Ron Wyden has long been a big supporter of progressive energy policy within the Senate. He’s on CSPAN-2 right now passionately filibustering against the "outrageous boondoggle" (as he calls it) for the oil companies that his amendment seeks to take away. It’s quite heroic.
This is the thing we always encourage Democrats to do. This is something worth standing for. He’s going straight after the onerus Gail Norton right now. I urge you strongly to turn on your television sets, because cable news outlets aren’t covering it. Contact your Senator and tell them you support this.
Some background:
What does the Wyden Amendment do?
It prohibits the Department of Interior from providing any additional royalty relief as long as the price of oil is above $55 per barrel while providing an exception in cases where royalty relief is needed to avoid supply disruptions because of hurricanes or other natural disasters.
Why do we need this Amendment?
With oil selling for more than $70 a barrel — $15 a barrel higher than at the price the President said incentives weren’t needed — Congress should not continue giving away more taxpayer money for unnecessary subsidies to benefit profitable energy interests. We should prohibit further royalty relief and save our citizens hardearned tax dollars for more worthy uses. President Bush has repeatedly said that “With $55-a-barrel oil, companies don’t need incentives to explore for oil and gas.” Today, the price of oil is well over $70 per barrel and yet oil and gas companies continue to receive taxpayer subsidies to explore. According to U.S. News & World Report the Federal government will “dole out $7 billion in breaks to the oil industry over the next five years.” And if that isn’t bad enough, the amount of that subsidy “could increase fivefold.”
How much do these subsidies cost?
We’re talking about subsides for oil and gas companies of as much $35 billion. That would pay for one-third of the cost of the Supplemental Appropriations bill now on the Senate floor. This supplemental had to be designated as emergency spending because we don’t have the money to pay for it, and yet we can afford to give away tens of billions in subsidies to profitable energy companies. Under the Energy Bill signed into law last summer, oil companies were given new subsidies in the form of reduced royalty fees for the oil and gas they extract from Federal lands, including off-shore drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. Under laws already on the books before the Energy Bill was enacted, oil and gas industries were on tap to get at least $1.4 billion a year in tax breaks and other subsidies for total of $6 billion in taxpayer subsidies over the next five years. Now, with the Energy Bill signed into law, oil and gas interests will get another $2.6 billion of additional tax breaks and a variety of subsidies on top of what they were already slated to receive.
Wyden has been on the floor since early this morning. He wants an up-or-down vote on his amendment that will force people to go on the record for big oil company tax breaks; the GOP wants to force it into committee where it will, of course, die.
I met Wyden last year at a party given by Ellen Nagler where RJ Eskow played country music. This issue is one he is very passionate about. He richly deserves our support.
Update: Carla from Loaded Orygun has more.

Good to see Ron get off his ass and do something. He really should be speaking out on a lot more issues too.
An up or down vote seems reasonable to me. What’s the Republican spin on this?
From the New York Times
No one has been charged with the underlying crime of revealing classified material. Mr. Fitzgerald is seeking to establish whether any crimes were committed with the disclosure of Mrs. Wilson’s identity, which first appeared in a column by Robert D. Novak — no relation to Ms. Novak — in July 2003. The identity of Mr. Novak’s original source for the column that triggered the entire case is still unknown, at least to the public. Mr. Novak has testified to the grand jury since Mr. Rove’s last appearance in October 2005.

Congrats EPU!!
JAMES LEE WITT- WIKIPEDIA
By 1996 an Atlanta Journal-Constitution editorial said that “FEMA has developed a sterling reputation for delivering disaster-relief services, a far cry from its abysmal standing before James Lee Witt took its helm in 1993. How did Witt turn FEMA around so quickly? Well, he is the first director of the agency to have emergency-management experience. He stopped the staffing of the agency by political patronage. He removed layers of bureaucracy. Most important, he instilled in the agency a spirit of preparedness, of service to the customer, of willingness to listen to ideas of local and state officials to make the system work better.
I sent thanks to Don about 2 hours ago.
It’s the start of Mr. Smith goes to Washington.
God Bless him… he won’t give up.
Reid and Durbin just showed up to help help.
Almost *** 5 *** hours!
Wyden disappointed me when he failed to stand with Feingold on censure. But he’s one of the Good Guys.
Bush is now the man who destroyed FEMA.
I wouldn’t mind that being said loudly and often.
That “safety” meme just gets weaker and weaker.

Thank you Ron! One of the good guys indeed. I’m always calling Smith and Walden, but should call Ron too, just so he knows we support him.
# 8. I shared your disappointment and I worked for him in DC when he as a congressman awhiles back. Until this moment, I had no idea what had happened to him b/c he has not taken a stand on so many issues. Right now he is one of the good guys, he could revert, he hasn’t won me back as fan just yet – although maybe I should take what I can get.
“Boondoogle”? One of his staffers should have given him a better word.

Senators: ‘Bumbling’ FEMA must go
Panel finds disaster agency beyond repair
“Our first and most important recommendation is to abolish FEMA,” said Maine Republican Sen. Susan Collins, chairwoman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee. “FEMA is discredited, demoralized, and dysfunctional. It is beyond repair. Just tweaking the organizational chart will not solve the problem.”
“FEMA has become a symbol of a bumbling bureaucracy in which the American people have completely lost faith.”
[snip]
In the aftermath of the September 11, 2001, attacks, Collins, Lieberman and their committee were instrumental in the creation of DHS and FEMA’s integration into it. Congress would have to pass new legislation to smash FEMA and build its replacement.
[snip]
Funny, FEMA was working fine before Shrub got elected.

Are EPU and JLW the same universe?
Or am I in my own, once again, confused universe?
Jane,
I read you every day and love your tough attitude. I think maybe you mean the “odious” GaLE Norton, not onerous, which means burdensome.
Ginny
This is way cool. I can’t believe I’m exited about watching c-span.
Call the networks! Tell them to lead with this story, dammit!
Dairymaid – Who or what is this “JLW” that you speak of?
just want to give a shoutout to dana priest and her onliine chat today. my favorite is her direct hit at gambling bill bennett:
Indianapolis, Ind.: Bill Bennett told Wolf Blitzer the other day that you should be arrested for your story about secret prisons. Wolf asked Howard Kurtz to respond. Howie looked a little stunned at first and then came strongly to your defense. How do you respond to people that are saying you should be arrested?
Dana Priest: Well, first, Bennett either doesn’t understand the law or is purposefully distorting it. He keeps saying that it is illegal to publish secrets. It is not. There is a category of secrets that is illegal to publish–names of covert operatives, certain signal intelligence and nuclear secrets–but even with these, prosecution is possible only under certain circumstances. Beyond that though, he seems to be of the camp that the government and only the government should decide what the public should know in the area of national security. In this sense, his views run contrary to the framers of the Constitution who believed a free press was essential to maintaining not just a democracy, but a strong, vibrant democracy in which major policy is questions are debated in the open.

Just called the two K’s from MA. I think Wyden is upstaging something similar that Kerry was going to do, but what the hell, we’re all supposed to be in this together!

Shy? Or my reading comprehension problem?
The royalty issue has really been a great point of discussion with our gooper friends, most folks are completely unaware of the royalty waiver – let alone the built in increases in the Energy Bill –
Katrina is the only other issue we’ve seen that has pissed them off as much
this is awesome. Good news, good strategy.
FWIW: the WaPoo Blog has a fresh thread – Queen Beatrix has already weighed in. The first comment was from somebody inquiring where one can buy an I-Pod.
You are confusing an omniscient evil parallel universe with a disfunctional repug stooge?
Geez that hurts.
Please work on the reading comprehension, and I’ll let it pass……….this time :)
Living in Los Angeles, I can tell you that over the past 5-10 years, there has been a massive reduction in the actual number of gas stations. The closed gas stations still sit on many corners, in all parts of LA. The “supply” of gas stations means it is less convenient to find gas when you need it, and the prices can be controlled much more easily. This has happened.
I have a rather tongue in cheek suggestion to make about gas prices, and making them more fair. Link the price of gas to the value of your car. The first year, you pay a percentage of the price you paid for the car itself: if you bought a $100,000 beauty, you pay $10 per gallon. thereafter, you pay a percentage of top blue book for the value of your car. In my case, my old Volvo is worth about 8,000. I’d pay 80 cents. Take the value of any car and move the decimal over four places and voila!
Way to go Wyden!!!!!!!!!!
Dairy maid. My turn at reading comprehension. I am not James Lee Witt, who is not apparently a repug stooge.
So, my apoligies.

*ilson #29, so what is the topic of the new thread at WaPoo blog? Figures I finally closed out that window this morning while tidying up.
Filibuster, old school.
I’ve always admired Sen. Wyden.
OT: It’s interesting to read the comments over at Tom McGuire’s blog. The pro-Libby lawyers have their say on the motion to dismiss. The legal eagle commenters at this site are more fun. McGuire’s legal commenters seem a bit pinched. You know, like their shoes are too tight.
Wyden is doing a brilliant job and he still has a voice… he could go on for a long while. ;) 5 1/2 hours and going strong; nice eveready bunny action.
stepped away for a moment , what is going on with Harry ? is he the ‘yard teacher’ or is he backing Wyden ?
WOW.
Thank you Jane – I would not have a clue this was occurring and this is a very hopeful and admirable sight.
BTW – does anyone know the Senate switchboard # offhand?
Well, I followed Ms. Hamsher’s suggestion…never heard of this Wyden fella, but you know….he’s got a pair! Good for him…he’s IN THE GAME. We need to see more like this.

Does anyone know where I might be able to get a copy of the so called “Dartmouth Plan” signed by a Publius that’s going around? I heard about it from a friend in DC recently, and she said it contained some interesting strategic ideas concerning national security, media and the economy.

Does anyone know a good florist to call in D.C.? I’d love to send roses to Senator Wyden.

The Longer Wyden talked the more it kept the spotlight on those fuckers….nothing could have been clearer…..and yet what do they do.
speaking of Bill Spin Bennett here’s the transcript of what he had to say to wolfie about Rove and his 5th appearance :
BENNETT: Well, I understand he went there voluntarily.
But I have got to tell you, what fascinates me is the degree of interest by the all of the media in this case. We are talking about a — the name of an agent that was not covert. There was no damage done to the CIA or classified information. And, yet, the whole world of the media is absolutely obsessed with it.

What? Cut subsidies to oil companies? Oh, the humanity!!!
I’m sure Ken Mehlman’s dusting off his best, ‘the democrats have no ideas speech’ right now.
All the Democrats have to do is tell the damned truth and aggressively point out how disastrous GOP rule has been for everyone but the top 5%. Don’t back down and don’t relent.
If they aren’t doing this in light of the current political momentum, they’re too compromised to be worthy of representing us. For a while I was saying that you could finger the sleazeball Dems if they were critical of Howard Dean and his efforts (yeah that’s you Joe Biden, Joe Lieberman and many, many more)….now you can finger the Vichy Dems by who’s keeping a low profile while the window of opportunity is wide enough to drive a truck through. The leaders are stepping up.
BTW, Ron Paul (R-TX) was outstanding on C-SPAN the other night as I battled to stay awake to see the giant rubberstamp. He referred to us as an empire several times. Has ANY other Republican had the balls to do that?

Rove and the grand jury: A Bob Novak angle?
Maybe it’s a lesson on why reporters shouldn’t bury their leads. Or maybe it’s a lesson on why bloggers should read all the way to the end of a story. Either way, we’re embarrassed to admit that Dan Froomkin caught something we didn’t in the very last sentence of today’s New York Times story on Karl Rove’s grand jury testimony.
As we reported Wednesday, Robert Luskin said that his client’s latest testimony concerned “a matter raised since Mr. Rove’s last appearance in October 2005.” We knew about two things that have happened since Rove’s October grand jury appearance: Bob Woodward came forward to say that someone had leaked Valerie Plame’s identity to him back in 2003, and we all learned about the way in which Viveca Novak apparently tipped off Luskin to Rove’s leak of Plame’s identity to Time’s Matthew Cooper.
Well, it turns out there was at least one more post-October development: In the very last line of her Times story today, Anne Kornblut says that Robert Novak “has testified to the grand jury since Mr. Rove’s last appearance in October 2005.” Why? When? Kornblut doesn’t say; she doesn’t even say how she knows that Novak testified.
Novak was the first reporter to put Plame’s identity into print. We know the second source for his outing column was Rove; the identity of the first source, described only as a “senior administration official” who isn’t a “partisan gunslinger,” remains one of the central mysteries of the case. Novak said the other day that Fitzgerald has known the answer “for years,” but he wouldn’t say much else…

Sen. Wyden isn’t speaking any more. I’m not sure why. It looks like the filibuster is over. Anyone else been watching?
OT: Specter bluffing again, or growin a pair?
“WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter said Thursday he is considering legislation to cut off funding for the Bush administration’s secret domestic wiretapping program until he gets satisfactory answers about it from the White House.
“Institutionally, the presidency is walking all over Congress at the moment,” Specter, R-Pennsylvania, told the panel. “If we are to maintain our institutional prerogative, that may be the only way we can do it.”
ot, but re a truman commission to investigate the corruption of the iraq reconstruction efforts — louise slaughter was on franken’s show today and he brought up this question. slaughter said previous attempts have been made to have such a commission, but has been rejected by the republicans (surprise).
i don’t know why the fuck democrats don’t make that a friggin issue. not only is it criminally irresponsible not to investigate the billions stolen by the bush/cheney cabal, but it reminds people of democratic do-gooderism from the past.
Wyden conceded as he,ll never get them to vote. He was on 5 1/2 hours.
Will he get any news coverage?
Looks like its up to blogs to back Wyden for now.
Just got off the phone with 3 of the major local Portland, OR TV stations..NONE of them are covering Wyden’s filibuster. Its not on their websites. It won’t be on midday news casts.
I’ll be watching for it on the local evening news to see if its covered tonight and blogging on it tonight.
Ridiculous.
Dairymaid – See my later reading comprehension post – have no clue if he is a repug, and I should have read up on his competency. I agree that competency, regardless of party affiliation, is the key to a FEMA type job. I don’t even know if he is a repug. I was having too much fun being EPU.

I’m trying to put together something on this issue for Selden Spencer’s campaign. Does anyone know where to look for the occurrences of GOP rejection?
Mental Note:
This one’s an argument-winner with Wingnuts, Conservatives, everybody and their dog(s). No one, NO ONE, in their right mind thinks that oil companies need subsidies of any sort now, and it’s absolutely obscene that they would allow one to be given to them. Beyond obscene…it’s stupid, because little stunts like these are going to come back to haunt the oil industry. When the pendulum swings the other way, the revenge will be pitiless.
Just found an envelope Harry Reid sent me a while ago. Into it goes one of my phony “blog checks” that says that I will only give to dems with backbone and recommended by the blogs henceforth. I’ll include a thank you note for screwing Wyden on this one.
C Span3 – Specter threatening Chimpy with funds cutoff – if he doesn’t come forward and ’splain the NSA program
Alaskan_Pete #63
@ the end of the article you cite was something really telling:
Specter’s announcement came a day after the House passed an bill 327-96 to dramatically increase spending on intelligence programs. In the process, Republicans blocked an amendment to expand congressional oversight of the NSA’s warrantless surveillance program.
House Intelligence Committee Chairman Peter Hoekstra, R-Mich., said allegations that NSA domestic wiretapping operations are abusive or unconstitutional are outrageous and that Congress is committed to vigorous oversight of the program.
April 27th, 2006 at 12:37 pm (#63) OT: Specter bluffing again, or growin a pair?
These may not be the only choices. Specter may see more danger in not doing something than in doing something. It’s clear the Republicans are in some electoral trouble at the moment. One way to counteract that trouble is to be seen as out in front of this issue. It irks some conservatives that Congress has so little power, too.
If the Republicans lose the Senate, Specter will no longer be chairman of the judiciary committee, which is something he’s sacrificed considerable face to achieve.
years ago, I heard civil rights activist Andrew Young after he got elected to Congress. He said the big Atlanta corporations had all vigorously opposed his election but on his first day after the election lobbyists were welcoming him and were making appointments to get to know the new Congressman…
Specter knows there is no realistic way to do what he threatens, so I think he’s in it for the 2006 soundbite of “Republicans standing up to Bush†and as a bit of cover if some of the cases filed go as south as they might.
I’ve never been a big Wyden fan till now – good for him. It might start to show some of these guys, though, the benefits of standing a bit together now and then. I’m sure I’ll die remembering Feingold having to do sole duty reading the Constitution on the floor.
GSD — were Rice and Rumsfeld still in Iraq while Turkey was bombing? Things are falling apart so many different ways over there.
Imo, Wyden has always been a good guy. I don’t always agree with his decisions, but I know he does what he thinks is best for Oregon.I lived and grew up in Oregon,so I always kind of keep an eye out for what’s going on across the river.
called Obama and Durbin …
GSD – forwarded your link to MFI’s latest since they are discussing Turkey, etc … you might want to take a look.
Thanks, Jane, for the alert, and THANK YOU, Ron Wyden.
I caught the last 15-20 minutes, including Domenici’s “question posed as a speech.” And therefore I witnessed Harry Reid’s intervention to STOP WYDEN. Now I’m far from knowing all the behind-the-scenes details, but Harry Reid, right here, right now, in my opinion your request to Wyden SHOOTS THE AMERICAN PEOPLE AND YOUR PARTY IN THE FOOT.
And it starts to give me a gut-level sense of the horror show that is Harry Reid as Minority Leader. Ron Wyden is doing one of the only two things that this Senate should be doing right now. Saving tens of BILLIONS of taxpayer dollar handouts to giant oil companies or stopping the war in Iraq. There isn’t much else that trumps those two efforts. And Harry Reid came out and said, in effect, and publicly, ‘o.k. Ron, we get your point, now shut up — the Republicans have a bunch of political amendments that they WILL allow votes on, so let’s let them get it on.’ And Ron Wyden, after stating that he is prepared to go all night, if need be, caved in to this request from his “leader.”
Why? Because it is “obvious” that the Republicans will “never” allow a VOTE on Wyden’s (according to Domenici “meaningless”) amendment. But Senator Wyden (and ESPECIALLY HARRY REID): JUST TRY GOING ALL NIGHT — and see how they will run… What a CLASSIC example of failed strategy from Reid…
Ron — if you go all night and all day, YOU WILL GET YOUR VOTE! You’ll probably also get live cable coverage, and MASSIVE embarassment of the Republicans. But Harry Reid just cut you, and us, off at the legs. I’m afraid I doubt he had a legitimate reason for doing so, except that years ago, the Senate used to operate differently and Harry Reid can’t adapt to current realities.
Senator Wyden — PLEASE regroup, recharge, reorganize, and start over. THIS one you CAN win, on behalf of all Americans. I am absolutely behind you.
Jane & Christie. I always appreciate your giving us a quick heads up when we can pester D.C., plus giving us such terrific ‘ammunition’. ;-)
Suggestion: You urge folks to contact their senators ASAP when things like the Wyden effort come up. Terrific, but why stop there?
I nearly always send appropriate comments right along to Frist and Reid too.
—AND to selected out-of-staters with, ahem, national-level aspirations — depending on the subject matter & relevance — e.g., ANYONE giving hints of presidential aspirations should be made to feel they’re already on the hot seat, and that what they DO is way more important than what they say.
Again, given circumstances, adapt your thots and pester the MSM anywhere you can (& of course mbrs of the House, state & local folk, when useful).
Yes, we should be polite & respectful, but that doesn’t mean we can’t be plenty tough, and make it clear we WILL NOT GO AWAY.
It’s a pain to have to do that, but it often does work surprisingly well.
Keep up the good work, everybody, and THANKS!
OT, but check out http://www.rasmussenreports.co…..proval.htm
They have Bush at a record low (for them)
The other day someone posted a graph of Big Oil’s political campaign donations, R vs. D and of course the difference was stark. Why can’t the Democrats just get a hold of that, blow it up and carry it around with them wherever they go? Yes, Big Oil contributes to some Dems too, but all of the megacorporations ass-cover by hedging their bets and spreading a little largesse in both directions. In the case of Big Oil though, the discrepancy is like 4 to 1. Show the people!
I just ordered a dozen roses for Sen Wyden to be delivered tomorrow from Nancy’s as recommended above. The total cost was $60. I hope that’s not considered a bribe! ha. Re: What is NAGRA?
Steve, can I call you Steve? There is something so intimate about the internet.
Anyway, I found your EPU’d question back a couple threads ago, so I hope this finds you.
Once upon a time in the good old days when I did mob and public corruption cases, there were two basc kinds of body wies, NAGRA and Kell.
One did “point to point” transmission only, the other did a recording. The point to point wire was often used for safety purposes (like hving back up break down the door if you are in trouble) and to create a second audio “witness” in the form of the person monitoring the transmission who could corroberate your version of events.
The other creates tapes. While you may think tapes are preferrable for evidentiary purposes, agents (and me) hate ‘em. First you have to survive an audibility hearing and you risk having them excluded from evidence.
Second, you start having defense lawyers challenge the words homophonically. When the Mayor said what sounds like “I really need a bribe” the defense will claim he was realy saying “I really need a bride” because he suddenly decided he needed to get married!!! –if only his poor first wife knew, sob. –Snark.
Lastly, often the wire picks up your guy better than the defendant, so big chunks of the defendant’s statements are inaudible. This causes defense lawyers to count the syllables in the inaudible defedant’s sentences and substitute fabricated exculpitory statements for the mumbly static and/or to claim entrapment.
As we all know, I am technically challenged, that’s why I can’t link no matter how hard I try, so don’t ask me to explain (or spell)parabolic michrophones or pinhole cameras (something about fisheye lenses–but it’s amazing the places you can install them)
We need guest post prom some nice FBI tech guy for that.
Harry has a blog. If you want to leave a message about what he did to Wyden’s amendment, try this: http://www.giveemhellharry.com/blog
And be sure to leave a fake email address or your real one will be sitting out there naked.

maybe try giving slaughter’s office a call and reference the comments from franken’s show today. she was very deliberate in her comments, so it shouldn’t be too hard for them to answer and give specifics. (hey, i’m a native iowan, too. lol)

I’d bet ‘follow the money’ is ‘inoperatve’, imho.
If Specter knows what he’s talking about, and really means it….good luck.
I’d think that if any committee has jurisdiction and access to the books, it would be Intell. Good luck there. You’ll need it.
when you call Reid’s office – push 1 to get a person … I asked why and the poor thing was pretty unsure, no answer, we don’t know, etc then I left a message with her that I was upset
let’s keep them busy this afternoon!
Senate Democrats should have flocked to the floor to help Senator Wyden make the point that oil companies are being subsidized while profits are going through the roof. Kick ass, give ‘em hell Ron.
I contacted by of my senators.
BK92 thanks. where are you?
for Susan in Iowa 89:
I’m just not comfortable using a politician’s blog to bring pressure or send a message. Also don’t like this ‘fake address’ stuff. Maybe I’m too new at this, but there’s more to it that that.
I think it could be far more effective to call or to use an e-mail contact page. I always use the latter, thus avoiding cost of call &/or stammering to a stranger. E-mail says just what I want, and directs my comments right where I want them, rather than just putting them out there & risking the sort of exposure you noted. Besides, there’s the very real possibility of developing rapport you wouldn’t have thru a blog situation. Hence, your effect on the lawmaker’s actions is potentially stronger.
Just a thot. Thanks.

Not answering for GSD, but wanted to let you know that Condi and Rummy got a note from NSA saying “get out now, all hell is going to break loose.” heh, heh.
Goss as Dr. Stragelove – Steve did it up with a bow!
Wyden’s 55/barrel phase out point is much more than reasonable. Lots of oil & gas has been produced economiclaly and productively at the 24-30 range; old strippers here get re-opened all the time if there is strength over 36 or so. There is very little incremental production I can imagine that needs to be incentivized over 55/bbl.
Dear #96 What do you make of this?
In 2004, the #1 recipient of money from oil to a senator Kerry, John (D)$305,610
It’s the money which corrupts the entire political process. And, for his “take,” Kerry should never run for anything, again. I say that as a Democrat!
The filibuster is over, but it’s done two (2) things:
1) It’s guaranteed that coverage of the Wyden amendment will be on national TV this evening.
2) We got to go on camera exposing the fact that even as they rake in record profits, the oil companies are getting $35 billion a year in our tax money — and that the Republicans, by refusing to allow a vote on this amendment, STILL WANT THEM TO GET IT.
“Harry has a blog. If you want to leave a message about what he did to Wyden’s amendment, try this: http://www.giveemhellharry.com/blog
And be sure to leave a fake email address or your real one will be sitting out there naked.”
Just left a note there. Usually I don’t believe in the fake e-mail thing, but as long as they’re going to make my e-mail public, with the kind of wingnut traffic that site gets, no fucking way am I giving out my real contact info.
Reid is such a sack of shit for kneecapping Wyden the way he did. What an ass clown.
Adie 101 I think your point is valid, and I don’t think a site should automatically become a target. I use calls, email, fax myself. OTOH, Reid sends me lots of mail from that site, asking for money and telling me what a great job he’s doing. Today’s headline on the site is “George Bush: Help Americans, not just big oil.” There seems to be a difference between his action in the Senate and his words on the blog.

An up or down vote seems reasonable to me. What’s the Republican spin on this?

Removing fat perks for the greedy oil industry harms America and freedom and endangers the troops and emboldens the terrorists. Additionally, it makes Jesus cry.
Now deep into EPU territory, but I want to agree with Ginny. True that the dictionary lists it as oppressive, but I’ve never seen onerous used for a person. First time for everything I guess.
Apple – unfortunatley the NSA was busy with FDL and spying on Quakers – priorities.
The VP’s sister murdered and Turkey bombbing Northern Iraq, – Rice and Rummy spread goodwill and great karma wherever they go.
“giving away taxpayer money” (!)
Gotta love it. Where’d it come from in the first place?
Please don’t forget that this Saturday is also:
March for Peace, Justice and Democracy
Saturday, April 29 – New York City
March steps off at noon
Assemble beginning at 10:30AM
Grassroots Action Festival in Foley Square, 1:00PM-6:00PM
Maps: Assembly Area & March Route
It should be magnificent: sunny skies, pleasant temperatures (low 60s), and a massive crowd this Saturday at the March for Peace, Justice and Democracy in New York City.
New York in Springtime is a beautiful time, especially when you can spend it with friends caring for this country and voicing their concern over the right wing president and the corrupt administration.
This is a little OT, but still in the vain of people in Congress actually doing something. I was browsing my rep’s website today and came across this letter which calls for Rummy’s resignation.
I thought that was kinda cool.
As an ex-pat Oregonian (who still votes by absentee ballot), Ron Wyden as been one of the better exports of our state to Washingon for a long time. I don’t agree with everything he does, but he’s still one of the good guys and someone I’m proud to have as my representative in government. Go, Ron! (Hope someone’s keeping him in water and throat lozengers!)
Wyden is my new senate hero. Living in Wyoming gives me a pretty good grasp of this issue and it is indeed all that Wyden claims it is, furthered by the fact that the head of the Minerals Management is one Johnnie Burton who did the same thing to the state of Wyoming. We collect a lot of money from the extractive industries, but not what we should have under her tenure.
you go fella I would vote for you if i could
Shill Brian Williams on Evening News talking about “Republican Plan to take away tax breaks for big oil”. No coverage of this couragous Dem. Why am I not surprised. Must be FDL addiction!
Send Reid a fecalgram:

There is only one problem to cutting back on all these oil subsidies- the true cost of oil will start to emerge. And we may want to run away in disgust.
If we stop giving the industry subsidies, then they’ll have less money to find more oil. Less money to find more oil = less chance of finding new oil = less oil = higher oil prices = higher gas prices.
Oil exploration projects are increasingly risky
because they search in non-conventional (deep water/deep-land/hard to get to) areas.
Sure oil co’s are making a killing, but they aren’t finding new oil- we use 4+ barrels for every barrel we find — how is that for sustainable??.
Lee Raymond making $680 million is way out of line, so it isn’t like the oil companies are hurting for $$. BUT – you can’t take away those subsidies without that money needing to be replaced. Oil company profits go directly to exploration and extraction is increasingly expensive.
Of course it all depends on the scale of things – if Exxon suddenly can’t pay out its $2/share earnings – no big deal. But when they stop spending $$ on exploration – if we haven’t found an alternate energy system – we’ll be dangling $$ in front of oil companies to feed our addiction.
Ben
It’s time we stop ALL taxpayer subsidies for oil. If the oil companies want to invest, fine. But we the people should look and move ahead. I’m willing to go through a touch transition period-aren’t you?Our reliance on oil is literally killing us.
we will be going through a tough transition whether we want to or not, as oil supplies continue to run thin. Any idea what we are transitioning to? Alternative energy is a four letter word when it comes to budget spending.
Ideally we need to start transitioning to a different fuel source BEFORE we are forced to. If we wait to long and are forced to transition off oil…there won’t be an alternative fuel in place to transition towards.
Ben
Watching the Republicans, defend their Bosses
in the oil industry is like a Greek Tragedy.
They are so sold out, they look like cheap Ho’s
with cheap lipstick, smeared around their lying
lips. This isn’t democracy, this is a pathetic
oligarchy, made up of well paid, and seldom
laid traitors. These bastards have completely
sold out the american people, republican and
democrat alike. So the republican voters are
sold out the worse, because they are fool enough
to think these leeches will stand up to the oil
companies. Losers.
Re: comment 5,
every time I hear a republican say up or down vote, I get the feeling that I’m being jerked off.
Oil company rapacity threatens the Republican majorities. Is it not in the companies’ interest to ratchet back the greed over the Summer, to protect the Party they have bought and paid for?
Glad there is still some do something Dems. What about the big money the Reps wont to give us wow while thier cronies get billons .That isn`t even a tank of gas for some .Anyone falling for it?
