George Orwell wrote an essay on Politics and the English Language in May 1945 which is still referenced today.

In the essay, he uses the confusion between “toe the line” and “tow the line” to illustrate the problem of dying metaphors:

“Some metaphors now current have been twisted out of their original meaning without those who use them even being aware of the fact. For example, toe the line is sometimes written as tow the line.”

Orwell’s advice is to use neither.

No, Skippy, it’s “do, a dee-ah, a female dee-ah” … and it’s dee-ah because the terminal ‘r’ sound is pretty ugly when sung.

The song is based on the solfege syllables, “do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti” for the notes in the major scale.

Please don’t get me started on fixed vs. moveable do … I changed my major from music to biology when I realized I was in the custody of solfege nazis.

Toe the line!

Think of what the meaning of the phrase is. And then explain to me what it has to do with people pulling on a rope.

Geez!

Google votes: “toe the line” 496,000 hits.
“tow the line” 143,000 hits,
the top hits in the second case are people trying to correct misusage.

(Tugboats tow lines.)

The OED lists the erroneous “tow” in the top ten misused
homonyms. Number one is diffuse/defuse.
Tow/toe comes between reign/rein and pour/pore.

When Joe ran as VP, I was just a skim politics on the TV Dem. But I was embarrassed at how boring Joe was.

Now he is a force?

Kerry was also a disappointment to budding political awareness. A deep one.
I wanted Kerry to tell the American People the truth (as he knew it) about the Iraqi (occupation? war?0
Kerry didn’t get it. He had a muddied THE message that left me behind. Thanks to FDL–BRADBLOG–C&L–AMERICAblog-

minor, very technical detail - it’s called “toe†the line, not “tow†the line.

i thought it was “doe a deer.”

I am not sure what I think of the CT Post column. I think there is alot more contradiction in Joe’s record that could’ve been highlighted. Like NARAL ratings & non-filibuster support, etc. Maybe I’m missing something cause I read it quickly and it has an ironic tone.
Kirby, I’m glad some young students derived some enjoyment from the visit. Bush’s visit has stunt written all over it. Saw part of speech on tv and some jerk comments Bush made about Shays. Terrible, time, insensitivity to the plight of many Bridgport citizens (no doubt in regards to healthcare.).
On who gets abused & doesn’t become an abuser. I think the secret is wanting control. Many want control over their own lives. Others want to control others, sometimes to the point of annhilating personality, etc.. My theory. (OK. I’ve been reading Reading Lolita in Tehran as well. Author & her students point out how HH bears similiarity to totalitarian, or authoritarian Fundie regime.& Nabakov wanted to draw comparisons apparentl, maybe to Soviets)
Time to download new browser. Maybe Firefox?
