Via Crooks & Liars, you too can watch Neil Young have his patriotism challenged by monosyllabic hair-sprayed ding dong Sibila Vargas on CNN who a) doesn’t know the title of the album she’s supposed to be interviewing him about and b) suggests he’s only doing a song called "Impeach the President" because he needs the publicty.
Let’s listen in on this hard-hitting interview:
VARGAS: I know that you`re also a Canadian, so people are going to talk about, well, you`re Canadian. I mean, does that give you less of a platform to say these things?
YOUNG: Maybe. I`m proud to be a Canadian. I`m proud to be living in the United States. I`m proud to be paying taxes here for 40 years. I`m proud of my three American children, my lovely American wife, my American family, and all of the people who have supported me here for 40 years.
It just so happens that I came down here because I`m an artist, and I came down here because, in Los Angeles, I could get things happening and so I could make it so people could hear me. That`s why I came down here. This is a great country, and I believe in this.
She’s fucking Seymour Hersch with Botox, that one.

The funny thing about the interview is could have been perfectly cast in Neil’s Greendale.
I’m fitzing too! I just need to…..
I mean she could have been cast
There’s more important stuff to worry about than Fitzing.I’m just saying….
I don’t worry about Fitzing.
I wanted to be the first one on this post, I kept hitting refresh but Sharkbabe beat me to it.
I’ve seen the wingers and the damage done…
Forty freakin’ years. The dude was down here WORKING before babysan was even a gleam in her daddy’s eye. Where do they get these numbskulls?

Sorry if this is old news (been away a couple days), but Michelle Malkin’s got a brand new blog, one that accepts comments.
You can read them, anyway. To comment, you have to register with a user name and valid email address (a registration passcode will be sent to your address).
Canadians have less of a platform? STFU!
How about kettle…meet pot. Why did she interview him…publicity for CNN??? If he’s chasing attention then so is CNN. Can we trade her to Canada?
If that’s the degree of depth she brings, she might be better suited for a story on the pretty spring tulips.
more observations here:

i watched that interview. it’s great! vargas makes a concerted effort to maintain that cherubic grin, all the while steaming inside bc young is systematically giving her the heisman on every offensive play she tries to pull out of her gucci purse.
I’m sure Sibila Vargas who questions a Canadian’s knowledge was very well informed about all the yellowcake in Iraq and voiced her opinion on how to handle that dire situation …
Thank God for Neil Young.
I can’t wait to hear this album…er CD. His lyrics (at his website) are fantastic. The song about the GIs missing their families is beautiful and the words to the title song kick ass. Please, everyone buy 2 when it comes out. Nothing would pisso ff the fascists more than to see it go right to number 1.
I read an interview with Neil in the Guardian when he was taking his Greendale tour to Europe. The word he kept using to describe the Bush Admin. was “immature”. I could tell something good was coming soon from “Shakey”.
This is going to be an historic CD. Thank goodness Neil was Mr. Cool with that interviewer. I would’ve lost it having to remind her what country we live in, sheesh!
VARGAS: I know that you`re also a Canadian, so people are going to talk about, well, you`re Canadian. I mean, does that give you less of a platform to say these things?
CAN ANY GROWN-UP HUMAN BEING ACTUALLY BE THIS VAPID!? JANE, TELL ME YOU’RE JUST MAKING THIS SHIT UP TO FUCK WITH OUR HEADS, PLEASE!!
AYIEEEEEGGGGGHHHHHH
Bullgoose: The title of that blog pretty much sums her up.
As for the OP, I wasn’t aware FOX News had spies in CNN.
Better questions for Neil Young:
Neil, when you heard “Sweet Home Alabama” by Lynyrd Skynyred for the first time, what were you thoughts?
Neil, in your song “After the Prelude” you wrote the words “look at Mother Nature on the run in the nineteen-seventies…” Would you say Mother Nature remains on the run?
Neil, if you had the chance to re-write “Heart of Gold” would you change that part about “growing old?”
I tried to watch the whole of that interview, but that snippy, prissy little @#$% got me so mad I couldn’t get through it all.
I thought NY was handling her real well, but I am still steaming!

Also, I am in contact with people in Ohio who are asking for help running parallel elections. Please post if you would like to help run a parallel election in Ohio. The training is set to begin soon.
I don’t understand how they choose “reporters” for these celebrity interview shows. This woman seems to have no empathy, clearly has nowhere near the mind required, and isn’t all that attractive. She’s also just like most of the people I see on these things.
Meanwhile, I’m hoping that there will be an MP3 or Ogg file soon.
This is what happens when you staff the media with a bunch of former Class Treasurers and Student Council Presidents. You get a bunch of people who know nothing and will happily put every single idea into the inverted pyramid structure they were taught in J-school. It’s the only way they know how to think. You can tell this reporter has never heard of Neil Young in her life, but has trunks and boxes of Justin Timberlake remixes.
Sad.
Granted, she conducted a lame interview, and she should be embarrassed. On the other hand she was asking Neil Young to reply to the same lame crap I’ve been reading in some of the comments on this site and Crooks and Liars whenever an artist comes out with a piece of music that is critical of Bush or what Bush is responsible for. I’ve read commenters on these boards say the exact same crap that the interviewer was questioning Young about. So, still, bimboish? for sure, but a little bit of devil’s advocate could have been in play in her thinking.
Although, when I saw how she responded to the guy at the news desk when he stated that it was ridiculous to think that Young had spoken out on this record for the money, that really made me have to wonder where her heart was.
Sorry you anti-fitzers, can’t help meself.
Always surprised at my luck, w/pokey lil’ dialup no less!
While Lynard Skynyrd has been touring for 30 years on “Sweet Home Alabama”, Neil has put out about 25 records.
Sorry ya’ll… I dsagree:
She seems to be laying out the criticisms, to give him a chance to respond… and he knocks every one out of the park. If she didn’t ask him, he wouldn’t get the chance. It’s not hard-hitting, but it’s competent as an interview (even if I don’t like her [I don’t- unrelated]).
I DO agree that Neil Young is VERY impressive. The answer to the “pre/post 9/11 mindset” meme is unbelievably good… should have been a speechwriter, or at least dropped a dime.
Can’t wait to give him 10 bucks for the album.
Neil looks like he could have given her a new hairdo with that look. Punaise, you crack me up.
Where do they find these numbskulls?
On the set of Let’s Play Stain The Couch #29.
AND ‘Dixie Chicks’!!!
I’m seeing orders big on Amazon, and (?) iTunes, too.
—–
ps –> was this interview timed with the release of latest JAR?
Everythingseemsoneat
Well, yeah, but you gotta remember that Lynard Skynyrd is mostly dead, so you gotta cut em some slack.
Can we trade her to Canada?
Hey-Canada doesn’t deserve that!
Um, does this mean you have a beef with Sy Hersch, or does it mean that not only is she a bimbo with a mic, she’s an ugly bimbo with a mic? Just wanting clarification. I love this blog, by the way.
Personally, I frown on Global Thermonuclear War.

Two big states begin impeachment proceedings using the obscure Rule 603 of Jefferson’s Manual. This rule allows impeachment proceedings in the House to be initiated by a state legislature.

Sharkbabe,I like to get in a good fitz too,but tonight I’ve got a issue on my mind, one brought up on this very blog and one seemingly important to us all.Yet here we are playing like kids in the comments box.
Sorry my axe to grind, carry on.
didn’t most of Lynard Skynard perish in a plane crash?
with Bush at 32% on the CNN poll, only 5 more points to go before he hits Alan Keyes (certifiably batshit crazy) 27% of the vote for Senator in Illinois. How soon then will it be before Keyes could skunk Bush in a GOP primary?
She’s fucking Seymour Hersch with Botox…
sounds painful for Seymour

Interesting! We just had the mayoral race Saturday in New Orleans. My boss is a rabid rethug. I checked the voicemail this morning to find a message from a local Republican asking them to vote for one of the Democratic candidates: Ron Forman
He is a classic DINO! He was a lifelong Republican until he decided to run for mayor in Democratic New Orleans! Luckily enough Dems called his bluff. We have two real Dems in the race now!
In any case I wonder if this may be part of a larger national strategy. Here the business people thought they could ordain the next mayor by backing Forman. Might similar groups in highly Democratic areas “put up or encourage” challenger Democrats to split the vote and give Rethugs a chance where they had none? I think we should watch for Rovian tricks since the Republicons are on the run.
Just thinking out loud really and there are so few posts that I can actually get a complete comment!
The ‘Mother Nature on the run..” quote is ‘After the Gold Rush’. (just for the ‘record’)
she was asking Neil Young to reply to the same lame crap I’ve been reading in some of the comments on this site and Crooks and Liars whenever an artist comes out with a piece of music that is critical of Bush or what Bush is responsible for. I’ve read commenters on these boards say the exact same crap that the interviewer was questioning Young about.
???????
Come on, Kitt. I know the silly fitz thing grates on your nerves – but seriously, wtf are you talking about?
Just to emphasize what Kitt said above. The final words spoken by the host were something to the effect of “Anyone who thinks Young is doing this for money or exposure is just stupid”. He was pretty much calling the interviewer on her shit, but I don’t know if anyone noticed.
Slothrop,Neil became good friends with Lynard Skynard later. Look at the cover of Skynards 4th album and one band member has a Neil Young T-shirt on.
I get real sick of these supposed liberals trying to poke holes in Mr. Youngs sincerity. Like saying he was a Reagan supporter because he bit some guys head off one time for blaming all his problems on Ronnie or because he recorded “Lets Roll” as a tribute to the people killed on 9/11. Hell, for writing “Ohio” he should be greeted with praise for life. Do a little research instead of searching for some small moment in his life where he was hypocritical or not idealogically pure.
Keep on rockin in the (barely) free world, Neil.
I’m starting to think President Bush has a tendency to fabricate.
Neil Young: My man. A real warrior. I saw him perform solo in Sacramento and with Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young so many years ago in my California formative years. Some things never change. Like real courage. This is what an actual Progressive looks like! Look at that face boys and girls. This IS, the real deal. Mr. Young shall forever be young.
Did you guys not watch the end of the video when the male model in the studio calls her on the “doing it to increase sales” bullshit? Watch the last 20 sec of the clip — and look at how she reacts. Jeez.
Neil, when you were doing acid every night in the lates 60’s and early 70’s, did you ever feel as if the very notion of boundaries such as “America” and “Canada” was a bogus construction of the deluded mind?
Neil Young: Heart of Gold
If you get a chance go see Jon. Demme’s new documentary shot during a two-night performance by Neil Young at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium. Filmed a week before Young was going to have an operation on a brain aneurysm that could have gone bad. The movie and concert is a loving, sentimental and musically brilliant tribute to the people and times in his life.
No impeachment songs, but the track “When God made me†clearly leaves room for all believers, and sanctions vision, truth and compassion in religion…several beautiful warm songs remembering his life and advancing his musical art..
@#$ these media wh0res that don’t get it.
Get the album “Prairie Wind†if you like his music.
We need artists like Young to help us find the truth.
By way of Raw Story:

Come on, Kitt. I know the silly fitz thing grates on your nerves – but seriously, wtf are you talking about?

______________
Maybe if you weren’t so hung up on your fitz thing towards me you might understand WTF I was talking about. Read any one of the comments boards on here or Crooks and Liars that are about the Dixie chicks, or Merle Haggard or Neil Young or Pink or maybe some others that I’m forgetting. You will see in those comments boards, Sharkbabe, people who pipe in with the exact same bullshit that Vargas was asking Young about. Most of us on these boards know that it’s lame rightwing, ignorant nonsense.
So, as some one else a few posts up from me pointed out, the lady actually gave Young an opportunity to respond to what a lot of disagreeable people have been saying or asking of him and the other musicians that I mentioned.
That’s WTF I was talking about.
Nice to hear Neil Young say what he thinks. I don’t know what the interview really thinks, and don’t particularly care. She asked some questions, and he gave great answers, and she let him talk. So, good interview, IMO. Chill.
I never met Young, although I know people who know people who know ol’ Neil.
Without knowing much else, I’d be willing to bet Young immediately dug Sweet Home, both for the great song it is, in general, and the reference to himself, in particular.
He was born ornery, and respects that quality in honest people. Which is why he (apparently) holds GW Bush in such contempt. You can’t be legitimately ornery with the silver spoon you sup with stuck up your ass between meals. Or something like that…
I meant “interview-er” why do I catch those things a split second after I click?
Sounds like Sibila Vargas had no idea who she was talking to. She was so ready with that UNPATRIOTIC” bs…….I love what he said about the 911 mentality. He said I have a 911 mentality but it is different from George Bush’s.
I wonder if she will pin this interview on her “I love me wall?”
Whoa, Kitt, Sharkbabe! You kids play nice.
Stop the violence! We’re all in the same gang!
DMM – sorry but if I couldn’t play a little I’d kill myself :)
I haven’t been keeping up with the Daily Show much but did see Neil there a couple weeks ago – I think he was promoting his concert movie – he was really low-key charming and cool.
(Boy am I old – made me think back to high school and skipping with my pals and getting stoned and listening to “If I Could Have Her Tonight”)
Neil handled Sibila Vargas. She even got slapped at the end of the interview by A.J. Hammer.
(Boy am I old – made me think back to high school and skipping with my pals and getting stoned and listening to “If I Could Have Her Tonightâ€)
Old? Dude, I did that yesterday. Without the getting high part.
Check out the ending of the clip:
Male host: “Anyone who thinks Neil Young is doing this for publicity or to sell records, I think *that’s* ridiculous.”
Vargas: “Hmm”
Slapped down by Neil Young and her co-host all in the course of one interview. A bad day for our little Ms. Vargas.
The last 20 seconds are priceless. The desk jockey comment translates as God you’re ignorant, and she knows it.

…and I’m gettin’ old, lookin’ for that pot ‘o gold.
I just keep looking at stuff
I just got back from a Deval Patrick (Dem. candidate for Gov. in Mass.) gig near Boston. It was very interesting — everything he said is pretty much what we all say. Leadership is about ideals and chracter, dedcision making is a process of becoming deeply informed and then choosing, public education is the most important investment a state can make….
But the most interesting part of the evening was a discussion about Rev. William Sloane Coffin who was a family friend of the hosts. At one point my friend (the host) said, “Everyone was always attacking him for his anti-war stance and his preaching against corporate homogenization, but what they sang at his memorial service was patriotic songs — America the Beautiful, God Bless America — things like that. Bill was a patriot who opposed policy.”
That is how I think of you all: Patriots who oppose policies.
Peace out.
There was a good Neil Young interview on Fresh Air a while back.
damn, when aj hammer gets the upper hand, you’ve really outlived your usefulness…
she had no fucking clue who he was .. somebody’d handed her a bunch of questions (actually commentary) and sent the little chippy off
Thanks for this comment on the clip, Jane. Anyone who has followed Neil Young’s career KNOWS he doesn’t do records for sales. He earns a nice living and has done so for quite a while; more power to him. That’s bought him the freedom to make the records he wants to make, say what he wants to say. Remember his go-round with Geffen in the early ’80’s? He did a country record (”Old Ways”), with fiddles, banjos, mandolins and such. Geffen thought he was getting a bunch of high-penetration crazy Horse records, not something with so little marketability. So he sued!
I was a bit disappointed with Neil when he came out for Reagan. But Neil Young is the real deal, and says just what he thinks.
And the dude slapping the knuckleheaded botox bimbo was priceless!
Thanks again, Jane! I’m a big fan.
anybody seen norske or crc? anyway my philosophical question of the night is why does God create a world where we love our children more than life itself and then rip our hearts out when they grow up and get married and move away why
Sorry, but these tv idiots annoy me to death. Which is why I never watch them. If it weren’t for blogs, I’d be in blissful ignorance of em completely!

I don’t understand your comment, Sharkbabe. I still don’t think you understood what I was talking about. It doesn’t have anything to do with a “perception”. I was stating a fact.

Heads up, folks. While this Vargas girl does the airhead thing, we got some noise on the trip wire. Regime change? That’s what the WH wants…so what’s their plan??? And if splintering takes place among factions….any of this sound familiar?

Western pressure irks average Iranians By Angus McDowall, Contributor to The Christian Science Monitor
Mon Apr 24, 4:00 AM ET
TEHRAN, IRAN – Kaveh Ahmadi, a taxi driver and veteran of the 1980-88 war with Iraq, was quivering with indignation as he wove his aging Iranian-made Paykan at high speed through the heavy evening traffic of Iran’s capital, Tehran. An ad on the side of the road read “Nuclear energy is our indisputable right,” a slogan now seen frequently on television and at public events.
“I’ve got two Iraqi bullets in my leg,” he says. “It was Western countries that supported [ Saddam Hussein] when he used chemical weapons against us. Now they destroy Iraq and lecture us on human rights. America killed more than a hundred thousand people when it dropped atomic bombs on Japan, but they won’t even let us have nuclear energy.”
…The threat of Western sanctions or military action has worried some here. Others say the government uses it to divert attention away from economic woes. Still, Western pressure for the most part has inspired widespread anger and defiance.
“I can’t see why others in the world can benefit from the use of nuclear energy but we shouldn’t,” says Hasan Mesbahi, a retired government employee. “If there is a military attack or sanctions, we should resist, defend ourselves, and put up with hardship.”
He was speaking in the Ekbatan neighborhood near the airport in the west of Tehran… Because people from many different social classes and backgrounds live there it is a good place to test opinion in a country where polling is infrequent and often inaccurate.
“It is very difficult to gauge if there is any opposition to the nuclear program,” says Sadegh Zibakalam, professor of political science at Tehran University. “But all the indicators are that many people, including those who oppose the Islamic regime, tend to support the program. In a sense it has become an emotive nationalistic issue for Iranians like supporting their football team. Western opposition has actually benefited the hard-liners here.”

Old man take a look at my life
I’m a lot like you
I need someone to love me
the whole day through
Ah, one look in my eyes
and you can tell that’s true.
I’ve always enjoyed Neil Young’s music, and I’m glad he is getting his message out with Living with War. Vargas, I think, was just happy to get a street interview, regardless of her vacuous questions. I’d suggest that *all* tabloid style “news” programs have the same 5th grade level of questions, and Neil smacked her down repeatedly, answering her with heart and plain sincerity.
America has been dumbed down for over twenty years in regards to television “news”. For which I am eternally grateful for the internet.
egregious, 75:”why does God create a world where we love our children more than life itself and then rip our hearts out when they grow up and get married and move away why?”
Life has no choice but to try to perpetuate itself. Children are the vehicle for doing this. It has very little to do with how you feel about it. Sounds cruel doesn’t it? You bet.
Anyway, I’m with you. I have two married daughters, 3 grandkids.

Neil Young=integrity.
The new album will be streaming (for free) from his website starting this Friday/28th.

Long may you run, Neil.
Nos. 28 and 47: what I took away from the interview is that this is indeed a “monosyllabic hairsprayed ding dong” (Jane… if you rocked any harder, you’d break all known seismographs!! That was just a goddamned museum piece, ROFLMFAO!).
Ms. Vargas has no real political convictions, because, like so many young bubbleheaded media careerists, she’s “not INTO politics”. Sadly, she owns no… um, what’s his name again, Neil Young?.. CD’s, either. Say, what a combination.
So she asks him the MSM-friendly questions about whether he thinks his songs are treasonous, that her producer pipes into her IFB, and thanks Neil gushily after she insults his intelligence.
Anchor is somewhat more intellectually equipped, AND aware of who Neil Young is and what he means to popular culture. Stunned for a second, he reacts by saying, essentially, “You dumb twat! Could you have MADE a stupider statement, on live international television?!?”
Watch her reaction to that. Blank. “Linda” character on “Becker”. Didn’t even realize she was being dissed by her screen partner. “Uh-huh.”
I tell you, that anchor went out and knocked back a few after the broadcast, and asked the beertender, “How the FUCK did I get into this racket?” Precious.

Found this E&P article a while back- never posted the link- but my first news about the NY album. Never knew before about NY’s dad. (Also just found related link).
http://www.editorandpublisher……1002344436
===Neil Young, Son of Famed Reporter, Records “Impeach the President” Song
NEW YORK As an E&P “Pressing Issues” column recently noted, rock star Neil Young is the son of a famed Canadian journalist, so it should not surprise many that he recently recorded a song in California with a very reportorial — or at least pundit — feel to it. ===
http://www.editorandpublisher……1002312625 ===Neil Young and Dad: Writin’ in the Free World
–Before specializing in sports, he covered World War II from London for The Canadian Press wire service, as well as the Kennedy assassination. He frequently appeared on the “Hockey Night in Canada” Saturday night telecasts, which I rarely missed growing up just across the border in Niagara Falls, N.Y. So I probably watched Neil’s father before I ever heard or heard of his son. (Given this hockey connection, it’s surprising Neil didn’t title one of his greatest songs, “Hello Cowgirl in the Stands.”)
And how about this: Scott Young gave up his newspaper career in the early 1980s, dismayed by what he saw as a bad trend in the journalistic profession — the use of “unnamed sources.” So, like his son, he was a bit ahead of his time.
When his father died last year, Neil said that he had learned from his father, “The most vivid way to get an idea across was to lay oneself bare in the knowledge that others would identify with the bareness, the sometimes painful truth.” One of his most haunting songs begins, “Old man, look at my life, I’m a lot like you were,” although reputedly inspired by another older fellow.===

As a proud Canadian, descended from proud Americans, who has lived and worked in the U.S. and would do so again if the circumstances were right…I find the jingofied argument that ‘non-Americans have a reduced weight of opinion on matters involving American acts in the global theatre, due to their reduced American-ness’ not only specious in the extreme but offensively paternalistic, also.
Anyone holding such sentiment is free to take a spinning ride on their own thumb ’til they can’t spin no more.
Still, such isolationism carrying ignorance’s water should be expected from those who “just have to look good, and don’t have to be clear”.

Jane, I think you’ve gone over the line on this one. She asks good questions. Then she gives him a lot of time to answer them. At one point, she says that she spoke to people who were among the crowd that he said gave him a standing ovation. She says “they said it was very emotional, an emotional rideâ€, acknowledging the strong feelings he taps into.
This is a good interview. She doesn’t agree with him, but the only time I became sure of that was in her reaction to the host backing him up. This is just professional journalism. I think you need to cut her a break.

Sigh. And to the person who posted something saying the Illinois legislature begins impeachment proceedings, don’t I wish! But alas, the Illinois legislature, with both sides controlled by Democrats, hasn’t even decided whether to discuss the impeachment resolution.

KIRKUK, Iraq — Hundreds of Shiite Muslim militiamen have deployed in recent weeks to this restive city — widely considered the most likely flash point for an Iraqi civil war — vowing to fight any attempt to shift control over Kirkuk to the Kurdish-governed north, according to U.S. commanders and diplomats, local police and politicians.
Until recently, the presence of the militias here was minimal. U.S. officials have called the Shiite armed groups the deadliest threat to security in much of the country. They have been blamed for hundreds of killings amid mounting sectarian violence in central and southern Iraq since the bombing of a revered Shiite shrine in February.

Geez, I’d forgotten. Young did endorse Reagan, didn’t he?
Well, I once thought Bill Walsh was making a BIG mistake benching Steve DeBerg and starting Joe Montana.
Still… Reagan?

VG – Stills song – lyrics here:

I sing it in my head often – all too often
you people dissing neil for liking lynnard skynnard, etc:
he’s been in the public eye for something like forty years. neil also wrote “southern man” which takes on racism and hatred head on. like whitman said “i embrace multitudes…” “do i contradict myself?” etc.
another pertinent thought by emmerson: “a foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds.”
neil doesn’t worry about ideological uniformity. he writes what comes to the surface of his consciousness. he’s not consistently at the top of his form but i dare you to name a single song that is more passionate and true than “ohio”. that song was so radioactive AM radio refused to play it! and this was in the days before Clear Channel and it’s inane, lockstep clones started dominating the airwaves.
VG,
Steven Stills = Buffalo Springfield as in Crosby, Stills, Nash and (Neil) Young
Connection complete. There is some story about Stills or Young driving a hearse in LA when they met. Too tired to remember/check it out.
Gotta go til domani.
Neil Young has been noted throughout his career for opportunistic musical shifts in direction like Reactor, Old Ways, Rust Never Sleeps and Greensdale.
Seriously, without seeing the interview, I would guess Sylvia was ill-prepared indeed.
Neil, being the gentleman he is, didn’t gnaw all the flesh from her bones; he’s saving that for his next solo.

Neil Young is very articulate and unflappable. Can we get a frikkin candidate like that? Also, I love it when the main host comes back and the end and not-so-subtly disses the crap out of the bimbo interviewer.
immanentize @ 122:
Bruce Palmer and Young had just driven Young’s hearse into L.A. in ‘66 when they spied Stills going the other way on Sunset.
Young knew Stills from when they had played folk/teen clubs in Ontario on the same bills, and Young was looking to make the hookup again, which happened totally by chance…And thus, the Buffalo Springfield was born.

yes, musical memory be different all right. it’s been used to stimulate the minds of alzheimer victims in a very heartwarming way.
olfactory memory is another. you go some place and smell some odor or fragrance that you haven’t smelled in a long time and it will evoke related memories. some times when this happens to people they have no idea as to why they suddenly are having a particular memory come to mind.

I’m a commander in the right wing coup
I love the claim most recently initiated by Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle and picked up by former vice president Al Gore that right-wingers are controlling the media.
I’ve got a unique perspective on the controversy, because I’ve worked with all the major players in the purported coup.
I came to Washington 15 years ago as editorial page editor of the Washington Times, worked in the first Bush White House, spent five or six years as the principle substitute host for Rush Limbaugh, and now have the privilege of working for Fox News. I can tell you with perfect assurance that Messrs. Gore and Daschle have a bad case of the fevers, and they know it.
Let’s be practical: In our business, we thrive when we tell you things you didn’t know and need to. If we spout party lines or distort the facts, people will catch on and we’ll fail.
The so-called mainstream press has become a trickling tributary because its practitioners have gotten lazy.
But they’ll snap out of it — and when they do — they, and we, will be stronger for it.

The politically astute decisions are no longer being made….It makes me fearful.

Heck talk about backlash the guy wrote “Southern Man” like 20 years ago, and “Ohio”.
Buffalo Springfeild, which consisted of Neil Young and Stephen Stills wrote the song about war resistance in the 70’s. “Battle lines being drawn. Paranoia strikes deep.

Hate to bust on this, but FWIW was written and recorded back in 1967, and it was about the riots caused by the shutdown of Pandora’s Box, a Sunset Strip rock club.
You may be confusing FWIW with CNSY’s “Ohio”, which was indeed written literally immediately after the National Guard’s massacre of protestors at Kent State.
Yes GSD, his own words– here’s the original article– barf.

Cozumel: I was at the Polo Field that November in ‘69, fighting for my (as-yet-still-too young) ass not to get shipped to Vietnam. Do you remember what Young sang that day? I can remember the weather (overcast), but not much else. The newly released ‘Come Together’ blared before people started blabbing, and I seem to recall Tim Leary haranguing the 100,000 strong crowd. But, for the life of me, I don’t recall Young, or what he performed that day.
I know that we are talking about Neil Young but did any of you see this article?
Bush Says He Tried to Avoid War ‘To The Max,’ Explains How God Shapes His Foreign Policy
By E&P Staff
Published: April 24, 2006 4:45 PM ET
NEW YORK President Bush today said he had tried to avoid war with Iraq “diplomatically to the max.”
Speaking to a business group in Irvine, Ca., he admitted mistakes were made in planning for the Iraq invasion, but he defended the troop level, saying “it was the troop level necessary to do the job,” and he would commit the same number if given a second chance.
The remarks came as another former general joined seven others who in recent days have called for the resignation of Pentagon chief Donald Rumsfeld, saying he had mismanaged the planning and execution of the war.
Bush also explained, in unusually stark terms, how his belief in God influences his foreign policy. “I base a lot of my foreign policy decisions on some things that I think are true,” he said. “One, I believe there’s an Almighty. And, secondly, I believe one of the great gifts of the Almighty is the desire in everybody’s soul, regardless of what you look like or where you live, to be free.
“I believe liberty is universal. I believe people want to be free. And I know that democracies do not war with each other.”
A new CNN poll released today shows Bush with his lowest approval rating in any poll so far, at 32%.
Taking questions from members of the Orange County Business Council, Bush said the United States erred in attempting large reconstruction projects soon after the invasion was completed. This “didn’t make any sense,” he said, because they “became convenient targets for the enemy.”
Bush said he’d sat in a California church on Sunday near a mother and stepfather grieving for their son who had been killed in Iraq. “I also want to let you know that before you commit troops that you must do everything that you can to solve the problem diplomatically,” he commented. “And I can look you in the eye and tell you I feel I tried to solve the problem diplomatically to the max and would have committed troops both in Afghanistan and Iraq, knowing what I know today.”
One decision he questions: After the successful invasion, “preparing an Iraqi army for an external threat. Well, it turns out there may have been an external threat but it’s nothing compared to the internal threat.” He did not explain what external threat the Iraqis were being trained for.
In his remarks, the president repeatedly referred to the need to stay in Iraq to deny terrorists a “safe haven.” He asserted, according to the White House transcript that, “Iraq has — had weapons of mass destruction and has the knowledge as to how to produce weapons of mass destruction.” He also said that our enemies “know, and it doesn’t take much to realize, that when you put carnage on our TV screens, it causes us to weep.”
He also said: “It’s not easy work, by the way, to go from tyranny to democracy. We had kind of a round go ourself, if you look back at our history. My Secretary of State’s relatives were enslaved in the United States even though we had a Constitution that said all were — that believed in the dignity, or at least proclaimed to believe in the dignity of all. The Articles of Confederation wasn’t exactly a real smooth start for our government to begin. And what you’re watching on your TV screens is a new democracy emerging.”

Jane, amazing use of video on the site. Just a-mazing. This must have taken huge effort for you to move from implementing Blogger (up to a few weeks ago)l, then moving to WordPress, and now to supporting video on the blog.
I thank you! I hope it’s the first of many multimedia-enriched posts. Wow.
Nothing like watching Young’s calm, reasonable demeanor to underscore that the babe-ette is in over her head by miles. Good thing the anchor guy made clear that SOMEONE on that program knows Young’s iconic status.
Kudos Jane, and thanks again. You’re providing an incredible resource here. And it just gets better and better.
Hope you have a good, long walk with the dogs. You deserve it.

Oh, like deciding to go to war no matter what, before you had the intelligence to support such a decision? Telling the CIA to only give you intelligence that supported war? Ignoring anything to the contrary? Then lying about it to Congress and the people?
To the max, indeed.

I had a really hard time deciding. I decided about an hour before I went to vote. I really think Nagin has gotten a bad rap since Katrina. (many reasons but comments are really slow now.) I ended up with Mitch Landrieu in the primary which was my Anti-Forman (DINO) vote. He doesn’t have any ideas. Virgina Boulet had some good ideas but she was not in contention (1,700 votes). I may vote for Nagin in the run-off if for no other reason than he is not a career politician like Mitch. I like the fact that he is not constantly trying to spin me.
I used know a woman who was cousins with his wife. He got into this mayoral thing because he really loves this city not because of political opportunism. I like that. I respect that. I like to think if politics wasn’t so nasty more novices would step up and serve. He did fight corruption. That helps as well.
That said, I will watch the debates and reserve judgement. This is too important to take lightly. I think either one is probably going to do a decent job. We have term limits (2 -4 year) so this would be Nagin’s last term. He could be a potent force with no re-election campaign to mount.
“She’s fucking Seymour Hersch with Botox, that one.”
Stop sugar-coating it, Jane, and tell us how you really feel about Sy.
I would like to draw a distinction about the interview with Neil Young conducted by Sibila Vargas. It true she comes across as empty-headed, but I don’t think that’s the major point. After all, this was an entertainment segment, and I don’t think the networks assign a lot of PhD candidates to that beat.
What bothers me about the interview is that there is a standard script being used here, one which we’ve all become accustomed to, in which “conservative” talking points are spouted by the interviewers as though they were obvious conventional wisdom.
I’m not interested in the child who read these 100% pure propaganda questions on the air.
Instead, I want to know who wrote them and who decided that they would show up on Vargas’ teleprompter.
MSNBC is advertising Hardball tomorrow–about the CIA chief in Europe (what is his name?) who was on 60 Minutes last night. Should be interesting to see how Tweety tries to spin it.
what this woman (and everyone who parrots the same crap-ass discourse) is missing is that the current anti-bush sentiments have been in the making for a long time. about every album i listen to these days has at least one anti-imperialist (embodied by the bush administration) or anti-INVASION statement song… from james blunt’s “No Bravery” (on the “Back to Bedlam” album) to the Justin Timberlake collaboration piece entitled “Loose Ends” (on the Black Eyed Peas tribute album to Sergio Mendes entitled “Timeless”) to jack johnson’s “cryin shame” on his “In Between Dreams” album.
none of these songs/albums were written and recorded only last month… or in the last 6 months for that matter.
i’m sure there are many MANY more examples.
to say that Neil Young is tailgating bush’s incredibly bad ratings “bump” is just more “up is down” psyops.

What an embarrassing interview. Did she really think Neil Young needs publicity? She should stick to interviewing Brittany Spears. That way both the questions and answers will be monosyllabic.
Aaaah, give Sibila Vargas a break. She was just auditioning for a spot on Faux News.
I don’t understand Jane’s comparison of Vargas to Seymour Hersch………
Nice a couple of people here remembered Scott Young (Neil’s father). He was articulate and knowledgeable and obviously had some sort of major impact on his son. The voices are identical BTW. Interchangeable. ‘There is a town in North Ontario….’
When the Young recording comes out in a couple of weeks, I expect a lot more of this anti-Canadian line to surface. Well we have a lot more where he came from up here in The Big Pink. There’s Bruce Cockburn expressing the heartfelt desire to shoot down American helicopters in El Salvador or Nicaraugua in ‘If I had a rocket launcher’ for starters.
I am hoping for a big big splash for this recording. Not convinced music causes revolutions though it clearly can help grease the skids. I am still waiting for a NASCAR crowd to break out into The Internationale spontaneously. Could be waiting awhile longer. Some of the Cousins are a bit slow, a bit blinded by the light, not quite ready for the Renaisssance just yet.
Yes, Vargas is right.
Neil Young, his entire career marked by a dearth of creativity and social inaction, needs to steal song ideas from the Gallup and Zogby poll results.
And, gosh darn those Canadians, with their opinions, anyway! What next? Brian Adams? Apparently just because Canada sits on our border, supplies us with timber and other resources, and sacrifices soldiers in Afghanistan, this guy and others of his ilk feel they have the right to express an opinion about our country.
If Young doesn’t like our President he oughtta go back where he came from!!!
(And, BTW, his reply is priceless. He’s probably paid more taxes than Bush and Cheney combined. And he and his family have done more good in a day than most of these GOP ninnies do in their entire careers.)
heh. Labia Vargas.
Tony Snow – bet he’s unable to emulate poor ole Scotty’s greatest value, which was to say nothing and say it again and again.
“She’s fucking Seymour Hersch with Botox, that one.”
Seymour Hersh? Wtf? Why do you insult one of the few hard working real journalists there are left? You drunk?
Get your comparisons straight. If you would say that Vargas girl is Barbara Bush on botox, that would be ok.
I don’t think that poor child had any idea who the man she was interviewing is. You get a chance to interview a legend and that’s the best you can do? Sad, really…
Let me add my voice to the chorus of those asking for clarification about the gratuitous swipe at Seymour Hersch. Am I supposed to hate him now, too? It’s so hard to keep up!
I don’t think Jane was criticizing Seymout Hersh in her last comment. It was a sarcastic crack about Vargas’ lack of ability as a journalist, Gray # 197.
Yes, I too would like to see some clarification about the Hersch reference. I very much admire Hersch’s tenacious journalism. And if this is not meant as a cut toward him, then the author ought not to be so careless. Absurd at worst, sloppy at best.
Oh, please. Give the damn interviewer a break, she was just asking questions, she wasn’t questioning Neil’s patriotism. Can we keep the focus on where it belongs, please, and cut the holier than thou attitude?
Whoaah! Wait a minute. Neil Young is Canadian? This is the first time I’ve heard this. And after 40 years of undercover, he’s been *outed* by intrepid “patriot” E-reporter.
I like the way she says “muuusic” with a little bit of a sniff. It’s not the same American Idol “muuusic” that these E-tonight seem to *wooorship*.
I love interviews like this! Some MSM flack puts amurikan questions out there and smart ole’ Neil Young bats ‘em out of the ball park, looks like a genius and a nice guy to boot.
I don’t know the interviewer (live in euro-land and watch CNNI), but she just did a public service. AND look how it ended up – with the studio guy praising the singer. Cool.
Silent sniff. Yes Sibila, we all have to be *concerned* about being considered *unpatriotic* whenever we express any difference of opinion with ChimpCo. It’s incredibly sad when people like Sibila think ChimpCo=America.
Neil Young – A true Canadian/American Patriot!!!!
Stupid c**t Vargas deserved that slapdown at the end.
She was more interested to see if Ashlee Simpson was coming out of that record company building next.
What is it with these people? I just started a blog last week, mostly bitching about gas prices and making fun of the decider(nothing hateful) and i already have hate mail. This dude questioned my faith AND patriotism. He Blamed everything on Clinton, and even brought up Billy friggin Carter!
Oh yah, I also love how she uses the phrase “as Bush’s popularity slides” or something.
His popularity has slid all the way to the bottom of the septic tank. When is 32% still considered good approval?
What is it with these news robots?
She was more interested to see if Ashlee Simpson was coming out of that record company building next.
Wait a minute. Who’s Ashlee Simpson? Is she the blonde or the brunette? I am ashamed to say that I have a hard time differentiating any of this–what seems like– meat and potatos fare for the record companies except buy hair colour. #213, your explantation of the Hersch comment seems correct, your delivery a tad harsh. So thanks for the illumination, no thanks for the snark.
#213: Thanks for pointing out how lame and humorless we all are. What would we do without you? In our defense, though, I would have gotten the sarcasm better if Jane had written “She’s Seymour Hersch on fucking Botox.” That’s how we do it in this post-9/11 world.
Neil handled Sibila Vargas. She even got slapped at the end of the interview by A.J. Hammer.
—
yeah, and her closing reaction to that particular slap around was the crown jewel of the whole thing…she grunts like she’s just had to taste a big ol turd
ha ha ha..i wish i could see one overstuffed/overblown member of the MSM pushed around like that everyday..that was priceless.
Sibila Vargas… Is that what journalists do in America: conduct interviews while not knowing what they’re talking about? It is literally VILE and embarasssing to speak to The GREAT Neil Young that way… UGH, it makes me want to barf. And since when did he support Leaker-in-chief or any other rightwing nutFREAK? Honestly, since freakin when? I don’t understand why, when being interviewed by a knuckle head, the questionee (in this case Neil Y.) doesn’t throw the absurd commentary back in the news-bunny’s face. He should ask if her questions are tailor made to bring her publicity… Judging from my enraged reaction… I guess it’s working….LOVE N.Young, LOATH empty-make-up-face Sibila Vargas BARF.

“Hate to bust on this, but FWIW was written and recorded back in 1967, and it was about the riots caused by the shutdown of Pandora’s Box, a Sunset Strip rock club.
You may be confusing FWIW with CNSY’s “Ohioâ€, which was indeed written literally immediately after the National Guard’s massacre of protestors at Kent State.”

You’re right about when “For What it’s Worth” was written, and why it was written. I see that now. But, no, I’m not mistaking it for “Ohio”. I know why and when Ohio was written.
The reason I remember FWIW in the way that I do is because it was radio played frequently during the 70’s draft for Vietnam era. I guess it was a rebirth for the song at that time rather than a birth.
Thanks for the historical correction. I didn’t know that.
Actually, I loved this interview because it makes the anti Bush people seem sane and is another dent for the “oh the evil liberal media” perception.
THe funniest thing about that clip is that the interviewer lacked not ony substance but style. How does an ugly woman who can’t even speak fluently on camera get a job in the tv industry?(and it not the accent, it’s her lack of polished speaking style, it’s like some 3rd grader was pretending to intereview someone).
Loved the way the studio host made the vargas bitch uncomfortable with his indirect comment on her stupid patriotism question.
Lets find out if Neil is a shill for the latest trend for money. Take it away Neil:
