About gang activity in the Army - In 1991, after Iraq I, my daughter joined her new husband at Ft. Hood, TX. She taught for a year in the public schools there and was glad to leave. She was astounded by the level of gang activity and gang admiration in the schools. Weapons in the schools were also a HUGE problem and this was 15 years ago. She had experiences in the schools there that still seem unreal to me and this was on an Army base.

I don’t think that gangs in the Army are anything new. Maybe reservists mixed with regular Army are just now noticing them.

Christy,
Take note of the difference between the authentic fighter jocks and AWOL. The real pilots do not have the crotch straps buckled and therefore do not have the ‘high water trousers’ or the ’stuffed sock’ groin look. In another life I was an Instructor Pilot and the first thing I did when climbing out of the cockpit was unbuckle the lower straps so I could walk without excessive chafing.

zennurse # 84

Friedman’s Hummer taxing suggestion would have been more insightful and useful if it had been made back when SUVs and oversize pickups were becoming popular. A $5K tax on a SUV would have had a lot of consumers thinking more than twice about whether they needed something so big and inefficient. And of course, this doesn’t address the issue of why these vehicles were not covered by CAFE standards and treated like regular cars.

As for China, most of its energy comes from coal and last I heard there were few pollution controls, not to mention the carbon contribution to global warming.

I agree Friedman is a popularizer. He’s talented at putting out other people’s ideas but has no real capacity for critical analysis. Sometimes he’s ahead of the curve but if you throw enough shit at a wall some of it is bound to stick.

I don’t remember the source, but it’s my understanding that Bush’s May 2003 declaration of ‘an end to major combat operations in Iraq’ was designed to satisfy Japanese constitutional restrictions on deploying its military, so Japan could send soldiers to Iraq. This morphed into the flight suit photo op with the ‘Mission Accomplished’ banner.

Rooting for failure? How can there be “failure” when there was never even a plan?

I guess Cassandra was just one big walking rootfest.

Hugh - did I not see somewhere something about an upcoming 3rd effort at bringing peace to Fallujah?

BTW - any update anywhere from anysource on all those “deck of cards” prisoners who were released awhile back? THey get relocation contracts - Americans on American soil get NSLs, wiretaps, secret interrogations and military tribunals. There’s something I just can’t quite put my finger on . . .

Ok you are gonna think I’m nuts. heck I think I’m nuts for posting this but, here goes.

When Bush spoke in plaza in NOLA after Katrina, I said to someone else in the room, “that doesn’t look like Bush, it looks like someone pretending to be Bush”.

How many times have I seen coments on these blogs about a particular public appearance of Bush’s shere the viewer thought he seemed “off” or that his accent seemed different.

Compare the picture of Bush to the picture of Bush and his impersonator at the Wash Press Coprs dinner. I think the NOLA Bush looks more like the fake Bush than the real Bush. Am I hallucinating?
