Who's that knocking at my door?
Where were you in 1992? Right Said Fred scored a big campy hit with I'm Too Sexy. Lotus 1-2-3 was the most popular spreadsheet program. Bill Clinton distinguished himself from the sclerotic Democratic Party by criticizing a comment by a mostly unknown African American rapper to signal to the rest of America that he was a different kind of Democrat, willing to run from the party's base to govern from the center as a pragmatic, Southern (white) man. His genius was he could do this while still being hailed later by novelist Toni Morrison as the "first black president."
As Jane pointed out yesterday, some Democrats are still trying to play obsolete Lotus 1-2-3 politics in 2006. Roots Project members from New York got a lesson in old school, 1992 Democratic politics last week. . .and they have it on an awesome, must-see video. Welcome to the digital age, senators!
Roots Project New York members had been trying for over a week to make an appointment to meet with staff in both of their senators' offices. Here's their summary of their attempts on April 21st to visit the people who ostensibly work for them:
DIFFERENCE WAS NIGHT AND DAY
The intrepid four were: Lee, Jay, Sari, and Julie. Julie had her camera.
SENATOR CLINTON’S OFFICE
All visitors in Senator Clinton’s office building must be announced. We told the security guard that we wanted to go up and meet with her staff. We did not have an appointment despite our efforts to try and get one. There was much give and take. Finally, the security guard called Clinton’s office and told us to wait.
We waited 10 minutes, and then called ourselves. The young woman who answered the telephone told us that we could not come up without an appointment. I explained that, beginning on April 11, we have requested appointments, but have received a run around about getting one. Out of frustration, we are in the building to meet with someone. The young woman insisted we needed an appointment, apologized for the run around, and offered to have someone come downstairs and pick up any written material. She also stated that policy issues were handled out of Washington. My response to that was it is unacceptable that I, as a constituent, must travel to DC to meet with my Senator to discuss policy. Again, she apologized.
Finally, she took my name and telephone number and assured me that someone will call.
Frankly, I won’t hold my breath.
SENATOR SCHUMER’S OFFICE
Visitors at Senator Schumer’s building also had to be announced. We were immediately whisked to his office. We met with the Sam Schaeffer, Director of Intergovernmental Affairs. He was expecting us as our press release had appeared on the AP Daybook. Schumer himself had asked about us that morning as a result of the Daybook entry. We thanked him for meeting with us without an appointment. We informed him that the group came together electronically. Schaeffer wanted to know about the group and its structure. We informed him that we do not have a group, per se, but were seeing him as constituents brought together via Firedoglake.
We stressed two points: Congress must demand pre-authorization prior to any military intervention in Iran. Schumer must sign on to the censure bill. He pointed out that Schumer has a bill to put the eaves dropping program before the Supreme Court. Jay agreed that was an important step. No response to the censure endorsement.
There was also something we said that hit home. We pointed out that every single senator, from Schumer to Orrin Hatch knows that the president is breaking the law and violating the separation of powers. And we said to Sam that he knows it too, whether he can say so or not.
CONCLUSION
I strongly recommend that constituents go to Clinton’s office and demand face time with an aide. It is ridiculous to go to DC, unless of course you are planning to go. That we cannot discuss ‘policy’ questions in New York is the height of arrogance. I also recommend posting your experiences at the blog of your choice.
Schumer’s people are responsive in that they will meet. Whether anything comes of the meeting remains to be seen.
Lotus 1-2-3 politics don't work anymore. They've been supplanted. The Republican Party has adjusted to the Democrats' DLC/1990's playbook and has been winning ever since. Why do so many Democrats and donors to Democrats insist on an approach to politics that has manifestly failed, having created a party that, to the wider public, stands for nothing?
Chuck Schumer is no lover of the grassroots, but he does love to manage his press, and it's no accident New Yorkers got a warm reception from his office after putting out a press release about their intended visit the night before.
His obscure, go-nowhere proposal to bring SCOTUS review to the NSA warrantless wiretapping program was designed to give him the appearance of action while undermining Feingold's censure motion. Schumer is on the record in his desire for Democrats not to fight too aggressively before the midterms, so as not to provide a target for Republican attacks. He is afraid of waking up the Republican base but confident the Democratic base requires no attention. Moreover, he was personally furious with Feingold for deviating from the team script at the time he dropped the censure proposal, even though the Ports Dubai story had already run out of steam. Schumer's office warmly received his New York visitors, and for that, he deserves credit for having his people do their jobs. But Chuck Schumer is still practicing outdated Lotus 1-2-3 politics.
It's all rather sad, actually, because these people don't yet understand what Joe Lieberman is rapidly learning. I'm Too Sexy may get some laughs at the karoake bar, but its day has come and gone. The new, Democratic politics of definition - standing for things like fairness, opportunity, the common good and investment in the future - is taking off through the grassroots all over the country. The time for barricading the gate is over. Proposing barricades on the border is a sloppy attempt to create a Sister Souljah issue, and one that will likely backfire.
Regular people - constituents, like those who comprise the Roots Project - are poised to overwhelm tired old hands like Mercenary Mouthpiece Mike McCurry and the soulless consultants who counsel Lotus 1-2-3 politics. Glenn Greenwald writes about this today, and it's worth a full read (why not preorder Glenn's book, How Would A Patriot Act?):
As for Feingold's explanation, it is easy to see exactly what he is describing. Democratic consultants attacked and tried to kill his resolution even after it was announced and had been widely publicized. Is there any doubt at all that had he consulted in advance with Democrats, all that he would have confronted would be efforts to dissuade him from doing anything?
As Crashing the Gate chronicles, and as Feingold implied, the Democratic Party has all but turned itself over to highly risk-adverse, overly calculating political consultants who have drained the party of ideals, passion, energy and life. Almost all of them inspire nobody, because they so transparently lack any governing principles or passion about anything. They embrace only those ideas which are guaranteed in advance to be popular, and they run from ideas they believe in and that are right whenever they are told -- by the bookish, soul-less consultants who dominate them -- that those ideas are risky or unpopular. And everyone sees this and knows this.
People are getting together to overturn the politics of vacuity in many ways, but if you'd like to join your own in-state neighbors in the Roots Project, send an email to stateproject at gmail dot com with (only!) your home state in the subject line. If you can, please include your blog commenting name or kos user name in the body of your note.
Your neighbors look forward to hearing from you.
UPDATE: Now here's an example of a fighting Dem. More of this please, Minority Leader Pelosi! When you, our representatives, step out and lead, we will be more than happy to praise and support you.
UPDATE II (11:50 AM PST 04-27-2006): Members of the New York Roots Project inform me that, following the publication of this post, Senator Clinton's New York office has indeed contacted them to arrange a meeting to discuss constituent concerns. The locals are delighted this has occurred, and hopefully the future will bring us more good news on the New York front. An aside to national politicians dealing with Roots Project members and the blogosphere: to get good buzz on blogs like this one, the best thing to do is show responsiveness and genuine engagement with constituents. Here at FDL, we don't intend to print statements from political offices relevant to Roots Project action, since the Roots Project is not run through this blog. Roots Project chapters create their own agendas and communicate their progress to us for publication consideration. At this blog, in cooperation with Crooks and Liars and Unclaimed Territory, we simply provide resources and ideas (i. e., this blog is not "the decider."). I, for one, want more than anything to report good news. The update directly above about Leader Pelosi's recent words is but one example of our eagerness to report when Democrats show strong leadership. -- Pachacutec

Fitz me daddy, eight to the bar.
I can’t wait til you see the video, once I have a link to it.

Sad or no, I have the Right Said Fred album….
Hooray for NY FDLers! Your persistence is most inspiring…
Moe says MORE MORE MORE
ok — i am out of the loop ;-P
who is KITT?
this extends the discussion we were having yesterday about Hillary. I guess I can appreciate that moderate centrists may need someone like her, but I sure don’t have much respect for her. There is nothing there you can’t get from a Republican and I want a candidate who is ready to make things happen in an outside the box, progressive way, not call ten committees to tell her what to say. I think the country is ready for a female president and that would be great, but I don’t think people should or would vote for Hillary just to achieve that historic goal. We need a Feingold or Gore to light a fire under Dems who have lost faith and to proceed with investigating the war and its crimes and criminals while energizing the country for renewing our committment to democracy.
I’m too fitzy for my shirt
I heart sharkbabe … on the catwalk, on the catwalk.
Sharkbabe and Dru– nice fitz-a-lingo!!! Thanks to the 2 of you, I now have 2 songs playing in my head to replace all the other junk ;-)
It wasn’t only Sister Souljah. Remember Clinton hanging Lani Guinier out to dry after nominating he for Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights in late 1993. After she was branded as anti-constitutional and a quota queen by the right, he withdrew her nomination saying he didn’t know about her writing. And, despite the fact that her writings presented many inspired ideas about how to make our political system more representative and democratic.
The video is AMAZING. It’s absolutely inspirational, makes me want to grab a camera and rush on down to my Senator’s office.
interesting stuff.
hate to rehash, but if you want to talk about oil politics, maybe you could link that huffington item I posted to show that the “shortage” in refinery demand is by design of the oil companies not the environmentalists.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/....._6980.html
Thanks and keep up the good work.
Right said Fred at 13 — Lani is a colleague/acquaintance of mine…. Her treatment (and Zoe Baird’s as well) was reprehensible. Think it had anything to do with their lack of a penis?
Why should Hillary’s NY staff be available to her constituents? She’s a mega-worldwide-celebrity-rockstar, people. Try Ticketmaster next time.
Seriously, that REALLY pissed me off to read.
Video link is live: refresh the page and have a look!
ppirt#9 - KITT was the car from “Knight Rider”.
The whole thing with the soulless consultants and the DLC was well-displayed with the Daily Show bit where Hackett was asked not to run because he didn’t fit “the matrix.” You assume these things are massaged somewhat for humour, but there’s clearly some truth there.
My mom is an upstate NY, Methodist-turned-Catholic, DAR, civil-war style republican. She really hates Bush, loves Spitzer and finds Hillary “distateful.”
OT - Sorry if this was mentioned in a previous thread, but I just noticed that Glenn Greenwald’s book is at #24 in the Amazon sales rank.
Nice work!
Wrt #9,IIRC,there was a poster complaining about us doing the Fitz thing at the start of new threads. His name was Kitt.
Dems have the problem of trying to spin/sound bite with truth while their adversary can lie and not get called on it.
Video link in the intro text is wrong.
.
PHENOMENAL article!!!!
The most perfect little corner of the whole thing was THIS:
“…the Democratic Party has all but turned itself over to highly risk-adverse, overly calculating political consultants who have drained the party of ideals, passion, energy and life. Almost all of them inspire nobody, because they so transparently lack any governing principles or passion about anything. They embrace only those ideas which are guaranteed in advance to be popular, and they run from ideas they believe in and that are right whenever they are told — by the bookish, soul-less consultants who dominate them — that those ideas are risky or unpopular. And everyone sees this and knows this.”
There can be no more succinct, accurate, cut-through-the-bullshit description of the heart of the Democrats’ seemingly endless problems than this. It’s like somebody here said yesterday… they simply refuse to take a stand on anything at all unless somebody tells them that it’s polling well.
If you want to know why the Democrats can’t campaign or govern their way out of a thin wrapping of moist Kleenex, here it is. And I hope to God that they break out of this trap sooner than later, or this country is sunk.
The video is terrific; the constituents are stars! Bravo! Too bad for Hilary; her failure, her loss. . . entirely.
To our friends in New York:
You are fantastic!!!
That was a well-done and eloquent video, and I am very grateful for your efforts with Schumer and Clinton. I look forward to hearing about the follow-up with Clinton….
Absolute Patriots.
I redid the video link, so it should be ok. It takes you to C&L where you can choose Windows Media or Quicktime.
I was 8 years old in 1992.
Matt, you were raised well and are making a difference by being politically involved. Good on ya.
Bustedknuckles#22.
True - Knight Rider was off the air by ‘92, I’m sure.
the Democratic Party has all but turned itself over to highly risk-adverse, overly calculating political consultants who have drained the party of ideals, passion, energy and life.
Ummm . . . not quite.
The Democratic Party has been taken over by highly risk-averse, overly calculating Democratic politicians who have drained the party of ideals, passion, energy and life. These risk-averse politicians then hire consultants who tell them what they want to hear.
Remember — John Kerry hired Bob Schrum; Schrum did not hire Kerry.
Don’t know about the politics, but Lotus 1-2-3 could do anything substantive that anyone is likely to do with the current Microsoft product, without all the bloat. Plus, it let you do it with all ten fingers, without rolling that goddamn mouse around.
I think you got your analogies backwards, and that these guys are like the people who let Power Point inject fancyfont titles and bouncing icons into their talking points, where a Commodore 64 running SuperCalc, or maybe a pointer and easel, would get the idea across.
ppirt, wrt Bustedknuckes in 22, that’s my understanding too.
My laptop hurts when it tries to load the video, so sadly I can’t see.
I’ll just remind everyone that the first time we showed up at Kerry’s office, we got the same security-guard treatment. Round about the third time we tried, they got the message. Persistence pays off!
I signed up with Roots Project and those bitchez never got back to me. They don’t even have a website. What’s up with that?
First of all, let me make it clear that I’m not a fan of Sen Clinton’s, but I do have to say that the two times I needed face time with her staff (representing a grassroots advocacy group I was volunteering with at the time, which had been critical about her position on particular legislation), I got it on one phone call’s notice. Both in NY and in DC. And when she walked in during one meeting, the senator herself was completely briefed. Maybe she’s changed over the last year or two, but I’ve found her to be quite accessible to the Democratic public, even while they may disagree with most of her positions.
Tim Wayne -
What state are you in?
E-mail Pacha and he will send you the invite.
Oh, that video was just great! Bravo! And one of your most trenchant & kickass posts ever, Pach.
Awesome video!!! Congratulations you intrepid 4 FDL’ers!!! Bravo and poo on Hill.
Tim Wayne: If your email got lost in the rush, then a little understanding of the volunteers who are working to put this together might be in order. But with that attitude, it might be best for you to remain outside. Your neighbors may not appreciate it.
Expanding on Uh…Celm #25,
Another plug for basic marketing science…(tired of this yet?)
You have to have a clear message that hits the target customer exactly where they make the buying decision. A compelling reason to buy my product. A simple message that can be grasped in less than five seconds. A true message that is evidently true, not just claimed true. And the story must be told in a way that is attractive and makes the target customer feel good about themselves making the choice to choose my product.
Wishy-washy bullshit ’safe’ statements and campaigns convince no one at all that they should choose our candidate/position/bill over any other. We end up letting the other side define us.
If we’re all going to be bozos on this bus, by God let’s make sure everyone knows exactly what kind of bozos we are, right? (Thanks Clem for taking me back to Firesign Theatre)
zennurse -
Thanks. Most of my liberalness is something I learned on my own, or using my late mother as my guiding light.
I thought you might be interested in where the group Right Said Fred got its name. Back in 1962, there was a British hit of the same name (it’s out there on mp3 if you’re interested) about some piano movers.
We visited “home” in 1962 when I was 3. We had a copy of this record. For a long time I thought it was a song about my grandfather who was also called Fred (and my relatives were Cockney, they sounded just like the singer).
I’ve included the lyrics below. The situation described might see awfully familiar. *g*
Right Said Fred (Cup of Tea)
(Myles Rudge, lyrics & Ted Dicks, music)
“Right,” said Fred, “Both of us together
One on each end and steady as we go.”
Tried to shift it, couldn’t even lift it
We was getting nowhere
And so we had a cuppa tea and
“Right,” said Fred, “Give a shout for Charlie.”
Up comes Charlie from the floor below.
After strainin’, heavin’ and complainin’
We was getting nowhere
And so we had a cuppa tea.
And Charlie had a think, and he thought we ought to take off all the handles
And the things wot held the candles.
But it did no good, well I never thought it would
“All right,” said Fred, “Have to take the feet off
To get them feet off wouldn’t take a mo.”
Took its feet off, even took the seat off
Should have got us somewhere but no!
So Fred said, “Let’s have a cuppa tea.”
And we said, “right-o.”
“Right,” said Fred, “Have to take the door off
Need more space to shift the so-and-so.”
Had bad twinges taking off the hinges
And it got us nowhere
And so we had a cuppa tea and
“Right,” said Fred, ” Have to take the wall down,
That there wall is gonna have to go.”
Took the wall down, even with it all down
We was getting nowhere
And so we had a cuppa tea.
And Charlie had a think, and he said, “Look, Fred,
I get a sort of feelin’
If we remove the ceilin’
With a rope or two we could drop the blighter through.”
“All right,” said Fred, climbing up a ladder
With his crowbar gave a mighty blow.
Was he in trouble, half a ton of rubble landed on the top of his dome.
So Charlie and me had another cuppa tea
And then we went home.
Spoken:(I said to Charlie, “We’ll just have to leave it
Standing on the landing, that’s all
Trouble with Fred is, he’s too hasty
Never get nowhere if you’re too hasty.”)
(c)1962, by Myles Rudge (lyrics) & Ted Dicks (music)
I got a letter from the great “Decider” last week. Seems he thinks he knows what is best for America and is going to tell me.
Moron.
I thought you guys might enjoy it. It inspired me to write a few letters myself.
Check it out if you like. I am sure it will inspire you to ask questions of your legislators that you might not have thought of so far…Like: “Why haven’t you moved to Impeach the Chimperor?”
http://usagenda.blogspot.com/2.....-bush.html
I just watched the video. After they were told they could leave any written materials at the lobby and one of Senator Clinton’s aides would come down to get it, one of the women (out of earshot) mentioned something like, “Really? Oh my god…and do they have, like, anthrax-sniffing dogs?” Funny line.
But kind of mean to the dogs, if you think about it.
1,033 DAYS AND THE KILLING GOES ON!!!
Sharkbabe,
Thanx, I think I’m in love again, you’re takedown of Slickhillary is perfect…I am afraid though, that she and Chuck Schumer could take the entire national Democratic Party down by pullin’ New York. I don’t trust ‘er and I certainly don’t trust Schumer and AIPAC who hold Hillary’s garters up.
Thanx again ‘babe…I needed that.
KEEP THE FAITH, THE RIGHTS YOU SAVE COULD BE YER OWN!!
Bob -
I cannot believe that’s how they do business as senators. Call me an idealist but I’d jump at a chance to meet with constituents, and instruct my aides/security detail not to be a-holes either.
The refusal to speak directly to constituents is completely unaccaptable and cowardly. I am sure lobbyists have no trouble getting face to face meetings.
I never even get replies to my metters and faxes. These people are cowards.
This totally frosts me:
“The Globe continues: “US Senator Bill Nelson, a Florida Democrat and an opponent of the policy, said at least 13,000 packages containing pharmaceuticals were intercepted during the first months of the campaign. The seizures took place in a half-dozen mail inspection facilities across the country…(snip)”
Former Pfizer VP and MD writing the truth about Medicare D. Where did those folks’ money go? Those people who are living on scrimpy Social Securtiy checks? Down the tubes, that’s where. Certainly the feds wouldn’t consider reimbursing them for stealing thier meds. And what if those meds were for antiseizure or cardiac meds? Oh well.
I’m glad to see this is continuing to be addressed and by someone with cred on the issue. Med D is just a huge insurance and drug company subsidy, it has nothing to do with helping elders and the disabled. I’m so grateful my son isn’t on meds now, and I think if he needed them, I’d just pay out of pocket rather than support this program.
Perhaps the Roots project needs to bring the media along ANG annouce a press conference???
Just wanted to share a story from the trenches:
Last night my wife and I were discussing politics (she reads HuffPo but not FDL), as I had just come home from a discussion group of George Stephanapolous, Wesley Clark, Tom Ridge, and David Kay. I was really impressed with what Wes Clark and David Kay had to say, and was saying that I liked Clark in 2008.
She said “I hope democrats can pull their heads out of their asses. I really don’t want Hillary to be nominated … or Lieberman (makes puking jesture)…”
She went on “Why is the democratic party always afraid to take a stand or select leaders that people actually want…” and then she went off on how Hillary seems to be annointed just because she was Bill’s wife.
There are a lot of people out there waiting for leaders to be individuals first, proposing what they believe are actual solutions. Let the winner win because their ideas won the contest. Not by adopting an argument because it could be a winner, and then winning. This is what used to be called FAKE. And today, there are more fakes than ever.
Great video, gang — really fantastic work. *sniffle* Makes me truly proud of citizen patriots everywhere. Can you feel it? The winds of change, baby, winds of change.
They should realize ‘Catch 22′was satire and not an organization manual.
Yeah Blister, and I could do everything on vi that I use Word for, and troff handled formatting just fine, and all with a PDP-11/70 running BSD4.3–probably with less memory than I have in my phone–and an ADM-31 terminal. Printer sucked, though.
I LIKE my mouse!
Also I just love how the guy was like “what company are you from?”
High-powered politics in a nutshell right there.

“Citizen Patriot” — that should have been my pseudonym!
As you all can tell, I am really creative. “Matt O.” was the best I could do… how lame huh!?
speaking of kenny boy, good blog here.

Ouch. Double ouch.

OT - but they are STILL selling flashdrives from the base in Afghanistan.
http://www.latimes.com/news/na.....ck=tothtml
More scary - this has been going on for a bit.
One shopkeeper said he had been selling pilfered American military flash drives for four years, mostly to young Afghan computer users looking for cheap equipment, but also to some foreigners.
Hilary == AIPAC.
Rahm == AIPAC.
I think Matt is on to something. What if next trip they identify themselves as a lobbyist and a couple of interns with Pfizer, Walmart, Exxon, . . . ? ;-) Compare and contrast?
Mary -
Yes ma’am, born November 11, 1984 - Veterans’ Day.
May I suggest that the Sista Soulja incident and the Lani Guinier fiasco are two different things.
When Clinton came out against Sista Soulja he wasn’t defining himself as centerist, especially since 99% of centerists had never heard of her. He was signaling that he was not going to fall into the trap of running a campaign that assumed that relied on diffuse interest groups without core unifying principles that sadly has been a bigger problem for Democrats than it has for Republicans. In short he was doing something Kos and others who want the Dems to stop living in the 1970’s, let alone the 1990’s, are advocating right now.
By contrast, when Clinton dropped Lani Guinier he was showing the dark underside of his political talents that we saw all too often during his eight years, except when he was campaigning: a failure to think a defensive and offensive strategy before preesenting a contentious issue or nomination. Time and time again that opened the door for the rightwing noise machine, and led to a speedy retreat at great cost to larger issues even as it usually kept Clinton’s approvals in reasonable territory.
Citizen Patriot # 57 —
You can always change your handle — I’m still using my initials out of habit; started out as charles k at the DFA blog, which I still use at dKos.

True, but I have my own blog and people have cited some of my posts with “Matt O” or even my full name.
That’s like Clark Kent fighting crime using his Superman powers, and then donning the red cape as if people didn’t know who he was already.
Oh well. But I really do like that, “Citizen Patriot.” Doesn’t JC sign off that way?
I just watched the video. It would make a really good republican commercial talking about how out of touch Clinton is from her constituents.
She should be embarrassed.
“If we’re all going to be bozos on this bus, by God let’s make sure everyone knows exactly what kind of bozos we are, right? (Thanks Clem for taking me back to Firesign Theatre)”
Absolutely!! If we don’t remember to inflate our shoes before going outdoors, and if we don’t wear our red rubber noses and proudly invite the public to “squeeze the wheeze” (since many people like to) then how will they know we’re Bozos at all?
(And you’re most welcome. See ya on the Funway, pardner! Yippee-tie-one-on!!)
I just love the picture JC uses in this letter to my congressman, Richard Pombo (I am a California absentee voter).
Uh…clem #25 - Either the country will sink or we’ll start a new grassroots party to keep it afloat. Your post was right on, though!
Big pats on the back to the NY group. Way to go, guys! You make me proud to be progressive.
D
PS/OT About the oil? Iraq is putting out 900,000 fewer barrels a day since we took over (still wondering where that money is going, too), the Gulf is putting out 330,000 less a day since Katrina, Venezuela is down about 40,000 barrels a day, etc, etc - but only 14 CENTS per gallon is attributable to the actual rise in the cost per barrel. I believe the pure oil company profit is at 40-60 cents per gallon. Raymond needs a new pair of shoes!
I strongly recommend that constituents go to Clinton’s office and demand face time with an aide. It is ridiculous to go to DC, unless of course you are planning to go. That we cannot discuss ‘policy’ questions in New York is the height of arrogance. I also recommend posting your experiences at the blog of your choice.
well, clearly the problem is you didn’t have a big, fat check — you bet your ass someone on her staff would have made time then. (i’m a constituent — but will NEVER vote for her again)
tom chicago,
Is it jest me or does the fact that Chuck Schumer and Rahm Emmanuel control candidate selection AND the AIPAC money for Senate and House candidates and the AIPAC money is the biggest single source of funding for the national Democratic Party?
We simply hafta sweep both the house and the senate by margins enough to give the freshmen some choices when the big issues hit the floor. I have a recurrin’ nightmare of Rahm Emmanuel takin credit for a bare majority in the House and bein able ta cultivate enough of the freshmen ta take the speakership.
KEEP THE FAITH, NOT ALL DEMOCRATS ARE FASCISTS!!
OT, but this comment from R. McGeddon over at Atrios needs to be repeated far and wide.
Any bets on when a gallon of gas will overtake the minimum wage?
“what company are you from?â€
ROFL!
Awesome video, BRAVO!!!
Prof. Foland,
To be fair to Kerry’s office, though turned away the first time, the second visit was a good one. And now, having met his state director we are on tap for monthly meetings.
Imagine if we could do that in all 50 states, meet monthly with our senators’ aides? Eventually we might be able to right this sinking ship!
That’s what a roots project is all about.
P.S. Incomplete sentence in last post, the first sentence question should end “…scare the shit outta you too?”
Blister: Using TECO to edit files. (Actually, you still can: there’s a Windows version available!)
But, yeah, it’s more like a really crappy Powerpoint presentation, where they’ve done slides for the whole thing and then *read the slide text* to everyone as well.
Atrios gives Nancy Pelosi four ponies for her speech ripping Commander Codpiece for his do nothing energy policy, and the rubber stamp Republican enablers.
http://atrios.blogspot.com/200.....2383745032
We need to send Nancy some FDL luv!!!
“KEEP THE FAITH, NOT ALL DEMOCRATS ARE FASCISTS!!”
I’m not really so concerned that the Democrats are fascists as I am that they’re just schmucks.
Wow. Once again, I marvel at the ingenuity of FLDers. OMG — without the credibility of this website, I honestly would have thought that video was a hoax. (More accurately, I would have **hoped** it was a hoax 8(
I have relatives in New York state, and I suspect that expect video link will get lots of hits from the Rochester region after I send it off to some cousins.
Although I can sympathize with needs for security (particularly in Hillary’’s case), there’s no earthly reason for taxpayers and citizens to be treated with such disdain and insolence.
The video is worth 10 large Think Tank studies.
I’d sure like to a head count of the Congressional staffers hitting this video link tonight. Heeheehee…
Kudos to all involved in this brilliant little bit of Citizenship 2.0. ;-)))))

A push poll is a political campaign technique in which an individual or organization attempts to influence or alter the view of respondents under the guise of conducting a poll. Push polls are generally viewed as a form of negative campaigning.
I agree that our representatives should be held more accountable & responsive to us- but at this sad juncture in time I can’t see aiding the republicans one iota. Comparing Hillary, Bill and Schumer to republicans (”there is no difference”- ala Nadar) and helping tear them down is crazy. Our country may already be sunk thanks to the criminal morons of this administration - and Democrats who didn’t stick together or even vote. (Lieberman, however, is the exception!)
Contrary to what some here have interpreted, Hillary is not the target in this piece. Nowhere have I attacked her.
I did target an outmoded political strategy that unhappily still prevails, but is rapidly losing proponents.
Nowhere did I say Dems are no different from Republicans.
After her latest lurches to the right in pursuit of the mythical swing bigot voter, I’d be tempted to vote for a GOoPer — if it was Chuck Hagel. The others, not so much.
But I’d probably resist temptation, and vote for Hill.
Lani Guinier is required reading for anyone who claims to know what time it is.

Another wonderful post from Pach and all who made it popssible. I predict someday soon posts here will note fdlers running into lines of people waiting in senate offices.
The net is far from neutral as I can only load an fdl page in about 3 minutes on dial up. That said I think a camera in hand will intimidate in a good way, aides and other officials. Also in any meeting get the clerks opinion on what’s working etc. WTG

Atrios gives Nancy Pelosi four ponies for her speech ripping Commander Codpiece for his do nothing energy policy, and the rubber stamp Republican enablers.
That’s encouraging.
I swear if it’s a choice between Clinton and McCain, I’ll take my chances with McCain.
Clinton is arrogant to the point of being stupid.
Every e-mail from outside her state gets kicked back with the excuse, “Sorry, we only are interested in hearing from our constituents.”
And now it looks like even their constituents are having a hard time.
Well, dear senator, when you campaign for president, I’m sorry but I’ll have to support my favorite-son, Mark Warner.
How dare the president of the United States make a speech today in April, many, many, many months after the american people have had to undergo the cost of home heating oil. A woman told me she almost fainted when she received her home heating bill over this Winter. And when so many people making the minimum wage, which hasn’t been raised in eight years, which has a very low purchasing power have to go out and buy gasoline at these prices? Where have you been, Wr. president?
–Nancy Pelosi
Yeah, she did get down and dirty today!
CK in #77 was right. We should send her some FDL love. Especially since she got deservedly creamed when she posted a real lead baloon of a post over at DKos a few weeks ago. Maybe she got the message and took it to heart.
If it’s Clinton versus McCain, it’s no contest. Has to be Clinton.
Exactly right Pach, unfortunately.
“If it’s Clinton versus McCain, it’s no contest. Has to be Clinton.”
That’ll be a serious “Hold My Nose With An Industrial Clamp” sort of a vote for me, but after the ass-sucking display he’s put on for the past several years, no WAY does McCain ever get a vote from me.
The Democrats could nominate G.G. “Fling My Own Poo” Allin as their presidential candidate, and I still wouldn’t vote for McCain. Six years ago or so, McCain might have gotten a vote out of me if the Democrats put up too shitty a candidate, but not now and not at any point from here on in. McCain has just lost that much of my respect.
McCain is listening to Falwell this week. Hillary is not.
NY FDLers are my heros for the day! you guys SO rock. the video is brilliant….
.. as much as clinton frustrates me, please let’s not write her off - persistence may pay off! and this video is a great way to shame her (or her staff) into doing the right thing!
yeah!
Funny you should mention Lotus 123 right at the time I was reading Mitch Kapor’s blog (the founder of Lotus, and later a co-founder of the Electronic Frontier Foundation). Go to his blog,
http://blog.kapor.com/
And scroll down to his article on the architecture of politics. He proposes a Jeffersonian, in the open source spirit, political structure. Exactly like we see here on the blogs.
Mitch Kapor is prescient; take him seriously; ask him to do a diary here and on Huffpo. Please.
And also, go to the University of Virginia etext of Jefferson’s letters.

I’ve been lurking for weeks on another conputer. I stil have read FDL daily.
FDL rocks.
Does it have to be Hillary? A year ago I was a Hillary supporter, but I’m disgusted with her position on the war. I’m looking for the candidate that says we are getting out of Iraq now.
Isn’t it pretty damn arrogant to expect people to drop everything they are doing to meet with you? The population of NY is roughly 20 million. There’s now way Senators or any statewide official can meet all people who want to talk to them–they have work to do.
I can understand the frustration, but let’s be a little real here. Why are you entitled over EVERYONE else to get face time? I got my contacts to elected officials office by volunteering on their campaigns and my local county party. Nothing magic about it and not like it’s presented here at all. (FYI…there is a lot of grassroots action in the party at the county level.)
Relationships are built on respect and trust. You may be well meaning and polite and informative, but there are so many more that are rude. Shouldn’t there at least be some filter?
What is it with the AIPAC references? AIPAC only succeeds in influencing those things the US sees as in its interest. Jonathon Pollard would not be sitting in jail for the rest of his life if AIPAC was all powerful. Geez, you are getting my anti-semite feelers up.

Guess what? You can’t get a meeting in NY at all - not even a Clinton aide will meet with you. You have to go on a road trip to DC. That’s just f’n stoopid. They sure know how to cash my checks, so my reps damn well better meet with my bratty ass.
And if it’s arrogant to expect someone, anyone to meet with me, I’m one arrogant biiiitch.
From my reading of MAKETHEMACCOUNTABLE over the years the DLC corporate ‘ GOP Lite’ mavens are taking the Dem party way over to the lunar right and that these are UNpopular policies that are being pushed. If they were following the people and following the polls then they would NOT be doing this.
Draw a tight bead and pass the ( correct) ammo please. We may only get one clear shot at this.
Re - ‘…They ( Democratic Party political consultants ) embrace only those ideas which are guaranteed in advance to be popular…’
I use Lotus 1-2-3 (came as part of SmartSuite in an old IBM machine)and it works for me. Current Democratic congressional strategy; not so much.
There is an alternative to Hillary Clinton. Jonathan Tasini is the progressive, anti-war Democrat challenging her in the NY primary. He’d be happy to talk with you.

Hi Jane, People are sitting in at Senator Maria Cantwell’s office in Seattle as I type. They have been there through the night and a crowd is gathering outside. Check it out. Mike in Seattle
