I think Bob Adams was one of the first commenters ever on this site, and he has been a regular community member ever since. Bob is also a Connecticut resident, an enthusiastic Ned Lamont supporter, and today he scored big with his new blog Connecticut Bob and a post he did about Bush’s favorite Democrat, Joe Lieberman who recently told rape victims to (literally) take a hike:
Lieberman said he believes hospitals that refuse to give contraceptives to rape victims for "principled reasons" shouldn’t be forced to do so.
"In Connecticut, it shouldn’t take more than a short ride to get to another hospital," he said.
Well Joe, that’s not very helpful. I mean, I know that you’ll never need emergency contraception at two o’clock in the morning after having been brutally raped. So I guess it’s easy for you to disregard any woman who is unlucky enough to have gone through that trauma.
Bob decided to make a graphic explanation to the compassion challenged Senator and show him with maps (visual aids are always helpful for the slow learners) that the distance between emergency rooms was not so short as Holy Joe blithley asssumed. Providing a rape victim is in any condition to climb up off a gurney and pull themselves together for the journey, Bob has maps showing that it would take between a half hour and an hour to walk to a hospital that provided emergency contraception.
Bob has also been making some fabulous videos for Ned, hanging out with other great Connecticut bloggers and generally doing A-plus work to unseat Holy Joe.
And if you don’t know what slogan on his t-shirt means, well, you haven’t been around here as long as Bob Adams.

Yay Bob! Joe must Go!
Fitz O’Rama
Bob looks a friendly sort indeed!
Great shirt!
Gosh, does Bob Adams need a date?
I was just EPU’d. I’m not going to cut and paste this time, though.
Congrats, Bob. Good use of visual aides, too.
OH, JUST GREAT!
How the hell am I supposed to get to sleep NOW, Jane?
hee-hee…you make my week!
Always enjoy Bob’s posts, and three cheers for his work in CT. The Senate needs Ned Lamont, and so does the Democratic party.
The map was a brilliant idea – it will really keep those blindingly ignorant Lieberman comments front and center; I’m betting there will be a lot of Connecticut voters who won’t need maps to find their precincts on primary day.
Way to go, Bob!
Damn, I looked like that about 10 years ago. Maybe shorter, fatter, grayer and… well, he has a jaw. But dude, we could be twins. :-)
oh my goodness, I just took a tour around your website and see you are a sailor and it made me soooo homesick. I used to race out of Stamford Yacht Club for many years. Cheers! You have a beautiful boat, too.
Bob rocks.

I think it needs the FDL flame in the background behind the text
“Everything burns but paper don`t crash” – jimfl@tensegrity.net
TRex- brother Patrick just had to sign off on previous thread, bec. it was EST, y’know. Can we call him a wimp? (Okay, he had an exciting day).
And Bob Adams, thanks for all of your previous comments on FDL. A while back I posted a link to an article I found about Lamont hiring a new PR firm (?)- I was sceptical at first, but FDLers told me that this person/ firm does great ads. Sorry, can’t find link right now, but I assume you know what I am talking about. What do you think about this? Don’t remember having seen a comment from you re: this.
Nighty night. Bob Adams, you’ll be in my dreams tonight, sigh. What an amazing community we’ve got here, beautiful snark Bob. If you’re gay please keep it under your hat for a while, OK?
I just got in from my trip. I have a lot of reading to do.
So Joey bag o’donuts must have Alzheimer’s if he is planning to enact “scavenger hunts” to knock on hospital doors so they can cross EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTIVES off their list.
If an emergency doctor refuses to treat the patient due to religious priorities, shouldn’t a hospital provide an alternative physician in order to fulfill the patient’s needs immediately, and: If not, shouldn’t the hospital be investigated along with a review of their license?
Hey, Joe….I sent your check via scavenger hunt. Good luck finding it. I gotta read…
I love Bob’s shirt. I already took a look at Bob’s new boat. If you only had it up here, Bob, say Prince William Sound? We could keel-haul Joe, eh?
Just got home from giving my last finals today. I think I’ll crack open a Grolsh and catch up at FDL. Uh oh, what’s that nine-nch stack of term papers staring at me?
I managed to watch Secretary of Inept Defense and worse offense on TV at lunch. God, he is so smarmy.
Hi Bob,
What a small world – I live in Danbury.
Glad Lamont is doing so well – looks like he really has a chance. Great video, btw
Would love to get rid of Nancy Johnson, too.
op99 – what was that last part supposed to mean? I object!
angie, you a fellow racing sailor! the fuck!
i’d jump the fence ‘n hit ya bob, mean that in the most respectful political way!
GOD let’s consign Joementum to the dustbin!
ok really goodnight y’all, mean it
And if you don’t know what slogan on his t-shirt means, well, you haven’t been around here as long as Bob Adams.
I’m waiting for the day when EPU’d threads become like underground salons where the hipper-than-thou FDLers hang out and chat once the crowd has moved on.
Or maybe that’s already happened…
Kudos!!! Great work :)

Help Impeach Today Everybody!!!
Amazing. And…. ummmm…. you could probably get some more $$ for Ned putting that shirt at auction ;-))
Assuming, of course, a replacement is easy to come by.
What an inspiration.
Jane- is Bob married? Please send ans. by email and please delete this post after you read it .
Bob, this is completely encouraging for Ned and for the country. Yippeee. Lieber is going down, down, down.
I so want one of those T-shirts. You haven’t lived until you’ve been EPU’d a few dozen times.
Does anyone else think it would be nice to hear a Feingold speech right about now? You know, about a half hour of really connecting all those hundreds of dots……
Bob’s great post goes well with this hopeful diary from Kos today:
Lamont within striking distance
http://www.dailykos.com/storyo…..2633/41560
Way to go Bob. There is a fellow in my town named Bob Adams. There was another guy named Dave Adams and his nickname was Eggdog.
I never heard the full story for why he was called Eggdog, but at some point in his late thirties he started to tell people to call him Dave.
On the tragedy front. Rumsfeld and Bush bring their death and mayhem to NH. 21 year old killed in Al Anbar this week. What a damn waste.
http://www.nbcsandiego.com/new…..etail.html
Also, looks like the religious forces of intolerance are on the march in Iraq. Reports of a 14 year old boy killed for gayness.
Heckuva job Dink-Feld and Shrubby.

Yeah! I think I am going to get a T-shirt like that made too! How cool! We do have the coolest community on the net IMHO! Jane and Christy are so awesome! I get a warm fuzzy feeling every time I read their awsomely funny and insightful posts!
So I was convinced finally to join KOS to recommend the anti-attack Iran diary! Good call! I am so glad to know about that resolution. We must avoid further war of choice. Bushco is criminal…must stop the bleeding.
OMG so glad to have this website so I can feel the comradere of all you good people. Sometimes it is hard living in post-Katrina NO with so few paying attention to what is going on in our greater world. Thanks….thanks…thanks. You are all forever in my heart!
I always come in late to FDL conversations, and may in fact hold a good place in the overall EPU standings as a result. I’ve finally had to rule that if there are more than 70 or so comments, it’s not worth chiming in. On the other hand, Swopa may be on to something….
Bob’s a hottie. Yep.
I cannot believe that Lieberman said that. He always had something of a tin ear, but this just takes the prize.
I’d like to point out a very lively and related discussion over at AmericaBlog. John has asked the question “With the congressional elections 6 months away, is it time for us to stop criticizing Democrats?”
There are a very wide range of responses.

and, the kos dairy says: Meanwhile, Connecticut Bob gives CT rape victims a convenient walking map between hospitals. It’s necessary, because Lieberman said … let me just pull up the quote:
Did Lieberman really say that? Rape victims should sort of shop around for hospitals? Has he ever, you know, been to a hospital? It’s not like they give you menus. Man, I can’t wait for my Uncle Fristy Freedom Rebate so I can send it to Lamont. Assuming they haven’t changed it to Uncle Fristy Freedom IOUs.
So, who was the first person to use EPU as a verb?
T Rex, wasn’t it you?
MsAnnaNola, I don’t know how you do it, but please keep your spirits up and keep on. A close friend of mine is there, and though you must feel like this country has abandoned you, we have not. This will go down as one of the saddest events in our nation’s history. I can’t bear to think of how all this happened. Thank you for your inspiration.
Valley Girl (13) — was that new PR firm/dude for Lamont named Hillman?
Swopa (20) — is that a hint or a suggestion? ;-) I actually thought the ends of abandoned threads were where the trolls hung out, being ill-equipped to take us on au courant.
So after Lieberman’s forced retirement, what will he do? Will he become one of the pundits on Fox, maybe make a niche for himself bad-mouthing President Feingold? What? Will he become some crazy guy, wandering the streets of Hartford jibber-jabbering to himself, and insisting that the other street people call him Mr Vice President?
Ed n Sted (29) — NO. Avarosis didn’t say that, did he? After all the hissiness about Dean and the DNC this week, he said THAT??
Sheesh.
I gotta’ hit the hay, falling back into the bad habit of staying up too late on FDL. Was a big day, too; my son got to shake hands with Governor Granholm after she picked him out of the crowd to have a chat with him. He said he wasn’t going to wash his hand ever again. Aw, he was soooo cute, a progressive political groupie born. Niters!
So, who was the first person to use EPU as a verb?
T Rex, wasn’t it you?
No, I don’t think I coined EPU as a verb. Musta been Marky.
Bob, it seems you have quite a growing fan club here. I remind all you bitchez that I asked first. Don’t mess with me. My vocabulary is registered with the FBI as a lethal weapon.
VG 18, you know, when you think this might be the one, and it turns out they’re not on your team, not that there’s anything wrong with that.
EdNSted – until they can prove you wrong, its never time to stop criticizing.
Maps were excellent idea, Bob. Kudos.

You have my pity. My giant stack of term papers is done. Done! Now all that’s left is the nightmarish entering of the grades in the clumsy university software. But that’ll be almost a relief.
meta@32
I hope you are right about that. We need all the help we can get just to have a city at all. So many have lost so much. I am happy to be part of the rebuilding effort. Where to start though, what comes first the homes or the businesses? This disaster is quite frankly, completely unprecedented. Guliani himself has said so in the last couple of days. Saving the history and culture of this great city should be a national priority. I have been a lifelong Dem. Decided in high school that Rethugs were to hypocritical for me, couldn’t stomach it. So IMO not much is going to happen while Rethugs can gain the state of Louisiana on the electoral map by denying aid to New Orleans. There is too much incentive for them to withold aid IMO. Witness two Dems in the runoff for New Orleans Mayor. Got to love the open primary system. I know it get lots of flack but in Democratic New Orleans it is actually a good thing. So many here are focused on “change” perhaps for change’s sake because Nagin embarrassed himself. In this case open primary system works for us because we have two Dems in the runoff and we get to choose. We don’t have to hold our noses and vote for the Rethug. I am a little happy about that but it does make voting more complicated sometimes.
In any case, thanks for the well wishes. I am hoping some of the Karma we have from all you good people will help us save our city and make it even better. We were never perfect but we were always unique. I have always liked the uniqueness of this city. It is a strength that helps us and sustains us through these tough times. There are many that have left because they were not invested. They were from New York or Omaha or Cincinatti. They were here because they could be, and when the going got tough they left. Well I am here to tell you that we, the real Louisiana people… we’re not going anywhere. We have wonderful food, music, family oriented culture and we overwhelmingly love our city and our culture warts and all. Ok off soapbox…thanks for listening. I have trouble not going off on New Orleans in this day and age. If every city in America was like New Orleans I would not be nearly as determined to save it, but the fact of the matter is few places in the world, let alone the USA have what we have here in New Orleans. New Orleans is a national treasure and we must save it. It is historic, unique and charming. OK…really off soapbox now..really!!!!
Angie, and Sharkbabe, and Bob.
I grew up in stamford. About 2 blocks from the SYC. (123 Stamford Ave. Bill Buckley lived 6 houses away)
Small world.
Now I live in Montauk, LI. Do more shark fishing than sailing. Small world again?

c’est deja fait. J i O, among others, tends to willfully straggle in EPUpia, waxing poetic. It’s worth a visit back in the time machine.
cleter,
fortunately, after I use the ruler to line up all the rows and add up the grades in my handwritten grade book, a couple of people take it from there.
So, Jane, is it time to send Ned another $20?
great work, Connecticut Bob.
Joe-b-Gon.
love the T-shirt.

MsAnnaNOLA 40 –
Tonight on the 10PM news on KMGH Channel 7 Denver, one of the anchors presented a long video diary of his most recent trip back to NOLA, and his family home in St Bernard Parish(?)
It was very moving, and his outrage was obvious. The only good news was that the Industrial Canal levee has been repaired; beyond that, not much.
But no one — other than the BushCo White House — has forgotten. Saving NOLA and saving the country are two fronts in the same war.
If you Google ‘EPU’d’ the first hit is a link to Bob’s OTHER blog – Future DV. I feel like George Takei with a scar. You know you want it Uhura!
just popping in to wave hello – working hard on the media stuff for YKOS and getting very excited by the folks who want to cover the convention – it’s going to be amazing and the MSM is eager to come see what the blogoshere looks like in real life.
I liked the comments at the americablog discussion ed n sted mentioned that say that if the dems were doing a good job there’d be no reason to criticize them so maybe they should change their behavior rather than us change our comments
and now heading for bed … good night dear people
So after Lieberman’s forced retirement, what will he do?
Write a Regnery bodice ripper with a title like “Democrats: Party of Traitorous Baby-Eaters” and wail at length about how the “guerilla wing” of his party sold him out to cater to Those Disgusting Ill-Mannered Dangerous Bloggers. (Oh, how sharper than a serpents tooth, it is to have an Ungrateful Party!) After All That He’s Done for the Democrats!
He will go on to take credit for “legitimizing” Al Gore’s candidacy in 2000 (”He would never have won the popular vote if it wasn’t for me! What did he have? The environment? Nobody cares about that shit! It was all about ME!”). He will insist that no one took Democrats seriously in history ever until he joined the Party, and then in the same breath, he will bemoan that the Dems have been hijacked by a “wild, fringe element” and proclaim that he is deeply, deeply worried about the direction of a Once Great Party.
Then he will apppear on all the talking head shows to sling mud at whoever gets the nod in ‘08. He and Joe Klein will both be authoring hit pieces in Time and the WaPo about These Awful New Democrats and how we’re bad for America. The two of them will do more to undermine the Progressive movement than Fox news and the RNC combined. (Thanks in advance, guys!)
Yes, I have a crystal ball.

Speaking of senators that should be shown the door:

Wow. Here are some great poll numbers for Sen. Conrad Burns (R-MT). Fully 29% of Montana voters believe he deserves to be reelected. Says GOP pollster Whit Ayres, who is working for Burns Republican primary opponent, Bob Keenan, and conducted the poll: “That is among the lowest ‘deserves re-election’ percentages we have recorded for an incumbent in a quarter-century of polling.”

I’ll be interested to see what themes emerge from the YKOS attendees. Kos seems to have his finger on the pulse of more of the ‘mainstream’ Democrats.
A lot of strong opinion emerged over on the Aravosis thread but my guess is that the Aravosis regulars are bit more disinfranchised than most. I could be wrong though. I certainly count myself among the disinfranchised.
Also, the participants over at AmericaBlog seem to be of many different minds on many issues so there is always a bit of underlying tension that John uh, ‘cultivates’ on occasion (The recent Cynthia McKinney Wars there are a good example. Lots of strong feelings on both sides of the fence – mostly honest disagreements as opposed to trolls)
Notwithstanding, I’ve seen much of the same sentiments expressed over on Eschaton/Atrios so I’m very curious to see what happens at YKOS. I’d love to go but it’s simply not in the budget so I’ll be looking for those who do attend to keep the rest of us up to date!
G’Nite
You said it better than I, ck. And MsAnnaNOLA, there will be a better day.
Bush has flatly refused to help Sacramento repair its levee system, which is very fragile at this point. So no, the lessons have not been learned at all. We were probably a couple of rainstorms away from having a levee system break. Really frightening.
OT, but – What does “EPU’ed” mean?
ck @46
Thanks. St. Bernard…whoa bad news down there but those folks are even more pathalogical than New Orleans folks. I went with my boss to one guy’s house (structral inspection) it was eerie. He was the only one in the subdivision on the way to rebuilding. Even more eerie he didn’t raise his house an inch. Still slab on grade 0 inches above grade..yikes…little nutty. He seemed like a normal guy. There are thousands of families wondering what to do? What comes first the levees or the money or the new job? What makes you stay and what makes you go? I am a renter who did not flood so I am in a different position than almost everyone. I don’t envy what they are going through. It is very very tough.
I get very emotional thinking about all these folks. One thing that I have realized of late is this affects everyone in our city. Many from out of state don’t understand that because of the media coverage that focused almost exclusively on the lower 9th ward and the poor areas. There are just as many well off people affected by this. I am on a non-profit board of directors. One of the doctors on our board had his house ruined. He and his wife are well off but they are up in age and this is extremely hard for them. He has resigned from our board so he can work on rebuilding. I am so glad they are rebuilding but I can’t help but think how difficult this must be for them. They have done so much and given so much to the community and now they are struggling like most. And they have the resources to rebuild. What about all the elderly who didn’t have insurance. Yikes! That is a scary thought.
Anyway thanks to you guys for keeping us all in your thoughts and when we take back this country we can do more for those who have lost so much. We can make this an opportunity for growth and innovation instead of having people begging to have some sort of city left. As you all have, we have paid our taxes we have contributed to the treasury through our natural resources and our sweat. All cities and states should be assisted in times of extreme crisis, furthermore this was a failure of the federal government. The levees that failed were built by the Corps of Engineers. They were the reason people built these houses where they did. They should not be penalized for believing their government (however rediculous that may seem at this moment)(snark intended). Ok off soapbox…again. Must fight FDL addiction and go to bed soon!
Mary Lou:
I believe the acronym means “Evil Parallel Universe” and refers in some way to being left all alone on dying thread because a newer thread has been posted and everyone has moved to that thread.
Did I get that roughly right?
OT -
Newsflash: Rumsfeld directs security not to remove questioner.
I’m listening to the NPR gush on Rummy facing the big bad protesters today.
I also heard NPR say (roughly) “Ray McGovern, who said he was a CIA”….
[note to NPR: my local NPR affiliate KALW airs programs simply identifying McGovern as ex-CIA.]
The NPR hourly gush-up made special note of Herr Rumsfeld’s forbearance in directing the ubiquitous security goons “let him speak”.
As opposed to being “escorted” away. [If you or I “escort” someone by forcing them to move from one place to another, the act is known is “kidnapping”…]
This all happened in the “Question And Answer” exchange.
Wow – what mercy. Rummy didn’t allow the CIA veteran to be dragged away for asking questions during a question and answer period.
What’s next – Cheney won’t let Halliburton charge us for using air?
I don’t know which is sadder – the craven ambitious journos who see the lies and keep silent, or the truly dumbfuck journos who still drink the briefing kool-aid.
Gee, the Secretary of the Department sworn to use deadly force to protect the Constitution commands “let him speak” -
and this makes news?
What the fuck have these evil people – in office, on camera, in the boardroom, and in the torture chamber – what have these evil people done to make us supplicants in our own country?
And what it does mean when daring to ask questions of Cabinet officers makes the national hourly news?
[PS - note the spin in the header and news coverage. The CIA Analyst “Heckled” by asking questions when called on in the question and answer period? Great suck-up, AP editors]

Rumsfeld Heckled by Former CIA Analyst
By SHANNON McCAFFREY, Associated Press Writer
Thursday, May 4, 2006
(05-04) 20:09 PDT ATLANTA, (AP) –
Protesters repeatedly interrupted Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld during a speech Thursday and one man, a former CIA analyst, accused him of lying about Iraq prewar intelligence in an unusually vociferous display of anti-war sentiment.
“Why did you lie to get us into a war that caused these kind of casualties and was not necessary?” asked Ray McGovern, the former analyst, during a question-and-answer session.
“I did not lie,” shot back Rumsfeld, who waved off security guards ready to remove McGovern from the hall at the Southern Center for International Studies.

Ed & Mary Lou,
That’s about right, but its when you’re left all alone after posting a long, well thought out comment that noone will ever read because they’ve moved up.

This whole thing is outrageous. It just goes to show you how opressed we really are. It is news that someone, anyone got a chance to ask tough questions because they try their damnest to keep this from happening. WTF? Seriously, open forum and question and answer period. It is not as though Ray interuped the speech itself. It was “Question and Answer Period” the fact that so many are spinning it as heckling is so telling. They are capitulating to BushCo. When Dems regain control we must push to end Media consolidation. This is a horrible thing that has transpired. Every little thing helps. That is of course if there is such a thing as a fair election left in the USA. (Happily when I voted for mayor it was not on a Diebold machine!)
Sorry for all the typos. I am getting sleepy I guess. Goodnight all you good people!
How happy that I can type and the comments are not slow! Oh to have it this fast all the time!
Oh, I hate to admit it, but it appears I must concede the pony to someone else. Chimp’s JAR hasn’t dipped to the 20’s and tomorrow is Cinco de Mayo. I was so sure…….
If a rape victim leaves a hospital before a rape kit is completed, evidence is lost. Lieberman’s suggestion theoretically may help a rapist escape detection. Ideally, a woman should be referred to a facility that provides a SART (sexual assault response team). The MAP (morning after pill) may be taken up to 5 days after unprotected sexual intercourse, and sooner than later.
Hey MsAnnaNOLA -
Bless you and good luck to you and all you love in NO. Lots of my medic firneds have gone down to the Common Ground clinic (and other clinics and efforts) there after Katrina. They describe total neglect of the locals, but great hope in community and collaborative efforts.
I hope all the support needed comes to NO soon – and I hope that doesn’t mean evacs after the next cat 2.
I’m so awed you find the energy for activism ‘midst all there is to do in NO.
Thanks!
L’EPU est moi!
Ed n Stedd – Why the disrespect? Do you really want to piss off an EVIL universe? You treat me as if I am not even here in this universe.
SWOPA – J i O at times creates the “EPU Zone” in prior threads once the party’s moved on, keeping one step ahead of the langoliers.

OT…Saturday morning Mars trines Uranus and is opposed by the moon…effects are strongest over Washington…look for something completely unexpected there…
I got this off Froomkin, but it’s so revealing. Our president doesn’t understand how a municiple water supple works:
Jeffrey Jones writes for Reuters: “President George W. Bush angrily demanded a fire he spotted in flood-ravaged New Orleans from aboard Air Force One be put out immediately, according to excerpts of a new book attacking top government officials for the confusion following Hurricane Katrina. . . .
“[Douglas] Brinkley, an author and historian at Tulane University, quotes Congressman William Jefferson, a Louisiana Democrat, describing Bush viewing the damage from aboard Air Force One five days after the storm. He said Bush asked Homeland Security Chief Michael Chertoff about a fire in the city.
“Chertoff explained that fire departments were struggling in the aftermath of the hurricane and having difficulty extinguishing blazes because water pressure was too low.
” ‘Put the fire out, now! There is water everywhere. I want the fire out,’ Bush was quoted as yelling.”
Shouldn’t that be “l’EPU, c’est moi?” Apologies to Flaubert.
My biggest problem with Gore in 2000 was Lieberman. I realize he was there to woo the Florida vote, mais, quand meme . . . . Oh No Joe continues to be a major problem.
c’est moi – yeah, but, you know….
leaving you with this, from washingtonpost.com via raw story:
The Fox News Effect
By Richard Morin
Thursday, May 4, 2006; A02
We report. You decide. Does President Bush owe his controversial win in 2000 to Fox cable television news?
Yes, suggest data collected by two economists who found that the growth of the Fox cable news network in the late 1990s may have significantly boosted the Republican Party’s share of the vote in the 2000 election and delivered Florida to Bush.
“Our estimates imply that Fox News convinced 3 to 8 percent of its audience to shift its voting behavior towards the Republican Party, a sizable media persuasion effect,” said Stefano DellaVigna of the University of California at Berkely (sic) and Ethan Kaplan of Stockholm University….
alas, the medium is the mass edge

The giant bloated Alien creature was snorting in quiet fury yet it waved away the smaller aliens that were closing in on Jane Riply and Redd Newt who began to slowly back away.
Just then one of the huge green slimy football like eggs chose just that moment to ‘ hatch’. A dark shadow briefly appeared to cross the usually placid face of first Lieutenant Ripley and her fearsome pulse-rifle suddenly lit up like a flamethrower.
( To be epu-inued )
Lieberman should shut his f***ing mouth. Thanks for telling us what people say and do (ala Jon Stewart and Olberman – and unlike anyone else in the media).
He should be put in the stockade for that, never mind being a Senator.
What next Joemento? Tom Cruise at the hospital holding back treatment based on his religion – or how about the reverse and you can get strapped down and given electro-shock therapy?
Yeah leave it up to tools like you Joe to lord over people… really gives you perspective on how me must lord over people when he is writting laws.
Never be President…Never be President.. no Joe your never going to be President. And if you want to be VP for Bush go for it idiot.
Bob looks alot like my old man, they could be taken for brothers easily.
Those maps are fantastic on his site, wouldn’t they look great in a trifold type ‘flyer’ for a PDF download? Hand them out, leave stacks all over, deliver a big stack to Joe’s office. If that’s not a strong enough statement for them what’s it’s going to take? A trail of big red bloody paint drips between hospital routes to mark the way?
For what it’s worth I haven’t been around long enough to know what EPU’d means. But I do know that the fact no one bothers to clue an ignorant soul like myself in is why progressives lose elections.

Dear Jane and friends – come with me into the twilight zone if you will. Richard Armitage volunteers to slit throats and smuggle dope for the Nugan-Hand. Years later he comes to Australia claiming that we must ‘ get our hands dirty’ in any war with China.

Lieberman is now pimping for the Iran War, too. And what about that news that FEMA is now considered totally dysfunctional? Doesn’t Joe share oversight responsibility with the Senator from Maine? What have you been doing, Joe?

Thanks everybody, for the really nice words. I’m blushing so hard it hurts!
We’re fighting an uphill battle here against Joe, and we really need all the help we can get. If you haven’t yet (or want to again), please donate to Ned Lamont via the ActBlue Page, and be a part of history in the making.

The ‘ Waffen SS’ Vs the ‘ Wermacht’ split must run right through the entire government sector methinks. Finally the ‘ Impi’ technique is being talked about at Counterpunch and Antiwar.com
Both the Left and Right must unite for this fight. Keep the faith and pass the ammo as a wise man once said and oh, hey…may the snark be with you.
OT – But just read a very interesting piece entitled:
Judy Miller, Stephen Hatfill and Mobile Weapons Labs — an article written by Lukery/Australia dated 5/04. I found the article on buzzflash and there are comments and discussion by emptywheel and others very well informed.
I learned a great deal. Now back to the subject at hand.
Just want to give three cheers of support. Yay Bob Adams! If all CT residents worked so hard to deconstruct Joe, those poll numbers would take a dive in the direction of Bush&Co.
Professor Rat – no, I don’t know Vita Behn, who is it?
Also, I couldn’t find the FireDogLake link to ActBlue so I put up the Ned Lamont link. Here’s the FDL link, so you can donate to Ned under the FDL banner – FDL ActBlue Page.
And I must also thank Christy for everything; she works tirelessly and has helped us understand some complex legal issues. It’s an honor to read her wonderful insights.

L’EPU, est moi! And you’re a hero here in the Zone, EPU.
Oh, and SWOPA, the EPU’d Zone creates itself. It’s a byproduct of the headlong rush of the commentariat to the next FDL exciting installment. I just exploit the space cause, mostly, I hate crowds.
In addition, I just occupy the Late Nite FDL EPU’d Zone, and, yes, it’s partialy to keep the Langoliers from consuming too much of time passed. (How does Stephen King think up all this stuff!)
So, now, everyone charge ahead to the once future thread!

OK, I’ve gone back in time to , the first Late Nite FDL I can find. (There’s a strange empty place there from March 1 back to the end of January.) I’ve placed the first segment of the EPU’d Zone archives there.
They’re awaiting moderation so someone will no doubt notice and pass the word along to TPTB.
It’s an example of what can be done with the space left over when a comment thread goes dormant. I’ll have more examples in future posts here from the EPU’d Zone.
–
OK the link didn’t take, and sometimes preview sucks.
Here’s the link to the EPU’d Zone Archives.

“And if you don’t know what slogan on his t-shirt means, well, you haven’t been around here as long as Bob Adams. “
what happened to trying to be a bit more inclusive to lurkers and first time visitors? That statement almost seems condescending!
Ed N Sted
It was talked about a while back that there should be someplace where all FDL turns ‘o words and cult phrases could be stashed.
Well there is, if anyone would care enough to exploit it.
Simply choose a comment thread long since dormant (I prefer that term to the dying death-of-a-thread type talk) and start posting a Glossary of EPU Terms and other FDL Culture Things.
And then, periodically so newbies can see it, post the durn link in a current comment thread!
And everyone could contribute to boot!
There’s lots of things to do with FDL’s EPU’d Zone.
–
I’ve started a Glossary of EPU Terms and other FDL Culture Things.
It’s located in the March 10, Late Nite FDL’s EPU’d Zone. The first term I explain and link to is TPTB.
Go check it out.
–
Link to Glossary of EPU Terms and other Culture Things
There that should work. Like I said preview sometimes sucks.
–
Ed N Stead has made his first entry into the Glossary “JAR”
Good on ‘ya Ed. Now if other old time threadstirs took the time, we’d have a welcome to FDL page, Glossary and anything else someone wants to create.
Pick an EPU’d Zone and blogsquat. Pay rent by making a contribution of talent and time.
Or not. It’s just an experiment anyway.
–
Scratch “Stead” should have typed “Sted”.
Yep, I haven’t been around here as long as Bob Adams. But I have been around here long enough to note a slide into “in-group self-congratulation.” At one point in the blogs there was much sneering and jeering at the elite media pundits as wanting to be part of the “Kool Kids,” and unwilling to take stands that might jeopardize that. I took it that the Kool Kids so valued their in-group status that they no longer spoke to people outside that group. More and more on Firedoglake I note little in-jokes and in-group references incomprehensible to the reader who doesn’t “join” fully. Is that the direction you really want to go? Or am I mistaken?
A month or so ago, I was super-frustrated by not being able to find out what EPU meant. (I even asked my PC-whiz son, who was running relays for Fidonet back in the day, who didn’t have a clue.) I even looked it up in Acronym finder (Electronic Program Message had potential but it didn’t clear anything up.) :-]
I was getting desperate, and as a net user since 1994 (via Lynx and Netscape v1), and one who is known for unrelenting searches, that’s not a good thing for me.
Then I thought: You know, I’ve really only seen the term on the blogs–not thinking of just this one–so I entered it into Technorati, and VOILA! — up popped Bob’s blog entry about the history of the EPU at FDL, along with the T-shirt photo. I was so happy to have found what I needed! I thanked Bob profusely and he kindly responded.
So count me in as Bob Adams fan! – Madam_Deb
LeisureGuy let me be the first to welcome you to the EPU’d Zone, blogging’s New Frontier. Just look behind you, EPU’d Zones as far as the link can go.
The group you seem to have some difficulty with has moved on. Humans do all sorts of funny things when they get together, not the least of which is haze, or worse, ignore the newbie.
I can go back to any archived EPU’d Zones and leave any comment, or reply to someone downthread to my heart’s content.
So, ignore the crowd. Hang in the Zone.
–
Madam_Deb feel free to post any unique to FDL term you find on technorati or anywhere else in the Glossary of EPU Terms and other Culture Things. See above for link.
–
Sure glad nobody’s around to see my silly mistakes. LOL
I should ammend that link thusly:
Glossary of FDL Terms and Other Culture Things
There that’s better.
–
Unfortunately the group that is taking up in-group references includes the authors of the blog–and it seems to me that this direction is both undesirable and unnecessary. The information and insights they have to offer are valuable to many beyond an in-group, and I hate to see them begin to address only the in-group. Why not write in such a way to maximize accessibility bye the new reader? Because it wouldn’t be cool?
Here’s another thing the FDL commentariat could do with EPU’d Zones.
A discussion, dispute, OT distraction, whatever, could be taken “outside”, meaning that an obscure EPU’d Zone could be used as a virtual “conference room” where those interested in pursuing the issue could meet.
It’s just an experiment.
–
Oh, oh! the FDLangoliers are chewing up EPU’d Zone comment spaces! Time has ceased to exist in that EPU’d Zone. *sniff-sniff*
They’re closing the comments threads.
I suppose it’s time to round up my supporter and launch a march against the tyranny. I guess.
–
LeisureGuy in any scramble to the top, or head-long rush to the next thread to plant the Fitz! flag, there’s going to be a dynamic of elbows attracting people that like that dynamic.
I’m experimenting with the idea that the EPU’d Zone at the end of everyday’s Late Nite FDL comment thread could be a place of contrasting dynamics.
My supporter and I, after a quick meeting, came up with our first anti-FDLangolier slogan:
“Don’t Fence Us Out!”
Catchy, isn’t it.

J i O, I love the Langoliers. That is one of my favorite movies. In fact any nutty movie having to do with time is. I know that’s not relevant to the thread, but oh well . . .
Hey chris big time EPU’d Zone buzzkill, dude.
Your posting belongs where more people will get a chance to read it.
You’re currently posting in an experiment. You’d think that the FDLangoliers would be secure enough in themselves to get that it’s only an experiment now wouldn’t you?
–
mui,
So good to see you again after all this time!
Remember when I went back in time and plopped down in the middle of a main thread overrun and announced to you that I was from the future (April 11)?
Good times!
Don’t be a stranger. Oh, and support the anti-FDLangoliers cause. Wear a button or something.

I saw a reference to Richard Armitage earlier in the thread and didn’t consider it was off topic. I’m outta here.
Where can I get a shirt like that???Would go real good with my progressive patriot”don’t spy on me”shirt.Too F*’in cool!
chris your comment was too important for this space. Sorry you took offense. None certainly was intended. The EPU’d Zone can be used and abused as a scratch pad, no problem. If you just want to get on record, no problem. But, problem, if you want your words read by the bright minds of the main thread commentariat. Persons, for whom, I have the highest respect.
–
DMM,
On the right side toward the header above you’ll find the blue logo of FDL and a link to the FDL store. The T-Shirt design you refer to may or not be among the items for sale.
–
LOL J i O, actually if IIRC (another one for the glossary) Bob put up this pic the other night in the comments, he photoshopped the words in to let us see what one would look like. I’d buy one too if they will get one, the way cafepress is set up they would have to get a new page or pay for a premium store, till then it’s the regular logo. (Where has Monk been btw?)
Gee thanks, Swopa #20. How elitist. What turn off. I thought everyone was welcome here!
Bushtit,
Thanks for watching the EPU’d Zone’s six, mate.
I answered SWOPA at the dawn of the EPU’d Zone above.
I remember trying to register at his site and told him that it was impossible because he had this wierd rule that there could be no more than one space in your username. I told him J i O with two spaces was my handle couldn’t he make an exception?
SWOPA said nope. So maybe you’re right. I still don’t see why one has to have a one space restriction. I don’t see anyone else using that convention.
–
rusty 116 – is that an old Doobie Bros. song? It sounds awfully familiar….

punaise,
I’m serious about the FDLangoliers.
I’ve just had to go back and reinstall the Late Nite EPU’d Archives on March 1st’s Late Nite FDL. The first Late Nite FDL on record.
When I posted the links in the entry just above, the post was awaiting moderation. If they moderate that out of existence, I’ll be forced to enter the Late Nite EPU’d Zone’s Archives to individual postings that will sneak under the moderator’s stingy radar.
It’s only an experiment, folks.

punaise – it’s a neil young tune. from the great 1977 release “American Stars ‘N’ Bars”.
Welcome to the Free the EPU’d Zone movement!
Right on!
This got me in trouble the other day with one of the “regulars”. ain’t gonna happen this far down thread is it? ha!
rusty,
Thanks for posting Neil’s lyrics. If the EPU’d Zone isn’t Home Grown nothing is. If you don’t mind, I’d still like to keep it as our EPU’d Zone rebel yell, or anthem, or something along those lines.
BTW — We’ve got the FDLangoliers actually allowing multiple link posting. *hoot-hoot* See # 131 above. The Archives got past the Excess-Linkage moderators.
At least on today’s EPU’d Zone thread. Let’s see what they do with the March 1 Deep Archive link which I won’t check until tomorrow.
–
Rusty,
You query: …ain’t gonna happen this far down thread is it? ha!
Does this answer your question about rules in the EPU’d Zone?
–
Jealous bitches! Don’t even front!
Are you paying for the bandwidth? I didn’t think so!
Thanks J i 0. I feel same as you TTFD#101. I’ve been a long time reader of FDL and sometime commentor, but man, I was deeply offended today! Oh well, so much for being a part of the kewl kidz. NOT!
J i O,
I’ll make sure to check in. It isn’t often that you meet someone who can tesseract in and out of the EPU zone. I hope tesseract is the right word. I am not good with the technical words of science fiction.
Oh good lord. Almost every thread someone uses the term “EPU’d” then someone else asks what it means and then somebody else answers it. People are extraordinarily friendly to lurkers every time they come out, and patiently answer the same questions over and over again.
Find something else to get hyper-sensitive about.
rusty whew!
I sure hope you’re feeling better now. Obviously that’s been building for some time.
The EPU’d Zone is perfectly suited for venting. Most of the “jealous bitches” never read this deep into the Zone anyway.
Just a word to the wise, however. Amazon is not just a place to buy books. Or a South American jungle river. Know what I mean?
Does the anagram TPTB mean anything to you?
–
And by the way, we FDlangoliers like all creatures of sci-fi should always pride ourselves on *never* being hipper than thou.
Jane the EPU’d Zone is just a form of self organized criticality as I’ve defined elsewhere.
_
What mui says!
Hey, mui, I was hoping you would have remembered (time travel fan, you) me dropping in on you out of nowhere and announcing I’m a “time traveler”. And to you, someone who’s deeply into time travel stuff.
Preview sucks!
–
Jane, with all due respect, I’m not talking about the EPU’d thread at all. I’m talking about how the comments have devolved into a self-congratulatory little “in crowd” thing going on here. It’s not inclusive, quite the opposite and it is very off-putting. And apparently I’m not the only one who feels this way. Yes, it is a community after all, but when Swopa states “I’m waiting for the day when EPU’d threads become like underground salons where the hipper-than-thou FDLers hang out and chat once the crowd has moved on” I was offended. Hipper than thou? Sheesh! Yeah, yeah, I’m harping here, but for once, I’d love to read more insightful comments from your posters besides “Fitz.” I don’t have all day or night to hang around here, there are other blogs to read and I have work to do. I think I’ll just politely excuse myself from the comments section in the future.
Bushtit — the “Fitz” tradition goes back way, way earlier than this blog, albeit its usual form is “Frist” and it can be found on virtually any large blog using Haloscan. It isn’t an indication that a comment section has devolved into anything.
And I don’t see the problem of old threads turning into salons for people who want to talk amongst themselves. I think it actually supports what you’re trying to lobby for, keeping the fresh threads free of in-crowdism and friendly to newbies.
It’s a community, people are going to develop friendships, customs, expressions. I can’t (and won’t) police it, and since this is one of the friendliest, most troll-free and welcoming blogs around when it comes to new people who announce themselves (I personally put up threads to invite people to de-lurk, and make a welcoming comment to them when I see them) I have to say I really don’t see your point.
Oh, I’m feeling much better.
Bushtit I hear you.
This side of the !ztiF — Fitz! line, is more laid back than the frenzy of the main comment thread. One can post at one’s leisure here with the assurance that at least one pair of eyes will read it.
–
Cool! Jane gets it.
And I don’t see the problem of old threads turning into salons for people who want to talk amongst themselves. I think it actually supports what you’re trying to lobby for, keeping the fresh threads free of in-crowdism and friendly to newbies.
Like she wouldn’t (he hastens to insert)!
–
Yes, I have made a comment or two to that ‘group’ who talks in a ‘way’ to others. Now, where as I usually deserve being admonished for I do enjoy insiting a riot (it really is too easy with people who make themselves to be ‘important’ while not earning it), there are those who do indeed get bashed by the self-appointed ‘best’ in the “Comment” section (from time-to-time). But that is life no matter where one goes. Some stay and adapt. Some leave never to return. Then there is me, whom eventually most hate because I am truly always correct… Always.
Your satans are your gods… forever:-)
deviantdevil,
I do appreciate that you use the term “correct” as opposed to “right” when you say:
Then there is me, whom eventually most hate because I am truly always correct.
You must be left handed, as am I, to be so precise as not to give the “righties” even the slightest tribute choosing the word “correct” vs. “right”.
C’mon! You’re left handed, true?
–
I don’t have a dog in this fight but I am a leftie.
For the record, I think that Goss has more on his plate than just the hooker problem. Lots more.
“I am thouer than hip.”
Look, what’s all the fuss? This is a welcoming place. FDL has evolved organically, and I suppose it differs from most other blogs in one key way: there are no open threads per se. Rather, comment threads tend to be a rolling scrum – a potpourri of on-topic thoughts, related links, legalese, off-topic but important news tidbits, expressions of concern for people with health problems or pet problems, cringe-inducing attempts at humor and word-play (guilty as charged, among others)…etc.
This multi-tasking may not work for everybody, but it seems to add to the special flavor of FDL. There is alot of respect among commenters for their respective contributions. Jane and Redd are exceedingly generous in allowing this culture to develop – I suppose they’d have put the kibbosh on that along time ago otherwise.
Anyway, I could go on, but I won’t.
for the record: left-handed
one last thing, not aimed at anyone in particular. (how to put this, as an XY?) – this is a femme-centrique site in many ways…a little respect goes a long way. Macho posturing and sexist comentary are not appropriate.
oh, and the front page posts aren’t bad, either :~)
Bob Adams, what a handsome man and such a true warrior spirit.
I have a crush. LOL!
Punaise,
I agree with you about FDL being open and organic. It’s got a real revolving door in terms of commenters. And it’s femme centrique as you put it. That’s key for me. The last part. (Embarrassing humor, though eh? Heh?)
I don’t think the feeding frenzies that the threads get into are meant to be offputting. People just start buzzing.
Other than that J i O, it’s an intriguing idea: FDLangoliers. It’s really cute. Call me a sci-fi nerd.
Oh, and three cheers for Bob Adams again.
J i O,
Did I miss something? How could I forget you’re a time-traveler?
I imagine you hanging cool or or zipping around looking for wrinkles and gaps in empty space, appearing two seconds ahead or behind. I cant be sure what your capabilites are, but I am sure they’re impressive.
