Think Progress caught a Delay quote that I wanted to highlight, because it is so emblematic of DeLay in general: it’s his constant need to go for the big brag. Hyperbole, thy name is Tom. (And note that Time Magazine via Mike Allen has had this story since Monday, but had to hang onto it for a bit to secure the interview with the DeLays. How much would that have hurt as a reporter? Yowie.)
First of all, DeLay’s constant use of religion to cover his smarmy trail is disgusting. It has the oozy Jimmy Swaggart caught with a prostitute feel to it.
How much credit do you get for repenting if you only do it once you’ve been caught red-handed and threatened with prosecution? It’s fairly clear to me tha Allen was asked to bring up some of the religion angle in the interview with DeLay — there are some fairly straightforward questions about that. It seems to me that perhaps Tom DeLay is trying to butter up potential evangelical speaking engagements for his post-Congressional speaker’s fee career. (Have to pay your defense attorneys somehow…)
It’s really an extraordinary read. Mike Allen of Time got a great interview. There’s quite a bit about Texas election issues and DeLay stepping aside to make room for the appointment or election via a special election of a GOP successor for the seat — and a whole lot of discussion with Tom and Christine DeLay about little details between them in terms of politics. And then there’s this:
TIME: Do you think you did anything that made you more of a target for your critics? Do you think you made it easier for the opponents to —
DeLay: No. The opponents HATE what we do—what we have done in the last 11 years in the majority. We have built the largest political coalition of my adult lifetime. They hate that. We have been effective for 11 years going now, doing some pretty amazing things. They hate that. The reason we’ve been effective is we’ve tried to change the culture of Washington, D.C. And do it legally and ethically. The Democrats hate the fact that their culture of K Street has been changed from a totally dominated Democrat K Street [lobbying community]to a totally dominated Republican K Street. Nothing illegal about that at all. And we built that. When we took over in 1995, the K Street contributions to elections was 70/30—70 percent Democrat, 30 percent Republican. Today it’s 60/40—60 percent Republican and 40 percent Republican. That’s a change in culture. Democrats and the left hate that, and they have worked very hard to destroy it. (emphasis mine)
And the big brag comes into play. It’s that need to be the big fish, to play the tough guy, and for everyone to know about it that gets Tom DeLay in trouble. That current culture of corruption on KStreet was built by Republicans, with Tom DeLay’s leadership — that he admits it flat out, even brags about it, shows how far gone he already is.
When you live inside a corruption bubble, day in and day out, everything you do seems normal to you — no matter how illegal, how immoral or how unethical it may seem to everyday people. The fact that the Republican Party leadership and the rank and file in Congress and in the White House have simply rubber stamped this corrupt activity from the time they walked into the Congressional leadership and into the White House is emblamatic of the entire problem.
Corruption is what they do. And why they ought to be voted out of office for the good of the nation. Our government works best when we have checks and balances. Absolute power is a severely corrupting influence — go back and read DeLay’s brag about pressuring judges to vote his way or else, and tell me that power corruption in the Republican hierarchy doesn’t threaten our Constitutional structure.
When you have government divided among the political parties, you have incentive on both sides to watch the other — and thus, sunshine is invited into all the nooks and crannies. It’s not a perfect governmental system, but it does work remarkably well in terms of oversight. Here’s to a whole lot more sunshine.
You want accountability? Vote for a Democrat in 2006.
Oh, and cbl — you win the song prize of the day for this one. Mwahaha. And Jeralyn has more thoughts on the "family squeeze."

That’s “emblematic.”
lol — Thanks, Albatross. My typing is horrid this morning. Clearly need more coffee…will fix it.
Today it’s 60/40—60 percent Republican and 40 percent Republican.
Wow! That’s either 100 percent Republican, or a typo.
EPU’d:
I have a diary up on what our messaging should be, post DeLay news:
http://www.dailykos.com/storyo…..14153/0025
MarkB — I cut and pasted directly from the article on that quote, to be certain I got that exact bit. I’m not certain if it was intended or a typo — I tend to think it was probably a typo, but just in case, I wanted the whole of the language. *g*
Oh, and just FYI everyone, I’ll hopefully have some Rubber Stamp Republican Congress stamp news this afternoon, if all of our ducks stay in their respective rows. :)
Thanks, Christy. Glad to be back. love the new format. BTW.
Well, it’s obviously a perfect storm for the Bugman to get out right now–conversion of his campaign coffers to his defense fund (WaPo); special appointment or election to protect his seat in TX.(TIME); and, you’re probably right about an EVENTUAL deal to keep the wife and kid off the indictment (but I still think the Federal prosecution of DeLay just isn’t ripe for a deal yet. Too much new information from Rudy et al for them to ingest first. And,don’t forget, they’re going ot want to tie any deal to his assets to get some heavy forfeitures too, and that means a lot of work to track, trace and ID all that Bugman Bling). My bet is they let him twist in the wind some more, spending his defense fund dollars (Wow, I wonder if there’s a theory of forfeiture which could attach to that fund? Wouldn’t the wingers howl about having their political contributions forfeited as proceeds of a criminal enterpise?! Let’s research that!)
har de har har, redd. friends indeed. you’re totally right about the bubble, but i’m an angry radical so i have to add that far, far too many “democrats” live there too, even if they get their take in a slightly less slimy way. delay could never have come to power if more dems had been doing their jobs back when they still had some power. listening to the shrums of the world brought us to this.
Hope everyone is enjoying our sense of schadenfreude today. Certainly if there was a day to rejoice in the misfortunes of others, today would be it. Here’s to many more!
(Have to pay your defense attorneys somehow…)
That’s part of the point. According to C-SPAN this morning, Delay now gets to transfer all the campaign money he’s raised into his legal defense fund, about a million dollars worth. He’d have much less if he carried his campaign to the end, which was expected to be one of the most costly House races in history.
One last, final act of graft before riding off into the sunset. And a perfectly legal one too. It’s so… him.
btw: 2 elections in TX-22 this year will soak up beaucoup bucks from both parties…
According to the WaPo article, DeLay can use his war chest to pay his legal bills. Strictly on the basis of common sense, reason, and fair play, this stinks, but it is apparently the law. The guys who wrote up and passed this election finance law clearly knew what they were doing. After all, as a politician you never know when you are going to need an expensive lawyer. In any case, there is not much left in his fund, as contributions have dropped off sharply of late. Probably less than a mil left to play with. OTOH, he will be speaking to adoring RW groups for $25-50k a pop.
“DeLay also is entitled under federal election rules to convert any or all of the remaining funds from his reelection campaign to his legal expenses, whether or not he resigns, is indicted or loses the election. Election lawyers say one advantage of bowing out of the election now is that the campaign cash can be converted to pay legal bills immediately, instead of being drained in the course of a bid to stay in office.” http://tinyurl.com/khngw
http://tinyurl.com/khngw
And isn’t it funny that the two people DeLay gave the interview to were Mike ( I’m really a Rethug but don’t tell anyone) Allen and, of course, Tweety.
Tweety is having his interview tonight. Wopnder if it’ll be as “hard hitting” as the one he did a few weeks ago. You remember, the one where he practically came all over DeLay’s leg?
Here’s to duckeis in a row(fingers crossed.)
Prevpost:
Thanks for highlighting the “women and children” first aspect of the Bugman’s shuffle, ReddHedd. My recollection (sorry no time this a.m. to link….) is that Tony Rudy’s deal spared his wife time as well as charges, so that the little Rudys are spared having both parents “away at camp.”
Common tactic on the prosecution side, yes. What’s revealing is the real family values on display: greed and avarice. None of them could resist the opportunity to put family members in jeopardy, given the richness of the spoils.
The marriage of lobbying money with either party is repellant in many ways. But, as Delay notes, the Republican Party rode in on a white horse to beat back the “Corruption”. Instead Delay freely admits that he merely supplanted Democrat influence with Republican influence.
A stunningly arrogant admission from a stunningly arrogant man.
-GSD
Tweety learned from Monica: fellatio brings you access …
For a “born again” sorta guy, DeLay sure uses the word “hate” a lot. Then again, it’s a feeling he apparently has most of the time, so he knows it well.
OT, I saw a link to backbone campaign in a comment on Democratic Underground where you can download a backbone postcard or notecard to send to deserving folks (congresscritters?)–just a thought:

March was supposed to come in like a lion and go out like a lamb.
Instead, he gets marched out for lying; he’s soon on the lam.

I love the new numbered comments. So much easier to slime DeLay.
Well, they certainly have changed the culture of Washington in the time they’ve been in power: they taught America to care about blowjobs and perjury. Now, on the other hand, we seem not to care so much inside the Beltway about the law-breaking….
April showers bring May flowers.
April skewers bring one Bug fewer.
I’m in the through-the-looking-glass position of wishing that Delay had stuck it out, in the same way we should be grateful for Katherine Harris’ tenacity. There’s nothing like the spectacular flame-out of an arrogant bitter-ender. Delay’s implosion would have been entertainment of the highest order. Now we just get to watch him skulk away, having bought a few more weeks before the perp walk. Dang.
Not that I’m complaining!
Redd says: “Corruption is what they do. And why they ought to be voted out of office for the good of the nation.”
Agreed, but what do you do when they have also corrupted the election process itself? To these folks there is nothing sacred except their self regard.
The pic of DeLay and Bush: At least they are not holding hands…but then, DeLay is not an Oil Sheik.
“When we took over in 1995, the K Street contributions to elections was 70/30—70 percent Democrat, 30 percent Republican. Today it’s 60/40—60 percent Republican and 40 percent Republican [sic]. That’s a change in culture.”
Or…perhaps it just naturally reflects the balance in congress. Jeesh! What a loser!
This delAypril shower is golden.
Think Progress is reporting that on Tony Snow this morning, DeLay talked about the Texas legislature deposing Ronnie Earle.
From think progress:
“SNOW: Okay, so at this point, you know — are you willing to let bygones be bygones?
DELAY: Absolutely not. Texas should not allow a district attorney from Travis County have this kind of power. And they can take his power away from him because there was the Texas legislature that gave him this power. And I think that will happen in the next session of the Texas legislature.
SNOW: Oh, really?
DELAY: Yes.”
Repent? Not bloody likely.
It’s no typo. Somebody needs to send that quote to Li’l Debbie. Maybe a few somebodies…..
April is the cruelest month.
As for Delay, he is going to become some sort of Falwellian type of Republican. He talked about the massive support he recieved at the “Christians in the Bunker” meeting last week.
It was really sort of creepy…very fundamentalist type of talk…under siege and attack because of their faith. Look it up and read the coverage. The far right Christians are feeling beleagured because they are. The party is now afriad on much of what the Theocrats want…dead gays….executed abortion doctors…stoned adulterers…..Not a winning coaltion agenda.
I also think that may have caused some of the stalwarts who are no so enamored with the evangelical wing of the party to say….Time to leave Tommy Boy.
He and his relationship with Casino Jack will be the gift that keeps on giving. Don’t forget that some of Casino Jack’s bargaining power might have been frittered away..seeing one of the mobsters in the Gus Boulis/Sun Cruise Casino case was also an FBI informant. The informant could say Kidan AND Jack wanted to get Gus Boulis out of the way.
Poor Tom is still going to be around for a few more months….sputtering and whining and becoming less and less sympathetic as time marches on….He is reaching his Joe McCarthy moment folks.

Oh, AnonZ — I see Barbara Comstock has been busy getting her minions on board the message machine again. SIGH So sad when Repubicans have so little respect for the rule of law when its applied to their side of things.
Orangejumpsuit #12. It is an interesting question regarding the use of that money if, and it is a big if, it came from illegal sources. It might be legal to use legitimate contributions, but if the money was someohow illegal, most any lawyer is not giong to want to touch it b/c the feds can go after it under forfeiture laws (assuming they apply). I don’t know if the money is dirty, but I don’t think it is a bad way to bet. So any lawyer would be taking a big risk. And the feds really do like to go after lawyer fees paid with dirty money.
i’m so confused…that nice rick santorum told me theres no such thing as a K STREET PROJECT!!!!
And the worst — a comment just played on the news “If I resign, then the seat is guaranteed to my successor and will stay in Republican hands.”
Oh, really?

Good Gravy! AnonZ, you scared me for a minute. It’s just a doofy parody.

AnonZ—A sad indication of my distrust, and disgust, in this administration is that while clicking your link I was worried it might actually be true.
Tom DeLay’s announcement is just the beginning of the reckoning of the Republican culture of corruption that has gripped Washington for too long. From DeLay, to Scooter Libby, to Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, to Duke Cunningham, to Bob Ney, to David Safavian–the list goes on and on. Make no mistake, this Fall the American people are going to have a clear choice between Democrats who offer a bold vision based on honest leadership and real security, and Republicans who can only offer more of the same Republican culture of corruption and incompetence
Oops- that last was from the DNC- forgot to attribute it.

Investigators are looking into Buckham’s connection to DeLay’s wife, Christine. She was paid $115,000 over three years by Alexander Strategy Group, a lobbying firm run by Buckham and Rudy, to identify the favorite charities of members of Congress.
Tasty.
Case Treat Project
I have always been dumbfounded by the money paid to Delay’s wife to determine the favorite charities of congresscritters- she got about %10,000 per phone call I guess. It is SO outrageous- it’s as if someone on Delay’s staff was trying to see just how stupid people really are- guess he found out.
A mention in Ms. Christy’s post and Buggy headin’ out ?!?!?. . . my, my, my, I’m goin’ out and buyin’ a lottery ticket
thanks and don’t forget to sing y’all !!
that $3K/month for 3 years to ascertain the favorite charity of Congresscritters is so damn transparent. Politicians are not exactly shy about naming favorite charities – an industrious intern could do it in a week.
If the christian right every wakes up and begins to realize that they are being taken for a ride- the purpose of which is to enrich the corrupt and steal from the mouths of the poor- then the gooper party is dead- dead for ever! Of course that would require ANALYTIC THINKING.
When I think about DC, I keep thinking about this.
…and on another note.
Texas is glad to be rid of Delay, but I wonder what folks in Virgina have to say about their new neighbor. Hrm…maybe a bunch of them would like to get together and say hello?
“…tell me that power corruption in the Republican hierarchy doesn’t threaten our Constitutional structure.”
This is where Dems need to focus their message. Many have said the Dems need to come up with a “united front” clearly laying out solutions to Iraq, the Katrina mess, energy policy, etc. This is ludicrous. As soon as you define a position, you have to defend it.
No.
Make the Repubs defend their corrupt relationship with K street lobbyists, make them defend their threats against the judiciary, make them defend the lies about the Iraqui invasion. Pound them over and over on how they “broke” our nation’s system of checks and balances, of oversight, of accountability.
The Dems message needs to be accountability through checks and balances. Their position should be, simply, a return to honest government. They should say opposing viewpoints and dissent are good things that make for stronger, not weaker government. They need to pledge transparency in policymaking.
Polls consistently show that the majority of the public thinks the country is on the wrong track. Dems don’t neccessarily need to say, “we have the answers.” But they can say,”vote out the Republican majority that’s taking this country in the wrong direction, and we’ll put it back on track.”
Politics is great theater and in this case, it’s positively Shakespearean. The man who dreamed of a perpetual Republican majority (and, for a while anyway, actually made it happen) is, through his own words and actions, dismantling all he’s done.
I’m sure that if Rove didn’t have his own problems, he’d be screaming about Delay right now, “We’re going to fuck him! We’re going to fuck him like he’s never been fucked before.”
Cynic that I am, I say blegh to protecting the family. If he had any regard for his family he would never have gotten them involved in the first place.
If they are sentient beings, his wife and daughter knew exactly what the deal was, and since they made a deal with the devil, I say let ‘em pay.
Everybody into the bed…
Delay is now threatening to have Ronnie Earle removed.
Nice to be able to just change, avoid or ignore laws like these Republicans do.
Also, Viva Spitzer!

Kirby, Isn’t Delay one of those with buddies/cronies and buddies/cronies who know buddies/cronies with stakes in Diebold. Eliminating electronic voting–which Texas has right(?)–will make the good Texan’s life easier, I should think. Close the corriders and the ratholes, so to speak.
Regarding Delay…
The one and only thing you have to respect about this otherwise totally despicable slugthug- is the set of brass balls he has continually and openly displayed in pursuit of his objectives.
If only we had players like that on our side.
Think about it….
The ladies probably didn’t know a thing about what Delay was doing. I’d be willing to bet neither of them even knew their name was associated with the PAC’s and charities.
It’s pretty stereotypical. The men lie, cheat, and steal to get the cash. As long as it keeps coming, the ladies quickly learn not to ask too many questions.
Agree with jayackroyd, Mrs. Howell needs to straighten Tom out, let him know that K Street is totally bipartisan.
60/40 Republicans on K Street? What a shrill liberal.
just did a quick calculation: Delay’s retirement pay from Congress is a little over $100,000/year plus subsidized BlueCross. Not too shabby!

Larry – Disagree. I don’t have to respect anything about the Bugman, and I don’t agree that we need a criminal on our “team,” who accomplished whatever he did “accomplish” illegally, to achieve our goals. Sorry, that argument makes no sense to me.
A couple of comments on the last thread that need some attention imho.

I truly enjoyed your “Yellow Streak of Texas” song sung to the “Yellow Rose of Texas.” If memory serves me correctly in old age, That was the song that was on the jukebox in the fight scene in the movie “Giant” wasn’t it?
I love the song, but your lyrics are soooooooo
good cbl. Glad that Redd recognized you on it.

You made some very good points in the last thread about being prepared for some last minute “dirty tricks” against the Democrats just before the election and how we should prepare a state-by state strategy on the way to replace Democrats caught up in the Culture of Corruption in the last days before the elections.
Not that Rove, Delay, and Company would ever play unfair when it comes to politics and keeping their majority.
Finally, just a thought for the community here.
Could you believe just one short year ago that all this good news would be happening for us?
OT-
Was the article about Bush looking at the legal issues to suspend presidential elections an April Fools joke or for real? The Republicans have crossed the line to such an extent that I can no longer tell the difference.
The “Hammer,’ gets nailed!! :D
Jeebus,
Sorry about the run on and on sentence in my post. Preview is my friend and I had better start using it.
Sounds like a good defense strategy!
“The judges need to be intimidated. They need to uphold the Constitution. (If they don’t behave) we’re going to go after them in a big way.”
-Tom Delay
I also detect in this the classic form of Republican projection. “We had to do this evil, corrupt thing (vote suppression, the K Street Project, whatever) because we’re sure the Democrats do it, and if we don’t fight back, they’ll win with those underhanded techniques.” Yet mysteriously, no evidence ever surfaces that the Democrats are doing it.
Everyone knows the K Street Project was a totally unprecedented protection racket; no party had every tried to dictate the party affiliation of the people the lobbying firms hired. But DeLay can’t stop pretending that the Democrats had something similar, knowing the rank and file GOP will believe it. One wonders if he’s even convinced himself it’s true by now.

CNN is touting Delay in the Situation Room at 7 p.m. How ’bout we give ol’ Wolfie a shout-out of suggested questions?
Funny how the liberal media regurgitates Delay’s reasons for quitting, without mention of Friday’s indictment of his helper.
In Saipan, where Levi’s are “Made In USA”, Tom Delay helped force abortions on Asian sweatshop workers – from Al Franken’s book “The Truth”.
Oooh, Redshift — I got a Froomkin hat tip? (Runing over to the WaPo to see…)
Sorry to hit and run once again but…
My heart soars if only because I’ve felt all along that the biggest threat to our consitution was primarily the overt and frightening threats to judiciary branch issued loudly and repeatedly by the Evil Bugman. (Agree that the corruption is of course a serious threat as well.)
Is Sandra Day as relieved as I am that this scumbag will be more or less divested of his power?
OT: And congrats to Jane and Christy on the Koufax win. Highly deserved!
Zergle: Texas is glad to be rid of Delay, but I wonder what folks in Virgina have to say about their new neighbor. Hrm…maybe a bunch of them would like to get together and say hello?
Heh, heh, heh… I was thinking the same thing.
ExcusemeExcuseme:
No question that Jane and Christy and FDL were instrumental in holding the MSM to the facts and the truth of the Abramoff mess. And I have no doubt that should the mud-slinging begin anew, FDL and other blogs will again focus their lasers on the truth. There is a commitment to defending and disseminating the truth that makes my heart swell with pride, and keeps me energized and hopeful.
Haven’t had a chance to read through all of this mornings comments but I’m sure the satisfaction and the snark has been top notch. Regarding Christy’s speculation in the last thread that the skeletons in the Dems closets may be in jeopardy of seeing the light of day, I want to weigh in on the side of “if they were dealing with the same corrupt dirtbags as Delay, Abramoff, et al….I want them out just as much as I want the Repugs out, if not more”.
Interesting watching the “Breaking News” story of Delay’s announcement on M$NBC last night with Chris Matthews live by phone. Apparently Matthews was one of the first people Delay called to give his scoop to…..makes you wonder just how cozy Matthews is to the Bugman?

I’ll bet Ol’ Ronnie is just shakin’ in his boots(with laughter).
I’m dubious about the family squeeze being Delay’s primary motivation. I think the RNC realized that the only way they have a chance at getting Rethug corruption off the table for 2006 was to offer up a major-league sacrifice.
So the Rethug talking point is going to be, “But Delay’s gone. We FIXED the corruption problem.” What interests me is whether Rahm Emmanuel and Chuck Schumer are dumb enough to think that Americans are dumb enough to buy that line of fertilizer…and will thus put out the word for Democratic candidates to pull their punches on the issue of Rethug corruption…and whether said candidates will be dumb enough to listen.
If they indict Rover anytime soon I’m going to have to break out the champagne….no question.
Yeah, we were debating last night whether to break out the champagne. We’ve got a really good bottle waiting for Rove, but that doesn’t mean we can’t open a different one for celebration-worthy events before that! (Found out a little too late on a work night, though. Maybe tonight.)
ccmask — oh man, you made me laugh out loud with that one. Bwahahahaha!
With Bush as with Delay — by strategy these guys keep grabbing until they fail. By that method, eventually they’re going to fail, but the amount of success they’ve had up till then is the way to judge them. By that standard they’ve both been depressingly successful. Maybe the nightmare is on the way to being over, but it’ll still take awhile for us to get back to where we started.
Arriana has a good time with this one on DeLay claiming to doing spiritual fasting before making his decision (while according to Arriana, looking rather bloated). Of course, he says he is going to spend the rest of his life doing God’s work.
Color me cynical but when politicians parade their (supposed) spirituality, I can’t help but smell at least a whiff of sulphur.

Larry, I don’t respect this about him. I agree with you completely that we need Dems with spine (instead of mealy-mouthed Biden and Holy Joe), but the key to Delay’s (and we hope the Republicans’) success and failure is that he is so single-minded, so sure he is right — and so are his supporters — that neither he nor the “Christians” see anything wrong with their methods becuase their objectives are so Holy. He was so successful in getting what he wanted, so remorseless (and still is), but this very lack of remorse (= blindness) was his own undoing. Let’s hope the new “Republican majority” is the same house of cards.
I want Democrats with balls, but I don’t want them to sweep the table so remorselessly. I’d prefer the longer way round.
(Sorry to nitpick, but I just can’t respect this about Delay.)
