Mike McCurry Never saw it coming. . .
Signs of the Republican implosion are coming faster than even we bloggers can keep up these days. Each day seems to bring with it major stories, crowding each other out throughout the news cycle. Accordingly, I'm writing today more about you than about any given news event.
Here's the short form of this post: Things are changing so fast these days that establishment power brokers are frightened and frozen. They can't keep up and don't know what's happening. To propel our shared values, we should seize this moment of indecision to organize. By banding together with your peers here in smaller, activist groups for open source lobbying through the Roots Project, you can kick K-Street's ass and take government back for the people.
To join this citizen "army," send an email now to stateproject at gmail dot com with the name of your state in the subject line (nothing else!). We currently have 32 state groups, some more active than others, but our organizing model is working, and it puts you - not me or anyone else - in control. More on the flip.
A lot of people around here were depressed after Ciro Rodriguez lost his primary in Texas. We had pitched in with a nice chunk of money for him, collected in small donations from our own sweat, but we were a little late in the campaign cycle in getting it to him. I wrote a couple of perspective posts for the community the next two nights, one taking the long view and one talking about what each of you can do.
Since then, I've observed that you are the new Silent Majority in American politics, and through the Roots Project, you've been helping each other be silent no longer. I've begun to read Rick Perlstein's Before the Storm, a beautifully written and readable bit of historic storytelling detailing the rise of the conservative movement through Goldwater. The politics and the technological tools are different, but the social and political dynamics are eerily similar. This is your moment to rise and make a collective difference. We will feature this book in our Sunday FDL Book Club this Sunday.
Roots Project chapters are limited only by their own time, talent, passion and willingness to work together to accomplish results that can change our collective futures. Here are a couple of recent actions and successes, but so much has happened since these posts, I can't even keep up with posting all the successes. CA is pushing DiFi on Hayden. Boxer is coming to YearlKos after CA met with her staffers and told her they and she should go. Hillary Clinton's people held a reserved, polite, noncommital meeting with the NY group, but last time around, we shook up her operation to its highest levels with a video. IL, MD, WA and other groups are doing great things. Some groups are waiting for you to jump in and give them the critical mass they need to take effective, collective action.
Open Source Lobbying is only one thing these groups can do. There's media action as well, and I'm intrigued by this comment from ccobb last night; it fits with this agenda I sketched out last week. Media actions can take the form of video actions: You + Camera + Creativity + YouTube + Lame Politician = Power. Local actions are as or more important than federal government actions.
We've already scared the crap out of Mike McCurry and his telco buddies on Internet Freedom (net neutrality). We can hit them on cell phone spying and the great privacy sellout, too. The point is, there's so much you can do, but you can be far more effective in doing it together. If the impeachment hearings ever come, don't you want to be organized and ready to pressure our government to do the right thing? The time to get started and get to know each other is now.
Please send an email now to stateproject at gmail dot com with the name of your state in the subject line (nothing else!). Your neighbors are waiting to hear from you. (please be patient: we're all volunteers, so if we get flooded it may take a little time to get back to you.)
UPDATE: Our volunteers are definitely flooded. Please be patient! This is going to take a while. The response is tremendous, but eagerly welcomed!

Can I also point out that Gary Samore who is the “expert†cited co-wrote the IISS report arguing for war with Iraq because it already had or was on the verge of getting WMD and can i also point out that he’s been fucking wrong with almost everythnig he’s written for the last few years. Please help spread that word. The man has considerably less than zero credibility.

doesn’t matter. hyping the (non)threat is the point — war is good for ratings. cnn especially is taking a leading role in pimping a confrontation.
I called Sprint today to ask if they were sharing my calling information with the NSA and all I got was a great big Huh? I asked to speak with someone higher up to clarify but was told that it wasn’t a “pertinent enough issue.” Needless to say I came unglued. Does anyone else know about Sprint? The fact that I couldn’t get a straight answer worries me. Be Afraid.
shooogarp @ 8,
thanks for the link - now if the guy running against Hatch had half a clue - he’d remind all those latter day saints that NSA activities covers their contact with Church - and remind them of Orrin’s standing by it as legal -

thinkpregress - NSA Whistleblower To Expose More Unlawful Activity: ‘People…Are Going To Be Shocked’
More from thinkprogress:
CongressDaily reports that former NSA staffer Russell Tice will testify to the Senate Armed Services Committee next week that not only do employees at the agency believe the activities they are being asked to perform are unlawful, but that what has been disclosed so far is only the tip of the iceberg. Tice will tell Congress that former NSA head Gen. Michael Hayden, Bush’s nominee to be the next CIA director, oversaw more illegal activity that has yet to be disclosed:
A former intelligence officer for the National Security Agency said Thursday he plans to tell Senate staffers next week that unlawful activity occurred at the agency under the supervision of Gen. Michael Hayden beyond what has been publicly reported, while hinting that it might have involved the illegal use of space-based satellites and systems to spy on U.S. citizens. …
[Tice] said he plans to tell the committee staffers the NSA conducted illegal and unconstitutional surveillance of U.S. citizens while he was there with the knowledge of Hayden. … “I think the people I talk to next week are going to be shocked when I tell them what I have to tell them. It’s pretty hard to believe,†Tice said. “I hope that they’ll clean up the abuses and have some oversight into these programs, which doesn’t exist right now.†…
Tice said his information is different from the Terrorist Surveillance Program that Bush acknowledged in December and from news accounts this week that the NSA has been secretly collecting phone call records of millions of Americans. “It’s an angle that you haven’t heard about yet,†he said. … He would not discuss with a reporter the details of his allegations, saying doing so would compromise classified information and put him at risk of going to jail. He said he “will not confirm or deny†if his allegations involve the illegal use of space systems and satellites.
Tice has a history for blowing the whistle on serious misconduct. He was one of the sources that revealed the administration’s warrantless domestic spying program to the New York Times.
Use Working Assets for long distance. They are actually suing the govt. over this with the ACLU.
I have Trinsic for local calls. The phone gal said they have not turned over any records to the feds. I asked her to have the pr people put something on their web site stating that.

Welcome newbies to the Roots Project. We are experiencing a sudden influx and will get you in as fast as we can. Ain’t it great?

I met Pete Ashdown at the county Democratic Convention last month. He is a very bright guy. My conversation with him regarding the illegal NSA program(s) showed that he was up to speed on the subject and reads FDL, as well as Glenn Greenwald.
Pete started Utah’s first ISP Xmission. He understands the power of the blogs and the internet. I’m sure he had a lot more to say, but whether the reporter would put it in the story is as they say, another story.
Pete has an almost impossible task to defeat a popular incumbent Republican Senator in the Reddest state in the Union. However, we must fight, even here in Utah. The linking of being a good Mormon and not being able to be a Democrate was the blueprint for the current national GOP.

Surveillance American Style
It’s not just traffic analysis they’re doing. They’re trapping a massive amount of conversational audio and then turning it into text. This must be done in order to tag the words spoken in conversations and develop a string of probablistic associations with later speaker actions. Note that none of the information here is from classified sources; I work on the automating technologies (recognition and synthesis) and with some of the best engineers for call processing and audio mining. The NSA uses the same techniques but has oodles more resources. Here’s how it goes:
At its core, this type of surveillance requires excellent audio mining capability to return accurate text values. To mine the audio, you must analyze the signal you captured and figure out what the speakers actually said. This task is decidedly non-trivial, and quickly gets you into prediction and will soon become entangled with cognition and measured brain activity.
Mathematically, you can use the same tools to analyze patterns (Bayesian Networks, Hidden Markov Models) and cluster them statistically for speech as you would for, say, air travel. You just need the data. Preferably all of it. Once you’ve got enough data assembled and have defined domain outcomes, you can figure out all the paths that led to, or theoretically lead to, those outcomes. Then you’ve built what’s called a Finite State Machine…a method of predicting what someone wants in a topical domain, often before they know it themselves.
Then you flag the pathways that require human analysis, pass it to trained agents, and they listen and cross-check other databases to learn all about what someone wants. This is what has been built. It cannot be unbuilt. When you call up Amazon someday, they’ll be calling the same kind of huge associations database a relevancy engine for catering to your latent desires.
don’t forget that yellowcake is being sold at a Tehran bakery located near an African embassy !
Pacha - I don’t mean to interrupt, but I am going to post impeachment info:
http://tinyurl.com/a6erq
^^ HELP IMPEACH TODAY ^^
Keep the pressure on Congress… Talking about impeachment wakes people up… They question, it’s a strong motivator to get people thinking. It also lets Congress know how intense the dissapproval is for this President… They seem to be a little slow on the uptake. So please:
1) Sign petitions if you have not done so
2) Send a letter to Congress (both Senators & House rep)
3) Send a copy to the media
4) Enlist friends and family to help, ask them to chip in time
5) Spread the link around, email it (with a request to forward) post it on a blog, or in the comments of a news story.
Help out!!!
Thanks :)
P.S. I have kicking Con butt on the Yahoo boards on the NSA and Foggo stories for about the last 26 hours straight… I have picked up a lot of traffic for impeachment from the people browsing the discussions. Please, let’s try to pile on and put a little scare into corruption.

Tice is Dead.
cbl & shooogarp
I am an x-mormon. One irony about mormon behavior is that they beleive they will sweep in and save America when “the constitution is hanging by a thread.” (ask your mormon friends if they believe that).
They have a deep cultural distrust of government because of being driven out like wharf rats from both Missouri and Illinois. Then, in the 1850s, the feds sent troops to SLC “to keep an eye on the mormons.” Then there was the problem that when Mormons did want to join the union, they had to give up polygamy as part of the bargin (luckily God gave a revealation the same day so that everything was kosher — proof that God is a republican because he gives permission at the final hour ala Libby/Cheney).
So Mormons distrust government, but they buy into the symbolic patriotism of the red, white & blue, freedom, and justice.
As a group though (and also because a prophet [e.t. bensen] told them it is evil to be a democrat –did they lose their tax-exempt status?) they have been suckered in by liars and con men promising them a seat at the table when the theocracy is reintroduced.
They are too busy being happy to notice that they are being robbed blind. When they realize it, they will be pissed off.
But Mormons are great forgivers, and Orrin Hatch will be toasted with red mormon kool-aid.

Oh! Oh! Yes! Yes! Y…er… what?
MarcLord - So basically the tv show NUMB3RS is just a clever ruse to lull us into thinking that mathematicians working for the FBI/CIA/NSA is a good thing.
xyz #23 above…
Russell Tice, NSA whistleblower, in Chicago Trib story from today:
But Russell Tice, a former NSA analyst who disclosed the surveillance program Bush was referring to, said that NSA is conducting a number of programs that violate U.S. law. The NSA employees doing that work, said Tice, a 20-year intelligence veteran who was fired from the NSA last year, know it is unlawful.
“Everyone at NSA knew what they were doing was illegal, because it’s drilled into our heads over and over that it’s against NSA policy that you do not do that [domestic surveillance],” Tice said. “The choice is to speak out and get fired.”
NSA has long had probably the largest stable of mathematicians in the USA …
OT, but Woohoo!
I just found out I’m going to get press credentials to cover the CT State Democratic Convention a week from today! This is the one where Ned Lamont will hopefully capture 15% of the delegates and force a primary against Joe Lieberman on August 8th!

Just received an email from Working Assets about the NSA wire-tapping and in it they are also promoting Glenn Greenwald’s book.
bkny: “i hope tice is in a secure place until the hearing.”
I’m also hoping he doesn’t get gagged with a court order and security interference the way Sibel Edmonds did.
So… Fitzmas Interruptus today after all, eh?
No worries. With all the other news coming in so rapidly about BushCo’s exponentially mounting problems, I think we’ll be well-sated until next week or the week after, or whenever Rove finally gets taken on his frog-march.
I’m just amazed at how many staunch Republicans are visibly PISSED about this NSA domestic data mining thing.
Wrap up from several threads, so on and off topic. I did a long ramble on Late (later, latest) night last night putting together the various pieces and stories I could remember something about. Here are a couple things I’m still scratching my head over. Who saw Turley on Countdown? I swear he said that the *letter of authorization form the AG* that Qwest was demanding was the doc that Comey would not sign off on and that resulted in Ashcroft being approached in the hospital. I wondered where he came up with that, bc it does not tie with the scenario in the Newsweek article IMO. They seemed to be talking, a) about the actual eavesdropping program; b) about a document that had a history of already being issued every 45 days – as opposed to the USA Today indication that Qwest never got its certification/authorization; and c) about a situation where a “compromise was reached.†Turley seems to be a more careful guy than to Waring Blender those stories together. It all makes me wonder who has what story straight.
Backing up to the earlier post about calling Comey and Ashcroft to testify, I know I am way more of an agnostic on Comey than anyone else, but I do think Specter may be partly right in that neither is likely to testify about anything where the WH asserts Exec. Priv. So you get a Gonzales type of “I can’t speak about that response.†Even though I’m in a different camp, I have to also wonder a bit about what if either or both are or have been the source of any of the leaks? If, on the one hand, they are not going to be able to say much bc of Exec. Priv., otoh do you want to leave them open to Hatch, Kyle, etc. asking them under oath about whether or not they have spoken to reporters?
Kudos to the Greenwald piece btw, and it needs to be clear that there are different statutes and analysis that apply to the different types of programs. Another thing to keep in mind is that TODAY is the day that Gov is filing its submission in the EFF v. AT&T suit I believe (it is what their motion to intervene stipulated). While everyone is discussing conceptually the issue – Gov is asserting state secrets to shut down that lawsuit, right here and now.
Also - the wiretap tax is going forward, full speed ahead. And the “well d’uh†of “why should we believe you about what you are doing without warrants†doesn’t seem to be asked by many.
Re: the polls –the one WaPo touts is bothersome, but it was awfully slanted. Given that the telecoms are about to need support for having Gov kill the consumer suit with the filings today, and given the way the big corps sit in each other’s pockets, the corporate owned MSM is going to have at least large pockets working this as hard as they can. Actually, I spoke with someone today who is relatively middle of the road and who was appalled that the poll they heard, which was the MSNBC online that pretty much flipped the percentages, ONLY had 65% or so who were upset. What happens is that it gets very hard to do that kind of positioning and spinning on the straight JAR questions and as a result – that is where the impact is seen more than the single issue items, IMO. I also think that we just don’t have leadership on ANY of the Constitutional issues except Feingold (and Conyers, et al) unless you look OUTSIDE the Democratic party. The people willing to lock horns on this seem, sadly, by and large to be oldline Republicans.
Libby – I said b4 that I don’t see how Fitzgerald could pull off traveling from Chicago to DC without someone noticing, so I don’t much trust the “it will be tomorrow†stories when no one seems to know anything about him being seen in DC. I looked a bit at the 5-5 transcript and haven’t finished it, but what caught my attention most was in the initial statements. Gov’s theory of the case is that everything evolved from the July piece. ?? Hmmm. What about all the tidbits we have heard of about the compilation of info, contacts with reporters (like the June Libby-Miller meeting) and strategerizing going on with the WH players that all seemed to precede Wilson’s piece? Made me wonder a bit.
Working Assets Statement, I just got the e-mail:
So there’s the skinny. Not only are they good, but they are pushing Glenn Greenwald’s book.
Need more info. before switching?
larry that’s a good description but “incompetent lying sack of shit is better” :-) now back to my bulging email inbox *poof*

deeper in the article is this :
“…Qwest has been accused of massive fraud by the government and restating $3 billion in revenue. Former executives have been accused of wrongdoing, including Nacchio, who faces 42 counts of insider trading accusing him of illegally selling $101 million in company stock after privately learning Qwest might not meet its financial goals…”
hmmmm, any chance the two stories might be actually tied together ?

Yeah, even Raw Story is flogging that poll. Funny, the kind of results one can get with a poll when the question is phrased so as to guide the response in a certain direction (in this case, running and screaming away from the mean ol’ terrorists.)
Thanks for the tip cathy.

Re telcom and net neutratlity issue:
I wonder if a public education campaign on what immediate goal of the telcoms is would help. Basically what they are really saying is: We wanna make a pile of money selling TV and movie feed to our service subscribers. We could easily build more capacity and make some money doing that by using our current business model. But we decided to try to make a real old fashioned killing by bribing the government to give us monopoly power (the give away) over control of who gets to use the internet, not bother increasing capacity, and charge people up the nose for getting in the way of our new TV and movie feed business.
I dunno, maybe it needs to be simplified a little more. But that is what it is, as far as I understand it. The telcoms are getting paid for letting people use the internet, just like you pay Fedex for sending a package. When they say that they are not getting paid they are lying. It like Fedex and UPS and other parcel post and couriers want a monopoly on highways and airports so they can maximize the profit from sending people their own goods, and if you want to use them, they get to decide how much to charge you depending on what is in your package (ie, whether you are competing with them on basis of contents).
Any tech person disagrees with this, let me know how I am wrong.
I’m not sure how apt Cooper’s reference to the “tipping point” (how small things make a big difference) is for his TIME article. NSA spying (big, constitutional issue thing), 2% or 3% fall in JAR (small, how low can he go?).
Anony–prior post prior thread-satisfied with the short form yet? You ask, FDL delivers. Me, I prefer the pithy explications, snark and all, lurker though I be. LOL Thanks FDL for more than I could ever elucidate.

O/T, just for a bit of comic relief:
TAHNKS BOBBY — big laughs 4 sure!!!! ;-D
So, we now have two Iraqi units turning on each other - Shiite and Kurd - but it’s all fine and dandny over htere - no civil war - as long as the uniforms aren’t differnt colors - no civil war.
BTW - how is it that Jon Stewart was the only one to have/show the video of the Sunni graduation class who all started to riot and strip off their uniforms when they got deployment orders to Shiia controlled areas?
Too bad no good NSA coverage by — uh — Colbert and TDS, until next week.
It is like an alternate reality, isn’t it? USA Today, COlbert & TDS replace NYT/WaPO, CNN, etc.
BTW - whatever the WaPo ABC polling says - who believes that it is a “winning issue” for Republicans when you have Dobbs, Scarborough, Cafferty and even folks like Boehner and Gingrich making growly noises? Yep - they don’t represent the peel offs at all.
It becomes more and more clear - the Admin and it’s picks fib over and over and every bit and piece of the truth is drug from them kicking and screaming. It does wear people down to accept a bit more, and a bit more and a bit more of the worse, but the JAR telss the story - - they aren’t trusting anymore.
also, new Moring poll in WaPo seems faked up to me. I am not even sure I would say I disapproved of that kind of program, in a different context (like, with real Congressional oversight, halfway normal people in office who recognized law). I think it is important for those of us opposed to BushCo to get beyond sheer outrage and yelling “Get a load of this cr*p!” when we express ourselves.
So we should count to ten and take a deep breath. Points I emphasize calmly are, in this order 1) Regardless of whether program it itself is accetable or not, Executive needs to follow law, and Congress needs to perform oversight, and Courts need to review; 2) given the BushCo track record, if there is no oversight, what is the chance that it actually works -really, what is it? 10%, 20%, maybe 50% if we’re rreeaall lucky? 3) Regardless of what intent is now or what happened so far, think about potential or abuse; 4) and there is other stuff going on we don’t know about.
I also think that BushCo scaremongering is also a valid point -what is it about merely discussing this that endangers national security? Anyway, I think people who start their arguments with sheer outrage are not being very effecive.

My 2 cents, fwiw, is to go and make great rolling eyes expression when he says, well, anything. If you DON’T go, some smiling person will take up the space and it would b far better to have someone making serious faces at the Rude One.

One irony about mormon behavior is that they beleive they will sweep in and save America when “the constitution is hanging by a thread.â€
_________________________________________________________________
Our Constitution IS hanging by a thread. In fact you could argue it is hanging by a noose in a gallows built by the Bush Administration and run by the Rubber Stamp Republican Congress.
I could care less WHO sweeps into save it as long as they SAVE the Constitution and believe in the rule of law, honesty, integrity, accountability, and the Bill of Rights.
However, the ones who are going to sweep in and save America are you and me friend. Everyday Joes and Janes who care about America. Religion has nothing to do with it.

At the risk of being provocative, I say let ‘em. Kids aren’t china dolls, at least not those old enough to read, and profanity has been a legitimate part of language from the beginning.
I believe it might actually be better to explain to them what the words mean (in terms appropriate to their age) than for them to think that words alone are dangerous.
OK. I know this probally gets asked all the time but i’m new here (to the comments section anyway) But… what is “EPU’D”?
Monkeywrench - It can never be asked enough :) Thank you for asking.
Bobby G — thanks for the chart notes, I needed a good laugh

tis a very strange name indeed..makes me wonder about the authenticity of the email but it definitely is from a Sprint customer service account. I am waiting on a reply from the manager I wrote.
I just got an email back from my LDP and it was signed Odie

Anyone from Utah? I want to form a group to harass Hatch, Bennett, Cannon, Bishop. Call the Deseret News and SL Trib on the slanted and stenography reporting. You know. Fun.
twolf1 80, wow. I never watch Faux, so I didn’t realize just how much Kool-Aid some of them were sucking down.
BobbyG–weeping with uncon–troll–able laughter. Thank you SO much.
Are there phrases that put you in moderation as well as multiple links? I’m linkless and in moderation and I kind of think it may be like having to wear a dunce hat and sit in the corner for bad spelling. But the time lag on the typing makes me nuts.
In any event, what about some poll questions like:
Do you believe that Government programs that give government employees access to your business, legal, health, personal and religious information without your knowledge should have oversight by:
a)no one
b)courts
c)Congress
d)the guy at the next desk over
e)Casper, the friendly ghost
new thread - new polls
The mere mention brings a new post. You owe me.
EPU zone in effect
Thanks guys! I’m hoping to be blogging at the convention, but at the very least I’ll probably have email capabilities, so I can get word out ASAP and scoop the 11 o’clock news when Ned forces the primary.
My fellow blogger CTBlogger (http://connecticutblog.blogspot.com) is planning on setting up his Mac to publish short video clips on the fly. We’ll be working together to cover as much of the action as possible.
Plus, we have help from within Lamont’s campaign which may help open some doors.
I guess I’ll actually have to MAKE one of those EPU’d shirts that was in my photo!
…and by typing that, I’ve been EPU’d.
Gotta love it!
Bobby G — a Google search of “Large brown stool ambulating in the hall” turns up a few more…
- The patient left the hospital feeling much better except for her original complaints.
- When she fainted, her eyes rolled around the room.
WHAT???????????????????????????????
Am I getting hazed? haha.
OT - I’ve got CNN on and they are discussing the National Guard going to the border and Bush’s speech Monday night…
I suspect the speech will distract us from the NSA issues and I’m wondering if they announced the major speech this morning when they thought Rove might get indicted today…
boy, this is going to be a whole new shitstorm!

Of cabbages–and kings–

You have got to be fucking KIDDING me!!
The 28% dead-enders really are this friggin’ desperate to avoid reality, aren’t they? The pig’s out of the poke, folks. It became crystal clear yesterday that what BushCo has the NSA doing with these phone records has NOTHING to do with keeping tabs on terrorists, and EVERYTHING to do with domestic surveillance for its own sake. It’s nothing more than glorified win
