Hot Tub Tom takes one for the team? That’s what he’s claiming, but it’s a bit out of character. Wouldn’t have anything to do with this would it:
On Friday, his former chief of staff pleaded guilty to conspiracy and promised to help with a federal investigation of bribery and lobbying fraud relating to Abramoff. Tony Rudy admitted conspiring with Abramoff _ both while Rudy worked for the Texas congressman and after he left the lawmaker’s staff to become a lobbyist himself.
Rudy is the second former DeLay staffer to plead guilty to federal charges in connection with the lobbying probe. Michael Scanlon, a former DeLay press secretary who later became a lobbying partner with Abramoff, pleaded guilty last fall to conspiring to bribe public officials.
Keeping with tonight’s theme, there is always comedy from the Free Republic:
Seriously. He’s been much more open about speaking of his relationship with God, and he might have decided he’s going to spend the rest of his life working for foster care, and for his Christian values.
It is extraordinarily hard for a mark to accept he’s just been sold a case of snake oil.
(Freeper quote thanks to BarbinMD, graphic by Monk at Inflatable Dartboard)
Update: WaPo says that "under Texas law DeLay must either die, be convicted of a felony, or move out of his district to be removed from the November ballot." I suppose that’s why he announced he is moving to Virginia. But as a commenter over at TalkLeft noted, wouldn’t a judge have something to say about DeLay moving to Virginia if he’s under indictment in Texas? (thanks aReader)

Bugman begone!
Maybe, just maybe some of the doom and gloomers in da blogosphere will take this event to heart and realise that we can:
Fuck the Rethugs shit up.
That ReThugs are self-destructive assholes.
That we can indeed: Drive the Republican Party into the sea!
Fight Back!
Does this mean that his Oilieness will be hoppin on his lobbyhorse to ride into the post-Potomac sunset?
.
Commenter at TalkLeft points out…
Will the Texas legal system allow DeLay move to Virginia while he’s under indictment in Texas?
salon.com war room on DeLay:
…It isn’t clear, though, whether DeLay yet understands how radioactive he is. More than any other Republican, he has come to symbolize the routine abuse of power that now epitomizes how Washington works; George W. Bush is disastrously incompetent, but Tom DeLay may be something even worse — he was disastrously competent, a man so adept at fusing money, religion, power, and meanness that, at his height, you had to wonder whether anything could ever bring him down.
Now the fall has come. ..
In the interviews, DeLay appeared to believe that his resignation marks the end of his time in the sun, that now we’ll all forget about how ugly his reign in the House was. But if he thinks that we won’t have Tom DeLay to kick around anymore, he’s probably wrong. It’s not just that the investigations and the recriminations will continue, though they surely will; despite his claims of innocence, much more troubling news is sure to come spilling out. The bigger problem is the long term.
“I don’t care what history writes,” DeLay told Time. That’s good for him. History won’t treat Tom DeLay kindly.
My best guess has DeLay working from the inside for Chuck Colson’s ministry. Say, for 5 to 10 years.
Boy, I sure do hope the new site is finally up and running. Just got home from work in time to join a new bonus thread.
Thanks Jane and Christy for all the work getting this going. And congratulations on your Koufax! Almost made it for three, which would have been both phenomenal and well deserved.
The bugman goeth soon, uh, I hope.
Athenae has some more freeper quotes.
You can bet he’ll be facing new charges soon.
sing it, Pete:
Well I’ve got a Hammer
And I’ve got a bell
And I’ve got a song to sing
All over this land
It’s justice for the Hammer
It’s the bell of freedom
It’s the song about love between my brothers and my sisters
All over this land
People partying WAY too fast IMHO. He’s still free, still scheming and still funded. If this makes me a curmudgeon, make the most of it.
I don’t want to wade into the infested waters of Free Republic to gauge further reaction, but that quote above is just breathtaking in it’s willful naitivity.
Un-fucking-believable.
And these guys win elections
Oh, how he fighty are maulen.
*ye fighty, dammit.
Time for bed.
Was I EVER gone today! DeLay quits! What a wuss. I just found out – not here ’cause I hadn’t gone back through the comments.
WOW!!!!!!!!!
Perhaps we should come up with a nickname for Hugh Hewitt like we did with Noron.
My vote – Hewtwitt.
ET – we were going to break it to you gently….
if it makes you feel any better, Josh Marshall had a similar experience.
OMG.. I just read Trevino’s “Queen Bee” self-parody. The guy’s idea of an argument is to cite himself making unsupported assertions. Do that 20 times and you win.
But the funniest thing is seeing how few commenters are over at his post, and at redstate in general.
How IS traffic at the mighty WhiteSheet these days anyway?
Yay Monk! creepy and kewl.
T Rex: or,
Oh, how the fighty are done mawling
Reading other blogs, it appears the status of DeLay is very much up in the air. Some progressives see a finesse move gonig on here, but I’m not at all sure these guys know any better how to handle this than anything else they’ve done lately.
I guess I should apologize for asking questions which might have already been asked here earlier tonight.
There is no way this is a finesse move. It is a finis move. Delay was not smiling today, you may have noticed.
Congrats on the Koufax, you beauties!
Any bets on Delay having cut a deal?
See you both in Vegas!
Hasta La Vista, baby
marky and punaise,
didn’t see him on TV, but the picture of him at Huffpost is positively bug-eyed.
What time did he announce this today?
Is it premature to break into a chorus of:
So long sad times
Go long bad times
We are rid of you at last
Howdy gay times
Cloudy gray times
You are now a thing of the past
Happy days are here again
The skies above are blue again
So let’s sing a song of cheer again
Happy days are here again
Altogether shout it now
There’s no one
Who can doubt it now
So let’s tell the world about it now
Happy days are here again
Your cares and troubles are gone
There’ll be no more from now on
From now on…
Happy days are here again
The skies above are blue again
So, let’s sing a song of cheer again
Happy times
Happy nights
Happy days
Are here again!

What’s the residency requirement in Virgina for a person to run for Federal office?
ET: It kinda leaked out, CNN had it at about 7:40 PDT, I think. There’s confusing versions of the story; apparently Bugman’s got a presser scheduled tomorrow. The Galveston paper sez he’ll resign the seat in May or June since he “has a few things he wants to finish up.” WaPo says he’s not running, and can only get off the ballot by dying, moving out of the district, or being convicted of a felony, since the primary happened last month.
So I guess we’ll know more tomorrow, but this sure is a happy day. I think the prosecutors are dealing wives’ liberty and freedom, but that’s just WAG.
gosh, this is almost as good as fitzmas!
Hmm.. i almost feel like getting up early so I can watch those two republican hosts on CNN’s morning show cry:)
He’s been much more open about speaking of his relationship with God, and he might have decided he’s going to spend the rest of his life working for foster care, and for his Christian values.
That’s why they call it a come to Jesus moment!
I smell a rat, uh – a bug.
Thanks, Teddy. I was driving from Anchorage to Wasilla (50 miles) up to about 10 minutes before it came out, flipping back and forth to radio news sources, listening to Right Wing Jackals slime Cynthia McKinney. Who, as much as I love her, sometimes makes herself an easy target.
Swing State Project seems to be on top of the emerging legal issues regarding the upcoming Texas election and DeLay’s status.
Its interesting how he can’t quite let go, though it doesn’t surprise me.
I guess Tom Delay understands the “end times” better than we ever imagined. I like to wait until official announcements before celebrating, however.
The discussion of this in freeperland is Hilarious. They are disgusted that Hottub called Chris Matthews and not Brit to break the news, they think he’s a hero for “sacrificing himself”, they think Ronnie Earle will lose interest now that he’s not important enough and the best one…
They think he’s going to run for president.
After he clears up a few things, of course.
hahahahahahahahahahahaha
I thought heavy use of Psychotropic Substances was verboten by Amish law…?
Clearly Ronnie Earle and his ilk win. The politics of smear and the politization of the judicial process win.

You know what?
We as snarky progressive bloggers are currently living in what my father (a retired military tactician) would call a “target rich environment”. I mean, there’s only so many blogging hours in the day. Jean Schmidt didn’t finish her degree? Katherine Harris piloting her increasingly hysterical and cross-clutching campaign on to the rocks, Tom DeLay, Scott McClellan going on Wingnut Welfare, Murray Waas on pre-war intelligence, Howard Kaloogian, Hugh Hewitt and the VERY REAL DANGERS of shopping at Banana Republic in Manhattan, Ben Domenech, Blitzer, Red State, AAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!
They’re doing it on purpose. They’re taking the buckshot (literally) approach. Right when things reach a fever pitch around Thursday, Judy Miller and Deborah Howell will get into a drunken, screaming, very bloody public cat-fight over Scooter Libby. And my head will explode.
And then cc mask will be right, and Chimpy will resign before tax day.
But God doesn’t like me that much.
It just couldn’t happen like that.
shoephone, Fox has announced it, that’s the most official Repug voice you’ll hear besides Tom’s.
I just realized what time it is, I can’t believe it’s so late. goodnight, friends.
Flight risk!
The dimwits in the GOP spent 30 years learning how to fight dirty and win elections. But they forgot that once they took power, they would have to govern effectively. Whoops….

Pass the AMMO!
zennurse – thanks for update. I just got back from dinner with my sister at the Metropolitan Grill, got online and went “wha???”
BTW, to Jane and Christy – your Koufax is so well deserved! Hope you’re as proud of yourselves tonight as we are of you. As an aside – the first baseball game I ever went to was a 1965 World Series game at Dodgers Stadium. I had just turned six years old, and got to see Koufax pitch up close. All I really remember is developing a huge crush on him, and accidentally spilling coke-a-cola all over my aunt’s white coat. She forgave me. And I still love Sandy K.

Somebody could make a fortune by getting a slot on cable TV and just streaming quotes from Free Republic. It’s a non-stop barrel of laughs over there, you could run the Comedy Channel out of business. I just paid a visit to the site, curious to see how they were reacting to the news that Saint Thomas Delay has bailed out of his congressional race. But I got sidetracked by one of the comment threads in which they express their solemn belief that those who are concerned about global warming are actually pushing a nefarious agenda to redistribute wealth on the planet.
Christ on a crutch, those Freepi are delusional.
Best Katherine Harris pic in days!

Bye bye Mr. Bug !!!
Just maybe Thomas was correct…
“A little patience, and we shall see the reign of witches pass over, their spells dissolve, and the people, recovering their true sight, restore their government to its true principles. It is true that in the meantime we are suffering deeply in spirit, and incurring the horrors of a war and long oppressions of enormous public debt…” – Thomas Jefferson
On a lighter note, Tom DeLay’s rise and fall brings to mind a line from the old “Honeymooners” TV show, starring Jackie Gleason and Art Carney:
“Be nice to the people on the way up, because you’re going to meet the same people on the way down.”
Tom must have missed that episode.
Interesting that the bug-man announced this on a Monday. Normally something so disastrous would be Friday PM material… makes me wonder what else is gonna happen this week.
OT, but I love the new comments format. Halostank can bite my shiny metal ass (and the real one too).
Jason Leopold at truthout has an article saying Fitzgerald is preparing the paperwork for Rove’s indictment, that Fitzgerald shifted the primary focus of the probe into perjury charges against Rove and Libby after only a month on the job (i.e., Feb. 2004), and that the big inside source for the prosecution was John Hannah in Cheney’s office.
Target rich? Sure, BURN EM. Then go after the ones that don’t burn and stake em. Make em pay big time. Keep pushin. Impeach the lot. Take back our country.

pretty good comment thread over there pondering whether DeLay is evil or just corrupt.
I go with evil and corrupt.
punaise –
I missed out on the Kevin Drum discussion, because I like to avoid his site (he annoys me too much), but isn’t this a distinction without much of a difference?
Corruption is evil. And IMO, evil is the corruption of the soul.
What DeLay controlled was not just money. It would be a huge task to sit down and try to calculate the number of people the Bugman harmed, through 1) his actions, 2) his inactions, 3) his lies, 4) the morally degenerative influence he had on those around him, who may once have wanted to actually engage in public service, 5) etc.
What Tom DeLay did in controlling legislation had a direct impact on the lives of living, breathing human beings — unless of course, some of those folks STOPPED breathing because of him — health care legislation comes to mind.
Of course, there are different degrees of evil and corruption, but once a person has become accustomed to a life of selfishness, vanity, the hunger for power over the lives of others, the hunger for money, taking joy in the manipulation of others, considering human beings primarily as objects rather than subjects worthy of respect by virtue of their humanity, etc. etc. etc. — the harder it becomes to shake free from evil.
OTOH, I missed the original discussion, so perhaps there was some input along these lines, and I know you were making a joke, which I laughed at at first, so I’m not really trying to be nitpicky (especially not with your post), but there is way too much “defining evil down” going on in recent days (heck, in recent DECADES). The scope of evil is breathtaking, indeed.
I often think about the failure to do good as one of the more serious aspects to evil — imagining what chain of influence could have come about if an individual had been committed to justice and fairness and the good of all, rather than to injustice, selfishness, greed, and the fostering of conflict and hatred.
Oh well. Sorry to carry on like this, but it’s a danger late at night — lapsing into such thoughts comes easy when the house is so quiet.

Add a Rove indictment sometime soon, and we have a picture of a conservative movement in smoldering ruins.
Abramoff, Delay, Rove. . . give me Norquist and some barbeque sauce and I’ll die happy.
Well, not. We still have to fix the country. But I won’t live to see all the harm done in the last five years get sorted out. I’lljust turn 40 later this month.

The idea of Rove indicted is a fervently prayed-for dream of mine, as it should be for every American who knows what Rove is really like. He needs badly to be discredited, kicked out of town (preferably put behind bars), and the ground salted out of which he sprang.
Then, of course, Georgie comes apart. What on earth would the Boy King do without his very own Goebbels?
Iraq’s interior ministry refusing to deploy US-trained police
· Plans for non-sectarian force under threat
· Rice insists that power of militias must be curbed
Jonathan Steele in Baghdad
Tuesday April 4, 2006
The Guardian
Iraq’s interior ministry is refusing to deploy thousands of police recruits who have been trained by the US and the UK and is hiring its own men and putting them on the streets, according to western security advisers.
The move is frustrating US and British efforts to build up a non-sectarian Iraqi police force which would not be infiltrated by partisan militias.\

As a Texas resident, I’d just like to say “buh-bye”.
Bill Maher on 3/31/06:
And finally, New Rule: People who run everything can’t complain that they’re underdogs. To whit, this week, there was a highly-attended conference in Washington called “The War on Christians.” Because nothing quite says “I’m oppressed,” like the opulent Regency Ballroom of the Omni Shoreham Hotel.
Ah, yes, whatever happened to that plucky little cult, Christianity? Oh, that’s right, they’re 80% of the American people, and have taken over all three branches of government, country music, public schools, the bestseller list, and until recently, Katie Holmes. You know, Christians, I don’t mind that you’re part of a dress-up cult that hates sex and worships magic but the paranoia, that does scare me.
Did you know that the Missouri legislature recently felt the need to propose a resolution declaring Christianity Missouri’s majority religion. No kidding. Really, you mean people ar
en’t saying, “Gosh, I’d like to go to Missouri, but…to Jewish.” In Savannah, recently, a children’s book about a baby penguin who is raised by two male penguins – ahh! – was removed from the library for its homosexual overtones. Because you know penguins, in those tuxedos, with the dreamy eyes. Huge fags!
The Christian right are now officially the party of paranoia. Secularists are attacking Christmas! Gays are attacking marriage! Liberals are attacking values! White girls are being abducted at an alarming rate! You know, if you’re going to be that paranoid all the time, just get high.
And the worst part is, the people bitching loudest about being persecuted for their Christianity aren’t Christians at all. They’re demagogues and conmen and scolds. And the only thing they worship is power. If you believe Jesus ever had a good word for war or torture or tax cuts for the rich, or raping the earth, or refusing water to dying migrants, then you might as well believe bunnies lay painted eggs.
And Jesus – and Jesus never said a word about gay marriage. He was much too busy hanging out with 12 guys. Now – now I know George Bush says Jesus Christ changed his heart. But believe me, Dick Cheney changed it back. The only thing Bush has in common with Jesus is they both went into their father’s business and got crucified for it.
Thomas Jefferson called the type of Christian who trumpets his own belief in the divinity of Jesus rather than the morality of Jesus “pseudo-Christians.” And that’s who’s running our country today. And since they thrive so much on turning water into “whining”—and get off on their endless pretend persecution, this Easter season, let’s give them what they want. Let’s go to the zoo, get some lions, and feed them Tom DeLay.
It’s 6:00 am and the Houston CBS news lead story: “Oh, how the mighty have fallen.” After showing that ridiculous video DeLay made, the local political journalist is now at IHOP (!), interviewing Sugarland residents.
Back in the studio, the political analyst reminds that the Supreme Court is expected to rule on DeLay’s illegal Texas redistricting in June or July. Hmmmm….
All in all, ten minutes of declicious coverage–great way to start the day in Texas.
I don’t mind what Congress does, as long as they don’t do it in the streets and frighten the horses.
Victor Hugo (1802 – 1885)
From the NYT:
In an interview Monday night, Richard Cullen, Mr. DeLay’s principal criminal defense lawyer, said that his client had been pondering a withdrawal from the race for some time and that “it had nothing to do with any criminal investigation.”
“The decision had absolutely nothing to do with the investigation,” Mr. Cullen said. “It was a very personal decision and a political one.”
Yuk-yuk-yuk.
Next: Mr. Cullen announces his client will paint himself blue, rename himself Donna, and have himself rocketed into space. As a personal decision, ya see. Not having anything to do with a perticular, ah, investigation. Nossir.
Ah…nothing like Spring. A good Astros game last night topped off by a scumbag de-throning. Now if we can ace Scotty, indict Rove and Hadley, and get Katherine Harris to hold out until May, things will be looking good.
Kudos on the Koufax, ladies – brilliant work. And who’da thunk I could ever wake up to Delay’s mug without being put off my feed?
So, how does extradition between Virginia and Texas work?
Also why not move to another district IN Texas? The law just says moving out of the district, not out of state. If this move was so he could spend more time on his defense, wouldn’t Texas make more sense? Maybe federal charges are coming? Surely, some hay can be made of him turning his back on Texas in favor of the D.C. lobbyists.
Re: Virginia move by the bug. His real battle is in Federal court. This is some other pretty big news that will be lost today. This is the guy that gave Ohio to Bush in 04′.:
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) – The state’s top elections official said Monday he accidentally invested in a company that makes voting machines.

So Jon Steward said last night that John McCain would be his guest tonight. Do you think the subject of the Bugman retiring “to spend more time with his lawyers” discusssion might happen?
Or will Jon fawn all over McCain like he has in the past?
So much opportunity, so little time.
OH HELL YEA!
This amounts to a huge admission of guilt for Delay. Kaboom to the GOP.
I just got my stamp, ha ha. Ha ha. Sent you a pic of it Jane……..I’m going out stompin and stampin at lunchtime!
PS. Could Hastart and Blunt follow suit…….
Off Topic Plea for Help
I am having problems accessing FDL from work by our IT guys (it is a large university and they have never seen such a problem and swear it must be on the host server’s end) and have been told to contact Jane and Redd, but I can not find how to do so. Is there somewhere I can send an email? I can’t find any email links or “help” section on the new site.
Thanks!!!
Citizen Jane
Gyro Gearloose,
“The state’s top election official said Monday he accidentally invested in a company that makes voting machines.”
Holy batshit Robin, ain’t that illegal er sumpthin’??!! You are right Gyro, this could be the story that seals the deal for the Democrats…I don’t think that voting machines without paper trails are gunna be an issue by November. I am worried, however, about the primaries and Rahm E. and Schumer…these two are certainly not above usin’ the fascists machines ta insure Republicrat candidates.
Thanx for the heads up…great news!!
KEEP THE FAITH AND WATCH OUT FOR EXPLODIN’ WINGNUTS!!!
Oh, Edward Teller, that pic of Harris is superb! Also, could Delay be quitting to spend more time with his attorney’s?
The article I went to this morning starts with “Succumbing to scandal…” but my bleary morning eyes saw the truth: SCUMBAG” hahhaha
How sweet it is! We’ve fumigated the bugman. Delay gone not a day too soon.
What great news to wake up to! Of course he’s trying to paint himself up as some kind of martyr to the liberal media, but he’s gone, gone, gone!
poor Katherine Harris is having such turmoil about her disappearing campaign staff that she resorted to changing all the locks in her campaign office …
Good early morning reading……the reviews are superb!
The Hammer: Tom DeLay: God, Money, and the Rise of the Republican Congress (Hardcover)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/produ…..1?n=283155
Rick Scarborough Quote:
“I believe the most damaging thing that Tom DeLay has done in his life is take his faith seriously into public office, which made him a target for all those who despise the cause of Christ,” Scarborough said, introducing DeLay on Tuesday. When DeLay finished, the host reminded the politician: “God always does his best work right after a crucifixion.”

mmwwwaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhh
People I’m talking to (neocons all) think DeLay will be running for President in ‘08, maybe 2012. And they are sure he did nothing wrong! It was all a vast Democratic conspiracy. I just laugh in their faces. They won’t believe it until they see the guilty verdicts and the orange jumpsuit.
How they can be so clueless, I can’t imagine.
JEEzus, this is jest beginnin’ ta sink in…the House of Representatives is now Democratic. The primaries are gunna be crucial in those districts where Rahm is tryin’ ta pack dino-friendly, Republicrat candidates. And now we gotta really focus on gettin the Senate…this is the whole enchalada, the entire shootin’ match. But the chaos from 06-08 is gunna be a mother! Economically, politically, on the war front…this ride is gunna get real bumpy but let’s enjoy it right now.
KEEP THE FAITH, PUT THE CHILREN INSIDE AND LET ‘EM SHOOT EACH OTHER!!
They won’t believe it even then.
Soon to be a major movie. The life of Tom DeLay, called “The Ex-Terminator.”
What do all of his corporate donors think of his suddenly using their payola for his legal bills instead of buying the House?
DeLay’s claim to be a victim of Democratic politics notwithstanding:
1. He was three times chastized by a Republican House of Representatives.
2. He is being prosecuted by a District Attorney who has indicted 3 times as many Dems as Pubs.
3. He was pushed out of his House leadership position by his Republican colleagues.
4. He is being investigated by the Justice Department of a Republican administration.
5. He was probably ratted out on by his former underlings.
Of course, the wingnuts don’t see any of this. The irony is, it would be great if the Dems are as powerful as DeLay makes them out to be.
Any chance this sort of move might be contagious? Perhaps Bush and Cheney will see it as the trendy thing to do and quit too. Yeah, I know, a wild, almost sexual, fantasy.
Oh and by the way, that picture? Eeiwww. subject
UH…
The WaPo might want to recheck their facts a little.
In Texas, you don’t have to BE a resident of a Congressional district to be elected in it, as per our Secretary of State! So if you want to move from a district you don’t have to live in, what does it matter?
The process for withdrawal isn’t all that complicated, either. It’s covered under our Election Code. Section 145 (warning: PDF file). Nothing there about reasons being required for filing, just how to file. Now if someone knows the statute that says you can withdraw ONLY under the WaPo’s criteria, I welcome them to point me in that direction. But it’s not in the place I always thought it would be, which is under our election code.
Anyway, I think they’re confusing the law for our own state legislators, who DO have to live in their districts, with the law for US Congressional reps.
But I could be wrong…
Not sure the comments thread is working, but here goes. Also, this is OT but not OT since on this blog Plamegate is always OT.
The new Libby defense is that Libby was a victim of infighting among the WH, State, and CIA plus “media conflagration,” that Libby was not responsible for the leak.
Excuse me? Libby is not being charged with leaking, he is being charged with perjury and obstruction. In other words, if he had the truth to tell which would exonerate himself, why did he not tell it? Why did he perjure himself?
This seems another example of what I call the Spaghetti Defense..keep throwing half-cooked spaghetti on a wall..if its sticks, it’s done. If not, keep trying.

Oh, poor Tom DeLay. Pushed out by all those nasty, mean, and, did I say nasty? Democrats. Nothing he did, oh, no siree. Fucking idjit!

Do’t you think Bush would be distancing himself from this in an election year for the Republicans? Here’s the Scotty Quote – “Congressman DeLay has been a good ally whom the president has worked very closely with.”. Wow, why don’t you cozy up to him a little more!
