Update: Please go hit the recommend button if you’re a Kossack and help Mike out
There’s a very interesting diary riding up at the top of the Kos diaries today about the overt racism of right-wing radio. The GOP attempt to divert attention from the fall of their criminal kingpin, Tom Delay, and onto Cynthia McKinney by calling her "ghetto slut," "ghetto trash" and "welfare drag queen" betray the core of racism that the right wing uses to rally their troops to arms.
It is in this vein that we’ve been running our week-long series at FDL late nite on the bigotsphere. We’re also asking people for help in calling Washington DC radio to alert the DC community of the Washington Post’s willingness to hire a Red State racist like Ben Domenech (it was not his racism they found problematic — Jim Brady called the hoopla over that "silly"). Hugh Hewitt may call the lefty blogosphere a "fever swamp" but he does so in denial of the bigotry both soft and hard constantly exploited by the right as a means to a political end. The fact that this "social conservative" (*cough*) position is making its way into corporate media is unacceptable.
Mike Stark is over at Kos recruiting folks to help him call into DC radio and carry this message out of the blogosphere and into the DC community. If you’re a Kossack please go hit the "recommend" button and give him a hand, there may even be a "CallingAllWingnuts" mug in it for you.

Fitz me! Tom is out! What do I tell my child?
Feingold rocks on!
The disconnect for me is that McKinney is gonna be criminally charged, while Cheney, who shot a guy in the face, walks free.
Check out shows like Scarborough. McKinney’s main offense is apparently her hair.
ooh– Randi Rhodes on Lou Dobbie.
Does anyone have a suggestion about the most time-efficient way to go back through prior comments and collect recommendations for books, websites, or organize links within the posts?
Not to distract from this important topic but I just wanted to note a C-Span ’show-down’ that just took place/is taking place in the Senate with regard to the Immigration Bill.
The Republicans are screaming bloody murder (and of course, “national security”), because for ONCE the Democrats have the upper hand on a bipartisan bill, and are refusing to allow amendments to be offered that would gut it, in effect. You should hear how Specter and Domenici wail about having the same tactics applied to them, that the Democrats have been subjected to for years from the Republicans at the behest of the White House and Karl Rove. “A taste of their own medicine” is how Harry Reid put it (MUCH too mildly for my taste, actually).
All Cornyn and Frist want to do is to try to score political points, forget negotiating with the Democrats. Specter is caught in the middle trying to save his committee’s bill. If nothing is worked out, the Democrats appear ready to push for a cloture vote, and thus a final vote on the bill as is, without amendment, by Friday.
It is simply LOVELY to behold the Republicans for once being on the receiving end of their own strong-arm tactics — and even lovelier to see their arrogant, entitled, privileged, elitist opinions of themselves try to deal with such “shocking” use of the rules of the Senate. Stick it to them, Harry — match anger with anger, rhetorical bomb with rhetorical bomb. THIS is “opposition” — and when the Republicans stop calling you their “friend” too, then you’ll know you are finally making a difference, on behalf of the American people.
Wolfie says he’s gonna ask Delay “the tough questions”… any predicitions?
jayt– he will ask bugman how he met his wife Christine (or is it Chrysalis) and when he knew he was in love.
I don’t really see the value of a rational critique of these gasbags racist or not. It’s doubtful that their loyal listeners would understand the critique even if they possessed the ability to hear it. I guess it might inform a moderate (potential swing) voter but would a moderate ever start listening to that crap anyway?
OMG! What a beautiful bakelite-cabinet clock radio from the ’30’s-40’s in luscious caramel! And with the price tag discretly displayed. When I hover my mouse over the pic, the gif file name says Radio Fest 2003, apparently in reference to the Radio Festival which took place in 2003. Bakelite is a beautiful medium, rare in these days of cheap plastic, and beautiful bakelite radios rarer still. I’m not a collector, hate the collecting mentality. I just love to look at these radios, though I would not mind having just one of them. This one will do nicely. Who cares if it works or not.
So much more pleasant than looking a DeLay’s fat, flushed, and smug mug. Thanks FDL.
Breaking one of my rules – again – and blgging from work. OK, it is lunch.
I was driving around earlier in lunch hour, and listened to Shawn Hannity interviewing DeLay, or, judging from Hannity, St. Tom. Talk about dishing it out without being able to take it! Both those guys. What wusses. Anyway, as soon as the bugman left the interview, Hannity went back to all-Cynthia-all-the-time. I tuned to whoever the current nut is filling in for O’Reilly, and the same thing – all-McKinney, all racist or sexist (or both) code words.
Local Anchorage right wing nuts were onto her on the drive in today, even though it is election day in Anchorage – mayor, ballot props.

Edward Teller — I think Mike Stark actually got on that Hannity show, he got to call Tom DeLay a “cockroach.”
How do you like this quote from Powerline via ThinkProgress?

Now that I’ve read Pach I changed my mind. He’ll be “tough” on Tom by asking him the same question he asks Dean.
“Why aren’t the Dems getting any traction?”
Ho! Blogger down for 1/2 hour for “maintenance” during prime time. For all the hassle we’ve had changing over, color me relieved.

By the way, the Powertools quote is by John Hinderaker. perhaps the most delusional attorney in the United States who isn’t named John Yoo.
And of course, Howie Kurtz and Wolf Blitzer etc. have been ignoring the overflow of bigoted rants from the big right wing blogs, including all those that make up Hewitt’s very own Pajamas Media. If you go over to Little Green Footballs, Captains Quarters and others you will be treated to a veritable feast of racists, sexist spewage on a daily basis. I think Mckinney is a bit of a nutter, but she certainly doesn’t deserve to be called a “ghetto slut” and for the media to ignore how the big names in the right wing blogosphere can’t seem to talk about her without being overtly racist, it begs the question- why do Howie, Jim Brady and others push the talking point that the left wing blogosphere is a “fever swamp” of hateful lunacy (without being able to point to examples) while ignoring that very thing on the right (where a whole list of examples exist for all to see)?
test…?
Zennurse referred above/below to being sorry that the rubberstamp idea didn’t work out. I read earlier from Christy that today was the day. Did I miss somethimg?
WOLF AND DELAY: told you he brought up his wifey. everybody was doing things on their own, and they may have done something wrong (they pleaded guilty, buttbug) and they do not reflect anything on me. i’m not stoopic.
DeLay did a lot of blinking, more than his usual high rate, when Leslie asked about his wife.
Now Delay says he went to England to help Margaret Thatcher with her conservative movement.

I’m glad I caught you here in the latest thread — while trying (in vain) to catch up on ALL the comments I’ve missed, I happened to come across your nickname for the Bugman: “The Ex-Terminator”
Let me salute you, OJ! That expression is a thing of beauty. Just perfect. Laugh-out-loud perfect.

Regarding antique radios, I too am not a collector, even though I love ‘em dearly. Nonetheless, I have the great good luck to have two of them: a Bakelite Telefunken desktop model ($5 sold to me by a fellow waitress during college), and my pride and joy (handed down through the family from my grandma) a 1932 Sears Silvertone — that one’s a full, large, standing model with a round dial labeling cities of the world for shortwave reception, with a lighted “green eye” in the center of the dial.
Thanks to the handy skills of Mr. K8, BOTH models are working. The Silvertone has pride of place in the living room.
You’ve got good taste in radios, says I.
Jane — Thanks for the lovely picture!
Anyone — Can anyone (with graphics software) read the price on the radio’s pricetag?
gee, I was wrong – he’s Saint Thomas the Golfer.
How did the Wolfie interview go?
Still going. He’s got his yellow smiley mugshot face on.
Delay on CNN — identifies himself with “conservatives” and “conservatism.” That will make conservatives shudder.
He says his decision was independent of recent indictment of former aides, and there’s nothing to connect him to Abramoff, and “I am not a target.” His own lawyers have exonerated him. Now there’s an endorsement.
His golf trips were to consult with Thatcher to build a conservative movement — appears Thatcher couldn’t succeed without him.
I made no mistakes. Charges are just politics; has never done anything for personal gain. What a nice man.
Wolfie: So why are the Republican’s relieved to see you go? “We were effective in changing the culture of this town.” That quote will be the Dem’s campaign fodder if Tom is indicted.
maybe we should honor him by teeing up his balls..
Delay– ok– i never did anything wrong, i’m being played as a straw man, i have one thing i do for myself and that is to play golf. i did nothing wrong– my peeps have betrayed me. Ignore the premise. gasp and gag.
Vicki –
Hey, there! Haven’t been to Eschaton in a while, been hanging out here instead, but I miss you from the “old days” at the A-Man’s place.
How’ve you been? Hope all is well with you.
All part of the War on Christians, that beleagured minority cohort.
Dean on CNN, following DeLay: Delay’s leaving is good for the country; they’re all under inveestigation; Rove still there with security clearance; chief of staff under indictment in this culture of corruption. BAM.
Dean: we won’t do anything the Repubs charge; we will balance the budget; we will restore moral authority; have a health care system for all; no one supports “cut and run.” He skirts question whether Dems would raise taxes, even if defined as not extending Bush tax cuts; says there’s enough waste to cut.
Do Dems have policies for America? Yes but they have to say it all together.
scarecrow –
Thanks very much for the play-by-play! Even though he’s stepping down, I still can’t stomach his smarmy face and plummy voice, so I didn’t switch to CNN.
The answer to that last question — about Repubs being relieved now that he’s gone — is one hell of a non-sequitur, ain’t it? Don’t suppose Leslie actually followed up to point out he didn’t answer? That would be too much to hope for from the Wolfman.
Mrs. K8, #32
From you and you only, will I accept being called OJ!
And lucky you with two original bakelites, esp. with the green-eye. For those not familiar with old-fashioned radios, the green-eye was a tuning aid. The closer you got to the correct frequency for the station you are looking for, the bigger and brighter the eye dilated. Hi-tech for it’s time.
Thanks. :-)

At the “War on Christians” conference…
Some Attendees Feel ‘Used’ by the GOP
Political observers say so-called values voters were key to President Bush’s re-election victory. But at the convention, many of those same voters, their pastors and their leaders said they felt duped by Bush and the Republican Party.
“In the latest election, values voters were used,” Rick Scarborough told the convention audience.
Critics such as Scarborough say Republicans paid lip service to and then ignored their issues, such as the proposed constitutional amendment against gay marriage.
“If our president would speak more directly to that issue even when he was not running for election, we would get a lot more traction in the Senate and the House,” he said.
Embattled Rep. Tom DeLay, R-Texas, was received warmly by those at the conference. But even he seemed to distance himself from the Republican establishment. He praised the religious beliefs of Presidents Reagan and Roosevelt but did not even mention Bush, nor did he make a pitch for the Republican Party.
“In America, the greatest leaders aren’t the ones in the houses of Congress but in houses of God,” DeLay said…

it is pretty cool looking, but my first reaction in the context of the post was “cheesy”. As in the wingnut radio-hacks saying: better cheddar than redder.
orangejumpsuit –
Ah! Didn’t know that you dislike the moniker, OJ. Well, I suppose if I’d thought about it some, I could have foreseen it as a possibility (although OJ always means first and foremost “orange juice” to me, not a person with those initials). Question — do you have a fave nick-name for your handle? Orangejumpsuit is a mouthful, or should I say a “keyboard-ful”?
BTW, the Sears Silvertone is not a Bakelite, I should have been clearer. It’s lovely wood with a cherry stain (don’t know what the wood actually is, though). The pieces were fitted together to make swirls in the wood grain appear as symmetrical patterns. They don’t make things as carefully with an eye to beauty nowadays. Craftsmanship has gone out the window, for the most part.
Mrs. K8: Wolf was better than usual, for him. He was a lot tougher than Matthews, who also interviewed Delay tonight. That was nothing but slow pitch softballs; a love fest. Ya never know with Chris. Still, Delay said the same spiel on both shows: I’m completely innocent, guilt by association, a few staff people betrayed me. Dem politics, etc. But he then backed down when Matthews asked whether he was saying Dems are inherently less moral than Repubs. No. “I’m compelled to love them.” Oh, Jesus. One of the few times I actually hope there’s a god and that she’s just. Makes ya hope for the end times, just to watch!
Either Delay is the victim of a perfect storm of misleading direct and circumstantial evidence that suggests incorrectly he’s an unprincipled scoundrel but he’s actually a great guy (his claim), or he is the biggest liar in a Party full of liars. In the latter case, tonight’s videos will be reshown over and over in the fall, after the guy is indicted.
CNN McCafferty selects letters to read and they almost universally debunk the claim that the news media are misreporting the Iraq war. Consensus view: blaming the media is bunk.
He praised the religious beliefs of Presidents Reagan and Roosevelt but did not even mention Bush, nor did he make a pitch for the Republican Party.

Roosevelt? DeLay mentioned Roosevelt? Which one? Had to be TR, ’cause everyone knows FDR was a commie, and hence a godless atheist. /snark off
Sorry to say I don’t know when that Christians In the Lion’s Den event took place. (I’m sure it must have turned up here at FDL in a prominent spot, but I missed it) –Do you know when it was?
Breaking news — Olberman will be covering “Snakes on a Plane!”
Price? Hard to tell, but in the top right of the tag it looks like $22.75, although I may be hallucinating the decimal point.

While growing up I never thought much of the idea of “eternal damnation” — but in recent years, the current administration and folks like the Bugman have caused me to revisit my feelings on the matter. ;-)
Mrs. K6– Bugman et al will be on the gerbil/ hamster/ mouse and other rodent’s wheel riding all around the circles of hell. (apologies to all rodents!)
primordial –
Thanks for the take on the pricetag. That sure would be a TERRIFIC price! I’d spring for it.
dang, Mrs. K8– did not mean to subtract 2 from you. OMG! So sorry.
KO on Countdown has a pic/graph showing six people around Delay and their close connection to Delay; they’re all indicted. Very effective. Surprised that Shuster didn’t do that for Matthews, but he seemed to be pulling his punches in his pre-interview summary.
angie –
LOL!!! That’s much better than K9, in any event. :-) I like the idea of the hamster wheel, too. I can just picture Tommy running at a furious pace…
I truly believe that rift in the right can be closed. They’ve asked Ted Stevens and Tom Delay to form a task force, together they can Bridge the Golf.
angie– you owe a response to Mrs. K2
Feingold!! The Man for All Seasons
Why are the comments for Olbermann closed… that was weird. Very happy about DeLay…waiting to hear more on the Rove indictment everyone has been hinting about.
Gonna try to find the Censure thread. Only skimmed it but you have to be quick around here if the april 3 Keith thread has already been closed. Fine Gold’s courage will be remembered for more than a week!!
Really am so sorry Mrs. K8– that’s what one gets for keyboarding in candlelight. My apologies. omg.
K9 was actually a wonderful character on the British sci-fi spoof, Dr. Who, 25 years ago. He was a robotic dog with great powers, insight and dry sense of humor, and help Dr. Who save the universe on more than one occasion. We owe a lot to K9. One of my favorite characters. When my son was a small child, he was allowed to stay up till midnight on Saturdays to watch Dr. Who with Dad. Sigh.
I can just picture Tommy running at a furious pace…

angie –
Please, please do NOT apologize. You made me laugh out loud! There’s too little of that (laughter) these days. Why would I take offense at a typo? I just meant, the typo could have been worse…you could have called me Mrs. K9. Although now that I think of it, what’s wrong with that? In this household, we’re dog lovers for sure.
Online-by-candlelight? That sounds romantic! [Hope that’s by choice and not because a storm knocked out your electric.]

When I picked my screen name I was visualizing Scooter in his prison garb. It seems to be an appropriate metaphor for the political corruption engulfing us. Maybe it was also an subconscious Kafkaesqe acknowledgement that we are all somehow unindicted prisoners of the milieu. (Pach?)
However, “orange” is fine as a shortcut.
Your Sears radio sounds like a wooden cabinet with inlays of “burl” woodgrain.
They’ve asked Ted Stevens and Tom Delay to form a task force, together they can Bridge the Golf.

“Burl”! Thank you. I was searching for that word, and couldn’t come up with it. A “senior moment,” I fear.
Pachacutec @ 4:52 pm (#48) Damn, that’s scary. That there are millions of people like that woman around the country is simply mind boggling.
Reminds me of a guy I saw on Charlie Rose last night named Daniel Dennett. He’s a cognitive scientist from Tufts University, and, of course, was on the program to flog his latest book Breaking the Spell : Religion as a Natural Phenomenon. He described religion as a great excuse for people to turn off their minds when they’re trying to figure out what’s right. For these folks, if you want to know what the truth is, just look in the holy book, or ask someone who has. This woman is a classic example of the phenomenon.
#70 Punaise, Est-ce-qu’on va parler ce soir en francais? Pouvez-vous “punner” en francais?
Punaise,
I don’t mean to be nosy but, could you patronize my lack of sophistication and tell me what Punaise means in english? just curious.
angie — you were taught well. I was just teasing, as Mrs. K8 knows that on one of my first comments on FDL, I called the lady Mrs. Kate!! Didn’t notice and couldn’t figure out why everyone shunned me for days. Tough crowd!
Like the idea of a Hamsher Wheel, an infinite loop that Repubs must tread for an eternity.
I thought that pun in #70 was kinda KK
Anna –
I heard that Buchanan spew. “A long grey line of David Souters” indeed. Ya mean, people who still honor civil liberties? Yikes. Can’t have that!
Buchanan makes me ill.
I think I know you Mrs.K8 and knew you would not take offense, but I felt badly. Sort of like when I took off on Redd’s use of the word ‘droos’ one day and could have hurt our ‘Dru’. Anyhow, no power outage here and even if there was, I am fired up with glee! Cheers to all.
Hamsher wheel– poifect! Thanks, scarecrow for your kind words.
Ditto Mrs K8. He has made my skin crawl since the days that he ran for president. Interestingly he is against the war though. Odd one he is.
Busted: the definition of punaise that I use is “thumbtack” although others have pointed out that “pushpin” is more precise. Another definition is “bedbug” but I find that somewhat less appealing.
op99: the puns I make in French at home get very little traction – tough audience. I’d be loathe to inflict that kind of pain around here…I also try to limit the foreign language comments in general.

Wow. Thanks for the radio expertise!
I think it’s a cute name.
MsAnnaNOLA — re Repub scare tactics: I have to wonder whether claiming that if the Dems regain power, they will go after Bush isn’t a two edged sword, with the sharper side hurting the Repubs. The Dems are basically running against the Bush regime — a referendum on his Presidency. If they’re right, then the logical outcome of victory is they would go after Bush. So if the Repubs are playing the same theme, it just reenforces the Dems’s campaign slogan. As TeddySanFran says, “Had enough?” The threat is implicit for Dems and explicit for Repubs, but it’s the same message. I like our hand; now if they’ll only play it.

OK, that’s all I have for now. ;-)
scarecrow @ 5:16 pm — K9 was a good foil for the Doctor, and he’d always warn someone before opening fire on him. Always wondered how he managed to climb stairs, though.
Sadly, his design was a bit too ambitious for the ’70s. After he broke down and no one knew how to repair him, they dropped him from the show along with Sarah Jane.
“moi” is almost the sound they make when exchanging cheek kiss greetings – two, three, sometimes four in a row, depending on the region.

It was always funny having to explain to English boyfriends that at my family gatherings, they’d have to expect two cheek kisses instead of one.
I’m listening to Pat Buchanan on Olberman, who was kind enough to offer the dems advice, to the effect that if they try to run against Delay this fall, that will be so, like, 6 months ago. Hahahahaha, we just have to put up a photo of an R incument next to Delay’s mug shot and say – “Joe Incumbent — he voted for a felon as majority leader.”

How true. I remember a thread some time ago where someone (so sorry, can’t remember who) made a wise observation to the effect that some folks see good and evil as a difference between people, and for others it was line through the middle of the heart. Thanks to the person who brought that thought forward!
How do the Danes pronounce WC which is on the doors of their public toilets? Vee- Cee. v’s and w’s very or wery difficult and do not get me started on cucumber or refrigerator. The American language– not so easy for others. Proper English, not so difficult. Speaking of one or two cheek kisses, some in the world do 3 or 4.
Busted – I’ll give you a 4 for ef-four-t. you need the context – “toi” is the familiar (casual) form of the second person singular rather than “vous” which is formal, and is the default for addressing someone you don’t know.
the actual translation is: and you? (if I may presume a certain familiarity)
Punaise, Je pars a Paris ce vendredi en vacances; j’etudie follement. J’attende avec impatience les manifestations – quel moment mal choisi!

“While I don’t have a specific shift,” CHARLES says, “I will find one if he accepts. I am unable to discuss specifics of salary but with endorsements he’ll make six figures easily. On a station with RUSH (LIMBAUGH), (SEAN) HANNITY and (MICHAEL) SAVAGE, ‘THE HAMMER’ would fit perfectly.
“Innocent, guilty, I don’t judge and I know it will all work out but I think he has all the tools to be a good local host,” CHARLES says of the embattled former House Majority Leader.”

Calling the talk shows and telephoning the stations’ program directors don’t really do a whole lot. Complaining to the advertisers would probably be more effective.
The Daily Show Tuesday night used Cynthia McKinney as an equivalent of DeLay for the first ten minutes of the show. It wasn’t as racist as the winger response, but every bit as much false-equivalent “even-handedness”. Sickening and — more of a crime considering the venue — not very funny.
