Like the truly great scoundrel that he is, it seems Tom DeLay is set to make his next act the Christian Martyr. He’s been laying the planks for this for a while, and I for one couldn’t be happier.
As Digby says, not all the evangelicals are happy about embracing Hot Tub Tom as their new poster boy. With good reason. The God-baiters have been remarkably good at urging their snake handlers into political activism, but as each new headline breaks about DeLay’s corruption, how many of them are going to want to hold him up as a portrait of Christian martyrdom? How many will want to continue to defend him as one of their own? Not that there is any limit to the amount of corruption they will tolerate on the part of those who are willing to legislate hate, but still. After a while, claiming DeLay did nothing wrong and is merely the victim of Christian persecution is going to get a bit old. And humiliating.
It’s a very bad business card for the whole movement, one that could cause their legions to just stay home and wait for the rapture with the 700 Club, a tuna noodle casserole and a Barcalounger.
Who would be left for John McCain to embrace?

Hmm, does this mean that patriotism is the next to last refuge of a scoundrel?
One also is struck by the profligate use of the word “martyr” by extremists of all sorts these days.
In the previous thread, we’ve been discussing how much stealing is OK among the pious. No definitive answers yet, but some forms of involuntary “tithing” appear to be OK.
So he’s going to do the “there’s a war on Christianity” speech circuit and fan those flames, it looks like. The foolish will believe it, I’m sure. And there are lots of them.
Do they just forget all about personal responsibility and rule of law, and all that?
What is it with them?
Do you think that the so-called religious right is ever going to wise up to how the republican party has used them? In a battle between the corporate-sponsered oligarchs and the theocratic fascists the amoral machiavellians corporatists will win because they are so greedy.
Maybe McCain will embrace big labor?
Nope. “McCain booed during AFL-CIO speech”
Ya know, Tom asked himself, “What Would Jesus Do?” And the answer was, he would go off to Scotland to play golf on a lobbyist’s dime, then return the favor by twisting a few arms to get some favorable legislation passed. ‘Course He would; instead of throwing the moneychangers out of the temple, Jesus would be looking for his cut, which he could then pass on to the Apostles.
The question about co-opting Christianity is really starting to reach its zenith (nadir?). I have a number of very serious, Texas Baptist/Calvinist friends who are as religious right wingy judgmental as you like. But they also have a true belief in their religion, they are not hypocrites, and take seriously their responsibility to others — especially those less fortunate. They just do it with Jesus on their lips. I got to see two of my friends from Texas last week and they are really getting upset about “politicing our God” as they put it. I wanted to engage them about how they have been “politicing” religion for a long time, how their support of republican candidates and local “religious” characters for school boards (which are amazingly powerful in Texas) have all added to the problem.
Instead, I simply agreed, and they were then willing to complain about Delay, some other Texas pols and then, surprise, surprise, George Bush. It seems that they were starting to understand the wisdom of the church/state divide.
Hope springs eternal
David Duke
On Hardball, Delay just said that Barney Frank is one of the moral voices in Congress. He said he is a liberal, but Delay respects him because he is true to his beliefs.
Delay thinks a gay man is a moral voice in Congress???? How will that work with the Christian right?
The Hammer won’t be able to proselytize until he gets out of the Slammer. He’ll have plenty of time to work on his Jimmy Swaggart lip quiver.

Heh: those Redstate quotes are true gems. Lara Croft never found better.
The Associated Press says it doesn’t credit blogs, but it does.– In an odd story at HuffPost (tip to Instapundit), Larisa Alexandrovna says that two weeks of work on a story she wrote for an online news service was ripped off by the Associated Press. The story involved changes in security clearance standards that might affect gays, lesbians, and bi-sexuals. She complained to the AP:
We contacted an AP senior editor and ombudsmen both and both admitted to having had the article passed on to them, and both stated that they viewed us as a blog and because we were a blog, they did not need to credit us. . . . [W]we made a point of tape recording the AP apparatchiks admitting to taking our work and using it without attribution, stating “we do not credit blogs”.
But it gets stranger:

Tom DeLay’s quote that he was going to work to bring religion and government closer sent chill up my spine. I can only hope that rational christians will work to take back their hijacked religion from the clutches of the rabid right. What #11 said gives me some hope. My other hope is that the young children of the rabid right will rebel in mass in their teen years!!!
I spoke to God today too! She said that “the truth will set Tom free, but not from being convicted and serving time.” ;)

Re: seperation of church and state, what people often forget is that religious types originally supported the idea. Not out of the recognition that mixing the two is bad for the State, but out of the recognition that it is bad for Religion.
That’s the argument that needs to be revived when talking with the pious. You want to keep the two apart because the politics will destroy your religion.
Oh my– another great post! I was reading over at Common Dreams– there is so much good stuff there from Molly Ivins, John Nichols on Delay, Noam Chomsky, the SD abortion abomination, etc. that I will just say– lots of good reading.

Marx is dead, dimwits.
The rhetoric of the author of this site is a travesty. He (or whatever it is) should shut down this monument to Stalinist idiocy and stop embarassing himself.
It takes a self deluded, self appointed leftist intellectual to get really stupid.
Evidence… this crock of shit.
Don’t you morons know you’re just making asses out of yourselves?
Go home and shut up.
And how are all the other Repubs. gonna deal with DeLay working the fundie circuit for defense fund cash in an election year ? should be plenty of resentment, and not much of it hidden now that they’ve taken away his hammer.
no one should be happier about this precipitous fall from power than good ol Newt Gingrich – I wont be surprised if all kinds of nasty allegations make their way to the pages of the Washington Times . . . soon
This whole “Christian reality of persecution” complex is really getting ridiculous. How many Christians do we have in the U.S., about 250 million or so? Delay and his sanctimonious ilk need to get out their Bibles and read a little more closely. They have little in common with the man whose name they tack onto their political beliefs.
They are the Romans, the lions, and they don’t even know…
Hah. . . feeling the heat in the Hellmouth, it seems.
And oh, shouting Thomas: the Cubs suck.
“Ye have brought this man unto me, as one that perverteth the people; and behold, I, having examined him before you, have found no fault in this man touching those things whereof ye accuse him.” ~ John McCain

California levees break, threaten homes
Tuesday, April 4, 2006; Posted: 4:39 p.m. EDT (20:39 GMT)
SACRAMENTO, California (AP) — Two levees broke Tuesday in California’s chief agricultural region, flooding a trailer park and threatening other homes in Merced and inundating farmland near Sacramento.
There were no immediate reports of any injuries across the Central Valley.
Rain has saturated Northern California for the past month and more is expected over the next several days.
…
The rain also is melting snow in the mountains, swelling streams in the Central Valley.
“Not that there is any limit to the amount of corruption they will tolerate on the part of those who are willing to legislate hate, but still.”
It’s hard to underestimate how much right-wing Christians will tolerate from their leaders. They are absolutely convoinced of the righteousness of their agenda, single-mindedly intent on enacting it, and unconcerned or even blind to the methods used to achieve their vision of America.
I hope, however, that moderate evengelical Christians will pause. Um, are there any moderate evangelicals left? I used to see them in church, when I was little, like, in the 70s.
Shouting Thomas needs to crawl back in the the Yahoo boards from whence he came.
The problem with cults is the fealty goes to the leaders instead of the ideals. Considering the GOP has successfully hijacked Christian fundamentalism and used it to take and hold power, is it any surprise that they now expect the faithful to continue support of the cult leaders? It’s going to be interesting to watch these charlatans demand the followers contradict every one of their principles for the sake of the current power elite. And why not? They already got virtually every republican in this country to sacrifice traditional conservative positions such as fiscal responsibility, smaller government, support of troops and states’ rights. I’m sure people like DeLay figure all who go along with them are nothing but suckers to be fleeced over and over again.
Fire — great posts today, thanks.
He’s a’skeered of the gay people infestation.
From his blog:
When people ask me to describe my home town, Chicago, I often reply:
“Well, it’s a very sophisticated city… and it’s still hetero.â€
Apparently, even that is changing. Now, before you get all excited, remember that I have many gay friends.
I just like to think of Chicago as a holdout from the wacky sex change mania of New York City, Los Angeles and San Francisco… a place where I can go have a beer and play blues with the boys without one of them reaching for my crotch… a place where the boys and girls go out at night to chase the opposite sex.
Read it and weep. The Chicago Sun-Times reports that the city’s “… first openly gay alderman wants to remove male and female impersonators from the zoning shackles that bind ‘adult entertainment cabarets’ to sanction a form of entertainment he called ‘almost mainstream.’†(The picture is a Chicago “female impersonator†with a show name of “Mini Marks.â€)
From a legal standpoint, I’m probably in agreement with the “first openly gay alderman,†but doesn’t this story bring a tear to your eye?
My new song, “Last Straight Man in New York City,†takes on a deeper meaning in light of this development. The city of the strong shoulders going swishy. What’s next… Omaha? Peoria?
I’ll point out I’ve done some fun slutty scoring in Omaha. Too late, dude!
Watching Chris Matthews getting on his knee-pads to service Tom DeLay with softball questions. The money quote: Democrats are bent on ruining DeLay for his religious beliefs!
This must be the quid pro quo for getting the “heads up” on the news from DeLay.
What a disgrace to the profession of journalism!
now kids, you dont want to hear my “Hi, I’m Clare and I’m a Recovering Troll Responder” speech, do ya ?
Oh, and Boystown in Chicago is a blur to me.
;->
It’s hard to underestimate how much right-wing Christians will tolerate from their leaders. They are absolutely convoinced of the righteousness of their agenda, single-mindedly intent on enacting it, and unconcerned or even blind to the methods used to achieve their vision of America.
They’ve also been so mindfucked into believing that liberal = evil that they will support a crook like Delay, so long as he claims to be conservative.
I…feel…myself…about…to…speak…in…tongues….
It was bad enough when you leftist heathens promoted abortion, free love, and the destruction of public Nativity scenes, but now that you’ve declared war on tuna noodle casseroles, the Prince of Peace is gonna fry your asses.
Re: Shouting Thomas
>Marx is dead, dimwits.
And it’s a darn good thing too. He’d be over 200 by now. Can you imagine what his medical costs would be like?
Not covered by Medicare D, that’s for sure.
The only thing I want to hear from DeLay from now on is contrition. Matthews blows monkey chunks.
Shouting Thomas must have missed the Gay Pride parade then. Know what else Chicago is? Liberal. Unlike the Republican collar counties, Chicago has much more in common with NYC than Omaha or Peoria.
What happen to comments 15 to 33?
cbl: Sorry, I’ll behave. But there was this barrel full of fish, see, and my gun was loaded.
I wonder if Shouting Thomas knows Screaming Rachel, late of early 90s New York club scene. She’s hetero.
“And oh, shouting Thomas: the Cubs suck.”
Holy cow Pach, now you’re just being mean.
(heh-heh)
Sorry, we can laugh at them, if not respond, can’t we?
Gee, what did the White Sox do last year?
“And oh, shouting Thomas: the Cubs suck.â€
Holy cow Pach, now you’re just being mean.

Yeah, don’t make us break out our fearsome 11-game winning fireballers! We’re at least as good as Cincinnati…
I’d like to see a bumper sticker with something on it to the effect of Politicing our God is Blasphemy. Someone clever, please help….
OK everybody, “safe hug” for Shouting Thomas! He must be feeling lost and lonely today, what with the Exterminator getting all inclusive with the Honerable Barney Frank. If only I could believe it was a real change of heart… I think the Exterminator is flailing, since another commenter was correct that DeLay mashed on a lot of people on the way up. DeLay might be feeling a tad vulnerable now. Especially if he is too close the ugly rub out in Florida and the money boys have to throw him over (as they would shove over ANYONE in the name of bidness).
remember, these are people for whom Jonah is TBogg – ’nuff said
although you’re making laugh so hard, I’ve completely missed my nap window
and a mighty big fine gun it is darlin’
Why, are you a professional asswipe?
Damn I need to stop feeding him, but he makes it so easy. . .
Oh well; he got booted.
It was fun while it lasted.
The thread is officially un-hijacked. Return to your posts.
I have comments 15-33, but then again I see things differently.
Cujo – I’m really trying to help with this stealing thing, but it’s hard to quantify. As Christian Soldiears, we are reaquired to Steal Ourselves For War (against evil which, apparently in the original Aramaic is synonymous with Hilary). Now, how much we steal depends on what kind of war we have to steal for (for which we have to steal to correct the preposition, if not the proposition).
It all makes sense when Reverend Rick (or Ranger Rick if the Rev. is unavailable) says it.
Jane: neurophius (last thread) — can’t…breathe…laughing….
Pachacutec: “Heh: those Redstate quotes are true gems. Lara Croft never found better.
Does a “blindly-following-Tom DeLay-to-the-bitter-end” quote count in the racist quote contest?
Calling people at this site a bunch of Marxist gays is somewhat retro, IMHO -very out-of-it and old fashioned. Even Mr. Preznit GW Bush has much smoother ways of saying that, and I would hope his minions are studying up for the coming battle of 06.
Emmanuell, for all his faults, did really well on Matthews. Talking about Abramoff in the same sentence as DeLay as Republican philosophy resonates with me. Whether or not everybody is guilty of everything (which I believe is probably true) it all becomes dirty by association, and Dems look good by running against it all.
“…could cause their legions to just stay home and wait for the rapture with the 700 Club, a tuna noodle casserole and a Barcalounger.”
Workin’ on next year’s Koufax, Jane?
I’ll cop to the gay part, but teaching at Wharton does not exactly peg me as a Marxist.

I like it. What about God + Politics = Blasphemy.
The only problem I have with such a simple statement is that religion has played quite a positive force in politics in the Civil Rights Movement.
What a time to be away!
I feel for Redd with Fi. When my daughter was first in day care she spent one week in school and one week home recovering from something. It was insane trying to work.
Last week I spent much of it in the ER with said daughter who is now 19. She had another infection that was serious. Luckily she is now home and on the mend, which is good, because we have another family crisis related to another child. It’s hard when both need to be priority number one.
Which brings me to my point.
I read Delay’s statement in the previous thread and it struck me that while he thanked everyone for their support, including his wife, I didn’t see any mention of his daughter.
And given that it’s been said that she herself, may have been threatened with the law, I wonder if Delay failing to mention her is simple oversight or a telling omission, especially when his resignation seems to have come out of the blue.
Did the darling daughter roll?
A Christian martyr? Please. Tell us, Tom: Where would Jesus golf?
If you google kitchen gadgets, slicer and dicer,Jane’s picture comes up.
only kidding…….
Mary @ 3:01 pm (#56) we are reaquired to Steal Ourselves For War (against evil which, apparently in the original Aramaic is synonymous with Hilary)
Of course, the Aramaic translation can be tricky. In the not-too distant past, it was “Dean” and “Kerry”. In the near future, it may well be “Feingold”. The truth often changes as new concepts emerge. Or something like that.
C&L has a Jack Cafferty vid dissing Tom DeLay. Called him a ‘cocky little banty rooster’ and ‘good riddance.’ Going to have to send some love to ol Jack for that one!
Excellent point, Bionic. Hmmmmmmm.
Shouting Thomas -
This IS our home.
Get out.
Behold, a plague of locusts upon the republican’s landscape.
Word’s uptown…….
Joel…you’re right. I didn’t grow up in the Presbyterian church of the 60s without hearing a lot of sermons on why we shouldn’t buy grapes, why we should support civil rights, etc.
just dropping in, not feeling well, but had to share in the celebration.
I was on Freeperland last night to share thier joy, and they were speculating that he was leaving for all sorts of reasons, among them to join Falwell, to run for VPOTUS or POTUS. They thought POTUS would be excellent. By a ratio of about 8:1, they agreed that all of his legal troubles and those of anyone he touches are Democrat/liberal lunatic creations, overlooking the involvement of the DOJ in a Republican administration. It will be truly ugly as the veil is lifted from thier eyes and the indictments flow.
Fantastic posts today, sorry the Rubber Stamp thing didn’t work out, but would it get lost in all the HotTub Hoopla? I am so looking forward to the outcome.
See you tomorrow, prob. Hallelujah, indeed.
immanentize #11,
“Instead, I simply agreed, and they were then willing to complain about Delay, some other Texas pols and then, surprise, surprise, George Bush. It seems that they were starting to understand the wisdom of the church/state divide.”
We could take a lesson from you on how to gently reinforce recovering republicans as they find their way out of the darkness, without turning them off.
New thread
Mary – good pun in your post (#56) – that’s supposed to really be “steel ourselves for war”, isn’t it? Will the noise of battle come from a heavy mettle band of warriors?
And then there’s Rolling Stone Magazine…hardcopy arrived in the mail a couple of days ago, haven’t gotten to it yet, but Matt Taibbi covers this pit of vipers in “Meet Mr. Republican: Jack Abramoff“.
That must hurt. DeLay doesn’t even get that coveted title, “Mr. Republican”.
76- mettle. *g*
Cujo -you learn Redstate Christianity fast, grasshopper!
I am already hearing that there is a whole Dead Sea Scroll devoted to nothing but Feingold – apparently if you add his last three addresses, divide by his license plate number, add in the first three digits of his social security number and then scratch all that out and write “666″ you get the sign of the best, uh, I mean beAst.
‘Verily, touch the hem of my garment, and leave the cash-laden briefcase on the table’
Mary @ 4:09 pm (#79) – The reason no one’s discovered that until now is that you have to do the arithmetic in base 8. Until The Discovery Institute came along, all scholars had opposable thumbs, so no one had ever tried this before.

In response to DeLay and his supporters, The Religious Institute on Sexual Morality, Justice and Healing believes that communities of faith must be “truth-seeking, courageous, and just.”

or the Religious Institute’s homepage at http://www.religiousinstitute.org
Delay will end up as a K-Street lobbyist or a highly-paid consultant to a Republican K-Street lobbying firm. Hey, he built them, he owns them. And he’ll just conduct the same influence peddling on the Hill from K-Street as he did out of his office in Congress…but will make a whole lot more money.
I’m certain he’ll out-Abramoff Jack Abramoff, but will have his legal eagles running interference for him to keep everything “legal.” And he won’t have those “pesky House rules” to contend with anymore.
How much you wanna bet Delay will register as a lobbyist within weeks of his official departure from Congress? Any takers?
I agree that they should go home and await the rapture. Speaking of the rapture, did you know that when you are raptured up, you actually are physically removed from the face of the earth and go up into the clouds for a skybox seat at Armageddon? It’s true! Only problem we have found is that when you rapture out – even though you -physically- dissappear, your clothes are left behind.
To show your respect for God and modesty, we are now offering a clothing line of heavenly rainments that will be awaiting you when you arrive in the clouds. You don’t want your fellow raptureres to see you nekid do you? In the most popular colors, pearly white, heavenly pink and sky blue. RatureWear ™ today.
