Colbert wasn’t funny, he was dead on about what needed to be said. I laughed at first, then started to cry.

The problem the US is having is one that most other democracies got over centuries ago. The real problem is that the US broke from the Commonwealth and the British monarchy and ever since has been trying to set up its own aristocracy by stealth.
The Bush family is the tip of a US aristocracy that is trying to form. Look at most European countries and they have a glut of kings, barons, earls, etc. The Bushes are related to these and their genetic predisposition is to govern, like most in the monarchy.
The difference is that most countries realised long ago that the aristocracy does a poor job of governing a country for example look at the French revolution which the Bushes probably still haven’t forgiven them for). Consequently in those countries the aristocracy have ceremonal positions and inherited wealth but are more or less prevented from running for a political office.
If the US was still part of the Commonwealth they would have their share of princes, barons, earls, etc and the Bushes would certainly be included in that.
So this association would kill off any chances they had to hold political office. The idea of an aristocracy is you know who they are, and they represent a reminder of avoiding them taking power again. The Brtish remember the Magna Carta and wouldn’t want someone like Prince Charles running for Prime Minister. Yet allowing Bushes to run for president is the same thing.
Bush is a lot like Prince Charles in Britain, and both are equally unsuited to run a country. Modern societies are too complex to be ruled by a family i.e. monarchy any more.
“Crashing the gate” is another version of what other countries had to do, to somehow get the monarchy out of power. It might be helpful to keep identifying the Bushes as aristocracy, intent on restoring a monarchy etc.
This problem isn’t going to go away with Bush. Jeb is waiting for after Hillary and then there will be other members of the Bush extended familly being groomed for the presidency i.e. to be king.
If the US allowed citizens to have titles like earl, baron, duke, etc it would be better for them. People like the Bushes would want to have these titles and then would be clearly marked as to what they want.
The Bushes are good for pomp and circumstance, riding in horse drawn carriages and waving to the subjects, etc. When they try and do anything else, like most of the aristocracy, they just mess things up.

I wonder why it is that of the major awards for hard-hitting journalism given at the correspondents’ dinner, AP reporter Elizabeth White only mentioned two awards for actual WH stories:

http://articles.news.aol.com/n.....p;cid=2194
One was for merely printing a Bush administration “leak” (”scooping” the Roberts’ nomination) and the other was for a piece of administration propaganda (Bush’s long-delayed photo-op in New Orleans). Were there any people recognized for revealing anything critical about the WH? I don’t know. I guess I need to do more of my own research.

We sent flowers to Helen Thomas.
Let’s send flowers to Stephen Colbert, % Commedy Central.

The folks inside the corporate towers need to see something real in the way of positive reaction, and they will all need our moral support when the Swiftboaters go after them this week.

Just heard the Colbert bit and it was terrific! I am in Manhattan for a couple of days and just picked up a wireless connection. I missed the Peace rally yesterday but IT WAS HUGE!! Lot of pics in the papers in the news stands. Tomorrow the city is going to screech to a halt for immigration at 12:16. I’ll let everyone know how it goes. Visited the WTC site today….the area was jammed with people from all over. I’m like a junkie with my firedoglake….

love you guys!

Jumping to comment before reading the thread…

Colbert is a remarkable talent and a true patriot. He said it “like it is” and ripped the clothes off the emperor and his minions. My husband and I in Chicago sat rapt in front of the t.v. today. “Oh my god!” “Can you believe he said that?!” “Unbelievable” “Read about it on the blogs, but it’s even better in real life.” “Te heee te hee!”

Thanks for the diary and all you do to make this site so relevant and valuable!

Just did a quick scroll thru the entries & didn’t see this link (below). Crooksandliars now has the Colbert video available.
Big file, but seems complete and, yes, its both side-splittingly hilarious AND painful to watch. It’s like Lenny Bruce, but with clean language and a faux-sauve personality. Absolutely amazing what a truly brave guy can get away with in a big hurry talking fast & faking a breezy attitude.
The “real” correspondents should have felt ashamed (all except Helen, bless her!). What Colbert did should be THEIR job.
The way he zinged out those darts finally gave W some of the same discomfort recipients of his insulting nicknames must feel.
He finally had to sit through some of what he should have been hearing for the last many years. I wish I could say it would get through to him, but it won’t, except to incite anger. The emperor has no clothes. He’s just been told. Someone go get a mirror to replace his teleprompter; it doesn’t seem to do him any good anyway.
