wrong question.

the question to ask isn’t

who gets the cocktail weenies?

but

who is a cocktail weenie of a reporter?

i have two nominees in mind

j. vanderhei

and

j.smith.

p.s.

on not being able to post–

i notice that when i type a comment at fdl it often takes a looooong, looooong time for the letters i have just typed to appear within the writing “box” on fdl.

this does not happen at any other site.

is it possible for a poster who sees a blank “box” after hitting” post”

that his comment is on the way but taking a looong time to show up at the bottom of the comments page?

Actually, today’s Wapo story advanced the ball a bit. Buried deep in the story is this new snippet:

Libby also leaked information from the National Intelligence Estimate to Bob Woodward of The Washington Post prior to the date that the White House said it was officially declassified. In sworn testimony, Woodward told Fitzgerald that on June 27, 2003 — 11 days before the Libby-Miller conversation — Libby told him about the CIA estimate and an Iraqi effort to obtain “yellowcake” uranium in Africa, according to a statement Woodward released on Nov. 14, 2005.

In an interview, Woodward said his notes, which were not released publicly but were shown to Fitzgerald, included Libby using the word “vigorous” to describe the Iraqi effort. Libby used similar language when he provided the NIE information Bush declassified to Miller at their July 8, 2003, meeting, according to Fitzgerald’s filing.

The precise status of the information at the time Libby provided it to Woodward is unclear because of conflicting accounts of the declassification process provided by Libby and McClellan. Fitzgerald’s court filing does not provide the date when Bush and Cheney — who have both been interviewed by the special prosecutor — said they authorized Libby’s disclosures.

WH seems to be saying that that they “pre-disclosed” the info to NYT because it was going to be officially declassified a week later anyway. Now, this puts the leak about 20 days before the July 18 official declassification date.

Also, what is interesting to me that they selected Woodward and Miller to leak this.
But anyone with street sense could have told them that those two wouldn’t or couldn’t publish those stories. Woodward would have - and has - kept it for his book and by that time, Miller was asked to “stand in the corner”
by NYT editors because of her WMD reporting and at least some NYT editors were questioning themselves. So WH had to go to the B-team guy Novak, who was ready and willing to oblige.

Open Letter to the Editors of the Washington Post –

Who better than the once fiercely honorable, now sadly neutered Washington Post to lick the fingers and the posteriors of the Bush Administration and its criminally indicted minions?

Disclosures Are Called Unrelated To Plame Case
Libby’s Lawyer Rebuts Special Prosecutor’s Filing
By R. Jeffrey Smith and Jim VandeHei

“The revelation of former White House official I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby’s involvement in authorized disclosures of sensitive intelligence information does not undermine Libby’s contention that he innocently forgot about conversations he may have had with reporters regarding covert CIA operative Valerie Plame, Libby’s attorney said yesterday.”

The Washington Post published a fluff piece on Dobson that Ben Domenech wrote as a freelance writer… at the age of 16!!

I went looking for it after reading a user’s comment on The Post’s blog:

http://blog.washingtonpost.com.....l#comments

After a bit of Google work, turns out that this was already mentioned in some comments at DailyKos.

But I think it deserves a bit more attention because it raises so many questions about cronyism among the cocktail weenie set in D.C. and about editorial integrity at the Post.

The Washington Post

April 19, 1998, Sunday, Final Edition

SECTION: OUTLOOK; Pg. C02

LENGTH: 1225 words

HEADLINE: Dobson’s Choice; Why the Conservative Outsider’s Agenda Worries GOP Leaders

BYLINE: Benjamin Domenech

BODY:
There is an emerging force within the Republican Party, a man who, as he attempts to alter the party’s entire focus, has managed to escape the attention of many inside the Beltway. His strength is drawn from social conservative activists. His cause is abortion. And his words these days — about unkept promises — are making Republican leaders in Congress extremely nervous.

The man is James Dobson.

(…)

Benjamin Domenech is a freelance writer whose work has appeared in the American Conservative and Human Events.

Who do these idiots in the media think they are f-ning kidding? It’s damn hard to find anyone at all that doesn’t understand the implications of Bush authorizing Libby’s leak. Outside of the right wing machine and their immediate families, there are literally no people who do not understand what is going on.

Given this, why bother with the obfuscation? What the hell does the Post think it’s doing? Brit Hume’s delusional take down of the ticker title shows just how out of touch the cocktail weenie crowd is with America. Do the cokehead producers at Fox even in their wildest delusions imagine that the current Orwelien pipe dream extends beyond the walls of their own offices?

Honestly, Bagdad Bob is looking like a pro compared to the desperate amateur hour on display at the Post and at Fox.

Do they not think that after the president goes down later this year that the angry backlash won’t be focused laser like on the media enablers? Does Woodward really think because he and the Bushes are in the same social club that the rest of the world is going to give him a pass for trying to paper over this generations most obvious political scandal? Club loyalty is only as good as the credibility that extends beyond it, and Bush Jr. is burning more and more of that just to keep treading water. Who will ever take Woodward seriously again? Who will ever take anyone in the social club seriously again? Thousands of lives spent establishing a reputation only to burn it away to keep Dick Cheney’s smugness intact? Is that what you all signed up for?

Wake up and smell the coffee people. The scandals are plentiful and nearly bottomless at this point. It’s low hanging fruit. Really. How do the editors of the Post look themselves in the eye in the morning and print garbage like the above Vandehei article. How do the club members imagine the bill will ever be paid, even to them?

Note to the Punditocracy: YOU LOST. Libby’s filing clearly shows the hand of conspiracy at work. Pack up the ball and go home before you cause yourselves permanent damage. Unlike your media, the internet has a memory and the more you try to cover-up the more damning will be your condemnation when the house implodes. You can’t hide your mistakes behind a wall of denial and delusion any longer. The experiment in Monarchy has failed. By continuing beyond this point, you are forcing the collective, as digby coined it “to stake you once and for all”.
