Raw Story got its hands on a copy of an invitation that I've been trying to track down for the last few days (good on them!). I had heard through several sources that Denny Hastert had tapped Dick Cheney and Porter Goss as the recipients of this year's House Distinguished Service Awards (from the GOP side of things), but that he's been refusing to comment on the record with any journalist who was asking him about it. Weird, huh?
No idea when the two GOP awards candidates were picked, but given the fact that one of them has a public approval rating in the basement around 18% (or less, depending on the poll) and who shot a man in the face this year; and the other just resigned on Friday due to several subordinates being involved in Forni-Gate and other unsavory federal investigations for bribery and contracting infractions (okay, and poker games and hookers...) -- well, you'd think that someone would have been able to get Speaker Hastert on the record to explain his selection process.
But there's been nothing. Which had me thinking, if they were trying so hard to bury this, it deserved a whole bunch of sunshine.
And note that the other two selections -- made by the Democratic leadership in the House -- are Father Robert Drinan (former congressman from Massachusetts, as well as being a distinguished Jesuit professor) and former Rep. Lindy Boggs (former congresswoman from Louisiana, as well as having been the US Ambassador to the Vatican.)
The difference between the GOP and the Dem selections is striking, isn't it?
Also, just a reminder this morning: the YearlyKos hotel registration deadline is approaching on May 15th. There are some fantastic panels scheduled, and we are working on a Firedoglake breakfast (thanks to Pach who is doing the heavy lifting on this one!) and some other FDL fun. Beyond the fabu Plame panel that Jane has set up for everyone, Jane and I will also be doing some other panel discussions throughout the conference.
It's going to be a fun time -- and highly educational, as well as entertaining. Having met a number of other bloggers in person, I have to say that I'm really looking forward to a large number of the announced panels. (Just browse through the list on the YearlyKos site and see if the breadth of knowledge doesn't amaze you, too.) These folks are as amusing and snarky in the flesh as they are in print. And the amount of heart and work that all of them put into moving our progressive cause forward is truly inspirational. Can't wait for YearlyKos -- I'm looking forward to meeting so many of our readers in person most of all.
UPDATE: Larry Johnson has more on the mess at the CIA and the Gosslings here and here. And the Muck has even more.

We will need a month of Sunday afternoon book club to discuss it.

Repukes reward incompetence.
They are truly cockroaches, allergic to sunshine. They scurry from the truth. And the lowering poll numbers show that Americans aren’t as stupid as they get credit for. Even with shitty media.
once more, Thank You, Ms. Sunshine!
Why do I keep thinking “Hitler’s bunker, April 1945….”? I know it’s hubrisious and I don’t want to go there. But:
What. could. they. be. THINKING!?
The “peppering” happened this year…
Fitz you — thanks. Will fix it. Clearly, I’m gonna need more coffee. *g*
Christy,
You’re rocking in the morning, as usual. Yes, this:
… but given the fact that one of them has a public approval rating in the basement around 18% … and shot a man in the face last year; and the other just resigned on Friday due to several subordinates being involved in Forni-Gate and other unsavory federal investigations for bribery and contracting infractions (okay, and poker games and hookers …
is exactly how it should be phrased the next time Speaker Hastert is in front of a microphone. Wonder if he’ll be a bobble-head this coming Sunday, or any Sunday in the near future …
So, what’s the thinking here? “Poor little Dickie…nobody likes him. Poor little Portie…he just lost his job. I know! Let’s give them an award! That’ll make ‘em feel better.â€
Or is it: “Hmmm…fair and balanced, fair and balanced. What balances really bad approval ratings, possible involvement in CIA leak probe, losing one’s job and getting pulled into the hooker scandal? I know – an award that says they’re selfless public servants who have served with distinction! That’ll take the stink off and make all the badness go away.â€
“If it gets really bad, we can give them Congressional Medals of Freedom!â€
Ack and gak. Big time.
Imagine being the Democrats’ choices for this award…kind of takes the shine off the trophy when the other guys holding one are Cheney and Goss, doesn’t it? Imagine having to tell people who the other awardees were.
I think I’d gracefully demur, and suggest that the Democrats put up no one to receive the award; let these two “winners†stand alone so people can see what losers they really are.
Surely it is about time for “The Note” to mention that the Grand Jury is meeting?
Carrying on from the previous thread, I would like to urge you all to join in when there are public demonstrations against the war(s) and the administration’s crappy policies. We need more 40-60 year olds out in the streets. The media loves to ignore the young folks without ties. I’m a 46-year-old long-haired tattooed white soccer dad with a cobra snake for a necktie. It breaks my heart to go to protests with kids who drive all night to get there when a lot of the anti-war Dems who live in the nearby suburbs are too busy to even know that the protests are going on. There’s an action May 18 2-4 PM at the White House if you want to come on down.
peace,
jim
*snerk* Attaturk…you crack me up, man. No news on whether they are meeting or not from people who might be in a position to actually pay attention to something other than the weekly room schedule.
Fr. Drinan will show up for this? You have got to be freaking kidding me. Either that or EVERYBODY IN THE FUCKING WORLD EXCEPT US IS A TWO-BIT WHORE, NO MAKE THAT A DIME WHORE.
*hurling in disbelief*
Have been meaning to say thank you for all you guys do here at FDL. Not sure I could actually get through my day without checking in. I’m going to be on the road on Friday (traveling to see my mom) so I’m hoping to hear some great news at my destination.
Keep up the good work. Lots of regular folk here in Texas appreciate you.
When your poll numbers are down or your are involved in a scandal - you get a medal. Cheney’s award will be for outstanding (chimpy’s favorite adjective) marksmanship and Goss’ will be for trying to fix the CIA by leaving.
OT - anyone catch “>this TDS clip?
What a ruse!! With the GOP, it’s all about DISTRACTION and ORWELLIAN MISDIRECTION… Who knows what this is meant to obscure, or if it is meant just to cloud the waters as they try to install Hayden as Director of Thoughtcrime Prevention, and sidle by the possibility that the self-loathing GOP “poker” parties at the Watergate were attended by Goss and other hypocrites who have a thing for young boys?!
Drizzle, Drazzle…Drazzle, Drone…Time for this one to come home!!
I hate even having to think about these sick fucks, yet I am up at 6a thinking about quitting my job to work full-time to fight the upcoming election fraud, and for the impeachment of BushCo.

and they call us cynical . . .
I had Hastert tagged as an embarassment to Illinois,(worse, to the country) a worse than nothing “rubber stamp” of a political hack. If this award thing is true, he is beyond a “nothing”. Someone must have squeezed his head in a wrestling match so severe, that what little brains he had shifted to his ass, and he now operates from that locale in keeping with the republican way of doing things. He is truly Bush’s and Cheney’s last hope from both being impeached.
We should be thankful for little things, at least they didn’t print it “Democrat Leader”…
And using the appellation “The Honorable” is so quaint, kinda like the Geneva Conventions
Frank at 21 — It’s true. I confirmed it with a coupla Congressional offices over the weekend. No word as to whether the Speaker made the selections himself — or whether DeLay and others had a hand in it as well. Perhaps some journalist might want to use that cocktail weenie access to find out…
You sure this invite didn’t come from the Onion?
No wait, they’ve been more accurate than they NYT or WaPo since W got anointed.

What’s really breathtaking is their unrelenting cynicism, determination, and shamelessness.
GOP Terminators. Fitz don’t fail us now.
I don’t get what the problem with these awards are. The most corrupt congress of all time is awarding two people who exemplify their principles. They should be honored for their duty.
I think we should all send Cheney and Goss congratulation letters.

Lindy is Cokie’s Mom … her brother is a big big bigtime lobbyist. Her father was also a Congresscritter who died while in office in an Alaskan plane crash. Obviously, the Boggses are power-players both in D.C. and Louisiana…
Funny, the invitation is missing the standard
SHITSTORMRain Cancels provisoChristy:
Just a quick note/question. Now memory may not serve me correctly, but I thought that Lindy Boggs’ daughter was none other than the doyenne of the Kool Kids D.C. set, that nonpartisan hack, Cokie Roberts. I mean, if the resemblance in the picture at the link you have linked to does not give it away, I don’t know what does. I was wondering if there was any way that such accolades from the Democratic side of the aisle to her mother (who, like her late husband, was also a Democrat) might get Cokie to play a little bit fairer with her reportage on NPR, since she is so quick to talk about how ineffectual people like Pelosi are. I mean, if nothing else, it shows that Pelosi is a much bigger person for putting up with the slings and arrows, and still be able to honor someone for being an honorable person ding honorable work. More than I could ever say for Cokie Roberts…
Wow, ccmask, Byron York has got to be on the payroll of Scooter’s defense fund. Straight outta Comstock.

I guess any parent could throw off a bad seed occaisionally.
Anne (#10): giving meaningless medals indiscriminately is a SURE sign of a desperate government. i was in Moscow in 1991 (just before the junta that tried to topple gorbachev). i was in a grocery shop that only foreigners were allow to shop in. it was a crowded Sunday afternoon. when i got to the cassa, the cashier didn’t have the proper change to give me for my purchases. there wasn’t much needed so i said “it’s nothing”, and started to leave. the manager of the store followed me out the door and handed me a medal. something about culture and friendship embossed on the cheap metal. just because i didn’t create a fuss over them not having the correct change!

He is absolutely. I love how his article reveals an absolute ignorance of the law and how the legal system is supposed to work. Apparently, conservatives are frustrated Fitzgerald isn’t like Ken Starr. Believe me, if Rove is indicted - it will only get worse. York, and the right wing smear machine will go after Wilson and Fitzgerald hard. The swift-boating that Kerry went through will look tame by comparison.

Hey fellow FDL’rs, we may have us a filibuster to support.
http://www.boston.com/news/nat.....ance_bill/
This Enzi bill is very, VERY bad news for insured employees of small businesses, and a poor solution for small business owners. We really need to get on the stick about this, since every one of us 1) gets cancer screening at some point, 2) knows someone, friend or family, who’s working for a small business, and 3) know someone who’s life has been helped by early preemptive cancer screening (me, for example). And cancer screening like mammograms and prostate exams/PSA tests are only one issue that the Enzi bill threatens.
The real solution is universal, single-payer healthcare; get businesses/employers out of the business of providing healthcare.

Here’s a couple of paragraphs from Byron York, when Ken Starr was in action against Clinton. How things have changed for Byron…….
So there’s still a lot going on. And there could conceivably be more, because there is always at least an outside chance of new prosecutions, and any of the already-scheduled trials could be delayed by new litigation. On top of that, Starr is required to write a final report, which will be submitted to the panel of judges who selected him. Once they approve, it will be made public. Don’t look for it anytime soon. Lawrence Walsh, the Iran-contra independent counsel, was appointed in December 1986; his final report was made public in January 1994. At that pace, Starr’s report should be at a bookstore near you sometime in early 2001.
Starr also had to deal with an emotionally volatile witness (Lewinsky) represented by an erratic and irresponsible lawyer (William Ginsburg), protecting a powerful target (Clinton), who resisted Starr with the help of two key witnesses (Vernon Jordan and Betty Currie) who almost certainly did not tell Starr’s grand jury all they knew. Yes, Starr aggressively pursued the truth. But if he was to evaluate the core allegation — that Clinton lied under oath and acted with Jordan and Currie to obstruct justice — he was going to have to ask a lot of people a lot of questions.
But how should Starr have investigated the accusations against the president and his circle without spending a great deal of time and effort trying to learn what was true and what was not? Remember that, for the most part, Starr was investigating allegations of perjury and obstruction of justice. The entire investigation hinged on whether the president and his friends had told the truth.

Byron-go collect your $$$$$ from the administration!
You’re right, my mistake.
I know she gave birth to Cokie but Lindy is adorable and she went to my alma mater…Newbomb College (RIP Newcomb). She is a southern lady and she lives in the French Quarter. She is an old school New Orleans and I love her for that. How many elderly former Congress people would do that? My guess is not many.
She took over after her husband died in that plane crash. It is odd how our best Louisiana politicians end up dead and the worst end up in jail. Not a good profession to be in if you are from Louisiana.
Slothrop, mine too, see above -
Comps in history: Hitler presenting awards to the Honorable Josef Goebbels and the Honorable Hermann Goering;
Stalin pinning medals on Beria…etc.
Seems to be the easiest thing in the world for a tin-horn, carny of a wanna-be dictator to decorate the chests of the slavering, gibbering flock.
I hope Drinan turns it down (although I’m sure he won’t).
Hey, cut Byron some slack! Back in the early 70s, I helped to drive Nixon from office for war crimes, perjury, finance violations, and gawd-knows-what. It was a high-point in my life! Mr. York almost did it about a mere blowjob — he still basks in those heady days…
The news seems to reflect an ever-escalating spiral of FU objectives perpetrated by The Decider and his Merry Decider Enablers. In other words, I guess The Decider has just been Decidering on more effective ways to F-over more people.
This may go down in the history books as the “Drop Dead” administration. Come to think of it, there’ no way that the Dems are the Party of Death. It’s the other way around (as we all know). Let’s shout it to the heavens: GOP is the Party of Death!

What a whore that York is. No, whore would imply a certain amount of on-board intelligence.
Meat puppet. Babs Comstock’s meat puppet. We should check under her nails, see if there’s any York DNA, what with all the flailing away she did while puppeteering.
Like this crap:
Umm, yah. Did any of these witnesses actually talk with the media persons in question, like Novak-ula? Let’s not choke that out of the puppet, I guess…or this bit:
I’m surprised that Babs would even try this shallow crap with the meat puppet. If the CIA said there was a breach, that should have been enough…but I guess that’s been part of the White House/OVP’s goal all along, to marginalize the CIA. In this respect, Bab’s gets a two-fer.
Hastert didn’t want to talk about the awards with journalists?? If something can’t see the light of day, then it must be something that should be left under the rock.

Nice job, Bushie.
He will probably add Katherine Harris to the list of honorees since they are throwing her under the train in Florida.
I always wondered about that plane crash. I was a student of Cokie’s sister, Barbara Boggs Sigmund when that happened. He was missing forever.
I wonder what Lindy thinks of Cokie’s allegiances to the right. I know Barbara (former Mayor of Princeton who would have gone far in NJ politics had cancer not gotten her) would be as disgusted as I am.
Will they have an Honorable Mention for Delay???
I’m curious.
Is it a typical thing for Americans to use “Honorable” in this manner.
In Canada, members of Parliament are referred to in this manner. And we also use Right Honourable, but exactly when I can’t remember at this time.
But in England it is also used to refer to someone who is an aristo. IIRC “The Honourable Miss Jane Doe” has a father who is a Sir John Doe.
It strikes me as strange to see it used in your republic.
Redd: “I had heard through several sources that Denny Hastert had tapped Dick Cheney and Porter Goss as the recipients of this year’s House Distinguished Service Awards (from the GOP side of things), but that he’s been refusing to comment on the record with any journalist who was asking him about it. Yeah, but not as weird as seeing the ‘honorable’ in front of Dick Cheney’s name.

Bionic (87) - yes, there is a etiquette/protocol for addressing elected officials. I believe the same title also applies to Senators, Representatives and Judges, implies not anything more than their status as an official. Perhaps if Americans were a little less casual (take that how you will) it would not seem quite as odd as it does when an honorific is used.

Early last month, I highlighted an appeal to support progressive South Dakota State Senate candidate Charon Asetoyer. The Executive Director of the Native Women’s Health Education Resource Center on the Yankton Reservation, Asetoyer is challenging an opponent–Cooper Garnos–who compiled a zero voting rank on women’s health and safety issues during his previous legislative term.
In the wake of the South Dakota legislature’s nearly complete ban on abortion last February, more women than ever before are running for office in the state–frequently on women’s rights platforms. Asetoyer, a Comanche, decided to run (after an appearance on RadioNation with Laura Flanders) to combat bills detrimental to women’s rights and the rights of families that were passed by the last two legislatures. “I feel we are going into a frightening time. Legislators are going down a dangerous path and it is very scary,” she told Indian Country Today recently. ”They are trying to get the public to buy into the idea that contraceptives abort a pregnancy, that’s wrong. They are trying to go after our contraceptives.”

i seriously doubt it. some serious hallucinogens work probably unfuck his brain a wee bit.
Nominally on topic (related to Goss)
Josh at TPM points out ( http://tinyurl.com/qxtu5 ) that the reporters and editors at the NYT can’t even get Mitchell Wade’s name (of MZM fame) right. Since anyone who has followed this story in the slightest (let alone who is nominally writing about it) knows his name, this indicates a pretty high level of unfamiliarity. They appear to simply not know about the story.
Never attribute to malice what could just as easily be attributed to incompetence. It’s almost worse to think that the reason the MSM isn’t talking about Fornigate may not be nefarious covering for the King, so much as simple ignorance.
Fahrender,
Look up HST’s article written on 9/12. It is shockingly accurate in what he predicts. He is sorely missed.
Look at this quote:
(Snip)
“The towers are gone now, reduced to bloody rubble, along with all hopes for Peace in Our Time, in the United States or any other country. Make no mistake about it: We are At War now — with somebody — and we will stay At War with that mysterious Enemy for the rest of our lives.”
(Snip)
“It will be a Religious War, a sort of Christian Jihad, fueled by religious hatred and led by merciless fanatics on both sides. It will be guerilla warfare on a global scale, with no front lines and no identifiable enemy.”
