The WaPo/ABC poll is out — and President Bush is down again. But there is a whole lot beyond just the one poll number to read in this set of polling, and, mercifully, Bob Geiger has done some number crunching and chart-making so I don’t have to do so myself.
The bottom line: Democrats are looking strong in every polling category on the issues, and Republicans are sinking with a George Bush stone tied around their necks.
Yeeeowch.
Holden has even more about the lastest in polling trends at First Draft. At least the President can still say that Katherine Harris is willing to sit behind him in camera range at announcements and scratch and stuff. (What was that about? Maybe they had a gnat infestation at the GOP tax plan announcement or something?!?)

FITZ !!
Just been crusing some of the right wing blogs. They hate Bush too. So, now it looks as if the left and the right have a common enema, huh?
please oh powerful pony delivery vehicle do not have mr. rove perp (pimp?) walk this week, as it will be a direct pain for my family.
how is it possible, that the very thing that i would like to see most (karl, please turn forward now, thanks, now sideways, that’s great, but could you look a little less…evil? even for mugshots you are frightening) could actually hurt my family, you ask? well, its complicated, and in its own way frivolous, and best of all i can’t talk about it, but suffice it to say i’ll know the second that guy gets busted, and i’m hoping it can wait until monday.
Slow down — the news ain’t that good.
Ever notice how most everybody hates Congress, except for their own Congressperson? Indeed, notice at this WaPo graphic that while 69% think the US is going in the wrong direction, only 52% think that their state is going in the wrong direction. (I’m sure even fewer think that their particular Rep is doing a bad job). The point is that such great numbers for the Dems do not translate to big pick-ups in the House and Senate.
I can’t believe

The most bloodthirsty of the Republinuts are now calling for impeachment. This pisses me off immensely, because we’re clearly on record as having first dibs on impeachment! I don’t even want to contemplate the possibility that I’m gonna be drinking champagne on the same night, and for the same reason, as is Michelle Malkin. That would be an especially cruel karmic outcome. And I’ve been good, really I have (well, you know – for me anyway).
Bifurcated impeachment parties – yeah, that’s the answer!
You know, I think Bush’s best strategy right now is to just pretend that there is no war in Iraq. I wouldn’t be surprised if he tried to make the issue go away by simply not talking about it anymore. That strategy worked pretty well with Osama bin what’s-his-name. Does the American public even realize that he’s still out there?

Sholom @6, the news ain’t that bad, either.
The core strength of the GOP has fractured, which is good news.
Problem is, when push comes to shove, they’ll grumble and vote GOP ’cause there ain’t a snowball’s chance they’ll ever vote Dem, which would be bad news.
The silver lining is if they’re pissed at the Lords of the Lies, they *might* not campaign and vote, which would be back to good news. Including pissed-off religious wingers—in fact, especially those guys—who’ve been a major strength in the recent elctorial past.
And, if I may yammer on here, pissed off wingers are likely to say nasty things to the polls, bringing the Chimp’s polling numbers down to (dare we dream?) the low 20’s…
If AT&T has nothing to hide, why can’t we see the papers?

What happened to the bigger, better, new-and-improved war strategy? Couple of weeks ago Iran held the mushroom cloud and was smoking it, or something. Now, we got nothing. Is it possible that the rest of the world called Bush and told him to knock it off?

Sholom #6 Y Pseud. nc #18:
That’s why the Dem House candidates must get off their pablum platforms and campaign on the rubber stamp issue:
- All Republicans in the Senate and the House roll over and play dead for Bush-Cheney.
- Therefore the only vote Congress persons and Senators will make in the upcoming Congress that will make a difference will be how he or she votes in early January to decide which party will organize the House and Senate.
- No matter how nice a guy or girl an incumbent or challenger is that you vote for, if he or she is a Republican and you are voting for a Congress that will continue to rubber stamp whatever Bush-Cheney does.
The Dems have got to pin the party label in all its slime and mendacity on every Republican candidate.

Consumer Price Report Shows Signs of Inflation
By Nell Henderson
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, May 17, 2006; 1:12 PM
Inflation picked up in April as consumers paid higher prices for gasoline, housing, clothing, medical care and other items, the government reported today.
The Labor Department said its consumer price index, a widely followed inflation gauge, rose 0.6 percent last month, the biggest increase in three months, largely reflecting a 3.9 percent jump in energy prices.

Keep the pressure on Congress… Talking about impeachment wakes people up… They question, it’s a strong motivator to get people thinking. It also lets Congress know how intense the dissapproval is for this President… They seem to be a little slow on the uptake. So please:
1) Sign petitions if you have not done so
2) Send a letter to Congress (both Senators & House rep)
3) Send a copy to the media
4) Enlist friends and family to help, ask them to chip in time
5) Spread the link around, email it (with a request to forward) post it on a blog, or in the comments of a news story.

I personally don’t think it will come today. But last time IIRC, the GJ met in the morning with the press conference announced at 11:00 for 1:00 start time. If the GJ did not meeting until 1:00 then (discounting JL story for now) they would need to hear the request for indictment then vote, then Fitz would have to present it to the judge I think, then annouce press conference. So it is not really an apples to apples comparision in the timelines. It seems to quiet for today though. I would have thought that someone in the MSM would be talking if it was coming down.
Why am I, a life-long leftie Demo, not elated with “The bottom line: Democrats are looking stronger…”? Because I fear we, (the Democrats) are going to get an unprincipled, opportunist, as the nominee for the presidency for 2008. That we may not get someone like Gore, Feingold, or many other men and women in the party, who concern themselves with ideas and what’s good for the citizenry. Instead I am afraid we will be served up a darling puppet of the DLC facing a former cardboard Republican moderate (what ever that is) who somehow got drunk with the possibility of the power of the presidency and fell off the “straight talk express”. Very depressing. And if the current front runner doesn’t change her tune from the center-right symphony to the traditional progressive song of democracy, then for the first time ever, I shall be sitting it out in ‘08. See, for me, it’s far more than just vengeance and defeating the Republican crooks, as tantalizing and delicious a thought that may be. It has everything to do with what’s ahead. And what my daughter’s life will be like, post Bush. I do not want the Democratic nominee to be a pale imitation of this president. We need our next leader to be a REAL Democrat. At heart, I suppose I’m just a tired, but true idealist who very much wants things to be better.

DOW: Looks like it was the inflation report that sunk the market today. The market was jazzed about the end of the rate rises from the Fed. Higher inflation probably means higher interest rates, which just screws the cost of money, and all those adjustable loans. And BTW the housing and commercial RE markets as well.
From Marketwatch:
“The consumer price index rose 0.6%. Excluding food and energy prices, consumer prices rose 0.3%. The increase in the CPI and the core rate were both slightly higher than forecast. Economists expected a 0.5% gain in the CPI, according to a MarketWatch survey. The core CPI was expected to rise 0.2%.”
“More important, core inflation is now at the top end of the Fed’s comfort zone. The central bank has raised short-term interest rates 16 times in a row over the past two years in a bid to choke off inflationary pressures in the economy.
“But investor hopes rose in April that the Fed may pause in its cycle of rate hikes after Chairman Ben Bernanke said, in congressional testimony, that the central bank might consider a temporary halt to allow previous rate increases to feed through into the economy, and to assess whether they were having the desired effect of slowing growth.”
“After the inflation data, the federal-funds-futures market priced in a more than 50% chance of a rate increase in June, up from a 36% chance before the data were released.”
“The CPI report comes just a day after investors cheered a producer-price report showing core wholesale inflation in check.”
—
Couple of things: the inflation rise excluded oil prices. Well, duh. I have raised my prices due to the higher cost of diesel, and so is everyone else. Also, the presumed leveling of rates was “priced into” the market, which means stock prices were assuming a condition that today’s inflation report countered. The market hates surprises.

I read today that many seniors are predicted to reach the hole in the prescription drug doughnut in the early fall. Fitz is not obligated to have a press conference. Every week evry US attorney’s Ofccie obatins a number of indictments and they jsut get a half page press release (sometiems not even that) that no one ever reads.
However, he would have to have a pretty powerful reason (which I cannot imagine based on what we currently know/believe)to skip a presser for a Rove indictment.
Under DOJ guidelines there are very few opportunites where he is permitted to comment at all on a case. Indictment presser is one of those few.
The Rovians have already announced via spinning pundits that they intend to slime him if he indicts Rover.
The only chance he has to sort of make his case to the American public prior to opening statements at trial, would be such a press conference. It’s his only shot to tell his side of the story, “in person”.
Given that he has already proven that he is his own best spokesmodel, why would he waste an opportuntiy to get accurate information out to counter the sliming to come?

This morning I checked on the iraq casualties site to find out that as of this morning there were 2450 deaths of US military in Iraq (I know this number is low as well as misleading, but that is not the point.)
The point is that on today’s front page of the Chicago Tribune they had a story – with pictures – of the fly fishing school they have in Baghdad for our military!
The people in Iraq don’t even have effing running water and electricity and the military is out fishing and having their photos taken holding their “catch” for the front page of the newspaper. I would bet my life that there isn’t a casualty count anywhere in the Tribune.
I am so angry. First I pointed this out to the gentleman who was holding the paper (I won’t but the Trib). Then, after getting to work, I sent an email to Bruce Dold the editor of the paper. I hope I’m not the only one who did.
Cujo – they are still having arguments over whether and which judgements are final, and if he can appeal yet. Canada is continuing to have hearings and dribblets are coming out there – like maybe the US used the courtesy phone and told Canada they would send him to Canada instead of Syria, if Canada would imprison him.
Canada apparently indicated that even under the funky Quebec law, they needed things like proof and a crime. Our DOJ was SHOCKED!!!!!!! at this approach.
Luckily, we had an assist from the freedom fighters in Syria who believe in human rights so strongly they are replacing old Imman based Sharia rulings with DOJ legal memoranda. They let them do way cooler stuff according to unamed sources with The Syrian Secret Police (anagrammed backwards – PSST).
If Leopold can have secret sources, so can I.
LHP–thanks. I’m also thinking he would hold a press conference, but my question (not stated clearly, ack) is: must he announce the press conference? I’m obviously desperately hoping that even though there has been no announcement he will shortly emerge and appear before the cameras….one can dream…

wondering at 102 — the last time Fitz held a presser, his office issued a press advisory about an hour beforehand (or so — I don’t remember the exact timing, but it was enough time for them to get off the courthouse lawn and into the hastily assembled room). Just fyi.
Well, polls, or not, what the heck to Dems stand for? They are stil a corporate party, no different from the Republicans. That’s why I’m an Independent (Green-thinking, but an Independent all the same). I don’t trust the Dems any more than I trust the Republicans. Dems have not and don’t take a stand on anything, they are a bunch of wusses, IMHO.
Christy Hardin Smith–thanks much. I think the question was basically magical thinking on my part. Sigh.
Pach’s YKos breakfast post has been eaten.
Mary @ 12:47 pm (#100) – I’ve been combing the CBC website for information on Arar. He’s apparently caused a bit of a stir in the Great White North by getting himself shipped to Syria and tortured. The Canadian ambassador to Syria visited Arar while he was in prison there. Arar complained about being tortured, and the ambassador didn’t believe him, because, as he said at a hearing the Canadians had on the subject, he didn’t know that Syria did such things.

They’ve also invoked their own secrecy rules about some super-secret intelligence relationship they have with Syria:
[from the Arar timeline page]
The poor man’s life appears to have been ruined by this incident, if the CBC story is any indication. It looks like what ought to be the two most liberal (in the old sense) democracies in the world failed to live up to their own principles in this matter.

politics is the art of the possible. people that don’t vote get what they deserve. i want feingold or gore. my vote will be cast regardless. if you don’t see the point in exercising your responsibilities as a citizen maybe you should take your daughter and move to canada.
We know the timing of the Libby indictments was driven, in part, by the expiration of the GJ’s term; that is apparently not an issue this time.
I have no doubt that when and if indictments are handed up, the media and the people will be informed.
I also believe that if any plea agreements were to be made, that those would also be announced.
In the Libby presser, Fitzgerald was very firm in stating what should be inferred and what should not, attempting to close off as much speculation as possible, even doinghis part to stress that the crimes for which Libby was being indicted were not inconsequential. I cannot imagine that he would indict on the QT (or make a plea agreement on the same basis) and leave the spinning up to Rove’s attorneys.
ot, but oh fuck me, just caught a snippet of harry reid reacting to the new tax cut for millionaires. is he on xanax. is it toomuch to ask these fucking people to work up a little outrage or maybe display a little energy. you can’t even get beyond what he’s saying cause you’re afraid he’s gonna fall asleep while standing at the podium.
What happened to Pach’s post?
Oh well. This just in, TO stands by it’s story. (this is from 10 minutes ago, I think.)

Mary @ 12:47 pm (#101) – Here’s a CBC story on recent criticism of Canadian immigration policy by the U.S.
http://www.cbc.ca/story/news/n…..60501.html
The Canadian response is that they see things differently. I think this is Canadian for “screw you and the horse you rode in on”, but that could be a loose translation.
CBC story on Canada’s handling of Arar case. It confirms what you wrote:

Oklahoma kiddo has a right as an American to sit out the election if he/she so chooses. I may not agree with doing that, but to say he/she should move to Canada isn’t fair. We all feel his/her frustration about the dem party.
Truthout sounds less and less credible with each statement they issue. I somehow doubt that “network superiors” have prevented reporters from reporting this story. The press speculates about this stuff ALL the time — why would their editors clam up all of a sudden? It just doesn’t add up.
I disagree with proj. MSM is in Rove’s back pocket. If he doesn’t want anything out, then nothing will get out.
Upon receiving a compliment for being upright, I once heard that guy respond, “Thanks, but you’ve never seen me cornered”.
We know the Bushites Big Lied this nation into waging war. And were the democrats to regain the House, subpeona’s would be forthcoming.
There is nothing the Bushite war criminals will hesitate to do to subvert that from happening.
The lawful cover the telecom’s have received via presidential fiat is an example. Provided a legal rationale, they’ve chosen to flat out lie about having cooperated with the NSA surveillance.
The Bushites enormous, unchallenged power to inflict massive harm is unimpaired. Certainly, the boneless wonders of the democratic party are no impediment. (I contend the depraved cowardice of those “loyal opposition” stalwarts is tantamount to treason. But I also digress).
They are not upright. There is no crime under the sun those swine are unprepared to perpetrate to retain power. None whatsoever. And because they are as stupid as they are brutal, all bets are off until November. Polls are rendered irrelevent for the duration.
I think you give Rove wwwwaaaaayyyy too much credit.
YKos: FDL Breakfast in Vegas!! post seems to be back up
new thread – breakfast?
I think you are waaaayyyyy too naive.
I somehow doubt that “network superiors” have prevented reporters from reporting this story.
You’re kidding, right? My opinions about TO’s cred aside, print and electronic editors supress bad stuff about Bush all the time.
Why would the MSM be reluctant go with the story on Rove?
Two words:
Dan Rather
Interesting article from the CBS website regarding Bush’s lame duck status.
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories…..3700.shtml
One thing I don’t understand is that nearly every article on the subject reads “…barring another 9/11-type attack… the president’s approval numbers will not rise.”
Why the hell is that?
Wouldn’t that demonstrate even further that his “war on terror” is just a bunch of bullshit? That his illegal, warrantless wiretapping doesn’t do a damn bit of good? That his lofty rhetoric, so embraced on 9/12, means zilch in reality?
And so on down the line?
Who could possibly see this oaf for anything other than the pathetic puke he is?
cathy (#116):
when you don’t vote you give up your rights by default. what about responsibilities? what are rights without responsibilities, anyway?
one of the reasons bush is in the white house today is that there are way too many people in this country who think just like oklahoma kiddo thinks. it’s a childish neurotic pout. there! i showed those guys! i just won’t vote! ridiculous! just because you aren’t getting what you want? give me a break.
RE: winning the majority in Congress . . .
All the repubs have to do is STAY HOME on election day . . . they can support their congresscreature all they want just so long as they aren’t motivated to go out and actually vote!
Oh dear – dears – it is half past noon here on the west coast and I for one will while away the few hours left in the D.C. business day in hope our hero Fitz may yet deliver the goods we anticipate today.
I greatly admire and trust Jason Leopold – and the good folks at Truthout who steadfastly stand behind Jason and his well sourced report last weekend.
Fitz knows exactly who he is dealing with and while we can only spectulate, bide our time, and cope with our well founded expectations, this old newspaper brat remains confident he has bagged Rove and very close, if not there in bagging the the much bigger cold-blooded co-conspiring West Wing fish/ies.
I’m just sayin’ In Fitz I trust.

And all this time I’d been thinking those South Park renditions (!) of Canadians were just a cruel joke …
The constitution?????Bush thinks “its just a god damned piece of paper”.The goose stepping rubber stamping republicans in the senate and house are insuring that the kind of thrashing of the constitution expressed by their leader will be realized by blessing the curtailing of civil libertys. Oversight hearings are as rare as UFO sightings with this congess. Well, or rather WTF, it was only an experiment, and Ben Franklin’s words were prophecies come true. Gerge W Bush will indeed be remembered as George Washington was in the history of democracy in this country. One the inspiring builder, the other, the decidering destroyer..
I think the polls could be meaningless because the diebold and sequoia e- voting machines are being hacked, which they will be and thats why bush and company do not care about the polls. I strongly believe the fix is in. Can someone tell me what we are doing about it. Am i wrong?
