He may just be into burly male cops who can mimic 14 year old girls.

How about a little habeas corpus here? Produce the body of the hot to trot teeny bopper or go cut bait.

If there’s anything I hate it’s a prick tease in blue.

The problem with his bahavior while at TIME wasn’t looking at the pornography, but doing something illegal while at someone else’s computer.

Whether it was online gambling, running a pyramid scheme, or surfing blocked sites, he was masquerading as someone else (computer ID) and leaving a trail of shit on someone else’s computer.

Have you ever done a mouse scroll, only to have the page revert to a several-steps-prior page? Imagine the shock if you went from business to another person’s page views!!! Imagine feeling violated… just like by a burgler or trespasser who takes a shower and uses your towels, then browses through the fridge, the mailbox, and your kid’s photos. Even if he locks the door when he leaves, you’d probably be angry!

Employee morale depends upon being able to trust your coworkers. If he did this to several underlings, he was worse than a weasel! I wouldn’t want to see such a person in any management position, and certainly not a sensitive government one!

Been there, done that, wore out the t-shirt. I had an FBI B/C for a federal firearms license (sorry). I was really surprised how thorough such a check is. They do interview neighbors, check police records and intrude into your life like no others have ever done. How they could miss important info is unconceivable.

Having dealt with a number of background checks, Time doesn’t get to keep quiet because it’s, “a personell issue.”

The closest they get is to say no one asked the right questions (and that’s not really likely; no one os going to say, “did he surf for kiddie porn during office hours?” but they will ask, “would you trust him with “x”? “Was there ever a time you knew him to be less than completely trustworthy?”, “Did he ever do anything to make you question his judgement?”).

Background checks are federal investigations, and they have all the delicacy of cops coming in to ask about your private life, i.e. none at all. Lying to one of them is lyig to a federal investigator, which is a crime.

I have a dumb question… Doyle was talking dirty with an undercover agent who said she was a minor. Where is the actual crime? He may be a potential child molestor or a potential statutory rapist but in actuality what is the crime called?

Suppose he knew the person was older than the age of consent even though she lied and said she was 14 (remember she was an undercover agent so I’m assuming 18+). If he knew, somehow that she was old enough, would it still be a crime?

Now please don’t bombard me with all sorts of grief for asking. I’m just curious where the actual harm occured in this specific case and wondering why it isn’t as if someone sold him catnip and he is being charged with a drug crime.

I know I’m late to the party here, but I have to comment. This article implies that anyone who looks at porn is a child molester and cannot be trusted with state secrets. This is just insane. Are you next going to suggest that someone who has consensual sex with another adult out of wedlock is a child molester and shouldn’t be given positions in government? I hate Bushco as much as anyone, but use some common sense, please. Don’t use some weak argument like that. Does anyone know if Time even had an internet porn policy at the time he was caught? It took many companies a long time to establish policies about online porn after internet access from the workplace became common. If Time did have a policy against it when he got caught, the most you can say is that the guy broke company policy. Unless he got caught looking at child porn, you certainly couldn’t conclude from that incident that he was a pedophile. Sure it was stupid because it was at work, but when did viewing porn become a crime in this country? That being said, I hope Brian Doyle gets put away for a while.

Ho ho ho. I’ve mentioned this before, somewheres, re background checks. My initial one took 8 mos (Busy FBI Office). We were supposed to get updated reviews every five years. Uh-huh. At around 15 years into my budding career, somebody noticed and sent out notices requiring all our financial records (this time, the Office of Internal Affairs). I did not respond. Too busy. Retired after 25 years. Never heard another word.

Tamara Smith said: “I would assume that someone applying for a job that needed an FBI background check would be required to sign some sort of waiver…”

Righto. Here it is:

UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
AUTHORIZATION FOR RELEASE OF INFORMATION

Carefully read this authorization to release information about you, then sign and date it in ink.

I Authorize any investigator, special agent, or other duly accredited representative of the authorized Federal agency conducting my background investigation, to obtain any information relating to my activities from individuals, schools, residential management agents, employers, criminal justice agencies, credit bureaus, consumer reporting agencies, collection agencies, retail business establishments, or other sources of information. This information may include, but is not limited to, my academic, residential, achievement, performance, attendance, disciplinary, employment history, criminal history record information, and financial and redit information.

I authorize the Federal agency conducting my investigation to disclose the record of my background investigation to the requesting agency for the purpose of making a determination of suitability or eligibility for a security clearance.

I Understand that, for financial or lending institutions, medical institutions, hospitals, health care professionals, and other sources of information, a separate specific release will be needed, and I may be contacted for such a release at a later date. Where a separate release is requested for information relating to mental health treatment or counseling, the release will contain a list of the specific questions, relevant to the job description, which the doctor or therapist will be asked.

I Further Authorize any investigator, special agent, or other duly accredited representative of the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Department of Defense, the Defense Investigative Service, and any other authorized Federal agency, to request criminal record information about me from criminal justice agencies for the purpose of determining my eligibility for access to classified information and/or for assignment to, or retention in a sensitive National Security position, in accordance with 5 U.S.C. 9101.

I understand that I may request a copy of such records as may be available to me under the law.

I Authorize custodians of records and sources of information pertaining to me to release such information upon request of the investigator, special agent, or other duly accredited representative of any Federal agency authorized above regardless of any previous agreement to the contrary.

I Understand that the information released by records custodians and sources of information is for official use by the Federal Government only for the purposes provided in this Standard Form 86, and that it may be redisclosed by the Government only as authorized by law.

Copies of this authorization that show my signature are as valid as the original release signed by me. This authorization is valid for five (5)years from the date signed or upon the termination of my affiliation with the Federal Government, whichever is sooner.

The full form, which is a REAL pain in the ass to fill out, is available here:
