close completely), I found a couple of pieces of information I thought were interesting.
Jim Marcinkowski is running for Congress in Mich 8th, and I think this is a great candidate for FDL to get behind. Jim is one of the 3 ex-CIA guys who testified for the Senate regarding the Plame issue, along with Larry Johnson and Vincent Cannistraro. He has the support of many, many unions and needs money. I would like to propose we open an actblue page for him, whaddya think. (He has a frontpage link to “Plame Gate” on his campaign website.
Jim Marcinkowski
Also, via Pat Lang’s site, I found an amazing series of e-mails between Joe Galloway and Larry DiRita, Rummy’s press fool, with encouragement from McCaffrey to publish. Galloway is amazing. This should be sent to clueless Hil.
Galloway/DiRita
Finally, I heard on NPR that Russ and Arlen had a dustup in the Senate today over the Gay Marriage thing, and when Russ walked out, Arlen said,”Good Riddance”. I can’t wait to hear what Russ has to say about this. For him to walk out of the Senate, this had to be pretty hot.
Spelling police: hemorrhaging, jackanapes (this is the singular). Just a warning and you might want to get that back taillight looked at.
too funny, Hugh! LOL!!
Maybe Dwight’s trying to take over the CIA because he’s the one who received the “Match begins tomorrow” message.
I don’t know about the historic part of the signatures. I hope Lamont gets the 15%. But maybe we should see it as just another challenge if he doesn’t.Noone said this primary was going to be easy.
Having server problems.
Damn, links didn’t copy, Here they are:

and
Joe Galloway and the “Talking Dog”
sorry, saved it in copy in case it got lost.
Local NPR is doing an hour on the hearings today; Patsy Roberts is a warmonger asshole.
Talking about “critics’ ‘performance’ “, he’s yelling, reprising Al Qaeda’s greatest hits, followed by the Dead remark. Be Afraid, Code Red, Code Red.
Hey Joe, you know Ned is the real deal, so why the dishonorable mensch shun?
I saw Leslie Blitzkreig on CNN shilling for Loserman. He phrased it as Ned Lamont way behind, which wasn’t the point–but Wolfie would have you believe it was. This suggests that the MSM is also getting worried that their favorite democrat will go down.
Crooks and Liars has the report. Oh, speaking of C&L, I was having trouble getting to them until I flushed the Cache on my browser and issued the command line:
ipconfig /flushdns
I’ve been away for awhile, so if someone else has said this, sorry for duplicating the notice.
Lamont seems like a good man, I would love to see him beat Lieberman.
http://www.buzzflash.com/edito.....06036.html
come on, y’all!
Ha! punaise.
Ron– saw that live– made me heave.
I wish I lived in CT so I could campaign for Ned. Kennedy has a challenger, but I doubt it matters. We still like Ted ok and Kerry too. I wish they were Russ, but what can you do, move to Wisconsin? And leave my beautiful ocean? Not bloody likely!
Beel- Sup Yo
Here is the official statement from the excellent Russ Feingold:
http://www.dailykos.com/storyo.....16392/8661
things are so bad in Indiana that 5-term GOP Senator Dick Lugar has no Democratic challenger yet. When Lugar was first elected in 1972, he was one of the most conservative GOPpers but nowadays, he is almost up there with Snowe and Chaffee…the GOP Senate has so lurched rightwards!
Joe will feel the Joementum climax with a burning sensation and a disappointing “plop.”
Feel the Nedrenaline!
Jane!
This one’s for you, sweetie.
from me and watertiger
i just read a local article about ned’s campaign and the “democratic party” support for holy joe. it made me sick that all these connecticut politicians are saying that this is a one issue situation and joe has done lots of good stuff. they disagree in Iraq but that’s not enough reason to change. i guess it’s time to start writing letters to the editor.
I couldn’t find Lamont’s stand on Net Neutrality on his website, so I sent an enquiry to Lamont’s media email just before 10pm eastern last night, using FDL as reference.
Reply in mail timestamped before 6am eastern today says:
“Ned supports Net Neutrality. Here is his statement which was up on our site recently:
“The internet is a powerful force for change and the free flow of information. It is also unique as an egalitarian environment powered by the quality of ideas rather than the depth of a corporate pocketbook. Creating a tiered internet would cripple that unique environment and suppress what has become an unparalleled marketplace of ideas.
“We cannot allow the internet as we know it to be fundamentally altered to favor a handful of large companies, at the expense of democratic discourse, entrepreneurs, and small businesses. I applaud Representatives Boucher and Markey, and the other co-sponsors of the Network Neutrality Act, for taking on this critical issue.
“When I am elected in November, I will do the same in the U.S. Senate, introducing and fighting for net neutrality legislation on that side of Capitol Hill.”
—–
I am impressed. This is what about 48 hrs prior to convention? Looks to me like Ned has not only assembled a talented, dedicated and effective team, he has the right stand on the issue(s).
I sent thanks and good luck in their quest. I think they’ll do better than expected.
OT I posted this to thunderous silence earlier today but oh well, you can always skip over it.
From the manual on how to become Director of the CIA:
Rule 1: Lie. You will be doing a lot of this in your new job so you might as well get started now. Of course, if you have been nominated for this position, you probably are already quite good at it.
A few pointers:
If you are a political appointee, stress that you are nonpartisan. Decry politics and politicization. Look mournful while saying this.
If you have done things that are frankly illegal, remember that most people mistake repetition for truth. Repeat as necessary that everything you have ever done is legal. Deny even clear evidence to the contrary. You will find equivocation is your friend.
Rule 2: OK, having been nominated for this post, we’ll just take it for granted that you are, shall we say, character challenged. Don’t worry. Cite your long and sterling service. BUT DO NOT GO INTO DETAILS! Details are like facts, which while a nuisance can be twisted by the unscrupulous into a portrait of who you are and what you have been up to. This is never good. If you must go into details, say you like Shakespeare or something.
Another pointer:
If you have headed up anything, just stress how long you were there. Remember there will always be partisan hacks, sorry friendly supporters, out there who will be more than willing to say what a great job you did even if involved eating small children. Remember too that there will be a few hatchetmen from the “other side” spewing charges that you were inept and unprincipled then and unqualifed for your new position now. When this happens, don’t panic. Refer to Rule 1.
Rule 3: Promise cooperation and openness. No one will believe this but, being a promise, it can’t be disproved and once you are confirmed it won’t matter.
Another pointer:
Defer embarrassing issues to closed session, there you can not answer at greater length and more candidly.
Rule 4: Keep calm. Be patient. Remember once you get the job, you’ll have the files on all these guys and I mean all these guys.
Rule 5: I’m not being judgmental here but if you have “unorthodox” hobbies, say like hookers, ease off them during the hearings. You will have plenty of time for all that later.
(PS: Just a friendly heads up: if you have these kind of interests which, of course, you don’t, though we have had some problems with them lately, I hope you have been paying for them yourself, and in cash. We live in a cruel and malicious world which is precisely why we need men like you in positions like these.)
Well having read this, I’m sure you’re well on your way to a successful confirmation and I just want to be the first to congratulate you and welcome you into your new job, Mr. Director!
Now that the President has signed into the law the seventh tax break for the rich during wartime, House Republicans have decided to move fast on a bill that promotes tax breaks for the rich.
hello my fellow patriots,
i have 2 things to say this beautiful L.A. afternoon: Lieberman’s face, on top of the previous thread, looks positively excruciatingly miserable- and in that republican “upset” primary race in PA (that fahrender pointed out earlier today) a 21 year old kid beat a multiple-term incumbant. If they can do it….
pete #27
Well, except for that trillion dollar booboo in Iraq and a few thousand Americans dead, maybe Old Joe has done some good somewhere sometime for someone. Anything is possible.
Sorry, EPU’d while on phone:
zennurse and Rayne,
Glad you brought up Jim Marcinkowski for MI 8th. Except I’m in a quandry about this guy, and the 8th is my district here. Ex-Republican recently decided to run as a Dem against Rogers (who he assumed he couldn’t beat perhaps?). Need I say more? He’s scrubbed all references from his site about his Republican background that I saw back in Jan when he had an ad running on here and all the liberal blogs. I’ve been wanting to research him more or see if anyone here knows more about him. Rogers has got to go but I worry we’re being set up, if either wins the Repubs still have a guy in the 8th that controls our capitol area district, yes?
Hugh #29:
Don’t feel bad. I liked it a lot, but I haven’t been able to get into FDL for much of the day.
And if it makes you feel better still, night before last I linked to the same Pat Lang post that zennurse just did. Nobody gave a rip then, either. Too bad, they’re missing out on not only some glaring insight into Dumbsfaild’s dysfunction but also on some Pulitzer-quality writing by Joe Galloway - in an e-mail exchange, no less!
Note to Zen: You’re a PL fan, too? IMO, he’s the FDL of milstuff these days.
everything-
Do you think there’s a signing statement on that law?
I don’t.
zen
Thanks Jane…I’ll report if I can use my cellphone to call in. I’m gonna be busy as hell with the video, and I won’t have much time to find a computer to blog on. Send me a number and I’ll call in.
And here’s more of Joe’s treachery:
“…So, here is the scuttlebut I am hearing…
Lieberman is getting DTCs (Democratic Town Committees) to call emergency meetings this evening to adopt resolutions for bloc-voting tomorrow night. Follow up if and where you can, and feel free to run with the story…”
Joe is trying to force every DTC chairman to coerce all their members to vote for Joe alone.
And I’m going to be interviewing delegates tomorrow to see if Holy Joe’s goon squad has been strong-arming them.
Joe is hearing footsteps behind him…
In politics perpception matters most of all. In this respect I think it is important that Lamont does get the 15% at the convention. I can recall reading some impartial, or even friendly to Lamont, Connecticut columnists in April who thought then it was likely that Lamont would get the 15%. A failure to get the 15% would be hyped by the Lieberman backers, and bought by the MSM, as a setback for Lamont. On the other hand, Lamont getting 15% should be rightly interpreted as a setback for Lieberman. Politics is like baseball: in most contests the winner can be distinguished from the loser.
Just tried to get to the Lamont site to read some more news reports, to see if there were any straw polls of delegates so far. The site was not responding, either down or overloaded.
I worry that Holy Joe is going to get a big boost from the traditional Jewish groups. They bring a lot of political and financial muscle, and I expect they are pretty solidly pro-Lieberman. Could be tough for Lamont to crack that nut…
zennurse-Provided it promotes tax breaks for the rich.
cajun (38), I don’t know if that’s the case. Traditional is a tricky word. Perhaps you mean Orthodox. And orthodox isn’t necessarily a sure vote for Joe either. Orthodox communities to my mind are really to insular for any influence.
Sean Smith almost sounds to arrogant to be competent.
zennurse-You’re right, the strong, decisive leader wouldn’t require a signing statement unless the bill didn’t favor tax relief for the rich.
Thread Theorist, at one point I thought Lamont was likely more than 15%. So what happened?National “agenda” and moneybags, perhaps?
Shez, have you considered that the Plamegate situation has caused him to switch? His testimony in the Senate was damning, at least to me. I think I will write a note to either his site or to Larry and ask. Larry is cryptic, but he does return emails.
Thanks for the heads up
MARVIN GAYE (sorta) - “Let’s Get Lamont”
We’ve been really tryin’ , maybe
Tryin’ to hold back these feelings for so long
And if you feel, like we feel, maybe
Come on, oh come on,

Let’s get Lamont
Let’s get Lamont
We’re all sensitive people
With so much ($) to give, understand me, sure
Since we got to be
Let’s say, we support you
There’s nothin wrong with us
Votin’ for you
And givin’ yourself to us can never be wrong
If the vote is true
Let’s get Lamont…
GET HEAD ITH ED?
I like it.
bob adams- a question for joe, if there is an appropriate moment - what do you have to say to the thousands of democrats, in this state and across the country, who look at your record and actions, and see a traitor?
Guys, check out LamontBlog if the official server is down: http://lamontblog.blogspot.com/
Apparently Joe’s having an emergency meeting. Hope he screws up. He thinks he owns his seat.
Apparently, Joe’s trying to browbeat. As a woman, I am so disgusted that this male creature thinks he can chuck us women to the side during the Alito filibuster, and do it again and again, and then force his way out of a primary.
BTW. I like men. I am generally not a male basher, except in extreme cases like Lieberman.
al-Scooter #34
Thanks for directing me to the Joe Galloway/Dirita exchange. It pits reality against dogma and underscores the chasm between the two.
Send emails to Harry Reid and Hillary Clinton regarding Lieberman’s refusal to say he’ll back the winner of the Democratic primary and rule out a run as an Independent.
brkily - I doubt I’ll see Joe for more than a millisecond tomorrow…he’s got to be home by sunset to practice his religion, and his handlers will put up a wall of humanity to keep anyone from asking His Excellency any embarrassing questions.
But if I get the chance, I’ll ask…
2 things- (some help needed)
1) Couldn’t get the Lamont commercials to run properly last eve. I emailed to the Lamont site- and I got 2 emails back!! One saying we’ll have a tech person look into it, and the other from the tech person with several suggestions. All I can say is WOW! I wasn’t even expecting a reply. just wanted to give them a “heads up”. I am very impressed by this individual attention. (course I did mention FDL ;) and link last eve’s post).
2) I am trying to resolve the problem. One thing is clear- that I should get an updated version of Firefox. Have 1.0.5. I didn’t download the first update after that bec. there were some problems with it. So, for FF users- what is the latest one to download that does NOT HAVE any GLitCHes? Thx in advance.
we’ll get there through Ned
New thread
VG. I have a version of Firefox that has a reload problem. I think it I is the latest version. Gotta check.
I mean refresh.
The commercials are great. Sean Smith is a fuddy-duddy.
Bob Adams. I can write, but would be even better if Hillary’s *constituents* would write to her.
firefox 1.5.0.3 is the latest and greatest Firefox for Win
zennurse, yes, with Marcinkowski being ex-CIA I can see where he’s coming from there on Plamegate, which is something we here naturally feel all Americans should be pissed about. I’m just very concerned about his long time Republican background, does he give up that ingrained ideology easily? Can’t find anything about how he feels about womens rights (hate to hazzard a guess) or our progressive issues, and at this point do any Repubs ever tell the truth? I also don’t dismiss my intuition very often and so I’ve been bothered ever since I saw all that on his site, and then more when it ‘got disappeared’. Why is it being hidden now from the general public if he wasn’t bothered revealing it openly at first? It’s a conundrum for me that I need more answers to and would appreciate any input anyone can find out about him.
Ron Zuber (#23):
can specter hear the clanking? no cracks in that brass…….
Valley Girl and others-
The Lamont ads are also up at YouTube, and you should have no problem viewing them there:
“Changing Minds” (30 sec.)
“Underdog” (30 sec.)
“Right Now” (60 sec.)
zennurse 26 — thanks, I was just thinking the same thing
pete 27 — I think we should indeed start doing that. Let’s see how things work out tomorrow.
Shez, I found a couple of interesting bios of
Marcinkowski. He did some stuff about domestic abuse.
http://www.dkosopedia.com/wiki/Jim_Marcinkowski
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Marcinkowski
what i don’t get is why the “party establishment” would still be coming out against a guy like lamont. isn’t the new democratic party, under the tutelage of howard dean, supposed to support candidates like lamont?
# 17 - Ron Russell - Thanks for the promising tip. Am on a learning curve w/ my new little Mac & generally tech clueless.
# 29 - Hugh - Bulls Eye FOTFL! Would make a great Op Ed in our daily Monterey County Herald. Their opinion page Editor (Royal Calkins) may well have the wit to reprint.
From the nitpicker patrol - it’s “hemorrhage”. And as a reference for future items re Lieberman - it’s “hemorrhoid”.
I want to see Joe tossed, and if Ned’s the guy, fine. BUT, his latest ads are amateurish and silly, not in a way that will cause someone to switch their vote for U.S. SENATOR! He needs to be taken seriously. Take a look at Sheldon Whitehouse’s new ad…now whom would you vote for???
On a much smaller note, I think the joke you’re trying to reference is RICO Suave, not Enrique, but maybe I’m missing something.
Mr. Joseph has been one of the “name” democrats who grew up always wanting to be a republican. He thinks that everyone wants to be a republican. Behind the right wing think tanks, behind the neocon’s arguments, and behind the cynical manipulation of voters superstitions, prejudices and fears is a destabilizing, grossly unfair, and underhanded game plan that is weakening our nation.
One thing that stands out from the conformity and narrowness of vision are the vast number of fallacies necessary to support their mountain of crap. If the administration did not have the habit of being deceitful there would not be any statements issued from it worth quoting. This is how the fantastically inept handle serious world issues. It is like a day care center in the White House and someone is letting the “kids” play with matches.
