Here is the announced Sunday line-up for all the talking head shows:
Meet the Press (NBC): Nancy Pelosi, the WaPo’s Dan Balz, Vanity Fair’s Todd Purdum, and comedian Steve Bridges (the Bush impersonator).
[RH says: was on a call with Rep. Pelosi earlier this week, and I hope she'll talk about the MedicareD deadline coming up and what it means for seniors, the disabled and their families trying to make their way through the maze of different plans. What a mess. Am looking forward to Purdum talking about his new article on Dick Cheney as well -- should be interesting.]
This Week (ABC): Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R-GA), Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), Rep. Tom DeLay (R-TX), Howard Dean, Martha Raddatz, Katrina vanden Heuvel, George Will, and a farewell to Scott McClellan.
[RH says: Chambliss and DeLay in the same hour. I'm not certain my stomach can take it that early in the day. Maybe I'll tune in to the second half once Dean starts and to see what they do in the McClellan send-off. Or maybe we'll just be better off watching Totoro instead.]
Face the Nation (CBS): Sen. John McCain (R-AZ), the WaPo’s Colbert King and the NYTimes David Brooks.
[RH says: Yawn. Although Colbert King is always a good interview.]
Late Edition (CNN): Sen. Pat Roberts (R-KS), Rep. Jane Harman (D-CA), Mike Leavitt, Health and Human Services secretary, Dr. Mowaffak al-Rubaie, Iraq’s national security adviser.
[RH says: Hmmm...wonder if Fornigate will come up. And I wonder if Mike Leavitt has any explanation as to why the MedicareD plan sucks rocks.]
Fox News Sunday (FOX): Rep. Pete Hoekstra, Sen. Arlen Specter, Jim Gilchrist, founder of The Minuteman Project, and, Mark Lerner, new Washington Nationals owner.
[RH says: Ooops, forgot to do Fox' Sunday programming. Sorry gang. Although, frankly, not all that exciting.]
The above photo is a male ruby throated hummingbird flying near a red petunia. I found this great picture on an educational page that has some fascinating information about the coloration of feathers among birds — well worth the read on both that page and the other link to the Cornell birding website.
We have a little male ruby throat that hangs out at our windowbox under the kitchen window that looks out onto our back patio. I generally plant some fuschias and some red impatients in there, and he jealously guards "his" flowers all summer long. It’s so funny, because he chases off bees, other hummingbirds and even us, on occasion, if he thinks we are getting to close to his nectar stash.
At our old house, we had a lovely front porch that went the length of the house, with a lovely porch swing on one end. Every year there, I would put up a hummingbird feeder on the end opposite our swing, and hanging baskets of red ivy geraniums on the end closest to the swing. We always had a number of hummingbirds who visted each summer, including a little male ruby throat who liked to perch in the geraniums and serenade us when we were out on the swing.
Am planning on putting together a couple of planters with red pentas, lantana and alyssum (butterflies love these, but the hummers like the pentas as well) and perhaps a canna or two for our front porch this year, along with the hanging baskets of miniature wave petunias and ivy geraniums. We ought to have quite a few butterflies and hummingbirds out front this year, especially with all the other perennials I’ll have coming up around our front porch. If I could only get the butterfly weed (asclepias) to thrive, I’d be in heaven but, alas, it never seems to grow well for me.
The rhododendrons on the side of our driveway are budding. When the flowers pop out, I’ll snap a picture or two to share with everyone. Last year’s display was gorgeous, and I’m hoping we’ll get a bit more rain to push this year’s along as well. Now, if I can only find some time for some weeding in my flower beds, I’ll be very happy.

I would have said “blows donkey,” but you’re so much more genteel, that’s why you’re famous. :)
C’mon left coasters, up, up, it’s 7 am already! Whole lotta fitzin goin on!
Redd,

lol sharkbabe. Good morning. I love hummers and have feeders all over the yard. Don’t know what I’ll do with them when I head back to New Orleans in a couple of weeks. I’ve never seen a hummer in New Orleans. Maybe I’ll hang the feeders just in case.
Watching Totoro is always a better option. :)
No one winnows and chaffs better than the FDLaker’s – no one.
Keep live-blogging the news people – we don’t all have Tivo’s and Real-players.
At the moment we maybe like some ‘eye-of-Sauron’ ‘keeping an eagle eye on the evil claven – soon we may have power to fry their ass’s with a laser like precision. Technology moves fast these days.
Whatever they use against us may be taken down and used against them after all…and if they retreat to the bunkers?
We simply bury them alive.
It’s the last days of the Forth Reich and liberation day is coming – thank you FRDlakers; it’s springtime for laughter and love.
btw, who won the Kentucky Derby yesterday? I chuckled to hear one of the entries being named Sinister Minister.
RH, You did a great job on the 3 part latest Fitz series the other day.
Good luck with the hummingbirds.
Sharkbabe-
I’m a left coaster and it’s 6:13 am.
Morning ‘dogs.
There’s more news on Hookergate at the NY Times. I posted this in the last thread but I’d like everyone to see it:

(Got it from Josh Marshall)
EPU’d first thing on a sunday morning, thats just wrong.
off to read the post
prof rat 10 – uplifting words. thanks.
Well, some boring-named horse Barbaro won. But Bluegrass Cat beat out Steppenwolfer. (get your motor runnin…) Seaside Retreat was middling; Sharp Humor second to last – how can that be!
I’d love to cover the Derby with Ralph Steadman – that’d be something.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (Calif.) said in an interview last week that a Democratic House would launch a series of investigations of the Bush administration, beginning with the White House’s first-term energy task force and probably including the use of intelligence in the run-up to the invasion of Iraq.
QUE?
‘probably’
Wtf does probably mean!
This critical issue is KEY to the Yellowgate scandal but more than that it’s political Kryptonite to the claven. Instant political death for the wicked witch of the west Condi Rice. I can see her now…’ Tubes’ Arrgh! I’m melting! Mushroom clouds! Arrgh! I’m melting!’
Probably tells me loud and clear – Pelosi is not up to snuff.
These criminals need killing while they are down – not a hand up and solicitous dust-off.
Fuck this Marquis of Queensbury bullshit!
Unleash the full fury of the force!
Unleash the sheer snark attack!
Snark photon torpedoes!
Snark warp six – engage!
Riesz-
You need a subscription to read that NYTimes article.
cathy – oops. adding single digits, it’s hard work!
Good mornng, all. Drinking my coffee and cathcing up on some reading before a full day of chores.
Barbaro won the Derby, by 6 1/2 lengths.
Love the hummer, my most favorite bird in the world.
Man, I don’t need coffee this morning, I just have to read professor rat!
Bush:
“You know, I’ve experienced many great moments and it’s hard to name the best,” Bush told weekly Bild am Sonntag when asked about his high point since becoming president in January 2001.
I would say the best moment of all was when I caught a 7.5 pound (3.402 kilos) perch in my lake,” he told the newspaper in an interview published on Sunday.
I wonder where catchin’ Saddam comes in ?

The twins preg. tests coming back negative has got to be in the top ten.
My guess is Tom DeLay’s answer about that trip to Scotland and those new e-mails in the Washington Times will be worth the trip to ABC.
I just loved this photo — the hummingbird and the petunia are so clear in it, to the point that you can see the veining of color in the flower. Really beautiful. It’s not quite warm enough here yet for the hummingbirds, but soon we’ll have the little winged jewels flying around all the flowers.

Abso-freakin-lutely!!!
The very same Dem lack of stomach on Iran-contra has led almost DIRECTLY to present nightmare.
Let the viewer beware. Just want to remind everyone that Saxby “Bad Knee” Chambliss, the destroyer of veterans, is the chickenhawk who ran the sleazy campaign against Sen. Max Cleland (D).
Cathy, I don’t have a subscription– I think you just have to register– it’s not much trouble.
Gyro 23 – omg. OMFG.
where are the bounds of this idiot’s cosmic shallowness?
ok, offa here and out in the yard with my own flora – lata y’all.
Speaking of Asclepia…
I have had very bad luck growing Asclepia tuberosa (Butterfly Weed). I suspect it is because it is hard to establish, not much to see the first few years, plus it emerges late in spring, and I give up too soon. I see it growing in wildflower plantings along highways where the Dept of Transportation has reintroduced it. I think the secret is plant it and leave it alone. Not easy to do in a garden!
Now, Asclepia incarnata (Swamp Milkweed) is an all together different story. A few seeds one year turns into an unbelievable patch even the first year, and I cheerfully weed it everywhere I don’t want it.
I have not had much luck with Common Milkweed (Asclepia syriaca)either. Too much shade? Too much competition in a garden setting?
little help please;
I’m trying to find a link with some of the more aggregous signing statements the president has made to circument the laws passed by congress
I heard a bunch on randi roes but there’s no link on her site
thanx in advance
Bush says job market best in years
if you don’t live in Michigan, Ohio, Missouri, Louisiana, Missippi…
Hell, He has a great job, right?
me to me at 31 — There is a link to the signing statements bills in a post I did recently.
Spying at All Time High
The link is about halfway down in the post. It goes to a full compilation of all the 700+ bills that have gotten some form of Presidential signing statement caveat. HTH!
Deborah Howell paints a giant target on her back. Reopens the whole can of worms. Is a glutton for punishment.
Or insert your own metaphor.

Nice to see Timmeh providing all that “balance” of political spectrum, for a change.
Tweety has Laura Ingram on!ARRRGH!
The twins preg. tests coming back negative has got to be in the top ten.
i’m not too sure about that — recall that ‘emergency appendectomy’ jenna had that he couldn’t be bothered to delay his vacation just after he was appointed. what father leaves behind his daughter about to undergo surgery — unless of course, he’s pissed at what the real procedure is.
Oh No She Didn’t
“When I’m the leader…”
In this current climate of decisiveness AND certainty, Pelosi was oh-so careful to be wordily P.C. to the Dem’s intention of control and her position as the Speaker of the House.
Then she pulls this one out…
Good Morning Everyone,
me to me – Boston Globe 4/30/06, I think the reporter’s name was Savage – can’t seem to make the link work, but this kid made a splash with it just last Sunday
thanks as always for the Gorgeous Hummer Christy- and you’ve reminded me of my late dear mother in law – who never had a catty thing to say about anyone – unless they couldn’t get their ‘rhodies’ to bloom (no mean feat in the bay area) but it used to bust me up to hear her June Cleaver snark – look forward to seeing your pics
damn, laura ingraham hit that fucking wall hard. she’s really morphing into female impersonator territory …
The recent White House shake-up was an attempt to jump-start the administration and boost President Bush’s rock-bottom approval ratings, but have those efforts come too late to salvage the presidency? A prominent GOP pollster thinks that may be the case.
“This administration may be over,” Lance Tarrance, a chief architect of the Republicans’ 1960s and ’70s Southern strategy, told a gathering of journalists and political wonks last week. “By and large, if you want to be tough about it, the relevancy of this administration on policy may be over.”
Thought I’d repost this just to test the emotional reactions. My own reaction to it is strangely blase. Yeah- it seems to be true- the Giant Clusterfuck administration is over- dead- with two and a half years left on his sentence. I’m surprised that I’m not more ecstatic about it.
here’s the charles savage article on the signing statements:

NEXT ON “THIS WEEK” ABC”
Governor Howard Dean, will be facing off with Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay in a discussion of rising fuel costs, the upcoming elections, and the war in Iraq.
Here’s some hummingbird pictures my girlfriend and I took on a trip to the southwest last year:

hope you enjoy them
Why oh why must Pelosi be so unprepared when she goes on these shows. She’s simply awful on TV.
Is it too late to get a new minority leader?
CNN’s Reliable Sources about to discuss why “liberal” bloggers view Stephen Colbert as a hero.
Tweety and freinds are taking turns praising Bushe’s comedic act while kicking Colbert, only one of them points out he “set the net on fire” fucking hacks.Oops,’scuse me.
Is it me or is Russert being extra hostile today? Kudos to Pelosi for the “rubber stamp” reference.

You can do serious damage in 1000 days, see Elizabeth’s mother, the biggest queen or king England ever had.
Now we don’t like Pelosi either? What sins has she committed lately. Can she ask for absolution?
Easy read article by Pincus on growing Cong. concerns over DOD Contracting out Intel services – Chair of House Permanent Comm. is Hoekstra – did I miss him ?
If I did, did anyone ask him about’Athena’ ?
It’s Fox, so probably not
and what the hell could Delay possibly have to say – weren’t there some e mails released just this week showing staff concern about his trips to Scotland ?!?!
RummyGoneWild
Whith all that is going on in the world today,Tweety and Co. discuss—The Da Vinchi Code!Perhaps T could get a new job on ET.
Remember;no matter how flawed they may be,don’t shiv the Dems we’ve got.(Leiberman is the exception to that rule)
man, just from a quick scan of the boards’ reactions to the sunday chatterboxes, it’s clear that there’s a major pushback from these cum-sucking whores. i am more and more convinced that some of these pigs were frequent guests of goss’ poker parties.
“Elizabeth’s mother” You mean Anne Bolyn”?
rw at 50 — I like Pelosi, fwiw. She’s working very hard to get the Dem caucus on the same page — no mean feat considering how diverse the caucus is. I don’t always agree with her positions, but she’s definitely sincere on doing the hard work behind the scenes. There is a lot going on that we don’t get to see publicly (some of which I’ve been lucky enough to find out about through the grapevine — and it’s good, tactical stuff). I’m not a “my way or the highway” absolutist when it comes to political positions — I try to take a longer-term view on stuff like that. And in that case, I think Pelosi has done some great work in moving the Dems int he House forward with a much more organized strategy. Helluva lot better than what was going on previously.
Redd- I agree. Nancy’s about as close to a true prospective as will ever be elected in this country- but she still gets sniped at- for not being pure enough.
Sometimes it feels like a fuckin convent round here!
Kurtz is the biggest republican tool out there.
Dems should take note of today’s MTP.
Timmeh was the most aggressive I’ve seen, going after Pelosi. Her response was uneven, at best.
Dems better get tough and get smart. The corporate owned media is not going to give them an even break.
Netizens are going to make or break the 2006 election.
I truly hope Hillary heeds her advisers, and writes off bloggers. That’ll just make it easier to kick her WalMart board-sitting ass, and elect somebody worthwhile, like Feingold!
ANN at 30,
wet feet. Asclepias like wet feet, I agree on the swamp milkweed.
You also need to make sure that there are necter plants near the asclepias to ensure that you get the flutterbys.
Nancy Pelosi — personal grudge I have. I will never forget her ‘letter’ to Howard Dean about the evil word ‘evenhanded.’ Never was a knife so sharp, nor so misplaced, as that knife into Dean.
NEXT ON “THIS WEEK†ABCâ€
Governor Howard Dean, will be facing off with Former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay in a discussion of rising fuel costs, the upcoming elections, and the war in Iraq.
This sounds like it might be worth watching except it’s not on here until 4:00 pm. Does the east coast have it on in the morning?
OfT:
Is Michael Hayden still “General” Hayden? i.e. is he still active-duty? How does that work? Can he be active-duty military and head of the CIA? That doesn’t smell right….
Tom Delay on TeeVee- what is it? A Freak show? Got any sword swallowers and “dog faced boys” on with him?
riez fischer (#14):
are we not ‘dogs?
or be we ‘lakers?
art thee sirius?
mayhap, aquariurs……….
(and all i got was this bloody t-shirt)
Sigh, the repub corporate media whores are in full defense today. But on the up side they have motivated me to finally order Eric Boehlert’s new book, ‘Lapdogs: How the Press Rolled Over for Bush’.
jayt — according to current law, he can be military and head the CIA, it’s just not done. The Senate has a pending bill to limit this, but it hasn’t yet passed, so there is no legal limitation on such an appointment. Just FYI.
rwcole, you called this very development about a month ago – can’t believe I didn’t save your comment then, as I kept going back to it, reading it over and over, like some kid with a rabbit’s foot –
You all but called out Kristol specifically backing away from His Chimpness this week – yeah, the next development would be the Press really turning on him (guess by now we’ve all figured out that would be the editorial types )
And as I said last night, look at the establishment types bashing the Press for their complicity just this week – does that help push them towards more actual investigative reporting – geez – I shoulda asked you who you liked in the Derby yesterday !
I think I know what you’re talking about with regards to feeling blase – I was musing to myself yesterday that Rover’s pending frog march is now a fait accompli instead of the Fitzmas extravaganza we were all hopiing for back in October –
The danger is very great and now my prayers are just please dear God, stop them from any further substatial damage
rwcole-
When I saw that he was going to be on, I wondered the same thing. Why would he dare show his face on TV? But then I remembered that it was Tom Delay.
pelosi is a dreadful minority leader. she offers no leadership — only muddled soundbites of issues of interest at the moment. what she did to jack murtha is unforgiveable. she thoroughly undercut one of the most authentic voices to speak out against the iraq policy, and i am very suspicious if that’s not the reason why — because someone presented a challenge to her authority. pelosi, clinton, schumer — i’m convinced they prefer their minority status. all that money and don’t have to take responsibility for these dreadful policies.
Hoekstra just dropped a bit of a bombshell-He says Hayden would be the exact wrong guy to head the CIA-says the feud between DoD & CIA is the backdrop driving everything in this case
So if Dear Leader W gets stuck regarding his first pick, it’s just another sign that W’s over-arching attempts at gaining as much imperial power as possible is happening at the time he’s least likely to achieve such results
With both W & the GOP subject to infighting of the most harsh kind, and the GOP itself in the process of crashing & burning, it makes the rest of W’s agenda almost a nonstarter
Such as attacking Iran, won’t happen before the election in ANY way, shape or form
Here’s why
The closer such an attack would take place to election day in November, the more likely people will see the purely political calculation at play
But there’s a major disaster waiting if the such an attack on Iran is launched as well-namely, what’s the most obvious US target that Iran could quickly retaliate against in the event of such a preemptive US strike?
The US Troops in Iraq
Karl Rove is an insufferable prig, but even he’s enough of a realist to understand just what constant images of US troops under attack from insurgents, militias & terrorists in training, and then Iranian missiles & troops would do to the GOP at the voting booth
This Administration is already under fire for deliberately sending US troops into combat without enough effective body & vehicle armor, subject to being afflicted with tainted water & food, courtesy of the always US Taxpayer funded Halliburton-For Campaign Contribution Payoff of the most Rapacious kinds
With the spiraling disaster that is Iraq, the last thing this Administration needs is yet another deadly factor for the US troops in Iraq that wasn’t planned for in the least before the occupation, one that the ruling GOP will pay the heaviest political price for on election day
China’s Ascending, US Descending, and as such, China is in a direct position to challenge various aspects of US dominance & hegemony around the globe
China’s also trying to sew up as many energy sources-especially Oil-as possible for the next few decades, and seeing as how China is now one of Iran’s major trading partners, as well as also being the second-largest holder of US Debt-offered at the weekly treasury auctions-China will not be letting the rest of the Bush Jr Administration have it’s way unopposed in every instance
And I’m guessing that there will be more arrests & indictments of GOP figures at both the state & federal levels leading into November as well-Tom DeLay will be one of those individuals, Bob Ney as well, and Please, Dear God, let that scumbag Karl Rove get branded with the scarlet “I” for “indictment”
There’s also no way W hits Iran without a congressional okay-and I don’t see that approval for a preemptive strike coming from either party at this point-Maybe it W’s approval ratings were about 40 points higher, then Iran gets hit without worrying about the congressional nambypambys
When those ratings are in the 30% range however, there’s no Administrative ability to do the big policy thing without congressional approval
Forget “Passion Of The Christ”, the karmic scourging the GOP’s going thorugh right now is only going to get SO much worse by November, and I’m enjoying every single schadenfreude-filled second, couldn’t happen to a more deserving bunch of ultracorrupt cronies & theological thugs
bkny at 70 — contemplate for a moment why it might have been beneficial for Murtha for Pelosi (a SanFran progressive liberal Dem) to publicly distance herself. I think folks need to think more along tactical lines, instead of just looking at how things appear on the surface.
Mwahahahahahaha. Dean on This Week: “I’m not going to get into a debate on values with Tom DeLay.” HAHAHA
King Cranky-
You left out one major future possiblity that could get Bush out of this mess.
Terrorists “sneak” in and bomb us again. Maybe Bush’s lack of interest in securing our borders has an ultimate purpose.
new thread – new DCI
I don’t understand the near beatification of Jack Murtha. Correct me if I am wrong, but I tought I heard him say that the US troops need to withdraw “behind the horizon” or some such thing – and I don’t see how that differs substantially from the permanent bases currently under construction.
Dr. Teller (51): Lay will always have something to say. Too bad Colbert isn’t
the moderator.
Christy and RW: (#58,59). She does have a “media problem”. She’s not tough enough, in person. She’s not quick on her feet. Dean has her, hands down, on these two functions. She may be just fine in the trenches but on the tube she has a problem.
fahrender at 77 — I’ll agree with you there. Having just watched Dean on This Week, he was clear, concise and fantastic. And he made DeLay look like a smarmy ass, which is a plus in my book. *g*
king k (#71),
maybe that’s part of the reason they shoo’d him out of the decider’s treehouse……..
j/r (*76):
murtha’s right, IMHO. getting out of dodge but staying in kansas makes the troops safer, gives them a less stressful environment and serves the purpose of letting the iraqis know that we haven’t simply given up and walked. all of the above are needed. much as i would like to just end it, period, we would be even worse off than we are now, and so would the iraqis. also, we need democrats like murtha. not neccessarily of his military stance but in his upstanding forthrightness. we need more feingolds and conyers and boxers. more, more, more.
I heard Pelosi speak at the Dem convention last weekend (hi johninsacramento!). Dems are on fire, in my state. There was, in some of the smaller gatherings, an open acknowledgement that while the progressives are the heart and soul of the party, the main thing, the ONLY thing that matters right now is re-capturing Congress.
There was a floor challenge to the district endorsement of Jane Harmon in the ‘06 race, based on her position on the war on terra (I love democracy in action!). The speaker for keeping Harmon’s endorsement said, in a passionate voice, “I am against Jane Harmon’s position on Iraq, too. But we need every single Dem in place in ‘06. This is the fight of our lifetime.” This is the mantra.
By the way, the thrill of the convention for me, besides meeting a fellow FDLer, was hearing Max Cleland speak and then getting a hug and kiss from him in the hotel lobby later. Wow. If you ever get a chance to hear him, take it. He’s magnetic.
Christy, if that hummer was serenading you, it might have been an Anna’s – the males love to sing (not that they’re musical, just vocal)! They’re everywhere on the Pacific coast south of the Columbia: the ‘backyard bird’.
Tim Russert hates America
Nancy Pelosi screwed the pooch on TV this morning. Get a better speaker.
Screamin’ at the TV again…Cheney is on.
I like Nancy Pelosi too, but don’t agree with her (or anyone else, for that matter),on everything.
Russert looked like the belligerent pig that he is this morning and I just emailed him to ask him when he’s supposed to collect his Medal of Freedom. Told him that I hope to see him interviewing the Republicans as aggressively as he did Speaker Pelosi this morning.
Pelosi is a very smart woman and had all the facts at her fingertips this this morning – she is not, however Hilary (whom I also like, but don’t support). Pelosi is a woman with a backbone of steel and her candour can be quite disarming, but I believe that is to her advantage. There are a lot of women out in the U.S. loathing Russert after today’s interview and I hope theylet Russert know.
Personally, I would like to see the Democrats supporting their womenfolk more. Democratic women, on the whole thank God, are very very diferent to their Republican counterparts. I would hate it for them to become Republican light.
Jinny 86 “I would hate it for them to become Republican light.”
Amen.
BTW, I can’t copy and paste from others’ posts anymore. Is that natural?
I think Nancy Pelosi looked horrible on Meet The Press. She let Russert batter her, had no comebacks, and fumbled and mumbled her way through. Punted on impeachment, and undercut some of her colleagues! Russert’s shameful attempt to minimize Stephen Colbert’s stinging performance by spending 20 minutes of his show interviewing “fake” Bush, Steve Bridges, was disgusting. The two “journalists” who participated in this sham performance are equally as disgusting. It’s not like we have serious issues to discuss today! Shameful!
Fahrender, I certainly agree with you on Murtha’s personal qualities and plain-spoken approach, and when the whole system is starved for people of his calibre, it’s easy to be less critical of his views than one might if he had been a less appealing person.
Mommiebrain #81: Would this be the convention the weekend California democratic leadership meeting AT&T arranged inside the gates of Pebble Beach? So many conventions/conferences, so little time? Sorry to be so confused – it has been such a breathless spring & kinda hard to keep up.
Christy
Tactics? Since when is showing that you have no convictions a tactic? Do you spend a lot of time in the middle of this country? All they saw this morning was another Democrat that waffles and wants to spend their money. Murtha does fine in Texas, Iowa, and Missouri. They don’t know who the hell Nancy Pelosi is. Maybe I’m wrong, but I think it’s time we had a plain-speaker as a leader.
Stephen, fyi, I live in the middle of this country in WV. Trust me when I say that I ride the ragged edge of blue collar, gun-toting, redneck land. And when I was talking tactics, I was talking about the Murtha issue with regard to bkny’s post — which is why I referenced the post by name and number.
Pelosi was awful as usual. Chairman Dean on the other hand was spectacular as usual. It is criminal that WE let the dinos and the press take him away from us. He should be president right now!!
Christy,
Sorry, I was mad at Nancy, I guess. But I really mean it. The red states don’t know who she is.
God, Russert sure had a hair up his ass. What wrong, Pumpkinhead? Just got done filling up your tank? Geeze, I thought he was going to bite Nancy in the neck. And then dragging out the old Abramoff/Reid BS just was taking the vast emptiness out of the void and trying to put a dress on it. Laughable.
I’m totally conflicted about Nancy. I want to cheer her on. She has some power. I just wish she would use it. I thought she gave a mediocre performance and that’s not good when you’re the leader. And I hate the snively sidehandled dis on Conyers and the nearly off-the-table implication about impeachment. OK, maybe she’s just playing her cards, but that’s just fucking part of the problem. I am not a tea leaf reader (but I am glad we have one here at FDL). You can’t sit there and talk about transparency and ethics and speak in tongues. I like the new Dem mantra but where’s the clarity of substance? She can’t let the media slap her around like that and stammer hey way through the talking points. Do love the new hairdo.
Hillary gives me a complete sinus headache. Eck. She is just not very interesting on any level. The next President is going to need a very big shovel, and I don’t think she has one. Did anyone catch the sneer Steppinoutalot gave Katrina? And Mr. Bow Tie just laughing her out of the room? Looks like the big bad boys version of Get the Guest.
If the Dems nominate Hilary we might as well all go home and pack our bags. Nancy sowed the seeds of defeat this morning. There is no tactic that will win back the house better than speaking the truth. The people are waiting and the Democrats are blowing it.
Gotta run upstairs but am building my EPU credits. I think I’m up to almost a dozen. If I had my own universe it would be the meta universe and this would be my zone. And EPU would be in it along with the null set. Sigh.
Like your hummingbird shot, more bird/butterfly blogging is welcome. We too are filling our outdoor pots today and our goals seem the same, we hope to attract hummingbirds and butterflies. Love Allysium and Pentas for that. Also perrenials phlox and menarda, though they are not really planter fodder. We hear there is a new phlox coming out this year, more a mini version though have not seen it yet. We also get the humming bug (slang), not sure of the real name but its a moth that hovers and darts very much like hummingbirds.

tb, there you go. I have sphinx moths.
Buddleia, Monarda, Asclepias, Phlox is also good.
Re: Nancy Pelosi
And I should be excited about the Democrats taking over BECAUSE?!?
Totoro was a wonderful cartoon. I discovered it in 1994 or 1995. I recently saw in on Cartoon Network and objected to the new voices. Not big on change, except for regime change in the US.
Anne Holliday:
Naw, this wasn’t the corporate retreat that kept Boxer from attending – it was the state party nominating convention at the convention center in Sacto. Lots of parallel demonstrastions that weekend.
Lots Get Out of Iraq Now signs and street theatre surrounded the convention. The LaRouchies, who totally confuse me, blanketed the convention with people and song. Really. They had choruses every day, good singers singing arrangements with words of their own, all about the moral bankruptcy of politicians. Can anyone explain the LaRouche message to me? I’ve tried to read their pamphlets, but it seems such a mess of truth and bullshit, with bullshit/paranoia winning most paragraphs, that I just give up.
The big draw of the convention was the impeachment forum led by Mike Malloy. Almost 1,000 passionate people spilled out of the theatre onto the streets.
Oops–EPU’d:
I just finished watching Rep. Pelosi speak about the Democratic strategy for November on Meet the Press.
The response to questions about Iraq still sounds weak. It needs to be clear that this problem was created and exacerbated by the Bush Administration alone. The response should sound something more like:
“THE IRAQ WAR WAS NEVER GOING TO HAVE A HAPPY ENDING. ANY CHANCE THAT IT WOULD HAVE WAS BLOWN BY THE MISMANAGEMENT OF THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION IN THE FIRST 2 YEARS OF THE WAR. THERE WILL NOT BE A GOOD OUTCOME AT THIS POINT AND NO ONE REALLY EXPECTS ONE. THE DEMOCRATS ARE MERELY TRYING TO CUT OUR LOSSES.â€
The Dems are still letting the media make this the Democrats’ fault somehow.
Katrina’s (nicknamed “Hurricane” by George Will, for actually uttering an opinion) not particularly charismatic, but she stirs the pot. Doesn’t she realize the pundit business is about knowing everything, ignoring half of it, and telling a quarter of it?
Dean didn’t get a nickname, but Stephanopoulos laughed nervously about the DNC Chair’s unabashedness.
Speaking of Stephanopoulos, I thought eunuch’s were supposed to grow fat and get a high voice.

My favorite hummer patio (other than my own, which I love for its convenience):
Bandelier Nat’l Monument in New Mexico (short drive from Santa Fe). They are so thick there, some people might think they have to shoo them from their table.
2nd favorite: Any porch with flowers in Rocky Mountain Nat’l Park. Mainly for the surroundings.
So you think maybe Pelosi said that so George and Dick won’t automatically bomb Iran as soon as the GOP loses the House and Senate?
To say that Nancy Pelosi did a horrible job would be an understatement. Like so many she is following the advice that she should not actually say anything, but rather let the Republicans implode. Jesus she wouldn’t even say that were the Dem’s to take the house that they would repeal Bush’s tax cuts.
This absence of a stand will come back to bite the party in the ass. Thank god for Feingold and the few others that have the gumption to say what they actually stand for.
Did anyone watch the Scott McClellan farewell piece on This Week and notice the flak jacket he displayed, which is traditionally passed on from one press secretary to the next? Now, I recall that, when the Bushies first moved into the White House, one of the most heinous accusations they leveled at the departing Clinton staff when they accused them of trashing the place was that they had absconded with that very same flak jacket. I guess the Bushies figured no one would remember after six years so that it was safe now to bring the jacket out of Karl Rove’s closet…
