Thank you, Sandrine, for a great post. I notice that no one has taken the time to rebut your points. That’s because you’re right. I’m posts #149 and #160.

This is my first time commenting on this site, and unfortunately, it is not joyfully that I make my observations. We despise the morons on the right wing blogs for their unthinking acceptance of the right wing party line, but then descend to their same level here. How many personal attacks do we see against Hitchens? And Cole, instead of responding to the specifics of Hitchen’s argument, resorts to personal attacks. That is an indication of weakness, not strength. What difference does it make whether or how much Hitchens drinks? I read his piece in Slate and it is articulate and logical. There is no indication of sloppy writing or thinking. But the left reflexively supports Cole without even bothering to think through the issues. It’s disgusting. I am bored to death to read right wing blogs because there is such little logic there…as opposed to blind loyalty to the cause. But alas, human nature being what it is, the same is true with many on the left. Cole’s arguments are weak and in this case, Hitchens is correct. It’s strange isn’t it, that there are so few Professors of Farsi at the University of Michagan or other universities that not one weighs in? Where is the intellectual honesty here? How many on the left were left breathless b George Galloway without knowing his views? Hitchens was absolutely on target with Galloway for anyone who knows anything about Galloway’s history. Yet many on the left raved about Galloway, blissfully unaware of who the man was or what he stood for. It was sufficient that he appeared as a strong voice against Bush and his cronies. But it is not enough to reflexively mouth either left positions or right. One must always use critical thinking skills to buttress any argument. We deplore the Bush administration’s twisted logic as it destroys the Constitution yet we don’t examine the logic of some of our own positions. Hitchens has passionately argued against the loss of our personal freedoms and advocates that position relentlessly. I believe he even made himself party to a lawsuit in furtherance of those beliefs….yet not one comment on this site indicated an understanding of his logic or writings. All were content to take Juan Cole’s word for it. Shame on you.

Yes, I have read them Brendon. And what is your assertation that his translation is “wrong” based off of? Here’s the speech, as translated not by Cole, but by MEMRI
.

“‘Nobody believed that we would one day witness the collapse of the Eastern Imperialism [i.e. the U.S.S.R], and said it was an iron regime. But in our short lifetime we have witnessed how this regime collapsed in such a way that we must look for it in libraries, and we can find no literature about it.

“‘Imam [Khomeini] said that Saddam [Hussein] must go, and that he would be humiliated in a way that was unprecedented. And what do you see today? A man who, 10 years ago, spoke as proudly as if he would live for eternity is today chained by the feet, and is now being tried in his own country…

“‘Imam [Khomeini] said: ‘This regime that is occupying Qods [Jerusalem] must be eliminated from the pages of history.’ This sentence is very wise. The issue of Palestine is not an issue on which we can compromise.

Not only is the “wiped from the map” a shitty translation, but it dosen’t match the passive-agressive references to other enemies that have collapsed for reasons other than Iran ’s involvement.

And if MEMRI is an apologist for anti-semitic muslim nations, then I’m a nigerian prince looking to hide my inheritance in your chequing account.

Has anyone stopped to actually read the arguement? Cole’s translation is not only wrong, but he also completely misrepresents the meaning of Ahmadinejad’s words. The man is an apologist for fascism.

I have said this elsewhere on line, but Hitchens is clearly losing it and may editors are not doing their job. Example? He wrote a piece in Vanity Fair last year making the ridiculous suggest that Goldwater was a southern ticket (perhaps geographcally but in no way politically!). An astute USA Today reporter Maria Puete nailed him in a subsequent letter (wryly noting how much an oxonian pedigree was worth these days..).

My pet theory is more or less this: BushCo has Hitchens either bought up (scotch for life!) ala Armstrong Williams or blackmailed somehow (note the comment on Digby about Hitchens’ lothario days at the nation…) and in return they feed him material vacuumed up by the NSA (there is every reason to believe Prof. Coles’ email circle is being listened to–as a commenter on Digby noted, it is headed by Gary Sick who raised the specter of the October Surprise by the Reagan campaign in 1980).

Worth what you pay for it.
