And why would Karl Rove have leaked to Matt Cooper in the first place?

Likely for the same reason he leaked to Judith Miller and others.

As is verified by the evidence in this very post, Matt Cooper is no white knight. He understood neither his obligations as qa journalist, nor the integrity that comes with the job.

When he had to opportunity to testify before the Grand Jury on the leaker who exposed Valerie Plame — he refuesed. And he refused to publish the name of that leaker, though the whole country deserved at minimum that much.

Cooper did little to adequately serve his country, and had no sense of obligation to, in a time of crisis, no less.

Who knows? Rove’s attempts to hide contact with Cooper may actually serve the dual purpose of protecting Cooper.

It may sound counterintuitive, but if you protect one, you protect the other — so who’s to say Rove wasn’t protecting both and not so much just for reasons of self-preservation?

If you protect an asset, their usefulness will be preserved for a later date — even if it’s two years or five years or more into the future.

Woodward and Mitchell and Judith “Iscariot” Miller and Matt Cooper were chosen for a reason. And it wasn’t because they were good journalists.

Cooper may have friends, and has even written a couple decent articles since testifying — but none of that is evidence that he’s a reformed character.

“The prosecutor pressed Cooper to then explain how he knew about Wilson’s wife in the first place, and Cooper said he would not answer the question because it did not involve Libby, the sources said.”

Steyn writes for the NRO, WSJ, etc.

Lileks is TV critic for AEI.

No coincidences there, Howie… ptooey. I guess you showed yer true colors.

I could go on a hellacious rant, but will spare the gentle readers here who have been already tormented enough this morning with lack of access to FDL.

Kurtz doesn’t get out of the bubble much, huh?
I barely have time to read a smidgen of what I want, but there is NO WAY Kurtz can say Digby or Billmon, Jane or Christy haven’t written some lyrical and well-crafted pieces.
God, mediocre, jealous little people are such a bore.
