(guest blog by Taylor Marsh)
In this corner we have John McCain and Jerry Falwell.
McCain, formerly known as the "straight talker," but now commonly referred to as Senator Suck Up by yours truly, has moved into lock step with George W. Bush. This has happened over many months, as Senator Suck Up has become enthralled with the idea of becoming Bush’s heir. In fact, McCain has even flip flopped on the Federal Marriage Amendment, though his staffers are saying it’s just a states’ right thing. Falwell and the other religious right-wingers are dreaming it will become a reality, so McCain has to thread the needle on this one, which he seems to be doing so far. So, Senator Suck Up is now in partnership with man who said some things that no one should ever forget, especially after 9/11.
"I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America. I point the finger in their face and say ‘you helped this happen’." – Reverend Jerry Falwell on Pat Robertson’s 700 Club
Of course, Reverend Falwell’s list of whopper statements are legend. "Blow them away in the name of the Lord," is one of my personal statements. Hell hath no fury like a right-winger unhinged.
In the other corner we have Rudy gays are great (they are – at least my dear friends are), marriage is really serial monogamy (it’s not supposed to be) Giuliani helping out Ralph Reed in Georgia. Formerly the Christian Coalition’s head man, Reed has fallen far from grace and his once golden boy status.
Ralph is in deep, deep, deep trouble down south in a race he would have walked through easily, EXCEPT for the fact that he got involved with Jack Abramoff. Now Reed is up to his eye balls in criticism and flagging poll numbers, with his own people coming after him, as Reed is poised to take the Republicans down with him.
So, the two biggest Republican heavyweights are squared off in separate right-wing corners, just waiting for the 2008 bell.
John McCain recently courted Jerry Falwell. So I guess Rudy Giuliani felt he needed to get Ralph Reed. According to the Associated Press, Giuliani has agreed to headline a fundraiser in May for Reed’s campaign for Georgia Lt. Gov.
Oh, the irony. A pro-gay rights, pro-choice, pro-gun control New Yorker stumping with a right-wing Christian crook. If Giuliani had to pick an evangelical activist to campaign with, couldn’t he of found someone who wasn’t Jack Abramoff’s best friend? Shouldn’t the so-called law and order Mayor be shunning a cynical political operator who defrauded fellow Christians and robbed and ruined Indian tribes? Doesn’t he realize that a path to the presidency no longer runs through Ralph Reed?
Campaigning with the likes of Rick Santorum, as Giuliani did in Philadelphia today, is bad enough. But Reed represents a whole ‘nother level of despicable. If Rudy wanted to show solidarity with a conservative moonbat, he should’ve picked Reed’s primary opponent, Casey Cagle.
Neither of them are the best man. They both propped up President Bush when he didn’t deserve it, putting the Republican party before country. To say Republicans are the last thing we need going forward, looking towards Iran, North Korea, the federal and trade deficits, is an understatement of gargantuan proportions.

What did Jon Stewart say? “Are you playin’ to the crazy base?”
If it’s McCain and Clinton on ‘08–and God forbid–watch how they’ll go after Hillary for equivocating and pandering. Then McCain will be struck by lightening, whereupon he will rise to sit at the right hand of God to judge the quick and the dead.
in ‘08, goldang it!
Actually, it makes perfect sense. Ralph Reed is a phony. He doesn’t believe the Christian right ideology he peddles. Nothing makes that clearer than his involvement in the Abramoff scandal, where he was tricking his fellow wingnuts into helping with gambling promotion, something that “Bible-believing Christians” abhor.
In Reed’s part of the country, the way to get ahead in politics is to talk about how born again you are, so that’s what he does.
A sobering thought from a lifelong Democrat: what if, after Hillary wins in 2008, she then bombs Iran in 2009? I’m really not comfortable with Senator Clinton’s Iraq stance and her continued support for the Bush policies there. Of coures this speculation may all be moot. For the alternative just might be a President McCain and veep Gingrich. Same result; more war, with bigger stakes. Something to ponder perhaps? Something to help us sleep better at night. Puleeze…someone give us a real choice in ‘08. I’m desperate!
Off topic but check it out…

The Lord saith, vengeance is mine.
So why do I keep hearing wackos like Falwell and Robertson, literal icons of the religious right, attempting to violate God’s wishes by promising their own private “vengeance” on various and sundry “targets”?
Just like those wackos wanting to hasten the Apocalypse. The Bible has God saying time and again that events will transpire in their own time. If so, why would a true believer think they can “rush events”, in effect telling God what timeline to conform to.
Wasn’t Robertson partners in a diamond mine employing slaves? Would slaves be considered “illegal aliens”?
give us s’more Gore
When McCain’s handlers prep him for a sit-down with slimy beasts like Falwell, do you think that they recommend “earth-tones”? Giuliani stumping with Reed is just too rich, I won’t even try.
peace,
jim
Ralph Reed?… ‘But he seemed to be such a good boy…’
Hasn’t Reed been indicted yet? Abramoff has long tentacles.
Where is Giuliani getting his advice from these days – was he listening to the same guys advising Tancredo ? Sensenbrenner ? – jeebus, 5′ll get ya 10 Rudy doesn’t make that gig in May
Oklahoma kiddo – wrt hillary & iran war @5…. if that should come to pass then we *must* do what we now call on republicans to do – to repudiate and resist the actions of the president.
p.s. i pray (and i’m agnostic!) for a president who will use our military ONLY for our actual defense.
OT…Marge, a commenter over at Crooks and Liars, brought up a good point about Rovesama’s new position at the WH. If he’s now responsible for keeping a Republican majority on the Hill, then why should American taxpayers be paying his salary? Isn’t this something the RNC should be funding? Maybe I’m naive, but IMHO this could be a good Democratic ‘talking point.’
Thanks Larry, I really like his point about the problem of bomb damage assessment.

This is seriously OT. I haven’t been keeping up as much as I usually do, and I haven’t read the comments lately at all, so maybe this has been explained and I missed it-Where is Reddhead?

sunny– Redd is on vacation. Not to worry, she’ll be back.
We let the Republicans glorify Reagan (ketchup is a school lunch vegetable) and did the same for Guiliani. He’s the mayor who knew the fire and police radios didn’t work in skyscrapers but wouldn’t buy new ones–saving money and losing lives. Also, wouldn’t let the fire helicopters land on the burning WTC–too risky –although pilots begged to go–and that was the emergency plan. He’s an arrogant prick and the Democrats are dumb as shit to let him get a free ride—as they did with McCain also.
“Just like those wackos wanting to hasten the Apocalypse”
Does this include the preznit?
Sorry, just wondering…
Someone needs to tell Guiliani his fifteen minutes are up.
just walked by teevee to hear Tweety making the case for Bush axing Richard Cheney to an almost aploplectic Buchanan – will he take up permanent residency or is this just a visit to the reality based community ?
Whew, thanks all!
The plan for Ralph Reed is to win in Georgia and one day become president. Perhaps long after Ralph has left us he can be canonized with a nom de plume along the lines of something really ecclesiastical and iconic, like say for example, “Saint Hypocrite”. The scent of hypocrisy surrounding Reed is suffocating and almost debilitating.
Btw, Awesome job Taylor. Double posting aint easy. You have most assuredly moved way up on my favorites list.
On Olbermann, David Schuster is connecting the dots that FDL had a week ago — Rove has now become a subject, not on the prosecution witness list. A + B = indictment(s) coming soon, now that the GJ is back.
From his lips to Fitz ears.
Van de Hei next.
I think Teaty (changing his name right now– he sucks on the teat of the rethug cow) took a pass on the morning Kool- aid, cbl. My SO looked at me and said, Tweety is singing a new tune, then he shook his head and said, maybe not, he’s playing the part of outrage…
angie,
Speaking of ‘Teaty’, Are’nt we still waiting for full disclosure from that (insert favorite disparaging name) guy?
Giuliani is someone most New Yorkers loath, similarly would be why did you elect Bush twice. Warning! you don’t want to know the Giuliani that we know. There is nothing pro about Giuliani except pro fascist.
“Senator Suck Up” I do believe we have a weiner with that moniker! LOL
A nice normal day here in N. Virginia.
My daughter is getting married Saturday.
27 people from my immediate family are arriving today/tomorrow.
My biopsy this morning was clear, no cancer.
Rove will prob be indicted.
Ho hum, just another normal day.
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
Bustednuckles @ 29–
huh? help.
It may take the next Presidential election for the Repugs to learn that the prejudice pony they keep riding might have been saddled up one time too many. I have a feeling the mighty middle has heard enough…well…we can hope so anyway.

Rove indictment on Apr. 28th
Mark your calendars!
Hi, everyone, just tuning in at last.
Here’s to a busy day for the GJ tomorrow, but I agree with others who say soon, if not that soon.
Regarding this thread, I find it fascinating (but not too surprising) that there are nothing but criminals and heartless maniacs available to the goopers for 08. As the time nears for the campaigns, we will have even more evidence of corruption and criminality on that side of the aisle. I can’t even take a Guiliani candidacy seriously, can’t imagine the christians accepting his multi-divorced lifestyle and the law and orders accepting his Kerik connection. Reed is toast that is stuck and burning, Falwell’s flock is critical of him and have recommended retirement, but he won’t go. McCain has a bunch of votes upcoming and how he and all the rest handle the bad news from further WH indictments and changes will help frame his POV and give the Dems ammunition for their campaigns. So who else is there? Lieberman won’t even be around to be the “centrist”, so it looks like and all-chaff campaign.
I love it.
Hurray for your biopsy, egregious!…seize the day and dance the wedding night away.
We’re all in this for the kids yet to be….
yay, egregious. many happy returns!!!
egregious, I’m sorry to hear that you had a biopsy of anything, but so happy to know you’re ok. Congratulations on the wedding, send you and your family all blessings and a happy future.
I think Busted is talking about Tweety’s connection to Plame via Russert, yes?
Can’t wait for Reed to fall on his face, and take Giuliani (he of newfound poor judgment) with him.
I’ve written a bit about this, and about a possible related implication of the Karl Rove demotion, here.
Have you heard about the nonsense with MedD re: sending folks letters threatening to cut them off for nonpayment when SS was supposed to be taking money out of thier checks?? What a damned nightmare, just a terrible program and a worse execution of same.
Wow, egregious, what a big day for you. Best wishes!
JP, your “here” link goes to a FDL fatal error.
Chatty aren’t I?
I got great news today, too. I got my vacation time approved and will be able to go to Vegas in June, Yahoo!
Medicare D is the the absolute worst thing foisted on our elders and the sickest among us by this corrupt govmint. ptooey! for shame. Congrats on your vaca, zennurse– happy yearlykos to you.

Just a thought….if it comes down to single seats in the Senate and Rove is working behind the scenes, does he try to take out Lieberman at the knees? After all, Joey still votes for D leadership.
egregious
Fantastic news all round before the big day, eh?
Congrats to the daughter and her fiance from the Great White North!
Do people not realize that Ralph Reed is gay? It’s one of those open secrets around here (Georgia), although I do have confirmation of that from a source within the Georgia GOP.
Egregious — So way happy to hear all of your news. That is really terrific.
Egreg..Good news.
*Teaty must have kicked the whole barrel of Kool-aid over today. He was postively on fire beating back Smirk-Conehead. He has earned the name Matthews back for a day.
*Someone above mentioned the great middle. I think that there is a realignment going on again. As gas nears $3.00 a gallon–suddenly those two plump, bearded gays smooching on city hall seem a little less threatening than the smooch given by the Republican congress to the red faced man in cowboy boots with a tax free oil contract in ANWR shoved in has back pocket.
Kitty Pilgrim had Bernie Sanders and another Democrat on and they were pushing for some investigations into the oil congloms. Suddenly a congress that does some work seems almost novel.
Recent polling also suggests that lots of Americans are not ready to force women to bear a rapists child and also aren’t ready to execute abortion doctors to boot.
That Smirk-Conehead was talking about the Repubes stepping away from the “extreme” elememnts…
Our job is place Jerry Falwell and that “Blame America First for 9/11″ comment firmly around the neck of every Republican with spitting distance.
Also, saw Cruella De Carville on with the Republican “fear” schtick…”The Democrats are going to investigate the President!” Hey, Botox Face..look at the polls…that is not something that a lot of people seem to running away from. As a matter of fact, keep pushing that. We get to call you a fear monger and we also get to tell you how out of touch you are with 67% of the nation.
“Investigate the guy that started the war, ruined the economy and sold out to big business?”
Bring it on.

A little economic populism helps too. Go Bernie!
Please stop calling the Christian Right the Christian Right and refer to them always as the Idolatry Right. The Idolatry Right knows very well that language matters and that if you name a thing you own it. They may be imbeciles when it comes to book learning and moral autists when it comes to the spirit and the flesh but you could learn a thing or two about politics from them nevertheless.
Great news egregious.
Ralph Reed gay?…Well, ‘Keep on Smiling’

Sorry for the glitch. If that is true, he is toast for president. I have numerous relatives in Arizona (who have friends) that liked Bill Clinton. They will become more livid than I if they find this out. (Of course, only the Blogs will disseminate this because WIMPS lke Schumer will be cowering in a corner and putting on a diaper!

Sonate…
That was known when he was skyrocketing to stardom in 2000.
He was also on record–talking about “Gooks”. If I recall, not in the heat of battle in Vietnam 1967, but sometime around 2000.
One of the many “indescretions” that the “liberal” press failed to report in 2000.

Technically, there is only monogamy. The proper term is “serial polygamy,” that is, more than one mate, but one after the other rather than at the same time.
“Serial monogamy” has that “born-again virgin” feel to it.
new thread: “Sierra Club”
McCain is a tragic figure. Presidential ambitions has stripped him of whatever honor he had as a statesman. Indeed, his past words on important issues, the verbal hoops he is jumping through to justify his current opposite stance, underlines a felt embarassment for him, in his vain quest to fill Bush’s shoes. Only Shakespear could do justice in characterizing his blind ambition, and only us, as observers of the political scene, will go away saddened by the stunning display of human weakness we all are heir to, but try to always suppress.
“Please stop calling the Christian Right the Christian Right”
They should just be the “radical right” or “right wing extremists”… don’t dignify them with a religious handle that speaks to millions of Americans. If they’re marginalized as extremists, Christian American will stop thinking that these nutcases actually represent them. I think a big part of the problem is that some Christians have been deluded into thinking that a group of gangsters whose views differ completely from their own are their only legitimate spokespeople. These gangsters are radicals and extremists. In reality, they hold views inconsistent with Christian, much less Protestant, doctrine. Do you have have any doubt that Luther would’ve written in favor of their burning? They are no better than the talibs or the Tim McVeighs, and they should be just as marginalized.

Just what we need in the Oval Office, ANOTHER Republican sociopath.
I like to call them the Anti-Christian Right. Republicans and Pharisees. They do worship the 21st century’s Anti-Christ. just google “bush” and “anti-christ”. I like to print out a couple of those pages and stick them under the windshield wipers of of really big SUVs sporting W stickers and religious symbols. Culture jamming.

Jim Talent – Too Gay for Missouri?
McCain has got to be a real loser to suckle Bush for his 30%. Does he think 30% will get him the primary?
I would think that he would bleed support as his Bush teat suckling is exposed.
Or is he adding 20% of dumb-F democrats that would vote for him and getting to the easiest 50% in history?
Along with the Bush/Rove phone/doner list that are going to stick with the team…but get a real man of a captain this time. We fool are selves if we think these Republicans are not going to delude themselves into giving there team just one more shot every time.
I was down in VA during Katrina and heard them lament and finally turn on Bush, but they just could not keep themselve on the detox program. It takes constant scandel (which sadly is being delivered) to keep these folks on the 12 step program.

Raygun’s takin’ a dirt nap, and junior’s had two terms. Looks like they’re fresh out of Howdy Doodies.
This week was the 100th anniversary of the Great San Francisco earthquake. There has been a lot of press about this locally. I heard an interview yesterday with author Simon Winchester. He has a new book out about the earthquake. He was claiming that the Christian Right in America got started in 1906 in Southern California.
A preacher at a small church predicted that God would be sending a message soon. Two days later, the great earthquake happened. He claimed it was punishment for all the evil things going on in San Francisco. After that, people flocked to his church.
100 years later, same old story… 9/11, Katrina. What a vengeful God they have.
AARP was a strong backer of Medicare D.
I tear up their mailings at the PO – I won’t have their crap in my house.
anyone catch mccain on jay leno this week. it was just a few nights ago. rather weird to see someone like him on the show – which i almost never watch but “stayed tuned” cause i wanted to hear what he had to say. don’t want to mis-state, but my general recollection is that he started with some hard love (yes, there’ve been lots of errors, corruption, etc.) and finished up with something rah rah on the rethugs warmaking. i’d be interested to read a transcript if anyone has a suggestion of where to find. thx!
Call me slow, but where’s the news via a vis McCain? He’s been sucking up to the WH thugs for a few years now, which always made me suspect he made some kind of back room deal.
About Guiliani, isn’t this the best kind of news the Ds could get? He’s struggling to denounce all the things that made him a republican that new yorkers could like, and has picked the wrong horse to boot. Looking like Fitzmas to me…
Ha, Rudy of the “family values” wing of the right-wing, yeah, gotta love it.
RE: Roberton’s mines..(#7)
Somewhere in my memory,I recall those mines being part of a bigger scam.
First,Charles Taylor, the bloodthirsty maniac in charge of Liberia at the time,is a good buddy of Pat’s.Taylor was up to his eyeballs in the mining bidness with Robertson.
Second,Operation Blessing,a charity of Robertson’s meant to be for humanitarian aid,was also used to pay to get equipment to the mines. The aid supplies were offloaded, the equipment loaded up(under cover of darkness and payoffs?Probably, but that’s my own wild speculation)and under the auspices of Operation Blessing flown to the mines.
There are several articles online about these two maniacs being in cahoots over this mining thing,it’s hard to pick just one.Makes you wonder who else these so called men of faith have done business with over the years.I wish the IRS would go after these megachurch McWorship guys in a big way, betcha they’d find tons of fraud and tax evasion.
As for Reed,I live in GA,and loathe that little weasel. He and Newtie took an already corrupt state government and milked the corruption for all it’s worth.Bastards.
The upside to all this ass kissing and incestuous political manuvering is that it’s easy to see who is so far gone they can’t be redeemed. Those are the people who need to be drummed out of politics first.Ridiculed, scorned and shamed, along with being publicly confronted with their crimes and hypocrisy wherever they go,and that’s the nicest thing I can think of that they deserve.
Remember ‘Damien’ from that horror show with Greg Peck and Lee Remick? I swear that r. reed was the prototype for that character,, even if the show was made way before reed was even born.
Yeah, McCain’s pretty worthless, and I’m glad I’m not the only one calling him a suckup. Like I said in comments over at the Washington Monthly yesterday,
he endorsed Bush in June 2004, at which time he turned into a total Bush suck-up, and has subsequently turned into a broad-spectrum GOP suckup, sucking up to both Bush’s Big Business backers and the ‘Christian’ Right crowd.
His approach has been to do as much of this as possible under the radar, so he could preserve the full value of his straight-talk brand, and until the Falwell thing, it seemed to be working.
Unlike Guiliani, though, McCain’s got a good chance to be the 2008 GOP nominee; I’d say it’s either him or George Allen. But they’e both sleazeballs.
Most people only know Giuliani as “America’s Mayor” on 9/11. He performed pretty well then, certainly much better than Bush did on that same day. But I also remember Rudy Giuliani jumping for joy at the acquittal of the NY police officers who gunned down Amadou Diallo on his doorstep. Rudy’s no moderate, no matter how many gay friends he has.
