These are the people the Wall Street Journal editorial page thinks are crass and crazy. Funny how citizens getting together to take back their government make establishment elites stain their boxers.
Regular people can’t afford lobbyists, posh meals or fat expense accounts. And yet, they hold the power to strike fear in the hearts of the comfortable when they summon the will to work together for action. Thats what the Roots Project is all about.
Washington State Roots Project members met this week with staffers of both Senators Murray and Cantwell. Here are excerpts from their notes following the Murray meeting:
On April 19, 2006, annie and I, moe99, met with Ardis J.Dummit, the Director of Special Projects for Senator Patty Murray. As annie explained to Ardis, we were part of the 50 state initiative put together by the blog Firedoglake, and while we could not speak for all the members. . . we did want to bring one issue that was of particular importance to us to the Senator’s attention, and asked that she give us a written response that we could share with the members of Firedoglake. . .
[snip]
We told Ardis that we could have brought a huge laundry list of things that we thought should be fixed, but instead we had one major issue that we wanted to focus on. And that was the very real threat that the current president would use nuclear weapons in a pre-emptive strike against Iran. When Ardis started to demur and say, "Well I don’t think he would really do that," we told her that maybe 3 years ago we might have believed that he was more reasonable but that the events of the last 3 years have convinced us that he is beyond reasoning, especially as he looks to shore up his popularity with his supporters.
I said that I know that the Democrats are worried that they would look like they were soft on terrorism if they oppose Bush on this, but I said that was why we crafted it so narrowly: the pre-emptive use of nuclear weapons. We want the Senate to either pass an amendment to the War Powers Act that specifies that the president may not use nuclear weapons in a pre-emptive strike without the consultation and approval of the Senate. Or, in the alternative, that a resolution expressing the sense of the Senate that under the War Powers Act, the president is precluded from using nuclear weapons pre-emptively.
Ardis said that Sen. Murray was not on any committee that dealt with foreign affairs. We said, that’s fine, she should go to Harry Reid and put together a strategy for the Democrats to raise this as a group, and get the Senators to vote on it, yea or nay, so the voters can see who in the Senate is committed to our constitutional framework, where wars are declared by the Senate (not the president) and who is in favor of the president holding absolute power.
This kind of measure, we said, even if the Democrats lose, gives them something to stand for, a line to draw. This would give the Democrats a very visible campaign issue, one that really is not about politics (which Ardis says is the worst she’s ever seen in her experience in the US Senate), but is a crucial, fundamental issue of whether our constitutionally designed system of checks and balances among the three branches of government is healthy and functioning.
Passionate, prepared and crying out for leadership and accountability in our government. No wonder Paul Gigot’s buddies are choking on their cigars.
A few Roots Project members from Massachussetts attended Senator Kerry’s speech today at Faneuil Hall. They attended prepared to ask questions, expecting a town hall format, but it was a speech. Here’s what RevDeb reports from the event:
Five of us went to hear Kerry speak today in Boston. I’ve been told he speech will be on C-Span tomorrow. The group will be writing up the experience and submitting it to you and the (Roots Project) lists.
An interesting development. It was not, as originally billed, a town-hall meeting. It was a speech. BUT afterward, we looked around to try to grab a staffer and found the State Director, Jon Jennings, and had a lengthy chat. He’s open to meeting with us regularly, as in monthly! We plan to take him up on it.We are feeling REALLY good about that.
Energized, united, organized constituents, unsubsidized by any lobby, are the most powerful force in politics, bar none. They just have to show up. Through the Roots Project, same-state neighbors are getting together all over the country to make their voices heard, pushing their leaders to lead, crying out for accountability in a government hostile to the interests of all but a select few.
Note to the American political establishment (including the traditional media and the punditocracy): this is just the beginning. We’re not going away. All over America, through this site and many others, we’re moving from netroots to grassroots. We are strong and will be silent no more. Adapt or be (peacefully) overrun.
There are currently thirty-one state groups in the Roots Project, with room for plenty more. If you’d like to become part of the Roots Project, send an email with only the name of your home state in the subject line to stateproject at gmail dot com. If you can, please include your blog commenting name or kos user name in the body of your email. We’re just getting our operational infrastructure together (all volunteer!), so please be patient if it takes a little time to invite you into your state’s group. For more information about the Roots Project, check out the notes from a recent Roots Project Orientation conference call here.
One last thing: congratulations to you Washington State Roots Project members for stepping up. . . you’re the best! Massachussets, you folks have blazed the trail, and now your persistence is bearing new fruit. Meeting by meeting, you are already getting noticed and changing America. Let’s see all you other states top these intrepid citizens!

Fitz, Feingold, and FDL.
Fitz ‘em if ya got ‘em!
MFI, up at no o’clock in the morning!
Thanks for the publicity, Pach. What a surprise to find us on FDL in a very real sense!
The day after we met w/ Ardis, Harry Reid (can he read our minds or what?) gave a speech in Nevada on this very issue, so we were able to take it to Jay Pearson, Sen. Cantwell’s aide, and say, “Look, the head of the Senate Democrats agrees with us.” Shoephone joined us for that meeting and she did a very direct, powerful summation of the four points that Sen. Reid had made in his speech.
We have sent a long email to Sen Cantwell asking for a written response as well and hope to share both Sen. Murray’s and Sen. Cantwell’s responses with everyone here.
Thanks again.

Bravo Moe99 and Annie! and the great MA contingent! Here in IL Leslie & I went to Obama’s Town Hall and then Jon, Mack, Angie and I went to Obama and Durbin’s offices to start the conversation and had a good initial meeting with the Director of Durbin’s Chicago office. She mentioned that they get tons of email and calls from the other side and *really* need to hear from us!
Awesome work you guys did.
New York has some stunning stuff coming down the pike, too.
Trust me, it will grab your interest.
Stay tuned.
RP-IL has been a super active group. I can already see that these groups are going to be so active I won’t be able to blog it all. Siun and others in IL have done terrific work.
From Billmon…OMG!

Genius, I tell you!
OT–Deborah Howell’s column in Sunday’s WaPo is her tribute to the paper and its staff for receiving four Pulitzers. It’s her usual trite, forgettable writing, but the ending caught my eye. Good to know she can’t get us off her mind even when she’s writing about such a “happy” day….
http://www.washingtonpost.com/…..01543.html
“Monday ended with a party on the roof of the Hay-Adams Hotel, overlooking the White House and downtown Washington. For a day, there were no falling circulation numbers or angry bloggers or disappointed readers. Only celebration. Then back to work.”

Good on you girls.
I wonder where the WSJ was when Tucker Carlson quoted Bush dropping the F-Bomb early and often in his September 1999 piece on Bush in the maiden issue of Talk magazine?
Whoa..!
AP – Swedish authorities Saturday are investigating how a man calling himself a “stateless American” ended up floating on a raft of oil barrels and wood planks in the waters between Denmark and Norway.
The man — who carried no identification, spoke perfect English and said his name was George W. — was found by a Norwegian oil tanker Friday morning, floating in the Skagerak sea on a raft of four oil barrels held together by a frame of wooden planks.
He told police he had been thrown from a ship several days earlier and now wanted to go to New York, but offered little further information.
UPDATE: “My name is President George W. Bush. Dick Cheney has kept me captive on an Exxon oil tanker since January 20th, 2001. I want to go home and get the S.O.B. who has been sleeping in my bed, ruining my good name, reputation and America!”

Anybody from Kansas here tonight? I’ve sent out a couple of e-mails recently but had no response. I’d like to find a few people who are interested in doing something about what’s the matter with Kansas. Specifically, a Congressional office visit or two. If you are on the Kansas netroots list, send an e-mail. If you are not, and would like to be, follow Pach’s instructions above. Even if our senators and representatives aren’t going to vote the way we would like, I think it would be good to let them know we’re out here watching them.
moe99 et al — Please do keep us apprised of Cantwell’s responses (if any). From recent indications, I fear she’s in danger of slipping into DINOhood.
Encouraging to hear your report from your foray into Murray’s camp.
EPU’d from last post:
Why is everybody saying 33 more months (or 1000 days) of Bush? Has everyone given up on impeachment, conviction and removal from office?
We win back the Senate and House, and/or the Repugs remaining therein get some semblance of integrity (whether out of electoral fear, poll-reading, sudden bouts of recovered humanity): Demos get some backbone (courtesy of you and me and, oh, about 200 million or so others); Cheney’s gone, and somehow we get lucky on the VP replacement — and there you go.
It could happen, couldn’t it now? Why not dare to hold the vision?
My personal thanks to Annie, Moe99, and Shoephone for their persistence and perseverance. I’m proud to share citizenship of the other WA with them.
That is just amazing. I am so proud of everyone who is doing this. It’s an incredibly powerful thing, showing up in your Senator’s office and giving voice to what all of us are feeling.
And what a photo *g*
Gorgeous.

I guess “ombudsman” is French for “head cheerleader” (if not something less nice).
Lil Debbie’s column said, “Editor emeritus Ben Bradlee was front and center.” I don’t suppose Ben used the occasion to give them a piece of his mind about the depths to which they have sunk over the past 30 years…
Friends of Dick Cheney:

Pach, I guess you were finally able to pair me up with some late sooners, but unfortunately, I have no idea who they are. I went to the google group created for stateproject Oklahoma where you stated Say Hello! I did and nobody answered. So How do I get in touch with these guys?
Oh and do let us know what happens with Cantwell. She is a burgeoning DINO.
Probably don’t need to mention the General’s homesteading.
wow, thanks to everyone. i was very inspired by the work of the MA team. one of the most amazing things was the accessability of both the senators staff. Ardis was brilliant, engaging, encourging, and stoic. perhaps i am overly optomistic, but i truly believe if there is any hope for our country it lies in the citizens.
Jay pearson i also want to acknowledge. I have met with hom before, a very thoughful, intellegent, engaging man also. it will take persistence but if we stick together i have faith our representatives can pull ths off.
on a personal note, i think a unified message is the most powerful.
We want the Senate to either pass an amendment to the War Powers Act that specifies that the president may not use nuclear weapons in a pre-emptive strike with out the consultation and approval of the Senate. Or, in the alternative that a resolution expressing the sense of the Senate that under the War Powers Act, the president is precluded from using nuclear weapons pre-emptively.
“…and had a good initial meeting with the Director of Durbin’s Chicago office. She mentioned that they get tons of email and calls from the other side and *really* need to hear from us!” – siun
I saw this comment when you originally posted it, siun (GREAT job, you guys), and it made me wonder…
WHO IS “the other side” Dick Durbin’s office is allegedly hearing from so strongly, according to his staff? I think someone needs to look beneath the surface here — sounds like a reverse twin of the manipulated, manufactured robocall phenomenon to me — this time from make-believe constituents… [Recall Senator Byrd and his “hand-written” letters complaining about the PROCESS of the Alito hearings, more so than about the merits of the candidate…] Durbin’s office should call up a few of these ‘anti-censure’ constituents and feel them out a little, seems to me. I’m suspicious. [Even if someone was against Censure, it appears to have NO chance of succeeding, so who would be motivated to bother to contact their Senator to oppose something that is apparently very unlikely to succeed??]
For what it’s worth, it looks like people are starting to put up photos from yesterday’s Stanford Palo Alto protests
http://flickr.com/photos/72209…..114002723/
And others if you google. Country’s brightest getting manhandled by riot police.. I’m not old enough to have experienced the protests against Nixon, but perhaps this is the start of something…
Oilfieldguy — what part of Oklahoma are you in? My family is in Tulsa.
From an email from democrats.com – let’s all make sure we do this too:
FPJ’s “Peace in Iraq Call-In Day” Is Monday, April 24
On Tuesday, April 25, the Senate will take up the supplemental spending bill for 2006. The current proposal includes $67 billion more for the wars in Iraq and Afganistan. How many innocent Iraqis must die, how many young Americans? How much more destruction, pain and hatred before the Congress finds the will to end this war?
Tell your Senators: Not one penny more for the War!
There is growing support in the Senate for an amendment to the supplemental that will prohibit permanent U.S. bases in Iraq.
Tell your Senators: No permanent U.S. bases in Iraq!
Our “not one penny more for war” call-in day to the House of Representatives last month was a great success. The number of Representatives voting against the war funding rose to 71, AND the House approved an amendment against permanent U.S. military bases in Iraq. We want to repeat that success in the Senate. If we are unable to stop the funding request from passing, we can at least mak! e sure that an amendment against permanent bases is attached.
Call 1-800-620-4394
The toll-free number we are using is graciously provided by the Friends Committee on National Legislation – a member group of UFPJ.
They also mention an upcoming weekend of grassroots training in DC with lobbying – check http://unitedforpeace.org/modinput4.php?modin=121 for details.
And one more, Civic Worldwide is marking the one year anniversary of Marla Ruzicka’s death in Iraq with activities and vigils – we had a small one here in Chicago today. One lovely activity is the collection of “I Care” photos – you can upload one here: http://icare.civicworldwide.org/home
We took a photo at the vigil which I think will be uploaded soon and we spoke about how Marla has inspired and challenged us. One participant was a friend of Marla’s from college who shared great, life-filled tales of this remarkable young woman – it was wonderful to hear how fully she lived.
Oilfeild: There are not many of them yet. Hopefully they will answer you soon. I expect we’ll get another bunch of recuits this week, so perhaps others will join from OK as well.
Hang in there! We’re still in startup mode.
Jane # 25
I live in Oklahoma City
re cantwell, i’m a seatleite and well aware of her voting record. she has an election coming up, we are hoping she sees the wisdom of throwing a bone for the team. in this instance, a very big bone for democracy.
Props to all! This is quite inspiring. Coming from a really really red state, I haven’t joined up bec. it just seemed hopeless. But… rethinking that.
TRex- are you in for a photo op?
I used to be fairly active in politics (see latest blog entry). But alas, life intruded. I’m returning with a vengence.
I have to tell everyone how awesome it is watching these state groups begin to take off. I’m watching all of it and it’s amazing, inspiring.
Pach- 31 state groups- do you have a breakdown as to R or D senators in those states? My guess is that most groups are from blue states.
I’m up against Inhofe and Coburn so a couple of people would help. Maybe I can cast around on some local blogs or something. If nothing else I’m not opposed to a Quixotic charge. Is there a Dulcinea out there anywhere?
pow wow – the “we get lots of email, etc” comment was not specific to censure but related to the response to Durbin’s vote against the war and to more general issues since. I took it as a clear message to us to make sure we make noise about our issue so senator’s feel they have support for doing the things we want – sad but true, they are unlikely to take hard positions without a sense that they have constituent backing
I really like the WA unified message – strong and needed now!
I’m glad mfi *poofed* I can hear him now,
“I’ll be your Huckleberry!”
Oilfieldguy
I grew up in OKC but have been gone for quite a few years. I have a stepson living down that way but unfortunately he has acquired a bit of a taste for Kool-aid…
VG: I don’t have the breakdown, but I do take exception to the idea that states with Republican reps are hopeless.
Why?
Bush’s approval numbers are down virtually everywhere. All the Republicans know it. The ground is softened up.
Moreover, allow me the conceit of quoting myself from the Q&A in this set of notes:
http://www.dailykos.com/story/2006/4/21/125817/793
* What if my reps are wingnut goopers? Do I miss out on all the fun? Answer: No. Refer to the Rubber Stamp video FDL put together, with cooperation from Matt Stoller (MyDD) and PoliticsTV, posted at C&L. Theater can be very powerful. Remember also Jane’s gooper brain explosion question: at the burning fertility clinic, would you save the child or the five blastocysts in the petri dish? Put these people on the spot. Be creative. Get video. If you can’t influence them, shame them. Also, write LTE’s. Get involved in local, non federal campaigns. Brainstorm together. We’re trying to promote a national movement, and what’s good for NY is not good for South Carolina.
Oilfieldguy- did some googling on “oklahoma blogs” – might not be your Dulcinea, as it looks like she is taking time off from blogging: http://tomcoburnisabigfatjerk.blogspot.com/
But, looking into OK blogs might give you some other leads.
interestingly it was an interview w/durbin i saw in crooks and liars that was the inspiration for honing in on the senate oversite off the premptive issue. he was ask “can bush attack w/out senate approval?” he answered NO. he was then asked “do the other sanators share this view?” again, he answered “NO”. it was a gotcha moment. the prospect of having the senate after the fact argue whether bush has authority or not is a total loss. on the other hand, it’s an issue every single dem senator, and rep alike should be able to agree on. what senator would agree to give up their power to the executive branch?
I’m off to bed, folks, but if you send email to the Roots Project, we’ll get to it. We’ve had some signups tonight already.
i urge anyone from durbins state to ask him to co sponsor this resolution. contact me @ the wa st group and we can cover all the aspects of this .
g’night pach, and thank you for everything
completely OT – has anyone read this wapoo article on Rummie’s new deal on the terror war?
deploying special forces all over – all sounds very strange and a little bit stomach turning.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/…..01124.html
Pach-
VG: I don’t have the breakdown, but I do take exception to the idea that states with Republican reps are hopeless.
Couldn’t you have said that in a nicer way? It was not an attack on you or the roots project. I was simply stating my view, and saying that I was reconsidering, in light of the inspiration from the reports.
Props to Pach for doing an amazing job with the Roots project.
p.s. Pach read my posts #30 and #33 together.
Thank you for helping us take our democracy back, Pach. I hope we have an exciting report from California in a week. I’m inspired by the Washington and Massachusetts stories.
annie – I’ll circulate your unified message on the IL group and see if we can get agreement to use it with Durbin and Obama (tho Obama is less likely to be helpful I think)
we can discuss further in email – ok?
neurophius #37
You wouldn’t recognize the place since we passed the MAPS project in ‘93. I’ve got a link to the project and its accomplishments on my latest post. We’re gettin’ way yonder shiny over here in capital city. Even housed the Hornets B-ball team in our shiny new arena, since New orleans got all Bushwacked and shit. That’s a pro team, playing a full season, in Oklahoma City. A first for us. We got some attention out of the deal too.
annie 40, that was biden, not durbin
any people in the cultural deserts of Southern IL on here?
Yeah Pach,
I didn’t mean to sound all whiny and stuff. You guys all do outstanding work. Is this blog like a hobby for Pach and Jane and Christy? Do you guys have other jobs or are you all independently wealthy? In other words, should I be more active on top of my 80 hour workweek? Comparably speaking am I a wuss?
RBG’s #1 Post:
” FITZ, FEINGOLD & FDL “
looks like a perfect bumper sticker to me.
Oy. Chimpy’s now telling us that it’s going to be a tough summer for gas prices. You know you’re in trouble when Bush starts telling people things they don’t want to hear.
Progressive OK blogs: Okiefunk.com, Okiedoke.com and jmbzine.com. There is also blogoklahoma.com which includes a number of lefty blogs. One is called leftside of the dial or something, but can’t remember the url.
After a candidate gets elected as President, it takes a while before he looks Presidential. Dubya, IMHO, has never made this transition.
Bush looks like Jack Lemmon in Glengarry Glen Ross at the end of the movie

Yeah, I think over at the DSCC website they have a listing of local blogs for every state. I guess my biggest problem is that if I do take the lead, I might end up leaving people in the lurch. I am always one phonecall away from being in the middle of BFE ASAP. So whipping up support to bail at showtime would be shitty.
Oilfieldguy and XOKCgirl–
I just noticed looking at the dates on the comments that today (FDL time)(yesterday Central Daylight Time) was April 22, which we used to call ‘89er day, do they still? The day of the first land run, in 1889, for anyone interested. I was there for the Centennial in 1989, but hadn’t given it much thought since then. It was a pretty big deal when I was in grade school.
BTW XOKgurl thanks for the 411. Where do you X from?
Pachacutec said:
Lots of our problems may come from the fact that those people don’t wear boxers, and have lived their entire lives with a) recurring brief-induced auto-wedgies and b) their genitalia crammed up against their lowest roll of fat.
Yes, the land run is still celebrated throughout the state. We can name the year, month, day and time that our run to statehood began. Rather unique heritage. Some people got cheesed off that a lot of good claims were already staked out by people who cheated and got a head start and got there “Sooner”.
Oilfieldguy,
Love your posts, but I gotta ask…what’s BFE?
#62
I resemble that remark.
#64
Bum Fucked Egypt. Which, if your still not clear, means the middle of nowhere.
Ah…now it makes sense. Thanks
I just realized I me two references to Don Quixote tonight. I need to get a vanity plate for my pickup truck. Can anyone remember the name of his horse? (or former horse ;D)
“Rocinante,” means the first and foremost of all the hacks in the world.
Did all the suits that run this store go to bed? I was serious about my wuss question. Even if the answer is “none of your business” it would at least be an answer.
Crap JC that’s too many letters. Oh well, thanx anyway.
A pick up names Rocinante. Now that would be unique.
But that title is taken by Judith Miller.
You could use “Roc” as your vanity plate for your pick-em-up truck (sorry, that’s what I’ve always called ‘em)
Oilfieldguy, Pach went to bed some time ago, see #41, before your question, I think. I doubt that anyone around here would call you a wuss.
Well, I’m signing off now salutory truck driver style:
“Keep the big one between the ditches and the little one in your britches so won’t nobody laugh at ya.”
John C, do you ever sleep?
Seriously, you have probably tracked the WaPo shenanigans as well as any commenter here. Earlier today you seemed to suggest you don’t think our efforts have had much effect. Was I misreading your comment?
Totally, way, extremely OT (but humor me, it’s late nite)
- Valley Girl.
1. If you do some sort of computer whiz pop up thing for EPU, definitionally please include “left behind posting insightful comments. And please reference the omniscient Evil Parallel Universe; Alternatively, I’m ok with something like “….Evil Parallel Universe, who claims omniscience,” if you feel like hedging. But, in my favor is the fact that I have the uncanny ability to make new articles appear. Damn, that’s omnipotence. OK. In my favor is the fact that I know when new articles are going to appear.
2. Hotel California. I figure someone already posted this, but, so what, I don’t feel tardy. Supposedly it is about the Manson family murder of Sharon Tate. A friend of mine in college, whose uncle or something was part of Tate’s crowd told me that, and I heard it elsewhere.
More ontopic, but not this thread.
I wouldn’t bet against Faux turning more truthy (not “Liberal”) as ChimpCo’s numbers stay at record lows. At teh end of the day it is a business. If anyone knows where to find them, I would be interested in knowing how Faux’s ratings have been doing/trending, as well as CNN and MSNBC. I can’t believe that Faux has changed yet, but dollars talk and stranger things have happened, and if the natives in frieperland are turning on them….. Hey, what will they watch?
thanks marky, those names confuse me.
re the red states. the proposal to reaffirm the war powers act totally coincides and even enhances the position for senators who want to be percieved as being strong on nat security. there is no contradiction. that’s the beauty of it. given the iraq fiasco and the fallout from false cherry picked justification for the previous invasion it stands to reason any proposal to attack iran would come under intense scrutiny. but only if the senate pre empts the execs by re affirming the already existing act and adding a resolution to exclude pre empting nukes.. the act if nothing else it gives us time,
dems seriously need something powerful to unite behind going into the election. sorry for sounding like a broken record. i’m off for the night, i would comment here more often but it takes me so long to type and post i always feel OT by the time it shows up.
These stories definitely are inspiring. I am looking forward to marching to McCain’s office, looking to give a little “straight talk.”
Speaking of getting their panty-hose in a wad….. I am one of those sad people who have ONLY ReThug Reps….. Kyl, McCain and the blowheart JD Hayworth…. Can’t get into their events because they are all special hand picked audiences….. and since I am Democratic Precinct Committeeperson and Vice-Chair of our DFA chapter, I just do not get on the ticket give out list.
Old JD did not come off too good yesterday in his townhall with about 25 hand picked seniors to discuss Medicare D. I guess they were NONE too happy and gave him a piece of their minds… The story is that he fled the event with his tail between his legs……It was on the 10pm news
All of them have learned from the Preznit with hand picked audiences and pre-reviewed questions…. Several groups have tried to meet with any of them and they just do not meet with “drop in” to their local offices.
Thank you Pach and others for doing this. Someday I too will have represenation and I am too stuborn to get it by moving out of state!
OFG – You’re not a wuss, at least not b/c you don’t spend as much time as others here. :)
OfT: I can’t get this link to work, but Drudge is hosting some ABC News pics of DeadEye and Connie nodding off while Hu was speaking. Connie may be “listening with her eyes closed, but DeadEye is definitely “night night.”

Matt O. and Katymine, if you’re here, and I’m here that means that 3 out of the 4 liberals in AZ are here (I couldn’t leave out MrsK8).
Cheney probably sleeps many hours per day—far more than 8.
I couldn’t get the link in 83 to work in “preview,” but it works fine now and takes you directly to a great pic of DeadEye sleeping.
3 out of 5 – I have to assume that Phoenix Woman is from AZ, although it could be some kind of rising from the ashes thing.
The Beatles sang “I am the Walrus”
Now there’s this:

Have there been any live sightings of Deadeye since that picture was taken? Do we know whether he was alive?
perhaps, you women can explain it to me?
the wsj has this woman on its payroll by the name of mary anastasia o’grady.
she is every bit the intellectual equal of malkin, coulter, matalin, et alia.
but why is it that i never read anyone eviscerating her for her absolute nonsense?
you will go after john fund[rightly], paul gigot[rightly], but his fascist bit of womanhood gets a bye.
how come?
all ears.
88 – I saw that on C & L, it is very funny.
g’nite gang!
and annie – I’ve sent around a question about the message, will let you know the response
RBG,
“Earlier today you seemed to suggest you don’t think our efforts have had much effect. Was I misreading your comment?”
No, I’m quite sure you weren’t misreading it. I probably just didn’t say it very well. I think that is a lot more likely.
No, on the contrary, I think Jane in particular, and other blogs, have been fabulously successful, along with Fitz, the Iraqi’s, the Iranians, the high price of gasoline, and a lot of other issues in humiliating the WaPoo and the NYT’s into reporting the news. It’s been a “team” effort.
IMO the WaPoo and the NYT’s set the margin for the “left.” Again imo, every other media outlet in the nation just takes a position to the right of wherever they set up (which is why Hiatt’s editorial was so
fuckingdarn unhelpful). Harris, Woodward, Brady, and the New York Times know if they are as obvious about it as they have been in the past, Jane , Christy, and lot of others will humiliate them as they have done before.EPU I think PhoenixWoman is in California. At least I think she has blogged on a local California Blog.
Do you attend any of the meetings here? DFA, PDA, Drinking Liberally?
I want JD out of Congress! attended one townhall of his back in the Social Security bamboosle tour and needed to shower and be deloused afterwords. Not sure that Harry Mitchell has enough ….. spine to shine … Yet…
No, I don’t. I may get a bunch of shit for this, but I did 3 years of active duty working in DC for Dem congressmen when I was younger, now I give money, and of course my omniscience to you all through FDL.
My pseudonym should have been BlueBrownManinRedState.
At least you don’t live in TX excluding Austin. Really scarily RED.
katymine,
I have been wanting to go to Drinking Liberally but I usually have to work 5-10 on Thursday nights.
JC, that helps clarify.
Goodnite all.
OT: Where is Christy/Redd Hedd these days? Haven’t seen her around these parts lately.
I don’t think I’ve posted here before, this project looks like it’s worth signing up. I just sent an email to get on board in Virginia.
On vacation.
I’m half tempted to whore out a couple of things I wrote on things mentioned in this late night FDL but I’ll refrain to throw more emphasis on something that I know will be more dear to everyone here’s hearts. I just got home from a party where I talked to a relative of mine who is on the Fitz prosecution team. Despite our different political affiliations we were able to agree on a lot of stuff, mainly that corruption needs to be eliminated for any real political debate to take place. Before I get sidetracked here let me say that Fitz’s team is an incredible bunch of talented people. They are mostly Republicans but include many liberals. The thing that makes them great is that they are all able to work together despite their differences. What I gathered from our talk is that the real people on both sides of the aisle are sick of the corruption and want it gone. Something to think about when wooing voters in November. We can’t run on the platform that Dems are immune but rather that we are interested in reform. Real reform, not faux McCain style reform. That’s why Fitz’s team is so dynamic, they are able to work past their political affiliations to get real work done.
We can sit here and pretend that Fitz is here solely to bring down corrupt Republicans but really he is an honest man looking to clean up politics. Fitzgerald is Republican. He is not interested in handing us elections. What he really is doing is strengthening his party. More importantly he is strengthening American Politics that are in desperate need of a major overhaul.
That being said I would remind Illinois Dems not to support Blago. He is going down. Fitz is building a strong case against him and if we want to have a clean house we cannot be expected to carry dead weight like him.
Issues we expected to win on that should be no brainers like torture maybe should be secondary or tertiary issues for the upcoming election. What will not only excite our base but draw from the middle that Dems have been desperately going after, is the issue of real reform. We need honest people with honest values representing us. That is how to change things. From there we can work on issues. We need to seperate the Republicans from the neocons and bring them to our side if only temporarily. After all we are all trying to make this country work better. As it stands we can run a small coup come November but there is an opportunity available for a major revolution.
Sorry….kind of longer than the few sentences I wanted to write and got off the subject of Fitz for a minute. What is important to know is that that even if 30% of the country is unreachable there is a good percentage of Republicans and Independants that are with us if we can offer something clean and corruption free.
Whore away; Don’t tease.
DFA-MC (formerly AZVOTES) meets first Wednesday of the month… We were meeting at County Party headquarters but got kicked out due to campaign season. We are looking for a location, as soon as I know I will let you know.
PDA is meeting Wednesday April 26th, 2006 6:00PM at Nixon’s Resturant, At the Esplanade on Camelback.
So far I have not made it the Drinking Liberally even when Markos was here… I was stuck on a flight back from California with a late plane and missed the whole event. I met Markos & Jerome last summer at DemocracyFest in Austin TX.
If you can make either event…. just ask who Katymine is and someone will tell you!
Other Fitz topics to consider: he has questioned the president twice about the Plame case. the president asked Fitz personally to investigate this case. the president can revoke Fitz’s authority to persue that case but hasn’t yet – is he afraid of political fallout or did he think he was getting off scott free?
I haven’t seen it mentioned much but Fitz is reminding me more and more everyday of Elliott Ness.
That is of course assuming the whoring is prosecution of all things Chimpco related.
katymine,
Camelback Road huh? Sounds like you’re in Phoenix. I am in Southern Arizona in Tucson. All that I know of out here is Drinking Liberally at The Shanty on Thursday nights.
at Nixon’s Resturant
And people say that irony is dead.
104 – well, don’t get too excited…it’s more of a amateur hand job but there are so many inconsistencies in the Henninger piece and so many people tearing it apart it makes me feel like maddox from xmission making fun of little kid’s art.
But discussing this is just a red herring when there is so many more important issues that need attention rather thatn the lack of respect the online community gets from the established print media.
Yep, I am up in the big nasty valley where there is NO viable mass transportation, NO light rail and it is build a new freeway every year. Thank God I work from home…..
DFA Tucson will meet Wednesday, May 3 at 8:00 PM
Ward 6 City Council Office at 3202 E First St.
Arizona PDA
And Matt O, you live in a Blue Town…. kind of like Austin, a small blue island in a big red sea….. I am just trying to tread water here in that red sea…
katymine,
Thanks for the info!
Indeed I do live in a blue town but I spend most of my time on the UA campus and the College Republicans make a ton of racket. They get a bunch of publicity, including when they had a bake sale to demonstrate how affirmative action works, selling cookies cheaper to white students, and more expensively to students of color… The Democratic group is pretty quiet, or at least I never hear anything coming from them really.
Good luck up there!
Re: Red States
I’ve never lived in Arizona and am unfamiliar with the local politics but my general understanding that it is very anti-democrat. Some places that can mean they really are conservative and some places that can mean just combative politics.
I did live in San Antonio for a year and I know that despite Texas’ reputation it is not as red as people think. It’s true that it has it’s conservative nutjobs (remeber Waco?) but remember that until Rove and DeLay came around a lot of it’s leaders were Democrats. They want to portray their narrow margin of victory as a sweeping mandate of the people when it is anything but. Not all red states are completely lost causes or completely conservative. I’m not sure about the other states but there is an opportunity to make significant headway in Texas. It won’t change overnight but if Texas Republican Politics are tied to DeLay and Rove and Bush, there is a chance for change.
Yes Buckley Roberts. Good to hear that and well said! #103
This is probably the biggest crisis facing our country, at least in my life so far.
It is not just about Dems vs. GOPs now, it is about people becoming citizens: getting informed about- what makes a living democracy, – the rest of the world thank-you-very-much, and taking responsibility to get our country back on track.
I would like to believe a massive block of Republicans can now see the peril of following the little chimpster of Oz.
(OffTopic) In Australia citizens are required to vote by law. Is this something Americans need to make them get off their butts?
This from the first paragraph of the nice ladies’ notes:
“Â As annie explained to Ardis, we were part of the 50 state initiative put together by the blog Firedoglake, and while we could not speak for all the members. . . “
Is that accurate? I’m unaware of any chapter of netroots or committee representing fdl here in Alaska. If there is one, how do I get in touch with them?
Just home from another concert.
ET – I believe you only need to email Pach at
Pachacutec01 at gmail dot com, write Alaska in the subject line (nothing else) and he will set you up with others in your state.
IIRC, there are 31 states included so far. (About 250 people).
thanks, shoephone, I’ll do that right now.
not be be missed: Don Knotts as Dubya, the movie:
http://www.dubyamovie.com/
WaPo coverage Sunday of McCarthy firing and WaPo’s current status in the developing story which, from the article, doesn’t show itself headed toward a trial of Ms. McCarthy.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/…..42_pf.html
pach, I’ll say this till I’m blue in the face
none of this means anything at all unless we can do something to prevent cluster from stealing yet another election
this is going to happen, it doesn’t matter how much Americans choose to bring over site back into government, their vote will not count unless we do something that insures the integrity of process
that needs to begin right now, we need a movement, we need to get the areas that won’t have enough polls to get them, we need to organize groups with video cameras filming events that the republicans will orchestrate
we need to guarantee no electronic voting, we need legitimate exit polling
we need to gear p for the fight because it will be a fight we cannot afford to loose, the last round in a bout we are over matched, with every single judge on the take
we are going to need a hero and a firestorm to make certain votes really mean something this election
our country and her constitution are taking their last breaths, they stumble and if we fail this election this great nation is lost
ben framklin had wondered how long we would be able to keep thus country in their vision…we need to begin the organization against election corruption now
right wing spin machine will make it hard and call the movement all kinds of names, we need a good battle plan to counter the attack which WILL work on the mindless sheep that follow corporate media
we need a hero
moe99, annie, shoephone on one coast and the mass folks on the other, you are doing the essential work of citizenry. the roots project draws heavily and correctly on the woody allen school of politics — 90 percent of success is JUST SHOWING UP.
pachacutec is right: accept no substitutes.
me to me 121
Thank you and yes yes yes.
They have stolen voting itself and until we the people FUCKING RIOT over this, nothing will change.
I know what Susan B. Anthony and MLK would be doing right now.
People, this is the ONLY issue. Dipshit became president ONLY BECAUSE OF THIS. The senate is repuke ONLY BECAUSE OF THIS.
Voting integrity is THE ONLY ISSUE.
me to me #121,
In Mark Crispin Miller’s recent speech, he said a really famous person would be speaking out soon about the voting machines, but I haven’t heard squat yet. If a tree falls in the forest and no one’s around to hear it, did it make a noise? Same question but plug in “media coverage” and “anything important.”
The shuffling deck chairs on the Titanic meme bites…Tide turns on Dubya’s wreck
By Mike Carlton
April 22, 2006
SYDNEY, NSW, is a long way from Washington DC but, even at this distance, it is clear that the Bush Administration is falling to pieces.
In recent weeks, scanning the political coverage in the mainstream US media and sampling the blogs has been to watch a flood tide ebbing to reveal a rotting, skeletal hulk. It is the George W. Bush ship of fools, stuck in the mud for the world to see in all its mendacity, its incompetence, its faith-based stupidity.
It is possible, at this late stage, that even Bush himself has begun to realise something is wrong. That oddly simian face is ashen, the eyes leaden. The voice is shrill and its tone defensive.
“I’m the decider and I decide what’s best,” he squawked to reporters in the White House rose garden the other day, as the screws turned tighter on his disastrous Defence Secretary, Donald Rumsfeld. Can you imagine Roosevelt, Eisenhower or Kennedy blurting something like that?
Rummy is looking knackered too, with six retired generals going public to agree that he is “incompetent strategically, operationally and tactically”, to quote one of them.
These men would have been junior officers in Vietnam, veterans of the all-American nightmare they now see replicated in Iraq. They don’t want the mad old warmonger doing it over again in Iran. As former Marine Corps Lieutenant-General Gregory Newbold wrote in Time magazine: “… we must never again stand by quietly while those ignorant of and casual about war lead us into another one and then mismanage the conduct of it”.
But the Middle East quicksands are not all that is killing Bush’s presidency. Domestically, the rot is wide and deep. It is a budget deficit blowing out towards $US700 billion this financial year as Dubya juggles to fund his war while stealing from the American and immigrant poor to bestow tax cuts on the rich.
It is criminal sleaze in Washington, with the Republicans’ favourite influence peddler, Jack Abramoff, headed for jail, and one of Bush’s closest Texan buddies, the disgraced House Majority Leader, Tom DeLay, not far behind him.
It is arrogant, Nixonian trampling of the law to order the wiretapping of American citizens and the leaking of national security secrets. It is the rape of the environment to enrich big business, especially big oil. And resonating with ordinary Americans most of all, it is the loss of the city of New Orleans – not by Hurricane Katrina but by the bottomless incompetence of the feds’ post-apocalypse response.
This is a trash presidency, founded on lies and knavery, fraud and ignorant ideological crackpottery.
KARL ROVE is another faux-Texan wheeler-dealer sometimes described as Bush’s brain, a courtier most often seen superglued to the presidential right ear. Pink and pudgy, he looks like one of Disney’s three little pigs, although infinitely more smug.
Rove was shunted sideways this week in a shuffle of the White House deck chairs which also saw Dubya’s press secretary lose his job. His new assignment will be to divert the Republican Party from the coming train wreck of the Congressional mid-term elections this November.
That will be crucial to the survival of this gang. If the Democrats regain control of Congress, there would be a good chance of them moving to impeach Bush for high crimes and misdemeanours.
The famous Watergate journalist Carl Bernstein raised just that possibility in a recent article in Vanity Fair magazine. “We have never had a presidency in which the single unifying thread that flows through its major decision-making was incompetence stitched together with hubris and mendacity on a Nixonian scale,” he wrote.
Exactly. Compared to this lot, Bill Clinton was John the Baptist.
THE next question is this: what will the Howard Government do when Bush and co decide to bomb Iran?
On past performance, Australia will be the kiddie on the sideline, panting to join the team: “Pick me, pick me.” That, of course, is how we wangled our way into Iraq.
To quote the admirable US Marine Lieutenant-General Newbold again: “My sincere view is that the commitment of our forces to this fight was done with a casualness and swagger that are the special province of those who have never had to execute these missions – or bury the results.”

The shifting deck chairs on Bush’s listing ship of state
Houston Chronicle, United States – 6 hours ago
By CRAGG HINES. Scott McClellan is not the reason that President Bush’s polling numbers have tanked. Nor is Karl Rove. Press secretary …
Editorial: Deck chairs on the Titanic
The Capital Times, WI – Apr 22, 2006
White House press secretary Scott McClellan could not resist adding a little irony to the session where it was announced that he was being fired er, stepping off…
Poll-watching: a possible netroots project? I’d be interested in finding out more on this topic, wrt w/n this is an official/quasi-official position, how one might go about becoming a poll-watcher, and a job description (what such a person can or can’t do). Does a poll-watcher, e.g. have any ability to prevent a Diebold rep from showing up to “correct a problem with the machine” on voting day? How does one become a poll-watcher, I wonder.
Exit polling – pretty much the same question as far as – how to get in on this. Maybe wrong, but I’m under the impression that poll-watchers are more or less public officials, but exit polling is done by private sector?
IMHO, these are areas where the grassroots may be of immense value.
While waiting for the morning crew to sign on, I’d like to note that it’s nice that students at my alma mater are not happy with the political legacy the Hoover Institute has left us. (25)
As a leftover from Pac’s question last night, I always thought it was Patcha-cue-tek, although my unwilling brain seems to try to read it as Parachutec.
Too bad Japan’s a little too far away to participate in any local political activism. I could try the US Embassy, I suppose, but the Ambassador is W’s former partner in the Texas Rangers (can you say Cronyism? I knew you could).
As a recovering Texan myself, and one who spent many youthful days in Sugar Land with my friends, I’m watching the Nick Lampson race with great interest. Before Texas went Republican, the State often divided its Senate seats between a conservative and a liberal (I. e., Lyndon Johnson and Ralph Yarborough). So the sea of red is a recent phenomenon that has as much to do with the destruction of the labor unions and other liberal institutions as with real public sentiment. With work, Texas could be returned to the Dems.
in Indiana, poll-watcher credentials are issued thru the political parties or candidates. they merely allow you continued access to the polling place – normally strangers just aren’t allowed to hang out around the voting process. as a precinct committeeman, i am not officially on the local board so I am issued a pollwatchers card to have access on election day…a pollwatcher has no duties – they are merely observers.
exit polling is done by commercial entities and have no official part of the voting process.
new thread – old faces
VG: Gosh, I had no idea my wording would be construed as harsh. I was just being declarative. I understand your concern about having Republican reps, and try to give you and others in your situation options to exercise citizen power.
ED Teller: WE have two people wanting to start an Alaska group so far, including you, and our convention has been to wait for three before starting a group. We’re almost there!
There was extended thread discussion well into yesterday’s EPU’d Zone
Good luck, pach, with your roots project. Hope VG and Ed Teller get your responses here in this thread’s EPU’d Zone, where the crowd has thinned, most departing to the next thread.
–
Now, you’re talking turkey! This is what being a citizen is all about: calling or writing or visiting your elected representatives and expressing your wishes as to what kind of democratic government you want. And, let’s not forget to mention the Constitution (our license to be citizens) or the reliability of our voting machines while we are expressing ourselves. How many of you have, for instance, called your local Elections Supervisor, lately? Hold their feet to the fire! The sleeping electorate wakes up, at last!
*ilson46201,
new EPU’d Zone — no faces
–
margaret doesn’t count since she just dropped into the EPU’d Zone from the main comment thread.
that’s OK though, margaret, I’ll be here on and off all day if you care to chat.
Oh, yeah…!ztiF
–
Hey, punaise, it’s just freaky how you manage to show up like that all the time!
–
link got dropped,
I know this is a little late in this thread, but does anyone have a contact point for the Washington state roots project?
zeppo,
Here’s the instructions from a previous posting:
To get involved, send an email to Pachacutec01 at gmail dot com. Include only your state in the subject line, and please include your commenting name or kos user name in the body of your email if you can.
Be sure to tell him J i O sent you. *g*

way into the EPU zone…
yesterday’s report-back of Kerry’s speech from the MA FLD roots group is posted as a diary at dailykos here:
http://www.dailykos.com/storyo…..115230/700
5 of us attended Senator Kerry’s speech, “Patriotism and Dissent in America”, in Boston on Saturday. Afterward, we were able to speak with Kerry’s state director, Jon Jennings about our concerns. Jon was open to hearing from us and, we discovered, has read Firedoglake! Before the end of the our conversation, Jon offered to meet with us on a regular basis (monthly). We will certainly take him up on his offer – which he has already confirmed via email! On our way out, we saw Senator Kerry with a small group of people. Taking advantage of the opportunity, Prof Foland was able to have a short discussion with Senator Kerry about how the security clearance system is abused to suppress dissent.
A very successful day!
lots of detail provided at the diary link – including pictures ( don’t miss prof foland with senator kerry!)
selise,
Thanks for the link. You might think about posting it to a current comment thread so more people can see it. Just sayin’.
Sounds like a good time was had by all and you got a monthly meeting with Jon Jennings to boot. Good on ya!
Over time it will be informative to see if any FDL sensibilities migrate their way into Kerry’s brain.
–
“Over time it will be informative to see if any FDL sensibilities migrate their way into Kerry’s brain“
where ever it’s coming from – i do see a kerry starting to move in a better direction now… let’s hope he keeps it up… and that we can encourage him and support him to do the right thing.
p.s. i posted the link here so as not to interfere with the current thread… but since you suggest it, i’ll try to work up the courage to post it as an OT comment on the current thread (once it gets going on topic). hope no one will mind!
Link to a EPU’d Zone link to a very funny “meta” comment thread.
–
selise,
Post away! Have no fear, this project is headed up by Pachacutec who really wants it to work. Your comment can hardly be OT given the resources FDL is putting into it.
It’s also a good thing to steer FDLers toward your diary on kos.
–
Good job on your posting , selise. Don’t worry if you don’t get a response. It might be nice to e-mail the link to Pach just to make sure he sees it. As I said, this is his project and he wants it to work.
–
selise,
And a follow-up posting urging Taylor to podcast. There you go. You’ll be a regular before you know it.
Thanks for the EPU’d Zone plug. It all started here.
Cleaning up the FDL joint after the Late Nite comment crew has left to the latest posting and greener thread meadows is much less hectic than the comment threads all afluff and aflutter with posting piling on posting.
There may be nobody reading this, but every once and awhile the tar-pit that is the EPU’d Zone traps another unwary visitor that I get a chance to chat with.
All in all, worth the trade-offs to me.

Wow!
I can’t wait for the CSI (pick your city)TV show to feature this new technology that can match digital photographs to the cameras that took them.
“But if it can be shown that the original images were taken by the person’s cell phone or camera, it becomes a much stronger case than if you just have a bunch of digital images that we all know are notoriously easy to manipulate.”
Fridrich and two members of her Binghamton University research team – Jan Lukas and Miroslav Goljan – are coinventors of the new technique, which can also be used to detect forged images.
The three have applied for two patents related to their technique, which provides the most robust strategy for digital image forgery detection to date, even as it improves significantly on the accuracy of other approaches.
Fridrich’s technique is rooted in the discovery by her research group of this simple fact: Every original digital picture is overlaid by a weak noise-like pattern of pixel-to-pixel non-uniformity.
Although these patterns are invisible to the human eye, the unique reference pattern or “fingerprint” of any camera can be electronically extracted by analyzing a number of images taken by a single camera.
That means that as long as examiners have either the camera that took the image or multiple images they know were taken by the same camera, an algorithm developed by Fridrich and her co-inventors to extract and define the camera’s unique pattern of pixel-to-pixel non-uniformity can be used to provide important information about the origins and authenticity of a single image.

Pach- I would not have commented had I not detected this tone in some of your comments before when you address “activism”. Encourage, yes. But, for myself, I (generally or personally) don’t like being shamed or scolded or having my head metaphorically banged against the wall when I don’t meet your criteria for appropriate involvement. I’ve seen that by the Armandos of the left over at dKos, and it is a turn off for me. By contrast this is not the overall tone of FDL. That is why I have been a loyal reader of FDL for quite some time. You have been an outstanding contributor to FDL, and added hugely to the discussion, and I much appreciate that. But, on this one issue, I guess we have different sensibilities.
zeppo: just send an email to stateproject at gmail dot com with your state in the subject line.
Cheers!
VG: this is a conversation where the medium is not our friend. Pixels make for poor communication. If you’d like to email me, we can set up time to talk on the phone to clear up any misunderstanding.
Pach,
Was my advice to zeppo wrong here?
You’re right, Pach, pixel for pixel exchanges are shallow substitutes for deeper meanings conveyed by voice to ear. Hope you work things out with Valley Girl.

I just got back from a “Crashing the Gates” meeting sponsored by the local Democratic club. Markos spoke and then answered questions. (He was terrific, by the way. Copies of the book were on sale, so now I don’t have to go through Amazon.)
Anyway, I have not been active in the local club; when I moved here back in 1989 it was very much a good ol’ Southern boys club. But one of the questioners had identified herself as being on the county executive committee, and asked how they could become more grassroots friendly. So I said what the heck, and at the reception I introduced myself and asked how I could help. Within about ten minutes she had introduced me to several other people and — voila — I’m on the executive committee if I want to be. Which I probably do, although I think I should find out exactly what that involves first.
Who knew it could be that easy to get involved in local politics? Not just stuffing envelopes or precinct walking, although I’m sure I’ll wind up doing that too, but at (at least in a small way) the planning level? I went as a Kossack (and FDLer too) and wham! I’m a member of the Establishment. It turns out that sometimes you don’t have to crash the gate; knock softly and it opens.
By the way, Markos said it hasn’t been announced yet, but YearlyKos is turning into the place to be for Democratic presidential candidates. Feingold can’t be there because the Wisconsin convention is that weekend, but 6 or 8 others (in addition to Warner, who has already said he’s coming) will be there. I didn’t know we had that many, and he didn’t tell me who, but I’m even more excited about going than I was before.
Oops — that’s what I get for bookmarking a FDL page! I thought I was clicking on the current version, so you may ignore this.
