The Pod has an extremely high volume setting and is famous for his ability to displace vast amounts of water and reflect direct light from the top of his head.
See? You can play it too. It’s easy. The Pod will show you how. He was on Hannity & Colmes today talking about his new oeuvre on Hillary Clinton, and how when he calls her a bitch he only means it in the best possible way (Crooks & Liars has the clip):
HANNITY: It is a great admonition. It is a great warning, and I fully agree with you: They better not, to quote a phrase, "misunderestimate her." You say — you describe for example — you use the B-word to describe her.
PODHORETZ: I do, but I use the B-word to describe her and say that that is a virtue as the first woman presidential, you know, possibility.
HANNITY: Explain that, because you know what? A lot of people are going to get — look, I know you, and you’re a tell-it-like-it-is guy, but some people may misunderstand that.
PODHORETZ: OK, I’ll put it to you very simply: The first woman president has to be somebody who has qualities that will convey to people that she can stand up before [North Korean leader] Kim Jong Il, [Iranian President Mahmoud] Ahmadinejad, Osama bin Laden, all the worst men in the world, that she can pull the trigger when she has to, that she can negotiate, that she can stand tough and stand tall. Therefore, the first woman president has to be somebody who has qualities that we commonly associate with being unfeminine. She’s got to be tough, she’s got to be steely, she’s got to be adversarial, and she’s got to be difficult.
COLMES: That’s pretty harsh language and pretty hateful language, I would think. And then you say — you call her flat and unwomanly. Why would you degrade another human being like this?
PODHORETZ: Hey, I’m saying she’s the first — she’s going to be the first woman president of the United States. I don’t think that’s very degrading.
I get it, Pod. So if I called you a chubby, bald little crap juggler who’d starve if it wasn’t for wingnut welfare and nepotism, it would be, like, a testament to your incredible sex appeal?
(I think the Pod’s cubicle might be a bit too close to Ramesh’s — Ramesh is now very upset that people like Andrew Sullivan think his book, entitled The Party of Death, might be about the Democratic Party — just because the book jacket says it is.)
I was reading this bit from Roll Call this morning on the big telecom companies who oppose internet neutrality and I was struck by much the same feeling as when listening to the Pod:
I don’t see where this is political," said BellSouth spokesman Bill McCloskey. "It just seems odd for the Democrats to take an anti-consumer position – to say the government should set rules to deny consumers choice."
I’ll leave it to someone much smarter than me to explain exactly how making all the internet sites that can’t pay AT&T vig load much slower than the megasites who can is tantamount to denying consumers a choice. But it’s a shining example of a phenomenon that I believe needs its own name: wingnut ideas that appropriate the language of the left because they know they should be ashamed and don’t want to take responsibility for what they’re saying.
We have the Bush’s Clear Skies Act (which turned back 30 years of pollution control) and Healthy Forest Initiative (which allowed clear-cutting trees). Then there was the positively Orwellian "peacekeeper missile." The list goes on. And on. And on.
The Pod doesn’t want to take responsibility on TV for calling Hillary a flat, unfeminine bitch because he knows he crossed the line. So now it’s a compliment, it means she’s tough, steely, full of resolve — good strong, feminist traits, right? Only it doesn’t. It means she’s a bitch. But it’s out there anyway. Damage done, clean getaway, eh Pod?
Maybe not so fast. I was casting around this morning for a good name for this particular bit of hypocrisy, and Adam Green of Moveon suggested " Progressive In Language, Except Conservative Right Aiming Principle" — otherwise known as PILECRAP.
They may bash the left but when they borrow our language they admit that our principles, our ideas, our values and beliefs — like peace, clean skies, healthy forests, strong women, consumer choice — are better than theirs.
And that’s no PILECRAP.

Well, he’s in a position to know about “womanly.” After all, he definitely has larger breasts than Hillary.
And a happy Fitzo de Mayo to you TWO.
aargh, me eyes!!!
It’s Lee Raymond’s just-as-evil twin!
Onto Mary Cheney.
How is she going to react to the caluclated effort by her fathers party to fire up the gay hatred on the right just to drive the religious zealots to the polls? Will she think that Karl Rove is a “bad man”…..Will she mouth “Go fuck yourself” to Pat Robertson, Sam Brownback, Rick Santorum or John McCain?
From the Wapoo:
“Karl Rove, Bush’s top political adviser, and GOP leaders are well aware of the problem and planning a summer offensive to win back conservatives with a mix of policy fights and warnings of how a Democratic Congress would govern. The plan includes votes on tax cuts, a constitutional amendment outlawing gay marriage, new abortion restrictions and measures to restrain government spending.”

“Ugly as sin” is quite wrong. Sin has to be made attractive to get folk to abandon their better instincts. The wordsmiths of the right understand this maxim well. Affirmative-action is denounced as racism. Jane has given other better examples above …

These fucks really have destroyed language itself. And they still control huge amounts of what goes into the mass reptile brain.
That Hannity/Pod exchange: as Charles Ryder’s dad was fond of saying, such a lot of nonsense.
Ever since that pic of Pod in the pool, never been able to take him seriously. Not that I did before that anyway.
GSD,
Relax, the spelling police are off tonight
I see the logic. So I just wanted to say that Bush is a f*cking bastard who gives other f*cking bastards a bad name and I mean that in the best possible way.

the transcript won’t be up till tomorrow, but i’d like to include an ugly exchange on hardball.
of course, tweety, bob shrum and ed rogers chortled with laughter at rogers’ response to a jeb bush/hillary clinton match-up: ‘he’d beat her like a broken mule’.
I can’t believe you are giving credibility to that sack of shit by paying him any attention.
Jane- typo I assume AT&T vig load = AT&T big load but I have made some stupid mistakes before.
You know what wingnuts dream of even more than towel snapping fratboy man-on-dog love? The fantasy of being anally raped by Hilary with a strap-on!
So if I call Pod a lying sack of shit, it just means that I’m impressed by his manliness, right?
20, the spelling police never rest, but just on the main post.

GSD 7 – Mary Cheney is the antichrist. Her book and her little turn on the runway and her comments to the media are pushing my every creepshow button every bit as much as her stone evil father, but even creepily more so. She is THE FUCK EVIL SHIT.
op99 – yeah, that and a come-hither foot (huh? what’s this?)
a compliment to the commenters here: as a spelling-nazi myself, I find the comments to be amazingly correct in spelling and grammar. Quite a high level of literacy and keyboarding skills…
Re: Mary Cheney – I don’t really care about her sex life – but I have come to the conclusion that Mary Cheney is not a very nice person. But then look who her parents are. Look at the examples she’s had to emulate.
Are we sure she was looking at Edwards, and not at her father, when she mouthed “Go f*ck yourself?”
Karl Rove is mistaken if he thinks people are more afraid of gay people getting married than they are of him and his ilk.
There’s a movement afoot to make the word “bitch” gender neutral in some contexts…I think it’s something to do with prisons…Hannity and Pod and all the other neo-con chickenhawks ain’t nuth’n but punk ass bitches!!
Quite a high level of literacy and keyboarding skills…
excluding, sadly, me….
Jane, you seem to have a mental block when it comes to spelling “hypocrisy”. BTW, lest you think I’m mocking, I can’t spell “guarantee” without looking it up. I’ve been unable to spell it all my life. Don’t know why.

May 10th, 2006 at 7:02 pm (#34) If there’s such a thing as the meanness gene, I doubt Mary Cheney would have been a nice person if she’d been raised by Buddhist monks.
I thought the article I read said she’d mouthed the words to her father, perhaps meaning that this was her opinion of what Edwards had said.
“Therefore, the first woman president has to be somebody who has qualities that we commonly associate with being unfeminine.”
I think that this kind of asinine and truly stupid mindless sexist potty-talk is part of an intentional planned campaign by reactionaries to limit political participation of women, to split forces of moderates and non-political majority (both men and women) who would naturally be opposed to Bush, and generally scam, play infantilize and chumpify political discourse in the US. See my EPU’d comment at end of last thread.
And it is so common, most people probably barely notice it. I note that it took FDL a very short while to find an example of this junk after two posts on related topics. So, in the face of this propaganda, one wonders why women would be reluctant to blog or become national political leaders?
I find the kind of sexist political discussion very weird and disturbing. It is part of the Vast Rightwing Conspiracy, no doubt about it in my mind. Disclaimer: I’m no H. Clinton fan.
You know, if I was HRC, I’d call Faux and ask for a chair right next to Pod. And I’d give him the cold up-and-down elevator look, make him squirm.
And if the talking heads mentioned the Pod’s use of the B-word, I’d say, “Hell f*cking yeah, I’m a bitch with brass balls bigger than the ones you think you have. What about it?”
What is it about the right that they groom and then coddle these brainless, spineless lardballs to shape public opinion?
Cujo, I too have noticed that persistent spelling-block concerning “hypocrisy”. Personally, I can never easily remember how to spell “personnel”…dunno why.

The theft of language seems to be one of the strengths of the GOP! I think you hit it right on the head Jane. They know our ideas are better. They know there ideas can’t stand the fierce aintispeptic of public scrutiny… So they steal the shiny coating off of the Left’s good ideas and wrap their turds in them.
It’s people like Pod who give short balding fat guys a bad name

This is also the strategic background to the re-emergence of the so-called realist faction in US policy.”

By the way, I wish I was a bitch. Instead I’m just a prick.
You know, somebody’s doing the business with Hillary. It’s just hard to tell what that business is.
For instance, the DLC (including Hillary) gets their underwear in a bunch about Howard Dean, and finding nothing they can trash about him, they start a whisper campaign that he’s “far left” and “unelectable” (read Crashing the Gates on this). The ‘wingers picked up the ball and ran with it, natch.
And Karl Rove says, “Yeah, I’d love Dean to be the candidate.”
So what does Murdoch’s fundraising and the Pod’s bassackwards praise say about the ‘wingers position on Hillary?
Are they positioning her for a tumble, or is she their DINO?
Jane Hamsher, you are one evil bitch, in all the nicest ways of course!

I went through a spell where I read nothing but mafia books. Sometimes it shows.
This thing with Rupert and Hillary. I have a theory. Maybe Rupert is giving her money so she wins the nomination because he knows she would not win, and then we are stuck with a Republican president for another four years.
Personally, I don’t think Hillary, at least now, is electable nationally, and I think Rupert knows that.
RE the Hillary obsession of the impotent men of Wingnuttia: its simple projection. They still haven’t worked out their issues with their abusive mothers. Intelligent, repressed, and extremely ambitious mothers who made their sons pay for the sins of their fathers, who in turn grew up to be misogynistic pigs.
Well, that is one theory anyway.

Years ago, Gore Vidal got into it with Midge Dector and Norman Podhoretz – I forgot the cause of conflict. What I remember is that Gore, when he finally unleashed the inevitable coup de grace, referred to the two of the as…..”the waddling pods”.

OT kind of but still about the peculiar use Republicans make of information.
I was just listening to the NewsHour. Kavanaugh, Bush’s nominee for the DC circuit, was just downgraded from well qualified to qualified by ABA. So the response? The ABA ratings are overblown. Anyone remember how the ABA rating was played up during the Alito nomination? I guess the lesson is: if you agree with me, that’s great, you’re great and if you disagree, then you don’t count.
Bush Intinerary Found Next to His Presidency… in the Garbage
I wonder if this has anything to do with the Murdoch’s new chumminess with Hillary. After all, Faux can’t spin on a dime and say she’s the best thing since sliced bread. No, they have to walk this back a little bit… “you know, we’ve been saying Hillary’s a bitch for years, but we’ve meant it as a compliment all that time, yeah — that’s the ticket — we need a bitch for President”.
Mary Cheney is a flat-out freak show. She says she is gay, but it is obvious that she has got a serious Oedipal think going on with her Daddy. About as creepy as it gets in a woman her age.
VG — I expressed my gratitude to your services upthread. But thanks again. I always appreciate it.
“If ya don’t pay by Friday, ya rat, the vig gets added to the principle…”
Valley Girl@25
I think this is not a typo
Vig could be short for “vigorish”, the slang for the usurious interests rates charged by loan sharks. Putting AT&T in the same category as loan sharks may be unfair to loan sharks, but them’s the breaks. (Dictionary says that “vigorish” derives from Ukranian or Russian.)
I often wonder what sort of calculation is behind these right-wing Hilary slamfests. It seems Podhoretz and Regnery are all poised to publish these anti-Hilary titles. I mean Hilary is just not appealing to a lot of progressives, including me. Gore, Feingold, yes. Hilary, no. So is this reverse psychology? They demonize her to make us stand behind a losing centrist proposition. Maybe Podhoretz and gang aren’t even that subtle and are scared that she’d win.
From my limited lexicon, vig is when you make a bet. You can win say 5 bucks; but if you lose, the house makes a percentage in the middle for handling the bet. If you lose, you PAY 6. The extra buck for the house is ‘vig’. Kinda like the builtin’ ‘gratuity’ on certain foodemporium tabs.

Second happy bit of news: We just got tix to see Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young in July! Yippeee!!! Oh, happy, happy feet!

IMHO opinion, this pundit’s boviating is not really an example of sexism, it is an eample of opportunistically using sexism as a political weapon. I think that Hillary is a candidate that the GOP fears. They must have polling data that show Hillary’s negatives are not so deep that they would prevent her from being a strong candidate. This stupid trash talk is just an attempt to make the very thought of Hillary Clinton unpleasant and icky -pave the way for the media CW for 2008. Pavlovian reactions take time to implant. It is an attempt to brand her. It is political social engineering. Like branding Kerry as an opportunistic untruthful weasel with no principles, and Gore as a juvenile teacher’s pet whose exaggerations turn into lies on a regular basis. If one of the supposedly leading candidates were a minority, or whatever, some kind of coded smear language would be found for that person as well.
For some reason, rather blatant, and if you think about it, rather silly and stupid, but still quite offensive, sexist language is more acceptable than racist language. They have carved out smear that Hilary will be feminazi bitch headcase and that is the smear that they are planting here, for further nurturing and tending over coming months.
It wouldnt’ work if it were not for US’s interesting problem with them uppity unfeminine women (silly little things keep insisting that they might have valuable opinions), and it would not be very effective, IF the US had something called an opposition party. And IF the US media did not also use sexsm to rake in big bucks.
Why do we not hear trenchant analyses of how any of the rightwingnut women deal with the grave dilemma of femininity vs. assertion? Oh! the Humanity! How do Coulter and Malkin put aside the femine virtues? And lo! What the cost!? Oh, heavens forfend, etc. bla bla bla.
FOX capitalizes on the sad but real fact that a large percentage of the body politic likes to hear fat, scholarly ‘experts’ say stupid, bigoted things. hey, this professor guy said it’s OK to hate gays, brown people, etc. must be true, it’s on TV. these people think WWF is real.
let’s counter barrage: republicans steal. republicans are crooks. FOX likes republicans. FOX is a crook. FOX wants to steal your bass boat, your Jeff Gordon jacket and your children. FOX wants to steal your children.

Ah, Mrs. K8 (103), I am sad I have to wait for my Neil Young, because of the super-savings deal at Amazon.com. I ordered it along with Glen Greenwald’s book, etc. Waiting for publication? I guess.
Ah, PILECRAP. Reminded me of my term for the Supreme Court that’s being taken over by way of two stolen elections: Supreme Court Republicans of the Unelected Minority. SCROTUM.
So…what exactly is it that makes Hillary more of a bitch than Kay Bailey Hutchinson? Or Elizabeth Dole? Or that hideous crone from Ohio? Or Katherine Harris?
Poor Katherine Harris has started running ads here. They look like they were made her nephew Skippy using the AV equipment from Inbred Rich Fuc*tard Country Day School. She states that the big difference between her and Bill Nelson is that “I never give up and I never give in.” Then she makes a hideous smile-like grimace. It is truly awful. She’s running it like a mofo in the I-4 corridor.
108, wesgpc: “I think that Hillary is a candidate that the GOP fears. They must have polling data that show Hillary’s negatives are not so deep that they would prevent her from being a strong candidate.”
Hmmm. You know, maybe the “R” team is split right now…some think they’ll cream Hillary, some think she’ll win. Maybe they ran out this guy to say these things in order to poll on it…get the reaction from viewers, who are mostly “R” team folks.
Somehow, I still think alot of the “R” team wants Hillary to run….but you may be on to something!

Jane, you need to see this:
http://bostonprogressive.blogs…..wrong.html
“As an indication on how difficult it is likely to be for a woman who needs EC to have access to it over-the-counter or find a doctor to give a written prescription in the 72 hours for best effectiveness, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists is now advising women to get a preemptive prescription to the morning-after pill.
Get an advance prescription for emergency contraception so it will be on hand if you need it, the nation’s largest gynecologist group advised women Monday.
The new campaign aims to increase access to the morning-after pill following the Bush administration’s refusal to allow the emergency birth control to be sold over the counter nationwide.
“We want women to be prepared, well before a contraceptive failure or unprotected sex occurs. Afterward may be too late,” said Dr. Michael Mennuti, president of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
Something is very, very wrong.

I am trying to sum it all up: Highly paid GOP strategists pay obnoxious and shameless guys like this to emit these kinds of mouthfarts as part of a conscious well researched political strategy. Some one long go decided this smear is the best way to brand old H.C. That simple. It is business. The sexism of it is not found in the psyche of this guy. He may be, probably is, sexist. Maybe we would be surprised and he aint very much. But he does understand he is being paid to spout this BS. If he knows H.C. personally and that she is not really as he portrays; and if he knows that the dilemma of the Tender Trap of Femininity vs. the Strength Necessary to Lead a Nation is pile of steaming hore crap; well, he is totally cool with spouting it anyway. It is how he pays the rent. His day gig, as it were.
Actually I think it is a perfectly legitimate kind of sleazy politcal warfare. Far more so than other things the reacionaries do.
Troubling sexism is in why this junk probably works in the US. And why Dems as party are not organized enough to realize that if it does work it is bad for party, regardless of what it does to Hillary’s campaign.
rizbiz,
“FOX capitalizes on the sad but real fact that a large percentage of the body politic likes to hear fat, scholarly ‘experts’ say stupid, bigoted things.”
According to Olberman, the average age of the O’Reily viewer is over 70!! Bill is their “friend” I guess. “Fox and Friends”??? Many seniors are isolated and lonely and easy prey. Just like the telemarketer “friends” that target them and sell them anything and everything.
Ghostman #117: I am guessing that is right. But even if not, this is like a scrimmage, rehearsing various smears and slurs and digs for practice against whoever turns out to be strong. Or maybe just a preventative neutralization campaign. These guys believe in preventive war, you know. I wonder if they coordinate their polling with these little smear campaigns and psy-ops. Called active sampling control, or some term like that which I have half forgotten.
If Podhoretz had wanted to choose an image combining Hillary’s toughness and her femininity, he could have said that the difference between her and Bush is that she is the one with cojones, a sexual image that does not denigrate but plays off the contrast.
Pach–if Rove is suggesting spending restraints/reductions to get the base back (according to the WaPo you cited)–well, isn’t that like (EPU’s, I think) beating the dead horse after it has left the barn? Apologies in advance if the attributions is wrong because that metaphor mixed as it intentionally was–constituted a major hoot. A metaphor for the times we find ourselves in…
Apropos of the subject of sexism and language, I would like to acquaint my friends here with this lovely little language rant from my good friend Divalion:

The Bush Administration wants no investigations of anything ever. They slipped up once and ended up with Fitzgerald. That is not a mistake they are going to make twice.
Nice article Pach….where have you been all day?
So…what exactly is it that makes Hillary more of a bitch than Kay Bailey Hutchinson? Or Elizabeth Dole? Or that hideous crone from Ohio? Or Katherine Harris?
Hillary is the evilest feminazi bitch ever seen on this planet. For one thing, she bites off the dicks of all men she sees, using only telepathy. Really! She’s also a communist who tried to destroy our free-market health care! And also…
I am sensitized to this stuff right now. While traveling I saw lots of TV I don’t usually see. Noticed the the very sterotyped looks. Every general news caster a come-hither young sex-pot kitten or beef-cake stud. On business news, the guy reporters are just a little fat but young enough so it is not that bad looking(except for the fat old main anchors… yuk), and the women slighter older ex-sex kittens (rarely overweight) in business suits. Ever regular reporter and anchor seems very carefully typed. It is truly weird seeing this after being away from it for awhile. I don’t watch that kind of news TV much at all. Since you learn nothing from it.
I get fat easy, so fat guy reporters make me antsy, especially after I buy some high end junk food by the airport gate and am about to chew through it for no good reason at all other than boredom.
Redshift 127 – I like it.

You bet. “Never underestimate the enemy” served me well in times of old. They have their own channel, Fox, to experiment with…to see what sticks, and what doesn’t. The “R” team is being like their pet channel….crafty as a fox. They’ve started gearing up….look for more of these things in months ahead.

As someone frequently taken with backstory – would love to do some reading on Wingnut Welfare and the entire Permanent Republican Majority Infrastructure – haven’t read K. Phillips’ American Theocracy yet but suspect there’s plenty there -
but I would like to know more about the architects – Lee Atwater was great at what he did, but setting up self sustaining infrastructure was not one of them – I understand there’s monied ideologues out there like Scaife but would like to know more – e.g. – whose idea was it to set up ALEC ? Where does Heritage Foundation and Hudson Institute get their cash ?, etc.

Just wondering about those 2 lonely Abramoff visits that showed up on the SS’ access reports…
Did the FOIA request ask for the badge-in/out access for Abramoff specifically? Meaning, did the SS interpret this to mean when Abramoff came to the WH by himself, alone?
Would an FOIA request for badge-in/out access for Abramoff and all other U.S. citizens accompanying Abramoff, or all other U.S. citizens arriving within the hour before and after any Abramoff badge-in/out give us different results? How about foreign citizens?
Would an FOIA request for badge-in/out access of Abramoff by any other assumed name give us different results?
Or was the SS simply trying to signal that they need a subpoena?
I am so puzzled by the Hilary bashing from the right, I try to think of “rationales.†Like I wonder if all these shots are aimed at Hilary as senator of the state of New York, rather than the nation. Maybe the nut-wingers are trying to destabilize Hilary’s position by talking of her “ambitions†non-stop. On the other hand, it seems from the Brock book, that nutwingers were completely psychotic about Hilary on day one. I had a friend who went to school in DC and told me that “people†in DC are shocked and think NY is stupid for voting for her. When I asked “why?†She couldn’t really give a logical answer. I really liked Hilary at that point. I still like her in some ways, just not as president.
BTW. Any ideas behind the Murdoch/Hilary thing?
Another reason I like Hilary still. I remember she gave a male friend of mine a very very direct, bright smile and wave at gay day parade NYC. Another reason: I was in a hurry and introverted and almost bumped directly into her during a law school procession at Yale and she was very cool about it.
Hillary has been known to make fetus pate’ while convening her monthly witch-lesbian coven. She often uses severed penises to to stir he communist brewpot and she once shot a nun just for snoring.

It more and more seems to me that the folks at the Corner are furious at Hillary because she’s colonized so much of their ideological space that they can’t object to her policy positions without contradicting themselves.

Well, yeah, but Katherine Harris is a goddamned Gorgon! Her smile-like rictus freakin’ turns people to STONE! Say what you will about Hillary, at least she’s not some kind of inhuman monster.
You are way too kind, calling him “chubby.” He is an obese slob.
Mui,
The hatred for Hillary is intrinsic with much of the rightwing groupthinkers. She threatens them in many ways. She is intelligent and educated, she was a mother who reared a nice, bright young lady. She got a college degree, had her own career yet…She is married and stayed married to her husband even when the shit got thick.
Her very presence bashes many of the rightwing stereotypes of the modern American woman. So they project all of the evil that they have ever been told onto her because she is a threat to their very fiber.
So they make her into the bogeyman/woman they need. Even though she is straight, they call her a lesbian. Even though she is a mother, they call her a baby killer. Even though she is a wife, they say that she is a homewrecker.

As to Murdoch, he is a money man. He goes with the winners and the movers and shakers. He is doing business in Communist China, with a one child policy and 400 million abortions under their belt, not very conservative, but quite capitalistic….Money makes the world go around. Hillary is a Senator in one of the biggest media markets in the world….they can be very helpful to each other.
Is it just me, or does it look like he is about to bust into some number from Guys and Dolls? Doesn’t he look like he’s auditioning for Nicely Nicely?
I am completely tired of retro talking head idiots trying to define what a president should be, much less what a female president should be. Sorry, those tired old male constructs just don’t wash. Running around the globe acting tough just isn’t going to cut it. Intelligence is the qualifier. They can only talk about Hillary because that’s the only thing they can talk about. She will never win the Presidency, and not because they say so.
And don’t forget Bill O’Reilly. In one of his books, he talks about how he dreams every night of getting Hilary in alone “The Zone.†He says he imagines her wearing a peach pantsuit. Ughh! What a stalker! Some of this nut-wing mania seems like collective stalking and very unappealing to any woman who had the misfortune of having to deal with a man who wouldn’t take no.
137 Rayne: I think the Secret Service needs a subpoena….but I thought they were already under a Court Order. They’ll give up only what is specified, and nothing more. Now, whether Abramoff was actually at the WH twice or 200 times is open to debate. I don’t know.
144 ccmask: the key will be at the CIA editor’s office. All former agents must submit manuscripts to Langley for approval before publication. Langley has censor rights. There’s an appeal process if the author disagrees with censured lines…but it’s a long convoluted legal process.

Rayne: The funny thing about that pdf with the Abramoff visits is that they are fixed. If you open the pdf and magnify the dates of second visit, you will see what I mean.
Been on the run today, occasionally reading posts but not much into comments. Sorry if this question’s been answered already, but that guy playing Willy Loman in the graphic…who is he?

Julia 144 that’s a very trenchant observation. I wonder if she taught the technique to Bill or vice versa.
A bit off-topic, but to track back to Cohen’s recent diatribe…since he put out his piece on how he’s being attacked without mercy by the radical left-wing blogswarm egged on by the notoriously angry bloggers one could only assume that those who love what he writes, what he represents have risen to his defense. His email and indeed the blogosphere must be bubbling over with supportive pieces.
This is how the market works (pure as opposed to crony capitalism), and as he’s a very well-paid opinion writer who supposedly taps into a large degree of the zeitgeist and has alot of Important Thoughts to relate one can only assume he has his following. Recall how the terrible blogswarm arose to defend one of the MSM, Fromkin, when he was under attack. Assuming Cohen has an even larger and more fervent following, one can only await the response of his defenders with awe (and not a little shock).
NSA and Hayden are going to play hardball. Sneak preview, I guess.

Murdoch toast for Hillary bid
snip
A figure involved in the event told the Financial Times that Murdoch was backing her for the Senate, not the presidency: “They have a respectful and cordial relationship… I wouldn’t say it was illustrative of a close, ongoing relationship. It is not like they are dining out together.â€
Even so, the decision will be seen as a major step towards an endorsement for the presidency. While Murdoch’s outlets do not have the same clout in the US as in Britain, he is nonetheless a famous and influential figure. The move will worry Republican strategists, who paint Hillary as a far-Left figure out of touch with the US heartland.
That will prove a difficult message to project if she has the backing of such a prominent Right-winger.
The news will also be received with hostility on the American Left, where many believe Hillary’s gradual shift to the political centre is a betrayal of her role as an uncompromising liberal.

Way way back in Dec. or Jan. Harry Reid stopped business in the Senate. We cheered. He got attention. NOTHING happened as a result of what he did. The gesture was supposed to jump start Pat Roberts and the investigation of 9/11 Phase 2 IIRC.
The more the dems sit on their hands and not respond to these continued affronts to our democracy the more I’m beginning to believe that they want to maintain the status quo and destroy the country hand in hand with the republicrooks.
I hate thinking and feeling this way. Germany 1933.
Doubleplusungood.
Clearly, the Fox pundits think they can hang on to their base by invoking the terrifying specter of a second Clinton presidency. In fact, they may be the only people hoping she gets the nomination for the 08 race.
A reader at Andrew Sullivans blog had this to say about Ponnuru’s fecal swipes on paper calling Democrats the “party of death”.
(Snip)
Of course “Party of Death” is a hit-piece on the Democratic Party. Ponnuru has chosen his issues (abortion, euthanasia, stem cell research) as his ‘death’ issues to achieve (in my view anyway) a predetermined outcome i.e. the Democrats are the Party of Death. He’s gaming the conversation. One could easily (and perhaps should) write a book focussing on US infant mortality rates, universal health care, Just War Doctrine, inhumane treatment of prisoners, capital punishment, and sex education. Guess who’s in the Party of Death now?
-GSD
RevDeb – I keep wondering what it would take to get the Dems to speak up … each scandal seems like the one to do it and then silence. I doubt the possibility of changing the Dem party but think that our work to do so will hopefully build an infrastructure that will either move the Dems off their butts or will give us a headstart on an alternative …
on Hillary – the right’s obsession with her is perverse but why, oh why do the Dems in power also maintain their fascination with her? I am so afraid they will railroad her into the nomination. Murdoch’s support is not so odd … money talks now and she’s moved so far to the right, there’s not a lot of difference …Rupert is a very smart business man and I assume he sees that the Bush trends suggest a Dem win so he’s signing up with the one he finds least problematic.
Don’t call this guy “Pod”.

While Murdoch’s outlets do not have the same clout in the US as in Britain, he is nonetheless a famous and influential figure.
That bad for Britain, heh? I’ve never been to Britain, and here I am trying to dispel the notion of a nation of Tories. Hilary, Hilary.
I agree with what someone else said. The way it’s structured, a third party might only be a spoiler. So I guess it’s: keep plugging.
Guess who’s in the Party of Death now?
Never mind the fact that J.C. Himself probably wouldn’t approve of guns.
The developing synergy between Fox and Hill is a bit scary. They give her crossover cred and she gives them something to complain about 24-7. Imagine surviving 8 years of Bush just to get that. Bleccchhhh
ot: Isn’t this convenient — why Buscho can’t investigate itself.
By DEVLIN BARRETT, Associated Press Writer Wed May 10, 7:49 PM ET
WASHINGTON – The government has abruptly ended an inquiry into the warrantless eavesdropping program because the National Security Agency refused to grant Justice Department lawyers the necessary security clearance to probe the matter.
The Justice Department’s Office of Professional Responsibility, or OPR, sent a fax to Rep. Maurice Hinchey (news, bio, voting record), D-N.Y., on Wednesday saying they were closing their inquiry because without clearance their lawyers cannot examine Justice lawyers’ role in the program.
“We have been unable to make any meaningful progress in our investigation because OPR has been denied security clearances for access to information about the NSA program,” OPR counsel H. Marshall Jarrett wrote to Hinchey. Hinchey’s office shared the letter with The Associated Press.
Jarrett wrote that beginning in January, his office has made a series of requests for the necessary clearances. Those requests were denied Tuesday.
“Without these clearances, we cannot investigate this matter and therefore have closed our investigation,” wrote Jarrett.
Justice Department spokesman Brian Roehrkasse said the terrorist surveillance program “has been subject to extensive oversight both in the executive branch and in Congress from the time of its inception.”
Roehrkasse noted the OPR’s mission is not to investigate possible wrongdoing in other agencies, but to determine if Justice Department lawyers violated any ethical rules. He declined to comment when asked if the end of the inquiry meant the agency believed its lawyers had handled the wiretapping matter ethically.
Hinchey is one of many House Democrats who have been highly critical of the domestic eavesdropping program first revealed in December. He said lawmakers would push to find out who at the NSA denied the Justice Department lawyers security clearance.
“This administration thinks they can just violate any law they want, and they’ve created a culture of fear to try to get away with that. It’s up to us to stand up to them,” said Hinchey.
Pod is an M*****F***ER, but I only mean that in the best possible way.

ew security glitch found in Diebold system
Officials say machines have ‘dangerous’ holes
By Ian Hoffman, STAFF WRITER
Elections officials in several states are scrambling to understand and limit the risk from a “dangerous” security hole found in Diebold Election Systems Inc.’s ATM-like touch-screen voting machines.
The hole is considered more worrisome than most security problems discovered on modern voting machines, such as weak encryption, easily pickable locks and use of the same, weak password nationwide.
Armed with a little basic knowledge of Diebold voting systems and a standard component available at any computer store, someone with a minute or two of access to a Diebold touch screen could load virtually any software into the machine and disable it, redistribute votes or alter its performance in myriad ways.
“This one is worse than any of the others I’ve seen. It’s more fundamental,” said Douglas Jones, a University of Iowa computer scientist and veteran voting-system examiner for the state of Iowa.
“In the other ones, we’ve been arguing about the security of the locks on the front door,” Jones said. “Now we find that there’s no back door. This is the kind of thing where if the states don’t get out in front of the hackers, there’s a real threat.”
This newspaper is withholding some details of the vulnerability at the request of several elections officials and scientists, partly because exploiting it is so simple and the tools for doing so are widely available.
A Finnish computer expert working with Black Box Voting, a nonprofit organization critical of electronic voting, found the security hole in March after Emery County, Utah, was forced by state officials to accept Diebold touch screens, and a local elections official let the expert examine the machines.
Black Box Voting was to issue two reports today on the security hole, one of limited distribution that explains the vulnerability fully and one for public release that withholds key technical details.
The computer expert, Harri Hursti, quietly sent word of the vulnerability in March to several computer scientists who advise various states on voting systems. At least two of those scientists verified some or all of Hursti’s findings. Several notified their states and requested meetings with Diebold to understand the problem.
The National Association of State Elections Directors, the nongovernmental group that issues national-level approvals for voting systems, learned of the vulnerability Tuesday and was weighing its response. States are scheduled to hold primaries in May, June and July.
“Our voting systems board is looking at this issue,” said NASED Chairman Kevin Kennedy, a Wisconsin elections official.
“The states are talking among themselves and looking at plans to mitigate this.”
California, Pennsylvania and Iowa are issuing emergency notices to local elections officials, generally telling them to “sequester” their Diebold touch screens and reprogram them with “trusted” software issued by the state capital. Then elections officials are to keep the machines sealed with tamper-resistant tape until Election Day.
In California, three counties — San Joaquin, Butte and Kern — plan to rely exclusively on Diebold touch screens in their polling places for the June primary.
Nine other counties, including Alameda, Los Angeles and San Diego, will use Diebold touch screens for early voting or for limited, handicapped-accessible voting in their polling places.
California elections officials told those counties Friday that the risk from the vulnerability was “low” and that any vote tampering would be revealed to voters on the paper read-out that prints when they cast their ballots, as well as to elections officials when they recount those printouts for 1 percent of their precincts after the election.
“I think the likelihood of this happening is low,” said assistant Secretary of State for elections Susan Lapsley. “It assumes access and control for a lengthy period of time.”
But scientists say that is not necessarily true.
Preparations could be made days or weeks beforehand, and the loading of the software could take only a minute or so once the machines are delivered to the polling places. In some cases, machines are delivered several days before an election to schools, churches, homes and other common polling places.
Scientists said Diebold appeared to have opened the hole by making it as easy as possible to upgrade the software inside its machines. The result, said Iowa’s Jones, is a violation of federal voting system rules.
“All of us who have heard the technical details of this are really shocked. It defies reason that anyone who works with security would tolerate this design,” he said.
http://www.whatreallyhappened.com/
Here are the details. Built into the software that runs the Diebold machines is a piece of code called an interpreter. This is similar to the BASIC language found on older computers like the Apple II, the Commodore 64, etc. The interpreter accepts instructions written in a specific language, translates them into executable instructions, and then executes those instructions.
What Black Box voting has found is that when a memory card is inserted into the Diebold machines, the software quickly checks the memory card for files written in that special language. If none are found, the machine operates normally and can pass all inspections and tests for accuracy. But, if the particular memory card inserted into the machine, on election day, has a file written in that special language, that file is read by the interpreter and the instructions carried out. Such a program can change vote results, erase audit trails, and even erase the program file on the memory card to conceal what has been done. The person inserting the card may not even know what is going on.
There is no reason for such an interpreter system to be in a voting machine. The theory of a voting machine is that the software is locked in and unchangeable. All it does is count button presses and save the record. There is no legitimate need for an on-board interpreter that looks for an executes programs on the vote tabulation memory cards.
The point is this; this interpreter proves that the problems with the voting machines are not “glitches”. They are intentional functions designed into the systems, with the sole purpose of stealing elections for whomever the owners of the machines are working for.
Weird, I don’t know how I messed up that link in #129. It should be “my good friend Divalion.”
re: the OP- what a load of hetero-patriarchal-crap. First off, the only reason this guy thinks a woman has to be “unfeminine” to be president is because he’s a man. Pardon my french but fuck that shit. I know plenty of feminine women that could kick my ass – and one of them is my mother.
I’m so tired of this meme.
I attended an event on the East Coast where JPod was in attendance. He was attentive (to a degree) to his small children. Of course, the way he was tucking into the buffet, he may not be around by the time she comes “of age.” Oh, if she only knew…

GSD (150), I agree. The right has been stalking Senator Clinton for many years. They are afraid of her! Not only is she competent, savvy, intelligent, and hard-working, she has political Bill in her arena. Matthews smugly denigrates her in almost every one of his programs. It would be devastating for the right (male and female, and for too many in the left), if Hillary became president and disproved all the negatives that are broadcast far and wide. I have great admiration for her but will wait to see where things are in 2008 before I know where by heart and head lie. Very recently I was called “irrelevant and silly” by a blogger because, among other things, I said I think a lot of the anti-Hillary spiel is sexist. I stand by it. The right’s idea of a model female is Miz Laura who has done nothing as First Lady but lose two dress sizes. Irrelevant and silly. Maybe, maybe not.
The wingnuts better watch out. All their wacky Hillary hate is going to rally all the the Dems who aren’t really fans behind her. But maybe that’s the point. Hillary hate is their main rallying cry and fund-raising goldmine.
ok- we know Blair is a poodle but is Pod implying Bush is a bitch because he stood up to the world’s evilest evil guys?
Does this mean it’s now fair game to openly speculate on the size of Dubya’s tiny penis? As a means to analyze his motives, of course.
Podhoretz, like Toady Snow and so many on the right, is a SMMTB, a Sun Myung Moon Tittie Baby.
Moon swindled billions from the Japanese and used it to stuff the opinions of people like Pod and Pruden down the nation’s throats for the last 20 years. Moon BRAGS about using the paper to manipulate our country and did so by funding these extremist freaks for so long they are now considered “mainstream” conservatives.
From “Moonstruck: The Reverend and his Newspaper†by Ann Louise Bardach written in 1992 printed in 2004 in the book Killed, Great Journalism Too Hot to Print by David Wallis.
Notably among the paper’s(Washington Times) first staffers were the children of conservative luminaries, a group dubbed the “mini-neocons.” They included John Podhoretz, whose parents Norman Podhoretz and Midge Dexter are veritable conservative institutions, Liz Kristol, Irving’s daughter, Danny Wattenberg, son of Times columnist Ben, and Dawn Weyrich, daughter of conservative icon, Paul Weyrich. …
(Pod): “There was exceptional freedom at the paper, but the price of working there was that you sometimes had to carry water for a madman.”
Podhoretz spent time with the “madman” on four separate occasions, including the July party when Moon spoke for forty-five minutes. ……..
Podhoretz describes his decision to leave the Times as a “personal one which I will not discuss.” However, some of his colleagues say that he was deeply troubled upon his return from an Alaskan fishing trip he took with Moon last August. Moon used the occasion, say sources, to expound on his “Zionist conspiracy theories” and what Podhoretz perceived to be undiluted anti-Semitism. …
Charlotte Hayes, who wrote a hilarious and snarky memoir in The New Republic entitled “I was Moonie Gossip Columnist,” still laments the loss of the generous expense account she had at the paper. “This is on the Rev.,” Hayes, a thoroughbred conservative, would tell sources as she lunged for meal checks. “The Times,” she added drolly, “is a place for free market conservatives to escape the free market.”
Conservatives are a soul selling lot.
Sally says: Matthews smugly denigrates her in almost every one of his programs.
Matthews has a full blown fetish for Hillary. He gets extra foamy mouthed when he talks about her.
PILECRAP, Pod and Midge’s summer home.
