The new album out today from the never-afraid-to-be-politcal Pearl Jam is entitled simply "Pearl Jam," and includes the song "World Wide Suicide:"
It’s a shame to awaken, world aflame
What does it mean when the war has taken over?
It’s the same everyday and the wave won’t break
Tell you to pray, while the devil’s on their shoulder
Eddie Vedder spoke about the song in a recent Rolling Stone interview:
Why do you think the musical community has been so quiet recently about the war, about the president? Or maybe you don’t think that?
I’m not sure what’s out there. People like Steve Earle are a great example. He goes on Bill O’Reilly. It’s beyond commendable. It’s gutsy and I think a lot of it, it doesn’t get heard. Or maybe people don’t like to mess up a good time. I mean, we could talk about it in this interview, and it might not be the part that gets in. We could talk about Democrats and why they aren’t leading an anti-war movement. Are they waiting for a shift in the polls? We could talk about our country in ways outside the war, like why they refused to sign the Kyoto Protocol, in regard to environment. Why aren’t we agreeing to strengthen the conventions on biological weapons? Why haven’t we signed the ban on landmines? Why haven’t we banned the use of napalm? They refuse to be subject to the jurisdictions of the International Criminal Court. They can get away with anything. If you highlighted the classic aspects of this war, find out who’s fighting and who’s dying, and why are there billions of dollars being spent on this war and schools are crumbling and 45 million people in the US don’t have health insurance? This is all stuff I’ve been reading in a book on Iraq called The Logic of Withdrawal
by Anthony Arnove. It seems like it’s a class issue, because there are things going on underneath this spectacle of war, and the Bush administration is using it as a distraction for the ills of this country that are being not only ignored but exacerbated. But, is anybody else saying that in interviews, and are they being edited? I’m not sure. Right now, we are in a situation where the "Worldwide Suicide" song is getting airplay, and three years ago that might not have happened. After 9/11, they took "Imagine" off the air! It’s interesting…I’m not sure why.
A lot of artists want to speak out but their managements clamp down for fear of having them "Dixie Chicked" by the right. It’s to Pearl Jam’s credit that they step out anyway.
They’ll be on the The Late Show with David Letterman this Thursday, and CBS will be streaaming the full concert from the Ed Sullivan Theater on the Late Show Web Site, starting at 5:55 pm EDT/2:55m PDT.

Avoiding an EPU situation…
RE: Dusty Foggo investigation, Larry Johnson posted about it on TPM in January. See his post here .
Juicy excerpt: “At dinner last night, a knowledgeable friend told me that CIA Headquarters is buzzing about the Dusty “water” affair, with genuine concern that he may be forced to resign because of the perceived, if not real, impropriety. And I thought the matter had fizzled. Not so I’m told. It is still alive within the bowels of CIA.”
In line with “the new black” I’m happy to report that Mr. K8 just bought me two new CDs — Neil Young’s Living With War and Bruce Springsteen’s We Shall Overcome: The Seeger Collection.
I love them both, but regarding the second I’ve been predicting for a long time that in addition to the hearkening back to the sixties we’ve been experiencing these past couple of years, we are due for a hearkening back to the THIRTIES in short order.
Springsteen’s inclusion on the album (and crowd-inspiring performance at the N.O. Jazzfest) of “My Oklahoma Home” — originally written about the tragedy of the Dust Bowl experience — will be just the beginning. Seeger’s roots were in the thirties, and Springsteen highlighting Seeger is very important culturally, IMO. And just yesterday an article was posted to encourage and inspire Democrats — by reminding them of how “unpopular” FDR was in certain quarters.
Any tilt toward another Great Depression will make this raising of the ghosts of the first one all the more “fashionable.” I see it as a good thing, to get Americans to remember our history and the hard-learned lessons we’ve forgotten.
EPU’d.
Mrs. K8,
Glad to oblige. Humor is always a gift best shared over and over again.
-GSD
What was the line yesterday?
Let us not forget Stephen Colbert who went in to the belly of the beast armed only with his rapier wit and some hair gel.
-GSD
Oops, sorry. That was supposed to be “just yesterday an article was posted to HuffPo…to encourage…”
And I should say I don’t have the albums in hand yet. Neil’s CD doesn’t go out until May 8, and we’re waiting for both to ship together. Anticipation!
LoneStarLiberal #122 previous thread:
New Texas Monthly has interesting story about immigration at the Del Rio/Eagle Pass station.
Summary: New draconian tactics are working. Numbers down from previous 6 months, specifically the OTM’s (other than Mexican). Basic tactics: arrest and confine all caught after hearing. Confinement up to 180 days. Next capture = serious jail time.
Hugely expensive, big fat mess. Court admin quoted as saying “welcome to the insanity.” They’re hearing 70-80 case a day.
This is all from memory; I could have misrecollected a point or two. But it’s clearly a beta test for new procedures to be rolled out as soon as Halliburton can build those detention centers.
I’ll try to submit more info from actual article if time permits – clients are so terribly demanding these days. But my impression was this: So the numbers are down in one small area at the Texas boarder. So what? Who can tell me those folks didn’t just head on down the boarder south or north and cross there? Sheesh, immigrants are so not that stupid.
time to jack up the fear factor — BIRD FLU IS GOING TO KILL MILLIONS!!
how fortunate for fredo that, as chuck todd suggested on hardball, a domestic catastrophe would be a way to regain his mojo.
My bud was driving into work this morning and was listening to a Boston radio station and they started playing Impeach the President and he was doing the snoopydance inside…
they then stopped the song and started talking about Neil’s hypocrisy having written Let’s Roll and now backing off from fighting terrorism… he shook his head in disgust and said they must members of the 32% backwash club.
These lyrics were written using the “Little Bitty Tear†song recorded by Burl Ives in 1960.
It expresses my opinion of our Decider-in-Chief.
A FEW MISPLACED LEAKS
A few misplaced leaks brought me down
Exposed my lies all ’round town
I had them made up to put boots on the ground
Oh, but a few misplaced leaks brought me down
When Rove said the polls were soaring
I thought, it’s Iraq‘s time to pay
Man, I’m so good at this leading
Hey Saddam, Junior’s on his way
A few misplaced leaks brought me down
Exposed my lies all ’round town
I had them made up to put boots on the ground
Oh, but a few misplaced leaks brought me down
Roberto said that I needn’t worry
Just continue the shock and awing
As lies begot lies in great flurry
The Decider is above all the lawing
A few misplaced leaks brought me down
Exposed my lies all ‘round town
I had them made up to put boots on the ground
Oh, but a few misplaced leaks brought me down
Everything was going per Dick’s scheme
Some warned the intel was conflicted
We picked it clean to support our dream
Oh Fitz, hath the people done convicted
A few misplaced leaks brought me down
Exposed my lies all ‘round town
I had them made up to put boots on the ground
Oh, but a few misplaced leaks brought me down
A few misplaced leaks brought me down
Exposed my ass as a CLOWN
I forgot they took “Imagine” off the air. The past six years have been absolutely surreal.

Sorry for the OT posts. Am late to the party, as usual.
Thanks for this Jane. I’m heading to the locally-owned music store now to pick up the Chicks CD, will ask for the new Pearl Jam too.
This really does seem to be the year the music artists are speaking out. Don’t laugh at me but the Pet Shop Boys have a new album out and have a new single out now called “I’m with stupid” and it’s about Tony Blair being Bush’s poodle. Not to mention the whole thing satires their relationship as if Tony Blair was in love with Bush.

Woo..
I’m ahead, I’m a man
I’m the first mammal to wear pants, yeah
I’m at peace with my lust
I can kill ’cause in God I trust, yeah
It’s evolution, baby
I’m at piece, I’m the man

On the loose, I’m a truck
All the rolling hills, I’ll flatten ‘em out, yeah
It’s herd behavior, uh huh
It’s evolution, baby
Admire me, admire my home
Admire my son, he’s my clone
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
This land is mine, this land is free
I’ll do what I want but irresponsibly
It’s evolution, baby

This one was just posted and is from the
WaPo’s online chat today:
“Milwaukee, Wis.: Tom, considering the respect I have had for his thoughts in the past, Dana Milbank’s comments about the WH Correspondents Dinner on Olbermann last night were deeply disappointing. Dana is funny. Dana is not nearly as funny as Mr. Colbert, however, and Dana has nothing approaching the raw courage Colbert displayed Saturday night at the WH Correspondents dinner. Please ask Dana to revisit his “not funny” comment in a column. Dana and the press in attendance didn’t like Mr. Colbert telling the truth about the corporate media’s stenography for the White House. That’s why they didn’t laugh.
Thankyou’s to Colbert approaching 30,000 at this site. You can leave one here
punaise –
It seems both Pearl Jam and Stephen Colbert have discovered that a good way to eviscerate the Deciderer is to speak in his own stupid voice, just amplifying the actual “thoughts” behind the stagecraft.
Rob >”…Don’t laugh at me but the Pet Shop Boys have a new album out…”
Not to worry & ignore those that do laugh at ya
Every one of those artists has a “tribe” they speak to & since ALL the crew of Spaceship Earth is in this together, we need all the artists we can get to speak their piece
All “tribes” must know !

Hey, Jane, yuo rock! Pearl Jam is my favorite band, and on my way home from work today I stopped in and bought their new CD. Got home, popped it on, then logged on and here you are talking about Eddie Vedder, the best voice in rock and roll. Synchronicty doesn’t get any better than that! Thanks for the info on Letterman.
I’ll get the Pearl Jam CD soon (though at a local record store, not amazon).
NPR reviewed the new Neil Young album

though the reviewer is wrong that there hasn’t been a lot of protest music over the last few years, it just hasn’t gotten as much attention.

New album is Bullet in a Bible…

I didn’t know mechanical problems on airplanes were such big news stories. Why are CNN and FNC (well, for them it’s obvious) devoting so much time to this? I don’t get it how this commands so much air time.
IMHO, many recording artists are late to the party b/c many of their customers are video war game playing/crew cutted war mongering dolts. 911 worked this crowd (and many on the edges) into a retaliatory war mongering frenzy. The recording artists have to chase the dollar first and foremost. With Bush at 32, and falling, its just now safe to come out of the woodwork – that is – pending anything the rethugs can spin to reverse the sinking of the Hindenburg. Then, of course, such recording artists would be America hating pinko fags, like they’d always maintained.
Matt – I agree, Colbert cant get five minutes but this non-event is interrupting tweety’s “special ed” report.

Ominous Iraq development of the day , 5/2
By Swopa May 2 2006 – 8:26am
“Juan Cole writes this morning on Sen. Joe Biden and foreign-policy maven Leslie Gelb’s plan (actually, Biden’s belated endorsement of an idea Gelb has been pitching for two and a half years) to divide Iraq into “a very loose federation of three big ethnic enclaves….”

I play games that are military-related (Medal of Honor, Battlefield Modern Combat 2).
The priorities of the cable news networks are so screwy.
OT – we are surrounded by idiots…bleh!
http://news.nationalgeographic…..raphy.html
JC – Biden and Gelb pitch their proposal like Bush pitched his “let’s invade Iraq” proposal. Unless they have lots of cards they aren’t showing bc they want to keep it all nice and simple for the press releases – they are making the very same kinds of mistakes IMO. They also have conveniently skipped over, on their “natural resources controlled centrally through Baghdad” concept, that the Kurds are already wheeling and dealing on the own private accounts. Put that Genie back in the bottle whydoncha Mr. Senator.
Couldn’t agree more Mary. Based on what Swopa wrote, their proposal could lead to war between our ally Turkey and our ally the Kurds.

basic cable porn.
it’s the breathless anticipation of death and destruction on a big fiery scale. mmmm, burned and broken bodies, heroic firefighters, airports. doesn’t get any better than that — unless, of course, it’s the lurid details of a young white girlie who’s been kidnapped/raped/murdered somewhere.
I’m so glad they mentioned Steve Earle. He’s the guy you never hear on the radio because he’s too country for rock stations and too “left” for country stations. His “Open Your Window” is one of my favorites.
Matt O, Good that you can play those games and keep it in perspective (entertainment). I say many, not all. The kids I refer to are victims of our American educational (indoctrination) system, their parents’ mores, and etc. Certainly, there are those, like yourself, who have achieved higher learning and understand our current state of affairs as it truly is. Please take no offense.
Since it’s EPU territory I’ll add these lyrics. They may not ACTUALLY constitute a protest song, but they are Dylan and one of my faves, so I’ll pretend.
Well, I see you got your brand new leopard-skin pill-box hat
Yes, I see you got your brand new leopard-skin pill-box hat
Well, you must tell me, baby
How your head feels under somethin’ like that
Under your brand new leopard-skin pill-box hat
Well, you look so pretty in it
Honey, can I jump on it sometime?
Yes, I just wanna see
If it’s really that expensive kind
You know it balances on your head
Just like a mattress balances
On a bottle of wine
Your brand new leopard-skin pill-box hat
Well, if you wanna see the sun rise
Honey, I know where
We’ll go out and see it sometime
We’ll both just sit there and stare
Me with my belt
Wrapped around my head
And you just sittin’ there
In your brand new leopard-skin pill-box hat
Well, I asked the doctor if I could see you
It’s bad for your health, he said
Yes, I disobeyed his orders
I came to see you
But I found him there instead
You know, I don’t mind him cheatin’ on me
But I sure wish he’d take that off his head
Your brand new leopard-skin pill-box hat
Well, I see you got a new boyfriend
You know, I never seen him before
Well, I saw him
Makin’ love to you
You forgot to close the garage door
You might think he loves you for your money
But I know what he really loves you for
It’s your brand new leopard-skin pill-box hat
ah, noted political analyst, deep thinker and nadirite eddie vedder chimes in. nice work eddie, no difference between gore and bush in 2000, eh?

hehe…so sad, yet so true.
Have to mention Tom Waits: “The Day After Tomorrow” and “Hoist That Rag”
jdw, A third party seems to have some better ideas and all that, but as we know from experience, they are spoilers in a two party system. As long as there is a conservative party (they got the money), we’re stuck with the democrats as a lesser of two evils. Too bad Vedder didn’t realize how tight the 2000 (s)election would be. We needed him and Springsteen and Green Day and…
I think these protest songs would have had much more meaning to me about 3 years ago. Now they are starting to seem trendy and more like a business decision.
“Too bad Vedder didn’t realize how tight the 2000 (s)election would be. We needed him and Springsteen and Green Day and…”
Anyone that was that stupid then, and I’m suppossed to care wtf he thinks, or worse, now to celebrate him? He can rot in hell with the blood on his hands. Shame on pimping his album here.
I don’t see any pimping here…
People are supposed to be capable of learning from mistakes…
And people are supposed to forgive…
Aren’t they?
Pearl Jam is OK, I liked their first album, but the burning question for me regarding artists in these times is…
WHERE THE HELL IS ZACK DE LA ROCHA, vocalist/songwriter of the now defunct Rage Against the Machine? Nobody did political agitprop like Zack, via Rage, both with music and with political activism. Sorry, but Audioslave (RATM with a new vocalist) is NOT the same. I can’t speak highly enough of Audioslave’s political activism (they were huge in bringing attention to the Florida migrant workers protesting against Taco Bell), but their music is so…nice. It just doesn’t have the edge that RATM had. It doesn’t have much of an edge at all. Y-A-W-N.
I’m trying to imagine what Zack via RATM would be saying (and DOING) right now… The Dixie Chicks, Neil Young, Pearl Jam and Steve Earle would seem downright tame in comparison.
Oh, and before there was Green Day, there was System of a Down. Hoo-boy… Their video for Boom! (directed by Michael Moore) was fuckin’ A awesome, featuring protestors around the globe in the leadup to the Iraqi war.
yes, boom! it is…
http://www.systemofadownonline.com/vid/boom.htm
Oh, how I miss Rage as well…
James McMurtry’s ‘Can’t Make it Here Anymore’ covers the whole shootin’ match.
Fela Kuti is the best protest music ever, period.
Aphrodesia, an SF-based Afrobeat band (lots of percussion and brass) has several incredible songs on their new album “Frontlines”. I suspect many FDL participants and lurkers would love this. I just know sharkbabe would.
http://www.aphrodesia.org/FrontLines.htm
Antibalas, an NYC-based Afrobeat collective has two albums “Who Is This America?” and “Government Magic” which are sure to please.
http://www.antibalas.com/
But if you really want to tap the roots of protest music, you need to hear Fela albums like “No Agreement”, “Shuffering and Shmiling”, and of course – Authority Stealing”

A few thoughts on your comment, also posted on your sites comments.
And the problem whith this is,,,,what? Why should our troops not be trained for the realities on the ground? They don’t set policy, they did’nt start this f’ked up war.If this helps them survive it,great! If this helps them not kill or harm innocents or “noncom’s” even better. You can’t give a gun to someone, poorly train them, drop them into chaos,no clear enemy, and not expect disaster.Anyone up in arms about this has there priorities screwed up.The military is not the enemy, the civilian leadership is,focus on them.
Oh yeah, here’s the link to what I’m talking about.
http://brandoland.blogspot.com/
BOT,I’m glad to see music finally coming around,’bout time.jdw-are you blaming Vedder for G’S getting elected in ‘00,get a grip dude!Try Ralph Nader’s ego,how ’bout all those who don’t vote ’cause it don’t make no difference, how ’bout incompetent Democratic consultants, never winning a race, but getting rich doing it.Plenty of blame to go around but I’m not shure any goes Vedders way, much less”blood on his hands”.
Late, but had to mention A Perfect Circle’s “Pet” released in September, 2003 on the “Thirteeth Step” album. One of my favorite anti-war songs.
Sample lyric:
Lay your head down child
I won’t let the boogeyman come
Count the bodies like sheep
To the rhythm of the war drums
Pay no mind to the rabble
Pay no mind to the rabble
Head down, go to sleep to the rhythm of the war drums
I’ll be the one to protect you from
Your enemies and all your demons
I’ll be the one to protect you from
A will to survive and a voice of reason
I’ll be the one to protect you from
Your enemies and your choices son
They’re one in the same
I must isolate you
Isolate and save you from yourself
Swayin to the rhythm of the new world order and
Count the bodies like sheep to the rhythm of the war drums
The boogeymen are coming
The boogeymen are coming
Keep your head down, go to sleep, to the rhythm of a war drums
Stay with me
Safe and ignorant
Just stay with me
Hold you and protect you from the other ones
The evil ones
Don’t love you son,
Go back to sleep
And most of America has been rocked to sleep by this Bush Administration lullaby for far too long.

WHERE THE HELL IS ZACK DE LA ROCHA”
It’s been a while, but you may recall that Zack did a protest song called “March of Death”, with DJ Shadow, during the 2004 election. It was released online for free as an mp3 at http://www.marchofdeath.com, but that site is no longer available.
Bomb bomb – rock the nation
take over televisions anna radio stations.
Michael Franti – Spearhead 2001
Then Rage against the machine, then…I was just thinking about an old sixties hit by Tom Jones that might apply to Fitz…’ Thunderball’.
Thinkin big sounds and big ideas. 1936 was a peak in the Dem party vote and Spanish revolution described by George Orwell.
70th anniversary so lets make it a big one.
Big fun, big noise , big wickerman to burn ol’ Big Time’ big, big, burningman BIG!

I posted about this on my own blog a couple of weeks ago…I will always love Pearl Jam for a) being Pearl Jam, and b) writing protest songs when nobody else was (four years ago), but they’re definitely not alone in their endeavor at the moment…as Rubber Soul’s post above would suggest, there’s a ton of protest music out there, and (and this is very important) a lot of it is very very good.
Sleater-Kinney’s “Combat Rock” was on their album released in August of 2002. Probably mostly about Afghanistan, but also about war lust in general. Plus they called out everyone else on the lack of protest songs.
