On Lindsey Graham and the Censure Hearings:

I was there at the hearing. Graham’s show was the most entertaining portion of the event, other than when Leahy raised his voice (always a treat). The whole thing was a little weird. Most of the Republican arguments against censure were weak, canned, and hypocritical. Graham was kind of a prick with Dean, but that was part of the game. His engagement of Dean was much more honorable than Cornyn, for example, who did a “hit and run” on Dean by showing up, insulting Dean in his opening statement, and then leaving. In another era, Graham would have been a Democrat, and on the whole, he is really one of those guys that you hate when he is on the other team, but don’t mind so much when he is on your side. I would love to sit down with Graham and try to convince him that he is backing the wrong horse and that George Bush does not deserve his advocacy.
peace,

You’ll see the joke that is Scarborough (that guy who probably killed his intern) County… they had video of major cities and were talking about the nukes, and that they might have the bomb now, etc.

Its just like the Hollywood produced run-up to the last war, and it seems like they think they can do it the same way. And the support for milary action.. 48% for.

It was as if the people behing these policies were the very people on TV, it was as if they were holding up cue cards.

Kinda sucks that that is the only piece of news I have seen in the last few weeks. Tune in for a second and its the same schmuck amature hour losers like Scarborough.

The Powell doctrine is an excellent subject to raise. If we’d followed the Powell doctrine — if Powell would have followed his own philosophy — Iraq wouldn’t look like it does today.

While I love all the analysis we progressives are so good at producing, we seem to lose sight of what made the current regime so successful: simple, easily digested, monosyllabic tag lines that resonated with the NASCAR, WWF, bass fishing, Clinton-voting demographic.

I submitted this the other day and I’ll throw it out again.
Name one thing this guy has done right. (OK, it’s eight words)

Personalize it. We’re not trying to convince each other, we’re after a different market. If your mechanic screws up your car, do you go back to the same place? If your spouse cheats on you, can you ever trust them again?

I know it sounds much like a country and western torch song, but remember who you’re trying to get to listen.

(cue the steel guitar)
You’ve been wronged and cheated on, and now it’s time to move along.

Steve Clark, #60, I agree. With all the struggles and upheavals of the 20th Century, we’re going to look wistfully back at a time when America was at its peak, morally, politically, and militarily. In some ways I’m envious of my dad, member of the WWII generation. He lived at exactly the right time to see America at its greatest, when it seemed to have achieved its promise. I believe the decline began with Vietnam, but I don’t think it was inevitable. Electing the right people would have made the difference, but I do believe it’s too late now. Unfortunately, I’m afraid we’re going to take the rest of the world with us.

John Casper #82

I agree. While Colin Powell’s credibility has been put through the blender, the principles of the Powell Doctrine are more important now than ever. They show that there is a reasoned and reasonable way for this country to assess and manage conflicts in this world. The “I did it because it seemed like a good idea to my gut at the time” of Bush and company is what got us into the Iraq guagmire in the first place. We need to demand more of them with regard to Iran and the Powell Doctrine is exactly the way to go.
