Senate Democrats may have done a dirty incumbency-protection deal to support Joe Lieberman and his constant efforts to trash the Democratic Party, but Ned Lamont is well on his way to making state history and forcing a primary:
Regardless of whether U.S. Senate candidate Edward "Ned" Lamont attracts significant delegate support this weekend, the Greenwich cable executive could become the first in state history to force a statewide primary in a new way.
Lamont’s campaign manager, Thomas Swan, said the organization already has secured more than half the 13,061 signatures from Connecticut Democrats it needs to force an Aug. 8 showdown with U.S. Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman under the direct primary statute.
Connecticut always has allowed candidates to petition onto the November ballot if they represent minor parties or are running without affiliation.
Major party candidates gained a spot on the ballot by winning a delegate convention. Those who lost the convention but secured at least 15 percent of the delegates have the option of forcing a primary. But in 2004, the General Assembly enacted a statute allowing Democrats and Republicans to force primaries for state or federal offices – including statewide races – by securing enough signatures from party members.
For the last two weeks, more than 500 Lamont campaign volunteers statewide have been going door to door, Swan said.
"It’s an extremely time-consuming effort," he said, adding that "a significant portion of our campaign’s first three months of existence was spent building their field army."
The mark the Lamont campaign is hoping to reach represents 2 percent of all Democrats statewide. Those signatures must be secured by June 5, two weeks after the Democratic State Convention ends on Saturday.
Ned’s got new campaign commercials on the air that you can see here. If you’re a Connecticutian with a gift for collecting signatures you can volunteer here, or you can donate here.
Ned also got Lowell Weicker’s endorsement this morning. I find it oddly appropriate that the "White Knight of Watergate" is coming out in support of Ned and willing to go to great lengths to get Lieberman off the stage right now even as the Senate Democrats roll over. That’s the incumbency protection racket in action, I suppose.

Next time, TRex! vrooooooom.
Sometimes I feel hopeless about the state of our country.
Donate to Ned. It helps.
Ned is the man,if there is a better way to show the Dem establishment that we mean buisness AND ARE STRONG ENOUGH TO MAKE A DIFFERANCE I’ve yet to see it.More so now that they’ve backed Leiberdick.
Drat! My limited edition masterpiece … EPU’d!
;>)
Maybe with Ned Lamont’s entry into the Senate, active Democrats (rather than benchwarming timeservers) can shake things up and get some life into the party. Certainly I have to admit being unimpressed with most of our Senators and Representatives these days. Too many safe seats.
Go Ned you da man!
Nedheads?
Reurn of the Nedi?
Ned, white, and blue?
InterNeds?
hmm, this is a tough room….
I wonder how Schumer et al feel about Bernie Sanders. He’s an independant, socialist if you like, who is running unopposed by the Dems for Jeffords’ seat in VT. Obama’s been here campaging for him, so has Fiengold. Why trash Lamont, who is working inside the party, and then support Sanders, who’s clearly not in the party?
I love the admission of the incumbency protection racket. It’s time to clean everyone out of congress & start over .
two beers — I’m gonna use Ned, white and blue for a post title some time. That’s a good one.
its supposed to be 99F tomorrow in Las Vegas …

I’ve chipped in my share of do-re-me. Wish I was a Conn Dem so I could sign up for his primary challenge as well….
Is it not possible for Ned to get 15% at the Conn. con. delgates?

Yay Ned. The ads are great, Markos is so bubbly.
darkblack, you just keep getting snarkier and snarkier.
thundershowers nothing – there was mighty hail coming down as I ran for my bus which of course broke down … finally home and of course, EPUd – cbl – from what we’re working on, I think you’ll have a lot of options for keeping up with YKOS! Along with a hotel full of bloggers (yeah! we sold out the Riv! – but there are other closeby options!) we have Air America broadcasting Majority Report Thurs and Fri and PoliticsTV doing video blogging and a few more tricks up our sleeves – I’ll let everone know as soon as we nail down more choices.

darkblack – the way the faces fit into the under miners cartoon bodies is perfect, jowels and all. Rove in particular.
If Rove is indicted before the Plame Panel, I hope there is plenty of framing of conversation around Bush and Cheney as co-conspirators. Waas’ inclusion just ads more wattage to an event that stands to broaden public discourse and awareness.
random aside – Tyson told me he had a blast in every respect doing the Colbert show last evening. I think it will be the early run tonight.
FDL !
Lamont, an actual principled, straight shooting Democrat. Lieberman, a DLC, bluest of blue-dog Democrats. For Connecticut voters a REAL choice. How I envy them! A Lamont victory. Now that would be the most exciting thing since ‘George the first’ lost out to the big doggie.
Chavez has Bush’s number. He cites a DC propgated “talking points strategy” to damage his credibility.

“For that reason, he attributed his international infamy to a “Goebbels-like strategy” created by Washington: “They have distributed talking points throughout the world, so that people repeat that I am an imperialist and a terrorist … how absurd!” he complained.”

Had a peak at the ads it says are starting to air today. TV off here, so I can’t say I’ve seen OTA. But clicking the Quicktime version (I already like the man…) they’re both good. The barking dog is priceless. Is this the ads by same guy that worked to get Jesse the Body elected in Minn? If so, you will see Ned gain more and faster. Good intros.
Still, one question: after scouring his site for his stand on ‘net neutrality’ (referred by a google search) the closest I see is that he started a Co. 20 yrs ago to compete w/cable conglomerates. (One assumes this competition succeeded to create some wealth.) I’m not trying to besmirch the man, I just wish I could find a clear statement. Seems not listed in with the other issues he addresses. Anyone have any idea about his views?

How I would like to see that mediocre homeland security tinkerer off the political stage. It is an aberration in dem party history that he was selected to run for the dem vice president position….Gore has a lot to live down for that one. It will be a blow to AIPAC, a greater blow to Israel (same thing), losing their champion, second only to Bush, when he loses the primary.

Thanks for the questions about my fair area. We had a lovely sunny day today and we did a bit of cleanup here at home (just the garden, we live downtown and had no real damage, just a little weeping into the basement and rearranging of new plantings). Route One opened southbound only after 3 days of being entirely closed (major commuter to Boston Route from the North Shore). I think things are better in Peabody/Salem, but up in Methuen they are still watching a dam and there’s a bridge in Amesbury they’re worried about. The volume of water has damaged many homes and there are huge amounts of sewage pouring into the Merrimack river. Another worry is that this will worsen the red tide that began late last week up in Maine; the foul water will surely make it more likely to be severe and lengthy. Our shellfisherman lost 51million dollars last year because of a long red tide, so this could be a real disaster. Romney wrote the Chimp today to give us Disaster status, which I’m sure will happen.
Thanks again.
I wrote about Flannery’s book on my blog:
http://santafeandthefatcityhorns.blogspot.com/
Excerpt:
“In 1961 there was still room to maneuver. In that seemingly distant age there were just 3 billion people, and they were using just half of the total resources that our global ecosystem could sustainably provide. A short twenty-five years later, in 1986, we had reached a watershed, for that year our population topped 5 billion, and such was our collective thirst for resources that we were using all of Earth’s sustainable production.
In effect, 1986 marks the year that humans reached Earth’s carrying capacity, and ever since we have been running the environmental equivalent of a deficit budget, which is sustained only by plundering our capital base. The plundering takes the form of overexploiting fisheries, overgrazing pasture until it becomes desert, destroying forests, and polluting our oceans and atmosphere, which in turn leads to the large number of environmental issues we face…
…By 2001 humanity’s deficit had ballooned to 20 percent, and our population to over 6 billion. By 2050 when the population is expected to level out at around 9 billion, the burden of human existence will be such that we will be using—it they can still be found – nearly two planets’ worth of resources. But for all the difficulty we’ll experience in finding those resources, it’s our waste – particularly the greenhouse gases – that is the limiting factor.†(pp 78-79)

Everyone should read this book.
Uber gooper pollster Scottie Rasmussen is havin trouble with some of his own numbers.
Yesterday he had to explain a decline in the PINO’s poll numbers- he said that that was because most of the data was collected before the PINO’s excellent immigration speech.
Today he had to explain why the numbers SINCE the excellent immigration speech are actually lower- then THIS- goopers are losing ground in his own generic ballot question:
“May 17, 2006–Following the President’s Monday night speech, Democrats enjoy a 15-point advantage on the Generic Congressional Ballot. A Rasmussen Reports national opinion survey of 1,000 Likely Voters found that 48% would vote for the Democrat in their district if the election were held today. Just 33% would vote for the Republican.
Just 58% of conservatives say they would vote for the Republican candidate.
Two weeks ago, the Democrats had a ten-point advantage, 46% to 36%.

Thanks, Jane, for this post about him – he’s such a great candidate – and will be a wonderful addition to the Senate!
rwcole,
I watch Rassmussen as well and he has stopped reporting when Bush’s fave numbrs reach new lows. He reports the number, but no longer adds,”ths is eqaul to the lowest favorabilty rating yet recorded.” He used to do that in due course. Now, nada. Meanwhile, I don’t remember him taking a mother’s day polling holiday last year. I thought it was, well, suspicious….
angie, mountains can go — look what happened to the old man!

I try to “triangulate” when evaluating alarmist assertions. And, I trained in forensic environmental science (radioanalytical chemistry), so I don’t alarm easily. But this book has SUCH a ring of depressing truth, in total context. I am frightened for the future of my kids, nephews, nieces, my grandson (and all of y’alls). We are on the cusp of planetary disaster.
Maybe in the Big Picture it doesn’t matter. Maybe just sad if we allow our own extinction, so that Bush’s cronies and their ilk can live out THEIR lives in insular transient comfort. Dunno.
out in public, it’s always polite to make chitchat about the weather. I can usually manage to work in a snark about the odd weather recently and how Bush doesnt seem to want to do anything about global warming. I’ve never had anybody disagree since Katrina…
Imman- yeah pretty funny. Bein a gooper pollster right now is a lot like being a fisherman who hates fish- keeps hopin he won’t catch any.
In Scottie’s case- he may be crazy as well.
Got a couple of good links on grassroots organizing, both are good reads, one will make you mad, one will make you smile.

Jane — NOW endorses yesterday; Weiker today. Someone knows what they’re doing.
zennurse 56: California will be watching closely to see if Bush declares a fed emergency for MA flooding, allowing them to tap federal funding. A month ago, Bush was in Sacramento to tout alternative energy, but Ahnold Governator and the Dem legislators were pleading for Bush to declare the Sac Delta area a federal disaster/emergency, to get federal funds for upgrading the levees — there had been massive rains and lots of the levees are in disrepair, so tens of thousands are at risk for the next flood. Bush said “no,” and all the headliness the next day said less about Bush’s alternative fuels photo op and a lot about Bush telling California to go flood itself.
Thanks Bobbybabe!
jinny, nothing yet. Others have asked.
Jane, are you around????? This is the third request, is there a way to do this?
48 hours until the convention. Friday night is when they’ll select the candidate for Senator. I’m guessing that they’ll poll all the town’s delegations (169 towns I think, about 1600 delegates) after the 6PM start time. I’m guessing we’ll know if Ned gets his 15% by around 10PM.
I’m still working on a way to blog from the convention, but I’d prefer to donate the $150 wifi access fee to Lamont and phone it in, I think. If I can borrow somebody’s PC for a minute or two, I’ll try to post something here while I’m there. But I’m going to be videotaping all night, so I don’t know if I’ll get the chance.
It’s getting close now!
A friend in CT got a call last night from Chris Murphy, running against Republican Nancy Johnson in CT-05: He wasn’t calling to inquire about my health, but before he could get a word in edgewise, I asked him point-blank–”Where do you stand on Lamont/Lieberman?”
As good an opener as any I’ve heard.
The PINO (president in name only) responds:
“If ya start givin money to states fer havin disasters, yer ENCOURAGING disasters- and pretty soon yer gonna be having em all over the place- that’s not gonna happen on MY watch”.
The path to winning back our country goes through progressives like Ned Lamont who can run against their own parties, and in other races, through third-party candidates. If Gore could run as a third-party candidate for President right now, he would win.
zennurse, Muzzy, moi, cbl, Leslie in CA, Cujo359, and any and all unindicted co-conspirators …Thanks.

Murtha: Marines killed civilians “in cold blood”
Senior House Democrat Jack Murtha warns that the details of a reported massacre in Iraq last year will prove “a very, very bad thing” for the U.S.
By Michael Scherer and Mark Benjamin
May. 18, 2006 | A senior House Democrat with close ties to the military claimed Wednesday that U.S. Marines wantonly killed innocent Iraqi civilians, including women and children, in an early morning raid last November, buttressing a March report by Time.
“Our troops overreacted because of the pressure on them, and they killed innocent civilians in cold blood,” said Jack Murtha of Pennsylvania, a decorated Marine Corps veteran who served in Vietnam and is among the most influential Democratic voices on military matters. “This is going to be a very, very bad thing for the United States.”

Lowell Weicker’s endorsement is great. I think he always must have had a hard time being a member of any of those two incumbency clubs. His independence strikes a nice note with many CT people though. Tracing my sketchy memory back: to listen to certain Republicans talk, you’d think Lowell Weicker turned the state of CT into a communist state and left bottles of alcohol all over the front lawn to boot during his tenure as governer.
Well, I’ve had truthout bookmarked for over 4 years and I just removed it. Will Pitt and Marc Ash have lost their credibility thanks to this Leopold debacle, IMHO.
If we get word of a Rove indictment tomorrow, I’ll feel better about this, but something has got to give this week. Maybe Fitz will surprise us all and whack Cheney…..hey, it could happen.

What a disaster. The US has been so immune to any of the tragedy visited upon the Iraqi people, it is indeed criminal. As long as nothing happens in America, everything is OK. It is sick to see a nation so cravenly selfish.
Marines explain that killin Iraqis is like eatin potato chips- once ya start- ya just can’t stop.
*ilson- i heard Murtha speaking of this on Tweety and cried– for the victims, the soldiers, and us.
Maybe there is a small chance we can make reparations in Afghanistan, Iraq and right here at home!
About Ned and Net Neutrality:
After MORE scouring the various links etc, finally settled on email to media contact; referencing FDL reader wants to know…here’s the text. The site is familiar w/FDL and our support, so I thought it would be OK to use Jane/Christy/Pach to reply. Here’s what I sent:

Subject: Hi. A Firedoglake reader wants to know…
Hi. I like the ads you folks are starting with. Please take out Leiberman. Although folks are very supportive, as you already know, one FDL person is curious, given Mr. Lamont’s involvement w/cable industry, does he have a position on the currently making its way thru the Congressional maze piece of legislation popularly known as ‘Net Neutrality’?
I can’t find reference anywhere on the candidate’s site. If you could either reply to this mail direct, or shoot something to Jane/Christy/Pach, I’m sure the blog community would appreciate it.

Murtha was on Tweety’s tonight and Tweety kept hammering him about why some leading Democrats weren’t backing him. Tweety seemed oblivious of Bush, Cheney, Frist and Hastert really really opossing Murtha. Rumsfeld is Secy of Defense, not Hillary Clinton!
Kludge, I never realized your real name is xxxxx.
Mine is T.Urban.
Pathetic we need to be so worried about being rounded up in the middle of the night. (In my case I’d just get audited, again. Four times in 10 years, sigh.)
Murtha was on fire tonight. I know he’s always been a hawk but I just trust that man more than almost anybody else in Washington, he sounds determined to stop this war even if he has to do it himself. Tweety wouldn’t let the fucking “but Hillary supports the war” line go. It was really frustrating to watch, but Murtha handled it well, he always exudes so much authority and confidence in his position. Tweety was chastised.
On the breakfast: just to let everyone know, we were reserving 100 spots at breakfast for now and holding 25 until Vegas. We’ve had some 80 reservations today alone. We may have to close reservations off at some point just to be able to handle it, so I’m putting this in the comments (instead of the front page) to let regulars know first. If you want to make sure you get in, now is probably better than later.
Tweety always wilts around “real” men.
Fortunatel, Tweety has never changed one mind in america- not even his own. The only people who watch such shows are so engrossed in their own political points of view that they don’t even listen to the opposition.
Of course the Bush Cheney plan calls for these poor troops to get thrown back into public life without any treatment for PTSD…..
Old Crummy Rummy says the troops are getting well “seasoned”. Others would call it getting burnt out.
What say Deadeye Dick and Dirty Delay? Let the “other people” fight.

In case you missed it earlier, Tom Friedman had a devastating column against Bush’s incompepence and cronyisms in today’s NYT — unfortunately, it’s behind the wall. The opening is that he doesn’t believe the poll showing Bush at 29% JAR — how could 29% still support this man, he wonders?
And how could Lieberman?
VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) — The Rev. Pat Robertson says God has told him that storms and possibly a tsunami will hit America’s coastline this year.
The founder of the Christian Broadcasting Network has told viewers of “The 700 Club” that the revelations came to him during his annual personal prayer retreat in January.
“If I heard the Lord right about 2006, the coasts of America will be lashed by storms,” Robertson said May 8.
_____
LMAO!
Anyone with an IQ not starting with a fucking DECIMAL POINT could reliably predict that “the coasts of America will be lashed by storms.”
This is right up there with the fortune teller touting “predict the sex of your unborn baby, or your money back!”
After a particularly large meal with wine, God told me that President Xerxes will lash the waves.
Blessings to John Murtha.
How great would it be if the deaf, dumb and blind Dem congressfolk would appear on the floor and get behind Murtha in a big, loud way, filibustering whatever is going on by reading the Constitution and the Bill of Rights along with long quotes from speeches by Paine and Jefferson until it is agreed to end the wars. They could run around rubber-stamping the Rethugs on the forehead and then hold a press conference announcing their individual contributions to the 50 state strategy and Progressive Patriots fund as well as their support for Russ’ censure resolution, carrying him off on their shoulders.
I’d like that a lot.

“Rumsfeld is Secy of Defense, not Hillary Clinton!”. Quite true. But I can’t figure out why La Hil won’t admit the Iraq invasion was a mistake. If she would do that, and a few other things I could support her for president con brio. As it is, if she doesn’t change her tune, there’s no way I’ll give her my vote or any money.
Ooohhh, jinny what a provocative comment: “a certain gentleman”.. was it a pol? a celeb? a pundit? or a troll?
fascinating.
immanentize (#49):
yeah, that kind of stoooo. pid. “thinking” was a huge factor in almost everything shitty that’s happened the past 6 years. what that naderite never stopped to consider was how different gore was from bush. jomentum, not. gore, it’s absurd to think “no difference” from bush. even in 2000 the contrast was completely obvious. one can only hope that guy has seen what a mistake he made. i say this and i’m a feingold supporter. that said, i will support gore in 2008, if he’s nominated, wholeheartedly.
BobbyG — now that is funny. I’m gonna use that, too.
Robertson is just playing the odds – if he’s wrong, who cares – if he’s right, he says he has a direct link to God.

BTW, on my Zogby poll, it was asking about 08 candidates and it mentioned Tom Vilsak. Feingold was there, Bayh, Clark, Hil, Biden, Warner, Edwards, Richardson and Kerry. No Gore, most disappointing. I don’t know a thing about Vilsak. Going to google, but what do others know?

I know those poll numbers about dems being ahead of bush when asked who they would vote for — but I gotta tell you, most of the poll numbers only add up to about 85% decided. Rove is aiming to ‘wedge’ those others into abject fear and make them vote republican.
That is where the battle lies. And those undecided cannot be won by sitting watching the other guy bail water into his boat.

BobbyG and friends – you might want to check out the latest novels by Kim Stanley Robinson – he’s moved from his astonishing Mars trilogy (which I reread at least once a year to keep me on track) to considering how we deal with global warming. Here’s what he said to the Guardian recently:
“I think the US is in a terrible state of denial,” he says firmly. “Worse than that, we seem to be caught in a kind of Gotterdammerung response: we’d rather have the world go down in flames than change our lifestyle or admit we’re wrong. Even here in California, 50% of cars on the freeway are SUVs, and they’re political statements: they say, we’re going to take the rest of the world down with us because we don’t give a damn. Essentially they’re Republican vehicles: when you see an SUV go by, you know the driver voted for Bush. I do think the world has larger global warming problems, but if the US were actually engaged in dealing with them, there’d be a sense that the worst abuser had seen the light and the whole world was on the same page. There’s a really sizeable minority here who back measures to reduce emissions, but the political process is controlled by the Republican administration, which is basically in thrall to the oil industry. So it’ll come down to another election – and with the last two elections both in their different ways perhaps having been stolen, we can’t even really count on democracy anymore. It’s pretty scary here.”

Man these televangelists really just sell their ignorance. (an object lesson on the cult of personality surrounding Bush)
Prophecy in the biblical sense, for anyone with the exegetical chops to know their stuff, is NEVER EVER about, on such and such at date, at such and such a time, or within THIS timeframe, such and such will happen.
Prophecy is always a causal warning, if people don’t stop abc, then xyx will happen. And its always a message of hope. That if people do stop abc, then xyz, won’t happen and good things will follow.
Jesus said in pretty clear terms, “No one knows the day or the hour.” and “Sufficient for the day are the trouble’s therein.”
The tendency of people to latch onto specific time frame prophecy is a reflection of
a) their ignorance of a real spiritual understanding of prophecy, and what it actually is.
b) a reflection of their mean-spirited egotism, expecting ‘judgement’ to occur in a timeframe suitable to them, thereby justifying their own lives.
Blah, these televangelists are just ‘profiting’ (pun intended) from the marketability of the capacity of factor a) and b) in human ignorance and the demand for both forms of ignorant self-aggrandizement.

Check out this newstory on Voice of America on the impending defeat of Democratic opposition in the midterm elections, and how Democrats running for Congress must read the “warning signs” for them in the polls (about how Americans mistrust them, etc etc). I guess he’s paying off reporters with our tax dollars again (or, since these reporters are employees of the unitary executive, maybe they can be just ordered to make sutff up).
“President Bush said Republicans are a party of optimism, and that under Republican leadership freedom is expanding across the globe, including in Iraq. “Free countries will lay the foundation of peace for our children and grandchildren. The enemy cannot defeat us in Iraq, and they cannot defeat us anywhere else in the world. The only way we can be defeated is if we lose our nerve, and the Republican Party will not lose its nerve,” he said.”

Hello Firepups,
My wife has to attend the ADA (American Diabetes Association) conference the very…same…weekend. It’s not a problem, really, it just means I have to leave our two-year old locked in the bedroom with some powdered milk and a jar of peanut butter; he’ll be fine for a couple days. {sigh} I was really hoping to be able to go and meet many of you in (ouch, this part hurts more than I thought it would) LAS VEGAS.
Maybe it’s not such a dirty deal Harry Reid made (if it’s true). If he got Lieberman to promise not to run as an independent in exchange for an endorsement, then that pledge (not to run as an independent) is worth a lot more than Reid’s endorsement costs. If Lamont can win the primary, and Lieberman accepts the defeat, then chances are excellent that we’ll see Senator Lamont.

BREAKING NEWS: 100 voting machines broken
More than 100 voting machines are reported to be broken across the city, the Daily News has learned.
Apparently, the machines were broken when polls opened this morning — they keep spitting out the paper tape that keeps the tally of the vote. It is the largest breakdown since we started using the new voting machines.
The broken machines were first reported in the weblog for TheNextMayor.com. Expect more on this story in tomorrow’s Daily News.

^^^ HELP IMPEACH TODAY
Keep the pressure on Congress… Talking about impeachment wakes people up… They question, it’s a strong motivator to get people thinking. It also lets Congress know how intense the dissapproval is for this President… They seem to be a little slow on the uptake. So please:
1) Sign petitions if you have not done so
2) Send a letter to Congress (both Senators & House rep)
3) Send a copy to the media
4) Enlist friends and family to help, ask them to chip in time
5) Spread the link around, email it (with a request to forward) post it on a blog, or in the comments of a news story.
Help out!!!
Thanks :)

No doubt true (on the Dems not being an effective opposition), but look at the unattributed polling results (could be from last week or 5 years ago).
I agree with you, at this point we’re at the level of pure authoritarian propaganda (directly from the unitary executive and, indirectly, via pressure from that same White House, on the establishment media). They’ve already shown over and over again, that they’re not at all averse to just making up polls, stats, quotes or facts.. whatever it takes to delude the American public (and presumably themselves). Only problem is, they’re shite at it, and nobody believes them anymore (well, maybe 29% of the populaton does). I’m so sick of these people. They’ve turned my country into Honecker’s East Germany plus a cheap neon crucifix.
